About Iceland Travel

Our core story

We founded Iceland Travel in 1936 – back when they called travellers “explorers” rather than “tourists” – and for almost 100 years now we’ve been proudly serving the diverse needs of clients from all four corners.

With a uniquely local perspective. Living and working in Iceland for so long gives us insight that cannot be bought or borrowed, only earned. We know how to work far in advance, booking up resources early so we can offer the best availability and the best price to our clients. Just like we know which remote farm offers a surprisingly sophisticated tasting menu. How to navigate even the most maze-like conference center. Or where you can buy the perfect wool jumper. With us, each trip feels like it took a century of connections to build – because it did.

When our clients’ guests arrive, our local knowledge means we’re able to care for them in the best way. We’ve solved all manner of problems over the years, and developed smooth and simple processes that stop most of them cropping up. But if something ever does – we’re always there on the ground to make it right. We make everything easy, through seamless local service. Iceland’s not just where we do business, though. It’s our home. And we believe in caring for our home. We’re committed to responsible travelling and leaving a positive footprint that in turn supports the efforts of the agents we serve. Our mindful approach helps to make sure that everyone that passes through the country can enjoy it pristine and unspoiled – just like our first intrepid explorers almost a century ago.

Welcome to Iceland Travel ehf.

This Month we get to know better Iceland Travel ehf.

Tell us your story. How did Iceland Travel ehf. get started?

Iceland Travel ehf. was founded in 1937 with a mission to introduce travelers to the captivating landscapes of Iceland. Over the years, our commitment to delivering excellent travel experiences and exceptional service has propelled us to become a leading tour company in Iceland.

In 2021, we became a part of the Travel Connect group, a consortium of reputable travel brands. This strategic integration reflects our dedication to excellence and allows us to leverage collective strengths for enhanced customer satisfaction. Iceland Travel continues to lead in the travel industry with a history and a focus on delivering unique travel experiences.

What sets Iceland Travel ehf. apart?

Within the Travel Connect group the travel agencies Iceland Travel, Nine Worlds, Nordic Visitor, Terra Nova, and Iceland Tours are members of Travelife. This is an internationally recognized training, management, and certification program for sustainability in tourism. Travelife is recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

Travelife has a 3-stage approach, and Iceland Travel is currently at the second stage, Travelife Partner. Travel Connect and its brands, including Iceland Travel, are the first in Iceland to have achieved this certification.

Now, we are working towards the third and final level, Travelife Certified. To reach Travelife Certified, we must meet further sustainability criteria grouped into 5 key areas: office operations, product development, working with suppliers, customer relations, and destinations. We have already passed the desk top audit for Travelife Certified, and hopefully the 3rd party independent audit will be completed in the next few weeks, and thereby granting Iceland Travel the status of Travelife Certified.

What is your favourite success story from your organisation?

One of our most notable success stories was working with one of our clients in 2019 for a conference called "What Drives a Black Hole." Their interest was to host the conference in Iceland, and planning progressed throughout that year. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it had to be rescheduled twice—first in March 2020 and again in March 2021.

In early 2022, with COVID-19 situation improving in Iceland, we contacted the organizers to discuss the possibility of resuming the conference plans. Despite the pandemic's impact, we were able to navigate the strict border controls and protocols in place at the time. We provided the participants with information on the travel requirements, including presenting a negative test before boarding their flight to Iceland & vaccination.

Fortunately, by the time the conference took place, all travel restrictions had been lifted. The event went smoothly, and the organizing committee expressed satisfaction with our dedication and flexibility during such challenging circumstances. This conference marked a significant achievement, especially considering the numerous hurdles.

Interestingly, this conference had faced prior cancellations—

first in 2010 due to the Eyjafjallajökull eruption. It wasn't until 2019 that the planning resumed. The success of this conference generated positive word-of-mouth, leading to another astronomy conference scheduled for 2024.

In conclusion, our ability to successfully host the "What Drives a Black Hole" conference despite the challenges of a global pandemic highlights our commitment and adaptability in delivering successful events for our clients.

Another greatly successful event was when Iceland Travel Conference Team was able to hold the annual Arctic Circle assembly in 2021. During unprecedented global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as travel restrictions, health concerns, and uncertain circumstances, the prospects of hosting a large-scale event seemed daunting.

However, the Iceland Travel Conference teamed together with the Arctic Circle Secretariat, driven by a shared vision and an unyielding commitment to their mission, forged ahead with meticulous planning and a laser-focused approach to health and safety.

Each morning of the conference began with an essential ritual: COVID-19 testing for all attendees. This rigorous daily testing regimen demonstrated an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of every participant. Through a collaborative effort between medical professionals and event staff, the testing process was seamlessly integrated into the conference schedule, setting an unparalleled standard for event safety.   Remarkably, as the days unfolded, the testing yielded a resounding affirmation of the conference's meticulous planning. Amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic, not a single positive test emerged among the 1500 attendees. This accomplishment was a testament to the dedication of the organizers, the adherence of participants to safety protocols, and the spirit of unity that pervaded the event.

In the annals of 2021, the story of the Arctic Cricle Assembly shines as a beacon of hope and accomplishment. It stands as a testament to the power of innovation, resilience, and unity, and serves as a reminder that even in the midst of a global pandemic, human ingenuity knows no bounds.

What can we expect to see from Iceland Travel ehf. in the future?

In the near future, Iceland Travel ehf. is set to solidify its position as a leading MICE destination, leveraging our established expertise and strong industry connections. Our focus on sustainability will remain firm.

We are dedicated to integrating responsible practices into our operations, aspiring to not only meet but also set industry benchmarks for environmentally-conscious travel. This approach mirrors our commitment to offering exceptional corporate experiences while maintaining our environmental responsibilities intact. As we move forward, our vision encompasses a harmonious blend of excellence and sustainability in all aspects of our offerings.

Which trends do you see in the Association Meetings?

In the realm of Association Meetings, several discernible trends have been shaping the arena, responding to both industry shifts and attendee preferences. Post-pandemic, the adoption of Hybrid Meetings has surged, accommodating participants' varying comfort levels and travel constraints. We have observed a greater emphasis on Sustainability, aligning with our commitment as well as the conscientious preferences of attendees and organizing committees alike.

An increasing focus on Wellness and Well-being has emerged, with participants seeking mindful respites during meetings. The utilization of Data-Driven Insights has become instrumental in tailoring experiences, ensuring sessions, content, and networking opportunities resonate effectively. Simultaneously, the spotlight on Diversity and Inclusion is more prominent, calling for equitable representation and inclusive environments within these gatherings.

Heightened attention to Health and Safety measures, catalyzed by recent global events, is paramount in planning and executing successful Association Meetings. Our dedication to addressing these trends underlines our commitment to crafting meaningful experiences that seamlessly adapt to the evolving needs of attendees and the expectations of today's dynamic event arena.

What is an industry challenge your organisation is facing currently?

At Iceland Travel ehf., we are actively addressing the complex challenge posed by the growing popularity of Reykjavik, particularly during peak seasons. Our strategic response involves encouraging conference committees to explore alternative locations beyond the downtown area.

This approach not only alleviates pressure on downtown resources but also fosters enriched interactions among participants through on-site activities. By diversifying conference venues, we remain committed to providing exceptional experiences while navigating the demands of our dynamic industry. As Reykjavik's appeal continues to grow, the diversification of conference venues enhances attendee experiences, contributing to a comprehensive journey and greater satisfaction.

If you like taking energizing walks on colorful beaches with breathtaking views, you’ll love your time in Iceland! Our tours follow the coastal Route 1 all around the country, giving you endless opportunities to visit Iceland’s famous volcanic black sand beaches.

The best-known is Reynisfjara , which TripAdvisor and National Geographic both name as one of the best beaches in the world! You’ll see this beautiful beach on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. If you pick our Westfjords tours, you’ll also see white, golden, and even red sand beaches!

Lava Formations

Explore Iceland’s astonishing lava formations on our tours

On our tours of Iceland, you’ll see an ever-changing country packed with breathtaking geological marvels, including beautiful basalt columns, jagged pinnacles, and jet-black lava flows. Home to some of the fiercest volcanoes ever known, more than a third of the world’s recorded lava since the Middle Ages has poured across Iceland! On our Ring Road and South Coast tours , you’ll see how lava has shaped the country into what it is today, where more than 30 active volcano systems have created astonishing sights like Stuðlagil Canyon , the Eldhraun lava field, and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara .

See the “Arch with a Hole” summer home to Puffins

Offering some of the best views on the South Coast, Dyrhólaey (Door Hill Island) is a spectacular promontory rising more than a hundred meters high above the Atlantic. Close to the most southerly point in Iceland, fierce waves pound the shores below. You’ll enjoy phenomenal panoramic views of towering stone arches, gleaming glaciers, brooding volcanoes, and Iceland’s famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara . If you look closely, you’ll see the Reynisdrangar too!  In the summer, thousands of puffins and other seabirds flock here, so it’s an excellent spot for bird watching!

Blue Lagoon

Take a dip at Iceland’s famous Geothermal SPA

Experience a spa day like no other with a trip to Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon . This geothermal paradise guarantees relaxation and rejuvenation after a day of exploring. Some of our Golden Circle & Ring Road tours include an option to visit here, where you can lie back in the warming waters, admire the astonishing views of the jet-black lava fields, exfoliate, and enjoy a drink at the swim-up bar. Close to the airport and the city, the Blue Lagoon is the perfect place to sample the best of Iceland’s famous hot pots, where the mineral-rich healing waters will send you to heaven!

Whale Watching

Enjoy an unforgettable whale watching tour in Iceland!

With more than twenty types of whales visiting Iceland every year, it’s one of the best places in the world to take a whale watching tour. When we visit Akureyri in North Iceland on our Ring Road tours , get ready to spot humpbacks, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, and porpoise s . If you’re lucky, you might see a Blue whale, the most enormous creature ever known! Whales and other cetaceans come to Iceland to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, and some stay all year round now. Imagine the joy of seeing whales and dolphins in the wild – you can do that when you visit Iceland!

Explore the land of ten thousand waterfalls on our tours!

Iceland is covered by glaciers and snow-capped mountains, so that means there’s a lot of crystal-clear meltwater tumbling over cliffs and rushing to the sea. Some say there are over 10,000 waterfalls in Iceland, and you’ll see some of the most famous falls on our Golden Circle , South Coast , and Ring Road tours . There are hidden waterfalls, multi-tiered falls, widescreen cascades where rainbows dance on sunny days, and even waterfalls where you can walk behind the waters! We’ll show you some of the best fosses in Iceland – and they’re all easy to reach too!

Volcanic Craters

See Iceland’s spectacular volcanic craters on our tours!

Iceland is less than 20 million years old, created by underwater volcanoes rising up along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge with a pipeline of molten magma straight from the Earth’s burning core. Dozens of volcanoes dot the country, and many are still active, which means you can explore fascinating volcanic formations at different geological stages! On our Golden Circle tours, you’ll see the multicolored crater at Kerið. Grábrok Craters are included in itineraries for our Westfjords Tours . There are countless more craters to be seen on our Ring Road and Silver Circle tours!

Seal Watching

Go seal spotting while you’re on tour in Iceland!

Iceland is a haven for several seal species, with little colonies of these captivating creatures dotted around the country. On our South Coast & Glacier Lagoon and Ring Road tours , you’ll have a chance to spot them at Jökulsárlón, where seals are often seen basking on the floating icebergs. Iceland’s coastline features golden sandy beaches where Harbor and Gray seals make their home, including Ytri-Tunga , a stop on our  Snaefellsnes tour in West Iceland.

Notably the highest chances to see them is when taking one of Westfjords Tours . It’s your best chance to see these gorgeous creatures in their natural habitat!

River Rafting

Take a ride on a thrilling river rafting tour experience!

Iceland’s fast-flowing glacial rivers offer you a fantastic adventure experience when you join one of our adrenaline-pumping river rafting tours. Jump on sturdy rafts not far from Gullfoss waterfall on the Golden Circle , and paddle through the twisting turns of the Brúarhlöð volcanic rock canyon on the White River! Soak up the stunning scenery as you float downstream, safe in the hands of expert guides, with all the equipment you’ll need provided. It’s one of the most exciting adventure activities you can take in Iceland!

Northern Lights

Want to see the Northern Lights? Then book an Multi-Day Tour during winter time!

Seeing a display of the magical Northern Lights is an unforgettable experience, and Iceland is one of the most beautiful places in the world to witness this colorful cosmic spectacle. Clear, dark skies are needed to see the Northern Lights at their best, far away from streetlights. So when you book a winter multi-day tour , you’ll have the best chance to see the Northern Lights when you stay overnight in the remote Icelandic countryside. The darker the nights get, the brighter the lights can be seen. Choose one of our winter tours for an experience you’ll never forget!

Explore Iceland’s unique ice caves on our exciting tours!

More than a tenth of Iceland is covered by glaciers, making it the perfect place to get a close look at these astonishing frozen wonders. On our South Coast tours , you can opt for an unforgettable Ice Cave experience at Vatnajökull . Iceland’s glaciers are constantly changing, so your ice cave trip will be unique – nobody else will see the same sight again! Strap on some crampons and discover fascinating ice formations, including stalagmites, stalactites, and spectacular blue ice caves, safe in the hands of our experienced glacier guides. Tours operate between late October to April.

Lava Caving

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Viking outlaws used these places as hideouts – now you can explore here too!

Golden Circle

See Iceland’s most famous sights

Tour the Golden Circle to see the glittering jewels in Iceland’s crown. In one convenient day trip from the capital, you’ll see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the geothermal wonders of Geysir , and the spectacular rift valley at Þingvellir National Park . The Golden Circle offers you the best of Iceland’s natural beauty and history, where you can walk in Viking footsteps between two continents! Stand back as a geyser erupts at Haukadalur Geothermal Area every few minutes and admire the view at Gullfoss, a tremendous two-tiered waterfall fed by glacial meltwater.

Hot Spring Bathing

Take a dip in Iceland’s famous geothermal spas on our tours

Enjoying a dip in a geothermal hot spring spa or pool is a daily ritual for Icelanders, like going to a coffee shop or a bar. There are dozens of natural hot spring spas, swimming pools, and outdoor hot pots all over the country, waiting for you to jump in and relax! Our Golden Circle tours include options to visit the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon near Reykjavík, while our Silver Circle tours include an authentic stone-walled hot pot in a remote canyon! Our Ring Road tours also feature several geothermal swimming pools around the country, where the locals love to relax too.

Take our tours of Iceland to admire its gorgeous glaciers

Close to the Arctic Circle and just 300 miles wide, Iceland is the perfect place to explore glaciers and ice caps. These frozen blue wonders can be seen easily as you explore Iceland on our Ring Road tours . That’s because outlet glaciers and glacier tongues reach down from  Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and from Vatnajökull in the East right down to the coast, making it easy to get up close to these majestic sights. Centuries of snow and ice have created these incredible glaciers, but they are retreating now due to climate change. Don’t miss your chance to see these marvels while you can!

Glacier Hike

Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour

Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. That’s because our South Coast tours visit Sólheimajökull in South Iceland, where you can strap on crampons and take an unforgettable stroll across this ever-changing environment. Gaze at incredible ice formations, crossing crevasses, and exploring ice caves, all in the hands of knowledgeable expert guides. Note : Our Glacier Hike tours operate between April and October.

Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss. But there are more stunning canyons in Iceland, like Vatnsjfjörður, Kólugljúfur or Þingvellir just to name a few.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Where else will you get a chance to cruise between towering icebergs as they sway around the spectacular lagoon? Don’t miss this magical experience! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Eiriksstadir is a reconstructed Viking-era longhouse in Iceland, which provides a glimpse into the architectural style of the early settlers. Hlíðartúnshúsin (located in Borgarnes) is a collection of several turf houses that were first built more than a hundred years ago. You’ll see a sheep barn, a cowshed, and even a hut used to store potatoes!

Iceland is also famous for turf-roofed churches, such as the iconic Viðimýrarkirkja and Hofskirkja, showcasing the continuation of this architectural tradition into religious buildings.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.

Once a little 17 th -century fishing village and trading station, Akureyri is now a bustling town. You’ll find funky cafés, restaurants, art galleries, design stores and a botanical garden to explore.

Even though it’s very close to the Arctic Circle, the 20,000 people who call Akureyri their home enjoy some of the country’s warmest and most stable weather.

As you walk the streets of Akureyri, make sure you take a look at the traffic lights. All the red lights are heart-shaped!

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!

This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. This is a spellbinding place that has to be seen to be believed, with three geothermally-heated pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F), a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, all designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Rauðisandur Red Beach

Find yourself on the Westernmost Beach in Europe!

Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Its name translates to “Red Sand,” but the beach is actually a unique blend of golden, beige, and reddish hues . The vast expanse of Rauðisandur stretches for nearly 10 kilometers and is backed by stunning cliffs and mountains. The beach is known for its tranquil beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for solitude and relaxation.

The remote location and untouched beauty of Rauðisandur make it a hidden gem that captivates those who venture to this off-the-beaten-path destination.

Bolafjall Sky Walk

Take a walk on top of one of the most beautiful summits in Iceland!

Bolafjall is a prominent mountain located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Rising up to an elevation of 638 meters , it offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and coastal landscape.

In the recent year, on the summit of Bolafjall impressing viewing platform with sky walk was constructed, just right next to old American radar station. It allows you to witness the beauty of the rugged terrain and the vast ocean beyond. The road leading to the top is very steep and narrow, but no worries! You will be taken there by our experienced drivers.

See the most powerful waterfall in the whole of Europe!

Dettifoss is a mighty and powerful waterfall located in Northeast Iceland. It is known for being the most powerful waterfall in Europe , with a massive volume of water cascading over its rocky edge.

The sheer force and thundering sound of Dettifoss are awe-inspiring, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. The waterfall is situated in the Vatnajökull National Park, surrounded by rugged landscapes and dramatic cliffs. Accessible via a well-maintained trail, Dettifoss offers breathtaking viewpoints from which to admire its grandeur.

Discover the hidden gem of the South Coast with us!

Gljúfrabúi is a hidden gem located in Iceland, near the popular tourist attraction, Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many ! To reach Gljúfrabúi, you´ll need to walk through a narrow opening in the rock and wade through ankle-deep water in a small canyon. Inside, you will be greeted by a magnificent waterfall cascading down from a steep cliff. Remember to wear solid shoes and take your raincoat with!

Diamond Beach

Take a walk among the “Diamonds”!

Diamond Beach, also known as Jökulsárlón Beach, is a mesmerizing natural wonder located in Iceland. It is situated near the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where icebergs from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier float into the Atlantic Ocean.

The beach gets its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the black sand , resembling diamonds on the shore. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark volcanic sand creates a breathtaking sight. Diamond Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning opportunities to capture the beauty of nature.

Walk on a lava arch and see many stunning sights!

Arnastapi is a small village located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. It is known for its stunning coastal scenery, with cliffs, gorges, and rock formations.

The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. One of the main attractions in Arnarstapi is the famous Gatklettur, a natural arch rock formation that stands tall against the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West

Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.

It’s one of the busiest towns in West Iceland, a focal point for fishing, culture and commerce for a thousand years. But you can still feel its Viking roots wherever you look!

You’ll discover that it has a cheerful small-town vibe that makes it a delight to explore. So take a walk around its pretty streets and rocky shoreline, and enjoy the stunning views across the fjord to Hafnarfjall!

We usually arrive there around 5-6 pm, crossing the fjord over the second-longest bridge in Iceland, with stunning views to enjoy on both sides of the waters.

Enjoy an afternoon and overnight stay in the charming, geothermal village

Hveragerði catches your attention with steam vents billowing vapor into the air everywhere you look. You’ll be amazed by the endless rows of geothermally-heated greenhouses, where bananas and other fruits are grown all year round!

The town is surrounded by moss-covered lava fields and towering volcanic mountains. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through this area, so there are frequent earthquakes. That means new hot springs are constantly opening up in this highly active area, even in people’s homes and gardens!

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, there’s a wide selection of bars and restaurants. Some even use geothermal power for carbon-neutral cooking! Make sure you try the tomato soup while you’re here!

We usually arrive there around 4 pm – which gives you plenty of time to enjoy this charming town.

Hraunfossar Lava Waterfalls

See a unique waterfall when you book a Silver Circle tour

Iceland is filled with unique sights, and one of the most mesmerizing is the “Lava Waterfalls” at Hraunfossar . Part of the Silver Circle tour route, glacial meltwater gently cascades down a series of steps from the middle of moss-covered lava cliffs, with the falls stretching for hundreds of meters. The waters seep through the Hallmundarhraun lava field until reaching the White River before tumbling gracefully below. You can enjoy the Lava Waterfall from different perspectives at several viewing platforms. It’s an extraordinary sight!

Explore Iceland’s wildest region

If you want to see Iceland at its wildest, the Westfjords await you! Lonely Planet picked the Westfjords as its No.1 place to go – here’s your chance to see it!

The Westfjords are one of Iceland’s oldest regions, and coming here is like taking a step back in time. A spectacular series of stunning fjords cut through dramatic peninsulas dotted with pretty fishing villages, thundering waterfalls, towering cliffs, and colorful beaches, reached by winding mountain roads. Few people live here, so it’s one of the most peaceful and relaxing regions Iceland has to offer. Look out for seals, puffins, and Arctic foxes – there are more of them than people! Take the Westfjords Way with us – a road trip you’ll never forget!

Vik í Myrdal

Charming, southernmost village in Iceland

The picturesque village of Vik í Myrdal is perfect for a photo stop on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. Atlantic waves roll in with full force at the most southerly point on Iceland’s mainland, pounding the black sand beaches. Vík is the warmest coastal town in the country, and the summer air is filled with migrating birds. Walk its pretty streets and admire the gorgeous hilltop church atop the town’s highest point! Enjoy another view of the Reynisdrangar from there!

Þingvellir National Park

Where two continents split apart

A place of outstanding natural beauty, Þingvellir National Park offers you a unique opportunity to walk in Viking footsteps between two continents. The tectonic plates of North America and Europe are pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here, increasing Iceland’s size every day! The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , making it a must-see stop on our Golden Circle tours.

South Coast

See the best of Iceland’s stunning South Coast

Explore the treasures of the South Coast on our tours, discovering stunning landscapes lined with thundering waterfalls, immense glaciers, towering volcanoes, and dramatic black sand beaches! Easily reached from the city, the South Coast is an unforgettable dreamland of astonishing natural wonders. Hike across a glacier at Sólheimajökull , or maybe discover a hidden waterfall? Walk on an endless black sand beach at Reynisfjara or enjoy a thrilling walk behind a waterfall at Seljalandsfoss ? These are just some of the magical experiences you can enjoy on a tour of the sensational South Coast!

Snæfellsnes

See the “Iceland in Miniature”

Close to the capital and easily reached, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is an ideal tour to discover all of Iceland’s best features in just one day! The “Snow Mountain Peninsula” is often called “ Iceland in Miniature ” because you can find photogenic mountains (including Kirkjufell ), beautiful beaches, plunging waterfalls, seal colonies, ancient lava fields, and a towering stratovolcano in one place! Some say the peninsula has mystical qualities as one of the planet’s many “chakra” centers. It also inspired Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”!

Soothe yourself after a day on tour with a dip at Sky Lagoon

One of Iceland’s newest and most impressive geothermal spa experiences, Sky Lagoon offers you a memorable experience with astonishing views of the Atlantic. Relax in the perfectly regulated waters surrounded by volcanic rocks and a turf-roofed visitor center. Enjoy the 75-meter infinity pool, and order a drink at the swim-up bar! You can opt for an authentic Icelandic bathing experience with the Seven-Step Ritual , including saunas, cold mist showers, and exfoliating scrubs. It’s one of the most spectacular geothermal spa experiences in the world!

Seljalandsfoss

Take a walk behind a waterfall on our South Coast tours

Seljalandsfoss is a graceful waterfall that tumbles over 60 meters from Eyjafjallajökull , a volcano on Iceland’s stunning South Coast . It has a special feature that makes it even more exciting – there’s a path you can take all the way around the cascade! It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!

Reynisfjara Black Beach

See one of the most famous beaches in the world

If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Lined with beautiful basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar completes the cinematic scene, towering sea stacks looming offshore! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!

Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon

Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! Come and see these multicolored icy marvels for yourself at this bucket-list location, and look out for seals basking on the bergs too!

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Walk into the cave hidden behind the falls!

Hveragerði has several fine restaurants and cafés, and some offer unique dishes that use the underground heat! For example, Ölverk Pizza & Brewery specialize in wood-fired pizzas while using geothermal heat to brew their high-quality craft ales. You can also have a snack inside the greenhouse at Rósa Kaffi . Nearby, The Greenhouse Hotel is also home to a food hall with several options, including tacos, burgers, fried chicken and Asian cuisine. More options are available here, so you’re guaranteed a great meal, whatever you’re in the mood for.

Iceland ProTravel Group

We have a team of over 60 destination specialist, who not only have a great knowledge of our countries, but have a passion serving and selling our products. All our staff is dedicated to make your journey unforgettable.

Our history

Island protravel germany, island protravel switzerland, island protravel holding, iceland protravel uk, iceland protravel is & island protravel sweden, island protravel denmark, island protravel norway, iceland profishing, norway protravel and island tours switzerland, iceland procruises, iceland proinvestment, iceland proservices, island tours germany, nordic holidays, ipt scandinavia integration, island prohotels ehf. / hótel ísland / iceland prohotels switzerland, island prohotels ehf. / hótel ísland comfort, island reisen - germany.

It all started in Hamburg, with the founding of Island ProTravel by Gudmundur Kjartansson and Ann-Cathrin Bröcker, who teamed to establish a specialized tour operator for trips to Iceland and Greenland.

The Swiss team joined Island ProTravel one year after the company's founding. Its office is based in Rapperswil-Jona.

All companies of the Iceland ProTravel Group are now part of the established IPT Holding.

IPT extended its locations further, with the opening of an office based in the United Kingdom, to manage the high demand of British travelers appropriately.

The IPT group had reason to celebrate two exciting new openings in one year, with offices in Reykjavik and Stockholm. From now on we can serve incoming guests directly in our destination coutnry.

A Danish team joins the Island ProTravel Group in Copenhagen, to expand the Scandinavian market and offices.

Island ProTravel opens up a new market with the founding of IPT Norway, based in Oslo.

Due to the high demand and interest in fishing trips to Iceland, IPT establishes a new company, specialized in fishing trips in the Westfjords of Iceland.

The IPT Group can celebrate two company foundations in one year again. Norway ProTravel in Hamburg is the newly established tour operator specialized in travel packages to Scandinavia. With the integration of Island Tours Switzerland a new Iceland and Scandinavia specialist takes care of individual travelers.

Iceland ProCruises proudly charters the cruise ship “Ocean Diamond” as the first Icelandic company offering “soft-expedition” cruises to Iceland and Greenland.

Iceland ProInvestment is founded.

Iceland ProServices is founded in Reykjavik, as our clearing house and service department for our clients on site.

IPT extends its product portfolio further with the acquisition of Island Tours in Karlsruhe, Germany, our Iceland specialist focusing on individual travelers.

IPT acquires nordic holidays, our latest Nordic travel specialist, with winter in Lapland being the heart of the product portfolio.

We integrate the three Iceland ProTravel companies Island ProTravel Norge (NO), Island ProTravel Danmark (DK) and Island ProTravel Scandinavia (SE) into Iceland ProTravel ehf. (IS). Our new website for the Scandinavian market www.islandprotravel.com is launched.

We welcome Hótel Ísland to the IPT Group. The hotel together with Restaurant Hekla and Silfra Spa are centrally located in Reykjavik. The newly renovated 3 star plus accommodation perfectly complements our product range as a tour operator.

Our latest IPT Group member is Hótel Ísland Comfort in Kópavogur, a cozy and conveniently located 3-star hotel in the greater Reykjavík area. Hótel Ísland Comfort is perfect for groups and those, who want to explore the vibrant capital of Iceland.

We're proud to welcome the tour operator and Iceland specialist Island Reisen in Berlin as a member of IPT Holding.

COVID 19 Travel Information

Iceland’s borders are open to travelers worldwide, who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have immunity from the virus. This includes travelers from non-Schengen countries.

As of February 1, 2022, all travelers to Iceland are required to have a booster shot, if their previous vaccine was taken more than 9 months ago. For a single-dose vaccine, this means 270 days from the first and only shot. For a two-dose vaccine it means 270 days from the second shot. A booster dose cancels this expiration date, as long as the booster was administered at least 14 days prior to arrival.

All vaccinated travelers, as well as those who have recovered from COVID-19, must present a negative COVID-test before boarding an aircraft or ship to Iceland.

Both PCR test and COVID-19 rapid antigen tests are accepted. The test must have been taken within 72 hours before departure on the first leg of your journey.

As of July 1, 2021, vaccinated travellers and children are no longer tested at Iceland’s borders, although unvaccinated travellers are still required to undergo testing and five-day quarantine upon entering the country.

81% of Iceland’s population aged 5 and over are fully vaccinated.

Iceland is not considered a warm place by any normal standards, but thanks to the Gulf Stream temperatures are usually moderate all year round. Average temperatures in July are usually about 12 °C in Reykjavik and it is usually a bit warmer in the North and East of Iceland. It doesn’t snow as much in Iceland as many people think, especially in Reykjavik where there is usually very little snow to be seen, even during winter. However in the north and east of Iceland and the West Fjords, there is more snow during winter. A big factor in Icelandic weather is that it is unpredictable; you never know what is going to happen next. A beautiful day can suddenly turn windy and rainy (and vice versa), and you can expect to see every weather imaginable in a couple of days in Iceland, especially in late autumn and early spring.

Telephone code

The telephone code into Iceland from overseas is +354 and then a seven-digit number. There are no area codes.

The daylight in Iceland is from mid-May to mid-August and the sun only sets for around 3 hours per day, and there is effectively light for the whole 24-hour period. In midwinter, there are around 5 hours of effective daylight. These long and short periods of daylight add drama to the atmosphere with lingering twilight.

Visa policy

  • Western Europeans and citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore do not require visas. Tourist stays are permitted for up to three months, and can be easily extended at local police stations. If you do not live in Western Europe or one of the countries mentioned above, then contact the Icelandic embassy or consulate in your country to make sure you have a valid visa before entering Iceland If there is not an Icelandic embassy or consulate in your country, you approach the Danish embassy or consulate.

The first people believed to have settled in Iceland were Irish monks who came in the eight century AD. They left, however, upon the arrival of pagan Norsemen, who came in 874 to seek freedom from Norway’s oppressive king Harald Fairhair. In 930 the Icelanders founded the Althingi, their supreme general assembly – the oldest parliament in the world. Christianity was adopted in the year 1000. In 1262, Iceland became subject to Norwegian control and in 1380 came under Danish control, along with Norway. After the granting of a constitution (1874) and with an improving economy, Iceland, in 1918, finally became an independent sovereign state under a common king with Denmark. The Republic of Iceland was formally declared on June 17, 1944.The Icelanders Are quite Scandinavian, exceptionally friendly, highly educated, sophisticated, attractive, honest and very modern. Their ancestors were predominately Norwegian, although some came from the British Isles.

Languages in Iceland The country’s written and spoken language is Icelandic, a Nordic language very similar to the language spoken by Iceland’s first settlers. Icelandic is one of the oldest living languages in Europe. English and Danish are mandatory subjects in school. Most Icelanders speak fluent English. In fact, they welcome the opportunity – so never be shy about approaching an Icelander.

The Icelandic Population The Icelandic population was 319.368 the first of January 2009, there are about 4 times that many sheep in Iceland. Iceland is the least populated country in Europe (seventh in the world). Most of the people are of Norwegian descent, with some admixture of Celtic blood from those who came from Ireland and the Scottish islands from the time of settlement.

Monetary unit

The Icelandic monetary unit is the “krona” (plural “kronur”) (ISK). Coins are in denominations of: 100 kr, 50 kr, 10 kr, 5 kr, 1 kr. Medical help

Pharmacies Icelanders enjoy a healthy life, thanks to clean air, water and quality fish. Water is safe to drink throughout Iceland. Pharmacies are called “Apotek” and are open during normal business hours. Many are open at night. Reykjavik has many great general practitioners, as well as specialists, many of whom will receive patients at short notice. There are also many Health Centers in Reykjavik, with officially appointed family doctors who receive patients at short notice during the day.

Medical help There are medical centers and/or hospitals in all major cities and towns in Iceland. The emergency phone number (24 hours) in Iceland is 112.

Sea kayaking, one of the most exhilarating ways to experience antarctica, the arctic and beyond..

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of  Antarctica ,  the Arctic , and some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle between brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

In Antarctica, keep your camera on-hand for unforgettable encounters with penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, prepare to  paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large iceberg.

Led by  experienced guides , you and your small group of like-minded adventurers will paddle between ice floes, brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Paddling is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and therefore make the most of your time in the wild and remote  destinations we visit .

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often taking a snack and a flask of hot chocolate to enjoy on our excursion.

Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

For all of our trips, you must be active in the outdoors and have an adventurous spirit. The level of experience differs slightly depending on the region you are visiting.

For most temperate and polar you should be an intermediate paddler. In South Georgia however, conditions can be more varied and you require solid paddling experience in ocean swell and wind.

For our tropical trips some prior paddling experience is needed. We may encounter wind on these trips, however the water is fairly protected.

You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll. However, you must be able to swim and you should have experience in a wet exit and assisted re-entry. You should also be proficient at putting on a spray skirt by yourself and be comfortable paddling on seas with up to half a metre swell. It is also important that you gain some practice getting into a kayak from a pier, wharf, or deep shoreline where you can’t step into the kayak from standing position. You can easily practice all of this at home, plus paddling in a variety of weather conditions, before your trip.

What about beginners up to the challenge?

Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. However, there is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart. We may be able to recommend a reputable sea kayak operator in your area for some tuition prior to the trip.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions.

You should be fit enough to paddle for up to three hours and climb between moving Zodiacs on the water. Regular exercise is recommended, because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the experience. The more paddles you can do before the trip, the better. We recommend at least three outings prior to your voyage.

Polar regions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. In South Georgia, there are stronger winds and swells than in Antarctica. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F.

Temperate regions

The northern waters are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Tropical regions

In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Again, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

The Sea Kayaking activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment. Fares for this activity start from US$900, AU$1,250, £460 or €550.

Prices are indicative only and are variable. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates.

Aerial Adventure to Mount Askja: Helicopter Ride from Modrudalur

Our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac. There are 26 places available in Antarctica and tropical voyages, 20 in temperate regions, South Georgia and all Arctic trips except in Franz Josef Land where the maximum is 16 kayakers.

Kayakers must be 14 or over.

Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.

We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.

If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.

The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.

Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in the astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.

In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.

No. Each kayaking place is for one person only. Passengers are unable to share a kayaking place as we customise the kayaks and dry suits for each individual kayaker at the beginning of each voyage.

Perlan May Soon Offer Journey “Into the Volcano”

  • Andie Sophia Fontaine
  • April 7, 2024

Perla norðursins ehf, the company that holds the lease for Reykjavík’s famed landmark Perlan, has submitted a proposal to Reykjavík City Council for a new attraction at the site: a virtual elevator ride into the depths of the Earth, to witness the interior of a volcano.

“Into the volcano”

According to the proposal, the site would be roughly 100 metres squared and just to the west of the Perlan structure. The attraction, tentatively called “Into the Volcano”, would offer guests a virtual “elevator ride” some 2,000 metres down into the Earth.

The journey itself would began at an active volcano in Reykjanes, depicting lava flow and ash near Grindavík. As passengers descend into the Earth, screens would depict what they would see if they could literally sink into a volcano unharmed. In addition, there would be a display showing how deep into the Earth the guests are descending, what the temperature is at a given depth, and other data points.

A physically present guide, or a voiceover narration, would explain to guests further what they are witnessing. The entire journey would take about seven minutes.

A trial run

The proposal states that Perlan would cover all the costs to create the exhibition and would pay the City of Reykjavík 1 million ISK per year in rent. They are asking for a three-year trial run of the attraction.
