What are the Motorcycles in Mission: Impossible 2?

Mission Impossible 2 Motorcycles

Mission: Impossible 2 came out in 2000, starring Tom Cruise as Impossible Missions Forces (IMF) agent Ethan Hunt, who must track down a biological weapon known as “Chimera.” The film, directed by John Woo, was the highest-grossing film of the year 2000.

Mission Impossible 2 Motorcycles

Though the plot and dialogue were subjected to criticism, the action sequences were widely lauded. The most memorable is the motorcycle chase / duel late in the film, rife with stoppies, wheelies, jumps, and dirt action.

Mission Impossible 2 Motorcycles

There are two motorcycles involved, both Triumph models:

  • Triumph Speed Triple
  • Triumph Daytona 955i

Mission Impossible 2 Motorcycles

While the two-wheeled physics of the action leave much to be desired, the scene certainly introduced a broader audience to the “bug-eyed” beauty of the Speed Triple. Knobby tires were installed in order to handle the dirt scenes — tires which can be seen in stills from the film, as well as photos of the actual Speed Triple stunt bike on display.

M:I-2 Triumph Speed Triple

This is the black naked bike ridden by Tom Cruise’s character in the film. Some sources have reported the bike as a Speed Triple 955i — however, the black wheels and cursive quarter panel script indicate the bike is an earlier version, either a T509 or the 1999 T595. The T509 Speed Triples had an 885cc, 108-hp, fuel-injected triple cylinder motor, while the T595 received a re-tuned version of the larger 955cc triple from the Daytona.

Mission Impossible 2 Motorcycles

The dual “bug-eye” headlamps and polished frame gave the bike’s a factory streetfighter look, which would become a trademark of the series. The high-powered triples were tuned for broader torque curves, making these bikes potent hooligan machines.

Mission Impossible 2 Motorcycles

M:I-2 Triumph Daytona 955i

The Daytona was Triumph’s entry into the sport bike market. The Daytona 955i had a 130-hp triple that helped to establish the company’s reputation for high-performance, distinctive triples.

Mission Impossible 2 Motorcycles

While the bikes could not quite match the laptimes of the Japanese-built competition, the brawny Daytona 955i was big on class and personality — and it worked better on real roads than the liter-class replica racers from Japan.

Mission Impossible II Motorcycle Chase Scene

Here’s the full video of the chase scene in HD.

' src=

The bike is a 1999 955i Speed Triple with the larger 955 engine. A T595 is a faired Daytona not a Speed Triple. The script was changed in 2000 from the earlier type and the black wheels changed in 2000 also. the frame is NOT highly polished but lacquered silver sparkle paint. – I only know this as I have the same cross-over year bike identical (apart from the silly tyres) to the one in the film.

' src=

Bikes were great in the scene but they rely heavily on the audience not knowing the difference between a street and knob tire – it was in your face obvious. C’mon Mr Woo, it’s that sort of detail that…..eh, what do I know, the film still made half a billion box office.

10 MCU Costumes That Look Nothing Like the Comic Book Versions

10 greatest monster movie crossover events of all time, 30 actors who have been in the most movies.

Tom Cruise has cemented his name in the history of blockbuster cinema as one of its most bankable and profitable actors — and its arguably last movie star . The legacy has been earned, in great part, on the back of his famous perfectionism and his penchant for performing extreme stunts. For years, he has been using his movies as a medium to play out his thrill-seeking tendencies, and he’s been quite open about the fact. As a testament to his real-life “need for speed,” the man owns a sizable collection of airplanes, sports cars, and motorcycles.

This interest visibly overlaps with his movie roles — most famously, he developed a training program for his Top Gun: Maverick co-stars so that they could convincingly portray the cockpit scenes. Similarly, his enduring love for motorcycles showcases itself as a signature element across his filmography. Cruise has helmed an uncommon number of motorcycle stunt sequences as an action movie star, and he is always found doing so on the best motorcycles on the market. Here are 10 motorcycles that Tom Cruise has ridden in movies.

10 Kawasaki GPZ900R — Top Gun

The Kawasaki GPZ900R accompanied Cruise in a Top Gun scene that has garnered iconic status in Hollywood history. This is the motorcycle that his character, Maverick is riding as the air force pilot attempts to race an F14 fighter jet. The GPZ900R holds an important place in the history of modern sports bikes. It was the very first model by Kawasaki to be pegged with the Ninja tag, which has become a commonly recognized brand name in automobiles today. Developed in secret by Kawasaki over many years, the GPZ900R was the fastest production motorcycle of its time and the first to cross the 150 mph barrier — a fitting companion for a character known for his “need for speed.”

9 Triumph Speed Triple – Mission: Impossible 2

The Mission Impossible franchise introduced audiences to a new brand of cinema entertainment with elaborate stunt set pieces led by Cruise. The film series has given us many iconic stunts over the years. Mission: Impossible 2 includes one such sequence: an extended motorcycle chase that has mostly faded from memory, but was fresh and exciting at the time. Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, gets up to all sorts of antics in this scene, shooting down pursuers left and right while riding a Triumph Street Triple. The model continues to be produced by Triumph Motorcycles, and the dual headlights remain an important part of its design language to this day. The Triumph Street Triple is particularly noted for its unusual three-cylinder engine configuration that lends this model a unique sound and character.

8 Triumph Bonneville — Mission: Impossible III

Mission: Impossible III missed out on a key feature of the film series as there were no motorcycle chases in that scene. But as with his love of running, Cruise managed to shoehorn a two-wheeler moment in this movie as well. The scene in question is a short but neat one where Ethan arrives at an airstrip riding a Triumph Bonneville, modified in the scrambler style. Produced by one of the oldest motorcycle companies in the world, the Bonneville was first introduced in 1959, and retains much of its heritage in its present-day design. One can definitely see the appeal that the model would have for the petrolhead in Cruise, and he is known to keep a Bonneville in his personal motorcycle collection as well. Meanwhile, one of the Bonnevilles that was used in the movie was auctioned for nearly $30,000 .

7 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic – Days of Thunder

It doesn’t matter if it’s a movie about NASCAR drivers — Cruise will find an excuse to insert a motorcycle somewhere. In Days of Thunder , he stars as a driver with a background in open-wheel racing, who wants to move over to NASCAR. Obviously, his choice of commute has to be a motorcycle. He shows up in a dramatic "speak of the devil" fashion at the beginning of the movie astride a Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic, just as the on-screen interlocutors are casting doubts about his abilities as a racer. The wide, low-slung handlebars combined with the triple headlights is a classic Harley look that immediately radiates coolness.

6 Ducati Hypermotard – Knight and Day

The motorcycle chase in Knight and Day falls squarely in the category of the Mission: Impossible -style blockbuster spy thrillers, taking place in an old European city across winding alleys and old town squares. So, it’s quite appropriate that the motorcycle that features in this chase is a Ducati, which is often described as the Ferrari of motorcycles. Over the years, Ducati has strategically developed an iconic series in every major category of motorcycles. The Ducati Hypermotard follows the company’s classic signatures in how it stylistically stands out from the competition as a unique offering. Most noticeably, it is equipped with a 939 cc engine in a motorcycle category that is mostly occupied by smaller engines in the 450-700 cc range. As a hypermotard, it is also a realistic motorcycle for the twisted chase scene across the streets of Seville.

5 BMW R NineT Scrambler – Mission: Impossible - Fallout

With technological advancements, Cruise was able to offer audiences even more motorcycle chases in later Mission Impossible movies. The one in Fallout is a worthy contender for one of the most exciting stunt sequences ever in the movie series, a three-minute extravaganza where Ethan Hunt is chased across Paris by police officers. BMW’s product strategy with regard to their two-wheeler products can be compared to Ducati, as they have built a number of iconic motorcycle series across limited categories. The BMW R NineT is a very versatile model with a similar reputation, and garners interest as a top-notch entry in the modern retro category.

4 Triumph Thruxton – Edge of Tomorrow

It may appear as a tenuous proposition at first glance — a classic motorcycle chase in a sci-fi movie about super-powered aliens. But Edge of Tomorrow makes it work, and we find Cruise’s character racing down the streets of London in a proper British motorcycle: the Triumph Thruxton. Much like the Bonneville, the Thruxton also derives its name and legacy from a classic motorcycle. However, the Thruxton was originally an endurance racing motorcycle, and reflects that heritage in its modern-day counterpart. This motorcycle can be categorized as a café racer, and it comes with a twin-cylinder engine, an elegant retro look, and clip-on handlebars.

3 Honda CRF 450X – Oblivion

Oblivion is an underrated sci-fi movie from Cruise’s filmography, although it has gained renewed interest with recent years and looks ready to stand the test of time. He plays the role of a lone worker in a barren, futuristic world, taking orders from an all-knowing AI to repair autonomous drones during the day. In order to get to the location of these drones, he has a trusty futuristic motorcycle that easily travails the arid dunes of this mysterious land. The futuristic motorcycle is in fact a modified Honda CRF450X, a popular enduro motorcycle with a stellar reputation for its reliability — a very realistic choice on part of the filmmakers.

2 BMW Motorrad S1000RR – Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

Rogue Nation features perhaps the best motorcycle scene from Cruise, ever. It is one of the top highlights of the recent Mission: Impossible movies, and Cruise was even reported to be riding as fast as 130 mph during the course of its shooting. The unique headlight configurations of the BMW S1000RR is an unforgettable fixture of this scene with its tasteful asymmetry leading the way for Cruise’s aggressive maneuvers. The S1000RR has a stellar reputation in the sports bike category, having originally been designed as a racing bike for the Superbike World Championship.

1 Kawasaki H2 – Top Gun: Maverick

Released over three decades after the original, Top Gun: Maverick was bound to have some callbacks to the first movie. The movie did come with a fair few nostalgic moments, but it managed to do so in a tasteful, wholesome way that was well-received by audiences. It also recreated the iconic scene where Maverick chases a fighter jet in his Kawasaki motorcycle. However, motorheads saw an added layer of relevance that was placed into the scene in the sequel. Top Gun: Maverick sees Cruise’s character riding a Kawasaki H2 down the airstrip — the modern-day successor of the GPZ900R, which was featured in the original movie. The Kawasaki H2 also happens to be the fastest production motorcycle at the present day, just as the GPZ900R was when Top Gun was released.

Tom Cruise needs no introduction to action movie fans. Despite being a multi-millionaire and a three-time Oscar-nominated actor, he is well known for his thrill of living life on the edge. He has performed stunts and racing scenes at high speeds using expensive and fast bikes and cars.

Tom Cruise is not only a talented actor but also an enormous automotive enthusiast. Having been an active participant in the Celebrity Championship car races, Tom owns a massive collection of motorcycles and cars in his garage . This article explores some cool motorcycles that Tom Cruise owns and a few that he rode in his blockbuster movies, Mission Impossible and Top Gun .

10 Owned: Confederate Hellcat

We cannot talk about celebrities and their badass motorcycles without mentioning Tom Cruise twice or three times. The top-rated actor made a dramatic entry for Mission Impossible 3 movie premiere on a Confederate Hellcat. Famous for its unique design, Tom must have been impressed by this bike to include one in his collection. The Confederate Hellcat is built by Confederate Motors, currently registered as Curtiss Motorcycles, based in Birmingham, Alabama.

The bike is powered by a 56-degree 2.0-liter four-stroke DOHC V-Twin engine capable of 132bhp and 145lb-ft maximum torque. The Confederate Hellcat also features a 5-speed transmission, carbon-fiber wheels, double disc front brakes, single-disc rear brakes, an electric starter, and a solo seat with a removable passenger seat.

9 Ethan Hunt: BMW R nine T Scrambler

In the last  Mission Impossible: Fallout , Tom Cruise rides a BMW R nine T Scrambler during one of the greatest fast-paced urban chase scenes as he tries to run from the police. The street race features some hard riding in Paris's streets, which ends abruptly with Tom Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, crashing the bike into a Peugeot.

The BMW R nine T Scrambler boasts a 1170cc air/oil-cooled 8-valve DOHC two-cylinder boxer engine that generates 110bhp and 88lb-ft peak torque. The modular nature of this bike's frame allows it to accommodate radical customization possibilities. The tubular-steel modules are bolted together to form a structure that features a stressed engine as the keystone.

8 Owned: Ducati Desmosedici RR

In 2008, Tom Cruise became the first person to own a $72,500 Ducati Desmosedici RR . The Desmosedici is the first street-legal replica of the Ducati Desmosedici MotoGP racing bike, and only 1500 presold units were made available for the public. The first 500 Desmosedici RR examples were explicitly designated for the owners of the Ducati 999R model.

The Desmosedici RR houses a 90-degree 800cc DOHC V4 engine that churns out 180bhp and 77lb-ft maximum torque. The bike features forged magnesium wheels, gas-pressurized Ohlins fork, Brembo brakes, 6-speed transmission, hydraulic steering damper, and extra-long swingarms.

7 Captain Maverick: Kawasaki GPZ900R

In the movie Top Gun, anyone fascinated by Maverick remembers the Kawasaki motorcycle that he rode in some of the scenes. The Kawasaki GPZ900R, also known as the Ninja 900, has a revolutionary design that preceded modern sports bikes. Although developed in secret, the motorcycle also prides itself on rocking the world's first liquid-cooled 16-valve inline four-cylinder motorcycle engine.

This 908cc engine delivers 115bhp that pushes the Kawasaki GPZ900R to reach a maximum speed of 151mph. The GPZ900R is the first stock road bike to exceed the 150mph speed mark. The bike features air suspension, a steel frame, 16-inch front wheels, 18-inch rear wheels, anti-dive forks, and a crankshaft counter-balancer.

6 Owned: Triumph Bonneville Scrambler

During the filming of Mission Impossible 3 , a Triumph Bonneville modified in street scrambler style was one of two motorcycles built and used on set. The bike is built using the Triumph Scrambler platform, and a few tweaks converted it to emulate a blend of 1960s classic styling with modern technology. This one-off model features custom paint, a seat unit and fenders, retro knobbly tires, and a hand-made exhaust system.

The Bonneville Scrambler is powered by a 360-degree 790cc air-cooled parallel-twin 8-valve engine that is relatively bigger than the base Bonneville model. After the movie shoot was complete, the two models were later sold. One was actioned off at Bonham's, while Tom Cruise purchased the other model for $29,250.

5 Ethan Hunt: BMW S1000RR

Motorcycle action in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation featured Ethan Hunt speeding in a BMW S1000RR. Tom Cruise rides the bike on a winding road as bad guys chase him, using the BMW S1000RR. Initially built to compete in the 2009 Superbike World Championship, BMW made only 1000 units to satisfy homologation requirements.

RELATED: A Detailed Look At The Kawasaki Motorcycle That Tom Cruise Drove In Top Gun

The BMW S1000RR boasts a 999cc four-cylinder engine that produces 199bhp. The bike features a standard anti-lock braking system with electronic traction control offered as an option. It also features short velocity stacks, light valves, controlled interference exhaust pipe, cruise control, light aluminum chassis, and a Quickshift Assist Pro from BMW's Dynamic Package.

4 Owned: Honda CRF450X

The futuristic folding motocross bike in the box office hit, Oblivion, stands out, especially for motorcycle enthusiasts. The heavily modified CRF450X is fondly remembered by many for the scene where Tom Cruise wheelies his way across a vast landscape of desert salt flats. The ghost-white bike was lighter and faster since the original cooling system, fuel tanks, exhaust system, and bodywork were removed and replaced with modified parts from the Glendale facility.

Three modified Honda CRF450X models were used for filming the movie. One model was a victim of stunt work during the shoot, failing to survive till the end. However, the filming director gifted Tom Cruise with one of the two remaining examples as a birthday present. The last model was kept in storage in case an Oblivion sequel was in the works.

3 Captain Maverick: Kawasaki H2

Just as Tom Cruise was making a comeback to Top Gun's set as  Maverick , so did the Kawasaki motorbike. In the original 1986 film, Captain Maverick rode the revolutionary Kawasaki Ninja 900 that made history in more ways than one. A few decades later, the supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2 is the preferred star bike for the film. From the movie trailer, Tom Cruise's character races this superbike with a fighter jet.

Known as one of the most powerful and the fastest production bikes on the market, the Ninja H2 boasts a 998cc supercharged inline four-cylinder engine coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This engine produces 228bhp and 105lb-ft maximum torque, but the Ninja H2 produces 239bhp when the engine is fed with ram air.

2 Owned: Vyrus 987 C3 4V

The Vyrus motorcycles are uncommon to some motorcycle enthusiasts , primarily because the bespoke manufacturer builds individual bikes on order. Since these limited-production bikes are made with high-quality components with no two bikes being the same, they are expensive. The cheapest model starts at $60,000, and Tom Cruise happens to own one of these unique beasts in his collection.

The top range 987 C3 4V, considered more potent than Suzuki Hayabusa, Ducati Desmosedici RR, or the Kawasaki ZZR1400, packs a 1200-cubic centimeter 4-valve water-cooled Ducati-sourced engine that develops 211bhp. Tom Cruise revealed his 987 C3 4V during his 51st birthday celebration, making headlines with his speedy exit.

1 Ethan Hunt: Triumph Speed Triple

Mission Impossible 2 was rated the highest-grossing film for the year 2000, an indication of just how exhilarating the action sequences were. Tom Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, relied on the Speed Triple model to track down a biological weapon known as Chimera. The Triumph Speed Triple was so thrilling and distinctive after its launch that it created a new category dubbed Naked Streetfighter.

Tom Cruise personally chose the Speed Triple for the Mission Impossible 2 film since it was the most characteristic and iconic sports bike towards the end of the last millennium. The Speed Triple rocks a 955cc fuel-injected inline three-cylinder engine that generates 130 hp.

Top 10 bikes ridden by Tom Cruise in movies – ever!

He's the world's biggest movie star, loves doing his own stunts, and loves riding motorcycles too - here are the top ten bikes ridden on screen by Tom Cruise

Simon Hancocks's picture

IT's another year, another year of summer blockbuster movies, another Mission: Impossible flick and, with it, as has become almost inevitable, another starring role for Tom Cruise and a bike – in this case Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One and motorcycle nut Tom tearing around Rome on a stolen police BMW.

But haven’t we seen all this before? Bikes have pretty much starred in all of Tom’s recent movies, haven’t they? But which movies and which bikes exactly? To answer the question once and for all here’s our list of the Ten Best Motorcycle Moments in Tom Cruise Movies, in reverse chronological order

Top 10 Tom Cruise movie bikes

A Kawasaki GPz900R ridden in Top Gun

Kawasaki GPz900R, Top Gun (1986)

A Triumph Speed Triple ridden in Mission Impossible II

Triumph Speed Triple, Mission: Impossible II (2000)

The next Tom Cruise big bike outing comes in the second of his Mission: Impossible series (we’ll gloss over his brief appearance on a Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail in 1990’s NASCAR flick ‘Days of Thunder’, here) and set the staple for bikes starring in the franchise. Resurgent Brit brand Triumph got the gig this time and its then brand-new Speed Triple T509 and Daytona 595 star in a quite frankly ridiculous bike chase with Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt aboard the Speedie chasing baddie Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott) on the Daytona. Implausible pirouettes, shooting stoppies, jumps and more take place, sometimes with the bikes wearing full knobbly tyres, sometimes not. One of the bikes used is now at Triumph’s Visitor Experience Museum in Hinckley

A Triumph Bonneville ridden in Mission Impossible III

Triumph Bonneville, Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Another Mission: Impossible outing, although, with no significant bike chases of stunts in this third outing of the franchise, if you blink you’ll probably miss it. Again, it’s a Triumph but this time the first version of the Bonneville Scrambler , again slightly modified with full-on knobblies on which Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt arrives at an airstrip for a rendezvous with his team. No great shakes, admittedly, but enough, apparently, for one of the bikes used in the scene to be later auctioned off for a whopping $30,000!

Ducati Hypermotard ridden in Knight and Day

Ducati Hypermotard, Knight and Day (2010)

Four years later Tom is back to bike stunting form with a prolonged bike stunt scene and chase. This time it’s not a Mission: Impossible flick but the one-off comedy thriller Knight and Day in which co-stars as mysterious spy character Roy Miller alongside screen siren Cameron Diaz as June Havens. The scene concerned features Tom this time on a Ducati Hypermotard with Cameron as his pillion (although some of the scenes were doubled by stunt men and women and one actually had a dummy in place of Ms Diaz). Interesting trivia: rumour has it that some of the stunts and jumps were so demanding that the bike was actually swapped for a specially prepared Aprilia Dorsoduro disguised to look like the Ducati.

Honda CRF450X ridden in Oblivion

‘Honda CRF450X’, Oblivion (2013)

Triumph Thruxton ridden in Edge of Tomorrow

Triumph Thruxton, Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Another biking ‘cameo’ in a slightly oddball futuristic Tom Cruise sci-fi flick. 2014’s ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ saw Cruise star as soldier Cage alongside Britain’s Emily Blunt as Rita in a battle against aliens that he re-lives the same day over and over again. Before all that, however, Cage is seen scratching around London on a bike and, yes, it’s another Triumph, this time the old 865cc, air-cooled Thruxton cafĂ© racer .

BMW S 1000 RR ridden in Mission Impossible

BMW S1000RR, Mission: Impossible, Rogue Nation (2015)

Right, enough of all that silliness, time for some proper, full-on, Tom Cruise and motorcycles biking action. The fifth episode of Cruise’s Mission: Impossible series, Rogue Nation, sees bikes back in the big time as Cruise’s Ethan Hunt chases after mysterious British agent Rebecca Ferguson in Morocco, with both (and more than a few baddies) this time mounted on BMW S1000RR s and fun and fast stuff it really is. Three interesting facts: One, ex-BSB racer Jenny Tinmouth did the riding instead of Rebecca; Two, Essex leathers specialists Hideout made their suits, one for standing, one for riding; and three (and nothing to do with bikes), the opening scene which sees Hunt clinging to the side of a transport plane, was shot at RAF Wittering, near Peterborough

BMW R Nine T ridden in Mission Impossible

BMW RnineT Pure, Mission: Impossible, Fallout (2018)

The Mission: Impossible connection with BMW continued in the next outing of the franchise, Fallout, where bikes again played a starring role. This time we see Hunt this time in Paris aboard a BMW RnineT Pure, riding the wrong way around the Arc de Triomphe and more before being side-swiped by a car. (Much of the tracking footage, incidentally, was shot by ex-champion motocrosser Rob Herring.) It’s not all BMWs, though. We also briefly see co-star Henry Cavill aboard a Triumph Speed Triple and Rebecca Ferguson (again doubled by Jenny Tinmouth) on a Triumph Tiger.

Top Gun Maverick Kawasaki H2 scene

Kawasaki H2, Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

If you’re starting to think by now that all Tom Cruise motorcycle movies appearances are in Mission: Impossible movies, think again. 2022 saw the long overdue sequel to 1986’s Top Gun and the return, not just of Cruise’s Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell character, ‘Ice Man’, F14 jets and so on but also of bikes – in an early scene ‘Mav’ not only memorably goes for a spin on Kawasaki’s spiritual successor to the original’s GPz, the supercharged H2 , but we also briefly see that, in his aircraft hanger/man cave, he also still has the original Ninja, too!

The truth behind M:I-2 's most dangerous stunt

Director John Woo says Tom Cruise's life dangled by a thread

Liane Bonin is a senior writer for EW.com

If heights give you the heebie-jeebies, you may want to keep your eyes wide shut during the opening scene of Mission: Impossible 2 (in theaters May 24). Tom Cruise scales a vertigo-inducing cliff with his bare hands, leaps over a deadly drop, then hangs from a rock ledge by his fingertips before pulling himself up to safety. If you can't figure out how the producers found a stunt double who looks so much like the 37-year-old star, that's because they didn't. "It was all Tom up there," says producer Paula Wagner. "So of course, we had some really nail-biting moments."

Cruise, who is also a producer on the film, insisted on performing the sequence wearing only a thin safety cable, and he vetoed a small-scale cliff that had been constructed by the set department. Even though Cruise had two rock climbing experts on the set to guide him, his decision didn't sit well with director John Woo ( Face/Off ). "I was really mad that he wanted to do it, but I tried to stop him and I couldn't," Woo says. "I was so scared I was sweating. I couldn't even watch the monitor when we shot it."

Unfortunately for Woo, it took seven takes under the blazing Moab, Utah, sun to get the scene right. "We had five cameras on the cliff, including a helicopter camera, a camera on a crane, and cameramen hanging from safety cables, but we had focus problems, so we had to do it again and again," he says. "But Tom would say, 'I'm okay, John, don't worry, I want to do it one more time."'

Though Cruise's decision to perform his own stunts, including dangling from a helicopter six stories above the ground, didn't carry over to the rest of the crew (a lighting double refused to step in for one of Cruise's costars during a helicopter stunt), everyone seems to agree that his derring-do made a difference in the finished product. "The opening sequence just wouldn't have been the same if he hadn't done it himself," says costar John Polson. "No amount of special effects can make you feel like that, because you can tell that it's really just him."

Another quick nod to the dagger in the eye bit that Cruise insisted on.  He wanted to use a real dagger and put it a quarter inch away from his eyeball (with the use of a cable for mathematical precision) with co-star Dougray Scott using all his strength for realism.  May sound like no big deal, but you put a needle sharp edged blade a quarter of an inch to your eye and see if you flinch.

Mission Impossible 2 was directed by John Woo for Paramount Pictures.

Cruise’s mind-blowing stunts have become a signature of “ Mission: Impossible ” films, each one seemingly topping the next. The key stunt in the franchise’s seventh installment involves Cruise driving a motorcycle off the edge of a cliff, dismounting and parachuting into a Norwegian valley. With the drop of its behind-the-scenes footage in December , the studio billed it as “the biggest stunt in cinema history.”

Though the moment has already been watched on YouTube more than 13 million times, and 30 million more times in the film’s trailers, it’s among the film’s most anticipated scenes. After all, we still don’t know how the stunt fits within the plot — What could be so dire that agent Ethan Hunt must jump off a cliff?

While answers won’t come until the movie’s theatrical release July 12, we now know that the risky stunt was the first thing Cruise did on Day 1 of filming, which began in 2020. And it was all about risk assessment.

In a recent interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Cruise said they started with the scene, in part, to allow the cast and crew to see whether he would be able to star in the $290-million film. After all, he could either get injured or die — or both.

“Well, we know we’re either going to continue with the film or not,” Cruise said, letting out a laugh. “Let’s know Day 1, what is gonna happen: Do we all continue, or is it a major re-run?”

Cruise added that he wanted to make sure his mind was clear enough to focus solely on the stunt.

“You have to be razor sharp for something like that; I don’t want to drop that and shoot other things and have my mind somewhere else,” Cruise said. “You don’t want to be waking up in the middle of the night, ‘It’s still, I still, I still,’ and it has that effect.”

Cruise is no stranger to aerial stunts with a high probability of death. The “Top Gun” actor said preparing for the recent stunt “was years of planning,” a culmination of all the training he’s done with motorcycles, cars and aerobatics.

In the franchise’s last film, “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” (2018), Cruise jumped into a helicopter in midflight , taking the controls to chase another helicopter. In the same movie, he parachuted from a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III from 25,000 feet, close to five miles up, becoming “the first actor” to do so in a major motion picture, according to Paramount (most skydiving attempts occur at 10,000 feet).

In 2011 for “ Ghost Protocol ,” the “Jerry McGuire” actor climbed along the exposed walls of the world’s largest building, the Burj Khalifa of Dubai. And in 2015 for “Rogue Nation,” Cruise hung off the side of an Airbus A400M Atlas as it was taking off, a stunt that veteran stunt coordinator and frequent Cruise collaborator Wade Eastwood called “a stressful experience.”

tom cruise mission impossible 2 motorcycle

The recent motorcycle stunt, which Cruise had apparently repeated six times, was no exception. Though the film’s computer-generated images make Cruise appear to be jumping off the rocky surface of the cliff, the scene required a large ramp to be built.

While Cruise is seen atop the motorcycle in the behind-the-scenes video, accelerating off the ramp, a helicopter and drone fly overhead to gather footage. The film’s crew, including director Christopher McQuarrie, are huddled in a nearby tent, faces glued to a set of monitors. After he abandons the bike and hangs in the open air, Cruise releases his parachute and the crew erupts in cheers.

“The only thing you have to avoid when doing a stunt like this are serious injury or death,” Eastwood, who has managed stunts for the last three “Mission Impossible” films, said in the BTS video. “You’re falling. If you don’t get a clean exit from the bike and you get tangled up with it, if you don’t open your parachute, you’re not gonna make it.”

The scene wasn’t the only stressful one to shoot: Cruise said he also worried about a car chase that involved him handcuffed to a small car, steering with one hand while drifting along the cobblestone streets of Rome, with his co-star Hayley Atwell in the passenger seat.

“It’s plenty of challenges,” Cruise said with a wide grin, laughing once again.

“Dead Reckoning” had its world premiere Sunday at the Auditorium Conciliazione in Rome with Cruise and other cast members, including Atwell and Vanessa Kirby , in attendance. “Part Two” is expected to be released in June 2024. Filming wrapped in September for what has been rumored to be Cruise’s final appearance in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.

Mission: Impossible 2 - The One Stunt Tom Cruise Begged Director John Woo To Do

Ethan hanging onto a rock

Tom Cruise's much-publicized stunt of driving a motorcycle off a cliff in the upcoming "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1" had fans losing their minds. Of course, the death-defying leap of faith — where he opens a parachute as he lets the cycle falls to the earth below — isn't the first time the adrenaline-fueled actor made director Christopher McQuarrie lose sleep. The "Dead Reckoning" stunt was preceded by a HALO jump in 2018's "Mission: Impossible – Fallout," and a stunt hanging outside a door of a cargo plane in "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" in 2015.

Cruise obviously doesn't have a fear of heights, which director John Woo discovered firsthand at the helm of the 2000 blockbuster "Mission: Impossible II." In a 2022 interview with Letterboxd  about his filmmaking career, Woo revealed the terror he felt as Cruise performed the film's marquee stunt to open the film.

"I think the most dangerous and scary moment was when we were shooting 'Mission: Impossible II,' and Tom Cruise climbed 2,000 feet up a cliff by himself," Woo recalled for the publication. "And he didn't allow me to use any stunt doubles to do it. He wanted to do all of the action by himself. It was insane!"

Cruise begged Woo to do the rock-climbing scene

Without question, Tom Cruise is Hollywood's last great action star , and he has rightfully earned that reputation through his persistence in performing all of his own stunts to entertain his audiences no matter the risks involved. John Woo learned of Cruise's persistence during the production of "Mission: Impossible II," when the actor wouldn't take no for an answer from the director when it came to tackling the cliff-climbing scene.

"The first time [he asked] I refused, because I was angry and worried. But he was begging me to do it," Woo told Letterboxd. "I was so scared, I couldn't even bear to watch the monitor. But we set it all up, and he's climbing up there by himself, and I'm sitting there praying, 'Jesus, please don't let anything happen.' He had no protection, so it was very scary, very dangerous. But the scene turned out really great."

With so much at stake, Woo admitted to Letterboxd that word surrounding the cliff-climbing stunt was initially kept private: " I didn't let the studio know about it. Or the insurance company!"

At least studios and insurance companies can take comfort in knowing that Cruise extensively prepares for his stunts. In fact, Cruise jumped out of a plane over 500 times for his Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning training to do his motorcycle cliff scene.

Dead Reckoning

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” director Christopher McQuarrie made headlines at the start of June after revealing to Empire magazine that Tom Cruise ‘s insane motorcycle stunt was shot on the first day of filming. The stunt, billed as the most death-defying one of Cruise’s acting career thus far, finds Cruise riding a motorcycle off the edge of a cliff and then parachuting to safety while in free fall.

“Well we know either we will continue with the film or we’re not. Let’s know day one!” Cruise recently told Entertainment Tonight about filming the stunt at the very start of production. “Let us know day one what is going to happen: Do we all continue or is it a major rewrite?”

“I was training and I was ready,” Cruise added. “You have to be razor sharp when you’re doing something like that. It was very important as we were prepping the film that it was actually the first thing. I don’t want to drop that and go shoot other things and have my mind somewhere else. Everyone was prepped. Let’s just get it done.”

“Dead Reckoning” is expected to be one of the biggest Hollywood tentpoles of the summer movie season, if not the biggest. Cruise is riding high off the blockbuster success of “Top Gun: Maverick” last year, which ended its run as the 11th highest grossing film in history (unadjusted for inflation) with $1.49 billion. While “Dead Reckoning” may not reach those box office heights, it’s certainly expected to outgross 2017’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” ($791 million) and become the franchise’s new top earner.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” opens in theaters July 12 from Paramount Pictures.

'Mission: Impossible' star teases Tom Cruise leveling up his stuntwork in 'Dead Reckoning Part Two': 'He's unbelievable'

  • Tom Cruise is known for doing epic action stunts, including in the "Mission: Impossible" movies.
  • His costar Shea Whigham said that the franchise's eighth film is even wilder.
  • Whigham says that Cruise "does stuff that's gonna make number seven pale in comparison."

Insider Today

If you thought Tom Cruise's legendary "Mission: Impossible" motorcycle stunt was the wildest thing you'd see him do, think again.

Flying a helicopter ? Been there (and used those skills to terrorize Glen Powell , apparently). Scale a cliff in "Mission: Impossible 2" ?Child's play. Jump between buildings in "Fallout?" Well, he did break his ankle, but Cruise came out all right in the end and managed to pull off a high-altitude, low-open skydive stunt while it was healing.

The point is — Tom Cruise loves doing stunts . And according to Cruise's "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" costar Shea Whigham, that was just the beginning.

"Tom Cruise does stuff that's gonna make number seven pale in comparison," Whigham told Business Insider. "He's unbelievable in the next one."

BI spoke with Whigham at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere for his newest movie, "Lake George," a neo-noir film written and directed by Jeffrey Reiner. Whigham's character, Don, is a white-collar criminal who, upon his release from prison, gets a final task from his boss: kill the boss' girlfriend. Instead, Don teams up with the girlfriend, Phyllis (Carrie Coon), to take the boss down.

In "Dead Reckoning," parts one and two, Whigham plays Jasper Briggs, an agent on Ethan Hunt's (Cruise) tail. The actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he finished filming "Mission: Impossible 8" (a.k.a. "Dead Reckoning" part two) in May. Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie, however, are still working, Whigham said.

"What he's doing now, people are going to be floored," Whigham told The Hollywood Reporter. "He wants to make this one like an adventure film, and he and McQuarrie have an idea of what they want to do with it. So it's going to be amazing."

Everything We Know

Mission: impossible - dead reckoning part one and part two : release date, trailers, cast & more, we break down the characters, the ensemble cast, the plot, the release date, and more..

tom cruise mission impossible 2 motorcycle

TAGGED AS: Action , blockbusters , movies

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to watch Tom Cruise drive a motorcycle off a cliff. The seventh movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise will hit theaters this July, and it looks as though it will continue Cruise’s tradition of putting increasingly jaw-dropping, death defying stunts into each one of these action flicks. But, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will just be the first half of a two-part story, as the title suggests. Ahead of the premiere of the first half of Ethan Hunt’s next mission, we’ve done our own stunt work and gathered up everything you need to know about the Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two .

When Do Parts One and Two Come Out?

Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One , the seventh film in the Crusie-led film adaptation of the ’60s and ’70s espionage TV series , hits theaters soon, on July 12, 2023. Fans won’t have to wait (that) long for the conclusion, as Part Two is set to premiere slightly under a year later, on June 28, 2024. However, filming on Part Two is currently paused due to the Writers Strike, so it’s quite possible that the release date will be delayed again.

Both movies will be exclusive theatrical releases — and if they’re anything like Top Gun: Maverick , another Cruise movie from Paramount Pictures, the same studio behind Mission: Impossible , they won’t be streaming for a while. Maverick hit Paramount+ more than 200 days after its theatrical premiere.

Were it not for the COVID-19 pandemic, Dead Reckoning would have already been released, as Part One was originally slated for a July 2021 premiere. Delays due to the pandemic and subsequent COVID filming protocols (this is where Cruise’s viral, uh, virus rant originated) pushed the release back to 2022, then eventually to 2023.

Though it’s rare that any franchise ever truly ends, Dead Reckoning Part Two is expected to be the end of the franchise — at least as it currently exists.

Who’s Directing It?

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Christopher McQuarrie , the director who took Mission: Impossible to new heights starting with Rogue Nation , the fifth film in the franchise, returns for both Part One and Part Two of Dead Reckoning . McQuarrie also co-wrote both installments with Erik Jendresen .

Who’s In It?

Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Tom Cruise first played IMF agent extraordinaire Ethan Hunt in 1996 when the original Mission: Impossible hit theaters. He’ll have just turned 61 when Dead Reckoning Part One premieres, and Part Two will supposedly be his final appearance as the character, some 28 years later.

He’ll be joined by several returning cast members, including Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames as his fellow IMF agents Benji Dunn and Luther Stickell, respectively. Rebecca Ferguson returns as ex-MI6 agent Ilsa Faust, and Henry Czerny returns as former IMF director Eugene Kittridge, a character who hasn’t been seen since the original ‘96 franchise-starter. Vanessa Kirby returns as Alanna Mitsopolis, the black market arms dealer-turned-uneasy ally to Ethan Hunt, as does Frederick Schmidt , playing her brother Zola Mitsopolis.

Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

There are lots of new additions to the franchise as well. Hayley Atwell , best known for playing Peggy Carter in the MCU, joins as Grace, a character McQuarrie described as a “ destructive force of nature ” with “somewhat ambiguous loyalties” on the franchise-focused Light the Fuse podcast . Ozark’ s Esai Morales plays the film’s primary villain, Gabriel (Morales took over for Renfield star Nicholas Hoult , who dropped out due to scheduling issues), while Guardians of the Galaxy’ s Pom Klementieff plays an assassin who works for Gabriel.

Shea Whigham , recently seen in HBO’s Perry Mason , plays Jasper Briggs, an enforcer in a mysterious group known as “The Community” who is attempting to track Ethan Hunt down along with his partner, played by Greg Tarzan Davis . Charles Parnell ( Top Gun: Maverick ), Rob Delaney ( Deadpool 2 ), Indira Varma ( Obi-Wan Kenobi ), and Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock ) also star, as does The Princess Bride’ s Cary Elwes in an as-yet undisclosed role.

Recent Oscar-winner Angela Bassett , who played CIA director Erika Sloane, was originally supposed to reprise her role but couldn’t due to COVID travel restrictions.

The cast for Part Two hasn’t fully been revealed, though it’s probably safe to assume that most of the major actors from Part One will appear once more, assuming they survive the first movie. We do know, however, that Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham will join the ensemble, as will Parks & Rec’ s Nick Offerman , who plays Sydney, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

What Is Dead Reckoning About?

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Candidly speaking, the plots of the Mission: Impossible movies aren’t really their main appeal. They tend to be slick, serviceable MacGuffin chases that are an entertaining framework for banter and Tom Cruise’s insane stunts. But we do have some idea of what to expect from Dead Reckoning Part One . Here’s the official synopsis from Paramount:

“In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

Tracking down a weapon that threatens humanity before the bad guys get it? Dark forces from Ethan’s past? A deadly race around the globe, and a mysterious enemy? This is, in other words, pretty standard spy movie stuff, but few franchises are capable of pulling it off with as much style as Mission: Impossible . No specifics for the plot for Part Two have been revealed, so as not to spoil Part One , but it’s probably safe to say it won’t deviate too far from the tried and true formula, even as it serves to wrap up loose ends from  Part One .

How Long Will It Be?

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Part One is on the longer side. Without credits, it boasts a runtime of 2 hours and 36 minutes. The length of Part Two , of course, is TBD.

How Many Trailers Are There?

While there have been no trailers for Part Two yet, naturally, there have been a few for Part One . The first , which was light on dialogue, came out in May of 2022, more than a year before the film’s release. The full trailer came out a year later.

While they’re not quite trailers, Paramount also released a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes, one of which centers on Cruise’s most dangerous and ambitious stunt yet — driving a motorcycle off a cliff and parachuting to safety. It’s wild, and it certainly inspires a deeper appreciation for the work that went into the stunt, but if you don’t want to spoil the majesty of it all, it’s probably best to check it out after you’ve seen the film.

Is Tom Cruise Doing His Own Stunts?

Did you not see the featurette right there? The man drove a motorcycle off a cliff!

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One opens in theaters on July 12, 2023. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two opens in theaters on June 28, 2024.

Tom Cruise Rides His Motorcycle Off a Cliff in Action-Packed 'Mission: Impossible 7' Trailer

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is in theaters July 12.

Tom Cruise undertakes some of his most daring stunts yet in his latest action movie.

On Wednesday, Paramount Pictures released the trailer for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One , showcasing Cruise's Ethan Hunt as he embarks on his latest mission.

Footage from the trailer previews Hunt's clash with a villain played by Esai Morales during another globe-trotting adventure that threatens the entire Impossible Missions Force team.

The trailer teases Cruise and Morales' fight on top of a moving train, as well as a full look at Cruise's now-famous cliff jump from a motorbike stunt as Ving Rhames ' character Luther warns Hunt not to value saving the rest of the team higher than completing their mission.

"I don't accept that," Hunt says in response to the warning, as the trailer ends with him jumping from a destroyed train car before its falls to a body of water below.

In the new movie — the seventh in the Mission: Impossible franchise and its first entry since 2018 — Hunt and his team are tasked with tracking down "a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands," an official synopsis for the film reads promising, "a deadly race around the globe" throughout the movie.

"Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most," the synopsis adds.

Aside from Cruise, Rhames and Morales, the latest Mission: Impossible movie features a large ensemble cast including Hayley Atwell , Simon Pegg , Rebecca Ferguson , Vanessa Kirby , Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt, Cary Elwes , Mark Gatiss, Indira Varma and Rob Delaney.

The movie is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, a longtime collaborator of Cruise's who directed the previous two Mission: Impossible films and wrote Top Gun: Maverick . McQuarrie, 54, is also making the upcoming sequel Dead Reckoning Part Two , expected to release in 2024.

Tom Cruise has been forced to press pause on the eighth Mission: Impossible film, according to reports. While the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes initially delayed production, the actor managed to pick up where he left off in March. But in a new development, a technical malfunction has caused further complications.

Per The Mirror , cast and crew were forced to take a step back from filming after a malfunction with a £23million submarine occurred. More specifically, the gimbal used to lower the structure had jammed, requiring ongoing repairs.

Currently, the eighth Mission: Impossible is set to premiere on May 23, 2025, however with production pushed back, it's unknown if the film will retain this release date.

The complete cast of Mission Impossible 7 pose together on the red carpet.

In recent weeks, fans have spotted Tom, 61, in character as legendary operative, Ethan Hunt – specifically along the streets of Westminster, and at Trafalgar Square. The A-lister is yet to respond to reports of delays, however.

Set to pick up after the events of Dead Reckoning Part One, the upcoming instalment will follow Ethan and his team as they search for the Sevastopol submarine in a bid to destroy the Entity – an AI program gone rogue.

Appearing alongside Tom, fans are also awaiting the return of Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames and Pom Klementieff. With disavowed MI6 agent Ilsa Faust killed off in Part One, it's unclear if Rebecca Ferguson will resume her role in some capacity.

While details surrounding the film remain scarce, director Christopher McQuarrie has teased what's to come. Speaking to Collider , the 55-year-old noted that there will be an epic underwater sequence in Part Two. "Tom and I are constantly reevaluating our own work and asking ourselves how we could have done it better," the filmmaker began.

Tom Cruise and Director Christopher McQuarrie attend the Global Premiere of 'Mission: Impossible - Fallout' at Palais de Chaillot on July 12, 2018 in Paris, France

"We've done underwater sequences previously. We've worked underwater in Edge of Tomorrow, and we worked underwater in Rogue Nation, and we left very dissatisfied with those sequences. And we analyze why we were dissatisfied. What were all the factors working against us? The biggest being, not having real knowledge in that area. Everything you're looking at in Dead Reckoning is the application of knowledge from previous sequences."

Additionally, Christopher revealed that there will be another jaw-dropping aerial scene to rival those of Mission: Impossible – Fallout  and even Top Gun: Maverick .

Tom Cruise at Cannes film festival

Incredibly proud of the franchise, in 2023, Tom told HELLO! why it holds so much meaning for him.

Reflecting on his favorite memories from the franchise, the actor said: "I have so many that's very difficult. This is the first film [1996's Mission: Impossible] I ever produced. So to be here doing this decades later, you know, to be here in Leicester Square doing this premiere, it's very special.

"And also with them – to be able to look at this cast and know how hard they worked
we're very excited to be able to share it with audiences."
