Shane Smith & the Saints Announce Anticipated New Album “Norther”

Few if any outfits in country and roots music can make their music rise to the epic and weighty level that Shane Smith and the Saints achieve through launching reverberative moments that you don’t merely enjoy, but experience deeply in a way that rings in your soul well after the final note has tolled. It’s been five years since devotees of the Austin-based band have experienced this effect in album form, though they’ve had plenty of opportunities to take in these cinematic moments in the live context, not to mention seeing them in person on the hit show Yellowstone . But the time has come for a new album. To be called Norther , it will be released on March 1st, 2024. Suffice to say, it’s a highly anticipated one. “We’d be on the road doing shows, and there would be a 48-hour gap where we’d fly into Dallas and try to record everything we possibly could, then fly right back to wherever the bus was. It was like that for the entirety of the recording process,” says lead singer and songwriter Shane Smith, whose barrel-chested baritone can ring like missives from the Almighty. Joining the band’s namesake is the barefoot Bennett Brown on fiddle, guitarist Dustin Schaefer, bassist Chase Satterwhite, and drummer Zach Stover. Along with top flight musicianship, The Saints can also turn in four-part harmonies that you feel down to your bones, which helps underpin their blustery and emotional music with that much more meaning and mystery.

Beau Bedford produced the set, and even though Shane Smith and the Saints have sold out shows at prestigious places such as Red Rocks and the Ryman Auditorium, the hope is the new album will be the impetus to take the band to the next level.   “It’s like you can’t help but feel like you’ve paid your dues to get to a certain spot, but once you get there, you realize you’re just starting to touch the surface of the bigger picture,” Smith admits. “At the end of the day, it still feels like we’re getting discovered. But maybe that’s what it’s all about … If you spend 10 years playing dive bars and small clubs almost every single night, and you go to the merch booth after every show and hang out with the fans until the staff literally kicks you out, you get to turn those fans into friends. That’s how we built this thing.” Followers of Shane Smith will already be familiar with some of the new songs. “Fire in the Ocean” was first featured on Yellowstone and released in 2022 along with the song “Hummingbird.” Another new song “The Greys Between” was released in late September, and they’ve revealed the song “Adeline” as part of the new album announcement. Norther is now available for pre-order/pre-save . TRACK LIST: 1. Book of Joe 2. Fire in the Sky 3. Adeline 4. The Greys Between 5. Navajo Norther 6. Field of Heather 7. Wheels 8. All the Way 9. Hummingbird 10. 1,000 Wild Horses 11. It’s Been a While 12. Everything and More 13. Fire in the Ocean

Seen these guys a few times, and I honestly do not understand their appeal. Not a single song caught my ear.

But I wish them luck, they’ve got plenty of fans.

Shane Smith is a big band that feels small. I’ll miss them playing in smaller venues, still I’m happy their rise feels earned and they’re still putting in tons of time on the road coast to coast. Looking forward to this album.

Definitely an anticipated album. Feels like a long time to wait for it’s release

2nd favorite band, only behind Turnpike. Really looking forward to this.

The only song that catches my ear from these guys is ‘Cocaine Habit’. Ironically according to the credits, Ryan Engleman from the Turnpike Troubadours played lead guitar on that track. Go figure.

Seeing them Tuesday night is a small club in Lexington KY. Can’t wait.

I live across the river from Louisville and have to be at work for parent teacher conferences until 7 so I have to miss it, pretty bummed. Wish they were there Monday instead. That’s where I discovered them, opening for Turnpike back in like 2017

' data-tf-not-load src=

Saw them at a small club in Baton Rouge back in Feb. Live, his voice and the band are mesmerizing. I’ve been into them since Geronimo, and I couldn’t believe how powerful his voice is live. They rarely come through Louisiana, but I’d love to see them again, with the new album, if they come anywhere close.

Good news. Looking forward to this.

One of my favorite live shows. Can’t say I adore every song but every show I’ve been to I’ve always felt like Shane and them appreciate and respect the money I spent. Talking to him at shows he seems genuinely thankful people show up and somebody I don’t mind wanting good things for.

Excited to have pre ordered.

The worst thing about living outside of the main Red Dirt stomping grounds is you only get one shot a year at a band like Shane Smith if you’re lucky. Two years ago they played in Louisville to hardly anyone because the venue had stupid show your vax card policies ( but took all your Save Our Stages tax money) and they lost their ass. I spent over $100 at the merch booth. They’ve got one Kentucky show this run in Lexington but I have to work until 7, live over an hour away and will have to miss it.

Bg SS&TS guy here – I feel like I’m turning into a major league complainer, but I just don’t like it when the last track of the album gets released as a single – especially here where “Fire in the Ocean” (which I like plenty) will have been out for 16 months before the record hits shelves. It doesn’t quite “spoil” the album, but it does seem to do something similar. Is this becoming a more common practice? Or am I just going a little crazy?

I’m sure there’s some reason why, but the incredibly long release period for this album seems like a bad choice.

They had momentum after Yellowstone

Seems like for most bands the long release window is a thing of the past.

I say tbhiwas someone who will listen multiple times day 1 and just wants the album now. Great great band.

Perplexing release schedule though.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I feel your pain, and Trig has chatted about this before somewhere……once upon a time long ago rules were basic rules in the music industry. An artist would lead with one track (usually a single of some sort) a few weeks before the album would be released and when the album came out, many of us would buy it, not really having been listening to the one song that much in advance etc…

Now there are no rules, and every artist does whatever the fuck they want, releasing one, two, or sometimes 4or 5 tracks (currently being touted as the “sampler” by some artists) in the year leading up the album seeing the light of day thus making many of us either sick of those tracks because we’ve been playing them OR not playing those more than a few times, so you’re still excited come release day. It’s ruined more than one album for me I’m not going to lie but I’ve been pretty good at just waiting if I know the release date is close. It’s aggravating though for sure, especially for those of us that still care about the album format.

I guess it’s just the streaming world chipping away at the album form. I’ve found myself enjoying the “sampler” deal, especially with long album’s like Charles Wesley Godwin’s, but I still want the album to be its own thing. But yeah, ignoring new songs from favorite artists just so you can listen to 7 rather than 6 new tracks on the actual release day is a skill I’ve glumly picked up.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’m looking forward to this one. They are a really exceptional band. I really don’t know why they are not bigger.

Shane Smith and the Saints Survived Fires, the IRS, and Actual Snakebites to Become Red Dirt Heroes

By Josh Crutchmer

Josh Crutchmer

By any measure, Shane Smith and the Saints are in the midst of the sort of career-altering breakthrough that launches Texas bar bands into amphitheaters, music halls, and the top lines of festival posters.

Start with the tour. This spring, the Saints will play the Grand Ole Opry, headline Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the second time in a year — with 49 Winchester and Hayes Carll on the bill — and spend a week touring Europe with Tanner Usrey opening.

The bigger crowds and next-level music come on the heels of a series of musical appearances in Yellowstone — starting in late 2021 in an episode titled “All I See Is You” after the Saints’ song of the same name — and a prime slot opening for Whiskey Myers on that band’s 2022 Tornillo tour.

“It’s all very exciting,” Smith tells Rolling Stone . “But I honestly feel more pressure right now than I ever did. We have all these opportunities that the vast majority of people never get. We have to show up. We’ve got to deliver on this new record. It’s our first studio album in five years, and that’s insane to say, because all this stuff that is happening for us has happened without new music.”

Whether real or simply in Smith’s head, the pressure is well-founded.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

But a series of increasingly concerning brushes with perils as varied as the IRS, venomous snakes, and even death brought the Saints to what could have — and possibly should have — been the end of the road.

“We were doing our thing, building up an organic fan base around the country. Unlike a lot of our peers in Texas, we would actually get out of the state and try to tour the country,” Smith says. “We’ve played almost every state except for Hawaii and one or two others. We would get out there and really put the work in.”

In 2017, Satterwhite broke his leg in a motorcycle accident. He toured and played for roughly six months in a wheelchair. The Saints traveled in an RV at the time, with a broken step. At every concert, rest stop, or hotel, band or crew would lift Satterwhite in or out of the RV.

Trump says he’d deport ‘anti-american’ protesters in bizarre rally speech, switzerland's nemo wins 2024 eurovision song contest.

Somehow, the Saints still scraped together the money to buy their first tour bus. The quarters were tight, but it still felt like leveling up. That respite lasted “a few months” according to Smith, before the situation once again worsened.

On Nov. 21, 2019, en route to a show in Lubbock, the bus caught fire. That every band and crew member survived is astonishing, because little else did.

“It happened while we were going down the road,” Smith says. “We had an engine fire, and it burned up the entire bus. We were outside of this little bitty town. The keys to the trailer were in the bus that was on fire, and we couldn’t get back in to get them. We couldn’t break the locks off to get our gear out. We had to sit there and watch it all burn up.”

By pre-pandemic 2020, the idea of selling all the band’s remaining merchandise and moving on had gained enough momentum for Smith to seriously consider it. In the wake of the fire, Koe Wetzel — who at the time had suddenly gone from club headliner to arena headliner — had an extra bus he let the Saints use. They rode it to Denver’s Mission Ballroom, where Smith found a crowd and a friend. He broke down.

“We sold like 900 tickets on a very bad-weather night,” Smith says. “There was snow everywhere. I had a buddy — Danny Sax, who works for AEG and promotion for Red Rocks — come up to the bus and asked how I was doing. I said, ‘Not good.’

“Rather than just lying, I finally just kind of broke down and said, ‘I’m about to quit music. There’s no way I can keep doing this,’” Smith continues. “And he let me talk through it.”

“That year, Charley Crockett canceled, and we got onto the lineup at the last minute,” Smith says. “That was our first break. We had managed — by chance, by fate, by luck — to get on that lineup. Mile 0 went incredible, and they raised nearly $10,000 for us.”

On the road to Florida, Schwartz called and said he wanted to meet the band. After catching a show at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta, he came aboard to manage them.

The Saints’ luck had turned. Despite the live-music stoppage during the pandemic, the band continued to make music and recorded Live from the Desert — a live album without an audience — at several spots around Terlingua, Texas, and released it in 2021. Shortly after, they got the Yellowstone call and the Whiskey Myers tour slot.

Norther puts a cap on that journey.

“I’m very slow with my writing. I’m not some fast-paced guy. I’d be terrible as a Nashville writer or someone who is meant to turn out songs quickly,” Smith says. “I just had a catalog of about 20 songs that were half-finished when it became clear that it was crunch time and we needed to get an album out, like, last year.”

They booked time at Modern Electric Studio in Dallas and signed on with Beau Bedford, Paul Cauthen’s producer. They recorded in one-and-two-day stretches before flying back to shows. The only part of the process that never felt disjointed was the music itself. The track “Navajo Norther” lends the record its title. Unlike the other 12 songs, it came quickly to Smith. Its refrain — “Were you the earthquake that set us free?” — is hauntingly appropriate.

“I put pen to paper, and I drew a blank when I was trying to come up with lyrics,” Smith says. “Then, I just started writing about a storm. And it just went, and it never stopped.”

“For so long, we were such a DIY band,” Brown tells Rolling Stone . “That’s great when you’re in your 20s and single with no kids. But now that we’re in our 30s, it’s been nice to actually get a paycheck, fly in and out to see our kids. I’ve got two daughters and my wife. It’s been a huge blessing, having the flexibility that comes with newfound success.”

Having played alongside Smith from the start, Brown still sees the same drive in Smith that he saw when they started out in Austin.

“In a really good way, he’s the same guy that he was on Sixth Street,” Brown says. “That’s why we’re still buddies, because we haven’t changed our mentality.”

In January, Shane Smith and the Saints were once again at the Mile 0 festival. This time, there was no luck involved. They were headliners, set to play immediately after Silverada (formerly known as Mike and the Moonpies) made their debut under the new name and had the Friday-night crowd in a frenzy.

In a tent behind the Coffee Butler Amphitheater, Smith gathered his band for a pre-show prayer, followed by a “Saints on three! One! Two! Three!” huddle break.

Smith and Brown practiced Jimmy Buffett’s “A Pirate Looks at Forty” while waiting for their cue. It was the band’s first Key West show since Buffett’s death and Smith wanted to cover the tune. When Schaefer told the band he was going to sit out the song because he didn’t learn it, Brown cannot help himself: “Bro, you were on a boat in Key West all day, and you didn’t listen to Jimmy Buffett?” Then the band raised a toast and took the stage.

Smith and Brown nailed the “Pirate” cover. The Saints swayed and rocked out for 90 minutes, closing with a three-song encore and their original Yellowstone contribution, “All I See Is You.” The crowd ate it up and called for more.

That scene is becoming the norm now, for a band that, despite snakebites and audits, is somehow still standing.

Later the same year the band composed the theme song (Frozen Angel) for a major Finnish feature film, "V2 – Dead Angel" produced by Solarfilms Inc. The band is also featured in the film. In February 2007 NORTHER released a new EP, 'No Way Back', which only came out in Finland and later in Japan. The record immediately hit position number 1 in the Finnish charts.

Later that year the band had great club gigs and festival appearances across Europe (Wacken, Masters of Rock, etc.) while writing new material for their forthcoming album. Early August the guys entered the Astia Studios to record the new album with Anssi Kippo. After a two month session the band played sold out shows in Finland, re-visited Studio Fredman to mix the album and then hit the road again with Amoral & Drone for a European tour.

Finally to crown their achievements, NORTHER signed a new deal with Marquee Avalon and with Century Media Records! So now everything is ready to rock the boat worldwide with their newest release entitled "N" hitting the stores early 2008! NORTHER's most mature and diverse effort to date. NORTHER is reborn!

Due to the small venue, this felt like an intimate show. There was a dance floor at the front of the stage, so anyone could get 'close up'.

The band was great. They played all the songs that old fans would know. They threw in some snippets of songs from other bands.

A few stories were related to the audience and a great time was had by all.

I would recommend going out to see these guys. You may know more songs than you think.

ABOUT FALLING IN REVERSE +  POPULAR MONSTER: FALLING IN REVERSE return with 2024’s  Popular Monster , the postmodern trailblazer’s first full-length in seven years. The album arrives armed with no less than three RIAA-certified gold singles (“ZOMBIFIED,” “Voices in My Head,” “Watch the World Burn”), the double-platinum title track, a reimagined nü-metal classic, and six brand new anthems of furious metal, melody, and hip-hop.

Popular Monster  is a defiant statement and triumphant victory for singer, songwriter, bandleader, and provocateur Ronnie Radke, who invented Falling In Reverse inside a prison cell.

Radke fills the fifth full-length from Falling In Reverse with invincible and irresistible songs that resonate across generations and genres. Co-produced with longtime collaborator Tyler Smyth (I Prevail, Lights),  Popular Monster  is full of confessional angst, bravado, and clever wordplay.

Ronnie formed a series of pop-punk bands in Las Vegas as a teenager, culminating in the creation of Escape The Fate. The metalcore group’s meteoric rise coincided with the singer’s spiral into addiction. By the time he was sentenced to two years in prison, the band he started had moved on without him. Some fans, critics, and industry types figured his story would end there.

They were very wrong.

The gold-certified debut album from Falling In Reverse,  The Drug In Me Is You  (2011), arrived less than two years after Ronnie’s release. Thanks to his formative fascinations with metal, punk, and hip-hop, he almost single-handedly revived rap rock with the ambitious  Fashionably Late  (2013).  Just Like You  (2015), debuted in the Top 5 on the US Rock chart. The grungy and atmospheric  Coming Home  (2017) demonstrated yet another adventurous side of Radke’s self-expression.

“Losing My Mind” and “Losing My Life” surprised the so-called “scene” all over again in 2018 when he became the first of his peers to swerve from the album format to standalone singles. “Drugs” explored the American substance abuse epidemic and channeled Ronnie’s own heartbreak.

The massive “Popular Monster” became Ronnie’s first No. 1 song on the radio and his first platinum single less than two years after its release. It was also the first No. 1 song on  Billboard’ s inaugural Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, which considers airplay, streaming, and downloads. “Popular Monster” eventually went double-platinum in the US and 3x platinum in Australia. “ZOMBIFIED” and “Voices In My Head” went to No. 1 back-to-back. “Voices In My Head” was also the No. 1 Song of 2022 at SiriusXM’s Octane. The unconventional, caustic, and super heavy “Watch the World Burn” dominated rock radio in 2023 and improbably became his first  Billboard   Hot 100  song.

As with the top-notch producers and directors Ronnie has hired to help execute his vision, he’d regularly surrounded himself with incredible live players, resulting in unforgettable performances with various lineups over the years. Radke owns the stage, whether taking the Warped Tour mantle held by My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold, and Fall Out Boy in the tour’s final years, performing in prominent spots on every major rock festival, or on massive headlining treks.

Popular Monster , the album, marks another chapter in the ongoing story of an artist who continually beats the odds, surmounting obstacles (and adversaries) both within and without.

“Radke stands as one of this generation’s most revered rock frontmen,” wrote the esteemed  Forbes Magazine  in a 2020 profile. “And maybe even one of the scene’s last true rockstars.”

Maps show where millions in U.S. could see northern lights this weekend

A mericans as far south as Alabama and Northern California were being treated to a show of the northern lights this weekend from a powerful geomagnetic storm which reached Earth, officials said. If the weather conditions are right, people in wider areas on the map could look up and see the aurora borealis .

The storm prompted government forecasters to warn of potential disruptions to communications systems, the power grid and satellite operations, but it also put on a fantastic light display in the night sky Friday.

"The aurora is when we get energized particles that have left the sun in more quantities than usual, and they interact with Earth's magnetic barrier," Shawn Dahl, senior space weather forecaster for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, explained to CBS News.

The geomagnetic storm reached Earth Friday evening as an "extreme" G5 , according to the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. Geomagnetic storms are ranked from G1 to G5.

"This one is pretty large, It think it's pretty extreme, we got to the G5, which is the highest in terms of strength," said Dr. Nour Rawafi, an astrophysicist with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

It marks the first G5 geomagnetic storm to reach Earth since October 2003. A G5 is so large it can disrupt satellites we rely on for communications and GPS. Elon Musk's Starlink satellites were reporting "degraded service."

Dahl explains a G5 storm can potentially disrupt the GPS we use on our phones.

"It could, because most of our phones are single-frequency GPS systems," Dahl said.

Experts say the aurora borealis will likely be viewable again Saturday night, with the best chance to see the northern lights between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday.

"If you happen to be in an area where it's dark and cloud free and relatively unpolluted by light, you may get to see a fairly impressive aurora display, and that's really the gift from space weather, is the aurora," Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, told reporters Friday morning.

Northern lights map for Friday night

A map from the center showed the aurora would be visible for much of the northern half of the U.S. Friday night. A red line on the map shows how far south the aurora forecast went.

The National Weather Service's St. Louis office said people in the area should leave the city for the best possible chance to view the northern lights.

"Get away from city lights into a dark, rural surrounding and look north," the office said on social media . "Aside from some clouds associated with a passing front, much of the time looks mostly clear."

The prediction center notes on its website that people don't need to be directly underneath the aurora to see it. Instead, it can be observed from as much as 620 miles away.

The weather service's office for the San Francisco Bay Area had been less optimistic when asked if there was a chance for a nighttime show there.

"Probably not, but I'll still look up while walking my dog," the office said . But the weather service turned out to be wrong, the northern lights were visible from the Bay Area.

Northern lights map for Saturday night

Friday night wasn't the only opportunity for a northern lights show. The storm was expected to last through the weekend, and the prediction center released a forecast map for Saturday night.

Officials said people in the southern U.S. who can't see the aurora with their naked eyes could still take some dazzling pictures with their phones.

"Cellphones are much better than our eyes at capturing light," the Space Weather Prediction Center's Brent Gordon told reporters Friday. "Just go out your back door and take a picture with a newer cellphone, and you'd be amazed at what you see in that picture versus what you see with your eyes."

Stunning photos showed the vivid display of the northern lights over Europe and the U.K. after nightfall there on Friday.

Stavropol Krai contains a large number of Caucasian health spas/sanatoria, which Russians have visited for over 200 years to treat various ailments (and just to escape the northern climate of Moscow and Saint Petersburg . As such, the region has been home to many of Russia's most prominent figures, including writers such as A.S. Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov, whose works have embedded the Pyatigorsk region into the national consciousness. A great read for anyone visiting the region is Lermontov's short novel, A Hero of Our Time , which is set in various areas in the south of the Krai.

Stavropol Krai is also notable for its exceptionally diverse climactic and topographic diversity. The environments range from sand deserts, to mud flats, to steppe, to forest, to mountains, to permafrost!

Because of its proximity to the conflict in Chechnya , the security situation is very poor in Stavropol Krai. While kidnappings are unlikely, there have been fairly regular bombings of public areas and official facilities in the southern cities and in Stavropol over the years. While a visitor is fairly unlikely to be victim to such terroristic attacks, the resulting crackdown has led to strict and unfortunately corrupt policing of the area — a visitor is quite likely to be harassed for bribes.

Stavropol Krai is the nearest “island of freedom” (in every sense) for residents of neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia, who often visit this region for entertainment purposes (alcohol, nightclubs), therefore, it is not uncommon to run into them in entertainment establishments and at night on the streets. They are often armed with knives and pistols. To prevent conflicts, it is better to refrain from reacting to possible provocations on their part and simply walk away from them.

In Stavropol krai there are three GSM operators (MTS, Beeline, Megafon), one 3G-UMTS operator (Beeline) and one CDMA operator on 800 MHz frequency (RusSDO) and they often have offers that give you a SIM card for free or at least very cheap. If you are planning to stay a while and to keep in touch with Stavropolean and other North-Caucasus, South-Russians people, then you should consider buying a local SIM card instead of going on roaming. If you buy a SIM card from a shop you'll need your passport for identification. It only takes five minutes to do the paperwork and it will cost less than $10.

From opening for Taylor Swift to topping the Billboard charts, NEEDTOBREATHE now brings success, tour to Northern Quest

Longevity is a skill that few can master, especially in a business as cutthroat as the music industry. For alternative/southern rock band NEEDTOBREATHE though, it has simply been a way of life.

The band was first formed in Seneca, South Carolina, in 1998 with their first album “The Feature” being released independently in 2001. They signed with Atlantic Records in 2005 and would quickly become known for their rootsy but modern feel, strong and gravely vocals by lead singer Bear Rineheart, and Christian themes that would also win them a Dove Award early on.

The band would spend the late 2000s and early 2010s continuing to establish themselves and tour heavily. In 2011, keyboardist, harmonica player, and backing vocalist Josh Lovelace would become a touring member of the group.

Lovelace had spent years on the road touring with other bands. He got the call from NEEDTOBREATHE and never looked back.

“It became clear to me and to them that I was going to be around for a little while and they generously opened the door to let me be a part of the band as a full member,” Lovelace said. “It’s crazy to think I’ve been doing it that long.”

His first tour with NEEDTOBREATHE was when they were opening for Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now” tour, in which the band and Lovelace were playing their biggest venues yet.

“We were playing these massive arenas and the only reason we were even on that tour is because she was a big fan of our band and asked us to do it,” Lovelace said. “It didn’t make a lot of sense for her to bring us out on the road other than the fact that she wanted to.”

The tour with music gargantuan Swift was only the beginning of an enormous decade for NEEDTOBREATHE. They released three albums over the 2010s, each performing greater than the last. “The Reckoning” went to No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2011, 2014’s “Rivers in the Wasteland” would debut at No. 3 while also going No.1 on the Christian and Rock charts as well. “Hard Love” was released in 2016 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 as well as No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart with 50,000 units sold.

Now, in the 2020s, the band is continuing to see success with their most recent album “Caves” and the subsequent “Caves World Tour,” the very same that will bring them to the Northern Quest Resort and Casino on Sunday.

To Lovelace, the process of creating an album hasn’t changed very much over the course of NEEDTOBREATHE’s rise and decades as a band despite all of the changes seen throughout his time with the group – from lineup swaps to bigger tours to the industry differences all longtime artists have seen post-COVID.

“I feel like we’ve always been a very transparent band,” Lovelace said. “If we’re going through something in our own lives, it is probably going to find its way into a NEEDTOBREATHE song or record. We don’t really know how to not wear our heart on our sleeve.”

Perhaps one shift that has come in the past few years is the understanding that playing larger venues – from arenas to amphitheaters – does create a potential need for a “bigger sound.” The band has spent years putting down layers upon layers on their records (such as some songs having “nine guitar parts”) and “Caves” continues with a more grandiose sound than their humble beginnings, but in a different fashion than usual.

“This record is more intentional,” Lovelace said. “There are layers on there for sure, but there isn’t much we can’t actually replicate live.”

Another change Lovelace can’t help but notice is how far the band has come and where music has taken them – especially as somebody whose career began by driving himself to shows and maybe making $50 in a night. And not to mention the crowds of fans that come to each show wanting to take the time to watch them perform, something that remains not only difficult for Lovelace to understand, but humbling as well.

“To get to see so many people that actually care that you’re playing music and respond to it is so unique and it’s the biggest honor that people actually still care,” Lovelace said. “We could be a rock band in a garage and nobody would care and we’d still enjoy it, but the fact that we get to do what we do in front of people and they enjoy it, that is still unbelievable to us after all this time.”

At the end of the day, Lovelace and NEEDTOBREATHE aren’t here to win countless accolades or sell out arena after arena.

“If we’re not doing something that matters to people and writing songs that people can live their lives to, then I think we’re missing the point,” Lovelace said.

Neil Young reunites with Crazy Horse after a decade, performs double encore

norther band tour

On Thursday night, magic happened in Tennesseee.

Singer-songwriter Neil Young and rock band Crazy Horse came together to perform their hits over a two-hour show at FirstBank Amphitheater on their first tour together in a decade.

The 2024 "Love Earth Tour" features the now 78-year-old singer alongside the Los Angeles rock band yet again.

Canadian singer-songwriter Young, best known for songs "Heart of Gold," "Harvest Moon" and "Old Man," released the album "Fu##in' Up" with Crazy Horse on April 25, featuring nine rock 'n' roll tracks. The two have released 15 studio albums together.

Young and Crazy Horse kicked off their brief 16-stop tour on April 24 in San Diego and will continue with upcoming stops in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and more.

Thursday's concert in Franklin was originally slated for Wednesday evening, but was postponed by a day due to  inclement weather .

But Thursday night brought the calm after the storm; the evening was serene.

Neil Young returns to Spotify after 2-year hiatus following Joe Rogan controversy

After opener Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping , a musical performance art experience that draws from religion, Young hit the stage.

The set-up featured a backdrop with a galloping horse and giant speaker cabinets and road cases, the same ones Young took on the road with him for his "Rust Never Sleeps" tour in 1978.

Young appeared in a striped cap, a denim work shirt that featured paint splatters and a Spartan Truck Equipment patch, black pants, black shoes and of course, his guitar, Old Black .

He mentioned the venue's beauty multiple times — a stage nestled in the woods of Graystone Quarry in Thompson’s Station.

"How you doin out there? Nice to see you," Young said to the Franklin crowd.

"What a beautiful place. You guys are very lucky to have this place."

Alongside Young was the band, comprised of 80-year-old Billy Talbot on bass and 80-year-old Ralph Molina on drums. They also have a new member, Micah Nelson on guitar.

Nelson, Willie Nelson 's 33-year-old son, took over for the band's previous guitarist Nils Lofgren earlier this year.

Throughout the show, Neil Young and the band played a 17-song set, full with jam sessions and occasional harmonies. Young was energized and playful, captivating the crowd with his trademark nasally, emotional voice.

The set list was mostly comprised of older hits, like 1969's "Cinnamon Girl" and 1972's "Heart of Gold."

The band didn't play any songs from their recent album; the most recent song was 1996's "Scattered (Let's Think About Livin')." Nelson's big moment came during the tune; he traded his guitar to play a swinging keyboard that descended from the ceiling.

Young's guitar playing—both electric and acoustic—was adept and agile. Though Young shared in January he has been playing guitar with arthritis in his hand for years, audience members wouldn't have guessed.

He played the blues on song "Vampire Blues," hitting guitar licks with a precision like Stevie Ray Vaughan's. He also performed drawn-out, warping guitar solos on songs like "Like a Hurricane" and "Powderfinger."

Between songs, Young would hand his guitar off to his techs (who all wore white lab coats), but was audibly uncomfortable until he had a guitar in his arms yet again.

The night's concert walked the line between a Young that leaned into classic, grunge rock 'n' roll with Crazy Horse and a Young that gently cooed with Crosby, Stills & Nash in '69, strumming an acoustic.

Young pulled off the balancing act.

Here are some of the top moments from the night.

Neil Young opens with 'Cortez the Killer,' sings newly released verse

On a purple-lit stage, Neil Young and Crazy Horse kicked off the show with the 1975 song "Cortez the Killer."

The first lyrics from Young brought cheers from the audience as he sang, "He came dancing across the water / With his galleons and guns."

Young surprised fans at the first concert of the tour by singing unreleased lyrics to the song, ones he said did not record due to a power outage on the recording console in 1975.

Young found the lyric manuscript, he said in an interview mid-April this year.

The verse was lost for nearly 50 years. Young sang the verse again in Franklin.

“I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter/ I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

Neil Young calls on local non-profits to support his eco-friendly mission

Neil Young has been vocal about his environmental efforts throughout his career .

In 1985, Young helped establish the annual Farm Aid concerts . In 2022, he released album "World Record," an album that focuses on climate change. Later that year, Young said he refused to play venues that are supported by factory farms .

The environmentalism was felt at his Franklin show.

Upon entering the concert, fans saw a series of tents and tables from local environmental organizations all hand picked by Young, including Tennessee Local Food . The organizations attended the concert and chatted with fans about their missions.

Young calls it the "LOVE EARTH Village."

At different stops on the tour, hundreds of non-profits working for sustainability and social equity will join to chat about issues like organic farming, wildlife protection, Native American rights and climate change solutions.

According to a venue employee, Young also changed the menu for the venue's offerings on Thursday, opting for more eco-friendly options (Coke products were nowhere to be seen).

On a handout at the venue, Young wrote, "Support your friends, support your land, and support the people that want to care for the land.

"The revolution starts with us. The revolution starts with you."

Neil Young goes acoustic mid-show, takes stage alone

At one point, Young took an empty stage, traded Old Black for an acoustic, and donned the harmonica around his neck.

He sang songs, "Comes a Time," "Heart of Gold" and "Human Highway" onstage alone, leaning into his folk singer-songwriter roots.

Despite the occasional hoot or holler in the audience, a hush crept over the amphitheater as Young sang, played plucky guitar and showcased his harmonica skills between verses.

It was a gentler, softer and more intimate side to the evening.

"Heart of Gold" stood out among the acoustic section.

Young sang his biggest hit: "Keep me searching / For a heart of gold / I've been a miner / For a heart of gold."

An encore and...another encore

Before the encore, Young ended his set with song "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," leaving the audience with the classic and singing, "Hey hey, my my / Rock and roll can never die."

And it didn't die just then, Young and the band returned to the stage to play "Roll Another Number (For the Road)" as their encore.

After the song finished, the audience didn't stop cheering. Young and company came back to deliver a second encore, this time three songs long.

For encore two, they performed "Danger Bird," "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Sedan Delivery," ending the night on a grungy rock 'n' roll note that included pink lights and plenty of reverb.

Afterwards, the band and Young gathered arm-in-arm in a single spotlight and gave their final bow.

Dark Star Orchestra finalized its summer plans with the revelation of the band’s full tour schedule. Set to kick off on June 28th in Waite Park, MN, the Grateful Dead tribute act will perform from coast to coast through August.

Following the band’s annual  Dark Star Jubilee in Thornville, OH over Memorial Day Weekend, DSO will head West for a run of previously announced shows in Colorado and California before heading out to the East Coast for a set at  Great South Bay Music Festival (7/20) and a show at Stone Pony Summer Stage  in Asbury Park, NJ (7/21). Dark Star Orchestra revealed that for the Stone Pony show, the band will recreate Grateful Dead’s September 3rd, 1977 concert from Englishtown, NJ.

“Englishtown was the biggest Grateful Dead show ever held in New Jersey with an estimated 150,000 in attendance,” DSO bassist  Skip Vangelas said. “Its proximity, only 25 miles from Asbury Park, and the fact that it was an epic outdoor show, made sense for us to choose. It’s a classic show in the GD world and one that New Jerseyans, whether Deadhead or not have never forgotten!”

The band has added a new two-night run at Wonderland Forest in LaFayette, NY (8/9–8/10) along with gigs at New York City’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 (8/11) and Power Ridge in Middlefield, CT (8/16). Dark Star Orchestra will perform its eighth concert at Innovative Field , home of the  Rochester Red Wings minor league baseball team, in Rochester, NY (8/21) ahead of shows at  Thompson’s Point in Portland, ME (8/23), and  Stateside Amphitheater at Jay Peak Resort in Jay, VT (8/24) before wrapping the tour with a two-night run at Tree House Brewing Company in Deerfield, MA (8/26–8/27).

Tickets for the newly announced Dark Star Orchestra 2024 summer tour dates are on sale now via the band’s website . See below for a full list of newly announced concerts. Dark Star Orchestra will kick off the summer on May 26th, 27th, and 28th at  Legend Valley in Ohio for Dark Star Jubilee with three nights of DSO in addition to sets by Greensky Bluegrass , Melvin Seals & JGB , Daniel Donato , Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass , Jennifer Hartswick ,  Doom Flamingo , and many more.

CBS SF talks to Slayer guitarist Kerry King about his new band's debut album, upcoming tour

By Eddie Jorgensen

May 9, 2024 / 7:21 AM PDT / CBS San Francisco

For the uninitiated, Slayer's co-founding guitarist Kerry King has been at the forefront of thrash metal for almost four decades. With a style that encapsulates the finer moments of thrash, punk and metal, King's songs have been the soundtrack to many head-banging youths with such song staples as "Mandatory Suicide," "Hell Awaits," and "Raining Blood."

As the debut his new band's latest single "Idle Hands" proved, longtime Slayer fans didn't have to worry if the guitarist softened since Slayer's farewell tour back in November 2019. Said Kerry -- who ceremoniously left his trademark chains behind as he walked offstage at the last Slayer gig -- "I knew early on that I wasn't done, and I had no intention of not continuing to play."

With principle tracks recorded at Henson Studios in Los Angeles over the course of only two weeks, From Hell I Rise  was finished shortly thereafter. Featuring 13 blistering tracks including standouts "Crucifixation," "Toxic," "Residue," and the highly infectious "Tension," there isn't a dud to be found. And with song structures and topics that could only come from Slayer's axeman, this soundtrack to the apocalypse -- available on all formats on May 17th Reigning Phoenix Music -- is sure to incite riotous behavior and circle pits wherever the band performs.

Much more than a side project, Kerry King -- both the band and the man -- are on a mission and putting the group at the forefront of all conversations. While Slayer may have announced reunion appearances at a trio of festivals in the fall (including one at Aftershock 2024 in Sacramento ), King and his new band will be on the road as much as humanly possible. Started well before the pandemic, King has been a writing machine and, perhaps, even more prolific than during his full-time Slayer tenure.

And while there is much chatter going on about Slayer returning this year, From Hell I Rise  showcases one helluva line-up and is much more than a distraction from current events. Featuring some of Bay Area's best including longtime Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph (who also once played in Forbidden), guitarist Phil Demmel (formerly with Vio-Lence and Machine Head, who is also a member of the recently unveiled supergroup Category 7 featuring Armored Saint and former Anthrax frontman John Bush), and Death Angel vocalist Mark Osegueda along with bassist Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah), there is more than enough firepower to appease even the most devout Slayer fan.

As luck would have it, the band will be supporting Lamb Of God and Mastodon on a stateside trek dubbed the "Ashes of Leviathan Tour" that sees them crisscrossing the U.S. starting July 19th in Grand Prairie, TX and then ultimately ending in La Vista, Nebraska at the close of August.

CBS SF:  Just finally listened to the new album as a whole and it's a great listen from top to bottom. How long have these songs been ruminating? Were any of these riffs meant for Slayer originally?

Kerry King: There are two complete songs on this album that were left over from 'Repentless' and they were even done lyrically then, but I wasn't thrilled with how they turned out. I put them back in my pocket until the next Slayer record, but there never was a next record, so that became part of my new record.  Some of these riffs, like the main body of 'Residue,' is probably over 20 years old. I could never find the parts to finish it. This time I was able to. It's one of those songs that I always knew I wanted to use, but didn't want to put it out prematurely. There's tons of stuff I wrote since Slayer was done. There's also tons of stuff I wrote since 'From Hell I Arise' was done, so record number two is shaping up nicely as well.

CBS SF:  Your band features a veritable who's who of the Bay Area metal scene. Why that area in particular?

Kerry King: I didn't think of it like that, but that's just how it panned out. I've known these guys -- especially, everybody from the Bay Area -- for decades.  All of them except Mark [Osegueda] needed work. Certainly Paul and I were out of work. Phil Demmel was also out of work, but he put his name in the hat very early and worked with us doing demos off and on. Every five or six weeks, he'd come down to play and we'd sound better.

Using the demos we had, Phil would send new ideas whenever had new material. Phil's an incredible player and Mark's one of the best singers in thrash metal, without question. The pulse of thrash definitely comes from there. We were a little displaced because we were in Southern California, but at the end of the day, so was Metallica.

I met Kyle in 2015 on the Mayhem Tour and we became friends very quickly. I knew that if I ever wanted a bassist, that's who I'd be calling. He's my East Coast connection. Paul's been working with me on and off since the early 90's, so the talent and the friendship is there. I'm happy I could help the guys out when they didn't have work. Right now, I get to go forward and show everybody what we got.

CBS SF: A full U.S. tour is already on the books. Do you plan to stay as busy with the KKB in 2025?

Kerry King: Absolutely. I would like to get something filled up between October and December 2024, but if the promoters think that's too early, then it will be soon after the New Year as business picks up again. Five weeks in Europe is very short for any kind of tour, be it festivals, or whatever. We want to go back and do a proper headline tour over there. We'll probably come to the States and do a proper headline tour or shift gears and put our other record out. We will be busy for sure.

CBS SF:  Do you prefer festivals over headlining dates?

Kerry King: That's difficult. I like both. If I had my choice, I would probably say a headlining date.  When you're doing festivals, you're just a pawn in a sea of bands that are there to entertain a mass of people, so there's too many cooks in the kitchen, so to speak.

CBS SF:  Any songs that didn't make the record?

Kerry King: Absolutely.  Within three months of Paul and I getting together, we had so many songs.  I said, "Hey dude, let's shift gears and finish the ones I've already got lyrics or titles for, or just songs making this record, so we aren't spinning our wheels and getting burned out." Before we called those songs, we made demos of them however far along they were at that point, and those are ones I'm going to readdress when I start working on stuff again. Actually, when I finally go on tour, during days off I'm going to really try to finish lyrics and stuff. When I come home and when the tour cycle is over, we can go right back in the studio and get more music out.

CBS SF:  Why no Bay Area show scheduled so far? Seems like your biggest market aside from Los Angeles and New York.

Kerry King: I'll bet that Lamb of God has played the Bay Area recently. There's no New York City show either, so I'm assuming Lamb of God had shows there awhile ago as well. We're playing the sheds in some B & C markets, but when we come back we'll be hitting the other places.

CBS SF:  What are your earliest memories of touring alongside Mark Osegueda previous to joining the band? What about Phil Demmel?

Kerry King: My earliest memories are all gone, because that was probably 40 years ago. I've known Mark since he was a teenager singing in Death Angel. I remember them opening for us because Mark always reminds me he did when he was not even 18 years old and still a kid. Beyond that, Death Angel did an opening run for us in around 2016 or 2017. Before that, it was basically different circles.

As far as Phil goes, I knew Phil in Vio-Lence, but really I don't remember that period either. We'd already toured with Machine Head lots and unless we were playing the same festivals and we turned up at the same place, I would never see him. However, every time if I was off and he came through or he was off and I came through, we'd hang to talk music and stuff.

CBS SF:  Have you worked with anyone else outside of your band that has music recorded for possible release someday?

Kerry King: No. This isn't a solo project. Kerry King [the band] happens to have my name on it. This is my band and will be until we decide no longer to be one. Hopefully, that's when we're all done and want to hang it up to go sit on our porch and watch a bucket of grass grow. These are my guys now, so get used to them.
