ABOUT THE iowa STICKS
Our goal is to assist young players in cultivating the essential individual and team skills required for competition at the high school level and beyond.
How we started
Established in 2007, the Iowa Sticks originated with the objective of providing athletes access to coaching expertise for a fee, along with the chance to engage in a tryout-based baseball club. Initially comprising just one 8U team, the Sticks organization has experienced substantial growth annually.
By 2009, teams were available for individuals aged 7-14. In the subsequent three years, the Sticks broadened their scope with the introduction of the High School Sticks Program. Over time, this program, along with others, underwent expansion to incorporate scout teams, travel teams, tailored training regimes, the Sticks Strength Program, and various additional offerings.
The Sticks staff comprises coaches and trainers with boundless knowledge and a deep passion for the sport. Our highly experienced team is dedicated to fostering player development through the implementation of modern, advanced coaching techniques. Coaches, officials, and trainers exemplify respect and sportsmanship for our athletes both on and off the field.
Moreover, the Sticks staff expects parents to contribute to our professional culture by encouraging their athletes to maintain a positive attitude, exhibit good sportsmanship, and give their best effort every day. At Iowa Sticks, success is not measured solely by wins but also by player improvement, fundamental play, and a genuine understanding of sportsmanship and teamwork.
Athletes who join the Iowa Sticks gain access to multiple top-tier baseball training facilities and programs, facilitating year-round training opportunities. Additionally, players have the chance to compete and train with one of the most competitive organizations in the country.
Our staff is eager to assist athletes in becoming the best versions of themselves, both athletically and personally, and we look forward to the journey ahead.

Year start classifications, 2024 year start classifications.
Teams always have the option of registering up in classification
“A” Teams must register as “AA”. Once registered, complete and submit 2024 classification petition form.
If your team does not agree with year start classification, complete and submit 2024 classification petition form.
If your team is struggling in the current classification, complete and submit 2024 classification petition form.
2024 Team Classification Petition Form
2024 classification guidelines.
Iowa Team classifications are based on power ratings, tournament results and by overall team performance on the field.
Iowa USSSA Baseball is committed to providing a program for teams to play opponents with the same ability and talent.
Any team that is reforming from the 2023 season must start the 2024 season in the same classification (or higher) that they finished the 2023 season unless otherwise noted in 2024 team year start classifications.
For purpose of classifications, if six (6) or more players from a 2023 team are on a 2024 team, they are considered the same team regardless of the TEAM NAME, MANAGER, COACHING STAFF or SPONSOR.
The Iowa State Office will make final classification adjustments around the middle of June each season. This should give teams ample time to prepare for State and World Series plans. Please note that teams may be reclassified at any time by the Iowa USSSA Baseball State Office.
7U Coach Pitch and 8U Kid Pitch classifications
7U Coach Pitch and 8U Kid Pitch classifications will be determined during the 2024 season.
We cannot guess on classifications to start the 2024 season because we have no data from the previous season to base classifications on.
USSSA uses a very complicated and very accurate formula on ranking of teams. This is called USSSA Power Rating. Power Rating is basically based on how your team does against teams in the same classification of play.
Iowa USSSA Baseball will classify every 8 Kid Pitch team to start the season as 8KP AAA and every 7U Coach Pitch team as 7CP AAA. Weekend tournaments up through the State Tournament for 7CP and 8KP are “open” classifications and do not separate classifications of play. If a tournament director has enough 7CP or 8KP teams, most likely, the tournament format will consist of all team play pool play and then break into different single elimination championships.
The State Tournament will be divided into separate stand alone tournaments for the 7CP and 8KP age groups. Teams will be placed in these tournaments by using the power rankings and each tournament will have the same ability and talent of teams. Each separate tournament will award a USSSA State Champion.
Team Classifications
Major Classification Top 10% – 15% of the teams in the state. Best teams in the state Can Compete with Major teams in region.
AAA Classification Upper middle 20% – 35% of the teams in the state. Traveling teams Tryout teams
AA Classification Lower middle 30% – 45% of the teams in the state. Limited travel schedule Players from same local area.
A Classification Remaining 10% – 20% of the teams in the state. School teams Limited playing schedule Local tournaments
Drafted League Classification Teams formed from drafted leagues. Little League teams
Classification Disclaimer
Undoubtedly, not everyone will agree with classifications. Any team wishing to appeal a reclassification may do so after playing a minimum of six to eight USSSA tournament games after January 1, 2024 against teams in their new classification. Once the results for these games have been posted to the USSSA system, a review will be completed to determine if the team is competitive at the new level.
The term “competitive” is and always will be subjective. A team that plays a little below or above .500 in any classification is competitive. A team that loses every game by one run is also competitive.
IMPORTANT !! Do your part to help the accountability of the USSSA system. View the rosters of the teams in your age division before you play them to make sure that they are compliant with roster rules. Tournament Directors are also being told this is a requirement of them hosting USSSA events now. The class system of play works if you are part of the accountability mechanism. USSSA is the only organization in the country that can make class play work as it should and monitor it.

The Yard Outlaws
North iowa and southern minnesota travel baseball.
*The first information meeting for the Outlaws program is on December 3rd at The Yard.
Accessibility
Travel baseball needs to be available and affordable for everyone. Our program is intentionally affordable and available to all kids aged 9-13. Building up baseball in North Iowa and Southern Minnesota and making it accessible to all is our primary goal.
Outlaws will learn to respect their teammates, their coaches, and the game. We'll play hard 100% of the time. We want our players to develop the understanding that a team is needed for success in baseball, not just the individual. We have a competitive training culture in our facility where we are not afraid to fail - and we train to succeed on the field and in life. Our players respect the game, respect their coaches, and respect effort and working together. We believe performance is directly related to our training and culture. Wins and losses don't have to be coached; the results will be there because of the preparation, effort, and culture.
Development
we believe it's our job to make your players the best player they can be today, but more importantly when they're in high school and beyond. We teach and train our Outlaws the same way we train our high school and college players. We use tech and tested training methods to take your player to the next level. Improvement is what matters.
Play to Win does not mean win first. Play to win is a mentality. We want to teach our players that winning is a result of preparation and being mentally focused during competition. Winning is not the driving factor - winning is the RESULT of our foundational elements. We train and prepare properly so our minds can focus during competition and enjoy the experience.

Hawkeyes Drop Doubleheader and Series to Michigan
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader with Michigan on Saturday at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes lost game one, 4-3, and game two, 10-6.
“It was a tough day for us,” said Rick Heller. “Game one was a tight one run loss. After we went to the bullpen, the guys did a good job. Jack Young and Anthony Watts and Ganon Archer pitched really well. They gave us a chance to win, and we had so many opportunities to score and just didn’t execute at all offensively. That was something that we hadn’t seen from our ball club all season long, and unfortunately, it bit us in that one. There were just tons of things that we didn’t do well. We didn’t execute to be able to get the runs in, and then we had some bad luck as well.”
Marcus Morgan started the first game for Iowa. He threw 2 2/3 innings allowing three runs on three hits and six walks while striking out five. Ganon Archer allowed one run in two innings of work and struck out five and Anthony Watts struck out six in three innings of work. Jack Young threw the final 1 1/3 innings of the game.
The Hawkeye pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts and 10 walks in game one.
Gable Mitchell was 3-for-3 with three extra base hits (two doubles and a triple) and Raider Tello was 2-for-3.
“Then in game two, we got a good start out of Brody Brecht,” said Heller. “But we couldn’t get off the field in the sixth. The guys fought back, and we take a one-run lead in the seventh. They take a one run lead and we’re going to get out of the inning in a one-run game when we lose a ball in the sky. After that we couldn’t stop it. They end up putting five up and go up four runs in the seventh or in the eighth. And we didn’t rally, Denner settled in, and did a good job to finish us off.”
Brody Brecht started game two and went 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. He struck out 11 and walked one. Six other pitchers combined to close out the game in relief allowing five runs on seven hits.
Kyle Huckstorf was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Blake Guerin had two RBIs.
“It was a disappointing day,” said Heller. “One of those days that you felt like if you’d have played better, you could have won a couple today, but we certainly didn’t.”
Michigan stranded 25 runners on the day to Iowa’s 15, and 11 of Michigan’s 12 RBIs on the day came with two outs.
Iowa returns to action on Wednesday hosting St. Thomas at 4:05 p.m. (CT).

4/3/2024 3:57:00 PM | Baseball
By: Conor Stemme
SCHEDULE NOTE (4/4/24): Due to anticipated inclement weather in the Iowa City area, the series finale on Sunday (April 7) will now be played as part of a doubleheader on Saturday (April 6). The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. CDT. The series opener on Friday (April 5) at 2 p.m. CDT remains unchanged.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (12-17, 4-2 Big Ten) travels to Iowa City for a three-game series against Iowa (15-11, 4-2 Big Ten). The series will begin on Friday (April 5) at 2 p.m. CDT on the Big Ten Network, a Saturday (April 6) game at 2 p.m. CDT and the series finale on Sunday (April 7) at noon CDT. The final two games will be streamed live on B1G+.
• The Wolverines are 2-0 in Big Ten series after defeating Penn State and ending Maryland's streak of 23 consecutive conference series wins to sit in a tie for third in the conference with Iowa and Ohio State. U-M dropped the first games in both series before rebounding to take the final two. Against Maryland on Saturday (March 30), Jacob Denner pitched 7.2 innings of one-run baseball while the offense produced an eight-run second inning. In the Sunday (March 31) rubber match, Michigan earned the win after strong days from Mack Timbrook and Mitch Voit . Timbrook continued his success in the midweek win over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday (April 2), setting a new career high in RBI en route to an 18-6 win.
• Denner earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday (April 1) thanks to his performance against the Terrapins on Saturday. He became the third different Wolverine pitcher to earn the honor this season, with Kurt Barr earning it on March 18 and Mitch Voit on March 4. This is the first time in program history that three different pitchers have earned the award and the 18th time in conference history.
• Against Maryland, Denner went 7.2 innings and allowed just six baserunners -- three hits, two walks and one hit-by-pitch. He struck out six Terrapins and allowed just one run. With the appearance, he now has 76 for his career which ties him with Ali Husain and Mike Ignasiak for fourth all-time in career appearances. He also moved up the career strikeouts list, passing Connor O'Halloran and Oliver Jaskie to sit ninth all-time with 226 and now trails Rich Hill by three.
• Timbrook had seven hits, four runs and four RBI against Maryland and followed it up with another three-hit performance against EMU. He also set a new career high with five RBI, doing so on a three-run double and two-run double. On Sunday, he hit his second home run of the season, a three-run bomb to add insurance runs. Timbrook raised his batting average by 65 points over the last week and is tied for the team lead in stolen bases at six.
• Voit has hit .389 over the last five games with seven runs and nine RBI. He leads the team in batting average, doubles (13), innings pitched (44.1) and strikeouts (29) among other categories. He is second in doubles and eighth in the conference in hits. Voit has five home runs on the season, two of which have come over the last five games. From the mound, he set a new career high with six strikeouts on Sunday against Maryland to bring his season total to 29, already surpassing the 25 Ks he collected all of last season.
• The Wolverines are second in the nation in double plays with 33 after turning one against EMU. U-M trails only Coastal Carolina's 34. Kyle Dernedde has been involved in 24 of the double plays while Timbrook is second on the team at 22. Last season, Michigan turned 39 and is just seven away from surpassing the total.
• Stephen Hrustich homered over the weekend and is tied with Drake Westcott of Illinois for the conference lead at nine. He also ranks third in the Big Ten with 26 walks and is eighth in slugging percentage at .634. Over the last 15 games, Hrustich raised his average by more than 100 points and is third on the team with a .287 batting average. He leads Michigan with 26 runs scored and is slashing .287/.455/.634 this season.
• Over the last four games, Cole Caruso has 10 hits with five doubles. He has slashed .625/.667/.938 over those games and added seven runs and six RBI. After his strong weekend, his average improved by 60 points and is hitting .245 on the season. On the season, he is second on the team in RBI with 24 and in a tie for third in doubles with seven. Caruso had four doubles over the weekend, including three on Saturday.
• Collin Priest has hit .333 in conference games this season with two home runs. He is second on the team in average at .300, home runs (four) and slugging percentage (.620). Priest has played in 25 games with 13 starts and made his first start in the field Sunday, making the start at first base.
• Thirty-five of the 38 players on the roster have seen game action this season with 22 players recording a plate appearance and 18 players seeing action on the mound. Joonsung Park was the most recent to do so and was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance. Five players have done both this season with Voit leading the way among those with six starts on the mound and 106 plate appearances.
• Iowa is 15-11 on the season and tied for third in the Big Ten standings at 4-2. The Hawkeyes have series wins over Minnesota and Purdue in conference play and have won eight of their last 10 games. All-time, U-M is 124-60 against Iowa dating back to 1893. In conference play, the Wolverines are 106-50 and 59-26 in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have taken five of the last seven games, including two games last season in the Big Ten Tournament, the second a 5-0 win that eliminated U-M.

Three takeaways from Iowa baseball’s series loss to Michigan
The Iowa baseball team dropped its first series in Big Ten conference play to Michigan this weekend, losing two of three games.
After a thrilling 3-2 walk-off victory in extras on Friday, the Hawkeyes dropped the next two games in a double-header on Saturday by margins of 4-3 and 10-6, respectively, to lose the series.
Iowa moves to 5-4 in conference play, dropping to third place in the standings. Here are three takeaways from the series loss.
Obermueller embraces new role
After making his first start in a Saturday slot last weekend, going five innings while allowing two earned runs against Minnesota, Obermueller appeared in the Friday position against Michigan.
Against the Wolverines, Obermueller fanned six batters across almost five innings while giving up a pair of runs.
“Cade Obermueller pitched great for three innings — as good as he’s pitched this year,” Heller said in a press release. “And then he kind of lost it and gave them some free bases, and we ended up giving them a couple of runs.”
Still, Obermueller has been the most consistent of the starting pitchers this season. The lefty leads the starters in ERA, innings pitched, and WHIP while holding opponents to a batting average of .157.
Brecht and Morgan continue to struggle
Beside Obermueller, the rest of the Iowa starting pitching staff has been inconsistent all season.
This past weekend, the third-year tandem of Brody Brecht and Marcus Morgan gave up eight runs in eight innings pitched and walked eight batters in the process.
Brecht, a potential future MLB lottery pick, has yet to adjust to Big Ten opponents this season. After notching an impressive 1.52 ERA in his five non-conference starts, Brecht has posted an 11.44 ERA against all three conference foes this season.
For Iowa’s third starter in Morgan, it has been a struggle to find his footing so far this season.
Morgan started the season with a sharp outing against Ball State, throwing scoreless baseball for almost six innings while fanning nine batters.
Since then, however, Morgan has yet to find his groove on the mound. The Iowa City local this season has posted an 8.42 ERA in 31 innings pitched. While striking out 39 batters, the righty has allowed 42 free bases to opponents.
For the Hawkeyes to make a push for their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, they will need both Brecht and Morgan to find their groove in the second half of the season.
Moore keeps impressing in his first season
After not seeing any game action in the 2023 season, designated hitter and catcher Reese Moore is emerging as a consistent threat in the Iowa batting order.
Entering the series, Moore posted an impressive .344 batting average while getting on base at a 0.451 clip, good for third-best on the team.
Against the Wolverines, it was much of the same. While playing both catcher and designated hitter again, Moore went 5-of-9 at the plate with an RBI.
The Iowa baseball team will stay home for one more game with a midweek competition against St. Thomas before taking the road against Ohio State.

Double-A baseball team trolls Iowa football’s offense after scoring 28 runs in a game
- Published: Apr. 10, 2024, 1:01 p.m.
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz welcomes players back to the sideline as Michigan and Iowa face off for the Big 10 Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021. Jacob Hamilton | The Ann Arbor News

It’s been 100 days since Iowa football’s season ended.
But the Hawkeyes’ putrid 2023 offense is still catching random strays across the sports world.
The latest shot came from Minor League Baseball after the AA Durham Bulls beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 28-10 on Tuesday.
“Good morning. We’ve scored 28 in a game as many times as Iowa football did last season,” the Tampa Bay Rays affiliate posted to X.
Good morning. We’ve scored 28 in a game as many times as Iowa football did last season. https://t.co/mv2x6WdrPq — Durham Bulls (@DurhamBulls) April 10, 2024
Well then. Shots fired.
But whoever is behind the account isn’t lying. Iowa scored 28 points in a game just once during the 2023 season, doing so in a 41-10 win against Western Michigan on Sept. 16.
Otherwise, the Hawkeyes’ offense was lifeless under Brian Ferentz, averaging 15.4 points per game. Iowa was held scoreless three times, losing 31-10 to Penn State, 26-0 to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship and 35-0 to Tennessee in the Citrus Bowl.
The Hawkeyes also lost a 12-10 game to Minnesota and won games scoring just 15 points (twice), 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
Iowa brought in former Western Michigan head coach Tim Lester to serve as offensive coordinator for 2024 and is hoping for better things with ex-Michigan QB Cade McNamara healthy under center.
The Hawkeyes open the 2024 season against Illinois State on Aug. 31.

2024 women's NCAA Tournament Final Four dates, game times, TV, location, teams and more
The stars will be out on Friday night in the women's Final Four.
Iowa's Caitlin Clark , South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso, UConn's Paige Bueckers and NC State's Aziaha James will all take the court in Cleveland with a trip to the national championship game on the line, and each has their own calling card as they enter the championship rounds.
Clark's story is well-documented at this point , but endlessly impressive nonetheless: She put together a Her-culean effort in Iowa's win over LSU in the Elite Eight, with a 41-point game (and a bit of revenge). Cardoso has been a force in the paint for the Gamecocks, and she'll look to take her game to the next level at the conclusion of the women's tournament.
J ames has exploded in the tournament , capping off brilliant performance after brilliant performance with a 7-for-9 night from 3-point land in the Wolfpack's win over Texas in the Elite Eight. Last, and certainly not least, Bueckers wants to cap off this UConn run with that elusive championship – but she plans to run it back with the Huskies next season should things go south between now and then.
