“We booked a wine tour with Tom, who picked us up from our hotel in central Wellington.
From booking the tour Tom was great at communicating.
Tom chose four amazing family run vineyards which offered an amazing selection of wines. We were able to meet the owners and wine makers at all of the vineyards which made for a much more personal tour.”
“Tom was a highly knowledgeable and all-round amazing guide. The level of guest services was exceptional, right from before the tour started, throughout and after the tour ended. Bringing us along family owned wineries, we had the privilege to converse with the owners and wine makers, making the experience extremely special. Must also express the appreciation for sustainability, providing us with water bottles made out of plant matter. The experiences shared throughout the day will definitely be a great memory and one I will be sharing with others. Highly recommend and will book again in a heartbeat. Thank you again to Tom for such an amazing experience, and also Jill for baking beautiful orange muffins to enjoy on the ride back!”
From wineries to Wellington treasures; From Maori culture to Manuka honeybee hives; From Hahei Hot Water Beach to Hobbiton and all points in between… We are sure we experienced every inch of North Island, New Zealand with Tom’s and Jill’s Kaewa Tours. Cities, villages, farms, forests, islands, breweries, historic places, gardens, waterfalls, lakes, vistas, galleries and even a secret public restroom with the art of a famous Kiwi. Tom’s sense of humor, his sense of history, his sense of timing and penchant for the perfect itinerary, made for days of fun and no glitches. Every day we ran into someone Tom knew. It was the trip of a lifetime with memories and photos to last a lifetime. Thank you, Kaewa Tours.
I had friends from Barcelona visit New Zealand and Tom very kindly made up a custom package to the Wairarapa. What a fantastic day it was. Tom is very knowledgeable with the area and has a wonderful sense of humour. We visited C’est Cheese in Featherston, lunch at Poppies winery which was certainly a highlight, two other wineries, finishing off with a delightful dinner at the Martinborough Hotel. I would have no hesitation in recommending Tom’s Kaewa tours. A first class tour.
If you really want a memorable, fun and informative guide to help you experience New Zealand – use Tom Collier! My wife and I have been on two trips with Tom, and thoroughly enjoyed his expertise, passion and…sense of humour! Tom loves New Zealand, his pride evident as he explains his country’s history, traditions and culture – as only a true Kiwi can! When these Canucks return to New Zealand (and we will) Tom will be the first Kiwi we call. The best.
If you want to cover off Martinborough for value and time look no further than booking a private tour with Tom from Kaewa Tours. He took us to the top wineries and we got to go to an olive tasting as well. He is professional, on time and knowledgeable about the area and happy to accommodate all of our requests. We will be joining him again for another tour, all and all a great day out!! Book him he is great!
Patricia and I have visited New Zealand for five weeks in February 2020 and we were lucky to be referred to Tom for a one day visit of the Martinborough vineyards and Cape Palliser. Our day trip was very well organized, included visits of four reputable vineyards, a drive down to Cape Palliser and excellent lunch and early dinner. We enjoyed very much Tom’s company, his comments about NZ, his safe driving and friendliness and we highly recommend using Tom’s services to visit New Zealand.

Mt Victoria
An easy-to-reach Lord of the Rings filming location in Wellington Central, Mt Victoria was used in The Fellowship of the Ring when the Hobbits hid from the ringwraiths just outside of The Shire.
As you hike your way up the forested hill, you’ll instantly recognise the environment like you have been transported to the scene when Frodo shouts: “Get off the road!” Specifically, this is on the first right turn on the walking track with the Lord of the Rings signpost. Further down the track on your left is a steep bank where the Hobbits discovered some mushrooms.
On the right are two trees on an overhanging ledge, where they hid from the ringwraiths. (To find the exact three trees featured is hard to find yourself without a local literally pointing them out to you). As for the tree roots that the Hobbits hid behind, these were props added to the set. With some locals’ know-how, you also might be able to find the tree where Frodo sat smoking a pipe.
Location: Wellington town belt. Take Alexandra Road and look for a parking area halfway up. A track on the left goes down into the forest. Find walking directions in Wellington – Guide for Backpackers.
Weta Cave and Workshop
Where all the magic happened, or at least, where they put the magic in The Lord of the Rings. The Weta Workshop is part of the studios where the props, costume and special effects were made for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
The Weta Cave is a free mini-museum and shop where you can buy and gaze upon the Middle-earth memorabilia made from the makers of The Lord of the Rings! There is also a short video to watch about the work they do in the Weta Workshop.
At the cave, you can sign up to do a tour of the Weta Workshop to hear some behind-the-scenes stories from The Lord of the Rings and watch props and costumes being made for new movies! Book your Weta Workshop tour on Viator or Tripadvisor .
Location : The Weta Cave and Workshop is in Miramar. From Wellington Central, take bus 2 to Miramar and simply ask the driver to tell you when to get off at the Weta Cave. Don’t worry, this happens often. Otherwise, it is located on the corner of Weka Street and Camperdown Road, for those driving.
Putangirua Pinnacles
Whether you’re a Lord of the Rings fan or not (which you are because you are reading this guide), the Putangirua Pinnacles are a must-see! These impressive weathered pillars of rock were used in the scenes for Dimholt Road where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli search for the Army of the Undead in The Return of the King.
Read Wairarapa – Guide for Backpackers for more information on the walking tracks you can take to see the Putangirua Pinnacles.
Location : From Martinborough, take State Highway 53 and turn left onto Kahutara Road and follow it all the way to the T-junction at the end. Turn right onto Lake Ferry Road, then left onto Cape Palliser Road and follow the signs from there.
The Hutt River was used to show part of the River Anduin, where The Fellowship of the Ring travelled in boats after leaving Lothlorien. The boats were launched from Poet’s Park. The other location for the River Anduin is in Queenstown in the South Island, (see 23 Lord of the Rings Locations You Can’t Miss in New Zealand ).
You can bike or walk along this section of river between the Moonshine Bridge and Poet’s Park in Upper Hutt.
Location: Upper Hutt. Drive north on State Highway 2 from Lower Hutt, past the Haywards Hill turnoff, and head north until you reach a small bridge with a sharp right turn. Poets Park is on the left.
Harcourt Park
“They’re taking the Hobbits to Isengard!” Ok, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Before it all kicked off in Isengard, Gandalf first goes to visit Saruman in Isengard in The Fellowship of the Ring to share his suspicions about the One Ring. They take a stroll in the gardens of Isengard, which was filmed in Harcourt Park, Upper Hutt. Grab a large stick in the park to use as a staff and walk like a wizard.
Location: Harcourt Park. Head north of Upper Hutt on State Highway 2 and turn left at Brown Owl into Akatarawa Road. Harcourt Park is on the left.
Kaitoke Regional Park
This is one of the few Lord of the Rings locations in New Zealand with information boards to help you find the filming locations yourself. Even then, you need to use a lot of imagination, as many of the plants in the area were taken to a greenhouse during the filming, then replanted afterwards.
You’ll notice the huge elven arch, giving you those Rivendell vibes. However, don’t get too excited because the arch was a recent installation, rather than something that was actually used on set. On the plus side, it does indicate the gateway to the filming location where the Fellowship of the Ring leaves Rivendell.
Location: Kaitoke Regional Park is a 15-minute drive north of Upper Hutt on State Highway 2.
Queen Elizabeth Park
Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast was partly used to depict Pelennor Fields in The Return of the King. This was the final battle scene in the fields surrounding Minas Tirith.
Find the other location for the Pelennor Fields in Twizel on the South Island .
Location: Head north from Wellington along State Highway 1 to McKays Crossing. At the crossing take a left towards the coast and follow the road a short distance into Queen Elizabeth Park.
Dry Creek Quarry
Not the sexiest of The Lord of the Rings locations, but Dry Creek Quarry is worth checking out for any die-hard Rings fan. Dry Creek Quarry was the set of Helm’s Deep and Minas Tirith in The Two Towers.
The quarry was transformed by the sets built for filming to depict the fortifications used in the last battle scene of The Two Towers.
Location : Dry Creek Quarry, Haywards Hill Road. Haywards Hill is a 10-minute drive from Upper Hutt or Lower Hutt. Take State Highway 2 north from Lower Hutt, or south from Upper Hutt to the entrance of State Highway 58. You can also take the train to Manor Park station.

After arrival at the Lord of the Rings 10-Day New Zealand Tour in Wellington, you’ll check-in at the tour Hotel from 14:00 to explore the city before meeting the tour leader. We recommend dining at one of Viggo’s favourite places in the Green Parrot Restaurant. The next three nights of accommodation will be in Wellington.
Day 1: Wellywood Day
Starting on day one and finishing on day nine, you will enjoy a fully-inclusive breakfast each morning before you depart for the days’ activities. Day one of the tour will start with experiencing the movie capital of New Zealand in Miramar . Visit the Windows into Workshop tour to marvel at the spectacular weapon and armour displays from the movies, purchase a souvenir and watch behind the scenes footage detailing the Weta company’s history. Experience the Wellywood location as a guided tour shows you some of the special effects used in some of the biggest movies ever. Experience the Weta Cave before heading to the Roxy Theatre for lunch on the house. The latter part of day 1 consists of visiting the filming location of the Get off the Road scene featured in The LOTR, offering stunning views of the city.
Day 2: Presentation day with Daniel Reeve
Day two of the tour won’t involve as much travelling, as we enjoy an extensive and interactive presentation from Daniel Reeve , The LOTR and The Hobbit Calligrapher and Cartographer. For those visiting during the winter months, day two will also include a presentation from an additional special movie guest. Following the performances you’ll have ample time to explore the attractions nearby such as the Te Papa Museum , watching a movie at the Special Embassy Theatre or experiencing the stunning scenery around Wellington.
Day 3: Wellington to Nelson
After finishing breakfast on day 3, we depart the North island and make our way to the South Island for the next part of the adventure. We’ll set sail from Wellington on the Inter-Island Ferry to the Southern island which takes around 3,5 hours. Lunch will be served (included with the tour), and we’ll then head for Nelson City as our next destination. While travelling to the city, you might like to stop off to see the filming location of the famous scene where the Elves travelled in barrels along the river. As an optional extra you might also like to get a closer look at this location taking a kayak down the river. The day ends with an inclusive stay at an accommodation in Nelson.
Day 4: Nelson Day
Day 4 is yours to explore at your leisure. We’d highly recommend the famous helicopter ride which showcases the LOTR sites located South of Rivendell (at an additional cost). The next step of the tour begins with heading back into Nelson City to meet the creators of the famous One Ring . While there you’ll meet Halfdan Hansen, Jens Hansen’s son to marvel at his breathtaking Hobbit and LOTR jewellery. Night four is in Nelson accommodation.
Day 5: Nelson to Christchurch
Day five will commence with an early start following breakfast to head South towards the Kaikoura Coast . While on the route you’ll stop for a second breakfast (or lunch) to witness the beautiful fur seals having fun. Day five boasts some fantastic photo opportunities, and you’ll also get to enjoy an RCT coach quiz. Finally, we depart for our next stop at Christchurch, where we spend the night before a busy day ahead.
Day 6: Edoras
With an early morning departure, we’ll embark for the filming location of Edoras , set upon a hill in a valley of the White Mountains. Making our way up to the top of the area is where we find the site of the Golden Hall, and here is where we’ll fly our Rohan Banner. Afterwards, we experience Tekapo and Pukaki, the breathtaking mountain fed-lakes before witnessing the highest mountain in New Zeland – Mt. Cook. The evening will include an inclusive dinner while enjoying a presentation from a Hobbit-inspired special guest, before settling into the Twizel accommodation.
Day 7: Pelennor Fields
Day seven kicks off with a visit to the Pelennor Fields , the location that’s known for the powerful sound of 250 horses charging after King Theoden made his battle speech. After experiencing this location, we move on to the Lake-town filming location before sitting down for lunch in Omarama. Following lunch, you might like to try your hand at archery before unwinding in your accommodation in Cromwell.
Day 8: Arrowtown, Queenstown
Venturing deeper into Middle-earth, we visit a variety of LOTR filming locations at Mavora Lakes. Purchase a picnic lunch to take along as we explore The calling up of Shadowfax, The Silverlode bridge, The Orc funeral pyre, Fangorn Forest, Nen Hithoel, The log which concealed Merry & Pippin before Frodo left the fellowship and where Sam and Frodo paddled away on the next stage of their journey. You’ll have a wealth of astonishing scenery to take in here before being transported to Queenstown in the afternoon. Accommodation will remain in Queenstown for the final three nights.
Day 9: Queenstown
Our next destination is in Arrowtown, and along the way, we take a route which follows the direction of a gold mining road, and we continue up the Arrow River. One of the highlights of Arrowtown is the filming location of where the One Ring dropped among the Gladden fields . You might like to try Bungy-jumping (at an extra cost) before heading to the Elements Restaurant for an inclusive farewell dinner.
Day 10: Optional Activities
Day ten is all about you. After enjoying breakfast, you might like to experience some optional Lord of the Rings activities. Ride the Dart river jet which heads past The Hobbiton movie set , or perhaps a helicopter flight over the Ford of Bruinen . You could enjoy a hot air balloon drive, or keep your feet on the ground with a Routeburn Track guided walk. If retail therapy is more appealing, then Queenstown shopping is the perfect treat. Your tour guide will be able to discuss all of the options available, and help with a booking should you wish.
Departure day
Waking up to the final breakfast of the tour will see your Middle-earth journey coming to an end. As you depart from Queenstown, you will require a domestic airfare to return to Auckland, followed by an international flight for your journey home from Auckland.
