Holland America Line will launch a 42-day cruise across the Atlantic Ocean and around Europe and the Middle East from Florida next year, inspired by a journey the cruise line took nearly 100 years ago.
The “42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage” cruise will sail from Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 9, 2024, and visit 16 different ports before heading back to Florida, according to the cruise company . The sailing is part of the company’s Legendary Voyages, which are longer cruises ranging from 25 to 59 days.
Travelers who board the company’s Volendam ship will first sail to the Azores before heading over to Tangier, Morocco, and on to Italy and Greece where they will have the opportunity to visit popular cities like Florence, Rome, and Athens. The cruise will then head down to Israel where guests can explore Tel Aviv and Jerusalem before making its way to Egypt and Tunisia.
On its way back to Florida, passengers will stop in Gibraltar, Spain, and Casablanca.
“Holland America Line was one of the first companies to feature cruise vacations that went beyond a transatlantic crossing, and today we’re continuing to innovate our itineraries by offering memorable voyages like this ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic passage sailing,” Beth Bodensteiner, the chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, said in a statement. “Since introducing this new Legendary category of cruises that offer an in-depth focus on one region, they’ve been very popular. We’re excited to add a longer voyage that makes it easy to explore the Med in depth without a long-haul flight.”
Holland America said the cruise is inspired by a trip the company took in 1925, which departed from New York City on the Rotterdam IV and sailed to several of the same ports next year’s cruise will visit.
Last year, Holland America celebrated its 150th anniversary with a series of heritage cruises , including a special transatlantic cruise that recreated the company’s first sailing by crossing the Atlantic Ocean before the company was even incorporated.
The company is also planning an epic 133-day pole-to-pole Grand Voyage in 2025, which will sail as far south as Antarctica and as far north as the Arctic Circle off the coast of Norway.

HAL-Holland America's 42-day Atlantic, Europe and Middle East voyage roundtrip from Florida USA
HAL-Holland America Line is set to introduce a 42-day cruise exploring the Atlantic Ocean and various destinations across Europe and the Middle East.
Inspired by a journey undertaken by the cruise line nearly a century ago, this extraordinary voyage, known as the "42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage" cruise, will depart from Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida USA) on November 9th, 2024. Over the course of the trip, travelers aboard the Volendam ship will have the opportunity to visit 16 different ports before returning back to the USA. This cruise is part of the company's Legendary Voyages, offering longer itineraries ranging from 25 to 59 days.
The journey will commence by sailing to the Azores, then proceeding to Tangier Morocco , and onwards to Italy and Greece, where passengers can explore renowned cities like Florence/from Livorno , Rome/from Civitavecchia and Athens/from Piraeus . The itinerary continues southward to Israel, allowing guests to visit Tel Aviv-Haifa and Ashdod-Jerusalem , and later includes stops in Egypt and Tunisia.
As the cruise returns back to Florida, passengers will have the chance to explore Gibraltar , Spain, and Casablanca . This luxurious European voyage pays homage to a similar trip undertaken by the company in 1925, which also visited several of the same ports.
In 2022, HAL celebrated its 150th anniversary by organizing heritage cruises, including a special transatlantic cruise that replicated the company's inaugural sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, even before its official incorporation.
Looking ahead, HAL has plans for an impressive 133-day Grand Voyage in 2025, taking travelers on an epic pole-to-pole journey that will reach as far south as Antarctica and as far north as the Arctic Circle off the coast of Norway.

Holland America Line Launches Onboard Credit Offer For AARP Members
Cruise sails roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale to nine countries around the Mediterranean
Seattle, Wash., July 25, 2023 —Holland America Line is adding another Legendary Voyage to its diverse roster of lengthier cruises from convenient gateways. The “ 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage ” aboard Volendam departing Nov. 9, 2024, was inspired by a voyage the cruise line operated nearly 100 years ago. Perfectly designed for today’s traveler, the 2024 departure sails roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, allowing guests to experience 16 different ports across nine countries, all without international air.
The original voyage that provided the vision for the “ 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage ” departed New York City Feb. 4, 1925, aboard Rotterdam IV and carried just 550 guests across the Atlantic Ocean to explore many of the same ports. The 2024 cruise follows in the footsteps of the 1925 journey, visiting Portugal, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, Gibraltar (United Kingdom) and Spain.
“Holland America Line was one of the first companies to feature cruise vacations that went beyond a transatlantic crossing, and today we’re continuing to innovate our itineraries by offering memorable voyages like this ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic passage sailing,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer, Holland America Line. “Since introducing this new Legendary category of cruises that offer an in-depth focus on one region, they’ve been very popular. We’re excited to add a longer voyage that makes it easy to explore the Med in depth without a long-haul flight.”
The “ 42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage ” route first visits Horta and Ponta Delgada in the Azores after crossing the Atlantic Ocean. A call at Tangier, Morocco, is followed by overnight visits to both Livorno and Civitavecchia, Italy. From Livorno, guests can explore Florence or Pisa, while Rome is easily accessed from Civitavecchia. Volendam then makes way to Naples, Italy, and Catania, Sicily, before Piraeus (Athens), Greece.
Guests will then explore the Holy Land at Haifa (Tel Aviv) and Ashdod (Jerusalem), Israel, followed by Port Said and Alexandria (Cairo), in Egypt. The final ports on the voyage include La Goulette (Tunis), Tunisia; Gibraltar; Cadiz (Seville), Spain: and Casablanca, Morocco. The cruise concludes Dec. 21 at Fort Lauderdale.
What is a ‘Legendary Voyage’? These lengthier cruises, which range from 25 to 59 days, combine the ceremony of Holland America Line’s Grand Voyages while focusing on a singular region. They visit some of the most unique ports while offering guests an in-depth exploration. Shipboard programming is specially curated to share insights into the history and culture of the destinations visited.
Most of Holland America Line’s Legendary Voyages sail roundtrip or to/from a North American homeport, allowing travelers to see the world from their doorstep with a convenient domestic flight and easy embarkation. The itineraries are offered on a variety of the line’s perfectly sized ships where guests enjoy the “best of” Grand Voyages on-board programming such as iconic theme parties, memorable sailaways and classic cruise activities to further enhance the experience.

What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise 2024 (full packing list included)
Sharing is caring!
If you’re planning a Caribbean cruise in 2024, you’re probably wondering what to pack for your cruise vacation. You’ll want to be prepared for fun sea days , beautiful days in port and elegant evenings on the cruise ship.
Knowing what to wear and what outfits to pack , as well as what must-have items to bring on your Caribbean Cruise is essential. I’ve also included a free printable cruise packing list, which you can print and personalize.
What to Bring on a Caribbean Cruise
Some people will counsel you to pack light on a cruise , and while you don’t want to overpack, you need to know that it isn’t easy to pick up extras that you need once on the cruise ship.
It’s important to be prepared with all your cruise essentials, including toiletries, medications, cruise accessories and shoes (yes, many people forget their formal night shoes !!).
In this post, we go over:
- What clothes to pack for a Caribbean cruise (his & hers)
- Must have items for a Caribbean cruise
- Caribbean cruise packing list
- How to pack for your cruise

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise
If you’re taking a 7 day Caribbean Cruise, you’ll need outfits for your sea days on the cruise ship, and other days in port. You’ll also need to plan for evening wear on your cruise .
It’s a good idea to check your cruise line’s dress codes. However, in most cases a 7 day cruise will include 2 Formal, Dress Your Best or Chic Evenings . The other evenings will be casual or smart casual dress.
If your cruise is 5 nights or less, you’ll only need one formal attire outfit or there may not be a formal evening at all. However if your cruise is 10 nights or longer, you can expect an extra chic night. Keep in mind that cruise line dress codes apply in the main dining room, and not the buffet and casual restaurants.
Suggested: What To Wear on a Cruise Vacation (daywear, evening, formal nights)
Clothes to Bring on a Caribbean Cruise
This cruise outfit packing list will be useful for any warm weather cruise, including Bahamas and Bermuda cruises .
Since the Caribbean weather is quite warm most of the year, plan on light clothing during the day, like shorts and a t-shirts or tank top, or a light sundress. Winter months (January, February, March) tend to be a little bit cooler, so plan accordingly.

53 Must-Haves to Pack for your Caribbean Cruise
Here’s a list of the most essential items to pack for your cruise . I’ve included both cruise accessories that will be useful for any cruise, as well as things to bring that are specific for your Caribbean Cruise.
1. Passport or Government Issued ID
The most important things to pack for your cruise to the Caribbean is your passport and government ID. Make sure to have this on you, and do not pack it in your checked luggage . If this happens, there’s a good chance that you won’t be able to get it back on time to be able to board your cruise.
2. Cruise and Travel Documents
Be sure to have your cruise documents, as well as flight and hotel reservations and other travel documents you might need. It’s a good idea to print cruise boarding passes, as some cruise lines still suggest this.
Your cruise documents may also be available on the cruise line app.
3. Passport Travel Wallet holder
It’s a good idea to keep your passport in a passport wallet holder . This one is so practical and will ensure that you don’t make the mistake of packing your passport in your luggage.
You’ll have place for passports, airplane boarding passes, foreign currency, printed documents and other travel essentials.
Recommended: Passport travel wallet (check price & 3500+ 4.5* Amazon reviews)
4. Cruise Carry-on Bag
While you’ll check your luggage at the cruise terminal, you’ll want to have a cruise carry on bag with all you need for embarkation day . In here, you can keep your essentials like a change of clothes, a bathing suit and cover up, and medications and valuable.
A small suitcase , small duffel bag or backpack all make great cruise carry-on bags.
Here’s full cruise carry on packing list , and I will include it at the bottom of this post as well.
5. Non-surge Protected Power Bar
It’s surprising, but most cruise ship cabins have only 2 electric plugs. If you’re bringing electronic items like phones, pads, speakers, go-pros and anything else, you’ll really want more plugs.
Very important – Cruise lines won’t allow you to bring a regular surge-protected power bar from home and it will be confiscated . It’s very important to have a non-surge protected one that is “cruise approved”.
This NEW non-surge power cube includes 3 electric outlets and UBC-A and USB-A outlets. This spacesaving power cube allows cruisers to easily charge all devices.
A lanyard holds your cruise card both on the ship and in port, keeping your hands free. It’s one of the most useful items to bring on a cruise.
Bonus – you can actually pick your own design or theme, which makes it a fun item to take on a cruise vacation!
Recommended: Cruise lanyards
8. Cruise Luggage Tag Holders
Your cruise luggage tags will need to be printed, then folded and stapled and put on your luggage. While this is perfectly fine, the paper can be flimsy and it takes time to do this the morning of your cruise.
Luggage tag holders are reusable, and truly one of the best cruise accessories you’ll ever have. They’re available for every cruise line (in wide or long sizes).
Recommended: Plastic Sleeve luggage tags (check link for specific cruiseline options)
9. Medication (prescription & over the counter)
Make sure to pack both prescription and over the counter medications. It’s a good idea to pack a small pharmaceutical bag or DIY first aid kit with bandaids and other useful items.
For a complete list of items to pack in your cruise first aid kit, please see this post: 31 Cruise First Aid Kit Essentials To Bring on Your Cruise
10. Reef safe Sunscreen
One item not to forget to pack for your Caribbean cruise is sunscreen. The sun is much more intense on the cruise ship, especially when at sea.
Unfortunately, my husband learned his lesson the hard way 😉
Recommended: Banana Boat Reef safe sunscreen – SPF 50 (see almost 4000 reviews on Amazon)
11. Lip balm with SPF
I always pack several lip balms when we go on a cruise, for each member of the family – you don’t want to forget these. Trust me – lips can burn and swell up, which isn’t pretty or comfortable.
Recommended: Banana Boat Lip Balm SPF 50
12. Aloe Vera – After Sun Care
If you do get a bit too much Caribbean sun, you’ll be happy to have non-sticky aloe vera after-sun gel that will ease a sunburn. While sold on the cruise ship, it will be more expensive than planning ahead.
Recommended: Organic Aloe Vera Gel (see almost 50,000 amazing Amazon reviews)
13. Polarized Sunglasses
This selection of fashionable polarized sunglasses for men and women on Amazon is so reasonable. If you need some sunglasses to bring along on your Caribbean Cruise, check out the awesome styles.
Recommended: Polarized sunglasses (see awesome choice of fashion brands here)
13. Insect Repellent
While you’re unlikely to need mosquito or bug spray if you stay near the port or head to a beach, you’ll need it for some shore excursions . If you’re heading into the forest, like going zip-lining or river tubing, bring along insect repellent.
Recommended: Deep Woods Insect Repellant (see reviews here)
15. Beach Bag
Bring along a good quality waterproof, zippered beach bag that can hold all your towels, sunscreen, water bottles etc. This is the bag we use, and it actually doubles as our carry on bag for Caribbean cruises. You can find more beach and tote bags for all your needs in this post .
Recommended: Large zippered nautical beach bag
16. Waterproof Phone Case
It’s a good idea to bring a waterproof phone case on your cruise, for sea days by the pool as well as port days by the beach. This one includes the ability to use the touch screen as well.
Recommended: Waterproof Phone Case with cruise lanyard
17. Seabands
Make sure to have some motion sickness remedies, as it’s always possible to be affected by some seasickness during your cruise .
Seabands are a practical, natural remedy for many experienced cruisers.
Recommended: Seabands (see both adult and children’s sizes on Amazon)

Bring along some Bonine or other seasickness medication, in case you feel some motion due to rough seas. It’s handy to have just in case.
Recommended: Bonine seasickness tablets
19. Ginger Candies
Ginger candies are a natural way to ease an upset stomach or mild motion sickness on a cruise . They’re great on tenders and small boat excursions as well.
Recommended: Tummydrops ginger candies
20. Snorkel and Mask
If you’re planning on heading to the beach or boat excursion, you’ll want to bring your own snorkel set on your cruise. It can be used again and again, and will likely be one of your favorite things ever!
Recommended: Check out the Amazon reviews for this full face mask style snorkel set (to see why people are loving it)
21. Towel Clips
While pool and beach towels are provided by the cruise line, so no need to pack these, they just won’t stay put without towel clips . Caribbean cruises are breezy!
Beach and pool towel clips are available in different styles (flamingo, margaritas, flip flops) are a practical and fun item to pack for your cruise.
22. Towel Bands
Save space with these cute and practical towel bands , a good alternative to towel clips.
Recommended: Towel bands (see variety of fun styles)
23. Refillable Water Bottles
I love these space-saving roll-able and collapsible water bottles. While obviously convenient on the cruise ship, more than that I love how they don’t take room in my luggage or beach bag when not being used.
Recommended: Collapsible 20 ounce water bottles
23. Swimsuit Cover Up
A pretty bathing suit cover up is a must-have cruise wear for a Caribbean cruise. You may want to bring a couple for both cruise ship and beach days.
Recommended: Swimsuit cover up (see different colors on Amazon)
24. Water Shoes
These lightweight water shoes are comfortable and easy to pack for your cruise. Some Caribbean beaches, even cruise line private islands, can be grainy or rocky, so it’s a good idea to pack a pair for everyone in the family.
Recommended: Water shoes/Water socks (see different color choices on Amazon)
25. Binoculars
Keep your eye out for flying fish, whales and dolphins. Although more common on Alaskan cruises , it’s actually possible to see marine life during your Caribbean cruise. However, you’ll want to have binoculars handy whether you’re watching from the Lido deck or your balcony.
26. Waterproof Dry Bag
This waterproof dry bag is perfect for cruise shore excursion days. This best-selling Amazon item comes in a several sizes and colors.
Recommended: Floating waterproof dry bag (verify price on Amazon)
27. Portable Lock-box Safe
Cruisers often wonder where they can put valuables and identification when on excursions or hanging out on the beach. This useful item has become one of the most popular cruise accessories.
Recommended: Portable lock box safe (check reviews on Amazon)
28. Portable Phone Charger
While a cruise power bar is important to have, a portable charger is super practical.
We used this one on our last cruise to charge two phones at a time! It was awesome and long lasting!
While not a true cruise must-have, a Go-Pro is a great way to get amazing video footage on your vacation, on active excursions and in the ocean (it goes underwater). If you’re looking for a new toy and want to create a vacation video or Vlog, you’ll love the image quality of the new Go Pro 9.
You can also pick up a few accessories made specifically for a Go Pro that will be helpful.
Recommended: Go Pro 9 (see price & reviews on Amazon)
Useful Cruise Accessories
30. hanging “over the door” organizer.
Cruisers swear by the hanging organizer for toiletries and other essentials on a cruise. This can be a great way to keep your cruise cabin organized .
Recommended: Hanging cabin organizer (see Amazon link for price & details)
31. Magnet Hooks
I personally recommend these magnetic cabin hooks. When we used them in our cabin on our last cruise, they freed up space in the closet (and on chairs). The small hooks are “heavy duty” so they can hold the weight of a backpack or sweatshirt, but also are a good place to store sunhats and hang bathing suits to dry.
Recommended: 6 pack Magnetic Hooks
32. Cruise Approved Power Bar or Cube
This multi outlet cube is a real space saver and absolute essential for cruising and traveling. In contrast to larger power bars, this “cube” is perfect if you’re trying to pack light for a cruise (as it’s so small). Yet it still has 3 electric outlets and 3 USB Ports!!
Tip: Cruise lines don’t allow power bars from home with extension cords, so make sure to pack one like this which is “cruise approved”.
Recommended: Cruise power cube (check price here on Amazon)
33. Hanging Toiletry Bag
This hanging toiletry bag and organizer makes it so easy to unpack the necessities on a cruise!
Recommended: Hanging toiletry bag (over 14000 5* ratings on Amazon)
34. Poo-Pourri Bathroom Spray
This one is well loved and not talked about that often. However, Poo-pourri one of the most popular Amazon cruise products being ordered.
35. Cabin Alarm Clock
If you like to know the time during the night or don’t want to rely on your cell phone, consider a simple travel battery operated clock. A lot of cruisers swear this is one of their favorite cruise accessories.
36. Motion Sensor Nightlight
This portable motion sensor nightlight is so practical and makes a great gift for cruisers . This is especially handy for inside cabins, which will be pitch black when the lights are off.
Recommended: Battery operated nighlight
37. Portable Fan
Cruise cabins can get stuffy. This small fan is battery operated, but rechargeable, and gets great reviews on Amazon.
38. Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are fabulous for cruises. Consider getting at least 2 sets with different sizes, and color code to keep better organized.
Recommended: 5 star rated Packing Cubes

Extra Items to Pack for Your Cruise
Many cruise lines allow you to bring 1 bottle of wine per adult , without charge. You can place them in your carry on luggage. Please check your cruise line policy before you go.

Recommended: Thermal Coffee Mug (see color options and 5 * reviews on Amazon)
41. Toiletries
Pack your favorite toiletries . This includes basic items such toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream etc. You may also want to pack perfume, moisturizers and other personal items.
42. Wrinkle Release Spray
You might find that your cruise clothing gets a bit wrinkled as you unpack. Cruise cabins won’t have irons, as they’re a fire hazard – and you can’t bring steamers either.
So, wrinkle release spray is a good way to get wrinkles out of your cruise outfits .
Recommended: Downy Wrinkle Release (travel size)
43. Tide-to-Go Stain Remover Stick
An essential item to have when cruising and traveling is a Tide To Go Stain remover stick. Inevitably you’ll spill coffee or wine, or get pen marks on white jeans (me!!) and a little stain remover will save your cruise outfits!
Recommended: Tide To Go Stain Remover Stick
44. Individual Hand Sanitizer Wipes
Keep individual hand sanitizer wipes on hand for shore excursions and even when on a flight heading to your cruise ship.
45. Mesh Laundry Bag
46. Highlighter & Post it Notes
While your cruise line will have an app to use, you may also like to look at the print version of the daily planner. A highlighter can help to mark off the activities you want to do.
Post it’s are also great to leave a note for your cabin steward .
47. Crew Thank You Cards
If you’d like a place to leave an additional tip or to write a note to your favorite crew members, these thank you cards are perfect.
Recommended: Crew thank you cards
48. Electronics Organizer Bag
Keep all your chargers, wires and cables together in a small electronics organizer bag .
Recommended: Electronics accessory organizer bag (see details & Amazon reviews)
49. Travel blowdryer
A small blowdryer will be provided in your cruise cabin. However the quality will be similar to that of a hotel. If that’s not powerful enough for you, consider bringing a small quality blowdryer.
This compact hairdryer by BabyLliss Pro works almost as well as my large salon quality dryer, and is perfect to bring along on a cruise.
Recommended: BaByLiss Pro travel hairdryer (see over 3000 Amazon reviews)
How to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise
How to pack for your cruise is almost as important as what to pack for your cruise! Here are a few tips.
- Stack and roll a few similar items together and roll tightly

- Use packing cubes to keep organized and compress items
These packing accessories will help keep your cruise outfits organized and less wrinkled
50. packing cubes.
While there are pros and cons to packing cubes , they are a very popular travel product for cruises.
Packing cube tips – consider buying at least 2 sets, in different colors. It helps to keep everything organized for each member of the family. As well, take a look at the different sizes available. We found large and medium to be the most useful for most of out clothing.
Recommended: Packing cubes (see colors & set options here on Amazon)
51. Compression Packing Cubes
Keep organized and fit more into your luggage with compression packing cubes. I love traditional packing cubes (above), and found them very helpful on our last cruise.
I’ll give these compression cubes a try when I cruise again, however if you’ve used them, please let me know and share your review in the comments.
Recommended: Compression packing cube set (see reviews & options)
53. Garment Bag
Along with a good suitcase and carry on bag, a garment bag is a must-have if you’re bringing dressy clothes or formal wear on your cruise .
You’ll almost guarantee that your cocktail dresses, dress shirts and suits and suits will be wrinkle free !

Goodness! You pack about 3 -4 times more clothes than than I do. Lots of great ideas though. Keep up the good work.
Lol, I know I really do bring a lot. Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your own experiences!
We cruise for 4 or 5 weeks at a time so use compression packing cubes to save space. I’ve managed to pack enough for 4 weeks ( with some laundry done) in a large and medium pack each. The saved space is then used for sunscreen, toiletries, shoes and all the kit required by my disabled husband. Travelling light isn’t an option for us.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Ileana, we want to thank you for your YouTube posts, it helped us get through the covid lock down, they helped us dream about our next cruise . Many of the ideas you share I have done myself and some others I will be using for our future cruise. Love your information and your energy. We will continue to watch and learn.
Thanks so much!
This blog is super helpful, especially for new cruisers!

P&O Cruises reveals 40-night Caribbean sailing
Cruise calls at la coruña; madeira; st kitts; guadeloupe; st lucia; grenada; st vincent; barbados and more..
A Caribbean cruise and Portugal and Canary Islands sailing on P&O Cruises ’ Aurora, designed exclusively for adults, are now on sale.
Departing February 20, 2022, Aurora will sailing from, and return to Southampton, in a 40-night itinerary that explores the Caribbean.
Prices start at £2,149 per person with 16 ports of call including La Coruña; Madeira; St Kitts; Guadeloupe; St Lucia; Grenada; St Vincent; Barbados; Bonaire; Curaçao; Aruba; Dominica; Tortola; St Maarten; Antigua and Tenerife.
Aurora will return to Roseau, Dominica for the first time in almost a decade and will visit Aruba and Guadeloupe for the first time in four years.
Aurora will also visit Portugal and the Canary Islands for 12 nights, departing April 1, 2022, with inside cabins from £599 per person. Departing from and returning to Southampton, ports of call are La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Lisbon.
A third guest in the same cabin can travel from £199 on both new Aurora holidays. Guests also have the opportunity to spread the cost monthly at no additional cost if desired.
Aurora will resume the already published itinerary April 13, 2022, sailing to the Mediterranean, before undertaking World Cruise 2023. A new World Cruise for 2024 will be announced later this year.
P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said: “The Caribbean and Portugal and Canary Islands are hugely popular with P&O Cruises guests so we’re delighted to be giving more options to enjoy some winter sun in early 2022 and on Aurora, our ship exclusively for adults.
“Due to the global travel limitations still in place and the complex logistics involved in a world cruise, many months in advance, sadly it is just not possible to continue to offer this in 2022. We’re extremely sorry as we know how much our guests look forward to this trip of a lifetime. As an alternative, booking is open for our 2023 World Cruise and we’ll be releasing details of our 2024 World Cruise later this year.”

Carnival, Royal Caribbean and more change cruise itineraries amid Hurricane Ernesto
Cruise lines are changing itineraries in an effort to avoid Hurricane Ernesto . The storm brought heavy rain and wind to Puerto Rico Wednesday, leaving close to half the island without power and prompting flash flood warnings. The Virgin Islands also felt the impacts.
Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Pride ship, which left from Baltimore for a Bermuda cruise on Sunday, moved its visit to the island up by one day, arriving on Tuesday and leaving on Thursday, the cruise line said.
Carnival Magic skipped a planned stop in San Juan on Wednesday and will make an additional stop in Nassau in the Bahamas on Friday. The ship left Miami on Sunday for an Eastern Caribbean cruise.
“As the safety of our guests and crew is our priority, we will continue to watch the storm and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard and the local port authorities to provide timely updates as more information becomes available,” the cruise line said in a news release .
Norwegian Cruise Line rerouted Eastern Caribbean cruises on its Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Breakaway ships to the Western Caribbean, according to a spokesperson. The ships departed from Miami on Monday and Sunday, respectively.
Their new itineraries include Roatan in Honduras, Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico and Harvest Caye in Belize (Sky will also stop in Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios in Jamaica).
Was your cruise itinerary changed?: Here's what to do next
Norwegian Joy , which left for a Bermuda cruise from New York on Sunday, arrived at the island on Tuesday, one day ahead of schedule. While the ship will spend two nights at the Royal Naval Dockyard as planned, it will depart Thursday, a day earlier than planned.
“The safety and security of our guests, crew and the communities we visit is a top priority,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
Royal Caribbean International’s Rhapsody of the Seas will make planned stops on its Southern Caribbean cruise in a different order, but no ports were canceled, according to a spokesperson for the line’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group . The ship departed from San Juan on Sunday.
Icon of the Seas , which departed from Miami on Saturday, is sailing a Western Caribbean itinerary rather than an Eastern Caribbean cruise as planned. Stops include Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan.
Symphony of the Seas, which left from Bayonne, New Jersey , for an Eastern Caribbean cruise on Friday, will also visit Nassau rather than Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.

I went to Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas. It wasn't for me, but I can see why cruise-goers love it.
- Royal Caribbean has a private island in the Bahamas called Perfect Day at CocoCay.
- The island gives cruise guests a combination of thrilling activities and relaxing beaches.
- I went for the first time in 2022. While I found it fun, I longed for a more authentic port stop.
Perfect Day at CocoCay is Royal Caribbean's 125-acre private island in the Bahamas. It's filled with thrilling adventures and relaxing beaches for vacationers. Here, you'll find overwater cabanas, quiet places to chill, and shorelines bumping party music. Adrenaline seekers will find gigantic waterslides, zip lines, and hot air balloon rides.
I went to CocoCay during my first cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in May 2022. It felt like an extension of the ship, but I longed for a more authentic Bahamian experience.
Welcome to Perfect Day at CocoCay: Royal Caribbean's 125-acre private island in the Bahamas. It's filled with thrilling adventures and relaxing beaches for vacationers.
Royal Caribbean isn't the only cruise line with a private island in the Bahamas. Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, and Princess Cruises each have their own Bahamian paradise, according to Cruise Critic .
CocoCay is only accessible to cruisers on board Royal Caribbean ships.
Many Royal Caribbean cruise itineraries include a stop here.
CocoCay was the final stop of a seven-night cruise starting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The ship also stopped in Roatán, Honduras, and Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico.
Admiral Cruises, a company Royal Caribbean acquired in 1988, leased the island until 2050 in 1985, according to Royal Caribbean . In 2019, the island got a $250 million makeover .
The only people who live on CocoCay are Royal Caribbean employees, according to the cruise line.
Two Royal Caribbean ships can dock at CocoCay at the same time. Here's what it's like to visit.
As Royal Caribbean guests step onto the island, a band greets them with Caribbean tunes.
I thought the band set the relaxed, Caribbean vibe as I walked off the dock.
Most attractions on the island are complimentary to cruise guests, including the food and many of the pools and beaches.
Guests could munch on burgers, hot dogs, salads, and cookies on the island.
But the exciting features tend to cost extra, like the waterpark.
Other excursions like zip-lining, snorkeling, and hot-air balloon rides also incurred an additional price.
There are tons of maps and signs to direct guests, as well as three color-coded paths.
Green leads to Chill Island, orange leads to Oasis Lagoon, and blue leads to Thrill Waterpark.
To get around, walk or ride a free tram to different parts of the island.
I thought the tram was a nice touch, but I preferred getting around on foot.
If you're the type of vacationer who just wants to relax, head to Chill Island, which is free to access.
Chill Island is the place for a laid-back day on a lounge chair in the sand. It has the quietest beach on CocoCay, with no music. It's full of umbrellas and chairs, which are all free to use.
You will surely find a comfortable spot.
According to Royal Caribbean , the island has 6,000 lounge chairs and 12,000 umbrellas.
If you want to be extra chill, you can rent a daybed on the beach.
There are also over-the-water cabanas.
These floating cabanas cost $1,000 to rent, according to the cruise line .
Of course, there is a swim-up bar offshore.
Luckily, your cruise ship drink package extends to CocoCay.
For a more active beach day, check out South Beach on the other side of the island.
Here, you'll find plenty of outdoor activities, like basketball, volleyball, and even life-size billiards.
Both beaches offer free amenities that make your day easier and more enjoyable ...
This includes lockers for your change of clothes and valuables.
... like free life vests for your safety.
This could be especially useful for families traveling with kids.
Both beaches have snorkeling shacks where I was able to rent gear for $37.
I went snorkeling at Chill Island and saw some pretty cool fish.
The beaches have several shops that sell souvenirs.
I spotted T-shirts and essentials like sunscreen for sale.
If you prefer the pool over the beach, head to Oasis Lagoon.
It is home to the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, according to the cruise line .
The pool features several inviting coves and upbeat music.
There's also a swim-up bar.
Next to Oasis Lagoon is Splashaway Bay, a water playground for children.
The playground looks just like the Splashaway Bay found on Royal Caribbean ships. It is free for guests.
Next door is Thrill Waterpark, where you'll find the waterslides for the "big kids."
This area of the island hosts all the waterslides and the wave pool. Access can cost up to $140.
Thrill-seekers also gravitate toward the hot air balloon ride, which costs up to $84 per person and reaches 450 feet into the air.
Unfortunately, the winds were too high for the balloon to be used when I visited.
Back on the ship, I quickly took in a panoramic view of CocoCay before departing.
In the distance, I could see some of the other 700 Bahamian islands, and I wondered what it would be like to visit them.
While I had a fun and relaxing day at CocoCay, it felt more like an extension of the cruise ship than a visit to a foreign country.
Since I'm not into the thrills of waterslides and zip lines, I would have rather spent time on a Bahamian island where I could have learned more about the culture.

A day in Grand Cayman: What to do while your cruise is in port
The Cayman Islands are in the western Caribbean Sea, about 275 miles south of Cuba, and are made up of three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. It's a British overseas territory, so you'll likely notice some British influence in the cuisine and language, and in the popularity of sports like cricket.
However, Grand Cayman is mostly an upscale island paradise with tasty food, gorgeous white-sand beaches with clear blue water, and warm weather year-round. It stands out from its island neighbors thanks to singular features like Stingray City, where visitors can interact with the friendly sea creatures, and the Blue Iguana Conservation facility, which protects and breeds the endangered native species found only on Grand Cayman.
For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Grand Cayman is a staple port of call for many operators in the Caribbean . It's also a tender port, so guests are transported to shore in small boats. Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , Holland America , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean all sail here, as do luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises , premium cruise operators Celebrity Cruises and Oceania Cruises, and newer lines, including Virgin Voyages and Explora Journeys.
3 things TPG loves about Grand Cayman
- Some of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean.
- Excellent marine life that you can get up close and personal with.
- Top-quality food.
What we could do without
- The area directly by the port can house tacky souvenir shops, and items are overpriced.
- Most of the shops in George Town are closed on Sundays.
- Some people find tender ports annoying.
- It can be overcrowded due to its popularity among cruises and other visitors.
Grand Cayman fast facts
Grand Cayman is a popular warm-weather getaway destination not too far from the East Coast of the U.S. It boasts generally sunny weather, clear blue waters, and powdery, white-sand beaches, including the world-famous Seven Mile Beach.
Grand Cayman, a British overseas territory, is the largest of the three Cayman Islands and is home to the capital, George Town, where the port is located. George Town is a tender port, and cruise visitors will arrive at one of its three piers/terminals, but all are on the bustling Harbour Drive. The main docking terminal for tenders is the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, which has plenty of taxis, souvenir shops and tourist information centers. The North and South terminals are smaller, but all three piers are within walking distance of George Town's attractions, shops and restaurants.
If you wish to go farther afield to Grand Cayman's attractions like Seven Mile Beach, Stingray City and Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, public buses and taxis are readily available.
Arrival details
Cruise line tender boats will drop off passengers at one of three piers, all of which open onto Harbour Drive. The main docking terminal for tenders is the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, which is in the northern part of George Town. If the port is busy, you might disembark at the smaller North or South terminals, which are south of Royal Watler and across from one other. Still, all three piers are within walking distance of George Town's main attractions.
Language: English is the official language.
Currency: The Cayman Islands uses the Cayman Islands dollar; 1 Cayman Islands dollar is equal to $1.20. U.S. dollars are widely accepted, though, and you can request either currency at some ATMs and banks in George Town. However, if you pay in U.S. dollars, note that you will probably receive change in Cayman Island dollars. If you use a credit card, it will be charged in U.S. dollars.
Time zone: Grand Cayman operates on Eastern Standard Time.
Top things to do in Grand Cayman cruise port
Much of Grand Cayman's interesting historical sites and museums are right near the port in George Town, including the (small) ruins of Fort George, Pedro St. James (the island's oldest building, now a museum), the Cayman Islands National Museum and the National Gallery. Tons of duty-free shops — locally owned, larger chains and luxury brand stores — await visitors.
Popular Grand Cayman excursions
Seven Mile Beach
A highlight of Grand Cayman is its pristine beaches, including the renowned Seven Mile Beach beckoning with its clear waters, about a 10-minute taxi ride from the cruise port. Beyond relaxing on the white sand and swimming in the calm water, visitors can enjoy water sports like jet skiing, kiteboarding, paddleboarding, sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing.
Resort day pass
Reserve a room at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman for the day for access to complimentary nonmotorized water sports and a prime Seven Mile Beach location. The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa and Grand Cayman Marriott Resort are also options, and are situated just a short distance down the beach. You can use Marriott Bonvoy points at either property. If you are an IHG loyalist, the Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa is also on Seven Mile Beach. ResortPass has a day pass for The Grand Caymanian Resort, which has a pool and private beachfront on the North Sound Sea, starting at $70, including a $35 food-and-beverage credit.
Divers can explore several excellent dive sites, including the wreck of Kittiwake, a sunken U.S. submarine. Set up a dive or rent snorkel gear at Eden Rock Diving Center, Divers Supply or Don Foster's Dive Cayman.
Explore nature and wildlife
Grand Cayman is home to several nature and wildlife attractions worth visiting. The most popular is Stingray City, a shallow sandbar in the middle of the Caribbean Sea where friendly stingrays gather and you can gently pet them. Many boat tours to Stingray City will also stop for a snorkel and visit Starfish Beach, a small island with abundant starfish. Some excursions stop in West Bay, where you'll find Hell — a small patch of eerie-looking black limestone. There's also a fire-engine-red post office from which you can send a "postcard from hell." Additionally, Rum Point is a beautiful scenic point near a bioluminescent bay.
Also, the Cayman Turtle Centre is a land-based lagoon where visitors can swim with sea turtles. A guided walking tour of Crystal Caves, on the north side of the island, about a 40-minute drive from the cruise terminal, brings you through the surrounding tropical forest area and three impressive caves with dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. Queen Elizabeth II Royal Botanic Park is also on the north side. It's home to the Blue Iguana Conservation facility, which works to protect the endangered blue iguana that is only found in the Cayman Islands and offers tours to learn about the facility's breeding efforts to preserve this indigenous species.

Best Grand Cayman beaches near the cruise port
This is the main stretch of beach in Grand Cayman, and the most easily accessible from the port. It's too far to walk to, but you can take a short taxi or ride the public bus for just a few bucks.
Once on the beach, if you don't have a booking at a hotel, you must go to either the public beach area (look for "Beach Access" signs) or to one of the beach clubs and restaurants. There are several public beach sections that can be accessed by a path from the road marked "Beach Access." The most popular spots are Public Beach, Governor's Beach, and Cemetery Beach (which has excellent snorkeling). All beaches in Cayman are technically public and you can walk along or lounge on the beach. However, you can't use loungers that belong to a hotel or condo.
Coral Beach
The only remaining beach club is Coral Beach, and it welcomes cruisers for the day. Once you pay an entrance fee (from around $5), you will have access to its swath of Seven Mile Beach, bar and restaurant, restrooms and showers, chair and umbrella rentals, snorkeling gear rentals, cabana rentals, and free Wi-Fi.
If you want to go farther afield, take a car taxi, water taxi or private charter to Rum Point on the island's north coast. Some Stingray City boat tours may stop here. The beach is much smaller than Seven Mile Beach and the sand is not as powdery, but it's more off the beaten path. It also provides facilities like restrooms, restaurants and a small shop. Be sure to get a mudslide from the bar.
Cayman Kai Public Beach
Just a few minutes' drive from Rum Point, Cayman Kai Public Beach is a bit quieter and more secluded (boat tours don't go here). The facilities are basic, with just restrooms, but the water is pristine and excellent for snorkeling.

How to get around Grand Cayman on your own
On foot: Many of Grand Cayman's historic sites and museums, Island Plaza, Bayshore Mall, and Cayman Craft Market are within walking distance of the cruise ship pier. All you have to do is get on your comfy shoes and take the few steps from your terminal to start exploring.
Taxi: Loads of taxis are around the port areas. Some taxis are not metered, but rates will be posted, while other will have meters. Tips between 10% and 15% are expected.
Bus: The public bus (there are 11 routes) is unsurprisingly the most affordable way to get around the island. The main bus station in George Town (known as the District Bus Depot) is by Heroes Square, one of the main landmarks downtown, and walkable from any of the port terminals. All routes start and end there. For shorter journeys, the cost is around $2.50 per person, and trips to the farthest destination can run up to about $10. You can usually flag down a bus on the street by waving.
Bike: Moped and scooter rentals are available. The typical rate for a day is $25, and you must wear a helmet. Driving is on the left side of the street.
Car: Car rentals are available, but you must have a driver's license from your home country. Driving is on the left side of the street.
Grand Cayman restaurants near the cruise port
Grand Cayman's history as a home to Indigenous, African, East Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, British, French, Chinese and other cultures has resulted in a diverse cuisine with ingredients from around the world. You can find many global cuisines done well here, and plenty of upscale restaurants . Freshly caught fish and seafood feature heavily, as do locally grown produce like cassava, coconut and mango. And don't forget "tree chicken," aka green iguana!
Caribbean favorites like cracked and fried conch, goat curry, cassava cake, fish fry, lobster, and whatever fish is freshly caught appear on many menus that serve local cuisine.
With panoramic views of the azure Caribbean Sea, Heritage Kitchen is on the sleepy Boggy Sand Road in West Bay. The food coming out of the adorable, brightly colored cottage includes fresh local seafood like conch fritters, Cayman-style grouper and coconut mahi mahi, while Sundays bring a barbecue. Order your food at the window and enjoy your meal on a picnic table or sit along the sea wall.
Macabuca tiki bar is the place to go for conch in all forms: breaded cracked conch, conch fritters and conch chowder. You'll also find smoked jerk pork rib, Cayman-style lobster tails and blackened mahi, plus beautiful waterfront views at the casual eatery that juts out into the ocean on a rocky slip.
Grand Old House and its sister spot, the Wharf Restaurant, both offer high-end waterfront dining with plenty of fresh fish and seafood. Each evening, patrons gather to watch the massive tarpon fish get fed on the dock.
For the finest fine dining on the island, book a table at Blue by Eric Ripert, the famous chef of Michelin-starred Le Bernardin in New York; Ripert's only restaurant outside of Manhattan is here, inside The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman. Splurge on the seafood-heavy tasting menu and enjoy the best wine selection on the island.
You may want to visit the island's only distillery, Cayman Spirits, which has been making small-batch spirits at a state-of-the-art facility in George Town since 2013. It offers three daily guided tours and tastings. The Seven Fathoms Premium rum is aged in casks in the ocean, where they roll with the current.
Grand Cayman cruise port shopping
Shoppers looking for authentic, handmade souvenirs should head to the Cayman Craft Market, just a five-minute walk from the port, on the corner of Boilers Road and South Church Street. There, you'll find items like handwoven hats, wood carvings, paintings, and jewelry made from local shells and black coral, as well as spices, jams, hot sauces, pickles and other locally made food products. Hair braiding is also done here.
The popular Tortuga Rum has a duty-free shop at the cruise terminal, and many cruisers buy rum cakes as souvenirs. Also close to the port is the Island Plaza shopping mall, which features mostly locally owned shops alongside major international brands. Blackbeard's Liquors and Churchill's Cigars are ideal for any spirits and cigars (including Cuban) you may want. You'll also find Pandora, Swarovski, Ulysse Nardin and other international brands. Cardinal Avenue features luxury shops like Cartier Boutique, Magnum Jewelers, Kirk and La Perfumerie. Artifacts Ltd for antiques and collectibles and La Casa del Habano for Cuban cigars are also nearby.
For serious shopping, head to the opposite side of Harbour Drive by South Terminal to the massive Bayshore Mall, which is filled with luxury shops, both local and international. Kirk Freeport and Kirk Gallery are must stops for luxury items. There is also the day spa Tips n Toes, Timezone, Swatch, Lalique and souvenir shop Grumpy Turtle.

Free things to do in Grand Cayman
About 3 1/2 miles from the cruise port (close to Seven Mile Beach) is Camana Bay, a multiuse town center with shopping, dining, a local artisan market and fun outdoor spaces. Kids will love the two interactive fountains here. The fountain in Jasmine Court is ideal for the smaller ones. Older kids will dig the fountain on the Crescent, with dancing waters and skyward bursts that reach up to 30 feet. A 75-foot-tall observation tower provides panoramic views of Grand Cayman. The stairs up are lined with a stunning mosaic mural.
Bottom line
Grand Cayman has plenty of overcrowded touristy spots and shops and restaurants that feel expensive. However, the Cayman Islands' largest island is a diverse location where you can find historic attractions, some of the world's most beautiful beaches, eclectic cuisine, extensive shopping, and excellent nature and wildlife excursions. Grand Cayman's excellent weather, beautiful landscapes and marine animal encounters make the port a must-see on Caribbean cruises.
Of course, lounging on one of Grand Cayman's white-sand public beaches is free and a fabulous way to spend the day.
