I highly recommend OFTEN taking fun trips with friends near where you live. Short and sweet trips are a great way to “test the waters” of traveling with friends without putting too much stress on a relationship. Especially if your travel styles are quite different.

Here are awesome places to go with friends on the weekend, including ideas across the US and Canada.

1. HOUSEBOATING near you

My very first BIG trip with friends was a houseboating weekend in beautiful British Columbia. It was perfect! 

We soaked in the hot tub and slid down the waterslide when we got too hot. Ate way too much ice cream. Met some cuties. And we even crashed. Yup, we did. There’s nothing like a little drama to pull you together! (Make sure you get insurance, ‘cause those boats are harder to steer than they look!)

Find the nearest pretty lake country near you, book a car and make it happen. It’s like camping but with a waterslide.

2. Fun LOS ANGELES weekend getaway for girls

A girls trip to LA is pretty classic. Strut your stuff like Pretty Woman on Rodeo Drive. Hit up the star-prone restaurants. And time it with the Oscars to experience the red carpet. It’s possibly THE most epic place to travel with friends on the weekend.

Or, if you’re not into the Hollywood mayhem, stay on beautiful Santa Monica Beach. Cycle The Strand bike path along the waterfront. Ride the ferris wheel on the pier. And people-watch while enjoying incredible beachfront restaurants.

Where to stay with friends in Los Angeles:

• Casa Del Mar resort and spa (Santa Monica): Right on Santa Monica Beach, with an outdoor pool, restaurants and live music on Sundays. Every room has a hydrotherapy spa tub and floor-to-ceiling windows, some with an ocean view.

3. FLORIDA KEYS road trips with friends

A road trip from Miami to the tip of the Florida Keys is the perfect mix of beach and culture. It’s only about 3.5 hours, with plenty of time to stop along the way.

If you’re not from Miami, spend a day exploring its museums, Bayside Marketplace at the waterfront, or cultural neighborhoods like Little Havana.

Then, rent a car and head out to Key West. Along the way, stop to play with dolphins, feel the sand between your toes, and eat and drink with a view. Want more adventure? Where better to go skydiving with the girls than in Key West?!

4. NEW ORLEANS weekend getaway with friends

Visiting the plantations in Louisiana would certainly make for a memorable travel experience with friends in the USA. Stay in a former plantation mansion, the elegant Nottoway Plantation that dates back to the 1850s. It’s the south’s largest antebellum mansion, located right on the Mississippi River. It features antiques and fireplaces in the rooms. Plus, an outdoor pool, hot tub, onsite dining and self-guided tours.

Plantations to visit near New Orleans, Louisiana:

• Oak Alley Plantation : Known for the stunning Oak-lined path entrance to this sugarcane plantation. Features tours of the “big house” (with a pretty wrap-around upper balcony), slave cabins, expansive garden and exhibits.
• Whitney Plantation : Famous for its ground-breaking slavery museum, with restored buildings and educational guided tours.
• Destrehan Plantation : Established in 1787, this sugar plantation was the site of one of the three trials following the 1811 Slave Revolt. Features interpretive tours, exhibits and pretty grounds.

5. Fun trips with friends to NEW YORK CITY

New York City can be anything you and your friends want it to be. 

Times Square and Fifth Avenue are perfect for high-end shopping, flashing lights and nightlife. Its museums, Broadway theater and The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts are epic for the culturalists. Foodies will love exploring Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. And for those who love relaxation, Central Park, Staten Island and Brooklyn waterfront promise amazing views. I’d argue that NYC is one of the BEST places to travel with friends.

On my trip with friends to NYC, we stayed in a boutique hotel in the Upper West Side . Within a block, we had a small pastry shop, grocery store and plenty of cute cafes. We could easily walk to Central Park and Riverside Park (perfect for a You’ve Got Mail walking tour). And since we were surrounded by residential streets, I got to meet so many dogs out for their walk! Plus, easy subway access to everything else.

6. SEATTLE jazz weekend trips with friends

I love Seattle, Washington. Its Pike Place Market and waterfront restaurants. Plenty of jazz clubs. And lots of excellent shopping and coffee shops, too. Seattle has beautiful waterfront parks, artsy museums, Space Needle views, and boat tours to stay busy. Time it with a concert, too!

When I visited Seattle with one of my best friends, we LOVED the comfortable beds and pillows at the Staypineapple Maxwell Hotel . You simply cannot get a better sleep! It’s colorful vibe is super fun, too, and it has an indoor pool and bikes you can use. Price includes wifi.

Now, as much as I love the Staypineapple beds, you can’t get a better location than The Edgewater . It’s right at Pier 67, with fabulous views of Elliot Bay and the Olympic Mountains. Elegant rooms have fireplaces, cozy furnishings and spa bathroom. The property features an onsite restaurant, gift shop and coffee bar. Price includes wifi and downtown shuttle.

7. Fun LAS VEGAS weekend trips with friends

I’ll admit that Las Vegas is pretty low on my list of places to visit, but I understand the appeal – especially with friends. Awesome shows. Epic shopping. Sights you just won’t see anywhere else.

If you want to embrace the chaos, Las Vegas Strip is the place to stay. If you want to come up to breathe, consider a place like Tahiti Village Resort & Spa near the airport and outlet mall.

You’ll also find some incredible house rentals on VRBO , both near The Strip or near the mountains.

8. Epic CANYON road trips with friends

A great add-on to a friends Vegas trip, especially for the outdoorsy adventurers at heart, is a 2-day canyon road trip . Hike the amazing canyons of Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon North Rim and Antelope slot canyon.

You have some incredible options for places to stay, too. Under Canvas near Lake Powell has lovely tents with a cozy wood-burning stove and private balcony with canyon views. Or book the luxury Amangiri spa resort, tucked right into the rocks. It has an onsite restaurant, bar, concierge, sauna and spa. And the rooms look AMAZING.

9. AMUSEMENT PARK hopping trips with friends

Are you guys dare-devils? How fun would it be to go amusement park hopping together?!

Top on my list are Coney Island in New York City and Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. In Canada, Montreal’s Six Flags is lots of fun.

To visit a bunch on one trip, take a road trip through California or Pennsylvania. Yup, Pennsylvania! Check out this USA Today article for 17 awesome parks.

10. BEACH resort weekend getaway with friends

You can have an amazing beach resort getaway with friends even without leaving the continental USA. One of my favorite spots is about half an hour from downtown Jacksonville, Florida, at the lovely Ponte Vedra Beach seaside community. It’s also known as San Pablo Island, and is a great mixture of relaxing beaches and bustling Jacksonville nearby.

A wonderful place for a beach weekend getaway with friends is Ponte Vedra Inn and Club . Its beach and gardens are beautiful, with warm and comfortable rooms. Enjoy four heated pools, bikes, seven restaurants and lounges, and plenty of onsite shops and boutiques. Despite all of its amenities, it feels like a charming boutique inn.

Our equivalent for relaxation in Canada is Prince Edward Island. It’s super low-key and perfect for friends who just want to chill.

Dalvay by the Sea Hotel is classic and luxurious, located on the north shore. It’s inside a national park and has an onsite restaurant, bar, tennis courts and bike rentals. Or stay in one of many lovely historic inns in Charlottetown. I highly recommend the charming Fairholm National Historic Inn .

11. Fun ARTSY places to go with friends

Here are two very different types of artsy places to go with friends.

First, East Hampton Art Bed and Breakfast on Long Island. This sprawling property is perfect for art lovers and those looking for a refreshing getaway. Relax in the outdoor pool and jacuzzi while admiring the meditation garden, waterfalls, and lotus pond.

And second, head to Memphis to meet the king! If your friends are big music buffs, you’ll enjoy exploring the Memphis Rock ‘n Soul Museum, Gibson Guitar Factory, and Orpheum Theatre. And of course, the iconic Beale Street’s shops and restaurants. 

Stay at the Peabody Memphis with an onsite dining room, spa, indoor pool and luxurious bathrobes. And don’t miss Peabody’s “March of the ducks” tradition!

12. LAKEFRONT retreat weekend trips with friends

Head to Upstate New York for a weekend trip with friends at the lake. 

Inns of Aurora is a community of five lakefront properties. They’re beautiful and cozy, with wine tastings, yoga and painting classes. Plus, a private beach, lakeside firepits, paddling and bikes. Organic, fair-trade coffee and fresh scones in the morning. Farm-to-table restaurant during the day. Book a room with a fireplace and lake views.

13. Fun weekend trips with friends in TEXAS

There are plenty of beautiful resorts in Texas perfect for weekend trips with friends. One of my favorites is the JL Bar Ranch Resort and Spa in lovely Texas Hill Country. This estate is grand, with a full-service spa, outdoor pool and two restaurants. Plus, pretty gardens to explore, complete with a fountain. Rooms offer warm decor, with gorgeous dark wood accents, furnished patios, bathrobes and slippers. Price includes wifi.

Another favorite is Commodore Perry Estate in Austin Texas. Its manicured gardens are gorgeous, as is the massive library with floor-to-ceiling bookcases and plush couches. You’ll also spend plenty of time in its elegant tea room, pool, terrace and restaurant. Book a room with a terrace for pretty views. Price includes wifi and shuttle service.

14. WINE AND SPA getaways with friends

Do you girls love sipping wine and relaxing with beautiful views? One of the best places to travel with friends in the USA is Napa Valley, California. Napa Valley is about 1.5 hours northeast of the San Francisco International Airport. You’ll find more than 375 wineries, more than 150 restaurants, and beautiful weather year-round. Napa Valley is nestled among two mountain ranges, with incredible views wherever you look.

For weekend getaways with friends at Canadian wineries, choose from gorgeous views in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, and Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. All three locations have excellent wines, spas and views.

Where to stay for a wine and spa getaway with the girls:

• Auberge du Soleil Resort (Rutherford, California): This gorgeous resort is the ultimate friends weekend getaway, surrounded by a 33-acre olive grove. Relax in cabanas at the pool. Indulge at the spa and fine dining restaurant.

Take your international trip with friends around Europe chasing castles! The biggest challenge will be narrowing your castle adventure to a geographical area, like England or France.

Pick the most iconic castle or area you most want to see and plan the rest of your friends vacation from there. Here are three ideas:

• Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany): The most classic fairytale-like castle nestled in the Bavarian Alps. Take in its stunning architecture, lush surroundings, and panoramic views. Other (relatively) nearby castles to visit include the medieval and mountaintop Hohenwerfen Fortress in Austria and 
• Château de Chambord (France): A Renaissance masterpiece with elegant French architecture and vast gardens. It’ll enchant you with its grand halls and intricate details. Other notable French castles to visit include the lovely Château de Chenonceau built atop an old mill and the opulent Palace of Versailles.

Austria is a captivating blend of stunning landscapes, rich history, and cultural experiences. Start your trip with friends in Vienna , the capital city. It’s a hub of art, music and architecture, with magnificent palaces, cathedrals and museums. Pick accommodations near City Center so you can walk to St. Stephen’s Cathedral for evening drinks.

Then, travel through the Danube’s Wachau Valley before heading south to Salzburg. Wachau Valley is a beautiful area of vineyards and cute villages along the river valley. I also highly recommend a stop at Stift Melk Abbey .

Roam the streets and hills surrounding the lovely city of Salzburg , the birthplace of Mozart and setting for the Sound of Music. It’s a charming old town with cobblestone streets, lovely gardens, and the iconic Hohensalzburg Fortress looming above.

I’ve been to Italy only once and long to go back. There is SO much to see in Italy and it would be absolutely amazing to experience it with my best girl friends. Given the variety of sights to see, I recommend either getting a train pass for the time you’re there or renting a car.

On a road trip through Italy, start and stop in the vibrant city of Rome. Rome is a must-visit for historical landmarks like the Colosseum, Vatican City, and the Trevi Fountain. Stroll its charmings streets while indulging in pastas and gelato.

Then head up to Venice, a unique floating city built on canals. On your return to Rome, stop in Florence to see the famous Statue of David and beautiful churches. Then calm things down with a few days exploring the stunning Cinque Terre coastline and Tuscany wineries.

If you have more time, continue south of Rome to explore the historic ruins of Pompeii. It’s just south of Naples, another gorgeous coastal city. Sorrento and the Amalfi coast promise more spectacular views and memories for an epic trip with friends.

My main tip for visiting Thailand is to get out of Bangkok as quickly as possible. It’s busy, smoggy and not especially friendly. Instead, head north to Chiang Mai to experience the floating markets . Climb an ancient temple and brush up against an elephant. Then indulge at a beach resort at Phuket or the Phi Phi islands . Bask on white sand beach, surrounded by gorgeous limestone peaks and perfect turquoise waters.

25. Epic CAMBODIA trips with friends

Ancient temples, jungle and Tomb Raider. And an incredibly resilient people that carry an awful history of genocide. Cambodia is a place that will touch your soul and guarantees a friends trip you’ll never forget.

You’ll want to visit both the capital of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, home to the famous temples. In Phnom Penh, visit markets, temples and gardens. But hold onto your food, because those monkeys are gutsy! And my opinion is that tourists should pay their respects at the genocide sites . How else can we begin to appreciate what their people have been through?

In Siem Reap, explore the gorgeous temple ruins of Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm. A local guide can also take you to lesser-known temples you can climb with a jungle view all to yourself. Be sure to have a drink at The Red Piano and ask for a Tomb Raider drink. Cheers!

26. JAPANESE MONASTERY places to travel with friends

I’ve only had a taste of visiting Japan on a layover in Tokyo on our way to Vietnam, but they completely charmed me with their hospitality! Japan is now on my bucket list, and specifically the zen experience of staying in Japanese monasteries.

Two iconic Japanese monastery communities to visit on a trip with friends include Kōya-san (Mount Kōya) and Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). Mount Kōya is in a mountainous region about 7 hours southwest of Tokyo. It’s home to over a hundred temples including the famous Kongōbu-ji. Stay in shukubo (temple lodgings) with traditional Japanese-style rooms, vegetarian meals, and the opportunity to participate in morning meditations.

Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) is right in Kyoto. It’s known for its stunning golden exterior, and creates a breathtaking view as it reflects off the surrounding pond. Explore its exquisite gardens and the historic tea house inside the complex.

27. Fun AUSTRALIA beach road trips with friends

Australia is known for powdery white-sand beaches. So, rent a car and go beach-hopping on a road trip with friends!

Fly into Sydney and start your trip with friends at the iconic Bondi Beach . It’s known for its vibrant atmosphere, excellent surf and coastal walks. Take in the lively beach culture as you sample the many beachside cafes.

Then, head south for about 3 hours to Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay. It holds a Guinness World Record for having the whitest sand. Swim and snorkel at these beautiful clear waters and enjoy the laid-back coastal vibe.

Along the way, stop at the coastal Royal National Park and inland Heathcote National Park . They offer rugged hiking and other adventures that balance nicely with beach-bumming!

Luckily, with my broad experience road tripping across the country on numerous occasions, I’ve narrowed down a few of the best places I’ve stumbled across as well as some vacation ideas that can be virtually accomplished in any state.

Taking a road trip across the United States is something I’ve done on various occasions…and would totally recommend as a group vacation idea.   Between adventures like jet skiing in Florida , caving in Virginia , gambling in Las Vegas , or attending the Winter X Games in Aspen , you will always find plenty of things to do!

4.) Take a Cruise to Hawaii

Coming from first-hand experience (after all, I used to work on a cruise ship in Hawaii ), take a cruise to the Hawaiian Islands.  

With room & boar d already covered along with your meals, you can focus on creating unforgettable memories discovering the Spirit of Aloha at a Luau while exploring places like Oahu , Maui , Kauai , and of course the Big Island . 

5.) Go to the Beach

Three out of the four borders of the United States is surrounded by water.  With this in mind, some great group vacation ideas at the beach is always a win.

With the vast number of coastal states, the majority of the population in the U.S. can easily make it the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, or the Great Lakes.  For those in Alaska, you have the Arctic Ocean to rely on but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend going for a swim there; but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to go fishing!

6.) Visit the Nation’s Capital – Washington D.C.

There is a lot going on in the nation’s capital.  Between the memorials, monuments, and Smithsonian, you could easily take the group for a patriotic tour learning the history of our great country.

Napa and Sonoma are already overrun with large groups. So if everyone in your party is of legal drinking age, escape further north to Woodinville Wine Country just outside of Seattle. The region holds its own with more than 100 wineries and tasting rooms; standouts include Mark Ryan Winery , The Woodhouse Wine Estates , Chateau Ste. Michelle (pictured) and JM Cellars . Just be sure to make reservations for groups larger than eight. Serious aficionados can advance their knowledge by taking wine classes at Columbia Winery . Dude Ranch: Tanque Verde Ranch, Arizona

For something different, Tanque Verde Ranch ; offers the activities of a dude ranch, plus the amenities of an upscale resort. A wide selection of daily offerings cater to group interests, such as breakfast and sunset rides, horsemanship lessons, yoga, mountain biking or hiking. There's even a daily kids program that offers fishing, tennis and watercolor classes in addition to rides and lessons. Meanwhile, evenings bring hearty barbeques, live music and line dancing. Ski Resort: Big Sky Resort, Montana

Located at the basecamp of Yellowstone National Park , Big Sky is known as the biggest ski resort in the U.S. Even better, it doesn't get as crowded or as expensive as the more popular ones. It's one of the best in the country for every skill level from beginner through advanced, whether skiers or snowboarders. Groups of 25 or more can also get special rates on lift tickets. As for lodging, mountain options include a nice mix of cabins, chalets and condos.

Sailing: Maine Windjammer Cruises, Maine

Eco-friendly Maine Windjammer Cruises offer nine different tall sailing ships, some of which can accommodate up to 40 people. There's no set itinerary on these three-to-six day sailings since routes are weather dependent. However, the century-old schooners stick to charming Maine ports and islands. Life onboard is simple and varies slightly depending on the ship, but commonalities include fresh baked goods and a traditional lobster bake. (Some cruises hold the lobster bake on a beach.) Otherwise, days are spent as you wish, whether learning the ropes of how to sail, swimming or simply watching harbor seals and eagles.

Amusement Park: Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Virginia

In addition to offering group rates, Busch Gardens Williamsburg in Virginia tends to be a good option for groups seeking fewer crowds and lower prices. It's comprised of both a theme park and water park: The former features themed attractions grouped around different European countries, complete with major coasters for adults as well as kid-friendly rides. Entertainment shows and wildlife attractions are other highlights. New this year is the park's first wooden roller coaster with a 74-foot drop, while its first virtual reality ride will be opening in 2018. Stay in one of the many nearby hotels and resorts, and consider a side trip to Colonial Williamsburg .

Old School: Mackinac Island, Michigan

This car-free island is only accessible by ferry, transporting visitors to an era where horse-drawn carriages still prevail. It's easy to spend days wandering around fudge shops, art galleries, boutiques, historic forts and small museums. The island is also ideal for bikes, especially Mackinac Island State Park . Use the historic Grand Hotel as your base, since activities involve old timey lawn games (croquet, bocce) and afternoon tea. There's also a golf course, daily children's program, pool and spa. Lakeside Mission Point is another great option for families since the gorgeous property offers kite-flying lessons, glow-in-the-dark golf, bike rentals and more. It can even arrange horseback riding lessons.

Volunteer: Sierra Club, Nationwide

Sierra Club Outings run a wide variety of year-round service trips across the U.S. that can accommodate up to 20 people. Recent and upcoming examples include restoring trails in Glacier National Park in Montana; working at a wolf conservation center in New York; and clearing weeds from the Honokowai Valley on Maui. Leisure activities, from whale watching to hiking, depend on the locale. Although most trips are for those 18 and older, there are some family options that welcome children too. For example, families can volunteer at a working farm in Pennsylvania, where everyone milks cows, feeds horses and collects eggs. Did we mention the trip coincides with baby goat season?

This former Boy Scout camp in Northern California now hosts everyone from corporate retreats to family gatherings. Lodging options on the 200-acre property are plentiful, from traditional cabins (enclosed or open-air) to teepees. Meanwhile, activities encompass everything from archery to yoga. Beach Town: Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Just off the coast of South Carolina, Hilton Head Island makes for an ideal respite in the Lowcountry. Popular with families, the laid-back atmosphere is conducive for enjoying 12 miles of pristine public beach and for playing tennis or golf. (There are 24 golf courses on the island.) When your group needs a break, there are more than 200 shops and an even greater number of restaurants. City Break: New Orleans

New Orleans is easy to navigate with a large group, with options to keep everyone entertained. All ages should visit the city's above-ground cemeteries, take a steamboat cruise and ride the historic streetcars. Tour Mardi Gras World to learn about the parade's history and watch floats being built. Kids will especially enjoy Carousel Gardens , a small amusement park in the city, and the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas . The fun doesn't have to end at night, since children are welcome at some jazz clubs, including the iconic Preservation Hall . Lodging isn't an issue either, as many hotels offer group rates.

Everyone shares a bunkbed cabin with someone else of the same gender; each yacht sleeps eight and travels in a flotilla of up to eight boats, so there is plenty of socialising. The yachts island-hop around Greece, Turkey, Croatia, or Italy (and the Caribbean too), making ports of call at villages and historic sights. Guests can try watersports, such as wakeboarding, join in the weekly regatta and enter a fancy dress contest on the last night. The setting is the Makuleke Concession, a remote part of the Kruger national park in South Africa, or the Mashatu game reserve in Botswana; sightings may include lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos. Guests walk up to 10km a day, carrying their own supplies, and learn to track animals, navigate, set up camp, make fires and leave no trace. Nights are spent wild camping under the stars. Camino de Santiago, Spain

Solo travellers planning a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain won’t be short of company – 300,000 people completed the journey in 2017, an increase of nearly 200,000 in a decade. The Camino Francés is by far the most popular path, but the oldest route, the Camino Primitivo, is also good for lone pilgrims. The full 311km over the Cantabrian mountains is challenging, but the last 100km can be walked in a self-guided week with Camino Ways. Setting off from the walled town of Lugo, the first three days are spent following quiet Roman roads through forests and farmland. ‘Poshtel’ stay, Barcelona

Hostels have always been a great places to meet fellow travellers – and these days, staying in one doesn’t have to mean roughing it. Casa Gracia , in a modernista mansion in Barcelona, is one of the new breed of poshtels. It has lots of stylish communal areas for hanging out and making friends, including a roof terrace; regular activities such as yoga, wine tasting and cooking classes; as well as events such as comedy nights and quizzes. Canyoning and hiking in Serbia

How a group tour changed my whole approach to travel

I 've always considered myself a fiercely independent traveler. I've navigated more than 50 countries on my own, and while I have sometimes booked short excursions, usually for a day, it had never occurred to me to book a group tour. That changed when I decided to take two of my children on a family tour with Intrepid Travel . 

I had planned on spending our winter break in the Middle East but changed my mind at the last minute due to safety concerns . Because of the abrupt change, I knew I wouldn't have time to plan an itinerary, book hotels and arrange transportation before our departure date. However, I didn’t want to let that stop me from having an adventure. I'm glad I took a chance on a group tour because it changed the way I travel. Here's how.

The trip planning was stress-free

I spent a little time comparing tour companies but quickly honed in on Intrepid. The company offers a variety of itineraries for families at different price points, and a few of my friends had been on its tours and had a good experience. I also liked that Intrepid offers specialized tours for different types of travelers, including family tours . 

At first I planned on an "original" style family tour but upgraded to a "comfort" tour, which included more activities and meals along with upgraded accommodations. Although it cost more, the company's 10-day Morocco Family Holiday tour was still within my budget and looked like a good value.

Once I committed to a tour, my planning was essentially done. That was a huge relief. I normally spend hours searching for hotels , figuring out some must-do activities in every location along with some off-the-beaten-track attractions, researching transportation options, and gathering restaurant recommendations. Although I often find it's fun, it’s also time-consuming and can become draining for trips that involve several stops.

Even though a group tour was not exactly what I would have planned on my own, Intrepid's Morocco itinerary was fairly close. I thought giving up some control was well worth the trade-off of not having to do all the planning on my own. Because Intrepid uses local teams based at its tour destinations to plan trips, I also hoped having a local involved would bring me to places I never would have found on my own.

Instead of reading hotel reviews and booking entry tickets, I spent the weeks leading up to my family vacation learning more about Moroccan culture. I knew this would enrich my experience more than figuring out all of the details for a trip abroad to run smoothly. I'm usually a mix of excited and stressed in the week or two leading up to a big trip. This time I was mostly excited, and my stress was at a minimum. 

Though I won’t stick exclusively to group tours in the future, this trip taught me to not sweat the small stuff so much. I don’t need to spend so much time finding the perfect hotel or restaurant to have a great trip.

Group trips are fantastic for solo travelers and parents traveling on their own

Before I had a family, I often traveled on my own. Though I enjoyed solo travel , it was lonely at times, even more so when I stopped staying at youth hostels and lost access to the fantastic communities they provide. Now I frequently travel with my two younger children. They are fantastic travel companions, but on longer trips I sometimes find myself longing for adult interaction or an extra pair of hands. Additionally, even though my kids usually get along well, they sometimes get sick of each other in the absence of any other playmates.

On my Intrepid trip, I had other adults to talk to throughout the day. That was a refreshing change from my usual experience of going a week or more without speaking to another adult for more than five minutes, usually for transactional matters like checking into a hotel. My kids also quickly made friends with the other children on the trip. Not surprisingly, all of the families on the trip had similar interests and an adventurous spirit. My children and I were the only Americans in the group, and it was interesting learning more about life in New Zealand, Canada and Australia from the other families.

The parents in the group quickly started leaning on one another for support. One mom, also traveling alone with her children, asked me to take one of her daughters on an outing so she could get some one-on-one time with her other child. I asked a different mom to keep an eye on my son while I packed our things for the next day. It was nice not feeling as if I was on my own.

This "it takes a village" spirit is something I want to bring with me in my future travels. Although it’s not possible to replicate the experience of traveling with other families, it is possible to seek out connections away from home. For example, on a recent trip, my son wanted to play soccer with local children who lived near our hotel. Instead of rushing him away so we could squeeze in another activity, I let him play. He wound up meeting up with the other kids every night we were there, sharing candy and communicating with an app. The nights playing soccer were a highlight of that trip for him and something I probably would not have let him do before my experience with a group tour.  

I appreciated a slower pace

I have serious FOMO and often pack too much into my days when I travel. When I first reviewed the itinerary, I noted right away that it had downtime and even an entire free afternoon built into the trip. Though I know many people enjoy that balance, I was worried I would feel bored and come away feeling as if I had traveled halfway around the world and missed seeing all there is to do.

The reality is it’s impossible to do everything. Trying is exhausting and impossible. There is always something left on the to-do list at the end of the trip. It was refreshing to go into a trip not trying to see an entire country in two weeks and being OK with that from the outset. 

Though there were a couple of other things I would have liked to have squeezed in, I was very happy with the balance of activities and downtime. Other than all-inclusive family vacations and trips to family resorts , I normally don’t schedule time to just relax while I am traveling. It was really nice to have time to read and play UNO with my kids. I also liked that Intrepid had a couple of optional activities for those of us who didn’t want quite as much downtime as others.

I do still feel pressure to see and do everything when I travel, but going on a group trip helped me see the value in traveling at a slower pace. Some of my favorite moments from my Intrepid trip happened during scheduled downtime; they gave me and my children time to just enjoy being with one another without the pressures of work and school. It’s a lesson I’ve tried to carry with me as I’ve planned future trips. 

Learning from a local is invaluable 

One reason I chose Intrepid is the company uses all local guides, and most tours use the same guide throughout the trip. It may sound obvious that learning from locals is the best way to get to know a country, but I had underestimated just how valuable traveling with a local guide would be.

I learned much about Moroccan culture through our tour guide, who was always willing to answer questions about his life and traditions. He even brought us to his family home to meet his parents and niece, which was a very special experience. He was also helpful when it came to practical matters like finding an ATM.  

For future trips, I will be more open to taking guided tours with local guides, even if it’s just for a few hours. I will also make it a point to try to talk to more locals, as long as I can do so without bothering them too much. 

Even though it wasn’t what I had originally planned, not only did I have a great experience on my trip with Intrepid, it has also forever changed the way I plan to travel.

Mistakes People Make On Group Trips

Group trips are a great way to explore a new destination and make lifelong memories while connecting with loved ones. But with many different personalities and preferences at play, issues can arise.

“Most of the time, bad experiences on group trips aren’t a byproduct of going on a group trip,” Wendy Diep, a co-founder of the group travel app Let’s Jetty , told HuffPost. “It usually stems from poor planning, lack of communication and unmet expectations. But remember, it doesn’t have to be that way.”

To help make group travel a more enjoyable experience, HuffPost asked Diep and other experts to share some common mistakes that people make on these types of trips.

“Most people prefer to travel with loved ones, and post-pandemic, people are craving human connection and real-world experiences more than ever before,” Diep noted.

Avoiding Direct Conversations About Money

“Avoiding talking about money is a big mistake,” Diep said. “With a group, you’ll have people who have different spending styles or budgets. I have friends who love to have every meal out at bougie restaurants while they travel, while I have friends who can’t spend that kind of money. Not discussing it upfront will lead to awkward or uncomfortable moments on the trip, which really sucks when everyone’s already spending their hard-earned money to be there and have a good time.”

Before embarking on your trip, find out everyone’s budgeting priorities and preferences. Choose accommodations and meal options accordingly, and keep people’s financial needs in mind throughout the trip ― for instance, when you’re figuring out how to split a dinner bill after some people had multiple courses and drinks while others just ordered salad.

“Ask everyone how much they are looking to spend for the entire trip, including food and activities,” said Phil Dengler, a co-founder of travel website The Vacationer . “Traveling with people who have a high budget is easy, but you will have to do a little more work if you are with more frugal people. If your budget is limited, figure out any potential splurges that will make everyone more comfortable.”

Not Making Reservations

“Not having a plan is the biggest mistake you can make on a group trip,” said Madison Pietrowski, the director of brand for the U.S. at the travel platform GetYourGuide . “Book your activities in advance! It’s important to have a plan for each day when dealing with a large group, or else you’ll feel like you’re herding cats.”

She recommended booking at least one or two planned activities for each day, but also familiarizing yourself with the cancellation policies in case you need to make changes. Keep the group informed of the proposed itinerary so that everyone has a chance to give their input.

“Plan interactive experiences that everyone will enjoy,” Pietrowski added. “Does your group like to cook and eat? Are they adventurous? Into history? Personally, I’d suggest a cooking class because it’ll get the whole group involved and take one lunch or dinner reservation off your plate.”

At the very least, snag a few meal reservations because it’s more difficult for a large party to get a table at a restaurant as walk-ins.

“When I am traveling with groups larger than four, I usually book dinner reservations for each night just so we have something,” Dengler said. “I’ll share the reservations with the group, as well as a few alternative options, and adjust as needed.”

Overloading Your Itinerary

While structure and advanced planning are important for group trips, resist the urge to go overboard with your schedule.

“Planners often go in thinking they need to sort events for every day and every hour, otherwise the trip will be a bust,” said Suzie Palma, another co-founder of Let’s Jetty. “But the reality is, your group might want time to hang back and catch up with each other.”

She recommended giving people the ability to opt out of certain structured activities and leaving free time for rest. It’s natural to get carried away by the excitement of exploring a new place, but you don’t want everyone to feel exhausted and cranky by the end of the day.

“Plan for breaks in between activities within your schedule, so that everyone has a little bit of downtime and can get a snack or just relax,” Pietrowski said. “Also, think about the weather and the types of activities you’re booking. If you’re traveling somewhere that will have hot temperatures, consider booking a museum activity or other indoor tours when the time of day gets very hot. Save the outdoor activities for the early mornings or evenings.”

Expecting Everyone To Spend The Whole Time Together

“It’s a group trip. You’re going to be spending the bulk of the time together, so it’s OK if groups split off or people want to do their own things for a bit,” Diep said. “It’s everyone’s vacation. Just make sure to establish the main things that people are going to be doing together. You will still have plenty of quality time together!”

Just as it’s helpful to build in unstructured time for people to rest, the group can also benefit from a little space here and there. Many folks are introverts who need a occasional time apart from others, or you might have someone in your group with a very niche travel goal that they’d like to pursue on their own.

“While group activities are essential for bonding and shared experiences, it’s also important to respect each other’s need for personal space and downtime,” said Lisa Chen, the CEO of the company ToursByLocals . “Building in some free time or optional activities allows individuals to pursue their interests independently and recharge as needed.”

Letting 1 Person Organize Everything

Leaders tend to naturally emerge in group settings, but that doesn’t mean they should be forced to do all the heavy lifting in preparing for the trip.

“Help out your planner friend where you can,” Diep advised. “Most of the time, the responsibilities fall on one or two people, and it’s a ton of work. Volunteering to do research or book something goes a long way in saving them time or stress.”

In addition to offering help, she also emphasized the importance of acknowledging the main organizers. Consider buying them a thank-you drink to recognize their hard work.

“And on the flip side, as an organizer, sometimes you think you have to do it all, and that will lead to stress and exhaustion,” Diep added. “Don’t be afraid to delegate or ask for help! Sometimes it’s not poorly intentioned; others who don’t typically organize or plan trips may not realize how much you have to do, but when asked are willing to help.”

Not Communicating Expectations

“A common mistake made when planning a group trip is not discussing expectations for the trip,” said travel guide Tonia Hope . “There are many important aspects that people planning on going on a group trip don’t discuss before booking and planning that really can worsen the experience.”

In addition to budgetary and dietary restrictions, she recommended asking your travel companions what type of travelers they are ― do they prefer lounging by the water and eating at hotel restaurants at an all-inclusive resort, or do they want to explore different neighborhoods and fill the itinerary with lots of activities? Just because someone is a good friend of yours doesn’t mean that you can assume your travel preferences and styles are fully aligned.

“Some people may want to indulge in outdoor adventures, while others may want to explore the foodie scene or catch up on rest and relaxation,” noted Nicole Martinez, another co-founder of Let’s Jetty. “Properly setting these expectations ahead of time will allow everyone to plan for these activities together or enjoy on their own terms. Either way, asking this question upfront will allow the group to collaborate on a vacation everyone can enjoy.”

Going Without A Strategy For Splitting Expenses

“Shared costs are at the heart of most fallouts and arguments during group trips,” said Laura Lindsay, a travel trends expert at Skyscanner. “Forgotten pledges to pay you back later can quickly descend into resentment. It’s best to avoid any issues from the offset.”

She recommended having everyone in the group download the same budgeting app before the trip so that people can stay on top of shared expenses in real time. Splitwise is a popular option for keeping track of who paid for what and who owes whom.

“An interesting strategy we’ve also heard from our users is, when going out in large groups, put food and alcohol on separate tabs,” Diep shared. “They say it makes it easier to split because typically people are sharing food pretty equally, but how much people drink varies a lot and can be a significant portion of the bill.”

Not Being Flexible

“Flexibility is key to accommodating the diverse needs and preferences of group members,” Chen said. “Encourage travelers to remain open to changes in plans or spontaneous opportunities that arise during the trip.”

Some of the most memorable travel experiences come from unplanned moments during the less structured parts of the itinerary. Fluidity and adaptability are key to taking advantage of exciting opportunities, rolling with the punches when unexpected changes arise, and enjoying a vacation to the fullest.

“Everyone going on a group trip should be open-minded, flexible and willing to compromise,” Diep echoed. “Even with the best planned itineraries, things come up. With a group of people, if everyone’s willing to give and take here and there, usually everyone ends up happy. And sometimes you’ll find that you had a great experience doing something you might not normally have done!”

At the end of the day, the most helpful thing you can do on a group trip is to go into it with a positive attitude and teamwork perspective.

“Things happen, conflicts can arise, but don’t [let] it ruin a whole trip if they do!” Diep said. “Be direct, have a conversation and talk through it. Remember you’re there to spend time together and have a good time! And most likely, these experiences end up being funny, memorable stories later.”

But when it's unfolded, set the timer and head off to seek out as many of a certain item as you can find in the extra-large scene (bells, flags, cats, apples, etc.), challenging players on their memory and matching skills. It's the perfect family board game, because the rounds are quick by design, it's easy to learn, and the game is cooperative , so if one player wins, everyone wins! There's also a Marvel Eye Found It board game with a smaller board. Ages 3+

By the time kids are 5 years old, they're more curious about science and the world around them.
