Costa Rica Tours & Vacations

Travellers walking with tour guide in the jungle near Fortuna Waterfall in Costa Rica

Biodiverse, brilliantly colorful and naturally breathtaking, Costa Rica embraces a slower pace of life.

An adventure hotspot for some, a cultural haven for others and a tropical paradise for most, Costa Rica definitely lives up to its translation as the ‘rich coast.’ And as you journey under lush jungle canopies and through laidback surf towns, you’ll soon be rich with  memorable experiences.  Lean into the slower pace of life as you become a pro at spotting toucans in Monteverde’s  steamy cloud forests  or listening out for the distant whoop of white-faced capuchins in Manuel Antonio. The phrase ‘hustle and bustle’ isn’t in Costa Rica’s vocabulary, as you’d expect from a country whose unofficial motto is ‘ pura vida ’ – the pure life.

Culture and customs.

Costa Rican culture can be summed up in two words: 'pura vida', or the pure life. It's a greeting, farewell and a way to show appreciation. Like any good life motto, pura vida is better experienced than explained. It means being friendly and polite, taking it easy and being thankful for what you have. Costa Ricans' carefree way of life, coupled with living in one of Central America's most progressive and prosperous nations, makes the locals some of the happiest in the world.

You'll find that people in Costa Rica are generally in less of a hurry than most North Americans or Europeans. Following what is affectionately known as 'Tico time', people will often be fashionably late, except for things with schedules – Tico time does not apply at work, the movies or the train station.

Costa Ricans (or Ticos and Ticas) are known for their conflict-averse nature. Peace is so highly valued here that their army was abolished in 1949, with all funds reallocated to create an 'army' of teachers instead.

History and government

Ancient history.

Like most Central American countries, indigenous communities thrived for thousands of years as hunter-gatherers, and it's believed that humans have lived in Costa Rica's jungles and rainforests for as many as 10,000 years. However, with no urbanized civilization like the Aztecs or Mayas, and little to no cultural preservation during the time of Spanish colonization, not much is known about Costa Rica's true indigenous populations.

Colonization, independence, and trade

At the time of Spanish colonization, it was estimated that 400,000 people lived in what is now known as Costa Rica. Christopher Columbus arrived in the region in 1502 on his fourth voyage, leading to the settlement of the first Spanish colony in Costa Rica.

As settlements grew, indigenous populations dwindled due to disease and forced labor. After around a century, the population had fallen to 20,000, and a century later, down to 8000.

In 1821, the Americas broke free of Spanish control following the Mexican War of Independence. Costa Rica became part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823 before gaining complete independence in 1838

Costa Rica eventually found its feet in the global coffee trade, and by the end of the century, coffee crops accounted for nearly 90% of Costa Rica's exports and 80% of its foreign income. Not only was coffee production an indicator of wealth in Costa Rica, it was also a powerful political tool prompting the emergence of other industries, including the banana trade, which surpassed coffee exports in the early 20th century.

Costa Rica's economy relies on eco-tourism, and the country has championed the idea that the 'rich coast' refers not to resources dug from the ground but to the natural wonders above ground. The easygoing attitude of Ticos comes from a love of their country and pride that their democracy has endured in a conflict-ridden region.

Eating and drinking

Costa Rican cuisine is wholesome and fresh, with influence from  Spanish ,  South American , and  Caribbean  culinary traditions. On the Caribbean coast, you'll find dishes with Afro-Caribbean flair, usually featuring more meats, spices and coconut milk.

Capital city, San Jose, not only has an up-and-coming food scene but has established itself as the craft beer hub of Costa Rica. Enjoy seasonal samplings on a San Jose Bites and Sites tour with Urban Adventures

Look out for these favorite dishes and drinks across Costa Rica:

What to eat in Costa Rica

  • Gallo pinto Gallo pinto, the most common side dish in Costa Rica and across the Americas is served alongside meals morning, noon and night. It’s made of rice, beans, onions, peppers and spices, and the name translates to ‘speckled rooster’ because of the pops of color in the rice.
  • Casado If you eat at a ‘soda’ or a traditional Costa Rican restaurant, when traveling, chances are a casado will be on the menu. Although there are multiple variations of this tasting plate, you’ll likely get served up some gallo pinto, fried plantains and salad with either chicken, beef or fish, and freshly squeezed juice, covering all your food groups in one.
  • Chifrijo Chifrijo is a common bar snack in Costa Rica. The word is a combination of its two main ingredients – chicharrones (fried pork rinds) and frijoles (beans). The chicharrones and beans are layered together and topped with guacamole and pico de gallo and served with fresh tortilla or plantain chips for dipping.
  • Ceviche While ceviche is probably more often associated with Peru, the Tico version is a delicious variation. Made with raw fish cured in citrus juice, onions, coriander and peppers and served with tortilla chips or fried plantains, this dish is light, refreshing and a great start to a meal.
  • Patacones Patacones are deep-fried green plantains that are ideal for a snack or as a dipping device for chifrijo, guacamole or pico de gallo.
  • Sopa negra Sopa negra is a Costa Rican black bean soup, often flavoured with tomatoes and spices and served with egg and coriander.
  • Rondon Rondon is a seafood chowder that comes from Jamaica. Other Caribbean countries who’ve adopted the recipe have put their own spin on it with their choice of seafood – fish, crab, small lobster – as well as the coconut milk broth and spices.
  • Arroz con leche Sweet tooths can rejoice with this Central and South American dessert staple of arroz con leche – a spiced, sweet rice pudding made with cinnamon, cloves and raisins. Try it as a warming snack or a special dessert.
  • Pejibayes This unusual fruit comes from a type of palm known as the peach palm – the same tree that heart of palm comes from. After boiling for a few hours and discarding the inner seed and outer skin, the fruit is finished with a squeeze of lime or a dollop of mayonnaise to eat the local way. The taste has been likened to a mix between a squash, potato and cashew.

What to drink in Costa Rica

  • Coffee Costa Rica produces some of the best coffee in the world, so you’re set for your caffeine fix during your time in Costa Rica. It has both the ideal soil composition and the perfect elevation to grow the perfect coffee crop, so be sure to sample as many fresh local brews as you can.
  • Alcohol If you’re looking for drinks of the alcoholic variety, try guaro – a liquor made from sugar cane, best enjoyed in a guaro sour (with lime, simple syrup and soda). The craft beer scene is growing quickly here as well, so look for microbrews from a multitude of small local breweries. And if you’re wondering how to say cheers, just say ‘pura vida’ again!
  • Naturales Naturales – sometimes also called refrescos or batidos – are delicious fresh fruit juices blended with either milk or water. You can find them all over the country at small kiosks or booths in a variety of flavors like mango, pineapple and guanabana.

Geography and environment

Costa Rica is known for its incredible beaches and magical rainforests. But the backbone of this coastal nation is truly stunning mountain ranges, many of which contain both active and dormant volcanoes. You’ll also find heaps of waterfalls, lakes and rivers throughout the country. For this reason, adventure sports such as zip-lining, whitewater rafting and cycling are popular in inland destinations such as La Fortuna and Montverde, and adventure-packed activities are a popular way to experience the country.

Get active on an  8 day Costa Rica: Hike, Bike & Raft trip

Costa Rica’s diverse topography is home to many microclimates, and the temperature and weather can vary dramatically depending on elevation and how close you are to the coast. Rainforests, cloud forests, jungles and mountains exist side by side. The varied land and climate foster over 5% of the world’s total biodiversity.

Witness ecological diversity firsthand on a  10 day Best of Costa Rica trip   Costa Rica is home to over 500,000 species of plants and animals. Those seeking to  spot local wildlife  will be enthralled by Costa Rica’s unique flora and fauna. And the spectacular variety of wildlife isn’t limited to the land – scuba diving is another popular activity, with Costa Rica boasting some of the most beautiful bays, beaches and reefs in the world.

Four of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica

  • Tortuguero National Park One of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets, this national park is the unspoiled paradise you’ve been searching for. Take a dip in Tortuguero’s warm turquoise waters or just relax on the idyllic shores
  • Manuel Antonio A true eco-playground, you can spend a day exploring misty rainforests and searching for sloths and monkeys before cooling off on one of the delightful beaches. Head into Quepos town for some good food and fiery nightlife after the sun sets.
  • Jaco Once a sleepy beach town, Jaco’s proximity to San Jose has made it a one-stop shop for those seeking big waves and even bigger parties. The gateway to national parks and  active adventures , there’s no denying Jaco’s uber-cool surf-town vibe.
  • Corcovado Well off the tourist trail, Corcovado isn’t your average beach experience. Boasting a diversity of colors, landscapes and wildlife, Corcovado is perfect for those seeking beaches with character and charm. Oh, and it’s got the largest primary forest in the American Pacific, if you needed another reason to visit.

Whether you’re buying souvenirs or groceries, your best bet in Costa Rica is to shop at local markets. Head to the Mercado Calle Nacional de Artesania y Pintura (National Craft Market) in San Jose for the best selection of handmade goods and souvenirs. Here you can stroll through dozens of stalls selling handmade hammocks and painted oxcarts as well as t-shirts and shot glasses that say ‘pura vida’. San Jose's Mercado Central is also a great place to grocery shop and pick up souvenirs, and vendors offer everything from fresh produce to coffee to leather goods.

You’ll often see carved wooden masks for sale but, while all of them are beautiful, for a truly authentic mask, you should aim to buy directly from indigenous communities who make them.

As in any destination, check that any souvenirs made from natural materials have been ethically sourced. Avoid buying products made from rainforest woods that were not sustainably harvested,  sea turtle  shells and other animal products. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, for example, have strict quarantine laws regarding some materials, such as food and wooden objects.

Festivals and events

Costa Ricans definitely know how to throw a party, and place a lot of importance on food, family and community. Many Costa Rican festivals celebrate the country’s farming and ranch heritage, and a lot have a Catholic element. No matter which festival you’re celebrating, you’re pretty much guaranteed a deep dive into Tico culture. Here are a few of the biggest festivals in Costa Rica:

Las Fiestas de Zapote

This festival, celebrated from Christmas until New Year’s Eve every year in the town of Zapote, is a week-long fiesta. It’s home to the biggest rodeo in Costa Rica, many carnival games, as well as rides and food stalls.

Palmares Fiestas

After the festivities of Christmas, New Year’s and the Zapote festival have wound down, it’s time for the Palmares festival. In mid-January, more than one million Ticos and tourists head to the town of Palmares for one of the largest festivals in Costa Rica. Revelers drink beer, enjoy food, listen to international acts and watch traditional bullfighting and the ‘tope’ – a horse parade through the streets.

Fiesta de los Diablitos

The ‘Festival of the Little Devils’ is celebrated twice each year (in December and February) in the indigenous communities of Boruca and Rey Curre. The festival celebrates the triumph of the original inhabitants over the Spanish conquistadors, with dancing and performances featuring costumes and painted masks.

Limon Carnival

If you’re traveling to Costa Rica in October, you’ll probably find yourself in the festive spirit as you touch down, as this is the month of Carnival. Notably, it’s when the Caribbean town of Puerto Limon celebrates this annual festival, with elaborate costumes, floats, parades and food stalls aplenty, spread across two weekends.

Costa Rica travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

Year-round tropical warmth means there really isn’t a bad time to visit Costa Rica. December to April are normally the driest months; however, Costa Rica’s diverse topography and blanket of rainforests suggest that you should be prepared for at least some rain any time of the year – a very small price to pay for such lush surroundings.

The good news is that even during the rainiest of seasons, the rainfall tends to be limited to a couple of hours a day – just enough time for you to enjoy a cup of Costa Rica's acclaimed coffee in one of its many cafes.

The most popular time to visit Costa Rica is between December and March – the driest and hottest months along the Pacific Coast. May to October brings the most rainfall across the country, but this is dependent on the region, as the wetter seasons are extended on the Osa Peninsula and northern sections of the Caribbean Coast.

Do you need a visa to travel to Costa Rica?

Generally, Costa Rica grants visas to most countries’ passport holders for a period of 90 days, providing travelers have a valid passport, a return or onward ticket and their trip is for leisure. Some countries’ citizens must apply for a visa before leaving their home country, but most do not.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information. This is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Costa Rica?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Costa Rica, rounding up the bill and leaving spare change at restaurants and cafes is standard practice. Many restaurants do add a service charge to the final bill which is usually a 10% gratuity; however, 500 colones (or around USD 1) of local currency is an appropriate extra amount.

What is the internet access like in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's cities and tourist centers have wi-fi and internet access available in hotel lobbies and internet cafes. Internet access is less available in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Costa Rica?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Costa Rica's cities and metropolitan areas, although expect limited coverage in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Costa Rica, but, be sure to check with your service provider first to find out about any fees you may incur, as sometimes this can be expensive.

Costa Rica has one state-owned phone provider – Kolbi – as well as a selection of private companies, should you wish to purchase a SIM while abroad. Depending on what connection and coverage you need during your stay in Costa Rica, a prepaid option with one of these providers may be the cheapest way to go.

What are the toilets like in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's toilets are a mixture of flushable and squat toilets, so be prepared to encounter both. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as these aren't always provided.

What will it cost for a...?

Costa Rica's unit of currency is the colón (CRC). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Cup of coffee = 500 CRC
  • Naturales (fresh fruit drink) = 1600 CRC
  • Bottle of beer = 1100 CRC
  • Lunch at a soda (local restaurant) = 3200 CRC
  • Dinner in a restaurant = 5000-9000 CRC

Can I drink the water in Costa Rica?

Although tap water is considered safe to drink in Costa Rica's cities, it's probably a good idea to avoid drinking tap water in Costa Rica. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying small bottles of water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found as some hotels provide this, so you’re able to use a reusable bottle. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Costa Rica?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels, and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash, so be sure to have a combination of both when traveling.

What is ATM access like in Costa Rica?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When traveling out of the city, come prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always an option.

What public holidays are celebrated in Costa Rica ?

Is Costa Rica safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Generally speaking, Costa Rica is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Same-sex relationships are legal and, in 2015 Costa Rica became the first country in Central America to recognize gay relationships; however, recognition of same-sex marriage is currently pending government approval. In many places in Costa Rica, public displays of affection might attract unwanted attention, but there are a few places in Costa Rica with a thriving LBGTQI scene. Quepos has long been known as the LGBTQIA+ capital of Costa Rica, and the actual capital, San Jose, has a good number of gay bars and clubs.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex  or   ILGA   before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

What is the weather like in Costa Rica?

Being in the deep center of Central America, Costa Rica gets hot and oh so humid. However, there’s a whole number of microclimates inside its borders – that’s a fancy way of saying that the terrain is pretty hilly – so depending where you are in the country, the temperature may fluctuate. Generally speaking, Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate year-round with temperatures averaging at 64°F minimum and 81°F maximum.

Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast has tropical heat almost all year round. March is the driest and hottest month, and May to October brings the wet season to the region. The Western Central Valley, including cities like San Jose, indirectly follow the Pacific Coast’s weather trends.

The Caribbean Coast has pretty steady rainfall all year round with no distinct dry season. September to October and February to March are considered the best months to travel to this side of the country as they are drier than most, but still experience rainfall. The Eastern Central Valley usually follows a similar weather pattern.

Is Costa Rica accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Much of Costa Rica’s travel highlights are based around the coast and in nature, so depending on travelers’ level of mobility, this may present obstacles. Many national parks are difficult to visit for travelers using a wheelchair, as jungle paths are mostly remote and not stable. Manuel Antonio does have wider paths and more accessible routes to venture into the rainforest, and the wide boardwalks and beaches are wheelchair friendly. The capital, San Jose, is a bit tricky to get around, with rough sidewalks and a lack of ramps. There are, however, taxi companies in the capital that offer wheelchair-accessible vans.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to pack for a trip to Costa Rica

Packing for a trip to Costa Rica doesn't have to be difficult as long as you take into account the weather conditions you're likely to experience while you're over there. This means packing lightweight, comfortable clothing, walking shoes for exploring, appropriate sun protection items like sunscreen and hats, and a backpack so you can carry your camera and a reusable drink bottle.

What language is spoken in Costa Rica?

Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica, however, there are five indigenous languages that are still spoken throughout the country, as well as a mixture of English, Portuguese, German, and French spoken by a percentage of the population.

My fiancé, 15 year old son, and I were unsure what to expect for our first group tour, but we found it to be an amazing experience! Our CEO, Daniel Fernandez, was exceptional! Every evening he posted a note that included where to be and when, what to expect, what to wear and what to bring. He was friendly, thoughtful, organized, helpful, and most importantly - passionate about Costa Rica! While we kept super busy, it was relaxing because everything was taken care of - minimal thinking for us! LOVED the experience and would recommend!

This tour covered alot of ground and really showed you the country. As a result, some of the bus trips were quite long and over very challenging roads. However, our guide Tayron made them pass much more easily. He was a fountain of local knowledge and shared about his own experiennces and family history. This added so much more personality to my trip. The hotels were clean and welcoming especially Cala Lodge in Monteverde. The only exception was Hotel Punta Leona. This property is very tired and was far too large to move around easily. The shuttles were inconsistent making moving luggage from your room a chore. The beaches made up for this weakness though. Playa Blance was paradise. Food at every location was plentiful and tasty. There were no bad meals and plenty of excursions included. For the price this was one exceptional trip. If you go, be patient and prepare to have lots of adventures.

Picturesque Solo Costa Rica Tour

It was a good solo travel trip. BUT plan ahead. INDUS drops you off at hotel and then you are on your own in SAN Jose. We did get a map museums were closed on MOnday. research things to do, It can be extremely helpful to start researching your destination before you travel. Find out information about the city you are traveling to along with the area you will be staying in, so you can discover which stores and restaurants will be close by, get to know your way around the neighborhood, and familiarize yourself with attractions you want to see. Your journey will go smoother if you come prepared with ideas — and it will be a fascinating experience to see them come to life! The shuttle drivers were usually on time. Sunday was a busy travel day from Manuel Antonio hotel Tabula tree back to SAN JOSE PARK INN so beware of that. bus driver was late due to traffic almost an hour.

Costa Rica tour saver was really good! Make sure you get the transfer from airport San Jose, as I didn't get it and had to pay a stupid taxi fare to get to hotel. Otherwise hotels were all good, itinerary was good and varied, lots of animals to see. I did the beach extension and relaxed. Food was all great too. I'd recommend.

I believe that the guide makes the experience, and our guide, German Rojas, was SUPERB!!!! From his leadership, knowledge, crowd-handling abilities to his grace and humor, he is an all-around 5-star guide! Don't lose him! I loved the itinerary, especially the wildlife watching opportunities. I personally would like maybe a little less time at Arenal volcano, with more time at either Tortuguero or Manuel Antonio, but I would definitely recommend this itinerary to friends and family!

One hotel, my room flooded during the night and I could raise no-one on site and internal doors were locked to prevent access. I felt this was particularly dangerous. It was hours before someone helped and got me another room.

Under The Mango Tree In Costa Rica

Tags: mango bread or cake costa rica , mango costa rica , mango tree costa rica

mango tours costa rica

Mangoes  grow almost wild in Costa Rica   from April through  June.  The warm tropical climate and ample rainfall provide the perfect environment. And Costa Ricans love mangoes.  They make a delicious drink of fresh mango mixed in the blender with water and sugar (shown here in Xinia’s photo)  Also freezing fresh peeled and chopped mango and then blending it with water and sugar- Even Better!

Mangoes are used in bread and cake making (Mango Bread)  Just peel and chop it and place in the bread or cake mixture before baking. Mangoes are popular in salads and served over ice cream.  Click here to view a large collection of delicious recipes using mangoes.  http://www.freshmangoes.com/mangorecipes/recipes.html

Also the fruit and leaves are used for floral decorations for weddings as well as religious ceremonies.

Mango trees grow very tall-up to 4 meters and can live for three hundred years.

The small fruit is called mango and is very sweet and the larger fruit is called manga and is less sweet and the pulp is much firmer (tastes like a peach)  In the US we pay $1 or more for one large manga and here in Costa Rica they sell for around twenty five cents each.

Xinia has a large mango tree in her back yard and the fruit is falling all during the day and night, so if we sit under the Manga Tree–well we may get an unexpected bump on the head.  Also be careful not to eat the peel, you will get a “sting on your lips and gums”

The large manga shown below which Xinia is holding is unusually large.  Average size is much smaller.

Best Costa Rica Jungle & Mangrove Tours

Home » Things to do » Best Costa Rica Jungle & Mangrove Tours

The jungles, swamps, and mangroves of Costa Rica are awe-inspiring – no matter how many times you’ve seen them. Constant sunlight, abundant rains, and the high temperatures are a recipe for biological diversity. These complex biological ecosystems contain dense foliage, massive trees, and more than half of all the living things known to man. A trip down the mangrove canals will reveal a surprising number of wading birds (they can gather in flocks up to the thousands), curious iguanas and monkeys keeping watch from tree limbs, and the occasional tapir pushing through the undergrowth.

Costa Rica Jungle Day Tours:

Despite the thick undergrowth of a jungle, hiking tours are a great way to get up close and personal with nature. Naturalist guides are strongly recommended in order to spot the elusive wildlife and learn about the complicated relationships between the flora and fauna of the Costa Rica jungle. A jungle kayak or cruising adventure is another way to discover the untouched beauty of Costa Rica. Kayaking is a fantastic way to reach some of the most remote and wild mangrove environments. Without a motor, travelers might get to spot some of the more elusive tropical creatures.

Corcovado National Park Tour, Osa Peninsula

Best Jungle and Mangrove Tours in Costa Rica

Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park is the largest lowland rainforest in Central America and the most remote rainforest in Costa Rica. The park covers nearly half of the entire Osa Peninsula and is home to exotic species such as scarlet macaws, all 4 Costa Rican monkey species, and the endangered jaguar. Nearly every jungle lodge in and around Drake Bay and Puerto Jimenez can book a guided day tour to Corcovado. Hike along the shoreline or right into the jungle to explore the most remote tropical forest in the country.

Tarcoles River Cruise, Central Pacific Coast

Top Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

One of our most popular adventures brings you to the Tarcoles River within Carara National Park on the Central Pacific Coast , home to some of the largest populations of crocodiles in the world! Male crocodiles can weight up to a ton and reach 20 feet in length! While cruising along the Tarcoles River, you will see them swimming or sunbathing on the river banks. Available as an en route tour from Arenal Volcano to Manuel Antonio, this tour is a great opportunity to get (not too) close to these immense creatures while continuing on your exploration of Costa Rica. Another option is to simply stop off at the famous Crocodile Bridge over the Tarcoles River to see the wild crocodiles for a quick stop off!

Damas Island Estuary Kayak or Boat Tour, Manuel Antonio

Top Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

Damas Island Estuary is located outside  Manuel Antonio National Park  and the town of Quepos. From crocodiles and sloths to monkeys and iguanas, these mangrove waterways are teeming with wildlife like crocodiles, herons, sloths, monkeys, and more! A professional naturalist guide will lead you through the estuary by boat or kayak. Following your tour, enjoy a traditionally prepared Costa Rican meal. Tours are available during the day and in the evenings.

Tamarindo Estuary Kayaking Tour, Guanacaste

Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

Between Playa Tamarindo and Playa Grande, the Playa Grande Estuary empties into the bay of Tamarindo. A professional naturalist will guide you through the unique estuary ecosystem, pointing out the highlights and wildlife in the area. This tour can be done in single or double kayaks. An hour into your adventure, grab a snack on the riverbank.

Costa Rica Jungle Overnights:

One of the best ways to explore all of the beauty of Costa Rica is a few nights stay at one of the country’s jungle lodges. Several of the eco-lodges in our collection are accessible only via boat or flight. This makes reaching your destination an adventure in itself. See the country from an aerial angle on a domestic flight and/or take a boat to your destination looking for wildlife!

Osa Peninsula

5 Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours

Peruse the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve on the remote Osa Peninsula by boat or kayak through dense jungle estuaries.

Many jungle lodges are located on or near the remote Osa Peninsula – the southwesternmost point of Costa Rica which also happens to contain one of the largest remaining tracts of tropical rainforest in Central America. This important region is home to literally hundreds of species, many endangered and is the perfect place for explorations into untouched jungles and rainforest. The Diquis Delta near Drake Bay, the Sierpe River Mouth  of the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve, and the G0lfo Dulce  are mangrove highlights of the region. Boat transportation down-estuary waterways to the lodges of Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula introduce guests to the huge variety of ecosystems that can be found, and it’s an extra chance for wildlife watching. Bird-lovers, in particular, should check out the Osa Peninsula. It’s one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica for bird-watching and is one of the richest and most diverse tropical zones in the world.

Queen Egret

Known as the Amazon of Costa Rica,  Tortuguero National Park is a jungle highlight. While primarily known for the sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs between March and mid-October, Tortuguero’s intricate maze of mangrove waterways creates a completely unique cacophony of jungle undergrowth! A professional naturalist guide will point out the exotic flora and fauna of the area from the comfort of a boat with a quiet motor. Howler monkeys, anteaters, sloths, jaguars, and over 350 bird species call this region of Costa Rica home. These maze-like waterways are the perfect paths for kayak and boat adventures.

Special Places of Costa Rica

Rental agreement & booking rules.

This Vacation Rental Agreement (“Agreement”) is for the rental of the vacation rental property specified in a confirmed reservation (the “Property”).

This Agreement is between:

(1) Special Places of Costa Rica (“SPCR”), acting on behalf of itself and the owner of the Property (“Owner”), and

(2) The Renter (“You”), the responsible party for the rental of the Property.

By booking the Property rental through SPCR, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by all the terms, conditions, and policies presented in this Agreement, including any additional terms that may apply to specific properties or booking channels (collectively, the “Terms”).

Unit-Specific Terms: Certain jurisdictions, resorts, and specific homes may require additional terms and conditions (“Unit-Specific Terms”). You will be notified of any applicable Unit-Specific Terms during the reservation process for the Property. In case of any inconsistencies between the Unit-Specific Terms and the general Terms in this Agreement, the provisions of the Unit-Specific Terms will take precedence.

Channel Terms: If you are making a booking through a third-party marketing channel, your reservation may be subject to that channel’s terms and conditions (“Channel Terms”). In the event of any conflict between the Channel Terms and the general Terms in this Agreement, the provisions of the Channel Terms will prevail.

Copy of ID Document.

Special Places of Costa Rica (SPCR) requires the primary renter of each property to provide a scan, photograph, or photocopy of a government-issued identification document. Foreign nationals must provide a scan or photograph of the photo ID page of their passport. Costa Rican nationals must provide a scan or photograph of their cédula (National ID Card). Foreigners with legal residency must provide a scan or photograph of their DIMEX ID card. The provided identification documents are solely for the purpose of verifying the identity of the primary renter and ensuring the security of the rental process.

Minimum Age:

The “Minimum Age” to rent the Property is as specified in any Unit-Specific Terms. If no age is specified in the Unit-Specific Terms, the Minimum Age is either 21 years or the minimum age required by local law in the jurisdiction where the Property is located, whichever is higher. You agree to provide us with proof of your age upon our request. The responsibility of ensuring compliance with the Minimum Age requirement lies with the renting party. For guests who are below the Minimum Age, a parent or legal guardian must accompany and supervise them for the entire duration of the rental.

Responsible Renter:

As the Renter, you agree to be present at the Property for the entire rental period. All other occupants must be either family members, friends, responsible adults over the Minimum Age, or individuals accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. You further agree to assume full responsibility for your actions and those of all family members, guests, and invitees (collectively referred to as ‘Occupants’) present at the Property throughout your stay. Moreover, you are responsible for ensuring that the Property is used in a responsible and respectful manner, adhering to any local regulations, homeowners’ association rules, and the Terms outlined in this Agreement.

Good Neighbor Policy

As the Property is privately owned, all Occupants must adhere to our Good Neighbor Policy. Please treat the Property as carefully as you would your own home and leave it in the same condition you found it. To safeguard against theft or damage, kindly ensure doors and windows are securely closed and locked when you’re not at the Property and during check-out.

It’s essential to conduct yourselves respectfully and considerately throughout your stay, avoiding behavior that may disrupt neighbors, traffic, or the community. This includes refraining from activities that might prompt complaints to SPCR from law enforcement, neighbors, or homeowner associations.

Between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., please refrain from generating noise that’s audible outside the Property. And, of course, do adhere to all applicable parking regulations and limitations.

Non-compliance with this Good Neighbor Policy may result in penalties, fines, or even eviction, so it’s important for everyone to cooperate in maintaining a harmonious environment.

Maximum Occupancy.

The number of people present at the Property may not exceed the maximum posted occupancy unless we have given you advance written permission to hold an event at the Property, in which case the number of people present at the Property may not exceed the maximum number of people authorized by SPCR.

Prohibited Behaviors.

Smoking, vaping, prostitution, and drugs are never allowed inside any property represented by SPCR. Smoking and vaping are allowed outside the home if not otherwise prohibited by Costa Rican law or the regulations of a multi-unit property. Guests who smoke are asked to close windows and doors to prevent smoke from drifting inside and to be considerate of neighbors who may find secondary smoke invasive. If we receive a complaint from a neighbor, guests must refrain from smoking on the property.

No Permanent Residence.

By renting the Property, you acknowledge and agree that your use is for temporary and transient purposes only. It is not permitted to use the Property as a permanent residence. Your permanent residence is required to be and will remain at a location other than the Property. This clause ensures that the Property is utilized as intended for vacation purposes and adheres to legal regulations.

Animals or pets are generally not allowed at the Property, with the following exceptions:

Animals authorized in your reservation. Bona fide service animals required by law.

Emotional support animals are not permitted, except as authorized pets. It’s important to note that the absence of animals does not guarantee the absence of animal or pet allergens in the Property. If you’re traveling with pets, there might be an extra cleaning fee and a higher security deposit to consider.

Approval for bringing pets is decided by SPCR’s discretion. To seek approval, guests need to provide details like the breed, weight, and a photo of the pet. This policy is designed to ensure the comfort and safety of all guests while maintaining the quality of the rental experience.

Events and Commercial Photography; Structures; Charcoal Grills

Events and commercial photography or filming are prohibited at the Property without our express written permission. (If approved, additional conditions and fees may apply.) No tents or other structures may be erected on the property without our express written permission. The use of charcoal grills is not permitted unless provided by the property.

Criminal Activity Prohibited.

Using the Property for any criminal activity is strictly prohibited. This includes actions that are against the law. If found engaging in criminal activities, you may face fines, legal prosecution, and immediate eviction from the Property. This policy also extends to the use of the Property’s internet service, if available. This means using the internet for illegal activities like downloading copyrighted material without permission, such as movies, music, software, or other content.

We are committed to cooperating fully with any investigation related to alleged criminal activity that occurred at the Property during your stay. We remind you to always adhere to local laws and regulations to ensure a safe and lawful environment for everyone.

Payment Terms; Fraud.

If you are paying by credit card you represent that you are the account holder or an authorized user of the account. If, for any reason, SPCR believes your payment may be refused by the card processor, SPCR may ask you for a different form of payment. Upon SPCR’s request, you will immediately provide another form of payment and adequate proof that you are the account holder or an authorized user of the account used for payment (such as a government-issued ID that matches the name on the account).

In accordance with our payment policy, 50% of the reservation needs to be paid upon reservation. The remainder 30 days prior to arrival. If the guest fails to pay on time, we have the right to cancel. If the reservation is made within 30 days of arrival, 100% payment is required.

SPCR may cancel your reservation or remove you and all Occupants from the Property immediately if you fail to provide a form of payment that can be validated by SPCR. We may share your credit card information and other information about you with law enforcement if we suspect fraud.

Consequences of Breach; Charges for Damage.

Any failure by you or any other Occupants to comply with any of the terms, conditions, or policies above is a breach of this Agreement and may result in a forfeiture of your rights to rent the Property, up to and including immediate removal from the Property without refund and with or without the assistance of law enforcement.

SPCR may terminate this Agreement for breach, and if you are notified of such termination you agree to leave the Property immediately. In addition, you are responsible for, and you authorize us to bill your credit card on file for the full amount of (1) any damage or loss that occurs at the Property during your stay; (2) a charge of up to $1,000 for violations of the pet policy, including for bringing more pets or different types of pets than specifically authorized; (3) an additional cleaning fee of up to $500 (or the actual cost of cleaning services, if greater) for violations of any of the guest policies above (other than the pet policy) or excessive cleaning required by the acts or omissions of any Occupant during your stay; and (4) any fines issued by police, other government officials or agencies, utility providers, and/or homeowner associations for violation of any law, ordinance, or rule during your stay, and any damages (which may exceed the number of fines) that result from the violation.

If any unauthorized download of illegal material via the Property’s Internet service occurs during the period of your stay, you agree that we may share your contact information with the Internet service provider or any other party we believe, for any reason, has enforcement rights.

Rental Rates.

At SPCR, rental rates vary depending on the property and length of stay. Monthly rentals (30 days or more) come with significant discounts. However, guests are responsible for their electricity consumption during the stay.

Cleaning and Cleaning Fees.

For stays of 7 days or more, once-a-week cleaning is included. A cleaning fee is charged upon reserving the property to cover cleaning after your stay. If desired, guests can request additional cleaning for a fee of $40 + 13% for 3.5 hours of cleaning. Email notifications will be sent to eligible guests regarding cleaning schedules. Please note that cleaning times are fixed, and declined cleanings won’t be rescheduled.

Insects and Wildlife.

Our properties are nestled in tropical environments, so it’s important to be mindful of insects and other animals. While we take precautions like periodic fumigation, encounters with nature are expected. Unfortunately, we cannot control wildlife. Therefore, we do not provide refunds for animal intrusions that are beyond our control. We kindly remind guests to be aware of the tropical surroundings and embrace the unique experience it offers.

Alarms, Locks and Safes.

All security functions at the house will be explained to guests. (1) Alarm must be set at all times when leaving the property, or the “stay” function must be used to arm the perimeter at night. (2) Safes must be used to store valuables. (3) When leaving the property or at night, guests must lock all doors and windows. Failure to comply can result in warnings, but if items go missing because security measures weren’t followed, no compensation will be provided.

Terraces, Pool, Beach and Patios.

Guests must acknowledge that the terrace, beach, pool, or patio areas carry inherent risks and potential dangers. It’s important to recognize that floors and stairs both inside and outside the property can become slippery when wet, posing a safety hazard. While enjoying these areas, guests should be aware that injuries may occur. By staying at the property, guests assume all risks related to both outdoor and indoor spaces.

We particularly advise parents traveling with young children to reach out to SPCR before finalizing their booking. This proactive approach ensures that potential safety concerns are addressed, promoting a secure environment for everyone. We encourage all guests to exercise vigilance and caution in these areas, ensuring an enjoyable and safe stay for themselves and their loved ones.

Locked Areas.

Locked areas for which the tenant is not provided a key are off limits. Property owners sometimes lock up their belongings in personal storage areas, and guests must leave these alone. Any forced entry into owner’s private locked space will result in eviction, forfeiture of the rental fee, a $500 fine and any additional damages for missing items.

What We Supply.

We provide two rolls of toilet paper per bathroom, hotel-style soap, shampoo and conditioner, laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent, trash bags, and other disposable items. If you run out of any of these items during your stay, please replenish them at a local grocery store.

Owner and SPCR Not Responsible.

Neither the owner of the property nor SPCR is liable for lost, stolen, or damaged items inside or outside the property. All SPCR properties contain a safe, and we recommend that guests place valuables there. Neither the property owner nor SPCR is liable for any inconvenience or damage arising from temporary stoppages of water, gas, electricity, or plumbing, nor for weather conditions, natural disasters, or acts of God.

The tenant is fully responsible for any damaged or destroyed property caused by the tenant or the tenant’s guests or invitees, occurring during the term of this rental or any renewal thereof. If we identify any damage or missing items, we will contact the tenant before any charge is incurred. The tenant agrees to cover the replacement costs for any missing or damaged items, plus a 20% service fee and any travel expenses. ADDITIONAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Cancellation Policy; No-Shows.

Cancellation policies vary per property and reservation platform. Tenants should review the cancellation policy closely on the platform where they’re booking. No full or partial refunds will be granted for no-shows. SPCR advises guests to obtain appropriate and comprehensive travel insurance that covers the Renter and all Occupants and that includes coverage for personal injury, illness or disease, and property damage or loss.

Refund Policies.

Refunds are determined by cancellation policies, and in addition, SPCR charges a 5% cancellation fee over the total booking amount or a minimum of $75 + 13%, plus any applicable merchant fees. This will be withheld from any refund on a deposit. Refunds will be processed to the credit card on file, or via wire transfer if deposit was made by wire transfer. SPCR recommends travel insurance to cover any unforeseeable contingencies.

Reservation Changes.

Reservation changes occur when a reservation for property already took place, payment has been made and dates are confirmed. (1) Changes in reservation dates are governed by the cancellation policy and the full or partial refund periods in effect. (2) Location changes (i.e., choosing a different property) are also governed by the cancellation policy and the full or partial refund periods in effect. (3) Changes in the number of guests are allowed so long as they don’t exceed the maximum number of guests allowed on the property. Reservation changes may be subject to an administrative fee of up to $100 + 13% per occurrence.

Travel Insurance.

SPCR advises guests to obtain appropriate and comprehensive travel insurance that covers the Renter and all Occupants and that includes coverage for personal injury, illness or disease, and property damage or loss, and to help protect against financial loss if you must cancel your reservation for a covered reason.

Our official check-in time is 3 p.m. If the property has been inspected and cleaned, early check-in can be arranged, possibly incurring additional fees. However, if a previous guest’s late check-out causes a delay in property readiness, we will ensure your check-in happens as soon as the property is prepared. It’s important to note that no compensation will be provided for such delays. For a seamless check-in experience, we recommend that you verify the specific check-in procedures prior to your arrival.

If the guest arrives early and the property is still being cleaned, SPCR will allow the guest limited access to place belongings in the property and/or put groceries in the refrigerator. At all times, the guest must contact SPCR in advance to make arrangements.

Personalized check-ins after 6 p.m. will be subject to a $20 fee. Check-ins after 9 p.m. will be subject to a $40 fee. These fees must be paid directly to the check-in agent in cash. The latest check-in time offered by SPCR is 11 p.m., although if a guest needs to arrive later, arrangements can be made and additional fees may apply.

Guests are required to check out by 10 a.m. to allow SPCR ample time to prepare the property for the next guest arriving at 3 p.m. Late check-outs may result in charges of $50 + 13% per hour beyond the designated check-out time, unless a prior agreement with SPCR has been established.

It is the responsibility of guests to:

Dispose of garbage by placing it in the designated bins before check-out. Turn off lights, air conditioning, and televisions. Lock doors when leaving the property. Ensure barbecue grills are left in the same condition as found; failure to do so might result in a $50 + 13% cleaning fee.

If guests need to check out during a period when SPCR’s office is closed, they must return all keys and alarm fobs by placing them in a dropbox located outside the SPCR office. To ensure a seamless check-out experience and to accommodate any special requirements, we recommend that guests coordinate any special check-out arrangements with SPCR in advance.

Maintenance or Housekeeping Issues; Property Conditions.

The Property is provided as is, and we are not responsible for the interoperability or unavailability of any amenities. You agree to contact SPCR, using the contact information provided in your confirmation email, as soon as you notice any maintenance or housekeeping problem, or any potentially hazardous condition, at the Property, or if any incident occurs at the Property that is related to such a problem or condition. You further agree to give SPCR a reasonable amount of time to respond to your report and to cooperate with SPCR’s efforts to address the concern or provide a remedy. We will take reasonable and appropriate steps to remedy any reported problem as soon as practicable. We may enter the Property at your invitation to remedy any problem you report, at reasonable times and with reasonable notice to inspect, maintain, or repair the Property, and to address any situation that we reasonably deem an emergency that threatens persons or property. No discounts or refunds are issued for any malfunctions or service requests for air conditioners, televisions, internet, hot tubs, pools, appliances, elevators, barbecue grills, etc. In addition, no refunds will be given due to area power blackouts, cable and internet interruptions, water shortages, or construction/remodeling at nearby properties. You acknowledge that if the Property has access to amenities that are shared with other properties, such as a shared pool, hot tub, parking lot, or fitness center, the availability and condition of those amenities is outside SPCR’s control. Please bring any issues to our attention and we will try to address them as soon as possible, but no refunds are offered for matters beyond our control.

Substitution of Property.

On rare occasions, due to ownership changes, properties being removed from rental use, or a need for extensive repairs or maintenance, the Property may not be available for rental on the dates of your reservation. In this unlikely event, SPCR reserves the right to substitute a comparable property. If comparable accommodations are not available, you will have the option of (1) selecting from other available properties (in which case you are responsible for, or will receive the benefit of, any difference in cost) or (2) receiving a complete refund of your reservation payment. In the event of a substitution of rental properties, all Terms in this Agreement, plus any Unit-Specific Terms specific to the substituted property, shall apply to your stay in the substituted property. For your comfort and convenience, SPCR will take proactive measures to promptly inform you in the event of a property substitution.

Acknowledgment & Disclaimer; Limitation of Liability.

FF.1. Acknowledgment & Disclaimer. You acknowledge the Property may have features, amenities, and conditions that are unfamiliar to you and other Occupants you invite to the Property. You further acknowledge that your use of the Property and its amenities may carry inherent risk, including the risk of bodily injury, illness or disease, disability, or death. For example, some Properties include natural habitats for wildlife, insects, and pests that may expose you to injury or disease; or docks, stairways, porches, ledges, cliffs, hot tubs, and other unmarked natural or manmade features, amenities, and conditions that carry an inherent risk. You agree that, by using the Property or its amenities, you voluntarily and willfully assume those risks and assume full responsibility for the choices you make before, during, and after your use of the Property and its amenities. You also acknowledge and agree that you and any other adult Occupants are solely responsible for closely supervising and protecting the health and safety of any Occupants that are minors, throughout the duration of your stay.

FF.2. Disclaimer of Warranties. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SPCR AND THE OWNER EACH EXPRESSLY DISCLAIM ANY WARRANTIES OF SAFETY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, QUIET ENJOYMENT, AND AS TO THE ADEQUACY OF THE DIRECTIONS AND WARNINGS PROVIDED TO YOU. FF.3. Limitation of Liability. THIS LIMITATION APPLIES TO ALL CLAIMS FOR DAMAGES WHETHER BASED ON A THEORY OF WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING ORDINARY NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY, OR OTHERWISE, EVEN IF SPCR HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE AND EVEN IF THE LIMITED REMEDY SET FORTH HEREIN IS FOUND TO HAVE FAILED OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE.

You agree to hold harmless and indemnify SPCR and Owner, and their respective affiliates, for and from all claims for property damage, personal injury, illness or disease, or monetary loss resulting from your actions or omissions, and the actions or omissions of other Occupants, during or relating to your stay.

5 Days / 4 Nights

Tour itinerary, day 1 : arrive in san jose.

Founded in 1737, San José was a forgotten backwater of the Spanish empire until the late 19th century, when it boomed with the coffee business. San José enjoys spring like temperatures year-round and its location in the Central Valley -- the lush Talamanca Mountains rise to the south, the Poás, Barva, and Irazú volcanoes to the north -- makes it both stunning and convenient as a base of exploration. Check into hotel upon arrival.

Day 2 : San Jose City Tour

Immerse yourself in Costa Rica's rich culture and history;visit the magnificent Opera House, the University of Costa Rica and the beautiful Sabana Park. Take an informative tour of the national Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. Transformed from an old military fort to display the country's peaceful tradition, this museum will give you a unique insight into the cultural heritage of Costa Rica. Next, visit the historic National Theater, completed in 1897 and recognized as a masterpiece of architecture.

Manuel Antonio National Park is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica. It features a beach of crystal-clear waters with coral reefs and is bordered by exuberant tropical vegetation and rainforests. Enjoy a drive along the Pacific coastline and travel past photogenic villages along the coast until you reach the park. Since the park is closed to vehicles, you can hike to the preserve. COVID 2020 Update. PNVR is responding to the changes and needs of the times to protect our guests. It is our mission to continue to offer safe, stress free, and relaxing vacations in Playa Negra.

During this unprecedented time we have been working hard with guests to refund or reschedule stays when needed. We stopped renting homes as of March 22nd, 2020 so there have been no new rentals since that time.

As we move forward and when Costa Rican borders open we will be working hard to keep homes clean and safe for guests. This includes thorough cleaning of frequently touched items. Examples of high-touch surfaces include tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, handrails, light switches, remotes, wardrobe and cabinet handles, desks, toilets, sinks, bedside tables, and kitchen and bathroom surfaces. All linens and towels will be washed in high temperature water. All homes will be supplied with ample cleaning products and paper towels for clients use. Homes are also cleaned and sprayed with disinfectant after each guest's departure.

We are also allowing 24 hours between when guests check out of a house until new guests check in.

PNVR will be updating and changing cleaning protocols when necessary. If clients have any special requests, we will do our best to accommodate them. Please feel free to ask us any questions.
