Spotlight on South Africa's premier safari reserve

Kruger Walking Safaris – Adventure into Unknown Territory

A Kruger walking safari is an unforgettable journey. Experience Kruger National Park as you never have before on a hiking trail through the game reserve.

Buffalo

On a walking safari, escape to the savannah and experience the bush as an explorer would’ve 100 years ago. No roads. No cars. Heighten your senses and trek amongst the wild animals!

You probably won’t see any people on your journey other than those in your Kruger National Park safari group. Just you and your mates hiking along.

When you’re on a walking safari trail, expect to get up very early at the crack of dawn, walk, have a rest during the hottest part of the day, then carry on later in the afternoon.

If you’re interested in going on a walking safari Kruger National Park has two types on offer:

Wilderness Trails

Carry your own clothes and essentials like malaria pills on wilderness trails . Stay in huts or tents which are provided for you in a fenced camp with toilets and showers. These camps are not accessible to the general public. Food is cooked for you.

Backpacking Trails

Carry all your own camping and cooking equipment, food and clothes. You must cook your own food and carry all your rubbish with you.

Saddle-billed stork

There are three types of backpacking trails on offer:

Lonely Bull Backpacking Trail

The trail starts at Shimuwini Rest Camp and follows the course of the Letaba River , then returns to Shimuwini. The trail runs between February and October each year.

Mphongolo Backpacking Trail

This trail starts at Shingwedzi Rest Camp and goes between the Shingwedzi and Mphongolo Rivers. The trail runs for most of the year except for December and January.

Olifants River Backpacking Trail

The trail leaves from Olifants Rest Camp . We recommend staying at this rest camp for the night you return as you’ll be taken back here at the end of the hike.

To go on a Kruger walking safari you must be at least 12 years old . If you’re older than 65, you’ll need a doctor’s certificate stating that you’re in good health and fit for these kind of Kruger National Park hikes. You could walk up to 20km in each day of the walking safari.

On each walking safari, there are between 4 and 8 hikers plus 2 Kruger Park rangers . This is a nice small group to make good friends and lasting memories with!

If you decide to go on a Kruger walking safari, you’ll doubtless come back with some amazing stories!

Kruger Pafuri Camp Luxury Safari Accommodation | RETURN Africa

  • Pafuri Walking Safaris

Our walking safaris explore arguably the most beautiful area and certainly the most biologically diverse corner of the Greater Kruger National Park, a corner that promises to become the centre of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.

With low road density guests can walk for hours without seeing any sign of humanity … unless your guide happens to point out a stone age hand axe, a one thousand year old pot shard or a Makuleke era ash midden.

On our walking safaris you can expect to encounter an array of changing landscapes, from bushveld to riverine forests, mountains to floodplains, as well as perennial and seasonal pans which attract a spectacular variety of animals and birds. Discover forests of fever trees, groves of baobabs and palm fringed wetlands, all falling within this extraordinary RAMSAR site. You will be likely to encounter large and potentially dangerous animals, whilst having the opportunity to appreciate many of the smaller hidden secrets of the African bush.

You’ll call our seasonal bush camps home, at one with nature’s sounds and smells, a place to recharge and refuel. A hot shower, delicious food, fireside stories and starry nights before surrendering to sleep in comfort serenaded by whooping hyenas and stirring leaves.

Throughout your stay our professional Field Guides will share their intimate knowledge of Pafuri, all of its inhabitants and its history.

Greater Kruger National Park

kruger park walking tours

Sub regions inside

Broader region.

Kapama River Lodge

The Greater Kruger Park encompasses a number of private reserves scattered around the edges of the Kruger National Park . Some of these smaller reserves share an unfenced border with the Kruger which allows the wildlife, including the Big Five, to move freely. Travellers are afforded an intimate safari experience with a limited number of lodges and safari vehicles in each private concession. An adventure awaits you in the Greater Kruger Park with a selection of tented and luxury safari lodge accommodation, open-vehicle game drives, guided walking safaris, elephant interactions, hot air ballooning experiences, cultural village tours, and sleep-out experiences beneath the stars.

The Kruger National Park experiences two distinct seasons: a dry winter from May to October and a wet summer from November to April. As the area is a year-round destination, when you choose to go largely depends on the type of experience you wish to have.

We rate the dry winter season as ideal for game viewing and safari walks. During this period, the vegetation thins out significantly and animals congregate around permanent waterholes, making them easier to spot. This is also a pleasant time to visit as there are relatively few mosquitoes and little to no rain. Day-time temperatures during winter are warm but not stiflingly hot. Visitors will need warm clothing for the chilly evenings and early-morning game drives.

At the end of the winter season, from around September to October, conditions can become very hot and humid. Concentrations of animals around water sources are at their peak, resulting in exceptional game viewing.

The summer rainfall period typically begins in November and continues until about April. The park is at its most beautiful as the vegetation becomes lush and green, providing an ideal backdrop for wildlife photography. This is also the calving season, when baby animals abound, and bird watching is at its best with the arrival of summer migrants. If you’re keen on combining your Kruger safari with a classic South African beach holiday, this is the time to visit.

Travellers looking to avoid the crowds should avoid Kruger during the peak tourist seasons from July to August and during the December/January South African school holidays.

At Safari.com, we have more than 50 accomplished Kruger travel consultants ready to help you make your Safari dream a reality. With our in-depth knowledge and first-hand experience of the Kruger region, we’re able to tailor a safari to suit your budget, and our price guarantee ensures that you won’t get it cheaper elsewhere… not even by booking direct. Please let one of our safari experts give you a call to discuss your travel plans, we provide the most convenient flight options with seamless transfers, pre and post safari accommodation, day trips and insider traveler tips or you can go onto Live Chat right now.

There are a number of reserves and concessions scattered around the edges of the Kruger, some sharing a border with the park. These smaller reserves offer diverse landscapes of savannah grasslands, granitic hills and riverine woodlands, often with the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains as backdrop. Most are home to the Big Five and a wide array of other big mammals.

Accommodation varies greatly and is usually far more affordable than the Kruger’s private concessions. You can choose anything from luxury chalets and rustic en-suite rondavels (huts) to self-catering bush lodges and romantic sleep-out decks under the stars.

Activities in these reserves include game drives, guided bush walks, star gazing, horse riding, hot-air ballooning, elephant-back safaris, white-water rafting, boat trips and cultural-village tours. You can even enjoy a game of golf, which might be interrupted by a giraffe strolling across the fairway.

Contact us now to plan your ideal Greater Kruger Park holiday. We have more than 50 expert safari consultants ready and waiting to help you.

Must see: Enjoy the thrill of a hot-air-balloon ride and watch the sun rising over the vast, untamed wilderness of the Kruger.

Kruger Wilderness Trails is  a unique 4 day walking safari for adventurers and nature lovers. Each day is spent walking through the 8000 hectare Greater Kruger Park reserve and 3 nights camping in a scenic location in the wilderness. A maximum of 8 guests per day (sleeping in 4 tents) ensures a private Kruger walking adventure of a lifetime. A professional trained guide and tracker team will lead an informative, thrilling, and unforgettable walk in the wild. While guests are out exploring the reserve on foot, a support team will be moving the camp to a new location. A packed brunch can be enjoyed in the bush, while snacks and refreshments will be on offer upon arrival at the camp. Spend the evening on a game drive, a mouthwatering campfire dinner and overnight in a canvas dome tent.

The emphasis of the trail is to spend time on foot in the Greater Kruger National Park, not only looking for the large mammals but also the smaller creatures. Your experienced trails guide will introduce you to aspects of the bush that are normally overlooked when driving around the Kruger Park. In keeping with the wilderness atmosphere, sites for the safari trail camps are carefully selected for their scenic beauty.

The Kruger Lowveld area

Kruger Lowveld is a region of superlatives. From the Great Escarpment’s scented forests and tumbling waterfalls, to the majestic Blyde River Canyon with its endless vistas over the Lowveld; from the southern reaches of the Kruger National Park, where it abuts the rolling cane fields of the Onderberg, to Barberton, in the lea of some of the world’s oldest mountains and the memories of the thrilling Gold Rush that once took place here.

Animals exposed, fabulous photos, wild walks and bright-plumed birds. South Africa is globally renowned for its phenomenal game viewing and sound conservation ethics. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the iconic Kruger National Park, where 147 species of mammals – more than any other African wildlife area – exist alongside 517 bird species, 114 different types of reptile (there are 3 000 Nile crocodiles), 33 species of amphibian and 50 kinds of fish. Bordering the Kruger National Park are a number of private reserves- hundreds of thousands of hectares of conservation land adjacent to the Kruger National Park, with no fences in between and unlimited movement of game. The reserves showcase the best of South Africa’s wildlife and the Big 5. They offer the very best, authentic, close-up wildlife viewing and photography to be found anywhere on the African continent.

The Greater Kruger Park region has some of the most diverse habitats in South Africa and boasts an impressive bird list of close to 600 species. Birdwatchers can expect to see Kori Bustard, African Fish Eagle, etc.

Groups spend their nights in dome style tents. Dining / socialising area where the campfire’s flickering shadows encourage stories of adventures in the African bush. Enjoy the Greater Kruger Park nightlife and dining experience

Culture and history

The Kruger Lowveld is also a place of historical and cultural significance. Iron Age trade routes and African traditions reach back across many centuries. Gold rushes at Pilgrim’s Rest and Barberton were precursors to the discovery of gold in Johannesburg. Steeped in the history of traditional cultures, pioneers and fortune seekers, visitors will encounter a contemporary Lowveld culture with a wealth of stories that inspire the senses and connect them to the land and its people.

4 Canvas dome tents each sleeping 2 people on swags/mattresses En suite bucket showers and chemical toilet facilities Standing hand basins with warm water each morning and afternoon Central mess tent for kitchen and dining Camp fire in the evenings Solar powered lanterns in the camp and tents Light breakfast in the morning before departure, packed brunch to be enjoyed in the bush, snacks in the afternoon and 3-course evening dinner Safari vehicle for game viewing and transfers in and out of the reserve.

Overall rating of Kruger Wilderness Trails: “Moderate”. You do not need to be ultra-fit but if you should be able to walk between 13 and 20 km per day. The route takes you along paths, tracks and through the veld. See  Walking grades for more details about “Moderate” rating.

The walking safari is in the Greater Kruger Park, situated between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa in Limpopo Province. It is an 8000 hectare private game reserve, which shares open borders with the Kruger National Park. The Olifants River courses through the reserve, while prominent mountainous ridges and boulder koppies characterise the terrain, making it an incredibly diverse and interesting region to explore on foot.

The area affords you the opportunity of excellent game viewing in this diverse habitat of mountains and plains. More species of mammals than in any other African wildlife area

Some of the world’s largest mammals find their home in South Africa, where elephant, giraffe, hippo, buffalo, and rhino reside in the wild Kruger Park and surrounding private game reserves. Game drives lead to unforgettable sightings of these large species, in addition to general game, such as zebra, impala, kudu, gnu, waterbuck, bushbuck, duiker, and wilderness trails steenbok, while nyala are frequent visitors to the camp itself.

Following in the footsteps of the herbivorous mammals are the carnivorous species of the South African bush. Lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah, African wild dog, and the Nile crocodile are some of the prominent predators residing in the Kruger. Smaller predators include jackal, mongoose, civet, and genet, honey badger, among others.

The Kruger habitat accommodates a complete smorgasbord of birder’s delights. Water birds such as herons, storks, plovers, spoonbills, and sandpipers are common along dam edges; kingfishers, orioles, robins, chats, larks, cisticolas, and coucals are some of the veld and woodland birds around; while birds of prey are seen and heard throughout the day.

What to expect

The best morning safaris begin long before the sun heats up the African landscape. At this time of day, the animals are roaming freely, which means you get to see their first activities of the day, before they seek out shade as the day becomes hotter. Some of the best wildlife sightings of predators and their prey, and sleepy plains game, happen during the earliest parts of the day, making a morning safari a popular one.

We travel the park for about 3 hours before stopping for breakfast. Once you’ve had breakfast or a light snack, the tour will continue as we visit waterholes and watch the animals come in to quench their thirst before taking on the heat of the day.

We will stop at a picnic spot or rest camp during the morning for breakfast and for restroom breaks. Please a good quality sun cream, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes, warm clothing in the winter months and a rain jacket in the summer months. Mineral waters are included on all safaris.

Morning Safari

A morning safari starts bright and early. During the winter months, the sun has barely risen before the safari begins. We collect our safari clients from their lodgings in Hazyview, between 5:30 and 6:00 am, while those travelling from further away can either meet us at Perry’s Bridge Trading Post & Tourism Centre, or at either Numbi or Phabeni Gate.

The mornings are some of the most magical times in the Kruger National Park. The cooler weather has the wildlife a lot more active and it is not unusual to see all sorts of predators including Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Hyena and Wild Dogs.

We enter the Kruger, just as the gates open for the day. For the next few hours, we tour some of the most popular areas in the Southern Kruger, stopping at lookout points and watering holes, in search of wildlife. In a single morning, guests can see plenty of animals including lion, elephant, impala, and giraffe, as well as some nocturnal animals.

Guests will enjoy their pre-packed breakfasts at a local picnic area. Guides will make regular stops so guests can stretch their legs. The tour will continue until 11:30, when guests will be returned to the lodge and continue on with their day, leaving the park with incredible memories.
