The land of the Quandamooka People, Traditional Owners of the South-East Queenland region. 

Queensland’s wine industry is one of the State’s best keep secrets with a history dating back to the 1860’s.

The Queensland wine industry has grown considerably over the years and now approximately 1500 hectares throughout the State are under vine. The majority of this growth has occurred during the past decade with significant plantings throughout the southeast corner of the State in its best known wine growing region, the Granite Belt

The Granite Belt is only three hours drive from either Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Served by the New England Highway, this is the only place in Queensland that offers four distinct seasons. This premier wine producing area also experiences unique growing and ripening conditions, unlike elsewhere in Australia. The combination of cool weather and decomposed granite soils produces outstanding wines and a very diverse range of food. The region is home to almost 50 winery cellar doors.

Stanthorpe lies at the heart of the Granite Belt offering a range of diverse wine food experiences, boutique accommodation and access to some magnificent national parks as well as a year round calendar of events. 

A shift in the national domestic market in the early 1930s saw a decline in Queensland’s wine industry until the late 1960s when Ballandean Estate was established in what is now the State’s best known wine growing region, the Granite Belt.

Wineries in Queensland: The Ultimate Guide

Queensland wineries are underrated; they are often shadowed by other attractive characteristics like Surfers Paradise, amusement parks, national parks and old wrinkly men tanning in public. There are an array of cellar doors, winery tours and award-winning wines to check out, alongside some stunning scenery on the Granite Belt . After you have scratched your sandy itch on the famous beaches check out some of the Gold Coast wineries, Sunshine Coast wineries or cruise down the Scenic Rim with your windows down and the tunes cranking. There are even heaps of fantastic wineries in Brisbane that you’ve probably tasted but never seen.

Grab someone to deso-drive (your step mum perhaps) grab a road map ( just joking its 2020) and let’s explore the wine regions of Queensland.

Queensland, Wine and Grape Varieties

Let’s pretend you know nothing about Queensland for a second (if you do you’ll just have to give the gifted some time to catch up). Queensland is a state in the top right corner of Australia, and it covers around 1.85 million square kilometres. 

As mentioned before, the region is not commonly distinguished by its rich viticulture, but in recent years, the state has experienced accelerated growth within the wine industry. In 2001, 39 wineries were officially recorded, three years on there were 143, that’s some serious growth.

Queensland faces issues quite contrasting to the southern wine regions; the state undergoes intense heat and high rainfall each year, making fungi a severe problem, whereas the south often fights off the frosts and drought. Due to the heat, most of the vineyards lie to the south-east where temperatures aren’t as extreme.

There are only two official, recognised wine regions in Queensland but six have been specified;

South Burnett

Granite belt, darling downs.

• Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Each of these regions offers something different, and individually, they are diverse in community, history and flavour. 

The Great Dividing Range plays a lead role in the wine drama, offering mesoclimates and higher altitudes allowing for cooler temperatures. Though Queensland is limited in what grape varieties they can produce (you won’t see much Pinot noir coming out of the region), they do an excellent job in the viable ones. The top varietals include;

• Cabernet Sauvignon
• Sauvignon Blanc
• Chambourcin

The History of Wine in Queensland

Look I know history can be a little boring, learning about some old dudes that planted a crop in this paddock and that’s how Brisbane came along etc. (that’s exceptionally un-factual just so you know). But this history, the good and not so good history has moulded Australia into the great country it is today, and wine continues to show that it is a part of our culture. Yes, most Australians start drinking Golden Oak or Fruity Lexia from a silver sack (it’s making me sick just thinking about it), but that develops into an appreciation, a passion for a good drop. Wine is now a strand in Australia’s DNA, so let’s look into the humble beginnings of the Queensland wine industry.

Queensland wine industry goes back 150 years, shocking, right? Considering it has taken them 150 years to actually build an industry. But conditions weren’t as favourable as the prosperous southern regions. Go back even a few more years to 1859, and the Queen scribbled on a bit of paper stating that Queensland was its own colony dividing itself from NSW. 

Brisbane experienced rapid growth through the 1860s, but in 1864 a severe flood damaged the town and to top things off a fire that wiped out the Main Strip. (sounds a bit like 2020). True to the Australian hard-working, patriotic attitude, Brisbane bounced back. By 1867 Gold had started to appear in lots of smaller surrounding towns.

The Gold Rush was a defining chapter in the economic growth of Queensland. It was prevalent for settlers to follow the golden scent. Now Queensland wasn’t just good for growing gold; Its climate was perfect for sugarcane. If you drive past northern NSW, across the border and through Queensland, a large portion of your site seeing will be sugar cane fields. It grows like wildfire, and in the 1870s, it was booming. It was said that Polynesian farmers who came to work in the sugarcane fields introduced the magical yellow Banana fruit.

Commercially, Bananas weren’t grown until the 1880s because Sydney had a solid and loyal trade with Fiji, who supplied the booming city with a range of different exotic fruits. But as the Gold Rush started to spread thinly on the toasty pockets of the settlers, they turned to agriculture. Thus begins the rich agricultural history of QLD so apparent to this day and age.

So where does vino come in? The first vines were planted in 1960 in Roma, a small town with a population of 7000 (current day). The Town was named after The Contessa Diamantina di Roma, an Italian woman of royalty that married Sir George Bowen, the first governor of QLD.  At this time a large number of Italian migrants moved to Queensland escaping poverty or as it’s known in Italy, ‘ la miseria’. It was this Mediterranean influence on the state that founded the beginnings of viticulture in Queensland. 

Though such early foundations were established, on par with the wine-growing successors of the south, Queensland did not develop a commercial wine industry until 1968. Angelo Puglisi of Ballandean Estate (one of the fantastic Granite Belt wineries) planted a block of Shiraz and manufactured QLD’s first bottle of Vino, thus starting the revolution.

The Wine Regions of Queensland

The Granite Belt is located 3 hours south of Brisbane with the town of Stanthorpe resting at the heart of it all. The belt takes its name from the two-hundred million-year-old rock formations that reach up to 1500 meters above sea level. These altitudes provide a cooler climate for the region, making it the most abundant in Queensland and the only place to experience four seasons. The Granite Belt lies in the south-east bordering NSW. If it weren’t for the natural construction of the Great Dividing Range from which the border is crafted the Belt would be in New South Wales affecting the wine industry in QLD severely. The region is known for its productive agriculture, producing most of Queensland’s apple supply and 60% of the wine. The deep sandy soils promote thick well-rooted vines with rich minerals helping the quality of the grapes. The usual suspects dominate the grape varieties Shiraz, Cab Sauv, Chardonnay and Merlot.

Stanthorpe wineries are particularly regarded as being the best in QLD, but throughout this scenic farm country, you’re unlikely to be disappointed wherever you end up.

Though the name suggests some kinky innuendo, it actually received its title due to the eroded terior of an ancient shield volcano. The beauty of the region is unfathomable; from Tamborine Mountain in the north, to the Lost World in the south vineyards entwine their way through the fertile lands making for a perfect picturesque road trip.

Most of the wineries use cellar doors as a means to connect with the wine pioneers (wioneers) offering cream of the crop tasting tours and insight on how their wine is crafted. A lot of the cellar doors in the Scenic Rim wine region operate out of historic homesteads and old stone buildings which sets the scene and vibe. 

The region is cooled by the higher altitudes of Tamborine Mountain and the rivers that run through the area. The climate however, can be quite humid and hot making the primary focus powerful red table wines and fortified wines. Towards the cooler, fertile valleys you will find more experimental varieties like Verdelho, Vermentino and Matro.

If you’re in for something different make sure you check out the Tamborine Mountain Distillery where you’ll find a broad range of local Schnapps, Gins and Vodkas on offer. 

The Burnette Valley is the most northern official wine-growing region in Australia and the first to be given geographical indication in Queensland. The regular grape varieties you’ll commonly find throughout the region are Semillon, Shiraz, Sangiovese, Chambourcin and Verdelho (in order of quantity). 

Given the northern climatic position, the region does not by any means produce a lot of wine. The whole area churns out as much as one medium-sized winery in the Barossa Valley. 

Droughts have played a devastating role in the recent history of the South Burnett wine region. With the yield decreasing yearly, one can only assume that global warming has something to do with it. The region ranks as one of the world’s hottest viticultural areas; this shows the integral toils of the wine community in the area. Picking grapes on a 35-degree day doesn’t tickle the fancy of most.

Droughts and difficulty aside, there are 25 wineries in the region to choose from alongside some great walks and sights to see like the Bunya Mountains or Boat Mountain National Park. 

Gold Coast Hinterlands

Rainforest and countryside capture the quintessence of the Gold Coast wine region. With world-class restaurants, award-winning wineries and the Gold Coast itself just half an hour’s drive away, you couldn’t go wrong booking tickets. The region’s industry is fast-growing, and although wine isn’t the first thing that people think of when they go to the Gold Coast, it’s making its way up the popularity ladder. There are only so many times you can ride the Superman roller coaster, or avert your eyes from the leather dwellers persistent in wearing tight red budgie smugglers, without filling up a paper bag. Visiting wineries in the region is a great alternative.

Here are a few wineries you should check out whilst visiting the Gold Coast Hinterlands;

Sunshine Coast Hinterlands

The Wineries in the Sunshine Coast Hinterlands are very diverse and the region itself, similar to the Gold Coast region, is fast growing. The Blackall Ranges offer cooler climates and mesoclimates, but to the valleys in the east toward the coast, milder climates control what’s available. Here are a couple of wineries we think you should check out.

Flame Hill Vineyard – this place is awesome; firstly the architecture is innovative, the restaurant and cellar door sits proudly on the estate’s hill looking out past the vines and into the surrounding valleys. The colour palette of red and grey pop perfectly contrasting to how green and luscious the property is. The food is innovative, and the wine has an excellent balanced portfolio of reds, whites and fortifieds. There is bound to be a drink or three to your liking.

Dingo Creek

Sometimes wine can be a bit snobby and the wineries can portray pretentious, yeah… not at Dingo Creek Vineyard . These guys are so laid back and it kind of just feels like you’re having a vino with your mates. Their primary varietal focus is Cab Sauv, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauv Blanc but they also do a great Honey Mead and Muscat that we highly recommend. Dingo Creek Vineyard is a 40-minute drive from Noosa, and we think it’s 100% worth the trip.

The Darling Downs wine region is centred around the town of Toowoomba. The region is built around farming, specifically cattle. The beef that comes out of the area is highly sought after around Australia. Wine came into the picture at the end of the 19th century but didn’t really make a dent until recent years as the wine industry and tourism have started to flourish.

The small scale boutique winery isn’t as popular as it is in the more well-known regions of QLD like Granite belt and South Burnett. Darling Downs caters to higher wine production rather than flare as it has been engrained on the community’s culture to ‘farm for a living’. However a recent surge in alternative viticultural and boutique wineries is apparent and responsible for some different grape varieties popping up.

Coinciding with the great wines of the region you’ll find some breathtaking scenery as you encompass your way through the farmlands. Make sure you check out the Queen Mary Falls, the Main Range National Park or the multitude of sub-tropical rainforests that litter the area.

Visiting Queensland’s Wine Regions

Queensland’s wine country is the perfect weekend escape that offers more than just gorgeous wines. From friendly locals to beautiful national parks, Stanthorpe is authentic country life at its best!

The Granite Belt wine region boasts over 50 wineries and cellar doors. These range from small boutique wineries to larger estates – but regardless of which you visit, you’ll experience different and delightful wines.

After spending a few days exploring the area, I’ve put together this comprehensive guide with the best Stanthorpe wineries to visit. It includes my top picks as well as the best places to stay .

About Stanthorpe wineries

Located 3 hours from Brisbane and Gold Coast, the Granite Belt region is fast becoming a leading wine producer in Australia.

The town of Stanthorpe sits in the heart of the wine country.

Nestled over 900 meters above sea level, it’s regarded as one of the highest-elevated wine districts in Australia. It’s also the coldest town in Queensland, so expect cosy winters and fresh mornings.

While Queensland is rarely known for its wine, the friendly winemakers of the granite belt are quickly changing that narrative.

Summary of the best wineries in Stanthorpe

The below Stanthorpe winery map highlights the location of the wineries as well as their proximity to Girraween National Park.

While Stanthorpe is a bigger town, a higher concentration of wineries are actually located in Ballandean (toward the south).

It’s about a 20-minute drive between Stanthorpe and Ballandean.

Here are my top picks for the best wineries and places to go wine tasting in Stanthorpe. I planned my winery visits based on insider tips and recommendations from locals – and the selection could not have been better!

1. Mountview Wine: My favourite Stanthorpe winery

• Best for: Bloody Good Red
• Expect: A cosy cellar door with unique decor
• Location: Between Stanthorpe and Ballandean | Google Maps

With a crackling fireplace, quirky decor, and friendly owners, Mountview Wines gets my vote for the best winery in Stanthorpe.

It’s also one of the oldest wineries in the Granite Belt wine region and has an impressive selection of red and white varieties.

After spending the morning tasting all of their wines and chatting to the friendly owner, it was a struggle trying to decide on my favourite varietal. But I must say, their reds steal the show!

Their fastest-selling wine is the Bloody Good Red. After buying a few bottles, I can confirm that it lives up to its name! And while I’m not generally a fan of Port, their Mans Best Friend Port is also divine.

The wines at Mountview Wines are all priced under $30 a bottle, so it will be hard to leave without taking a few along with you!

2. Ravenscroft Vineyard

• Best for: Chardonnay
• Expect: Beautiful vineyard views from the cellar door
• Location: Stanthorpe | Google Maps

Ravenscroft Vineyard is a boutique Stanthorpe winery founded by award-winning winemaker Mark Ravenscroft.

Ownership of the vineyard has recently changed hands, and while Mark continues as principal winemaker, a young Aussie/British couple are the proud new owners of the estate.

They’re revamping the place and giving it a fresh look, and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.

When it comes to their wines, they’re delicious! Their Strangebird varieties include Pinotage, A South African grape, which tasted just as I remembered it. (yep, I’m South African) .

Their Chardonnay wasn’t on the tasting menu, but it’s absolutely spectacular! It’s slightly on the pricier side, but if you’re looking for a more affordable option, the Pino Grigio from Ravenscroft Wines is excellent and affordable.

The setting is equally impressive as the wines and the cellar door boasts beautiful views of the vineyards.

3. Ballandean Estate Wines

• Best for: A wide selection of cool-climate wines
• Expect: Lots of people but it’s a big place with plenty of areas for tastings
• Location: Ballandean | Google Maps

When it comes to the best Granite Belt wineries, Ballandean Estate has to be the most popular. It’s Queensland’s oldest family-owned and operated winery, and wine has been produced here since 1932.

I was expecting a big, commercial operation, but after enjoying a top-notch tasting run by the owner, I’m pleased to say that Ballandean Estate still holds an authentic charm.

The tasting fee of $10 includes 6 tastings of any varietals.

From sparkling to whites, reds and fortified wines, there’s a lot to choose from! Their Stangebird Duriff was my favourite, while the Opera Block Shiraz and Cab Sav were right up there with some of the best wines I tasted over the weekend.

Their prices range from $25 – $65 a bottle so there’s something for everyone!

4. Summit Estate Wines

• Best for: Sunset sessions
• Expect: A large cellar door and great outdoor space
• Location: North of Stanthorpe | Google Maps

Summit Estate Wines is the place to go for sunsets in Stanthorpe. With sweeping vineyard views and a magnificent sunset in the background, it’s not to be missed.

They host sunset sessions every Friday and Saturday from 4 pm where you can enjoy a picnic by the campfire. It’s a great atmosphere (and it’s dog- friendly.)

If you’ve forgotten your snacks at home, there are cheese boards on offer with plenty of yummy local produce.

I was also impressed with the quality of the wines from Summit Estate. With an extensive variety from sparkling to whites and reds, you won’t be left disappointed.

My favourite was the Wickerman Premium Shiraz and the Summit Estate Shiraz Cab Blend. Prices start at $20 per bottle and go as high as $65 for their flagship wines.

5. Symphony Hill Wines

• Best for: Wide range of varieties from sparkling, whites and reds
• Expect: A detailed wine tasting experience in a modern setting
• Location: East of Ballandean | Google Maps

Symphony Hill Wines is yet another famous winery in Stanthorpe.

I loved their wines and the overall experience made it for me. Our host, James, was one of the most passionate, friendly, and entertaining people I’ve met, and his bubbly personality was infectious.

Their wines are also superb – well, they have to be considering they’re served on Qantas Business Class flights!

With over 16 terrific varieties to choose from, Symphony Hill Wines is one of the biggest producers of wine in the region.

I really enjoyed the Gewurtztraminer – but at $65 a bottle, I opted to take home the more affordable, yet delectable Prosecco Brut instead. They also have sweet wines which start at $25 a bottle but most of their wines range between $30-$65 a bottle.

The modern cellar door might not have the views but being surrounded by wine-making machinery and barrels makes up for it!

6. Boireann Winery

• Best for: Premium red wines
• Expect: A personal tasting experience by an entertaining winemaker

If you’re looking for the best Stanthorpe wineries that specialise in red varietals, I highly recommend Boireann Winery.

This hidden gem is situated in the northern Granite Belt Region, close to the Cheese Factory, Boireann is a small vineyard that packs a punch when it comes to its wines.

But they do come at a price with their estate wines costing $75 a bottle.

But, as I said, these were the best red wines that I had all weekend. If money was no object, I would have left with cases of The Lurnea. This deep mahogany red was out of this world so be sure to give it a try!

There are also more affordable reds on offer including a cab sav and shiraz. The grapes for these wines are brought in from other farms, but the same quality and care go into the wine-making process.

Overall, the wine tasting experience at Boireann was intimate and detailed. The winemaker has an interesting story of how he ended up in Stanthorpe and I thoroughly enjoyed his charismatic, friendly personality.

7. Balancing Heart Vineyard

• Best for: Family-friendly atmosphere
• Expect: Delicious pizza and sprawling vineyard views
• Location: Close to Girraween National Park | Google Maps

Named after a granite rock formation of a balancing heart, Balancing Heart Vineyard is one of the most popular places to watch the sunset in Stanthorpe.

The gorgeous estate is located on the southern end of the Granite Belt and can easily be paired with a visit to Girraween National Park.

Balancing Heart Vineyard is one of the few wineries in Stanthorpe that offer food, so I recommend popping in for lunch or a sunset dinner. You’re not going to find better wood-fire pizzas in the region – pair this with a glass of their delicious wine and you’ll be on holiday mode in no time!

Like Summit Hills Wines, Balancing Heart Vineyard is pet-friendly and offers picturesque vineyard views.

It’s a great place to watch the sunset so I recommend ending your Stanthorpe winery tour here.

8. Twisted Gum Wines

• Best for: Sustainable wine making practices
• Expect: An intimate and detailed tasting experience

If you’re in search of a tranquil and intimate winery, Twisted Gum Wines is a perfect choice. Not only do they have a superb selection of wines, but the entire tasting experience is informative and educational.

Situated near Ballandean, their cellar door is located in a classic 1920s Queenslander with wrap-around verandahs.

You can taste any of their 6 varieties including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Black Muscat, Chardonnay, Semillon or Verdelho.

Twisted Gum Wines are also known for its sustainable winemaking practices. The grapes are pruned and picked by hand and minimal irrigation is used.

They also have a cottage available on the property – it’s the original farmhouse that sleeps up to 6 people and boasts a beautiful outdoor area.

9. Pyramid Road Wines

• Best for: Their Strangebird Petit Verdot and Mourvedre
• Expect: A boutique winery with a big cellar door filled with character

2024 Update: Pyramid Road Wines have let me know that their stocks typically run low at the beginning of the year (January- March). They will be opening again from Easter.

Only a stone’s throw away from Girraween National Park lies Pyramid Road Wines. The dynamic husband and wife team bought the estate in 1999 and have since transformed it into one of the best Stanthorpe vineyards.

The cellar door is rustic and charming and the bustling fireplace in the corner will keep you warm on those cold winter days.

With mostly reds on offer, their Mourvedre is delish, and so is their Petit Verdot. This was my first time tasing both these varietals and I was impressed!

When it comes to the pricing, Pyramid Road Wines is well-priced with most bottles costings between $30 – $50.

10. Ridgemill Estate

• Best for: Winery accommodation (View here)
• Expect: A friendly, local experience

Ridgemill Estate is home to the Granite Belt’s oldest Tempranillo and Saperavi vines. The vineyard has a picturesque and quiet setting with a relaxed vibe.

They offer grazing boards and picnic baskets which you can enjoy with your wine tasting. And to top it off, their winery accommodation is set amongst the vineyards.

11. Granite Ridge Wines

• Best for: Granite Rock Shiraz
• Expect: A beautiful shop front and small tasting area among the machinery

Granite Ridge Wines is another popular winery in Stanthorpe. The small shop front is quaint and filled with character. The tastings are done in the back amongst the wine-making machinery.

The wines are excellent (and affordable).

Granite Ridge has a variety of whites and reds as well as sweet wines and fortified options. People from our tour were raving about the sweet varieties and fortified wine, but I preferred the Granite Rock Shiraz.

It’s a hard call but Granite Ridge Wines was my least-favourite winery in Stanthorpe.

After visiting so many others, all of which were intimate and personable, I found the tasting experience here to be a bit rushed. Perhaps it’s because it was the second last stop of the day? Or maybe the other wineries were just so incredible that this one didn’t live up to the high standard the others had set.

12. Girraween Estate Wines (Closed)

• Best for: Sparkling and white varietals
• Expect: Small cellar door but unmatched tasting experience

2024 Update: The owners of Girraween Estate Wines have retired and have sadly closed their winery in Stanthorpe.

Girraween Estate Wines is another winery in Stanthorpe that offers an exceptional tasting experience.

While the cellar door may not be as big as others in the region, the husband and wife duo are totally smashing all winery goals. From growing the grapes to making the wine, bottling, and selling, they do it all!

Located on the south end of Stanthorpe, close to Girraween National Park, Girraween Estate Wines has beautiful sparkling wines that are perfect for a hot summer’s day by the pool! The owner is a passionate winemaker, and the quality of his wines demonstrates this.

My favourite was the Sparkling Special Cuvee, but the Sparkling Rose was also a hit with visitors on our tour. The Sauvignon Blac and Shiraz were equally as impressive. All of these are priced under $30, so it’s a steal if you’re looking to stock up on wine at home.

The tasting experience is authentic and set up among the wine barrels and machinery.

Not only do you get to taste 7 high-quality wines, but you get to enjoy the company of the winemaker, who has a great sense of humour and interesting stories to share.

How to plan your Stanthorpe wine tour

I highly recommend booking a wine tour which will take you to all the best Stanthorpe wineries.

I booked my tour through Granite Highlands Maxi Tours , and they were fantastic. The tour cost $120 per person and includes a mouth-watering lunch.

Filippo’s Tours also came highly recommended. If you’re looking for a private or luxury wine tour with fewer people, then Wine Discovery Tours is a great option.

Strangebird Wines from Granite Belt Wineries

The wineries near Stanthorpe are more commonly known for their Strangebird wines, which are alternative varieties.

To be classified as such, they cannot represent more than 1% of the total bearing vines in Australia.

White varietals of Strangebird include Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, and Viognier, while the reds consist of Tempranillo, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Pinotage.

If you’ve never heard of the term Strangebird , you’ll know all about it after your trip to Stanthorpe. There’s even a Strangebird Wine Trail, which will quench your desire for something new and unique.

Where to stay in Stanthorpe

While many people choose to stay in Stanthorpe, I recommend booking a place closer to Ballandean. This is a tiny town surrounded by numerous wineries and an ideal location for your visit to the Granite Belt.

Granite Gardens Cottages and Lake Retreat: Granite Gardens Cottage is located on a large property between Ballandean and Stanthorpe. The self-contained cottages are nestled on the edge of a lake and feature indoor fireplaces and large living areas. Some cottages are pet-friendly so you can bring your furry friends along with you!

R & R on The Ravine: Idyllic setting. Beautiful views. Crackling fires. R&R on the Ravine is the perfect place to escape to in the countryside. Situated south of Stanthorpe, the property boasts comfy spaces as well as a fireplace – and you’re going to love this in winter!

Granite Belt Retreat: Ideally situated next to the Granite Belt Brewery lies Granite Belt Retreat . Set on 30 acres of natural bushland, each wooden cabin is surrounded by lush greenery. It’s a great option for families yet offers a romantic retreat for couples. And yes, each cabin comes fitted with a cosy fireplace.

There’s something super intoxicating about visiting a winery (drinking copious amounts of wine in the middle of the day, might have something to do with it) and we’re not short of some BEAUTIFUL options just outside Brisbane. O’Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyards

Right on our doorstep, we’re blessed to be in the company of  O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard . The expansive property stretches along Canungra Creek; and the vineyards, cellar door, and homestead are nothing short of gorgeous. You have the option to enjoy a brekkie or lunch in the restaurant, grabbing a wood-fired pizza to enjoy overlooking the vineyards, or grabbing a gourmet picnic basket packed with the likes of fried chicken, antipasto vegetables and even ice cream, and laze about with a bottle of wine alongside the creek.

Witches Falls Winery

Another fab winery we are blessed to find in our backyard is Witches Falls Winery . Witches Falls is a must-visit on any trip to Mount Tamborine, and is conveniently located just down the road from Witches Chase Cheeses  for those picnicking purchases. Where else can you taste a flight of six locally-grown wines for just $6? Don’t forget to grab a handful of bottles from the cellar door for your next Burleigh Hill Sunday soiree, where you can discreetly brag about how cultured you are.

Flame Hill Vineyard

Sitting at the very top of Montville, Flame Hill Vineyard has it all. Great views, luscious vines, incredible nosh—and, of course, totally drinkable wine. A real highlight is their Stomp event celebrating a successful harvest at which guests are encouraged to stomp the hell out of barrels of grapes. A totally unique experience combined with great food and entertainment; there’s really no better way to spend a day!

Ocean View Estate

Nestled in the green hills of Mt Mee, Ocean View Estate is a total slice of paradise. Their award-winning wines are exclusive to the estate and will be paired up to the perfect meal with globally inspired flavours using great local produce. The views from the restaurant overlooking the vines are breathtaking, and if your other half isn't so into wine, they also do their own craft beer. If you’re looking to keep it simple, grab one of their scrumptious picnic baskets and wander among the vineyards or lakeside in the sun. And as if these guys hadn’t thought of it all already, they also boast a set of beautiful cottages… Scenery, food, drink, and accommodation? Sounds like the perfect weekend away!

Cedar Creek Estate

A favourite for weddings held against the backdrops of its vineyards and sweet sandstone chapel,  Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard and Winery  is another to add to your Mount Tamborine winery hop itinerary. There's a glow worm cave, rainforest walks, wildlife, cellar door and an onsite restaurant for a lazy lunch or high tea on the deck served with a side of gorgeous lake vistas.

Kooroomba Vineyard And Lavender Farm

Mount alford.

Did you know there’s a lavender farm, ripe for the perfect Insta shot, within driving distance of Brissie? Yep, you can swan about among rows and rows of purple, wine in hand at  Kooroomba Vineyard . The property overlooks rolling hills and mountains, with the restaurant offering 180-degree views and a rustic French-influenced menu Wednesday to Sunday, alongside the cellar door. Sounds like heaven (with the scent of lavender).

The Overflow Estate 1895

Set amongst the picturesque Scenic Rim with views that will take your breath away, The Overflow Estate 1895 looks like something straight out of an oil painting. The wines crafted here are grown on some 2500 vines, with Vermentino, Fiano, Tempranillo and Montepulciano hailing from Italy and Spain growing around the contemporary eatery and cellar door. They’re best enjoyed right there at the winery, paired with a local cheese and antipasto board on the lawn, or classic French meal in the restaurant.

Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard 

Rosé lover? You’ll want to make for this Scenic Rim winery, where a variety of rosé wines are made from grapes grown on the property. Though there is a cellar, on breezy days Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard hosts their tastings outdoors under the jacaranda trees, and you can bring along your own snacks for a picnic on the 24-hectare estate.

Hampton Estate Wines 

You’d be surprised that this sweet oasis is just over an hour's drive away from Brisbane. Hampton Estate Wines has been making award-winning drops for over 25 years, so you could say they've got some experience under their belt. Perched atop a rolling green hill, the estate is just the place to stop in for a wine or two over a long lunch in the onsite restaurant, or a game of bocce of Finska on the lawn.

Mason Wines

A nearby gem nestled in the Gold Coast hinterland is Mason Wines . Their incredible array of wines pairs up perfectly with the winery’s daily tastings of local olives, jams, chutneys, fudges and much more and, if the magnificent views overlooking the vines weren’t enough for you, Mason Wines also boast a set of beautiful cottages for a charming weekend getaway.

Where: 32 Hartley Rd, Mount Tamborine Drive time: 1 hour 10 minutes

Ballandean Estate Wines

Located in the heart of the Granite Belt, Ballandean Estate has been producing exceptional wines in this region for over 80 years. With a strong Italian heritage, the Puglisi family keep themselves pretty busy, as they are open every day for wine tastings and winery tours. Set in naturally beautiful high-altitude surrounds, the venue also boasts their Barrel Room restaurant, serving food Thursday to Monday and an events calendar that is worth keeping an eye on.

Albert River Wines

Enjoy fine wine tasting in a relaxed atmosphere after a stroll through the vines at  Albert River Wines , which has been home to three of Queensland's former premiers. Only an hour away from Brisbane, it's the perfect day trip for a quick getaway with friends or family—and you should definitely leave time for a lunch of their winery’s slow-braised lamb shank, which is best enjoyed with a glass of their red, naturally.

Sirromet Winery

If you haven’t yet made your way out to  Sirromet Winery , then you need to book in a day ASAP. A beautiful estate with endless views overlooking Moreton Bay and Stradbroke, Sirromet Winery truly offers the full experience to both wine enthusiasts and occasional drinkers alike through standard wine tastings, premium tastings, and a full winery tour. Their live entertainment sessions on the weekend are never short of epic, and there are heaps of tasty food options to choose from. Make it a fancy lunch at Restaurant Lurleen’s or enjoy the outdoor Tuscan Terrace which offers high tea or Italian-inspired meals all under $30.

Hidden Creek Winery

If you’re heading all the way out to the Granite Belt, you’ve also got to stop at this award-winning winery, which took out the Queensland Wine Awards’ 2018 Winery of the Year. If that’s not enough of an incentive, there’s also a winery pooch named Pepper. The best way to sample Hidden Creek’s wines is to grab a picnic hamper filled with nibbles (and including an entire bottle of wine) from the cafe and take it down to the water to enjoy—with or without the friendly Pepper.
