Rising out of, and carved from, the native rock, Calilo is cradled by 1,000 acres of protected land and fringed by a beautiful golden sand beach, lapped by a cerulean sea.   In a remote corner of unspoilt Ios, in the heart of the Cyclades, and just a pebble’s throw from party islands Mykonos and Santorini, this 30-suite sanctuary offers an escape from the crowds. Think sun-drenched seclusion surrounded by an ancient olive-pricked landscape – nature and art at its heart.  F rom its architecture and interior design to the striking artworks and installations, Calilo – an acronym for “create a life you can fall in love with” – is the creation the Michalopoulos family whose aim is to preserve, protect and nurture this tantalizing land and to share the island’s mesmerizing magic.

Calilo features in my top 10 lists of the best beach resorts in Europe and the most stunning hotel suites I’ve ever stayed in .

Have you ever stayed at Calilo? If so, what was your experience? Leave a  comment .

PROS & THINGS I LIKE

  • In the heart of the Cyclades, between Santorini and Mykonos, lies Ios , the stunning island that Calilo calls its home. Boasting a majestic landscape, Ios is known for its whitewashed clifftop villages and 32 beautiful beaches. During the day, Ios is the absolute Cycladic paradise. When the sun goes down, the bars and restaurants of Ios’ main town Chora come alive. The fact that there is no airport on Ios explains why the island has avoided mass tourism and maintained its natural beauty. Guests can reach Ios by high-speed ferry from Santorini (45 minutes), Mykonos (2 hours), Crete (2.5 hours) and Athens (3.5 hours). Private boat transfer from Santorini or direct flights by helicopter to the resort’s private helipad can be arranged.
  • Ios has a reputation as a party island popular with young people, but the breathtakingly beautiful area in which Calilo is located is completely untouched, remote and a world apart from the lively island scene. A scenic 30-minute drive through a desolate, mountainous landscape takes guests from the ferry port near the main village Chora to the island’s little discovered southeast side. Here, Calilo enjoys a stunning location in magnificent private bay , where the calm turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea and a yellow crescent of private beach are surrounded by a natural amphitheater of spectacular rocky slopes. The entire site is part of much larger domain of protected land (1,000 acres), which is fringed by 10 km (6 mi) of coastline.
  • A resort like no other, Calilo is created by the Michalopoulous family whose is led by former Wall Street trader Angelos Michalopoulos. The Michalopoulos family doesn’t just own Calilo, they own about 30% of Ios. In order to preserve the island’s natural beauty and to protect it from the environmental degradation that usually follows mass tourism, the Michalopoulous family made a conscious decision to build on only 1% of the land they own on Ios, leaving 99% to remain as part of nature to help ensure that future generations will also be able to enjoy the wild beauty of Ios and it beaches. Besides Calilo, the family’s company called Luxurios owns a second hotel, the Agalia Luxury Suites, and several bars, restaurants and beach clubs on the island.
  • Every design element at Calilo is created by its owner Angelos Michalopoulos and aimed at stirring emotions among its guests. The result is an aesthetically unique and fairy tale-esque decor that represents a modern, colorful take on traditional Cycladic architecture and the hippy culture that once dominated Ios. The decor is at its most surreal in the lobby, which it accessed via a curving walkway lined by art works and waterfalls. Skylight beaming through pebble holes in the ceiling above disperses as dozens of hearts on a water pond beneath. Decorated with hand-painted army boots, inspirational aphorisms, and wooden swings dressed in flowers, the lobby feels more like an art gallery in London or New York than a hotel in the Greek islands.
  • Calilo features 32 uniquely designed suites , all featuring hand-crafted mosaics, scalloped tiles, driftwood-inspired chairs and waves of marble (most suites also have private pools). During my holiday, I was upgraded to the “Sea of Smiles Suite.” Located on the hill side of Calilo with panoramic views of the resort and beach, this incredible suite was named by Michalopoulos for its focus on water. The signature suite offered three bedrooms, each with palatial en-suite marble bathrooms with deep soaking bathtubs. The suite’s generous outdoor space included a dedicated sitting area, waterfall, natural rock shower, water pond and two swinging beds. To top it all, there was a private swimming pool made from 65,000 pieces of marble.
  • Although most guests prefer to relax by their private pool or on the beach during the day, Calilo also boasts an enormous lagoon-shaped swimming pool for those in need of some more water fun. Surrounded by loungers and a shaded veranda, the 50 m (164 ft) pool is located between Calilo’s main pavilion and the resort’s pristine private beachfront. In line with the hotel’s surreal and Gaudi-alike design theme, the pool features several decorative elements, such as colorful swings hanging over the water, sunken dining areas within the pool, and exuberant modernist sculptures of bodies being flung through the air.
  • Calilo sits on its own private beach, called Papas Beach. Probably the most beautiful beach in Ios , if not Greece, Papas is an idyllic cove, composed of yellow coarse-sand and crystal clear waters, and surrounded by dramatic sandstone cliffs. Several thatched cabanas with thick mattresses and wind-screens are located on the beach and can be used free of charge by guests of the hotel. The beach cove is also home to a jetty, where the resort’s private speed boats dock. Guests wishing to explore the majestic, natural beauty and beaches of Ios can rent one of these private boats and embark on thrilling excursions to hidden coves and secluded beaches reachable only by boat, as well as day trips to any of the nearby Cycladic islands.
  • Located in a secluded area overlooking the sea are three separate venues – called rock pools – built into the natural stone landscape offering an alternative beach experience. Two of the venues, called the Dreamers Heart Rock Pools, take the shape of their namesake with distinct heart-shaped swimming pools, while the third is a round shape. Complete with private bathrooms and kitchen, each rock pool features a sitting area with dining table, dedicated butler for catering and bottle service, access to massage treatments, and various lounge options from swinging double beds to Calilo’s signature swings. Ideal for special events, the rock pools can be booked for marriage proposals, bachelor/ette parties and other milestone moments.
  • Currently, Calilo has one restaurant, where serves delicious food all day (although guests can also have their meals at the rock pool, on the beach or in their room). Located between the lobby and the pool area, the open-sided restaurant is styled in the resort’s signature Gaudi-esque decor and features several hidden nooks & corners (e.g. sunken dining areas within the pool). In the morning, the venue offers a breakfast buffet while during lunchtime and in the evening (until midnight), a la carte dining is offered with a wide variety of Western and Greek dishes. Calilo’s food philosophy is rooted in the Ancient Greeks’ belief that a healthy body supports a healthy mind and the resort’s kitchen strongly advocates the benefits of a Mediterranean diet.
  • The Michalopoulous family and their Calilo project have sustainability in their DNA. Following the principles of environmentally-friendly design, the resort is being built in close collaboration with the local community, thus providing direct economic benefits through responsible tourism development. All the materials used during Calilo’s construction – except for wood, iron, glass and cement – are extracted from the ground of the actual building site (e.g. marble, stone, granite). They are then cut and carved by local craftsmen who lay by hand and construct each one of the hotel’s venues (some of them requiring millions of the crafted stones), employing painstaking but authentic and traditional building techniques.
  • One of the hotel’s conservation project is the plantation of more than 70,000 trees and bushes around Ios island to restore the habitat that had previously been burned repeatedly by wild fires and land deforestation. In addition, some 550 ancient olive trees (most of them more than 300-years-old) which were about to be cut and sold for firewood in Athens, were transported from the mainland, by boat, to Calilo and other sites in Ios. They were destined to become firewood and instead have been given a second life at the resort. Here, with the help of specialists, 97% of them have survived and are now thriving in their new locations.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

Calilo is one of the most unique and impressive resorts I’ve ever stayed at. The resort and the hotel concept is still a work in progress though, with room for improvement. It has the potential to become the best beach resort in Europe, one that could even be on the same level as a Soneva, but it is not there yet. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Food at the resort is excellent, but there’s only one restaurant. Although the menu is extensive, one might get a little bit bored food-wise after a few days. Also, the food is delicious but it is not fine dining as it lacks some sophistication, both in taste and presentation. From what I heard, the owners will launch some new dining concepts for the next season, so that would be a welcome addition to the resort. I recommend they also consider hiring a top chef to transform Calilo into a foodie paradise (because that is what most of their potential clientele is used to and will expect).
  • Breakfast at Calilo is a bit disappointing for a resort of this caliber. Although the buffet is nicely presented, it offers a rather small selection of items which pales in comparison to the lavish buffets often seen at other 5-star hotels in Greece and beyond. In addition, service at breakfast is slow: due to COVID, one staff member is present at the buffet to serve all guests (as guests cannot touch anything themselves), often resulting in some waiting time. Finally, besides the buffet, one could order only one egg dish and one type of coffee during breakfast; other egg dishes or coffees were charged for. I advise the owners to upgrade the breakfast experience to a sumptuous buffet displayed in a cold room (with an additional a la carte menu for hot dishes).
  • Calilo is expanding its room inventory upon the hills around the resort. If you’re booked into one of the newer, extravagant suites up the hill, expect to do a lot of walking up and down the hill . Alternatively, one can always contact the lobby after which a car is send to pick you up or drop you off. Perhaps it would be a nice idea to provide guests of these suites with a golf buggy for the duration of their stay, so they have more flexibility getting around the resort.
  • Calilo is a deeply personal project of owner Angelos Michalopoulost, who has designed every part of the hotel himself. The result is a unique and visually overwhelming decor that is all about love and imagination. While some guests will love the quircky design (count me in!), it might not fit the taste of others, although one thing is for sure: it will leave an impression that you will not easily forget.
  • At the moment, wellness facilities at the resort are limited as there’s just one spa room . However, the resort is currently building an extensive spa facility which will open next year.
  • The resort is tucked away in what seems like the  middle of nowhere , but that is what makes it so unique – secluded, private, quiet and serene with its own amazing beach and exclusive facilities. Although the isolated location is part of the appeal for most guests, it’s important to emphasize that the resort is removed from almost everything, so you won’t find any restaurants, shops or nightlife within a half hour drive of the resort.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Ios are the autumn months of September and October: the weather is still great, the tourist crowds have left, the sea temperature is at its warmest, and the hotel rates are within reasonable range. The spring months of April and May, before the summer rush comes, are also a great time to visit, although the sea is cold and you may encounter some cloudy days. Summer is also a great time to visit the resort but it can get windy in the Calilo’s private bay, with the Meltemi blowing for long periods, especially in the afternoons (sometimes gale force like winds).

HOW TO GET THERE

Guests can reach Ios by high-speed ferry from Santorini (45 minutes), Mykonos (2 hours), Crete (2.5 hours) and Athens (3.5 hours). From the ferry port, it’s another 30 minutes by hotel car to the resort. Private boat transfer from Santorini or direct flights by helicopter to the resort’s private helipad can be arranged as well.

Fair enough, thanks for sharing so I can compare my impressions 👍

So beautiful! We have booked and will be there in 2 weeks 🙂

Calilo has been built in the “Raches Pappas” area of Ios. In the part of the area near the sea there was a protected wetland, which was fed by streams coming from the surrounding mountain slopes. This wetland has now been destroyed, and streams that fed it have been filled. The wetland and streams area has been converted into a hotel.

Inside Calilo: Greece’s Unforgettable Luxury Hotel Experience

From its luxury accommodation to world-class views, Calilo provides unforgettable treatment that turns your vacation into a fairy tale.

Jasmine Osby • Dec 13, 2023

best time to visit calilo greece

Greece has blossomed over the last few decades as a major tourism and travel destination. Many travelers and travel agents typically choose to book stays on the islands of Mykonos and Santorini. However, the Calilo resort on Ios is where the real luxury lies.

Unlike some of the resorts, Calilo isn’t overrun with tourists. Instead, the 1,000-acre resort carved from the rock provides a tranquil, blissful experience unlike any other. From its luxury accommodation to world-class views, Calilo provides an unforgettable treatment that turns vacation into a fairy tale .

Unforgettable Luxury

Calilo

From the moment you arrive, it’s clear Calilo is unlike any other resort. It was designed that way. The name is short for “create a life you can fall in love with.” Remnants of positivity, happiness, and glee are embedded throughout the property’s architectural design. Owners and creators Angelos Michalopoulos and his wife Vassiliki Petridou ensured the main themes of the resort – light, art, and water were on full display.

The accommodations at Calilo are stellar are even big enough for multi-traveler stays. Guests can find privacy in their suites as well as an array of luxury amenities. There are a few different room styles to choose from. Travelers can expect a little bit of everything depending on their suites. They have swing beds overlooking the sea, hilltop pool suites with panoramic views, and wooden walkways taking guests through the water-based property.

When Michalopoulos and Petridou began developing the land on Ios, they wanted to ensure it wasn’t overrun with hotel properties. The couple told Forbes they wanted to stay true to the natural beauty of the island. Although there are plans to develop more of the surrounding area, only 1 percent is for hotels.

“Most islands become victims of their own success, which is something we want to avoid with this island with the conservation of the land,” Michalopoulos told Forbes.

A Grecian Adventure By The Sea

Calilo

Calilo was created to allow visitors to experience authentic Grecian relaxation. Of course, travelers can always head to nearby islands for parties and cultural excursions. But for luxury tranquility, Calilo tops the charts in Greece.

With water being a major theme of the resort, the location of Calilo adds to its allure. The five-star resort overlooks the Bay of Papas. Many of its suites open up to magnificent views of the surrounding cerulean sea and guests enjoy direct access to the beach.

Guests also can tap into the many wellness amenities offered at Calilo. There’s a variety of in-room spa treatments, beachfront yoga classes, and other amenities aimed toward helping guests reach peak relaxation. The resort also focuses on sustainability, growing many of the herbs and produce served in its restaurant on the property.

The island of Ios may not always be at the top of the list when it comes to destinations to visit in Greece . However, Calilo is the ultimate luxury dream for travelers who want to escape the busy tourist streets and create their own vacation adventure.

Ios is the underrated Greek island you need to add to your travel hitlist

best time to visit calilo greece

By Luca Wetherby-Matthews

Ios island is the underrated Greek hotspot you need to add to your travel hitlist

Few times in life do you find yourself genuinely rendered speechless – in a good way. You know, that open-mouthed, total sense of awe. But Calilo, a 30-suite resort on the Greek island of Ios, is unlike any hotel I've ever come across before.

You may have seen Calilo on your Instagram feed, in videos of gorgeous holiday-makers looking out at sunsets from rose petal-topped infinity pools. Opened in 2019, Calilo is truly the ' Instagram ' destination. Situated on over 1,000 acres on the beautiful island of Ios, it's hard to believe a place like this even exists. Incredible architecture, a landscape to die for, beaches so golden, and pools so vast that even Michael Phelps would have trouble swimming from one side to the other – Calilo promises a lot, and it delivers more.

Upon arrival, I was told that the word "Calilo" means "Create A Life they can fall in Love with." For my three-night stay at this incredible resort, I was determined to put that mantra to the test.

Ios island is the underrated Greek hotspot you need to add to your travel hitlist

What’s Ios like?

Ios is a smaller island, as part of the Cyclades group, meaning you have to get a flight to Santorini or Mykonos , followed by a ferry to the island. Unless, of course, you have access to a helicopter, in which case you can fly in directly to the Calilo’s helipad. Alas we did not. And with our flight unfortunately delayed by two hours, we missed our ferry so had to spend the following five hours in Santorini’s port waiting for the next one . A far stretch from the glamorous beach clubs and luxury hotels the island is famous for, Santorini’s port put a bit of a dampener on our vibes. So, with a so-bad-you-have-to-laugh journey behind us, we were hoping for a miracle when we reached Ios. As we stepped off the ferry, we were greeted by a sea of glimmering lights, giving a warm glow from the restaurants that adorned the port.

In the nighttime, Ios island glistened and glowed as we drove through the island to Calilo, which sits on the southeast coast. In the daytime, Ios is (naturally) even more beautiful. The capital, Chora, feels like a buzzing hub of energy and life, set against a backdrop of vast, sprawling hills across the island. With a big nightlife scene, aesthetic bars , traditional restaurants and small boutique shops, visiting Chora feels like an authentic glimpse into all the best things that Greece has to offer. That’s if you can bring yourself to leave the hotel…

What’s the vibe like at Calilo hotel?

Love is the central theme at the heart of everything Calilo has to offer, it’s woven into its DNA. As you walk around the hotel, speak to the staff and eat and drink, the idea of love, passion and creativity is all-encompassing. When you first enter the hotel, you walk over a wooden bridge across pools of water, surrounded by colourful art . Structures of figures supporting each other, dancing, and moving can be spotted across the hotel, hinting at the playfulness that thrives within Calilo. Everywhere you look there are hand-attached mosaic tiles, creating butterflies, plants and words of affirmation across the floors, walls and ceilings. There’s attention to detail, and then there’s Calilo.

The experience at this hotel is nothing short of pure luxury. The staff are extremely attentive, looped in on all your plans and asking questions about your stay as though they have your itinerary memorised by heart. Nothing is too small or too big of an ask here, and there’s a genuine feeling that the staff deeply care about your stay - something which can often feel insincere.

This all stems from the founder of the Calilo group, Angelos Michalopoulos. We heard his name throughout our trip, like a mysterious, all-seeing, all-knowing figure. There’s a spirituality that comes with Angelos’ ethos that could feel a little cult-y, if it didn’t make the whole experience feel that much more unique. Each night on the turn-down service, the staff leave one of Angelo’s poetry books open on a random page, leaving a message for you to receive. My personal favourite was, “Love is already too happy to need victory.” A gentle reminder *not* to argue with my boyfriend on holiday. Message received.

What type of room should I book?

We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite, which left my boyfriend and I at a loss for words upon our arrival. From the private infinity pool overlooking the sea to the enormous bath set into the marble floor, the Honeymoon Suite exudes luxury, thoughtful design and pure opulence. It almost felt like too much at some points. How could we possibly enjoy this sprawling room - which was bigger than our apartment back home - when there was so much else to see? I’d like to think we gave it a good go, anyway.

The aforementioned turn-down service also included the drawing of the automatic blinds, which had photos of the Aegen sea and landscape around Calilo printed on them. There’s an overwhelming feeling that the hotel and its staff take great pride in the island, and giving back to it. Over 60,000 plants were planted by Angelos and his team in the barren Cyclades landscape, helping the island to grow and thrive long after the legacy of Calilo is gone.

Whichever room you end up booking, from the extravagant three-bedroom suites equipped with gyms and cinemas to the low-key garden view suites, you’ll have a truly unique experience. But I’d highly recommend getting one with an undisturbed view of the sea for that extra bit of magic.

Ios island is the underrated Greek hotspot you need to add to your travel hitlist

What’s a must-visit at the hotel?

You cannot leave Calilo without visiting their brand new wellness centre. Seriously. It’s got a state-of-the-art gym (which, while impressive, is not what I holiday for - sorry), a meditation area, a swimming pool and treatment rooms. To be honest, ‘treatment room’ doesn’t do a sliver of justice to what the space is really like. We were booked in for a couples massage on our second day and found ourselves speechless for a second time this holiday when the massage therapist opened the door to the room. The two massage beds sat on a wooden platform, above a floor of water. From the corner of the room, a blue tree grew sprawling branches overhead, with bright pink Bougainvillea flowers hanging off them. Small hearts were cut out in the ceiling, letting glimmers of light into the space. Immediately, I felt any and all stress levitate out of my body, further improved by the seriously good massage that followed. It’s a truly beautiful slice of heaven in Ios.

From facials using local olive oils, to more intensive cryolysis treatments, there’s something for everyone to try. I’d highly recommend the couples massage if you want to try something a little different to set the romantic tone on your holiday.

What food should I try?

I’m a sucker for Greek food, so it goes without saying that you should try the traditional Greek food at the hotel. Even if it’s at the breakfast buffet, where spreads of Greek pastries and cakes are laid out alongside fresh fruits and cured meats.

If you don’t fancy Greek, you can head to Pathos, a sprawling lounge bar on the other side of Ios which looks out with an uninterrupted view over the sea, making it one of the best settings for a sunset dinner on the whole island. We picked out a few sushi dishes from the Japanese-inspired menu (the yellowtail was my favourite) and sipped on cocktails while watching the sun go down (sadly behind the clouds). It’s hard to think of many better ways to spend an evening than that.

The standout though, has to be the tasting menu at CHES restaurant, a restaurant which serves only a tasting menu, just a short buggy drive up on the grounds of the hotel. The tasting menu draws inspiration from the Greek islands, taking a signature ingredient or dish and reinterpreting it into the present. You can taste the history of Greece in each bite, providing a truly unique experience to learn more about the islands, from the local Greek staff. And, if you really want to amp up the experience, you can choose the wine pairing menu, and sample some of the best wines Greece has to offer. The A-Muse rosé wine has been living in my head rent-free ever since I tasted it.

11 things I wish I knew before visiting Greece

Anthony Grant

As the travel industry reopens following COVID-19 shutdowns, TPG suggests that you talk to your doctor, follow health officials' guidance and research local travel restrictions before booking that next trip. We will be here to help you prepare, whether it is next month or next year.

When it comes to deciding where to go next, Greece is a usually a slam dunk. Whether it's a beachy island getaway you're after or an Athens (or perhaps Thessaloniki) city break that blends sightseeing by day with ouzo gulping by night, the mythic Mediterranean country ticks all the right boxes for classic holidays but wait -- there's more. Lots more.

Landing in Athens is the easy bit, but once you're on terra firma you'll find yourself immersed in both an epic history and some rather iconic landscapes, too. How you navigate this richness is largely up to you, but the more you know before you go, the more capably you can decode all those big fat Greek travel mysteries. Keep the following things in mind to help you steer clear of the cliches and make the most out of your experiences in Greece.

1. Don't just make the Acropolis in Athens your priority

Making the Acropolis the focus of a jaunt to Athens is like making a trip to Paris about visiting the Eiffel Tower -- so don't do it. Instead, do like the Athenians do and drink in views of the sacred rock from any number of rooftop bars and restaurants in the vicinity, or better yet wake up to a view of it from your hotel room . And the best views of Athens as a whole are actually from the top of Mount Lycavittos anyway (take the funicular in the Kolonaki neighborhood to the top).

Dodge the tourist crowds marching up to the Parthenon and instead inspect the arguably more evocative ruins at the foot of the Acropolis in the ancient agora area. I'd also suggest skipping the Acropolis Museum and diverting your cultural hours to the National Archaeological Museum across town. It's a bit fusty but still the best museum in Greece. Essential smaller museums include the Benaki Museum and Museum of Cycladic Art, both of which blend ancient artifacts with excellent contemporary exhibitions. If you fancy a Picasso or Van Gogh fix, the brand-new Goulandris museum is a must.

2. Don't just feast on gyro

I've seen this over and over (and over) again: tourists who enjoy a hearty international-style buffet breakfast at their hotel and then opt for a gyro or souvlaki platter for lunch and then again for dinner. Don't get me wrong, authentic Greek gyros are pretty scrumptious and at about three euros each are fiscally attractive dining options too. But Greek gastronomy is more diverse than that and experiencing at least some of it can be a highlight of your trip.

To savor a Greek breakfast staple you'll almost never find at a hotel buffet, try strapatsada, a delectable dish made with eggs (usually scrambled), feta cheese, fresh tomato sauce and a dash of olive oil. One of the best is served at the restaurant of the Acropolis Museum (you don't have to pay for museum admission to eat at the restaurant). For the best seafood, shun the touristy tavernas around the Plaka and head instead to Piraeus, where the seafood is generally cheaper, fresher and comes with sea views, too. Vegan restaurants are also taking off, particularly in Athens.

best time to visit calilo greece

3. Find your nearest laiki

The spirit of ancient Greece lives on in the weekly laiki, or outdoor fruit and vegetable market that takes place rain or shine throughout the year on Fridays. A visit to a laiki is a great way to get an eyeful and taste of nature's bounty for which Greece is justly famous for. Every neighborhood in Athens has its own laiki and some are bigger and better than others. One of the best is in Pagrati, on Archimidous Street right behind the Panathenaic Stadium (the world's only stadium built entirely of marble). Besides organic produce you'll find plenty of traditional comestibles like extra-virgin olive oil, halva and honey for sale.

4. Greece isn't just for the summer months

One of the greatest Greek myths is that the many islands are strictly for summertime escapes, but that's far from the case. True, many islands rock their Greek summer vibes best in the peak months of July and August (the months that also pull the most crowds), but swimming season heats up as early as May and in many places doesn't wind down until November. Little islands near Athens like Hydra and Spetses are worth visiting even in winter and big islands like Crete have plenty of cultural attractions and historic sites to keep you busy throughout the year.

best time to visit calilo greece

5. Don't take a three-island day cruise

When you are in the Piraeus port you'll see many advertisements for three-island cruises that promise you a mini-odyssey to a trio of islands close to Athens. Generally these are Aegina, Hydra and Poros. Focus on one island instead. Packing three islands into a single day trip is something that Greeks themselves would never do, it diminishes both the quantity and quality of your time. If you are really into ancient ruins, spend time on Aegina. For dramatic scenery, Hydra's the spot. Among all the islands within an easy ferry journey from Athens/Piraeus, Poros easily qualifies as the quiet charmer where you could linger for hours over Greek coffees and delightful harbor views.

6. Greek islands aren't just for hitting the beach

Greece has some 6,000 islands, of which about 227 are inhabited. That represents a lot of geographical diversity. Some islands have gorgeous beaches -- think Mykonos, Kefalonia and Corfu -- while others have a mix of decent beaches and landscapes that offer up the possibility of more varied activities. Kalymnos is the place for rock climbing and bouldering, Paros is ideal for windsurfing and kite surfing, Sifnos and Tinos (and to a certain extent Santorini) are much favored by foodies and so forth. The shoulder season, April to June and also October, is often ideal for these beyond-the-beach pursuits.

7.  Skipping Santorini is not a sin

Two essential Santorini travel facts: the first is that yes, it's a geologically unique island and the second is that yes, you should probably also skip it. How dare I? Well, due to far too many cruise ships disgorging way too many people onto such a small place, the wisp of an island has degenerated into a sort of hyper-sanitized Selfie Island and really, how much fun is that? The views over the volcanic caldera are cool as are the Minoan ruins at Akrotiri but the beaches aren't great and the good hotels and restaurants tend to be overpriced.

So check it out if you must but make sure you avoid the months of June, July, August and now all of September too. Other Aegean islands beckon with their own brand of gorgeousness, whether that be breezy Andros, volcanic Milos and myriad others.

8. You should visit Greece during Easter

Greeks celebrate Easter with a fervor most Europeans reserve for Christmas -- and the enthusiasm has a distinctly noncommercial flavor at that. The Greek Orthodox Church still holds sway over many aspects of contemporary Greek life and Easter week is when some of the more celebratory aspects really kick in, with all manner of feasts and public processions that begin on Palm Sunday and vary from location to location but that are particularly colorful on islands like Corfu.

9. Think of Crete as a separate country

Because in many respects it is. Starting with size: Crete is 160 miles from one end to the other and is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. That means it's difficult to see it all in a single take, nor should you try. The landscapes are stunningly varied and unlike the more stereotypical Greek island getaways the Cretan economy is not wholly dependent on tourism: historic cities like Heraklion and Chania also have a youthful vibrancy that's hard to resist.

There are numerous nonstop flights from Crete's two major airports in Heraklion and Chania in the peak summer season and year-round connections from Athens. From Athens/Piraeus there are also daily ferry departures, they typically leave around 9 p.m. and arrive in Crete at 6 a.m. While these ferries resemble small cruise ships with plenty of seating options (including cabins), a flight on Aegean will you get from Athens to Crete in just about an hour.

10. Remember the mainland

Greece is more than Athens and the islands. The region of which Athens is a part, Attica, is home to some of the most important sites in antiquity from Marathon to Cape Sounio and the Temple of Poseidon. South and east of the Greek capital, the Peloponnese offers a dramatically chiseled coastline and plenty of historical gems too, like the city of Nafplion -- the first capital of Greece -- and the remarkable fortress isle of Monemvasia. The northern city of Thessaloniki, named after Alexander the Great's half-sister, is worth a detour for its history, museums and excellent restaurants.

11. You needn't spend a fortune to have a blast in Mykonos

Stick around Greece for any length of time and you're bound to hear Greeks bemoan how Mykonos has become an enclave affordable only for the likes of Arab princes and their consorts (who may or may not include Lindsay Lohan). While there is some truth to that, don't let it put you off a visit because the cosmopolitan Mykonos vibe is something you won't find anywhere else. The small Cycladic island has some of the best beaches, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs in the Mediterranean. July and August are the months to avoid, but if you can manage to hit Mykonos in June or September, you'll probably have a great time and without necessarily breaking the bank.

best time to visit calilo greece

Bottom line

Greece is a country with attractions that are so iconic everybody thinks they already know the place and to varying degrees maybe they do, but not unlike Madonna, there is a lot more to her than meets the eye. It's when you avoid insisting on the cliches -- you probably don't need a whole day to snap selfies at the Acropolis or an overpriced seafood lunch in the touristy center of Mykonos town -- that the colors of Greece really begin to reveal themselves. And if you can avoid those peak crowded months of July (especially the second half) and August you'll very likely have a better holiday experience in Greece overall.

The Best Time to Visit Greece, According to a Local

T hink of a Mediterranean vacation, and Greece is sure to make your list of must-visit destinations. Its blend of seaside escapes, history, culture and mouthwatering cuisine make it one of the best places to travel for all types of tourists. And let's not forget its islands! They're prime honeymoon hot spots, consistently serving up some of the most romantic getaways . I can fully appreciate the draw—I loved it so much that I moved here, after all. And I'll tell you this: It pays to know the best time to visit Greece before booking your trip.

Greek vacations are more popular than ever. In fact, a recent report from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, found that Greece was one of only six member countries to receive more flights in September 2023 than it did in September 2019. In other words, Greece is bouncing back to pre-COVID-19 levels. And that means you'll have to contend with other tourists if you take a trip here.

As a local who's lived in and written about this eclectic country for more than a decade, I know from experience that it's impossible to avoid tourists entirely. It's all about timing. Whether you want to beat the crowds, bask in the best weather imaginable or travel on the cheap , here's the best time to visit Greece for the ultimate European vacation.

What is the best time of year to visit Greece?

It's hard to pinpoint a single best time to visit Greece, and that's because it all depends on your priorities and how you weigh crowdedness, cost and climate. To spend the least amount of money, you may need to visit when temps are on the cooler side. For peak sunbathing weather, you'll shell out more cash and contend with greater crowds.

If you want to avoid a Greece overrun by tourists, skip the summer months. In June, July and August, beaches are typically crowded, though it's possible to find hidden coves even during this peak season—especially if you take a small boat tour from or around some of the islands or the Athens coastline.

No matter when you land on Greek soil, you'll have to deal with some tourists. According to Bank of Greece data, 5.76 million international travelers visited the country in the first five months of 2023, proof of Greece's ever-growing popularity. Still, there are quieter times to explore the country, such as during the shoulder-season months of September and October, early November and late March through May. Whether you're discovering ancient ruins, exploring mainland destinations or bopping around little-known islands, you'll find fewer crowds, mild temps and cheaper-than-high-season prices.

For me, the best time to visit Greece is from September until the end of October. The weather on a lot of the southern islands, such as Rhodes and Crete, is still warm enough to swim, with average daytime temperatures of 75 and 73 degrees respectively. Plus, the crowds are gone, as children have headed back to school.

Springtime is also a great option, and I recommend timing your visit so you can experience Greek Orthodox Easter. It usually falls in April or May (in 2024, it occurs on May 5), and it's the most important holiday on the Greek calendar—more so than Christmas even. Expect to eat plenty of delicious lamb and join in neighborhood celebrations and street processions to the local church.

What time of year is the cheapest to visit Greece?

While a Greek getaway isn't necessarily cheap, there are ways to save money when traveling to the country. For starters, avoid the high-season summer months of June, July and August. The winter off-season sees prices drop considerably, and this tends to be the best time to find hotel deals. On Tripadvisor, for instance, the same Athens hotel costs about $52 more in April than in January—and though summer rates aren't available yet, it's safe to bet that the price will rise in June, July and August.

Traveling during the winter will serve you well when booking your flight too. The cheapest airfare from the United States tends to occur during the winter months. When I searched Expedia for flights for a two-week vacation, I found a round-trip ticket from Newark, New Jersey, to Athens in early December going for $473. A round-trip ticket from Newark to Athens in June comes in at $992.

When is the weather the best in Greece?

Best weather is subjective, depending on where you're traveling from and if you like your vacation to be hot. Without a doubt, the summer of 2023 set records. As the Guardian reported, the country had the hottest July in 50 years, with temperatures in Athens repeatedly exceeding 104 degrees. So if you're here for the Mediterranean island sunbathing, you'll need to account for these levels of heat (and maybe plan some indoor activities, just in case).

As a local, I think the best time to travel to Greece for great weather is September, when daytime temperatures are a balmy 82 degrees and sea temperatures 77 degrees, making swimming still possible. The fall months of October and early November average 64 to 72 degrees, so it's pleasant to sit outside at a cafe, sipping the staple drink of a Greek frappe (cold coffee milkshake).

December through February are the country's coldest months, with daytime temperatures averaging 54 to 57 degrees. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, winters can be mild—but they're also wet. You may even see snow on the mainland in the mountainous areas to the north and on some of the islands, such as Crete. It creates good skiing opportunities, and while they can't compete with some of the world's more famous ski resorts, there are a handful of ski resorts in the country that locals (and in-the-know tourists) use yearly.

When packing your suitcase , think layers for all seasons. And be prepared for high humidity, which makes it feel sticky in the summer and chilly in the winter.

What is the best time of year to go to Athens?

The best time to visit Greece if you're planning to stop in the capital city is during the fall or spring shoulder seasons. In April, May, September and October, daytime and nighttime temperatures aren't uncomfortably hot or too cold. The spring and fall months offer plenty of opportunity to wander the Athenian streets, discovering the small neighborhoods. Plus, the cooler weather makes climbing up to the Acropolis a much more pleasurable experience.

It's also worth mentioning that crowds in the shoulder season and off-season are considerably smaller, so lines to enter the Acropolis are shorter. In fact, the wait to view this ancient monument gets so long in the summer that Greece had to set a cap of 20,000 visitors daily to shorten lines during the dangerous heat. By visiting in the off-season, you won't be waiting in line in the sweltering heat, and there won't be a mad rush to buy a ticket before the cap is reached.

If you're looking for even more things to do in Greece , visit on Ohi Day. The national holiday occurs on Oct. 28 and commemorates the day in 1940 when Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas rejected Mussolini's ultimatum to have free passage through Greece for his Italian troops. You'll find street parades all over the country on this holiday, but the one in central Athens is particularly impressive, with its added military parade and marching band.

What is the best time to visit Santorini and the other Greek islands?

Greece is famous for its islands, especially Santorini, with its blue-domed churches and sugar cube houses, so atypical for the Cycladic island chain it's located within, and Mykonos, with its cosmopolitan atmosphere, cobbled alleyways and hidden coves. They tend to attract visitors during the summer months, but that may not be the ideal time to vacation here.

If you're looking for a beach vacation away from the crowds, my advice would be to book a trip for September. It'll still be warm enough to swim and get a nice tan, but you won't have to deal with a ton of tourists.

Don't rule out wintertime for your trip to the Greek islands. Admittedly, much shuts down in the off season, but you'll get to experience the real Greece, have frequent sunny days and still find places to eat traditional Greek food, such as souvlaki (the locals need to eat too!). The lack of crowds allows you to roam the islands at your own pace.

Besides, temps aren't too bad even in the winter. Santorini's caldera entices with morning mists floating over its surface. And with average winter temperatures of 55 degrees, it's not too chilly.

There are several flights from mainland Greece to the islands that are cheaper during the spring and fall, but my favorite way to travel is by ferry. The lack of competition on ferry routes means this method of transportation isn't cheap at any time of the year, but Greek ferries resemble mini cruise ships and offer lovely cabins on longer routes. Make it a part of the whole experience: Take a weekend break in Athens followed by a journey by ferry to the islands. Note that ferries have a reduced schedule in the spring and fall months, with more connections in the summer.

How many days in Greece is enough?

Just as you would when planning a trip to destinations like London and Hawaii , start by considering where you'll be flying out of. The ideal number of days to spend in Greece depends on where you're traveling from. If you're flying from the United States, you probably want to spend longer in the country than if you're adding a stop in Greece after visiting nearby Italy.

Also consider how much of the country you want to see and the type of tourism you're interested in. Do you want to stick to a few days in Athens exploring the ancient sites, then head to an island for some fun in the sun? Do you want to just connect in Athens before flying immediately to a Greek island, or would you rather make the city your home base for the entire trip? Or are you interested in heading to the Greek countryside to experience traditional villages?

Most trips start and end in Athens, where you can experience the city in at least three full days. Visitors then tend to hop on a ferry or fly to a popular Greek island like Santorini or Mykonos, either basing themselves there or ferry-hopping between two or three others. You can reach mainland destinations by train or by hiring a car—factor in travel times between destinations when planning your vacation.

For a decent taster of the country, plan for a 10-day trip: Athens, plus one or two islands. Two weeks can provide a lovely combination of a city break and countryside getaways, plus swimming and sunbathing around the Greek coast.

One thing's for sure: Don't try to see it all in one trip. Greece is a country to savor and explore at leisure, with time to wander the charming cobbled streets and sip a frappe in a local cafe, watching local life unfold around you. Greece and its monuments have been around for centuries—they're not going anywhere.

Places to stay in Greece

Most vacations in Greece will commence in Athens, and there are many neighborhoods to choose from when booking a stay. While not a sprawling city by U.S. standards, it is one of the bigger European cities.

If you've never visited Athens before, a hotel located smack dab in the center, near the Acropolis and its accompanying museum, is a great choice. The upscale Herodion Hotel attracts visitors with its rooftop-bar views of the famous monument. Plus, it offers airport transfers.

Boutique hotels such as Asomaton (don't miss its relaxing plunge pool) and Altar Suites have cozy vibes in lovingly renovated centuries-old buildings. They're within walking distance of all Athens's main sites, as well as the contemporary old gasworks district of Gazi, where you'll find nightlife, tavernas and the industrial museum.

Heading to Santorini, base yourself at either Voreina Gallery Suites or Zannos Melathron Hotel . Both properties were renovated to their former splendor in the less-busy village of Pyrgos. You still get the magnificent Caldera sunset views without the crowds.

In Mykonos, Mykonos Town makes the best base if you don't mind being in the thick of it all. Hotels such as Semeli and Myconian Korali Relais & Chateaux have sleek Grecian lines and unfussy furnishings. Both have pools and airport transfers.

Create A LIfe you can fall in LOve with

A message from the Michalopoulos family, creators of CALILO:

Artist Profile: Angelos Michalopoulos

Calilo principles by angelos michalopoulos.

  • I will create a life I can fall in love with.
  • Let’s realise that the most beautiful moments of our life are those we feel so content and proud of the truth of who we are, that we no longer feel the slightest need to lie to ourselves.
  • Let’s understand that the world we live in has more emotions that we can feel, more beauty that we can see, more kindness than our soul take in.
  • Let us push aside any doubt that abducts our optimism and any asterisk we inset on our courage to stop us from being more brave than our pessimism can handle.
  • Let’s bypass any trap set up by our most logical but fearful argument to stop our soul from making us feel emotions.
  • Let’s allow our pathos and enthusiasm kick the doors of our soul wide open until we are able, not only to feel her incredible strength, but letting her sweep us along to the point where we believe in our emotions so much that we wont feel ashamed of the person the make us.
  • Let’s live producing beauty or celebrating the beauty others have produced.
  • I will ask the people I love to start paining the world around me with them, until I realise how much more I believe in beauty than in ugliness.
  • I will celebrate happiness and explain sadness. To enjoy life, let’s celebrate beauty by showering the people around us with our happiness and disarm ugliness by explaining our sadness to ourselves, until we are not sad anymore.
  • Let’s live by trying hard to celebrate our strengths and even harder to get to know our weaknesses as well as we need to disarm them.
  • Let’s live by trying hard to celebrate what gives birth to our happiness and even harder to find out which weaknesses of ours produce our sadness, so we can help the next emotion our soul gives birth to a benevolent expression of our beauty and not a vindictive proof of our ugliness.
  • Let’s fill the world around us with as much beauty as we have in us.
  • Every moment we live, we either share with the people around us the celebrations or the open injuries, the flowers or the garbage we have in our soul. That’s why let us discover which weaknesses of ours have already started forming the next words that will come out of our mouth, or the next deeds that will come out of our hands that will demand to fill the world around us with the pain of our inner injuries.
  • Max most apogee. Let’s live, create, celebrate and feel as intensely as we can.
  • Let’s live with our souls feeling at maximum. Our arms wide open and our lips ready to grab as much of our inner beauty as they can from the shyest, more vulnerable spots of our soul to try and transform in into the next smile of the people around us.
  • Let’s turn our souls on and let all their immense, indomitable pathos, and enthusiasm produce the beauty with which they will paint the world around us with so much truth that they will make it rediscover where it hid its beauty.

The CALILO Philosophy Podcast by Angelos Michalopoulos

The bill of the last truth 2.

At the end of every day the truth of who we are brings us the bill to pay for every word we said and every action we did during it. When we pay it in full, we see dreams at night and when we don’t, we see nightmares.

That’s why, everyday of my life, I threw in the garbage those last moments that found my body overflowing with brand new hugs, which I never found the emotional generosity to give to the people around me, and instead kept them locked inside me to become the questions my compassion would ask me the next day. Everyday of my life I threw in the garbage those last moments that reveal to my soul any part of its beauty that I failed to find enough kindness in me to defeat my ego and my greed, so that I could share it with the world around me.

MEDIOCRITY: LIONS AND COCKROACHES

Why be like lions living the life of cockroaches? We fail because the demands of greatness are huge and of failure, none. We are sad because the demands of happiness are great and of misery, none.

If we can become lions once in a while, why do we choose to live most of our lives like cockroaches? If we know what to do to be happier, why not do it more often? Why be like lions who choose to live like cockroaches? We live by throwing our strengths in the trash so that we won’t feel compelled to give sweat, our sense of security and truth to become the person they can make us be. We are in danger. We are in danger of our mediocrity. We live by donating our strengths to our weaknesses. We donate them to the fear that comes with doing something intense that will result in a mistake, a defeat, and those weaknesses of ours that caused it. We praise what we want to avoid using, but often use heavily, what we don’t particularly respect.

We glorify light because we know how much more convenient and effortless it is to spend large parts of our lives hiding in the dark. If we can be happy, kind and creative people once in a while, why don’t we be so more often? If we can be, once in a while, as true as our truth and as strong as our strength, why don’t we do so more often? Why are we so willing to surrender to the horrible grey, the appalling fog of our handmade apathy, cowardice and mediocrity, waiting for life to come and show us how kind, humane, strong and capable we could be? If we know how to feel intensely, why do we choose to spend big parts of our lives immersed in apathy and its best friend, boredom? If we can be as kind as we need to feel happy once in a while, why do we choose to be so mean that we end up being miserable? If we know how happy we become by living to the max, why do we choose to spend most of our time hiding in the minimal? If we can do it occasionally, why not do it more often?

We trust what we know, fear what we don’t and dread what we have intentionally left unknown. Self-knowledge is the mother of success and happiness. If we knew our weaknesses well enough to disarm them, we wouldn’t be afraid of them. We wouldn’t be afraid of doing something new, intense or extreme that would forcibly toss us onto our mistakes and defeats, that is, onto the truth of who we are, which our weaknesses are a great part of. Instead, we choose to spend a large part of our life hidden in the lies we use to convince ourselves that we have twice as many strengths and half as many weaknesses. When we get to discover our weaknesses, we will defeat the “once in a while” label we’ve installed in front of our brain and we will be able to be our best selves more often than we become our worst. So, let’s stop covering up our weaknesses with the lies that we tell ourselves and let’s start learning them. Let’s live our life exposing, as often as we can, the lies we’ve been telling ourselves for years, until we unmask those weaknesses of ours that produced them. When we get to know our weaknesses, we will stop being afraid of them, and will free ourselves enough to live our life to the max. We are lions that choose to live the biggest portion of our lives as cockroaches because the demands of greatness are huge and of failure, none.

Thankfully, there will never be a shortage of people who want to build a world where a smile defeats a swearword, where the truth of a “yes” defeats the hypocrisy and dishonesty of a “maybe”, and where the compassion out of which a caress is woven defeats the hypocrisy the most frightened parts of our worst-selves keep producing.

Yet we fear our weaknesses so much that we hesitate to show our beauty, so we end up constantly showing the parts of our character our ugliness wants to show. Let’s finally learn the truth of who we are and those weaknesses of ours that make up the ugliest and most painful part of us so that we stop fearing it. Let’s create a life during which we defend the beauty of our soul without examining what we gain or lose by doing so. Let’s never betray our soul, no matter how many emotional and physical benefits our logic promises to give us.

CALILO: EMOTIONAL HONESTY: AS HONEST AS MY SOUL

I will live by doing my best to be as honest as my soul, because every time I stood to be as real as my truth, as emotionally solid as my soul and as pure as my beliefs, I realised what it meant to be so in love with your life, and so proud of who you are, that you don’t want to be anyone else, no matter how much more powerful, attractive and victorious you could become

I will live by doing everything I can to deserve my soul, refusing to betray the beliefs it is made of just so I can secure the tempting gains my logic never stops promising me. I have never felt happier in my life than during those times when I felt that I deserved my beliefs, having refused to betray them to achieve the easy victory promised to me by the most victorious yet dishonest thought I had in my mind at the time. I will believe so much in my beliefs that I will become so honest with myself that I won’t be able to be anything else but happy. When I manage to become as honest as my soul, I will feel as beautiful as her beauty.

Beauty is born to defeat the sadness that ugliness produces.

Waste of beauty is the most meaningless human endeavour. Let’s use our soul’s beauty to make our lives, and those of the people around us, more beautiful, and the power of our brain to help any ugliness we encounter explain to itself what makes it feel ugly until it discovers where it hid its beauty. Our life is paved, from end to end, with joy and sorrow. Let’s embrace our joys and let them free to roam our soul, painting her with their inexhaustible optimism, beauty and passion, and let’s explain our sorrows by discovering which weaknesses of ours gave birth to or magnified them.

Life is the celebration of beauty, but even more so, the celebration of an ugliness that was never born because it was explained. Every time we manage to explain to ourselves what makes us feel ugly, a celebration of beauty begins.

EREGO. Each of us is a revolution of good. Each of us can be a rebellion of beauty against global ugliness. So, let’s start fighting with all the means at our disposal to overturn negativity, turn sadness into happiness and illuminate any darkness that steals away our light until we convince it to no longer want to hide in its gloom.

The more we love, the less we fear. When we’re not afraid to love, we fear nothing.

Love adores those who have the courage to fight their hatred. Since love is the reward of courage, hatred is the reward of cowardice. Happiness decided to be the reward of emotional honesty thousands of years ago. It has never gone back on its word since. I will strive to be so emotionally honest that I won’t be able to become anything else but happy.

THE UNKNOWN SELF- KNOWLEDGE

Liars have all it takes to be sad because, by fearing the truth, they end up fearing their own soul that produces it.

Consequently, they choose to keep as far away from their soul as needed to never find their happiness that lives within her. Self-knowledge is the mother of happiness. People who become happy are those who, having told the truth to themselves, know their weaknesses as well as needed to disarm them before they block the road that leads to their happiness. There’s nothing our weaknesses want less than for us to be happy because this way, they keep us as weak as they need to defeat us. Self-knowledge is the mother of happiness because we trust what we know and fear what we don’t. Our choice is to either get to know our weaknesses better or forget about our happiness. Our biggest fear, our alpha fear, is the unknown we create out of everything we choose to never learn. It’s the fear that gives birth to all other fears and the source of our most undefinable sadness. We fear the unknown every time it dresses up as the darkness around us, or the future ahead of us, tearing into our lives to show and prove to us how much stronger and more determined than us it is. The one unknown we are most terrified of is the part of our character we have intentionally left unknown. We fear what we don’t know and that’s why we haven’t stopped learning, ever since childhood, to overcome our fears, the ones anything unknown around us engender. The less we know about something, the more we fear it.

We trust what we know, fear what we don’t, and dread what we’ve intentionally left unknown. The less we know about our weaknesses, the more we fear them, and the less confident we feel when dealing with any problem we face, which they create or magnify. As long as we choose to keep our weaknesses unknown, we live locked in a fortress contained by the fears of the unknown, blocked even from our own dreams and potential. We live in the fortress we’ve built from our knowledge, from all we have learned so far, seeing from afar the person we could become hugging our dreams and living freer and happier than us outside of it. Thankfully, we are much better than we think at defeating the things that want to make us miserable. We have many mental and emotional weapons and allies to defeat our weaknesses at our disposal and, by extension, defeat the misery they cause or magnify for us. To manage to do that, we should not be afraid to learn them as well as we need to disarm them before they lead us to the wrong decisions and the defeats that will fill us with sorrow, pain, disillusionment and low self-esteem.

Max most apogee. If only we knew our weaknesses better, we would enjoy life more – since we wouldn’t be afraid that, by showing who we truly are, by feeling or doing something as intense as the truth we are made of, we might produce a defeat that would throw us against those weaknesses of ours that spawned it. If we knew our weaknesses better, we wouldn’t be so afraid to get close to ourselves, close to our truth, by feeling more and thinking less. The power of our soul will become our power, only when we believe in her. The more we believe in our soul, the stronger we become.

Happiness will go where truth already is.

To protect ourselves from what we shouldn’t know, we live by learning a lot and forgetting even more.

We live by mobilising our lies to constantly protect us from our own truth. With every passing day, our lives are filled with more unknown, no matter how good we are at fooling ourselves that we know more because we’ve learned so much. Instead of becoming the truth of who we are, we become the lie that, at any point, suits us better. As we grow older, to protect ourselves from the truth of who we are, we become better at erasing than at writing, better at forgetting than at learning, better at tearing down than at building, better at being afraid than at hoping. As we grow older, we become better at not letting reality remind us of who we could become and at avoiding doing things that might show us those capabilities of ours we hide behind our delusions. Not only do we not try to learn the unknown around us and turn it into knowledge, but we generate it ourselves. To protect ourselves from what we should never realise, we choose to forget more than we learn. The older we get, the better we become at forgetting than learning, for we become better at protecting ourselves from what threatens our own lies. We choose to forget everything that threatens the lies we tell ourselves rather than learn what is committed to support our truth.

We live surrendering our happiness to the unknown. To protect our delusions from the truth, and our ego from its next rendezvous with defeat, we continuously get better at producing the unknown by forgetting what we know, or not realising what we’ve learned, instead of demolishing it by learning it.

Darkness can be so convenient! We rarely go anywhere without our handmade darkness. It’s the darkness we manufacture ourselves so that we can hide from everything the light wants to reveal! We create handmade darkness out of all we don’t want to learn, all we’ve learnt but don’t want to realise, and all we intentionally forget. By forgetting what we know, or not realising what we’ve learnt, we manage to turn, in seconds, our knowledge into ignorance, thus acquitting ourselves of the possible defeat in the battle before us, or offering us an excuse to not even try to fight it.

UNKNOWN: UNKNOWN SELF KNOWLEDGE

We've made ignorance our favourite excuse for not living.

We’ve made ignorance our favourite excuse for not trying. As long as we don’t know, we don’t feel compelled to try and achieve. How convenient, if it wasn’t so fake! We live by refusing to learn to become better and by not feeling obliged to support the increased demands of this improvement. This way, we become worse until we become so bad that we can’t be anything but miserable. We fear that learning something will make us feel compelled to turn our strengths into victories, thus, risking losing and feeling the pain of a possible defeat due to contact with our weaknesses. On the other hand, by avoiding learning, forgetting something we already know, or not realising all that we do know, we decrease the possibility of doing something that might lead us to a defeat.

HAPPINESS 18561

Nobody becomes happy accidentally. Happy are the people who don’t believe in their sadness.

How much we believe in our happiness determines how happy we become. As long as we are accidental searchers for truth, we’ll only become happy by accident. As long as we become happy just because we can’t bear the pain of sadness, the only thing we’ll manage to do is briefly trick our misery. How can we deserve our happiness when we believe in it so little? Often, we start telling the truth again only when we can no longer bear the immense misery our lies produce. We often become as real as we need to become happy only because we can no longer bear how miserable our lies make us.
