Everything you want to know about cabins and suites on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

Gene Sloan

Picking a cabin on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship isn't always easy.

For starters, there are a huge number of cabins available on some Norwegian ships. The line is known for operating some of the world's biggest cruise vessels — ships so big that some have more than 2,000 cabins each.

However, it's not just the sheer volume of cabins that makes choosing a room on a Norwegian ship a challenge. It's also the number of cabin categories.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

On some of Norwegian's largest ships, including Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, there are a whopping 39 different types of cabins — each a little different from the last.

The backstory here is that Norwegian ships are designed to appeal to a wide demographic, including travelers willing to spend at a wide range of price points. That's prompted Norwegian to offer a wide mix of cabin types.

The room choices the line offers on its ships range from relatively low-cost, windowless inside cabins measuring just 135 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to massive, multi-room suites that can be more than 50 times that size.

At the high end, the accommodations are aimed at affluent travelers who, for whatever reason, prefer the megaship experience to being on a luxury ship, and they truly are among the most spectacular accommodations at sea. Some, such as the giant Garden Villas found on six Norwegian ships — Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star — sprawl over thousands of square feet and have as many as three bedrooms plus separate living rooms and dining rooms.

A Norwegian Cruise Line cabin primer

norwegian cruise line interior room

As is typical for many cruise ships, Norwegian vessels offer cabins in four broad categories: Windowless "inside" cabins, ocean-view cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

On newer Norwegian ships, the majority of the cabins are balcony cabins. Cruise lines over the years have discovered that cruisers will pay a significant premium to have a balcony with their cabin, and that's prompted a rush to add more balcony cabins to ships.

However, Norwegian's newer vessels are also known for a large number of suites, including suites that are part of upscale private complexes called The Haven.

On Norwegian's 4-year-old Norwegian Encore, for instance, 19% of the 2,040 cabins are suites — a huge percentage for a large, mass-market cruise ship. On Royal Caribbean 's 4-year-old Symphony of the Seas, which launched at almost the same time as Norwegian Encore, by contrast, just 7% of cabins are suites. On Carnival Cruise Line 's 4-year-old Carnival Panorama, just 3% of cabins are suites.

Here is a breakdown of the cabin types on Norwegian Encore, which is typical for the line's newer ships:

Inside cabins: 453 (22%). Ocean-view cabins: 111 (5%). Balcony cabins: 1,090 (53%). Suites: 385 (19%).

On older Norwegian ships (and, in general, all older cruise ships), there are fewer suites — sometimes far fewer. Only 1% of the cabins on Norwegian's oldest vessel, the 1998-built Norwegian Spirit, are balcony cabins.

Inside cabins and oceanview cabins make up nearly half of all cabins on Norwegian Spirit. Here is a breakdown of the cabins on that vessel:

Inside cabins: 387 (29%). Ocean-view cabins: 223 (17%). Balcony cabins: 708 (58%). Suites: 18 (1%).

The takeaway here is that you'll have a tougher time locking down a suite on an older Norwegian ship than on a newer vessel. If you're planning a cruise on one of the line's older vessels and a suite is a must, you'll want to book early to make sure you get one.

Within each of the four broad categories of cabins on Norwegian ships, you'll find multiple subcategories. Norwegian Encore, for instance, has 16 different types of suites alone, from a Club Balcony Suite Guarantee (Category MX) that measures 249 square feet to The Haven Deluxe Owner's Suite with Large Balcony (Category H2) that measures nearly six times that amount.

In general, Norwegian cabins have a modern look with clean lines and contemporary furniture, plus lots of storage cleverly worked into the design.

Inside cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

These are the cabins you stay in when you're on a tight budget. On any Norwegian ship, they are almost always the least expensive option when you're booking a cabin, and you can often save considerable money by booking an inside cabin versus an ocean-view or higher-level cabin.

What you'll give up, of course, is that ocean view. Your room will have four walls and no windows offering a glimpse of the outside world. In some cases, you'll find an inside cabin with a window opening up onto a hallway, but the view will be of nothing more than the hallway.

You'll also be in a very small room. Most inside cabins on the ship used in the examples above, Norwegian Encore, measure just 149 square feet. That's about 7% smaller than the typical ocean-view cabin on the vessel, which measures 160 square feet. The typical balcony cabin on Norwegian Encore is 175 square feet, not including a 30- to 110-square-foot balcony.

Related: Why windowless inside cabins aren't so bad

Of note, Norwegian is well-known for one particular type of inside cabin: unusually tiny, interior studio cabins designed for solo travelers.

Norwegian first added such cabins to a ship in 2010, on the then-new, 4,070-passenger Norwegian Epic. They were such a hit the line quickly began adding them to more vessels.

norwegian cruise line interior room

Measuring just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic (there are 128 in all) are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge with a bar and television area where solos can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

Since 2010, Norwegian has added similar solo cabin complexes with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships. Norwegian Encore has an 82-cabin solo complex spread over three decks.

The similarly sized Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss also have 82-cabin solo complexes, while the smaller Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway have solo areas with 59 cabins. The line's two newest ships, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva , have 73 solo cabins.

Related: I've been on nearly every Norwegian ship. Here are my first impressions of Norwegian Prima

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii- based Pride of America.

In most cases, these studio cabins have windows that face an interior hallway, though some solo cabins have windows and balconies.

Ocean-view cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

With an ocean-view cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Norwegian's newer ships have relatively few such cabins, as generally cabins that face outward are now built with balconies.

In general, ocean-view cabins on Norwegian ships are bigger than inside cabins but not quite as big as balcony cabins (when comparing their interior space). However, you sometimes can find ocean-view cabins that are significantly bigger than what is typical for a balcony cabin. This is sometimes the case for ocean-view cabins at the front of ships, where there can be relatively large but odd-shaped rooms with windows but no balconies.

Several recent Norwegian vessels have some quite large ocean-view cabins at their fronts that measure from 240 to 372 square feet. Dubbed Family Oceanview Stateroom with Large Picture Window, they are designed to hold up to five people and are marketed to families.

Balcony cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

Balcony cabins are what everyone wants these days, and Norwegian is delivering with huge numbers of balcony cabins on all its newest ships.

On the line's new Prima-class ships, which began debuting in 2022, around 57% of rooms are balcony cabins — and that number jumps even higher if you include suites on the ship that have balconies (see below for more details on suites on Norwegian vessels).

Including suites, the percentage of cabins on the first two ships in the series to debut (Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva) that have balconies jumps to 64%. The percentage is even higher on the line's newest Breakaway-plus class vessels, at a very high 72%.

norwegian cruise line interior room

The typical Norwegian balcony cabin has a contemporary look with clean lines and relatively minimalist furniture. Norwegian balcony cabins typically offer twin beds that can be converted into a queen bed, a built-in desk area and a sofa that often pulls out into an additional bed.

Balcony cabins on Norwegian ships typically measure a bit over 200 square feet, including the balcony space, but some can be significantly bigger.

On Norwegian Encore, a category of balcony cabins known as Large Balcony cabins (category B6) measure 331 square feet, due to enormous balconies that measure 155 square feet. The ship also offers aft-facing balconies (category B1) that measure up to 426 square feet, again due to unusually large balconies.

Suites on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

As mentioned above, Norwegian is known for a large number of suites on its ships. It's also known for some of the very biggest suites in the entire cruise industry.

The Garden Villas found on Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star are truly stunning, with living areas with glass walls looking over the pool areas of the ships. They have as many as three bedrooms plus separate living rooms and dining rooms.

Some of the Garden Villas measure as much as 6,694 square feet — more than twice the size of the typical home in the United States.

norwegian cruise line interior room

Among notable extras, the Garden Villas have private outdoor sundecks and courtyards with hot tubs. Additionally, the Garden Villas on Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star include private outdoor dining areas and steam rooms.

On more than half of Norwegian's ships, many of the top suites are part of an exclusive, keycard-accessed area called The Haven. Aimed at luxury travelers, The Haven complexes are located at the very top of the vessels and often come with private lounges, pools, sunning areas and even restaurants.

norwegian cruise line interior room

Depending on the ship, top suites can come with such perks as private butlers and concierges who attend to your every need; access to a private restaurant; a private suite lounge and sun deck; reserved seating in entertainment venues; and priority boarding and disembarkation.

Just be ready to look through a lot of suite types if you're booking a Norwegian ship. Some Norwegian ships have up to four types of Penthouse suites available, for instance, and three kinds of family suites.

Bottom line

Norwegian has something for everyone when it comes to cabins on its ships.

You can book a small, inside cabin that will get you on board one of the line's vessels at a very reasonable cost or a super suite that will set you back many times more but that comes with all sorts of perks.

Norwegian Prima Review: Real Photos, Plus Real Tips for the Ship's Pitfalls

The Norwegian Prima began sailing in the summer of 2022 as the newest style of vessel in Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet. In time, this ship's style will dominate NCL's newest offerings—there are five more versions of the Prima in the pipeline, starting with the Norwegian Viva in 2023, to be followed by four additional iterations through 2027. NCL's Prima Class differs in a few ways from the previous class of ship, Breakaway Plus, of which the Encore , Joy , Bliss , and Escape  are members (click any of those names to see our photo galleries on those vessels).

For starters, the Prima class, which can accommodate about 3,100 passengers (if fully booked at double occupancy), is a little smaller than its immediate predecessors, which can carry about 4,000 passengers per ship. That downsizing, and a slight but barely noticeable reduction in ship size, is projected by NCL execs to allow the new ships to call on smaller ports worldwide (such as Reykjavik , pictured above, where the ship was christened by pop star Katy Perry). That should open up some new opportunities on itineraries. Norwegian Prima :

Passengers: 3,099 (double occupancy) Crew: 1,506 Launched: 2022 Size:  143,535 gross tons, 965 feet long, 133 feet wide Speed: 23.2 knots Booking: 866/234-7350; ncl.com

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

While size and passenger density have been reduced on Prima , activities and restaurant choices were increased. Ostensibly, the shift is intended to offer customers more choice—but does that intention work out in practice? Are the changes to the core NCL cruise experience represented by the Prima class right for you?

At the invitation of the cruise line, we sailed on the inaugural run of the Norwegian Prima so we could appraise this new vacation product. Wherever possible, we took our own photographs so you can see exactly what things actually look like rather than their ideal depictions in promo images. In a few cases where access was not possible, we had to use the cruise line's highly edited renderings like the aerial view above.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

First stop: the cabins. With 946 units aboard, the  Balcony stateroom pictured here is the most common category on the ship. Balcony units range from 230 to 270 square feet (21–25 sq. m) in size, but those numbers don't mean much until you're inside. We were surprised at how spacious this category was. There's enough room in front of that sofa for morning exercises.  A single USB charging port is built into the base of each of the two lamps flanking the bed area. Behind the curtain, there's an outdoor balcony with two chairs and a small table.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

The desk area has a good variety of charging points, from European-style to U.S.-style and including another USB. Don't pack a hair dryer—there's one hanging underneath. A cube mini fridge for your use sits behind the panel to the left.  It's not possible to stream from your device to your stateroom television. Frommer's advice: Because there are only a few outlets of each type, you'll probably want to bring some adapters to maximize your charging options.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

The storage areas in the standard staterooms are located in the entry corridor, and they're not as plush as the décor implies. On the right side of the closet, which is accessed by two sliding doors, you'll find a safe and a few pullout platforms beneath clothes hangers. The other half of the closet, next to space for luggage, contains more clothes hangers but no traditional drawers. Instead, there are two slide-out metal-wire baskets, like an upscale version of the milk crates kindergartners use to store their crafts.

Also missing: robes and slippers. Those are supplied to passengers who book the most expensive cabins in the ship's high-priced private area, The Haven, but not, apparently, to the majority of guests. The omission could make going to the pool tricky, because passengers will have to return to their staterooms with only towels (free to borrow) over their swimsuits. Although the Norwegian Prima is marketed as a borderline-luxury ship, the lack of robes and slippers makes the main stateroom category decidedly less convenient than what you find in luxury hotels on land.

Frommer's advice : Pack your own robe and slippers for the Norwegian Prima . If you plan to visit the spa, make sure those slippers are waterproof (the spa doesn't supply them, either).

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

The bathrooms are large for a cruise ship, so that's a plus. No tubs, but the excellent showerheads can change the pulse and spray of the water (always strong, always available hot) with the push of a button. In the standard class of cabins, shampoo and soap are also dispensed by pushing buttons, via containers attached to the wall. We're glad the line has gotten rid of single-use plastics, but it would have been a bit more luxurious to know what brand of toiletries we're using.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

The most affordable staterooms on the Prima are Inside Cabins . There are 310 of those on board, and they're noticeably smaller (160–255 sq. ft./15–24 sq. m.) than the Balcony unit we've just seen, although you get the same closets and desk. We've got to hand it to Norwegian. More than a decade ago, the company made a commitment to making single-occupancy staterooms a standard category on ships, and that holds true on  Prima . There are 73 single-occupancy  Studios on board   (a rendering of one is pictured above). If you book a Studio, you don't have to pay extra for a single supplement. None of the single staterooms come with windows that face the sea, but solo passengers do get exclusive access to a small lounge with snacks.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

For the Prima class of ships, Norwegian is putting more juice into its Haven category of staterooms, which are substantially larger and cost substantially more than typical cabins and come with luxury trimmings like 24-hour butler service (a rendering of a Haven cabin is pictured above).

The Prima carries 107 of these Haven suites on board, all of them ensconced in their own private area of the ship—accessed by private elevators, privy to a private pool deck, private bar, and private restaurant—and all of them with private balconies encircling the back end of the Prima . On previous Norwegian ships, The Haven tended to be at the front of the vessel.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

NCL has promised "upgraded heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems," and this in-room thermostat, positioned by the main door, is a result. We found the cooling system was fairly responsive, and the Quick Cool button really did serve to chill the room speedily after a warm afternoon. While staterooms are equipped with a key card–operated power system, on our cruise our assigned cabin steward left a spare card in the slot at all times, so that energy-saving system was never in practice. However, our steward always made sure to close the balcony curtains whenever we left the room, which surely played a role in easing the energy strain of keeping things cool. Very useful: "Do Not Disturb" and "Make Up Room" signal buttons are built into the thermostat, so you don't have to hang signs on your door.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Now let's look at the rest of the ship. This attractive area is the Penrose Atrium , the three-level heart of the ship that spans decks 6, 7, and 8. The port (left) side looks out at the sea through wide windows. In this space you'll find a variety of staples: a Starbucks; two bars (one of them dedicated to whiskies); the desks for guest services, shore excursions, and Wi-Fi info; entries to the casino and a few restaurants; and a handful of shops for sundries, clothing, booze and candy, and Prima merch. There's a lot going on here all the time. Frommer's advice: Norwegian's standard Wi-Fi package ($30/day) expressly blocks TikTok and any video steraming, including clips as small as Twitter GIFs—so if you were planning on checking your security cameras back home, the basic package won't permit it. Instead, you have to get the most expensive package ($40/day).

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

The Prima is not the first Norwegian ship to have a go-kart track on the top decks—that was the Norwegian Joy in 2017—but the concept has certainly ballooned to newly giant proportions. Now this amenity, named the Prima Speedway ($15 for 8 minutes; weekly pass $199), has taken over large expanse of the top deck, crowning the middle of the ship with a three-level crown of track. Cars reach top speeds of 25 mph (40 km/hour). If go-karts are your thing, it's a real blast to roar around the top decks with nothing but the ocean on the horizon (you're protected from flipping overboard). But if you're not into go-karts, you might find the intrusion annoying. There were several times when we were on the balcony of our 15th-floor stateroom but could still hear the snarling of the vehicles on the racecourse four decks above. Frommer's advice:  If you want to use the Speedway, you must pack closed-toed shoes. To avoid hearing the noise of the Speedway above you when you're in your cabin, reserve a stateroom at the front or back of the ship. Prima Speedway minimum height: 55 inches (1.4 m); maximum weight: 265 lbs. (120 kg)

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

On the port side of Deck 18, The Bull's Eye ($40 for 50 mins for up to 6 people) is a dartboard game with a computerized tallying system. It's fun for group competition, and you'll find the Prima Speedway Bar around the corner for lubrication. There are a few dartboard stations you can reserve. Frommer's advice: Steer clear on windy or rainy days, because the exposed location makes this spot susceptible to bad ocean weather.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Next to The Bull's Eye, the tricked-out miniature golf course Tee Time ($10) keeps track of your score via tech hidden in your ball. On our cruise, the course didn't work very well; design flaws trapped our ball in non-guest areas, and on other holes, the screens were not responsive. But once those glitches are worked out, this should be a fun diversion. If you're exceptionally skilled, you might even win a prize. Frommer's advice: Like The Bull's Eye, Tee Time is an amenity that is difficult to use in bad weather. The course's location on the top deck makes it susceptible to ocean winds, so go while the ship is in port and on calm days.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

On the other side of Deck 18 from The Bull's Eye and Tee Time, The Stadium is where you find a bunch of free games such as pickleball, table shuffleboard, ping-pong, Foosball, and a no-beer-required version of beer pong. Although the area is technically topside, it's also under the Speedway track.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Who needs elevators? From Deck 18, you can hail the quickest way down to Deck 8: the dry body slides of  The Drop (pictured above) and  The Rush . Both are free. While the two entwined tubes of The Rush work like standard water slides—to kick things off, you propel yourself down—The Drop begins in a capsule with a trap door that triggers after a nerve-rattling countdown. Despite that terrifying start, neither The Drop nor The Rush are especially fast rides because you descend on a fabric raft that protects you from friction burns and slows you down. Still, neither slide is ideal for claustrophobes.  The Drop and The Rush minimum height: 48 inches (1.22 m); maximum weight 330 lbs. (149 kg)

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Frommer's advice:  Unless you like the idea of a metal body slide tube passing through your room's balcony, watch out for staterooms marked as "partially obstructed."

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

The one true water slide on board is The Wave (no charge), on which you ride an inner tube down a three-story chute into a fan-shaped basin that rocks you back and forth before spitting you back out.

The inner tubes are hoisted mechanically up to the starting point so you won't have to carry them.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

With all those diversions jamming the upper levels, there isn't much space left over for pools. This is the Pool Deck , located alongside The Wave on Deck 17. As you can see, the space is not huge. There are two small infinity pools on either side. If you can't find a place to relax here, go wandering and you'll find some additional places to lay out or sit that aren't near a pool, and the Sun Deck on Deck 18 has a small splash pool for young children.

But after infrastructure like the Speedway was given the most topside real estate, this is the swimming area Norwegian was able to squeeze into the midship territory on the sunny decks.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Norwegian would probably prefer that you pay extra for access to this space: Vibe Beach Club, near the back of Deck 17. It's the pool deck you need a ticket for.  Reserved for adults 18 and over and not as susceptible to shadows as the main Pool Deck, Vibe costs $99 a day or $209 for a week on most cruises. A portion of the fee includes a credit for drinks. You can't book ahead—you have to get passes for Vibe at Guest Services when you first board the ship. Yes, passes do usually sell out fast. The back end of the Prima past this area is reserved for the suite-only guests of The Haven. Between Vibe and The Haven, a huge chunk of prime real estate on the sunniest deck has been roped off for premium-paying passengers. That's where Norwegian's innovation attention is increasingly focused. If you were hoping for a ship that's replete with rambling pool decks for piña coladas and swimsuit ogling, the Prima isn't it.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

There are two more small Infinity Pools on Deck 8, found between the landing pads of the body slides and the complimentary Indulge food court (which we'll get to soon). But don't rely on these for sunbathing—because they're situated low on the sides of the ship, shadows predominate; remember that most of the time, only one side of the ship is in the sun.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Those Deck 8 infinity pools are part of  Ocean Boulevard , a dedicated outdoor space that loops all the way around the ship.

In the evening the area is beautifully lit for nighttime promenades, and you can use one of the many built-in, long-distance binoculars for spotting details in the distance. The walkway is fronted by the outdoor sections of a few restaurants with indoor dining rooms, expanding (in good weather, anyway) the available seating space.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Joggers beware: Although the pathway of Deck 8 technically goes all around the circumference of the Prima (sorry, wannabe Kates and Leos, but the tip of the ship's prow is off-limits), there are some tight squeezes that make the circuit tough for exercise runs.

Frommer's advice: If you plan to jog on the Prima , wake up early, before Deck 8 gets busy.

One improvement for the Prima : Galaxy Pavilion ($8 à la carte, $29 for a 1-hour unlimited package; weekly pass $199)   is in a space without windows, and the darkness heightens the experience. The ship's updated version of an arcade substitutes old-fashioned pinball machines and Pac-Man with a large selection of virtual reality games and motion simulators. The  Prima also has its own escape room ($15/person) attached to Galaxy Pavilion. There's lots of technology that could malfunction in this area—a few of the attractions weren't working during our cruise—but that risk seems to have been counterbalanced by filling the space with a lot of additional options.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Compared to other Norwegian ships, there have been plenty of of changes to the design of the main performance venue, here called the  Prima Theater & Club . Like an ultra-engineered version of your high school auditorium, it can be adapted to perform different functions depending on the time of day.  In the morning, the space can be configured as a lecture hall, but by evening the seating and sound baffles can be rearranged in a 725-seat configuration for live performances such as Summer: The Donna Summer Musical or Noise Boys . But you won't find Broadway- or Vegas-style shows every night. With Prima , Norwegian takes a step back from traditional stage-based entertainment and invests more in alternative attractions. The cruise line signed a deal with TV's Fremantle Media, giving Norwegian the rights to a slate of programming in a crowd-pleasing new format: game shows at sea. On our cruise, we saw the new  The Price is Right LIVE on NCL  (real prizes are awarded, which is why we can only show you this non-spoiler image). Audiences ate it up, cheering and screaming louder than we've ever heard during any cruise's besquined musical revue or comedy show. Press Your Luck and Beat the Clock get live versions, too, and the main seating floor can retract to create more performance space, which is also used for an officially sanctioned version of Supermarket Sweep .  Frommer's advice: Hot shows mean hot tickets—this is another thing you need to reserve as soon as you get on board. If you're shut out, the cruise line's official smartphone app now maintains a virtual queue that releases tickets from no-shows just before curtain time (although there's not a curtain anymore; it's a vast and expensive-looking video wall).

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

They named it the  Prima Theater & Club for a reason: After showtimes, the orchestra seats are cleared away, the multi-ring chandelier telescopes downward and comes alive with lighting, banquettes materialize, and what was once a theatre transforms into a huge three-level nightclub spanning decks 6, 7, and 8. Prima has small, dedicated spaces on Deck 7 for stand-up comedy (The Improv at Sea) and for sing-along hits (Syd Norman's Pour House), but there's no other dedicated dance hall on board—and with a space this big and elaborate, no other ones are needed.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Prima 's  Mandara Spa is 22% larger than the spa on NCL's previous ship, the Encore —as we said, part of Norwegian's strategy for the new class of ships is to supply more outlets for extra charges. This facility is laden with stuff you don't see on many ships: eight thermal offerings including a salt and steam room, infrared sauna, Finnish sauna, charcoal sauna, and ice room. The central feature of the thermal suite is these pools beneath a two-story waterfall (pictured here in a rendering—the pools were always full of guests on our cruise). The spa has 20 treatment rooms for à la carte offerings like acupuncture, Zero Gravity Wellness massage, a Flotation Salt Pool, and automated "Gharieni Wellmassage5D beds" that cost $12,000 apiece to install. This is also the area where the ship's hair salon and barber can be found. The ship books 28 Balcony staterooms that come with special access to the spa. Otherwise, guests gain access when the book a treatment, and day passes cost about $100 a day.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Considering so much attention was lavished on designing the spa, we would have hoped more attention had been paid to the details. The locker rooms are so tiny that disrobing guests can't help but bump into each other, and no slippers are supplied despite the hygiene and safety concerns of walking through the thermal suite and ice room barefooted. The spa's relaxation lounge (pictured in a rendering), positioned at the front of the ship, will give you 270-degree views of the ocean, but when we tried using the lounge, a relentless thump-thump-thump noise vibrated the air, giving us the first headache we ever got by going to a spa. It was so annoying that we got dressed and went upstairs a level to see what could have been causing such a disruption in the spa's most peaceful area.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

The treadmills of the Fitness Center are directly above the calm oasis of the spa's relaxation room, and the heavy footfall causes disruptive vibrations. That collision is an unfortunate design flaw. The Fitness Center, while very well equipped for a range of workout regimes, is a little cramped. One cruise guest told us that when she took a class that required her to lift a weight ball over her head, the room's ceiling was too low to complete the movement; the session leader put everyone on their knees first.  Frommer's advice : Avoid the spa's relaxation lounge during peak hours, when people are more likely to be jogging in the Fitness Center. (The spa's individual treatment rooms are not located beneath the Fitness Center.)

There are bars wherever you turn on the ship; drinking is a primary activity on board. One of the most interesting cocktail destinations is Metropolitan , located along a corridor among the dining-and-entertainment venues on Deck 8. Here, surplus food is turned into ingredients for inventive quaffs—usually, that's achieved by reducing extra food into a sugary liqueur.   This way, processed banana peels join sustainably made rum, walnut bitters, and orange bitters to become the Primadonna. Leftover strawberries and orange peels become La Madrina, which is like a sweeter Moscow mule. And discarded croissants are turned into syrup and mixed with rum, Cointreau, and lime juice to become the Croissant Mai-Tai. The results of this sustainability won't put you off. For each of the recipes we tried, we'd never have detected the orphaned food items unless someone told us they were part of the mix. Most of the drinks are pretty sweet—but then, so are a lot of popular vacation beverages served on cruise ships. Metropolitan's cocktails cost $12 each.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

If you like your cocktails more straightforward, the Observation Lounge , high up at the front of the ship on Deck 17, has wraparound views and plenty of air-conditioned places to sit. This is a popular spot for people who have reading or work to do.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Now on to the food. Here's where Prima planning can get hard. Although there are 15 food venues available to standard guests, not all are included in your cruise fare. There are no set mealtimes for free dining; you eat where and when you want. The largest space for complimentary dining is Hudson's (458 seats), which, unlike most main dining rooms on cruise ships, has a menu that doesn't change from day to day. If you like what's being served, you're going to love coming here again and again; if you don't, you have 10 other places to seek something else. We happened to like the dignified setting and panoramic views at Hudson's—the Smashburger at lunch was delicious, and the Thai steak and noodle salad had a pleasant zip. Nearby, The Commodore Room (228 seats) is a similarly styled tablecloth restaurant that is also free for any guest to use.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Every cruise ship has a standard buffet that comes free with your passage. This one is Surfside Cafe & Grill (seats: 180 indoor, 58 outdoor), adjoining the main pool. It's not as large as the buffet on many ships, taking up only a small portion of the port side of the ship. (The corresponding space on the starboard side is occupied by two restaurants that require extra fees and reservations.)

The range of offerings was adequate, although breakfast caters only to passengers with Western palates—the morning menu is heavy on eggs and bread. Asia-derived choices such as congee and fried rice, while served on competitors such as Disney Cruise Line, were not available on our Prima sailing.

Pizza, baked in diners' view inside a wide-mouth gas oven, made evening appearances, but wasn't served during the day. In fact, Prima has no all-day pizzeria options. (There are classy versions of pizza in the up-charged Onda by Scarpetta restaurant on Deck 8.) A pizza scarcity is hardly a deal-breaker for us, but we know there are some people who insist on a nonstop daily flow of pie on their vacations. On the plus side, Surfside is where you'll find that other cruise ship mainstay: the self-serve soft ice cream machine. You know you'll visit it more than the fitness center. Down on Deck 8, The Local Bar & Grill (seats: 120 indoor, 32 outdoor) offers complimentary pub-style food that's popular but on the heavy side: burgers, wings, fried fish, Reubens.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

The fifth and last restaurant that every passenger can visit for free is the most novel of the bunch. Indulge Food Hall (Deck 8) is set up like a food court at the mall—you visit different stations for different cuisines.  There are 11 stations under the Indulge umbrella, and most of them are self-explanatory: Coco’s (sweets), Garden Kitchen, Just Desserts, Just Ice Cream, The Latin Quarter, Nudls, Q Texas Smokehouse, Seaside Rotisserie, Tamara (Indian), and Starbucks. If you seat yourself at a standard table, you'll use a tablet to order from multiple venues and the dishes will be delivered, but if you sit at a counter, you'll order from that location's particular menu.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Of the bunch, Tamara, the counter for Indian dishes, seemed to attract the most repeat interest from fellow passengers over the length of our cruise, and with good reason: Selections (which changed between lunch and dinner) were flavorful, not afraid to venture into spicy territory, and provided a welcome break from the generally mainstream American choices served at the other free restaurants. Our favorites at Tamara: the chicken korma and the short rib dosa.

We also loved Nudls (pictured above), which prepares everything from pad thai to a mild Singapore street noodle to Geman pesto spaetzle.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Portion sizes throughout Indulge Food Hall are modest, but guests can order as many helpings as they want.  During the opening sailing of the Prima , we noticed a trend: Perhaps because of its variety and fun theming, Indulge Food Hall was sometimes more popular than it could easily handle. A central problem was that although there are 220 indoor seats, another 120 seats on the deck outside are only available in ideal weather.  Frommer's advice: If you can't find a table at Indulge Food Hall, schedule your meals for early or late during operating hours, or sit at a counter instead.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Once you have exhausted the complimentary restaurants, you'll have to pay a supplement fee per meal as well as secure a reservation to try any of the remaining nine dining venues. Reservations may prove to be the most challenging part—these speciality choices have dramatically less seating than the free ones.

Hasuki (pictured above), a hibachi showplace for Japanese cuisine with flair, seats just 62. Across the corridor, fine sushi is served at Nama (37 seats). Around the corner at Le Bistro , an 88-seat dining room crammed with arresting floor-to-ceiling chandeliers, the menu leans toward rich French classics.  Frommer's advice: If you know you want to sample the specialty restaurants, buy a Specialty Dining Package (SDP) ahead of time. That will add roughly $25 to $45 per meal in additional costs. Keep in mind, though, that as more guests purchase packages, the more reservations you'll need—book your seats as soon as you can.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

On Deck 8—one deck above the specialty restaurants mentioned above—passengers can opt for successful upscale Mexican at Los Lobos (seats: 70 indoor, 42 outdoor) and high-minded Italian at the elegant Onda by Scarpetta (seats: 81 indoor, 40 outdoor), pictured above. On Deck 6, you have Cagney's Steakhouse (125 seats) as a pay-extra option.  Happily, the food across the ship is good, so if you never spring for a surcharged restaurant, you won't be eating slop. At the specialty restaurants, though, you can detect a difference in creativity of preparation, ingredient quality, and plating finesse.

Remember that wherever outdoor seats are listed, they will only be used in good weather. Depending on your cruise, that may drastically cut down on availability. In fact, capacity issues could lie ahead, as the ship is scheduled to sail in the chilly North Sea multiple times in 2023 and 2024.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Finally, up on Deck 17, the additional-fee restaurants are Palomar for seafood (seats: 75 indoor, 56 outdoor) and the popular Food Republic (pictured above with a view of The Rush tubes; 70 seats) for shared plates bearing riffs on global street food such as pork belly bao and firecracker shrimp. Frommer's advice:  By carving the ship into more intimate spaces, Norwegian put increased pressure on the space provided. Most of the speciality restaurants are so tiny that availability threatens to be an issue, and at several of them the outdoor seating will not be opened if the weather turns out to be poor, so make your reservations at the earliest opportunity.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

Yes, down on Deck 6 there's a casino. It has table games, lots of slots, a bar, and the only place they'll let you smoke. There's also a small humidor nearby for cigar puffers.

Norwegian Prima: ship facts, ship photos, details, tips, and hacks

All in all, Norwegian Prima is a comfortable, handsome ship with tons of things to see and do. Although we found the standard staterooms were generally superior to those of many other lines, their trappings promise a sense of luxury that the amenities don't meet—pack that robe and those slippers! But it would be foolish to argue that the company hasn't equipped this ship with more options and amenities than you'll probably be able to use. The  Prima  simply offers a better product to those who are able to pay extra. The more restaurants and activities that Norwegian's designers stuff into ships, the less deck space for free pool days there will be. There will also be more opportunities for disappointment for guests who either can't afford to keep paying up-charge fees or don't have the know-how or energy to keep working to score reservations.

If you sail aboard the Norwegian Prima , you'll be at the cutting edge of atmosphere and amenities in mass-appeal cruising, but you'll also have to learn how to secure your place in dwindling public spaces and how to jockey for passes at Guest Services to make sure your schedule remains full of the things you came to enjoy. And if you were banking on spending lots of time basking on expansive pool decks, the restricted availability of those topside spaces could mean the Prima is not the ship for you. True luxury cruise lines take care of everything for you—true luxury is all-inclusive. Norwegian is all about extra charges. But as long as you know that sailing the glittering Prima will require some extra outlay and advance elbow grease from you, you'll find it a busy addition to the vacation landscape. In 2022, early 2023, and winter of 2023–24, Norwegian Prima will sail mostly to the Caribbean on 7-night itineraries from Port Canaveral near Orlando; Miami;  Galveston, Texas; and New York City.  In summer 2023 and summer 2024, the ship will operate 10- and 11-day one-way runs between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Southampton, England.

Is there such things as NCL cocktail menus? I have struggled with other Cruise Lines, many don't have a printed menu from which you can peruse, and if there is one it is a limited list. You see the bar tender carrying interesting drinks to other tables and wonder what they are as they are not on the list.

I would like to make full use of the free drinks and try lots of different cocktails! 😵 ‍ 💫 🤕 🤣

Cool Cruiser

There were at least 3 different menus on bars on the epic, but of course not with 100s of drinks. Some bartenders can make a lot of different things though.

This recent thread from BirdTravels collects all of the bar menus from the Encore... I used this to make a personal 'to drink' list for my sailing next week. And of course, when an interesting drink goes by, you can always flag down a waiter to say "I'll have what she's having..."

@Hadacareer provided a pretty comprehensive list.  I've gotten to know bartenders/servers on various trips and when they get a feel for what you like, they'll often suggest things off-menu that you might like.  Like an alcoholic Netflix!

I took my niece and her friend on a 2019 cruise where I introduced them to Toasted Almonds (amaretto, Kahlua, and cream.)  By the end of the cruise, the bartender had subbed the cream for soft ice cream mix, added creme de cacao, and once -- by accident -- added peach schnapps.   My blood sugar went up just watching her.  🙂

Yumm!  My next wish cocktail is going to be the smoky old fashioned…

Wow, thank you for this list, looks amazing!

A lot of these that interest me have 4/5/6 ingredients in them, quite a few measures or alcohol, just wondering for example if :

BUSH WHACKER 0.25 OZ STOLI VANILLA VODKA 0.5 OZ BAILEYS IRISH CREAM LIQUEUR

0.5 OZ DISARONNO AMARETTO LIQUEUR

0.5 OZ KAHLÚA LIQUEUR 2 OZ ISLAND OASIS ICE CREAM MIX 2 OZ ISLAND OASIS PIÑA COLADA MIX TOP WITH CHOCOLATE SYRUP

would be under $15 and inclusive of the Drinks package?

Not exactly a NCL Menu, but here is a list of cocktails that I created for a meet & greet a few years back. Enjoy!

Check the menus on the linked Encore review from BirdTravels, but most of these on-menu drinks are under the $15, even if they have multiple alcohols in them that would normally be over.

You have to learn to play the NCL game, but you'll catch on fast.

For example, the whiskey bar has a Woodford Reserve old fashioned on their menu for $14.  But Woodford is normally $23, so if you ask for it at another location you'd be charged $9.

Mojito flight with 6 small mojitos will cost you $5 ($20 menu price and you pay the difference), but you can order all six full size at $14 each for no charge.

Hey @CardFanDubG ,

Thanks for the Beverage List, it looks a-mazing. I had come across it in the past, but completely forgot about it!

I love Pisco Sour, but I can't find it anywhere on the NCL menus I found online, yet, it is included in your list. Does that mean I could ask a bartender on NCL to make me one as part of the Open Bar package?  I usually drink beer and wine, but this time I have the Open Bar Free at Sea package (on a TA with PLENTY of sea days), and so I'm wondering how to make the best use out of it, by trying different cocktails!

I searched all photos of drink menus and couldn't find anything but a  different mango frz drink.

Please note that the "Zombie Brain Shot" on this list is not a standard NCL drink.  They will make you one if you give them the recipe but I advise you pass.  Its a terrible novelty drink.

I know this is not exactly on topic but has anyone ever had or know how to make the Lavender Mist?  We stayed in the Haven last year on our cruise to Cabo San Lucas and I drank these all week and loved them.  No one at any other bar knew what they were and have not been able to find anyone outside NCL Haven that knows how to make them.  I would love to have the recipe to make them at home, any help is appreciated!

Thanks for this info.

1.  We are going to get in trouble with the pink feathered one for posting on an old thread

2. I posted the recipe in your Lavender Mist thread (I posted the recipe for NCL’s Lavender Patch)

I rely on Prof Cruise for all menus on cruise lines. Most updated as of 2023 - I linked you to the NCL drink page. She has it all -   Drink menus, room service, specialty - all of it. amazing.

The drink menus are from December 2022 I think? Recent.

I don't know that one - but I do like the lavender patch - similar?

I looked it up, the ingredients sound like they could make a lavender mist.  Maybe they call it different things.... lol

Thanks, gonna try it!

Unless they have made changes in recent months, the brand is Island Oasis!

island oasis is indeed the brand for all the mixes that come in cartons: pina colada, strawberry daiquiri, banana daiquiri, etc.   (by the way, don’t look at the nutritional statement and calorie count printed on the side of the carton!) island oasis may be a brand unique to the restaurant supply industry and not available for retail purchase. many of the syrups, such as watermelon or simple syrup, come in bottles and I’m not sure if they are the same brand.

norwegian cruise line interior room

I tried to spend as little as possible on Carnival's newest cruise ship. I recommend shelling out for better food and more fun.

  • I turned down almost all upcharged amenities during my four-day Carnival Firenze cruise .
  • The new ship has more complimentary family-friendly activities than some of its competitor's latest vessels.
  • But snubbing the up-charged food made for a less-than-amazing cruise.

Insider Today

Looking for a vacation that lets you ball on a budget? You'll certainly hit your "budget" requirement on Carnival's new Firenze ship — so long as you don't expect to truly ball out.

Cruises are an economical vacation option . After all, what other ticket includes unlimited food, a hotel room, activities, and the opportunity to see several destinations in one trip — all for less than $80 a day like Carnival is offering in 2024?

But if you're unwilling to spend more than the base fare, you could have a pretty different vacation experience from your peers who are ready to pay-to-play. At least, that's how I felt during my first Carnival cruise in mid-May on the new Firenze.

My stubborn stance against upcharged services resulted in a less-than-amazing experience.

norwegian cruise line interior room

Josh Weinstein, president and CEO of Carnival Corp, the cruise line's parent company, told investors in late June that the company wants to continue to be known as a "cost leader" in the industry.

Its new ship is a great example of this. Carnival says it's seeing strong demand from its US market. But instead of building a new vessel, the company acquired Firenze and its sister ship from Costa Cruises, another Carnival Corp brand, in 2022.

Besides WiFi, I refused to front for Firenze's up-charged activities and services.

norwegian cruise line interior room

I went on Carnival Firenze for work, which meant I had to cave on the ship's premium WiFi at $85 for all four nights.

Internet connectivity, specialty dining, and drinks packages are always extra on mass market ships . But over the last few years, cruise giants have added more irresistible pay-to-play amenities to their vessels, all while still luring travelers in with affordable base fares.

On Norwegian's newer ships , for example, this means paying $10 for a round of mini-golf or $29 for an hour at the VR arcade.

Not bad compared to Royal Caribbean's new Icon of the Seas , where travelers have to pay $200 for the fanciest restaurant or $49 for a ropes course that could be completed in less than a minute.

To Carnival’s credit, Frienze had more complimentary family-friendly amenities than some of its competitors’ newer ships.

norwegian cruise line interior room

The mini-golf course wasn't nearly as flashy as Norwegian's. But mini-golf is mini-golf, no matter the number of bright lights and animated courses.

The same was true for Firenze's ropes course. While it didn't have the same thrilling floor drop as Icon of the Seas', the multi-part walkway was longer, more diverse, and, more importantly, free.

I much preferred it to the one on Icon.

Families could spend their afternoons shooting hoops, going on the waterslides, and competing over board games — all without spending a cent.

norwegian cruise line interior room

The arcade was one of the few activities that wasn't free. Then again, they rarely are.

But don't book Firenze if you're seeking a quiet, relaxing ship. I struggled to find a peaceful public space where I could churn out some work without being distracted by the loud music and guests.

The only truly quiet space could've been the spa. But again, I wasn't going to pay for a massage.

In the eveing, I passed the time by catching the nightly movies and attending the theater's shows.

Just know that the latter isn't a must-do. Some singers in the cheesy song-and-dance production "Dear Future Husband" were painfully off-key.

And if you want to munch on a bag of popcorn during the movie, you'll have to pay $4. Smelling the buttery snack without having one in my hands was a torturous tease.

Several of Firenze’s bars — like Piano Bar 88 — featured live musicians, too.

norwegian cruise line interior room

Moda Bar and Lounge also had singers, if you count karaoke night.

But if you want a drink to accompany the entertainment, you'll have to spend about $13 for cocktails and $9 for beers and seltzers.

So, late-night foosball it was — for four nights in a row. At least it was free.

Activities like live music and board games are almost always free on cruise ships.

norwegian cruise line interior room

But that doesn't exempt Carnival Firenze from the industry-wide push for more pay-to-play amenities . There's a reason the company saw a spike in onboard spending in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same time last year — despite rising ticket prices.

I doubt it's solely because of increased participation at Firenze's live "Deal or No Deal" game show, which starts at $25 to play. Or the $4 shuttle from the port at Ensenada, Mexico on day three to downtown (which I regret not paying for).

In retrospect, I wish I had fallen for Firenze's upcharged foods.

norwegian cruise line interior room

Norwegian and Royal Caribbean's newer ships had complimentary dining that was as good as, if not better, than the premium options. I still crave Norwegian Prima's free food hall .

I can't say the same for my no-fee dining experience on Firenze.

The ship had six specialty restaurants ranging from teppanyaki to steaks.

norwegian cruise line interior room

The cruiseliner has a kitschy Italian theme, as its name might suggest. But if I had wanted to continue the Italian tune with some shrimp scampi and burrata at the Il Viaggio restaurant, I would've had to drop more than $40.

So, instead, I had my nightly meals in the mediocre main dining room, which served the same dinner dishes as the buffet.

None of my Carnival Firenze dinners were stellar, and finding a piece of plastic in my pasta didn't help, either.

I always have juice with my breakfast at home.

norwegian cruise line interior room

But continuing my ritual on Firenze would've meant coughing up $5 per glass. It was tempting, especially as the main dining room server stopped by every table with a tray of the colorful concoctions.

For lunch, I bounced around options like the Guy Fieri-branded burger shack and the pizza, Italian-Mexican fusion, and Italian sandwich stands.

norwegian cruise line interior room

My no-spend requirement meant I had to snub the almost $40 teppanyaki lunch, $1.50-a-piece empanada, and $6 Korean barbecue steak pizza (the pizza stand had free and upcharged pies).

That meant none of my lunches were standouts. The burgers were too heavy (mine came with a slab of fried mozzarella), the salsa verde at the sandwich stand was inedible, and the buffet was forgettable.

Even worse, the chicken wings at the buffet cost extra. Oh, Carnival.

The only craveable lunch was at La Strada Grill, a tucked-away buffet with sandwiches and fresh vegetables.

norwegian cruise line interior room

It was the only light and fresh meal I had on the ship. I couldn't understand why it and another salad stand were closed until the last day of the cruise.

At that point, I had already grown tired of all the heavy foods.

norwegian cruise line interior room

But a quick pick-me-up at the coffee shop would have required me to break my no-spend rule, too.

The buffet had free coffee, Lipton, and Bigelow's green tea bags. But if you want something closer to your neighborhood coffee shop, the onboard café charges $4.50 for a latte and $4 for a doughnut.

I don't remember the last time I drank that much Lipton tea.

Activities like the afternoon 'Tea Time' also had a cost barrier.

norwegian cruise line interior room

Tea bags at the program were $1.50, unbeknownst to me until I was seated. After expressing disinterest in paying, I was later offered the buffet's teas.

Caffeine might be mandatory if you stay in the cheapest windowless cabin.

norwegian cruise line interior room

Like any mass-market cruise ship, the most affordable option was a windowless interior stateroom and letting Carnival assign me my cabin.

Traveling alone for work meant I had to eat the solo supplement . My interior cabin, booked fairly last minute, cost $735, including $64 in optional gratuities.

But in 2024, the cheapest itinerary starts shy of $360 per person, including taxes and fees, for the same four-night sailing — from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico — as the one I went on.

Carnival put me in one of Firenze’s accessible, wheelchair-friendly rooms.

norwegian cruise line interior room

This meant the shower — a curtain surrounding floor drains — was one of the largest I've had at sea. And all the furniture came pushed against the wall, making the cabin feel spacious for someone without physical disabilities.

But where the stateroom excels in size, it fails in design.

It was one of the ugliest rooms I've ever stayed in. The furniture looked dated, the bathroom had almost no storage, and there were no bedside outlets.

That said, the starting price of $90 a day is hard to beat. At least it encouraged me to spend more time around the ship than inside my windowless dungeon.

Overall, my no-spend Carnival Firenze cruise was fine. Not amazing. Not life-changing. Just fine.

norwegian cruise line interior room

The surplus of complimentary onboard activities rivaled that of more expensive ships. But if my meals weren't lackluster, they were bad.

I'm sure I would have a different review if I had spent an additional $50 on the steakhouse or $100 on the chef's table . But the less-than-desirable complimentary food ultimately plagued my four nights at sea.

If you're considering cruising on Carnival Firenze , I'd recommend paying for at least one of the specialty restaurants. The money will be worth skipping the buffet and uninspiring dining room.

The Best New Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. The list includes everything from expedition and luxury yacht-style vessels to reimagined ships and megaships – plus the debut of a brand-new cruise line.

When it launches in 2025, the vessel will be the line's seventh ship and is expected to carry 6,000 passengers. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). The following ships for the line are anticipated to be even larger, with the fifth and sixth Prima-class vessels (debuting in 2027 and 2028) weighing as much as 171,000 gross tons.

Ukraine war latest: Moscow claims territory gains in key area; Ukraine 'sends scores of drones' to attack Russian border regions

Moscow claims its forces have captured two villages near the city of Donetsk, as fierce fighting continues in the east. Meanwhile, Russian officials reported that Ukraine had sent some 36 drones to attack border regions in overnight attacks.

The Ukrainian military has noted further fierce fighting near Donetsk villages claimed by Russia.

The Russian defence ministry said yesterday Spirne and Novooleksandrivka had been captured by troops on the ground (see our 6.22am post for more detail).

The eastern Pokrovsk front, which includes Novooleksandrivka, remained the site of the fiercest fighting, with 42 assaults repelled out of a total of 142 battles over the past day, the Ukrainian military said.

It is not clear whether the Ukrainian military is denying that the villages have fallen into Russian hands, however.

Spirne is located in the east of the Donetsk region, near the border with Ukraine's Luhansk region, while Novooleksandrivka lies some 130km further west.

Ukrainian convicts are being offered their freedom in exchange for their service in the war against Russian invaders - including murderers.

Those convicted of rape, sexual assault, murdering two or more people, or crimes against Ukraine's national security aren't eligible.

Journalists from the Associated Press visited a rural penal colony in southeast Ukraine.

They watched as several convicts assembled next to a barbed wire fence to hear an army recruiter offer them a shot at parole.

"You can put an end to this and start a new life," said the recruiter.

"The main thing is your will, because you are going to defend the motherland. You won't succeed at 50%, you have to give 100% of yourself, even 150%."

This comes as Ukraine expands its military draft criteria to cope with mounting losses, battlefield shortages and the need for rest for frontline troops.

And its recruiting efforts have turned, for the first time, to the country's prison population.

Prisoners are able to qualify for their conditional release after an interview, medical exam, and a review of their conviction.

Once screened, paroled inmates are rushed to basic training at camps where they learn how to handle weapons and other combat fundamentals, before joining their units.

More than 3,000 prisoners already have been released on parole and assigned to military units after such recruitment was approved by parliament in a controversial mobilisation bill last month, Ukrainian deputy justice minister Olena Vysotska told AP.

Some 27,000 more inmates could potentially be eligible for the new programme, according to justice ministry estimates.

"A lot of the motivation comes from [inmates] wanting to return home a hero, and not to return home from prison," Ms Vysotska said.

However, Ukrainian officials are keen to draw a distinction between the Russian version of this programme - which saw thousands of convicts join the infamous Wagner mercenary group.

Those convicts-turned-troops were sent to the most brutal battles en masse, but the Ukrainian programme aims to integrate the inmates into regular frontline units.

The country has a prison population of some 42,000, according to figures forwarded by the government to the EU.

These images show members of Ukraine's 110th Colonel-General Marko Bezruchko Separate Mechanised Brigade firing a "vampire" rocket system at Russian troops in Donetsk.

The "Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment", or vampire, is a compact and palletised rocket launching platform.

It's capable of converting a standard pickup truck into a launcher.

Several vampire systems where reported to have been included in the latest US aid package for Ukraine.

In our 6.22am post, we reported that Russia claimed to have captured two more villages in the region over the weekend, although this has not been independently verified.

A Russian ballistic missile attack on Ukraine's Dnipro has injured seven people, including a 15-year-old boy, according to officials.

Serhiy Lisak, governor of the wider Dnipropetrovsk region, said scores of residential buildings had been damaged and one of those injured had been hospitalised.

Mr Lisak added that a separate Russian drone and artillery attack on the Nikopol district last night damaged five residential buildings, power and gas lines and other infrastructure.

Around seven weeks ago, Russia opened a new front in its war on Ukraine by launching an incursion into the northeastern Kharkiv region.

After reports of stunning early progress amid faltering defences, gains appear to have slowed.

What's the latest?

Much of the recent fighting has centred around the Vovchansk aggregate plant, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

You can see Vovchansk highlighted alongside Lypsti (which we'll be discussing below), in this map...

The US-based thinktank said reports indicate that Ukrainian forces have "encircled Russian forces of unknown strength" at the aggregate plant.

Ukrainian forces are not conducting assaults directly on the plant because it would lead to unnecessary casualties, according to a Ukrainian journalist on the ground.

It's thought at least some element of the Russian 83rd Airborne Brigade is being pinned down inside the plant.

However, "geolocated footage published on 30 June (yesterday) indicates that Russian forces recently advanced within central Vovchansk along Soborna Street", ISW said, suggesting Moscow's troops are still progressing in some respects.

"The combat situation in Vovchansk is dynamic... and it is unclear if Ukrainian forces would currently be able to consistently prevent Russian forces from leaving or reaching positions at the aggregate plant."

Elsewhere, Russian forces recently advanced north of Kharkiv City near Lypsti amid continued fighting in the area yesterday, it added.

Separately, we heard from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy yesterday, who claimed that Russian forces were suffering six casualties for every one Ukrainian casualty in Kharkiv.

Russia's air bombardment of the region continues, with emergency servicemembers working to tackle a blaze and treat wounded after a guided bomb attack killed at least one person yesterday.

Ukraine sent scores of drones into Russian border territories in overnight attacks, according to the defence ministry in Moscow.

In a series of morning updates, the ministry said Russia's air defence systems had destroyed 36 drones at Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod.

Ukraine has not commented.

The governors of the Bryansk and Kursk regions said that there were no injuries or extensive damage caused, although Russian officials rarely share the true extent of Ukrainian attacks.

Moscow claims its forces have seized two further villages east of the city of Donetsk.

In a statement released yesterday, the Russian defence ministry said Spirne and Novooleksandrivka had been captured by troops on the ground.

Ukraine's General Staff noted "heavy fighting" was taking place near the villages, but did not admit to any territorial losses.

Russia has steadily advanced east of Avdiivka in recent months after capturing the city in February following a bitter stalemate.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

We'll be bringing you the latest updates throughout the day, but here's a quick reminder of the key things you need to know as we enter a new week.

Arrest warrants issued

Last Tuesday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Russia's former defence minister and its military chief of staff for allegedly attacking civilian targets in Ukraine.

The court accused Sergei Shoigu and General Valery Gerasimov of war crimes and the crime against humanity of inhumane acts.

It brought the total number of warrants against senior Russian officials to eight since the start of the war - with Vladimir Putin among them.

Though Kyiv hailed the move, there's no immediate prospect either man will be arrested as Russia is not a member of the ICC, meaning it has no jurisdiction there.

In theory, they'll only face arrest if they choose to set foot in one of the ICC's 124 signatory states.

EU begins membership talks with Ukraine and Moldova

The EU officially launched membership talks with Ukraine last week in what Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a "historic day" for his country.

There are several stages ahead in Ukraine's years-long effort to join the bloc. Negotiations themselves are also unlikely to begin for several months.

But the launching of official talks sends a message of solidarity to Ukraine beyond the financial support provided by EU nations so far.

Later in the week, the European Union signed a security agreement with Ukraine.

The deal entrenches the EU's commitment to help Ukraine in nine areas of security and defence policy - including arms deliveries, military training, defence industry cooperation and demining.

NATO appoints new chief

NATO appointed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as its next secretary-eneral.

The outgoing leader of the Netherlands will take charge of the world's biggest security organisation at a critical time for European security.

Putin calls for banned weapons to be produced

Vladimir Putin called for Russia to resume production of intermediate-range missiles that were banned under a now-scrapped treaty with the US.

The Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty was regarded as an arms control landmark when then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and US president Ronald Reagan signed it in the 1980s.

It banned ground-based missiles with a range of between 310 and 3,410 miles (500 to 5,500 km).

The US withdrew from the treaty in 2019, citing Russian violations.

"We need to start production of these strike systems and then, based on the actual situation, make decisions about where - if necessary to ensure our safety - to place them," Mr Putin said.

We're pausing our live coverage for now.

You can scroll below to catch up on the latest developments, and we'll be back with our regular coverage tomorrow.

Six people have been killed in a Russian attack on a small town in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, a Ukrainian official has said.

A further eight people have been injured, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said.

Infrastructure, a shop and residential buildings in Vilniansk have also been damaged, he added.

The strike comes after five people were killed in the Kursk region of Russian due to a Ukrainian drone attack.

Two young children were also injured in the strike on the village of Gorodishche, around 73 miles (118km) from the Ukrainian border, Kursk governor Alexey Smirnov said.

Two other people were injured and were in a "serious condition" in hospital, he added.
