Travel agents key to Go Ahead Tours’ growth strategy for Canadian market

At Go Ahead Tours’ Travel Agent Open House event last night in Toronto, Go Ahead’s Vice President, Canada, Johan Astrom told agents: “From our side we see you as a fundamental part of our success here in Canada, and how we can grow the business. We want to grow a long-term partnership with all of you.”

Go Ahead has always served Canadian (and U.S.) travellers out of its Boston office but in January 2015 the company officially set up shop in Canada. Parent company EF Education First has been around for 52 years with global offices. The company’s headquarters is based in Lucerne, Switzerland with sales and service offices for Go Ahead specifically in Boston and Toronto.

Astrom admitted that “for us, it’s been a bit of a new thing to work with travel agents”. In researching the Canadian market, he said, Go Ahead realized that travel agencies are “where [Canadian travellers] go to book their tours … go for expert knowledge … and go to learn about new destinations.”

Astrom added: “For us, it’s just natural that we want to work with you. We want to partner with you long-term. We are here long-term in Canada and we are here to really invest in the market, and grow the Canadian market. “We want to take a big market share from our competitors, so that’s something we need to work on together.”

Last night’s event was co-hosted by Travelweek’s Xplr VR. “We are so excited to be co-hosting this open house with Go Ahead Tours to help spread the word about VR technology,” said Devin Kinasz, Director of Digital Strategy at Travelweek. “Agents and agency owners need to know how this groundbreaking technology can capture the attention of consumers and help increase sales. It’s fun, innovative and an absolute game changer for the travel industry.”

Go Ahead offers more than 150 tours on seven continents, highlighted by everything from Europe to food & wine tours and special event tours. Tour group sizes capped at between 14 to 35 travellers, “well below the industry average”. There’s also a ratio of 10 paid, one free. Add on excursions are available.

What’s the Go Ahead difference? Kim Jong Un takes his relationship with Putin — and maybe his nuclear program — to a new level

SEOUL, South Korea — Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un are taking their relationship to the next level — one with security implications that go far beyond their two countries.

On Wednesday, during a rare visit to North Korea by the Russian president, the two leaders signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement that included a pledge to “provide mutual assistance in case of aggression.” 

The pact, which comes as Putin is seeking greater assistance from North Korea in his war against Ukraine , has the potential to scramble the balance of power in East Asia, reinforcing growing security ties between the United States and its allies South Korea and Japan , and raising tough questions for China . 

The pact also makes it even more difficult to halt North Korea’s nuclear ambitions , which include ballistic missiles capable of reaching the continental U.S.  

The agreement requires both Russia and North Korea to provide immediate military assistance if the other country is the subject of armed aggression, essentially reviving a 1961 mutual defense agreement that was replaced by a much weaker one in 2000.

“It’s certainly the closest they have been since the Cold War,” said Victor Cha , senior vice president for Asia and Korea chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank in Washington. “They both are claiming that their security is coupled together.”

Putin also said that Russia had not ruled out developing military and technical cooperation with North Korea under the deal.

U.S. officials have told NBC News that in exchange for military assistance in Ukraine, Russia might provide North Korea with the technology it needs to evade missile defenses or launch a nuclear missile from a submarine.

The U.S. and its allies condemned the visit to North Korea by Putin, who continued his travels Thursday in Vietnam.

“This should concern any country that cares about maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, abiding by U.N. Security Council resolutions, and supporting the people of Ukraine,” a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council told NBC News on Wednesday.

South Korea and Japan also expressed concern about the impact of such military-technical cooperation on regional security. Their response to the deepening Russia-North Korea relationship could also have implications outside the region: On Thursday, South Korea’s presidential office said it was considering a change in policy that would allow for the provision of lethal military aid to Ukraine.

The agreement between Russia and North Korea says that if either country is invaded or pushed into a state of war, the other must deploy “all means at its disposal without delay” to provide “military and other assistance,” raising the possibility that a U.S. strike on North Korea could draw a Russian response. 

But what the language means exactly is unclear, Cha said.

“I think what it really means right now is material assistance, as North Korea is now providing to Russia and as Russia is most likely providing to North Korea, in the form of military technology,” he said.

As for whether the two countries would actually go to war for each other, that is hard to say and “would depend on the circumstances,” he said.

More immediately, Putin’s visit to Pyongyang also underscores the failure of international efforts to stop North Korea’s nuclear advances, said John Delury, a China and North Korea expert at Yonsei University in Seoul.

“The United States and the Biden administration need to come to grips with the fact that North Korea policy is not working and hasn’t been working for a very long time,” he said.

“Obviously, we know the North Korean nuclear and missile programs have been moving ahead in leaps and bounds despite all the sanctions,” Delury continued. “And now you’re seeing North Korea make these strategic moves.”

A changing calculus

Russia, which is believed to have the world’s largest nuclear arsenal, had cooperated for decades with the U.S., China and others in trying to prevent North Korea from achieving its goal of becoming a full-fledged nuclear-armed state, participating in six-party talks in the 2000s and supporting an international sanctions regime that began in 1948.

Its calculus changed two years ago with the start of the war in Ukraine, which has drained Moscow’s weapons arsenal.

“Putin needs ammunition from someplace else, and the only place in the world that will give it to him is North Korea,” Cha said.

The U.S. first accused North Korea of supplying Russia with artillery shells in late 2022. The flow of weapons appears to have only accelerated since, with a State Department spokesperson saying this week that Pyongyang had unlawfully transferred dozens of ballistic missiles and more than 11,000 containers of munitions to Moscow in recent months.

North Korea and Russia deny the transfer of arms for use in Ukraine, which would violate United Nations Security Council resolutions that Russia has supported in the past.

Their relationship took a major step forward last September when Kim visited Russia’s far east , where he toured a Russian spaceport and Putin suggested that Russia could help North Korea build satellites.

In March, Russia blocked the continued monitoring of U.N. sanctions against North Korea with a veto in the Security Council, which could help North Korea advance its nuclear weapons program.

The deepening relationship between Russia and North Korea culminated Wednesday with Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, where he was greeted with a lavish ceremony and cheering crowds.

The two leaders also exchanged gifts. Kim received his second Russian-made Aurus limousine — both of which are in violation of Security Council sanctions banning the transfer of luxury items to North Korea — along with a tea set and a naval officer’s dagger. In addition to artwork depicting the Russian leader, Kim also gave Putin two Pungsan hunting dogs , a rare breed native to North Korea. 

The two leaders say they are supporting each other in the face of politically motivated sanctions aimed at maintaining Western hegemony. 

China, which is North Korea’s biggest trading partner and is also growing closer to Russia , has been muted in its response to Putin’s North Korea visit, which put it in a “difficult position,” Cha said. 

Beijing is less ostracized than Pyongyang and Moscow, and is unlikely to risk its relations with other parts of the world to fully join forces with Kim and Putin.

“They care about what Europe thinks,” Cha said, “and North Koreans and Russians together are killing Europeans” in Ukraine.

Putin continued to look for support elsewhere Thursday during his state visit to Vietnam, which tries to be neutral in its foreign policy and has refrained from condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The U.S., which upgraded its relationship with Vietnam last September, has rebuked Vietnam over the visit.

The two-nation Asia tour is a boost for Putin as he finds himself increasingly isolated internationally, Cha said.

“Putin is shaping the environment and conversation in Europe and in East Asia and after Vietnam, he’ll be shaping it in Southeast Asia,” he said.

 “He actually likes this, and for him it shows that Russia is back.”

Ukraine has launched a “mass” drone assault on Russian infrastructure and military targets in the Black Sea, Crimea and southern Russia , officials and Kyiv ’s military said.

Ukraine’s military said its drones struck four oil refineries, radar stations and other military objects in Russia on Friday morning, as Russian officials reported a “mass” drone attack in Krasnodar and claimed to have shot down 70 drones over the Black Sea and Crimea.

It came as South Korea summoned Russia’s ambassador over the new pact signed by Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin during the latter’s visit to North Korea this week, which the Russian president said included a mutual defence clause.

Departing Pyongyang , Mr Putin claimed that Russia supplying weapons to nuclear-armed North Korea will reflect how the West is arming Ukraine.

But with the move having angered Seoul, Mr Putin simultaneously warned South Korea against making a “big mistake” if it decides to aid Ukraine with arms, threatening a “painful” response.

The Ukrainians call it a “barn” tank, a bizarre-looking Russian battlefield vehicle captured by Kyiv’s forces that shows how troops are trying to adapt to the constant threat of drone attacks.

The vehicle, built from a ramshackle, rusted T-62 tank, was modified to have a boxy metal shell as its exterior, a cage at its rear and electronic warfare devices attached to it, soldiers told Reuters after it was captured this week.

They say it was used to shuttle around food, ammunition and troops. Its canopy appeared aimed at protecting against drone attacks, particularly cheaply produced FPV (First-Person-View) drones, which are strapped with a munition and flown to their target by a pilot watching on a screen.

“It was created to defend from FPV drones and (drone bomb) drops. It’s an empty taxi for personnel with electronic warfare as its only defence,” Serhiy Misiura, a lieutenant colonel, said on an official Ukrainian army television station.

Nearly 28 months since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, the use of drones by both sides has become ubiquitous on the battlefield, making it difficult to advance or operate safely.

“They clearly didn’t work hard on it. They hastily put it on and sent the tank to the frontline,” said Dmytro, a Ukrainian soldier who spoke to Reuters about the vehicle in the Donetsk region.

They said the vehicle was captured near Klishchiivka, a village gripped by fighting for months on end near the Russian-occupied city of Bakhmut.

Dmytro said getting in and out carrying equipment was difficult through its tiny hatch. Visibility was very limited and the stench inside was overwhelming.

Aerial drone footage shot by the Ukrainian military and published on June 17 showed the tank being captured in a wooded area along with a Russian crew. Kyiv’s forces then planted a Ukrainian flag on top of it.

Russian guided bomb kills two in eastern Ukraine, prosecutors say

A Russian guided bomb killed two people and wounded three in a residential area of the eastern Ukrainian town of Selydove on Friday, regional prosecutors said.

Five five-storey buildings and six private homes were damaged by the UMPB D-30 bomb in Selydove, about 14 km (nine miles) from the front line, the Donetsk region prosecutors said on the Telegram messaging app.

Russia, which began its full-scale invasion in February 2022, has dropped over 10,000 guided bombs since the start of the year, including over 3,200 in May alone, Ukrainian military spokesman Nazar Voloshyn said.

A worker in a boiler room was killed when drone debris crashed into it, regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev said.

Emergency officials said three municipalities came under attack. Fragments from one drone fell on a guest house in Temriuk district, but its residents were evacuated and there were no injuries.

Emergency crews were working at the sites of the attacks.

Ukraine’s military said its drones struck four oil refineries, radar stations and other military objects in Russia in an attack on Friday morning.

“Unmanned aerial vehicles attacked the Afipsky, Ilsky, Krasnodar, and Astrakhan oil refineries,” the Ukrainian military said.

“Additionally, radar stations and electronic intelligence centres of the Russian invaders in the Bryansk region and the temporarily occupied Crimea were struck,” the statement said.

The Ukrainian military also said it struck drone storage and preparation sites in Russia’s Krasnodar region.

Drone hits Ilsky oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region

A drone has hit the Ilsky oil refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, injuring at least two people and causing a small fire, local authorities said.

Ukraine has been systematically targeting Russian energy infrastructure to try to disrupt Russia’s economy and its ability to fund its military effort, and its military said on Friday it had hit four oil refineries and military objects in Russia.

The Ilsky refinery is one of the main fuel producers in southern Russia, with a capacity to refine 6.6 million tonnes of crude (132,000 barrels per day) a year.

The head of the local district, Andrei Doroshevsky, said the fire had been put out, adding: “This night, the civilian infrastructure of our region was subjected to a massive attack by the criminal Kyiv regime.”

South Korea’s foreign ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador in protest of the pact between Moscow and North Korea signed in Pyongyang this week.

First vice foreign minister Kim Hong-kyun conveyed Seoul’s stance on the pact and military cooperation between Russia and North Korea to Georgy Zinoviev, the top Russian envoy to Seoul, Seoul’s foreign ministry said.

Mr Kim told Mr Zinoviev that Russia’s military support for North Korea harms South Korea’s security and would inevitably have a “negative impact” on relations between Seoul and Moscow. He also urged Russia to “act responsibly,” according to the ministry.

South Korean National Security Adviser Chang Ho-jin said on Thursday that Seoul would review the possibility of supplying weapons to Ukraine in response to the landmark pact.

Ukraine can use US-supplied weapons to hit Russian forces that are firing on Ukrainian troops anywhere across the border into Russia and not just in Russian territory near Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, the Pentagon said yesterday.

Last month, president Joe Biden quietly authorised Kyiv to launch US-supplied weapons at military targets inside Russia.

But officials said at the time that Biden’s decision applied only to targets inside Russia near the border with Ukraine‘s eastern Kharkiv region.

Pentagon spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder told reporters that while there had been no change in policy, Ukraine’s use of weapons against Russian troops was not limited to near Kharkiv on the Russian side.

“The ability to be able to fire back when fired upon is really what this policy is focused on... as we see Russian forces firing across the border, the ability for Ukraine to fire back at those ground forces using US-provided munitions,” Ryder said.

“It’s self-defense and so it makes sense for them to be able to do that,” he added.

Trial of US ballerina accused of treason begins in Russia

The trial of US ballerina Ksenia Karelina, 33, who was accused of high treason after sending a meagre $51.80 to a Ukrainian charity, has begun in western Russia today.

The 33-year-old, originally from Yekaterinburg but who moved to the US, sent money to the Ukrainian foundation Razom for Ukraine on the third day of the war in 2022. When she then visited her family at the start of this year in Russia, she was detained.

The press service of the Sverdlovsk Regional Court reported that Karelina “initiatively carried out a transfer of funds in the interests of one of the Ukrainian organizations, which were subsequently sent for the acquisition of tactical medicine items, equipment, weapons and ammunition by the Armed Forces of Ukraine”.

Judge Andrei Mineev, who is also considering the case of jailed US journalist Evan Gershkovich, closed the trial to the press.

Zelensky lists measures to preserve Ukraine’s energy system

Volodymyr Zelensky announced a set of measures to protect Ukraine’s energy system, including protection for plants coming under Russian fire and the development of alternative renewable energy sources.

“Life in Ukraine must be preserved and that includes in particular energy security,” the Ukrainian president said in his nightly video address.

Mr Zelensky outlined plans to minimise the effects of such attacks, including a programme of developing solar energy and energy storage facilities and a schedule for critical infrastructure sites to come up with alternative energy sources.

The work, he said, must be completed before winter and the increased energy demand associated with the change in seasons.

Mr Zelensky said the government would “continue to work on creating new energy generation and new decentralised energy capacities”. Also planned was “the construction of new balanced and manoeuvrable capacities for energy”.

“This process is quite challenging in wartime conditions, but we must implement it just as we have already implemented many difficulty projects,” he said.

And work was proceeding, Mr Zelensky said, on measures to protect existing energy sites.

Russia pounded Ukraine’s energy system in the first winter of the war, launched in February 2022, and renewed its assault on energy targets last March as Ukraine was running low on stocks of Western air defence missiles.

Drone and missile strikes have knocked out half of energy generating capacity since March, according to official accounts.

Attacks yesterday overnight hit four regions and cut power to more than 218,000 consumers, the Energy Ministry said.

US says Putin remarks about possible weapons for North Korea ‘incredibly concerning’

Vladimir Putin’s remarks that Russia may supply weapons for North Korea after signing a defence pact with Pyongyang are “incredibly concerning,” US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

Putin suggested after a visit to North Korea this week that such weapons supplies to the isolated nuclear-armed country would be a mirror response to the Western arming of Ukraine.

He also warned that US ally South Korea would be making “a big mistake” if it decided to supply arms to Ukraine, and that Moscow would respond to such a move in a way that would be painful for Seoul.

“It is incredibly concerning,” Miller told a news briefing when asked about Putin’s remarks about possible arms supplies to North Korea.

“It would destabilise the Korean Peninsula, of course, and potentially... depending on the type of weapons they provide, might violate UN Security Council resolutions that Russia itself has supported.”

The treaty signed by Putin and Kim on Wednesday commits each side to provide immediate military assistance to the other in the event of armed aggression against either one of them.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby called it a cause of concern but no surprise. He said Russia’s need for such foreign assistance was a sign of desperation.

“We’ve been talking about this and warning about a burgeoning defence relationship between these two countries now for many months through a series of downgraded intelligence that we’ve put out there,” he said.

“Obviously it’s something we’ve taken seriously.”

Kirby said the US also believed the Russia-North Korea pact would also be a concern to China, which the United States has urged to do more to reign in Pyongyang.

US to rush air defence interceptor missiles to Ukraine

The White House will rush delivery of air defence interceptor missiles to Ukraine by redirecting planned shipments to other allied nations, as Washington scrambles to counter increased Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

National security spokesperson John Kirby said the US had taken the “difficult but necessary decision to reprioritise near-term planned deliveries of foreign military sales to other countries,” though he wouldn’t say which nations would be affected or how many.

“Right now, we know that Ukraine urgently needs these additional capabilities,” Mr Kirby said on a call with reporters, adding, “Obviously more is needed, and it’s needed now.”

The announcement comes after president Joe Biden, during last week’s Group of Seven meeting in Italy, suggested such action might be necessary, saying, “We’ve let it be known for those countries that are expecting, from us, air defence systems in the future, that they’re going to have to wait.”

“Everything we have is going to go to Ukraine until their needs are met,” Biden said. “And then we will make good on the commitments we made to other countries.”

The US will reprioritise planned deliveries of foreign military sales of Patriot and other missiles to go to Ukraine, which is in “desperate need” of more air defense capabilities amid its ongoing war with Russia, the White House said.

Mr Rutte will become the secretary-general of the alliance in October after Romanian president Klaus Iohannis withdrew from the contest.

Romania to donate Patriot systems to Ukraine

Romania will donate two operational Patriot systems to Ukraine, the country’s supreme defence council has announced.

The council said the decision was “based on an in-depth technical evaluation” and “all measures were being taken to eliminate the risk of creating possible vulnerabilities for Romania”.

In a statement, it reiterated that Romania’s position will continue to be that Ukraine has a “legitimate right” to defend itself against Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

Russia attacked a village in Ukraine‘s eastern Donetsk region on Thursday, killing three people and injuring four more, including a child, prosecutors said.

The village of Rozkishne, about 25 km from the front line, was targeted by the strike, regional prosecutors said on Telegram.

According to preliminary data, Russian troops used the Smerch system to launch cluster munitions, prosecutors said.

Among the injured was a 14-year-old boy who was hospitalised. Four households, cars, and a gas pipeline were damaged in the attack, prosecutors added.

Footage appears to show Russia firing first 3000kg glide bomb

Footage has purported to show Russia firing its first 3000kg glide bomb near Ukraine’s second largest city.

The video, posted by a Russian military blogger called Fighterbomber, believed to be a member of the Russian air force, shows the bomb exploding on the outskirts of the village of Lyptsi, where Ukrainian soldiers are defending against a recently-launched attack in the wider Kharkiv region. The city’s namesake capital, just 17 miles south of the village, is home to some 1.3 million civilians.

Russian glide bombs, essentially Soviet-era explosives retrofitted with wings and navigation systems, have proved devastating in Ukraine.

In March, then defence minister Sergei Shoigu toured a weapons factory east of Moscow where he was shown the Fab-3000s in early production.

US to redirect Patriot air defense orders to Ukraine, FT reports

President Joe Biden’s administration plans to halt all open orders for Patriot air defense systems and interceptor missiles and redirect supply to Ukraine until its defense needs are met, the Financial Times has reported.

The move could be announced as early as Thursday, the report said, citing three people with knowledge of the decision.

Ukraine has been lobbying for the U.S.-made Patriot missile defences which have proved vital for Kyiv’s chances of shooting down Russia’s ballistic and hypersonic missiles. It has recently drummed up its requests for the missiles following Russian attacks on its critical energy sector.

Earlier this month, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced his country would deliver another 100 Patriot air defence missiles to Ukraine in an initiative with Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway.

South Korea says will reconsider providing weapons to Ukraine, Yonhap says

South Korea has said it will review the possibility of supplying weapons to Ukraine, Yonhap news reported, citing an official after the leaders of North Korea and Russia signed a pact pledging mutual defence in the event of war.

In an official statement released on Thursday, Seoul also condemned the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement signed by the leaders of North Korea and Russia this week, saying it violates United Nations sanctions.

“The government clearly emphasizes that any cooperation that directly or indirectly helps North Korea increase its military power is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions and is subject to monitoring and sanctions by the international community,” the presidential office said in a statement, adding that such violation would worsen Seoul’s relations with Moscow.

North Korea and Russia revived an agreement made during the Cold War era when their leaders met in Pyongyang this week, and agreed to provide military assistance if they are ever attacked.

Ukrainian drone attacks conducted by the SBU security agency caused fires at fuel depots in the Russian regions of Tambov and Adygeyea early on Thursday, a Kyiv intelligence source told Reuters .

Russian officials said earlier that fires had broken out at two fuel depots after suspected drone attacks.

The Ukrainian source said the depots supplied the Russian military and that the strikes aimed to reduce their resources.

Sport Olympics 2024: Andrew Gaze's legacy inspiring Australian basketball stars in bid for back-to-back medals in Paris

When Patty Mills led Australia's men's basketball team to its first Olympic medal ever in Tokyo, Andrew Gaze burst into tears during the post-game coverage of the bronze medal match.

The name Gaze is synonymous with Australian basketball, and this week the Gaze family has been honoured with a documentary about their role in lifting the sport to the position it currently holds in the country.

Australia's men's team heads to Paris this year as one of the favourites to secure a medal yet again, and that is largely thanks to the steps Andrew and his legendary father, Lindsay, took in establishing the sport throughout the '80s and '90s.

Before the Boomers rose to the podium in Tokyo, Australia's men had fallen short in the bronze medal game on four separate occasions — three of those came during Gaze's five Olympic campaigns.

"Australia winning the bronze medal in Tokyo meant more to me in recognition of those that have come before me," Andrew Gaze said in the documentary, GAZE — The First Family of Australian Basketball.

"My first thoughts when it happened was not just about the struggles that I had as a competitor trying to achieve that goal, but how others had provided the groundwork for this to eventually happen.

"It's the collective goal of a nation, the collective goal of a sport, we all have the right to rejoice in that, we all have the right to be proud of that."

Andrew and Lindsay Gaze may not have directly been involved in the Boomers' triumph in Tokyo, but the pair's fingerprints were all over the team's medal-winning effort.

Australia's coach, Brian Goorjian, played under Gaze Sr at the Melbourne Tigers before becoming a six-time NBL champion during his own coaching career.

In the documentary, Goorjian reveals one of his first calls after winning the bronze medal was to his old coach.

"The first call to Australia when we won that medal (was to) Lindsay. We had a beautiful conversation for over an hour on the phone," he said.

"You don't just put a group together and win it, there is a process to this. It started with Lindsay and they all have their hand on this and it's passed on and you're a part of it.

"It meant a lot to everybody how Andrew was when the thing finished because to me on all of this, Australian basketball is the Gazes."

"I always knew the passion he (Andrew) had for Australian basketball, and for his connections with the team," Lindsay Gaze added.

"Like me in some respects, he'd come so close so many times.

"It was like a huge burden off your back to say at last we have achieved the medal, albeit, not the ultimate prize which we aim for."

'He was Superman'

Andrew Gaze made his mark domestically as the best player in the NBL for the best part of two decades.

Some of Gaze's statistical marks have to be seen to be believed. He owns seven of the 10 best point-scoring seasons by average in NBL history, topped by a ridiculous 44.1 points per game he scored in the 1987 season.

Gaze's 18,908 career points are by far the most in league history, with the second-placed Leroy Loggins over 5,000 points behind at 13,106. He retired as a seven-time league MVP and stacked up 15 straight All-NBL First Team appearances between 1986 and 2000. No other player in league history comes close, and probably never will.

As Gaze poured in basket after basket throughout the 90s, he became a household name in Australian sport, but it was on the Olympic stage where the Aussie showcased his talents to the rest of the world.

"With the Melbourne Tigers, Andrew was the best player in the league," Gaze's long-time Melbourne Tigers teammate Lanard Copeland said.

"When he played for Australia he was Superman. He had that country on his back and he proved that he was the man for the job."

Gaze's 789 Olympic points through five campaigns between 1984 and 2000 rank him behind only Brazilian legend Oscar Schmidt in total points scored by men's basketball players.

However, all those points paled in comparison to the honour bestowed upon him in 2000 when he was chosen as Australia's flag-bearer for the opening ceremony in Sydney.

"I remember there were surveys and polls in newspapers when it went to the flag-bearer stuff and I remember seeing my name being in my fifth Olympics, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd ever be the one that would be the flag-bearer," Gaze recalled.

"When we're talking about pride, I had that in abundance when John Howard announced that Andrew was going to carry the flag," Gaze's father added.

"I thought where else in the world would a simple basketball athlete hug the prime minister of the country and his wife in an emotional thank you?"

Gaze recalled the feelings of euphoria that came over him while leading Australia's athletes out onto Stadium Australia with the entire globe watching.

"When we were eventually called to go over, I had this special thing around my neck that had 'FB' on it for flag-bearer and no real great instructions," he said.

"You know how you hear stories of these emotional moments where people get this great strength, I had that flag and it was weightless.

"In that excitement, I turned around and I looked back and I reckon I was 75 metres ahead of everyone else and I started to think, 'Back it off a bit, big fella, it's not all about you'."

How far can the Boomers go at the Olympics?

Make no mistake about it, the Boomers face an uphill task of securing back-to-back Olympic medals.

Australia is pitted in what looks like it will be a group of death at the Olympics, pending the final round of qualifications.

The Boomers are seeded in Group A, which already features Canada. Depending on how qualifying goes early next month, Australia could potentially find itself in a group featuring Canada, Spain and either Greece or Slovenia.

Canada's men's team has qualified for the Olympics for the first time since Sydney 2000, and features a roster that is stacked with NBA talent with the likes of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett and Lu Dort all expected to take part. It is a country that is a red-hot medal chance.

Spain is no longer the powerhouse country that won two silvers and a bronze between 2008 and 2016, but will still be no easybeats. In Greece or Slovenia, Australia could have the headache of figuring out how to stop either Giannis Antetokounmpo or Luka Doncic.

Group B will feature France and their phenom Victor Wembanyama making his Olympic debut, while Germany is the reigning FIBA World Cup champion, after stunning the United States in the semi-final last year.

Group C features Serbia and Nikola Jokic, the consensus best player in the world, and a beefed up US team that sees LeBron James make his return to the Olympic arena for the first time since 2012, while Stephen Curry is also slated to make his Olympic debut.

While the global basketball landscape looks much stronger than it did in Tokyo, the Boomers are also projecting to be a stronger outfit than they were three years ago. 

Australia still needs to cut five players from its 17-man roster ahead of the Olympics, but even with those cuts, the Boomers will take a roster flush with NBA talent to France.

Of the 17-man roster, Matthew Dellavedova, Dante Exum, Chris Goulding, Joe Ingles, Josh Green, Nick Kay, Jock Landale, Patty Mills, Duop Reath, Matisse Thybulle were all members of the bronze medal-winning team in 2021.

The most notable additions to that list are NBA duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels, with both players likely to have massive roles in the Boomers' chances this time around. Having featured in the recently completed NBA Finals, Green will also have an extended role at these Olympics.

Mills was the linchpin of the Boomers in Tokyo, averaging 23.3 points per game — including 42 in the bronze medal game against Slovenia — as he found a spot on the FIBA All-Star Five alongside Spain's Ricky Rubio, USA's Kevin Durant, Slovenia's Doncic and France's Rudy Gobert.

Like Gaze did, Mills has shown an ability to lift his game when representing his country. Now 35 years old, Mills will still play a major role in his fifth Olympic campaign, but Giddey's presence should allow the veteran guard to shoulder less of the ball-handling responsibilities.

A medal is not promised for Australia, it never is, but regardless of whether the Boomers finish on the podium or not, they'll have the inspiration of the Gaze family driving them all the way from the first tip-off to the final buzzer in France.

• For traditional English fare at a reasonable price, try a pub meal of fish and chips or bangers and mash. Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, and Cumberland sausages are also worth a try. Sip afternoon tea with delicious finger sandwiches and scones at Harrods in London for the ultimate in English tradition.
• Modern-day London boasts an array of diverse international restaurants. Popular options for the adventurous palate include Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek, and West African cuisine.
• For a picnic with French flair, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, pâtés, cured meats, fresh-baked bread, and fruit. In the cities, sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crepes, while mouthwatering pastries and hot café au lait beckon from cafes. In restaurants, the prix fixe option is a popular way to enjoy a set three- or four-course menu for a good price.
• Although lunch is generally served from noon until 2pm in France, dinner is served from 7:30pm onward. Those wishing to eat earlier can stop at a cafe, where light entrées and sandwiches are available throughout the afternoon and evening.
• Roman food is typically freshly prepared and varies depending on the season. Must-try bites include cacio e pepe (a simple dish of pasta, cheese and pepper) and supplí (a fried rice ball similar to Sicily's arancini).
• For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
• In Spain, on the tour extension, breakfast like a local with just a pastry and coffee. Then, tuck into a three-course lunch featuring a Spanish staple like savory seafood paella or grilled meat and fried potatoes. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Snack on small plates called tapas any time of day.
• At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
• We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
• If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
• Tips can only be paid in cash.
• If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
• The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.

Excitement builds in Boston ahead of Celtics championship parade

BOSTON - Duck boat pilot Julia Larson says the suspense is difficult. She's waiting to find out if she's one of the lucky drivers who will ride the world champion Celtics through the streets of Boston in Friday's rolling rally . "I hope so I have the Celtics bling. They keep it a secret until they tell us the night before," Larson tells WBZ-TV. It would be a dream since she hasn't done it before.

The excitement is building around the city with banners everywhere lining the parade route, at the State House, and a brand-new world championship banner hanging outside TD Garden where eager fans were grabbing their gear at the pro shop for the big day.

Fan Alex Hamel who now lives in Miami says he booked his ticket to Boston back in January. "I paid for flight protection just in case, but I was confident this was the best team all year long," said Hamel originally from Shrewsbury.

Ross Alexander did the same from Glasgow, Scotland. "We didn't know, but we booked when they were up one-zero. We had to tickets to the watch party and we just knew," Alexander said.

Not since 2008 have the Celtics taken to the streets in a championship duck parade. 

Businesses prepare for "onslaught" of people

There are "no parking" signs already up along Boylston Street where the parade will end instead of start this time, which is a boon for businesses. "We staff up like the marathon, double everything, more ice, glassware and staff ready for the onslaught of people to come in," said Bruno Marini with the Tavistock Restaurant Collection which owns Abe & Louie's and Atlantic Fish Company on Boylston Street.

Celtics fan Matthew Julien was 10 years old in 2008 and it's been a long wait for another championship. "I've actually been heartbroken, so this is a special time for me," Julien said.

Julia Larson just hopes she gets a bird's eye view and the props that go with it. "I've been here seven years and that's always the question they ask, have you driven the parade yet," she said.
