What is a PDF sewing pattern?
A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.
I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!
How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?
Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.
Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns .

DIY Travel Pillow {Neck Pillow} - Free Pattern
Modified: Mar 1, 2023 by Treasurie
Are you planning a plane trip or long car ride? Make yourself a soft, comfortable DIY travel pillow to make your journey enjoyable and memorable. These neck pillows can be made in under 30 minutes and are a great beginner sewing project. DIY travel pillows are great to give for gifts and can be made in colorful fabrics that coordinate with luggage.

DIY Travel Pillow - Supplies
- FABRIC - ½ yard (0.45m) of cotton fabric - Choose a soft fabric that will breathe and not make you sweat. I used a soft quilting cotton. Since this will be next to your face, make sure you prewash the fabric before you start sewing. This will eliminate shrinkage and remove any chemicals the manufacturer may have added.
- STUFFING - Polyester stuffing is best. This is the kind you use for stuffed toys.
- SEWING MACHINE
- NEEDLE - Hand needle and thread
- PATTERN - Your DIY travel pillow pattern. Download the free pattern . (Link will open in a new window). Just trim the boxes and stick the 2 pages together.

DIY Travel Pillow - The Video
Hooray! There is a video to go with this tutorial. Like all my videos, it is just a few minutes long, so grab a piece of chocolate and relax for a short while. Don't forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel for more weekly videos.
>> PRESS PLAY BELOW
DIY Travel Pillow - Instructions
Step 1 - cut fabric.
Place your pattern on the fold of your fabric and cut 2 pieces. One will be for the front and the other for the back. If you have larger scrap pieces use one color for the front and another for the back
Step 2 - Stitch
Put the fabric pieces with right sides together and stitch all the way around, leaving a 1 ½ inch (4cm) gap on the outside as shown. Use smaller straight stitches. I recommend using a 2.0 length. If you are new to sewing curves then read my article >> Sewing Curves
![travel sewing pattern travel pillow pattern](https://i0.wp.com/blog.treasurie.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/diy-travel-pillow-2-1024x683.jpg)
Step 3 - Clip and Turn
Clip the curves, leaving the gap unclipped. Turn your DIY travel pillow to the right side through the gap.

![travel sewing pattern DIY Travel Pillow - Turn and Press](https://i0.wp.com/blog.treasurie.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/diy-travel-pillow-3-1024x683.jpg)
Step 4 - Stuffing
Give your pillow a good press and start stuffing. I made mine fairly hard but you can stuff it as much or little as you find comfortable. Keep in mind, the stuffing will squash down once you put your head on it.
Step 5 - Stitch Gap
Close the gap with an invisible ladder stitch . This stitch goes through the fold and if you use a matching color thread, it will almost be unnoticeable.

Thank you for this pattern. I use a pillow this shape as my bed pillow. It fits my short neck and small person shoulders best. My ear is not crushed nor does my face get pillow wrinkles. It just cradles my head. It is filled with polyester fiberfil that doesn't clump, ever. It was purchased, and having a pattern without having to create my own is so nice. I'll be filling the new one with polyester fiberfil that doesn't clump as well. Perhaps I'll pack it slightly firmer than current to see if the slight tweak will be even better.

Thank you for this pattern! I used a zipper so I can stuff it with a few clothing items to 'carry on' the plane so I could have them easily accessible.

Hi Beth, the gap works anywhere. I did it on the side as the seam is a little straighter so easier to close up at the end. Thanks for reading.

I'm in the process of making a neck pillow using your pattern. Thanks for the excellent instructions. I have a question. Is there any reason not to make the closure spot at the back of the pattern instead of on the side? I'm thinking that it might be easier to stuff from the back as well as easier sewing it closed since it seems like the curve is a bit flatter at the back. Your thoughts? Again thanks for making the pattern available and for the detailed instructions.

I just made this pillow - ultra easy! The stuffing was the biggest portion of the half hour duration! Lol! Thank-you for the pattern! Ooh! And I put a fabric loop on the back part so I can hook it on the tv tray latch on the plane 😉 or on a carabiner for on my carry on.

Traveling can get very uncomfortable at times, especially if you’re traveling by car or worse, bus. But if you have the right equipment for the trip, you can make it as comfortable as possible. What kind of equipment am I talking about? Neck pillows.

If you don’t have a printer or you can’t use the downloadable pattern for some other reason, you can draw it yourself on a piece of paper.
Just draw one half of the usual travel pillow shape. Similar to a bean. Then cut it out.
STEP 2: Cut the fabric
Fold the fabric in half and align the edges. Then put the travel pillow sewing pattern on the fold, pin it and cut through both layers according to the pattern. The seam allowance is already included.
Do this two times, as you need two identical pieces of fabric – one for the front and one for the back. If you have larger scrap pieces – this is a great project to use couple of them!
![travel sewing pattern](https://hellosewing.com/wp-content/uploads/diy-travel-pillow-fabrics.jpg)
STEP 3: Pin
Unfold both pieces of fabric and set them on top of each other, right sides facing each other. Align the edges and pin everything in place. Leave an opening for turning.
![travel sewing pattern](https://hellosewing.com/wp-content/uploads/diy-travel-pillow-pinned.jpg)
STEP 4: Sew
Stitch all around the edges using a 3/8 inch seam allowance. Leave a gap of about two inches unstitched so that you can turn the DIY neck pillow inside out.
Use your scissors to notch all around the pillow, snipping small triangles out of the seam allowance about one inch apart from each other. This will allow the pillow to form properly along the curves. Don’t notch the gap.
STEP 5: Turn inside out and press
Turn the whole pillow inside out through the opening you left unstitched earlier. Tuck the seam allowance of the opening inside and press it. Press the entire thing flat with an iron using a lot of steam.
![travel sewing pattern](https://hellosewing.com/wp-content/uploads/travel-pillow21.jpg)
STEP 6: Fill the pillow with the stuffing
Take the polyester stuffing you have prepared and fill the neck pillow with it. You can put as much stuffing as you wish, it’s your choice. If you like your pillows to be fluffier then put a bit more, just don’t overdo it so that it doesn’t become too hard.
![travel sewing pattern](https://hellosewing.com/wp-content/uploads/diy-travel-pillow-stuffing.jpg)
STEP 7: Finish the DIY travel pillow
Once you have finished stuffing the neck pillow, all that’s left to do is to close up the opening on it. Take your needle and a thread and close the opening shut with a ladder stitch.

NECK PILLOW STUFFING OPTIONS:
As I mentioned earlier, you can use whichever stuffing you prefer, but if you’re not sure, here are a few suggestions and their characteristics.

- Option 5: Feathers
Light and soft, very comfortable, and it can be shaped easily. It tends to flatten often and it can get pretty hot during use.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Donna. I love it!
So many times I have wanted one of these! I can quilt, but making 3D items is always more of s struggle. I think I can manage this though. Look for your neck pillow to be featured in this week’s Creative Compulsions.

It’s actually very easy, I’m sure you can manage it! Thanks for the feature, I’ll stop by this week
My daughter and I recently traveled on airplane and I was wishing I had a travel pillow. This will be on my to-do list for our next cross-country excursion!
It’s a must have travel item for me! So comfy
I love the pattern. I use the micro-beads and use them in a separate pillow then the decorative outer shell I put a 1/2 inch loop in the seam. I attach a carabiner to that. When I am not using it after a flight I can attach it to a loop or strap before I leave the plane and don’t loose me favorite pillow. Just a thought worth mentioning.
Great idea, Judi, thanks for sharing. This sounds like a handy feature
this is amazing but here are the some best travel pillows for tall person that support your neck and head than that any other pillow
These are custom made pillows so that can be made to fit any person tall or short
That’s really very nice. Thanks.
Great project. I will be making one of these soon. Could I use scraps of fabric with the Polyester fill?
If you do yarn crafts, put a zipper on the back and leave a small gap at the bottom of each “arm”. Put 1 skein in each arm, threading the end through the gaps. Put an extra skin or 2 to fill it for comfort and now you can knit or crochet easily.
That is clever! Thanks for the tip, Susan!
Lately I have seen notices that say we use this type of pillow wrong. The opening goes in the back. This is so the pillow supports our head when we fall asleep and the head nods forward. Always something new to learn.
Yes, isn’t it funny how we are taught to do something and we are doing it this way for years when suddenly you realize you are doing it all wrong

The Travel Trio Collection of Sewing Patterns: How to Sew a Travel Wardrobe
Travel trio inspirations.
When designing this Travel Trio sewing pattern collection, I imagine the wearer having a conversation with someone, and that someone is wondering why her clothes don't look and perform as fabulously as yours! Having your clothes speak your language is what I hope for.
The Travel Trio pattern collection inspirations were many. The idea first came to me when thinking about putting together a travel wardrobe using my then current pattern collection. As I thought about it, I realized that new designs were needed, and itseemed better to design outfits rather than single pieces. Since most outfits, in my mind, consist of three pieces, I came up with the name Travel Trio!
Once I had designed a few new pieces, I realized that there were going to be limits to what I could offer with three patterns in each envelope. I started thinking of ways to be economical with the number of pattern pieces for each garment without compromising the design, how to size them and different ways to manipulate the pieces to get the most variety from each pattern. Next was to consider fit and design, thinking only about actually traveling in these clothes. Fullness, comfort, mix and match, layering, lining, elastic, fabric recovery, etc. After designing the first 4 or 5 garments, the parameters that I had to work within were actually inspiring as opposed to limiting, as you would think.
This is a pattern to be used over and over again with a large variety of fabrics. From sweater knits, rayon/LYCRA jerseys, ITY knits, prints and solids to woven fabrics.
Versatility
There will be at least four patterns in the collection and not only do the garments in each pattern envelope work great together but the entire collection can be mixed and matched. These are just a few examples of the versatility of the Travel Trio Pattern Collection.
The Drape Front Jacket in Travel Trio One 1204 can have the draped front overlay (as shown on the cover illustration) or the under wrap pattern piece can be cut twice creating a flat front for the jacket. Two different looks from one pattern. This jacket is beautiful in a drapey knit jersey, a sweater knit or a felted wool for the flat front version.
The Wrap Skirt in Travel Trio Two 331 can be made reversible and sewn either long or short for two completely different looks. Cute with leggings underneath!
The Hoodie 331 can be made reversible, long or short, with turn back cuffs or not.
The Top in Travel Trio Three has a shirred insert above the bust line that can be made using an illusion fabric, the same color as the top, or a contrasting color. There is an alternative front pattern piece for a simple plain front raglan sleeve top as well.
The back pattern piece of The Pocket Skirt, of Travel Trio Three, can be cut twice for a better-than-ever simple full skirt.

Make a travel pouch in 20 minutes.
This week I have a really easy, fast, and scrap-busting little project for you! I like to dive into my fabric stash to try to find the perfect match for a project like this.
This useful little pouch can help you to organize your purse, lunch bag, or you can use it to store your toothbrush and toothpaste, to store your take-away cutlery set and napkin, or for taking some craft tools with you wherever you might go. In addition, the pouch is easy to wash..
It definitely makes a great little handmade gift! You can make it in different sizes– But the size in this tutorial works both for a standard plastic cutlery set or a normal toothbrush with a tube of toothpaste. Check the size of your cutlery or toothbrush before you start cutting so that you get the right size. If it isn’t quite right, just add an inch in length and/or width.
These pouches can even sell for 16 dollars a piece on Etsy!
So, if you are looking for a beginner friendly project this is it! The only hard thing is the edge topstitching. Keeping a straight line at ⅛” can be a bit of a challenge.
To begin, gather your basic sewing tools, a snap button or a little piece of velcro, 2 matching fabric pieces 3 ½ by 19 inch, some thread, and off we go!
1. Cut the fabrics and fusible interfacing: cut two pieces of fabric and one piece of interfacing all measuring 3 ½ by 19 inches.
2. Iron the fusible interfacing to one of the fabrics, to make the pouch a little sturdier. Want to make ironing your fabric easier? Check out our wonderful bestselling wool pressing mat!
3. Pin the 2 fabric pieces together, right sides facing. Leave a 1 ½” turning hole in one of the long sides.
4. Sew all around at ¼”. I’m using the ¼” quilting foot with guide from our store. Perfect to keep a straight seam
5. Clip the corners.
6. Turn inside out though the turning hole. Push out the corners with an awl.

Be the first to know about our tutorials, weekly deals and so much more!
7. Press the seams so everything is neat and flat.
8. Fold over the top, leaving a flap at the top edge- this will become the closure on the finished pouch. Press again.
9. Edgestitch all around, closing the 2 long sides. If you have one, I would strongly advise to use an edge joining foot to get nice even edge stitches
10. Add a snap button in the flap. We sell 2 snap button sets in our shop: plastic snap buttons and metal snap buttons .
I timed it. Making the second pouch only took me 18 minutes! Everything was in place when I started, so I gathered the material I needed and set up my iron and sewing machine. Threading my machine with black thread also happened in those 18 minutes :-).

Don't ever pay top dollar for a travel pillow again!
I was taking a flight recently and during a short stopover before boarding the long overnight flight across the Atlantic, I realized that I had forgotten my trusty travel pillow on the plane. That old pillow definitely helps me get some rest when sitting upright for hours and hours in economy.
Well, I decided I just couldn't deal with an overnight flight without a travel pillow so I went to the gift shop to purchase one. And holy smokes, it was almost $30 for a simple pillow!
I resolved to figure out how much these pillows actually cost to make and to find some good patterns so I could make my own when I got home.
Well, it turns out that these travel pillows are quite easy to make and cheap too. It will only cost a couple of dollars of materials if you don't already have what you need in your stash –which you probably do.
In any case, I wanted to share the long list of free travel pillow sewing patterns that I was able to put together so you can save money too and travel more comfortably on your next trip.

hi, these are really great ideas, and awesome alternative to regular travel pillows from the shop
What can I use for stuffing to make it a “squishy” pillow that gives a lot when you squeeze it, but quickly resumes its shape when you let go?
I would use upholstery foam – High-Density Polyurethane Foam. It has different densities and firmness.
Thank you. This is great!
I saw one at the airport recently that had a hood attached- like a hoodie sweatshirt. Any patterns for that? Thanks!
Your neck pillows are unique and adorable.
Great job putting these all in one space. Pegeth
I find that none of the above type of pillows work. Not enough support for my neck. Last trip I bough a more expensive one with more support in it and it was much better. Still woke on and off with sore neck but not as bad.

How to Make a Large Travel Tote
![travel sewing pattern How to Make a Large travel tote](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Open-Bottom-Tote.jpg?resize=600%2C900&ssl=1)
This is a fantastic large travel tote that easily sits on your pull along suitcase without falling off. There is a gap to fit the bag over your handle so that it sits nicely on top of your suitcase. I found this pattern on Sewing Times and intended to make it for myself but had to share it with you as well. It is not a difficult pattern to make but there are a lot of steps so just take your time. This is an intermediate to advanced sewing project as there are several zippers to install on this bag but with patience you can do it.
***Addendum*** I did remake this large travel tote using quilting cotton and it turned out to be a better choice.
What you will Need: How to Make a Large Travel Tote
- 2 Yds exterior fabric and lining fabric
- 2 Yds Pellon 808 interfacing or similar
- Cotton Strapping
Step 1: Cut your fabrics
Cut your fabrics as follows:
Outer fabric and interfacing
- 2 – 24½″×10¾″
- 1 – 8¾″×15½″
- 1 – 17½″×8″
- 1 – 34″×4⅜″
- 1 – 15″×4¾″
- 1 – 8¾″×15½″
- 3 – 17½″×8″ and interfacing
- 1 – 34″×4⅜″ and interfacing
- 1 – 15″×4¾″ and interfacing
Step 2: Create the outer pocket
Take the 8¾″×15½″ piece of outer fabric and lining fabric and place it on your work surface. Fuse the corresponding interfacing piece to the wrongside of the outer fabric piece following the manufacturers instructions. Shorten your 10″ zipper to 8 3/4″ by cutting both the top and bottom ends of the zipper making sure the zipper pull is in the center or create a 8 3/4″ zipper from the continuous zipper. Place the lining piece right sides up on your work surface. Lay the zipper right sides up on the lining and the outer piece right sides down on the zipper making a zipper sandwich. Stitch the zipper through all layers. Turn right sides out and press.
![travel sewing pattern](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Fuse-the-interfacing.jpg?resize=600%2C400&ssl=1)
Fold the outer piece up to meet the other side of the zipper and lining piece the same way so that you have another zipper sandwich. Stitch the zipper. Turn the pieces right sides out. Press well so that the zipper is at the top part of the pocket as shown.
![travel sewing pattern](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Finished-pocket-piece.jpg?resize=600%2C400&ssl=1)
Step 2: Add the Pocket to the Large travel tote
Take the 24½″×10¾″ pieces of outer fabric and fuse the interfacing to the wrongside of the fabric following the manufacturers instructions. This time make the interfacing piece 3/8″ smaller than the outer fabric piece to reduce bulk. Find the center of one of the pieces and mark. Find the center of the pocket piece and mark that as well. Measure up 1″ from the bottom of the piece and place the pocket piece lining up the centers and pin. Using zig-zag stitch sew the pocket to the bag along the sides only.
![travel sewing pattern](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Add-the-pocket-Piece.jpg?resize=600%2C432&ssl=1)
Step 3: Add the Straps to the Large Travel tote
Take 44″ of the webbing and place it over the sides you just stitched and looping it to create a handle. Stitch along both sides of the webbing. Create a box with an X in it 1 1/2″ above the zipper to secure the strap on both sides. Sew the straps to the back of the bag in the same way but without the pocket.
![travel sewing pattern](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Add-the-strabbing.jpg?resize=600%2C462&ssl=1)
Step 4: Add the Top Zipper
Take the 30″ zipper and shorten it to 24 1/2″ the same way you shortened the previous zipper or use the continuous zipper. Lay the 24½″×10¾″ lining piece on your work surface right sides up. Place your zipper right sides up on the lining and the outer fabric wrongsides down on the zipper. Stitch the zipper. Turn the bag right sides out and press. Repeat this process for the other side of the zipper. Topstitch along both sides of the zipper.
![travel sewing pattern](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Sandwich-the-top-zipper.jpg?resize=600%2C269&ssl=1)
Step 5: Sew the bag
Line up the lining pieces together and the outer pieces together and stitch the sides of the bag using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Turn right sides out. zig-zag stitch or serge the lining to the outer bag around the bottom.

Step 6: Create the bottom compartment
Take the 34″×4⅜″ and 15″×4¾″ outer and lining pieces and fuse the corresponding interfacing pieces to them. This time make the interfacing piece 3/8″ smaller than the outer fabric piece to reduce bulk. Attach a 34″ zipper to the long outer piece between the lining and the outer piece in the same way you did the previous pieces and stitch. I used a continuous zipper for this step and added two zipper pulls to make opening and closing the compartment easier. You could use an upholstery zipper for this due to the length. Open the zipper and press. Top stitch the zipper.
With right sides together clip the 15″×4¾″ piece to the zipper placket you just sewed so that the placket is sandwiched between the outer fabric and the lining. Repeat for the other end so that the placket is bunched in the center. Stitch the ends using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Turn the entire compartment right sides out. Serge or zig-zag stitch the bottom of the placket and the top part that doesn’t have the zipper.
![travel sewing pattern](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Add-non-zipper-placket.jpg?resize=600%2C314&ssl=1)
Step 7: Create the bottom
Take the 17½″×8″ pieces and fuse the interfacing to each piece. Find the center of all four sides of the pieces and mark. Determine the center of the sides of the placket as shown. Find the center of the bottom of the main bag as well on all four sides and mark.
![travel sewing pattern](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/FInd-rhe-centers.jpg?resize=600%2C400&ssl=1)
Step 8: add the bottom
Turn the placket wrong sides out. With right sides together place the outer bottom piece together with the placket matching the center on the long side. Match the other long side marking and then the short end markings and pin. Stitch along the center of the long side opposite the zipper side and remove the pins. Pinch the corners to make them crisp. Snip a small cut to allow the fabric to lay flat and pin. Repeat for all four corners. Take one of the lining pieces and lay it right sides together on top of the placket and the bottom. Pin the lining piece to the outer bottom enclosing the placket. Stitch all the way around the lining piece leaving an opening at the spot where you stitched the center in the first step. Make sure not to catch the placket while sewing. Turn right sides out. Stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch.
![travel sewing pattern](https://i0.wp.com/sewverycrafty.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/stitch-along-non-zipper-placket.jpg?resize=600%2C380&ssl=1)
Step 9: Add the bottom to the top
Take a bottom lining piece and pin it to the bottom of the top bag with the lining pieces facing each other. This will be the bottom of the top part of the tote. Pinch the corners in the same way that you did the placket and pin. Stitch all the way around the bag and the lining.
Step 10: Add the Top Bag to the Bottom Compartment
Fold up the top bag and place it into the center of the bottom of the bag. Place the bottom compartment on top of the top bag and pin the zipper and remaining placket to the bag. Stitch along the non-zipper placket area using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Place the final lining bottom piece on top of the entire bag right sides together and pin. Stitch around the entire bag leaving an opening where you sewed the non-zipper placket area. Turn right sides out. Stitch the opening closed using ladder stitch.

7 DIY Travel Bag Patterns So You Can Travel In Style
Have you ever noticed that when you are shopping for various travel bags, there are two options? You can get cheaply made nylon bags or extremely overpriced “bland” looking bags.
But how do we get around these two options? The answer is simple: DIY travel bags.
Today, I want to go over the different types of travel bags and supplies and how to create them, and then show you some beautiful travel bag patterns that you can use to create your traveling accessories.
Page Contents
Types of Travel Bags
Before we jump into the how-to or the patterns list, I want to go over the different kinds of bags categorized as “travel bags.” Remember that this post focuses on travel bags you can create, not factory-made luggage.
- Jewelry bag
- Toiletry bag
- Garment bag
- Travel tote
- Backpack
Supplies You Will Need to Make Your Own Travel Bag
The supplies you will need will vary depending on the specific item you are making. The following list will include various notions and supplies you will need to make different travel bags.
- Travel bag sewing pattern
- Interfacing for structure
- Trimming (optional for decoration)
- Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
- Sewing machine
How Do You Make a Travel Bag?
Now that we know the different types of travel bags and the supplies we may need to create them let’s go over the steps of making a travel bag.
I recommend using a pattern when doing a project like this since it will have detailed instructions for the different steps. These are essential steps to give you an idea of what’s involved when making a large bag.
- Step 1: Choose a pattern
When looking for the perfect pattern, you want to make sure you are looking for one that is within your skill level and will meet your traveling needs. There are thousands of travel bag patterns available on the market, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding something that will work for you.
- Step 2: Cut all fabric and interfacing pieces
The pattern you choose either has specific cutting instructions or may even come with templates you can use to cut the fabric pieces you will need. Remember the age-old tip: “measure twice, cut once.”
- Step 3: Attach notions to the fabric pieces
Where you add the notions will vary depending on which ones you are using and when the pattern tells you to add them. I wanted to include this so you can think about when you need to add them. There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing you forgot to add a D-ring or other notions and have to take apart part of your project and add it. *Speaking from personal experience*
- Step 4: Sew the exterior pieces together
The pattern writer will do a great job of explaining how to do this step. Ensure you keep your raw edges lined up at all times to ensure an even seam allowance.
- Step 5: Create and attach the straps
This is a fun step; you can make straps from various materials like canvas, leather, quilting cotton, denim, nylon strapping, etc. Some patterns will have you attach the straps before you sew the lining and exterior parts together. Others will have you connect them to the exterior first.
- Step 6: Sew the lining pieces together
This step will be where you add pockets for the bag’s interior and create the lining. I like to use a fun, funky fabric inside my bags. It gives it a little more personality and pizazz.
Tip: If you use a weekender bag pattern and want a sizeable wide-open bag, you can skip creating a lining. To conceal the raw edges of the exterior parts, take bias tape and sew it along all the raw edges. This will give the bag a more finished look; plus, when you wash it, the edges won’t unravel.
- Step 7: Sew the lining and exterior parts together
This final step is always exciting since you see the entire bag come together. Follow the instructions in the pattern you’ve used to complete the bag. Once you’ve finished the bag, take a moment to admire your work and show it off to your friends and family!
7 Travel Bag Patterns For You To Peruse
For this compilation, I tried to find a good selection of travel bag patterns to give you a glimpse into what is possible with a bit of fabric, thread, and imagination. Without further ado, let’s dive into this fun collection!
- Rollie Pollie Organizer
![travel sewing pattern floral makeup travel bag patterns](https://i0.wp.com/stitchobsessed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/travelbag1.jpg?resize=596%2C590&ssl=1)
You can use this fun little organizer to store all kinds of things for your trip, from toiletries to makeup to jewelry. This toiletry bag sewing pattern includes instructions and templates to create this unique roll-up organizer. It features four removable pouches, and the pattern has instructions for three different sizes. The skill level for this project is intermediate.
- Convertible Travel Bag
![travel sewing pattern convertible backpack travel bag patterns](https://i0.wp.com/stitchobsessed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/travelbag2.jpg?resize=597%2C440&ssl=1)
How cute is this convertible bag? This bag would be great if you are planning a day trip to the city or if you want to take your laptop to the local coffee shop to do some work. The maker of this bag used an existing messenger bag pattern and made some changes to the straps to make it convertible. The straps can be used either as a messenger bag or backpack.
- DIY Easy Makeup Bag
![travel sewing pattern makeup bag travel bag patterns](https://i0.wp.com/stitchobsessed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/travelbag3.jpg?resize=668%2C376&ssl=1)
Here is a free tutorial to make this cute pleated makeup bag. The maker gives a supplies list, written instructions with photos, and a YouTube video to accompany the tutorial. The finished bag will measure approximately 9”x5”x5”, the perfect size for travel.
- Retro Travel Bag

I found this pattern on Etsy in the shop PolkaDotChair. The pattern will show you how to create your duffel bag that measures 20”x11”x6”. The pattern includes templates and gives you three different strap options depending on what look you are going for with your bag.
- Got Your Back 2.1
![travel sewing pattern tie dye backpack travel bag patterns](https://i0.wp.com/stitchobsessed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/travelbag5.jpg?resize=490%2C653&ssl=1)

The backpack has multiple pockets to store items and keep your things organized while traveling and has a convenient handle on top if you don’t want to put it on your back while walking around. The finished size of the backpack is 14”x12”6”.
- Divide and Conquer

This beautiful bag can be made using the Townsend Travel Bag sewing pattern. You can tell the designer pays attention to detail by the professional finishes of this bag. Adding the train case bottom is a massive bonus if you need to bring shoes or other bulky items with you. You can use it for an overnight bag, carry-on, diaper bag, or gym bag, to name a few options. The final measurements of this bag are 16”x13”x6”.
I hope you enjoyed this group of travel bag patterns. I want to make a complete set of luggage for my next trip! How about you? Which bag was your favorite? Let me know in the comments below.
