Ex-Giant Victor Cruz tells story of infamous boat picture

victor cruz giants

Victor Cruz and a few Giants receivers took a little trip down to Miami back in January 2017 prior to the postseason.

We’re all aware of the infamous Giants boat picture.

It’s the one that includes Victor Cruz , Odell Beckham Jr., and Sterling Shepard; the one that was taken in January 2017 right before the Giants put up a stinker against the Packers in the Wild Card playoff round; the one that proceeded the Giants’ three-win 2017 season, five-win 2018 season, four-win 2019 season, and six-win 2020 season.

The New York Giants are (18-48) since “the boat” was photographed in January, 2017. That’s an NFL worst in W/L. pic.twitter.com/P1tavzrONB — Jack Perdek (@Jperdekosu) September 17, 2021

It’s a picture some fans never had a problem with, but others would like to forget.

And on Friday, over four years since the photo was taken, Cruz told the story of the trip to Miami while on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.

"So, we're like let's go to Miami!" And the rest is history… @TeamVic tells the story of the infamous Giants boat picture. pic.twitter.com/EklmiLADXn — Good Morning Football (@gmfb) September 24, 2021

Ex-Giants WR Odell Beckham finally explains career-derailing boat trip

Ravens wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is reflecting on his time with the Giants .

In particular, he’s looking back at the infamous boat trip, which many point to as the reason New York lost 38-13 to the Packers in Beckham’s only playoff appearance with the team in 2017. The three-time Pro Bowler caught just four passes for 28 yards in the game, and depending on how tough you wanted to grade “drops,” had anywhere from one to three of those.

People narrowed their focus on Beckham and his teammates, including Victor Cruz Jr. and Sterling Shepard, decision to go to Miami to celebrate the New Year instead of staying home to prepare for their game against Green Bay. This, Beckham deeply regrets.

“When the picture came out, the energy — I’m a huge energy person … everybody around me, even in my own self, I felt like we had lost,” Beckham said on the “Punch Line” podcast , hosted by Ravens teammate Marlon Humphrey.

“I had the best week in practice, I didn’t let it bother me, tried to dance it off … but deep down inside something had felt wrong. The attention had been shifted from the New York Giants versus the Green Bay Packers to this boat story.

“My biggest regret about all of that is that incident allowed that to happen. Not that I went and had a good time on New Year’s. It’s that I put myself in a situation where this story could be used to create a distraction from what’s really going on.”

The Giants drafted Beckham in the first round (12th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. In five seasons in New York where he played just 59 games, he established himself as one of the best receivers in the team’s history. He ranks second in franchise history in receiving yards (5,476), trailing only Amani Toomer (9,497). He places fourth in touchdown receptions (44), trailing Kyle Rote (48), Joe Morrison (47) and Toomer (54), all of whom played in 121 games or more with the team.

In 2019, the Giants traded Beckham to the Browns for a first-round pick, a third-round pick and safety Jabrill Peppers, who is an East Orange native. More than two years later, in 2021, Cleveland waived the wide receiver after his relationship with the organization and quarterback Baker Mayfield soured. This allowed him to sign with the Rams , where he played a crucial role in helping the team win a Super Bowl.

After missing the 2022 season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered in the Super Bowl with Los Angeles, Beckham signed with the Ravens , who are a Super Bowl contender in the playoffs.

Victor cruz gave a full breakdown of the infamous giants miami boat trip, including why obj was wearing timberlands in the picture.

Marty Mush

This photo was the downfall of the New York Giants. I hate that I even have to write this blog because it just brings back awful memories. Why did they have to take this picture?

I was always wondering why OBJ would be wearing Timbs on a boat in Miami and all along it was because he didn't have shoes. Which leads me to my next question. Why the fuck does OBJ not have any shoes with him? Could he have bought some instead? It also doesn't explain why they are wearing jeans on the boat and not dressed for the water. This still makes zero sense to me.

Despite this story, Victor Cruz is one of my favorite Giants and I love how he is like "I just wanted to make sure everyone came back in one piece". There is definitely some truth to that because a lot of the guys that went down were young, so he had to head down as a veteran even if he was probably excited to go to Miami.

I would love to really sit these players down though and ask why did they have to go during the season. Why couldn't they just wait a couple of weeks? I get that they are young, rich and probably felt invincible. But going on a trip before a playoff game is nuts.

This picture actually might have ruined the Giants core but hey I am sure they had a very fun time! The Timbs will still never make sense because OBJ should always have shoes. If he did maybe, history would've changed. Or just don't take a photo let alone a vacation to Miami the week of a playoff game. But it is funny to talk about now.

Giants' sterling shepard lone survivor of infamous miami 'boat photo', share this article.

When the New York Giants made the playoffs in 2016, there was a general excitement around the team — a belief they had re-arrived and were poised to make another Super Bowl run.

Giants trade Odell Beckham: Twitter erupts

That proved to be a false hope as the Giants were embarrassed in Green Bay in the wildcard game, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. punched a hole in the Lambeau Field wall and co-owner John Mara was forced to confront some of his demons publicly.

An offer for Giants fans

A season later, head coach Ben McAdoo was fired, general manager Jerry Reese was sent packing and, on Tuesday night, Beckham was traded to the Cleveland Browns.

In less than three years, that team has been wiped out. And to this day, many blame the infamous “Miami boat picture” as the Giants’ sudden demise — a seemingly harmless photograph of Big Blue players, famous artists (see: Trey Songz) — some of whom they partied with earlier in the day — and a luxurious yacht in Miami Beach.

So OBJ, Sterling Shepard, Victor Cruz, and Roger Lewis flew to Miami last night, went clubbing, and are on a boat. Living life. #Giants pic.twitter.com/SE6QqfuYfT — Justin Witmondt (@JustinWitmondt) January 2, 2017

In an accompanying video to the image, which featured Sterling Shepard, Victor Cruz, Roger Lewis Jr. and Beckham, someone can be heard saying, “I can’t take Adderall.”

Unsurprisingly, courtesy of the New York market, the photo caused a massive uproar leading up to the Packers loss. It became a regular topic of conversation in subsequent years and now, with Beckham gone, Cruz having been released and Lewis having been waived, Shepard has taken over as the sole survivor.

FYI….Sterling Shepard is the lone survivor of the famous "boat" photo #Giants #NFL100 — Geoff Magliocchetti (@GeoffMags5490) March 13, 2019

For years many dismissed the photo as little more than a scapegoat, but there’s no denying its consequences. The Giants have gone 8-25 since it was taken and only one man remains.

Shepard’s rookie contract is up after the 2019 season. Will he return?

Giants didn’t lose because of Miami boat trip, but it’s not what anyone else thinks

miami boat trip giants

The New York Giants were in the news for all the wrong reasons this past week. They didn’t really do anything bad or illegal, at least not that we know, but the Giants wide receivers all flew to Miami after clinching a wild card playoff spot and enjoyed their day off shirtless and on a boat.

Like a gift sent down from the heavens, that was all anyone wanted to talk about on sports talk radio, the debate shows and the tabloids this past week. Giants head coach Ben McAdoo didn’t think it was such a big deal given it was their day off. Eli Manning joked his way out of questions about the boat. The receivers themselves poked fun by running around shirtless at Lambeau Field before their playoff game against the Packers this past weekend.

The Packers took notice and destroyed the Giants 38-13, allowing the heavens to send down another gift because now people will talk about how the boat trip caused the Giants to lose.

I get it, it’s low hanging fruit to point out that the Giants were distracted by the boat trip and they weren’t prepared against the Packers. That narrative perfectly fits into the “embrace debate” hot take/tabloid culture we live in. And the tabloids sure had fun with this. But let’s be honest, did that really cause the Giants to lose?

Third big drop for Odell Beckham this game. pic.twitter.com/FpFErQQdY2 — Ethan aka The People’s Insider (@EthanGSN) January 9, 2017

Sure, Odell Beckham Jr. dropping three passes doesn’t help my reasoning but logically think about this for a second. For one thing, it was their day off, which is something most teams do on the day after a game. And, what exactly was the difference between being on a boat in Miami and staying in New York City on Monday? As long as the players aren’t doing anything illegal and they get back in time for practice first thing Tuesday morning, it wasn’t that big of a deal.

And I can all but guarantee that if the receivers stayed in New York on Monday that they wouldn’t be spending their off day studying the Packers. It’s unrealistic to think they would do that and I personally wouldn’t want them to. I’m sure you or I don’t like to do work on our off day so why should they? Yes, these players make way more money and all but you need a break to recharge your mind and body. You can’t expect players to study an opponent every waking minute of every day leading up to the game. I’m sure some wished that was the case but they would be worse off if that happened.

GREEN BAY, WI - JANUARY 8: during the NFC Wild Card game at Lambeau Field on January 8, 2017 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images)

On the other end, while the Miami boat trip didn’t cause the Giants to lose, the players didn’t help themselves by giving off the perception they didn’t care. Seriously, could those players be any more naive that flying to Miami before a playoff game wouldn’t be a big deal? It would be a big deal anywhere they play, but they play in New York City. These players would have to be completely delusional to not think this wouldn’t be talked about on the NYC sports talk radio shows. Yeah, Francesa is just going to ignore that. The man has to fill five and a half hours every day, of course he’s going to talk about it. How could you be so stupid and naive this wouldn’t be blown out of proportion?

And even if you had the itch to head to the warmer temperatures of Miami, because I wish I was there instead of the cold of the northeast, just don’t post it on social media! This is the part where I sound like I’m 30 years older than I really am, but not everything needs to be posted on social media just simply for the hell of it. There’s a chance news of the boat trip would leak out anyway but at least it could have been taken as not such a big deal. Rather than showing off that you’re on a boat and removing all doubt you were in Miami.

Maybe the media should take responsibility for making this Miami boat trip a bigger deal than what it actually was, but it’s not like anyone was shocked the media would do something like this. The media goes nuts for things far less serious than this and whether it’s fair or not, whether they like it or not, the Giants wide receivers should have known better. The boat trip wasn’t what caused the Giants to lose but the perception from many was that it did and that’s what the players and their fans will be hearing from now on.

As it likely is for most Giants fans, the image of Victor Cruz and his then-teammates on a boat in Miami is forever ingrained in the receiver’s memory.

Reflecting on the infamous trip, Cruz recently told E! News  the group was riding high after a regular season-ending win over the Redskins and opted to celebrate before their wild-card matchup with the Packers.

“It was right after a game, and we were just about to go into the playoffs, and although we had the day off, we went to Miami, we had a good time, it was New Year’s Day, we came back the next day, didn’t break any rules,” Cruz said of the 2016-17 season.

“This photo will haunt me for the rest of my life.”

Cruz, who played seven seasons with the Giants before retiring in 2018, said the opportunity to jet to South Florida was too enthralling to pass up .

“It was more so the feeling of, ‘Man, when am I going to get to do this again? When am I going to get to be an athlete, win a football game, go on a private jet, go to Miami the same night?'” Cruz explained of the trip that involved Trey Songz. “It was one of those things where I was just like, ‘I think I’m just going to feed our ego tonight.'”

Cruz was joined by fellow Giants receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, and Roger Lewis. He said once the group shot leaked online, that’s when the situation got “amplified.”

“Well, obviously, we’re back in the locker room, we’re getting ready for practice, and the media asking a ton of questions about it, they asked our coach about it,” Cruz explained.

A week after the trip, the Packers leveled the Giants, 38-13, at Lambeau Field, and Beckham punched a hole in the wall . And while Cruz doesn’t regret the trip, he believes overall feelings about the quickie getaway would have shifted if the Giants won.

“If this was 1999, no one would have known about the trip, we would have went, had a great time, come back,” Cruz said. “And then had we won the game, that’s the part that kind of bothers me, too. If we won the game, they’d be like, ‘Go to Miami every week, apparently that’s the good luck charm.’ The fact that we lost, left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth.”

Former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz says he’s still haunted by the infamous Miami boat picture that was taken just a week before the Giants lost to the Green Bay Packers in a 2016 playoff game.

Cruz reflected on the what-ifs in an interview with E! News  this week where he recalled the public backlash he and former teammates Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard and Roger Lewis faced after they were accused of not taking their upcoming Wild Card game against the Packers seriously enough.

“If this was 1999, no one would have known about the trip, we would have went, had a great time, come back,” he said. “And then had we won the game, that’s the part that kind of bothers me, too. If we won the game, they’d be like, ‘Go to Miami every week, apparently that’s the good luck charm.’ The fact that we lost, left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth.”

Despite losing 38-13, Cruz said he doesn’t regret the decision to go.

“It was right after a game, and we were just about to go into the playoffs, and although we had the day off, we went to Miami, we had a good time, it was New Year’s Day, we came back the next day, didn’t break any rules,” he said.

The one-time Pro Bowler was drafted by the Giants in 2010. He was released shortly after the teams' failed playoff stint and, despite winning a Super Bowl in 2012, his trip to Miami might be what he’s remembered by most.

8 takeaways from the Giants' ridiculous boat photo

VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE (January 4, 2017): It has come to my attention — and by that I mean everyone I know has contacted me to bring this to my attention because they can’t believe I didn’t notice it — that there is an eighth takeaway in this photo. One I am embarrassed to have missed. And that eighth takeaway is what appears to be a joint in Trey Songz’s hand.

miami boat trip giants

I love it. I’m here for Trey Songz’s supposed joint. As a boat expert, I highly recommend smoking weed on boats. In the words of Jeff Spiccoli:

Anyway, here were the seven original takeaways:

Look, I don’t want to do this anymore than you do (hah, that’s the biggest lie I’ve told this year, I live for this), but a bunch of Giants players recently flew to Miami, got on a boat, took their shirts off, kept their boots on, refused to smile, and took a picture. And now, thanks to the internet, that picture is in our lives.

There is a lot to unpack here, and it would be irresponsible not to, so let’s unzip this virtual suitcase of meaning and get into it.

1. Everyone is wearing boots or sneakers on this boat

There are many risks that come with wearing shearling-lined Timbs on a speedboat in Miami. These include, but are not limited to: getting said boots wet and ruining the suede AND the shearling, sweating profusely from the feet, and drowning due to the added weight if you fall overboard.

Also: I used to work on boats. I am therefore a boat expert. So please trust me when I tell you that combining salt water, hot boots, and sweaty feet in such close boat quarters smells like what I imagine came out of that smoldering pit in the third Lord of the Rings movie where everybody almost dies.

2. Seriously, look at all the boots on this boat:

Here is a sneaker:

3. Trey Songz is there

Hahahahahaha here is Trey Songz:

miami boat trip giants

Why is Trey Songz there? Of all the people I could get to go on a boat with me if I were in a gaggle of famous football players, I’m not sure Trey Songz would be my first choice. Like, was this how getting Trey Songz on that boat went down?

Odell Beckham Jr.: “Man, we should get someone who isn’t a football player to come on this boat with us.”

Sterling Shepard: “Totally. Let’s see what Rick Ross is up to, he’s in Miami a lot, right? He likes taking his shirt off.”

Odell Beckham Jr.: “Nah, I was thinking of someone slightly more washed, like, oh, I don’t know, maybe Trey Songz.”

Sterling Shepard: “Great idea. Call him up, and tell him to wear those shorts that are slightly too long to be shorts but slightly too short to be capri pants.”

Odell Beckham Jr.: “On it.”

( According to the New York Daily News they were also hanging with Justin Bieber, though, so ...*shrug emoji*)

4. Why is no one wearing a life jacket?

Hello? Coast guard? At the risk of sounding like your mom, I would like to report dangerous behavior and extreme negligence on the part of the New York Giants because there is NARRY A PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE IN SIGHT!!!!

5. What kind of weird-ass boat is this?

The person who took this photograph is ostensibly standing on the bow (front) of the boat (boat), but that would mean that there’s a kind of bowsprit (stick-y out-y thing) on the bow (front), which is a weird thing for a power boat (boat) like this to have (possess).

5. Everyone looks pretty miserable

miami boat trip giants

6. But no one looks as miserable as Trey Songz

miami boat trip giants

7. Although, judging from Trey Songz’s Snapchat, he appeared to have a pretty good time

Trey Songz put up this instructional video where he plugs the services of his “guy” Francesco. It turns out that if you desire strippers, food, or “whatever” when you’re in Miami, just call Francesco, and he will bring them to you by jet ski.

Victor Cruz: Giants boat trip photo 'will haunt me for the rest of my life'

One of the most famous pictures of former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz during his tenure with the club is now a moment he regrets.

Before Big Blue faced Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in a January 2017 playoff game, Cruz, Odell Beckham Jr., and other New York players took their talents to South Beach for a brief vacation. A photo of what became an infamous "boat trip" showing Cruz, OBJ, and others went viral before the game, and New York players came under scrutiny after Green Bay notched a 25-point win .

Cruz addressed the situation while speaking with E!’s “Pop of the Morning” earlier this week:

"This photo will haunt me for the rest of my life," Cruz admitted.

"It was right after a game, and we were just about to go into the playoffs, and although we had the day off, we went to Miami, we had a good time, it was New Year’s Day, we came back the next day, didn’t break any rules."

Cruz's cause wasn't helped by the fact that he, Beckham, and other members of the New York offense not named Eli Manning were largely no-shows versus the Packers. Cruz was held to three catches. OBJ dropped multiple passes, including what should've been a touchdown:

As Bernie Augustine of The Daily News wrote, Cruz expressed regret regarding the Miami trip during a January 2017 appearance on the "Timeout with Taylor Rooks" podcast.

"Looking back on it, it definitely wasn't worth it," Cruz said.

Eli Manning pokes fun at Giants WRs' Miami trip, photo

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham (13) and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz (80) watch the action from the sideline during the second half at MetLife Stadium.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning said he was “disappointed” in his receivers’ trip to Miami on Monday.

But not for the reason you might think.

"They didn't pack accordingly,” Manning told reporters on Tuesday. “They didn't have any shirts."

Three things to know: Giants (5) at Packers (4) wild-card preview

A photo of Odell Beckham Jr. and several Giants receivers hanging out on a boat in Miami – with Justin Bieber – caused a social media stir, with people questioning whether they players should be going there ahead of Sunday's wild-card game against the Green Bay Packers.

All things Giants: Latest New York Giants news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

"I was telling people I'm the one who took the picture,” Manning said. “They just wouldn't let me in with my shirt off."

The Giants played in Landover, Md., on Sunday – knocking the Washington Redskins out of the playoffs – and were off until Tuesday.

The players – minus Bieber – were at the Giants facility on Tuesday.

Miami may boast some of the best things to see and do in Florida , but it's also a great base for exploring some of the Sunshine State's other highlights.

Maybe a charming town and some unique experiences will take your fancy. Or you feel the need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Miami's busy streets (especially around spring break) to some wide open spaces.

While you may spot the occasional gator wandering out of a canal or have a muscovy duck come pester you at the local park, there much more impressive wildlife encounters beyond the city limits of Miami . No matter what you want out of a day trip from Magic City, we've got you covered.

1. Meet sea turtles in Juno Beach and Jupiter

Travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

For one of the best family day trips near Miami, venture north to Juno Beach and visit Loggerhead Marine Life Center , dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of local sea turtles. It's a great space for seeing these magnificent creatures up close.

For more adorable animal encounters, Jupiter's Loxahatchee River Center features interactive exhibits, touch tanks, and live aquatic tanks where visitors can view and learn about local marine ecosystems. You can also head to Blowing Rocks Preserve , where you can see the largest Anastasia limestone shoreline on the Atlantic, blasting saltwater upward of 50 feet into the air.

For family-friendly eats, stop in at Juno Beach Cafe or Jetty's Waterfront Restaurant (the latter of which has a fantastic view of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ), and Jupiter Donut Factory for a tasty treat.

How to get to Juno Beach and Jupiter from Miami:  It's possible to take the TriRail from Miami up to West Palm Beach and make the rest of the journey in a Lyft or cab. But the most convenient option is driving (yours or a rental).

2. Explore coral reefs in three ways in Key Largo

Travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes (driving), 3 hours (public transport)

Key Largo is home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , a mostly underwater park home to brightly colored coral reefs that can be enjoyed in several ways. Get a glimpse via the underwater cam that live-streams into the nature center (and online) or book tickets for their renowned glass-bottom boat tours. Be aware these sell out quickly, but there are other glass-bottom boat tour providers near the park.

Those who prefer a closer look at the reefs are welcome to snorkel or even scuba dive in the park. You can easily spend a full day in Largo, and if you do, grab a seafood meal at a waterfront spot like Sundowners and Snooks, or something tucked away from the crowds like the quirky Mrs. Mac's.

How to get to Key Largo from Miami:  If you're anywhere near the Metrorail, it's possible to take it as far south as Dadeland, board the Route 38 bus further south and then transfer to the 301 (which can take you to Key Largo). If you're short on patience, shuttle buses like Greyhound and Flixbus can take you south slightly faster. Driving yourself is the quickest option for those short on time.

3. Have an all-day date in Fort Lauderdale

Travel time: 45 minutes

Less than an hour's journey north from Miami lies Fort Lauderdale – the perfect option for a quick romantic getaway.

Start with a stroll through the lush grounds of the Bonnet House , a quiet sanctuary complete with a butterfly garden. From there, whisper sweet nothings to your beau aboard the Las Olas Gondola  before sneaking in a romantic meal at Burlock Coast or The Katherine .

And finally, choose your own adventure: heart-pumping fun at Xtreme Action Park (complete with go-karts, laser tag and escape rooms), live entertainment at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (musicals, plays, ballets and then some), or a bit of gambling, comedy and music at Seminole Hard Rock Casino .

How to get to Fort Lauderdale from Miami:  As is the case for most destinations in Florida, having your own vehicle gives you the best flexibility. However, you can visit Fort Lauderdale by booking a ticket on the Tri-Rail or Brightline train and then using a car-share service to get around town.

4. Get away from it all, Everglades style

Travel time: 60 to 90 minutes

This massive national park extends far beyond Miami-Dade County limits, and if you want to get the full experience, you'll need at least a day. Start your day at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center to learn about the park and then walk along some of their nearby paved trails (make sure to try a milkshake from Robert Is Here or some bites at Everglades Gator Grill along the way).

Shark Valley Visitor Center is another beginner-friendly spot – you can rest your legs on a tram tour, hire some bikes and explore the area on two wheels, or even opt for an airboat ride (try Miccosukee Airboats ).

You'll get plenty of opportunities to see alligators, anhingas, turtles and more at either center, but if you want a more immersive experience, drive south to Flamingo, where hiking trails, kayaking, boating, camping and even on-site dining and accommodations ( Flamingo Lodge and Restaurant , should you feel so inclined) can all be found.

How to get to Everglades National Park from Miami:  Unfortunately, there are no public transit options to get from Miami to any of the Everglades visitor centers. Depending on traffic, it's just over an hour's drive west of Miami.

5. Explore a Bahamian island via golf cart in Bimini

Travel time: 2 hours and 40 minutes

Whether you've lived in South Florida a while or are just visiting, you may have wondered, "Can I day trip to the Bahamas from Miami?" The answer is yes! The journey is a bit longer than the rest of these day trips, involving a quick journey north to Fort Lauderdale and hopping on a ferry to Bimini.

Once there, you can rent a golf cart to explore all you can during your full day on the island. Snorkel around the wreckage of the Sapona (a concrete ship built during WWI), dine on conch at Joe's Conch Shack or grab a slice at Edith's Pizza, snap photos of the art at the Dolphin House Museum, and bask in the sun at Radio Beach.

You can also rent a day pass at Resorts World Bimini to enjoy their casino and other on-site amenities (but be warned, this might make you want to extend your trip for another day or two).

How to get to Bimini from Miami:  If you own a boat (or know someone who does), it's possible to sail to Bimini. If not, take the Brightline train to reach Fort Lauderdale in 40 minutes and then board the  Balearia ferry service for quick and easy passage to the island (don't forget to pack your passport).
