This article explains how to clear website cookies and other website data, including web history, from your iPad's Safari web browser. Instructions cover iPads running iOS 10 and later.
How to Clear Cookies and Web History on iPad
It's easy to delete website data, including cookies, and your web history at the same time.
Go to the iPad Settings .
Scroll down the menu in the left panel and choose Safari to display Safari's settings.
Tap Clear History and Website Data to delete all records of the websites you've been to on the iPad and all website data (cookies) collected.
Tap Clear to confirm you want to delete this information.
The Safari Privacy Mode keeps sites from showing up in your web history or accessing your cookies. It's easy to browse the iPad in privacy mode .
When you browse in Privacy Mode, the top menu bar in Safari is a dark gray color.
How to Clear Cookies From a Specific Website
Clearing cookies from a specific website is helpful if you have concerns with a single site but don't want your usernames and passwords cleared from the other websites you visit.
Go to Safari's settings and tap Advanced at the bottom of the screen.
Choose Website Data to open a list of websites.
If the website you're looking for isn't on the first page, tap Show All Sites to see the full list.
Swipe left and tap Delete . The data from that website is removed.
There is no confirmation screen following this step.
Or, tap the Edit button at the top of the screen. This puts a red circle with a minus sign next to each website. Selecting the button next to a website reveals the Delete button, which you tap to confirm your intent.
You can also remove the data from all the sites by tapping Remove All Website Data at the bottom of the list.
How to Prevent Cookies
You can prevent the iPad from accepting cookies from all Safari websites in the Settings screen.
Go to the Settings screen and tap Safari in the left panel.
Move the Block All Cookies toggle switch to the on/green position.
If you don't want to block all cookies, turn on Prevent Cross-Site Tracking for additional privacy.
Websites commonly put cookies , which are small pieces of data, on your browser to store information. This information can be a username to keep you logged in on your next visit or data used to track your visit to the website. If you visited a website you don't trust, delete that site's cookies from the iPad Safari web browser.
You can also delete your web history. The iPad keeps track of every website you visit, which is helpful for auto-completing website addresses when you try to find them again. However, it is awkward if you don't want anyone to know you visited a particular website, such as jewelry sites when shopping for your spouse's anniversary gift.

Cookies are pieces of data placed on your iPhone or iPad (or any other device on which you browse the internet) by the websites you visit in order to enhance your browsing experience and collect your data. From helping you retain login information to tracking what sites you typically visit or what items you are interested in on Amazon, cookies and their associated data can make your web experience quicker, smoother, and more intuitive. They can also be used to track you in ways you don't want, though, and after a while, cookies and their saved data can take up valuable storage space on your iPhone or iPad and diminish overall performance. Keep in mind, though, that clearing cookies on your iPhone will delete saved logins and other website information.
How to Delete Cookies from Safari on iPhone or iPad
If you're ready to clear cookies from Safari, here's what to do:
![title= how to clear cookies safari ipad](https://www.iphonelife.com/sites/iphonelife.com/files/styles/screenshot_iphonexr_660_2x/public/img_0837_2.png?itok=OiXFicT9)
When you clear cookies along with your Safari browsing history, you'll be able to save additional storage space. Also, if you ever have issues with Safari, clearing the cookies and history is beneficial in helping you troubleshoot. If you're ready to free up storage space on your iPhone by deleting cookies and clearing your Safari browsing history, here's how to go about it:
![how to clear cookies safari ipad Tap Safari](https://www.iphonelife.com/sites/iphonelife.com/files/styles/screenshot_iphonexr_660_2x/public/img-2637.png?itok=DNYMtngD)
And that's it! Remember that after you delete cookies on your iPhone or iPad, you will be logged out of any accounts you were signed into.
You can also permanently disable cookies on iPhone or iPad if you wish. Keep in mind that permanently disabling cookies may prevent websites from working properly. For example, you will likely be unable to log in to a website when entering your correct username and password. You might receive messages that will tell you to enable cookies or that cookies are turned off. Plus, some features may not work on a website. A good alternative to permanently disabling cookies on iPhone or iPad, if you want to prevent cookies from accumulating, is to turn on Private Browsing from within your Safari browser. But if you'd like to try disabling all cookie collection, here's how:

- You can clear your cache on Safari in just a few steps on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad.
- Clearing your cache, as well as history and cookies, can help resolve your device's performance issues.
- Clearing your cookies will clear your passwords as well, unless you save them with keychain.
A cache is a store of data. When you visit a website on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, the Safari browser keeps a snapshot of the pages you view.
If you go back to that website, Safari loads the cached page in an instant, instead of taking the time to retrieve the page from the internet again.
But an overloaded cache can take up storage space and cause your device to run inefficiently — and it could use a periodic clearing.
Here's what you need to know to clear your cache on Safari, as well as your cookies and browsing history.
How to clear Safari cache on Mac
You can either clear just your cache or your cache, history, and cookies.
Clear your cache
1. Click on the Safari tab at the top left of your screen and choose Preferences from the dropdown menu.
2. Click the Advanced tab of the menu that pops up.
3. At the end of the tab, select the Show Develop menu in menu bar box and close the Preferences menu.
4. Click the Develop tab from the Safari menu at the top of the page.
5. Click Empty Caches from the dropdown menu.
Clear your cache, history, and cookies
You may also want to clear your browsing history and cookies in addition to emptying your cache. Here's how to do that.
1. Choose the History tab at the top of your screen.
2. At the very bottom of the dropdown menu, choose Clear History.
3. A box pops up with a choice to clear the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history. Choose your time frame and click the Clear History button.
Once you clear the history, it will also clear the cache and cookies associated with that time period.
How to clear Safari cache on iPhone or iPad
To clear your cache and browsing history:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap Safari .
3. Tap Clear History and Website Data .
4. On the screen that pops up, choose Clear History and Data .
To clear your cache but not your browsing history:
3. Tap Advanced .
4. Tap Website Data .
5. Choose Remove All Website Data .
What happens to saved passwords when you clear your cache
When you clear your cache, history, and cookies, you may discover that Safari has logged you out of your favorite websites.
While clearing Safari's cache alone will not delete your passwords, clearing your history and cookies can. That's because when you empty your cookies, you will lose their password data saved in Safari as well. And keep in mind that clearing your history also clears its associated cookies.
Luckily, Apple has a solution to this problem. If you use iCloud, check your iCloud settings on your phone or computer.
Make sure that you've checked the box for Safari. As long as this box is checked, any passwords you save through your browser will stay safe in your keychain .

Step 1: Open Safari
To begin the process of clearing cookies in Safari on your iPad, you'll first need to launch the Safari browser . Safari is the default web browser on all Apple devices, including the iPad, and it offers a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to navigate the web and manage your browsing data.
Locate the Safari icon on your iPad's home screen. It's typically a blue compass-like icon with a white background. Tapping on this icon will open the Safari browser, providing you with access to a wide range of features and settings to customize your browsing experience.
Upon launching Safari, you'll be greeted by the browser's home screen, which may display your frequently visited websites, bookmarks, and reading lists. At the bottom of the screen, you'll find the address bar, where you can enter website URLs and perform web searches. Additionally, the bottom of the screen also houses the navigation buttons, allowing you to navigate between web pages, access your open tabs, and manage your browsing history.
Once Safari is open, you're ready to proceed to the next step in the process of clearing cookies on your iPad. With Safari at your fingertips, you're one step closer to optimizing your browsing experience and taking control of your online privacy.
Opening Safari is the initial step in the process of clearing cookies, setting the stage for the subsequent steps that will guide you through the process of managing your browsing data effectively. With Safari now open on your iPad, you're ready to move on to the next step and continue the process of clearing cookies to enhance your browsing experience.
Step 2: Access the Settings
After launching Safari on your iPad, the next step in clearing cookies involves accessing the browser's settings. Safari's settings provide you with the necessary controls to manage various aspects of your browsing experience, including privacy and security features. By navigating to the settings section, you can access the options to clear cookies and browsing data, ensuring that you maintain a clean and optimized browsing environment.
To access the settings in Safari, look for the "Settings" icon, which resembles a gear or cogwheel, typically located on the home screen of your iPad. Tapping on this icon will open the main settings menu, where you can customize various aspects of your device's functionality and applications.
Once you're in the settings menu, scroll down or swipe up to locate the "Safari" option. The Safari settings allow you to configure specific preferences related to the browser, such as search engine selection, content blockers, and privacy settings. Tap on the "Safari" option to access the browser's individual settings.
Within the Safari settings, you'll find a range of options to customize your browsing experience. Look for the "Clear History and Website Data" option, which is specifically designed to remove browsing history, cookies, and other website data from your device. Tapping on this option will prompt a confirmation dialog, ensuring that you intend to clear your browsing data.
Upon confirming your selection, Safari will proceed to clear your browsing history and cookies, effectively removing stored data that may impact your privacy and browsing performance. It's important to note that clearing your browsing data will log you out of websites and remove any stored preferences, so it's advisable to proceed with this action only when necessary.
Accessing the settings in Safari is a crucial step in the process of clearing cookies on your iPad, as it grants you access to the necessary controls to manage your browsing data effectively. Upon confirming your selection, Safari will begin the process of clearing your browsing history, cookies, and other website data from your device. This action effectively removes stored information that may impact your privacy and browsing performance.
Once the process is complete, Safari will have successfully cleared your cookies and browsing data, providing you with a clean and optimized browsing environment on your iPad.
It's important to note that clearing cookies and data will log you out of websites and remove any stored preferences. As a result, you may need to re-enter login information and reconfigure website settings after completing this action. However, the benefits of clearing cookies and data, such as improved privacy and browsing performance, outweigh the inconvenience of re-entering website credentials.

Live Photo Lock Screens Are the Best iPhone Feature You’re Not Using
Mid-range android vs. old iphone: you should buy the iphone, if you’ve never used the iphone shortcuts app, here’s the best way to get started, quick links, clear cookies / cache for a specific website.
Clearing the cache on your iPhone or iPad is really easy, but that will log you out of every single website that you were previously logged into, and wipe any other cookie-based preferences. So what if you want to just wipe cookies or cache for a single site?
Luckily that's also pretty easy... though not quite as simple since you'll have to dig through a list of all the sites you've ever visited or that have put cookies on your device.
You might be asking yourself why you'd bother doing this, and the answer is simple: if a particular site is misbehaving you can wipe the cache and cookies just for that site, login again, and sometimes the problem will be resolved.
First you'll want to open up the Settings app, and then find Safari on the left-hand side, and then scroll down until you see the Advanced on the right-hand side. If you're using an iPhone it won't display like this, but you'll be able to easily figure it out.
Now press the Website Data button.
And now push the Edit text button on the upper right-hand corner.
Now you'll see a list of the sites that have put cookies on your device. You'll probably need to expand to show all of the sites, and then browse down through the list. Once you've found the one you want to wipe, just hit the red minus icon and then press Delete, just like you would in most iOS apps.
There isn't a whole lot more to it.

You can delete specific cookies for any website from the Safari web browser on iPhone and iPad fairly easily. Though the setting to do so is buried a bit, it’s super easy to use and provides a lot of control, offering a complete list of all cookies stored on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and allowing you to edit or remove any cookies on an individual basis. The process is the same in all versions of iOS, as we will detail below.
How to Delete Specific Web Site Cookies & Data in Safari for iPhone and iPad
If you want to remove a cookie and website data for a specific website URL in iOS, here is what you’ll need to do:
- Open the “Settings” app and tap on “Safari”
- Scroll to the bottom and tap on “Advanced”
- Tap “Website Data”
- Tap “Edit” in the upper right corner, then tap the red (-) minus symbol next to the individual website you wish to remove cookies from followed by the “Delete” button
![how to clear cookies safari ipad How to delete site specific website data and cookies in Safari on iPhone or iPad](https://cdn.osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/delete-site-specific-website-data-cookies-safari-iphone-ios-settings-369x800.jpg)
You can repeat this process to delete other specific site cookies and website data as needed. Tap on the “Show All Sites” button to see all other websites with data if you’d like to delete those.
Optionally, you can also use the “Remove All” option at the bottom of the Website Data screen as well to delete all cookies and website data for all websites in Safari.
While in the Website Data screen, you can also choose to swipe to the left on individual site names and then tap on “Delete” from there to delete specific website data and cookies too.
This process is the same for all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, regardless of what system software version they are running.
Exit out of Settings when finished, you can refresh the site in question within Safari to verify the removal worked.
You can also choose to remove all website data and cookies from that settings panel, as indicated by the humungous red button at the bottom of the settings window. If you’re looking to remove all site data, there is a faster way to clear all cookies, history, and cache however that will ditch all browsing data in one fell swoop.
Why might you want to delete an individual sites cookie? First and foremost are privacy purposes and to remove personal data from a website, but a lot of sites also use cookies to track your behavior and then adjust things based on what you do. For example, if you are booking hotels or flights from an iPad or iPhone, many travel sites use cookies to track your searches and adjust pricing based on the frequency of searches and perceived demand. In that case, deleting cookies specific to the site can mean the difference in hundreds of dollars for final bookings.
If you are looking to just briefly avoid cookies for some reason, another option is to temporarily use Private Browsing mode so that no cookies, history, or caches are stored on the device. This has the same effect as deleting a cookie in that it starts a fresh browsing session for any specific site, except that any old cookies for those domains will not be removed.
This feature has been around for quite some time, and just in case you have a notably older device then here is what the Safari site-specific cookie menu looks like in an older iOS version on an iPad:
![delete-specific-cookies-ios Delete Site Specific Cookies in iOS](https://cdn.osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/delete-specific-cookies-ios.jpg)
As you can see you’ll find a list of domains for each batch of website data and cookies, and you can edit or remove any of them as needed there too.
If you know of any other methods of deleting and removing website specific data on iPhone and iPad, share in the comments below!

Both my iPad and iPhone are iOS 11.0.3. iPhone 8 does not yet have a problem. iPad Air 2 has seven site specific zombie/super cookie remnants that will not delete. I’m tired of writing to Apple about it. They just don’t care enough to fix the problem. Can’t get into the OS to find and delete the corrupted file. Can’t find a software that will do it for me. Aggravating to say the least.
I have the same issue as Lily and it also seems to save cookies in private browsing mode
the re are two cookies that I CANNOT remove on safari’s advanced settings. I’m on iOS 10.3.3 how and why can’t I remove them? although it’s on 67kb, the point is they cannot be removed. I e tried, resting, factory reset, and just palin deleting it. any help advise would be appreciated.
This seems to only remove some data, but not cookies.
How do you alphabetically organize the cookie list so that you can quickly find specific cookies
I wish you could BLOCK specific sites from leaving cookies, like Facebook for example. I don’t use their service and don’t want them tracking my web habits.
I guess we could always use Private Browsing but that is not the solution I am hoping for, maybe iOS 6 will deliver some details here.
Good trick, but if you’re like me and you never use the iPhone for anything that needs to be personalized you can prevent Safari from storing any cookies at all by going to Settings > Safari > Accept Cookies > Never

How to clear cookies on iPhone and why you should do it periodically
Accumulating cookies on your iPhone can lead to various issues such as slow website loading times, decreased device performance, and potential privacy concerns due to tracking of online activity.
To help address these annoyances, we’ll show you how to effectively delete cookies for all or selected websites in popular browsers like Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Opera on your iPhone or iPad.
![how to clear cookies safari ipad Cookie banner on iPhone](https://media.idownloadblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Cookie-banner-on-iPhone.jpg)

What are cookies?
Cookies are small files that a website saves locally on your device, which ensures the site can recognize you the next time you visit it from that same computer, phone, or tablet.
For example, after you sign in on Amazon.com , you don’t have to enter your email and password to log in again, even after you restart your computer. This is because Amazon placed a cookie on your computer, which helps it authenticate that you have already logged in recently, and thus there is no need to do it again.
Similarly, ad networks and participating sites can place cookies, including third-party tracking cookies, which remember your preferences and thus help target relevant ads across almost any website you visit.
For example, if you search for the best iPhone cases , the search engine will store a cookie on your device for this. Now, when you visit any other website (even other than this search engine), the ad networks will use that cookie to show you ads for iPhone cases. And since you were already interested in iPhone cases, you will be more likely to click on these ads, which is good for the advertiser, ad network, the website where you saw the ad, and even you since you get to see relevant product ads.
Why delete cookies?
Overall, cookies can appear helpful, and they are in most cases. You probably don’t want to log in to Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, Google, Gmail, YouTube, your college website, and most other sites every time you open your browser, right?
Similarly, seeing relevant ads also has no direct drawback.
However, as stated briefly in the intro, there can be multiple concerns about it. Here are some important ones:
- Lagging browser: A huge pile of cookies can slow your browser down.
- Page loading issues: Sometimes, the site may not load properly or show correct pages due to old cookies.
- Slows the device: Your iPhone or iPad can appear sluggish and overheat when you’re inside that browser.
- Wrong pricing: You may see inflated prices for certain things. For example, if you search for flight tickets once, the website may place a cookie with that price. Now, even after the price decreases, you may continue to see the old, more expensive prices.
- Occupies space: Although an individual cookie is tiny in size (just a few KBs), many of them can add up and start occupying a significant portion of your local iPhone storage .
- Privacy issues: Cookies, especially third-party cookies , can expose your privacy by sharing your data with other parties.
What happens after you clear all cookies?
Once you delete all cookies for all sites from your iPhone or iPad browser, you will have to log in again to all the sites you were logged in to. Besides that, you will have to re-allow or decline site preferences like camera, location, microphone, and other access.

Delete Cookies on an iPad in Safari
![how to clear cookies safari ipad YouTube video](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dymKWea_600/hqdefault.jpg)
To clear cookies from your iPad, you need to do it via your web browser. For iPad users, the Safari browser is the best place to start. Follow these steps to remove cookies on your iPad via the Safari browser:
Step 1: Launch the Settings App on your iPad.
Step 2: On your left pane, scroll downwards and choose Safari , next tap on Advanced, and on the right pane, choose Website Data .
Step 3: While still on the right pane, navigate to the last item and tap on Remove All Website Data.
You have successfully cleared cookies on your iPad Safari. However, your browsing history on Safari is still available, and this can also be another reason the device seems to process requests slowly. You might want to clear your browsing history as well. To clear your iPad’s browsing history on Safari, proceed as follows:
Step 1: Start your iPad’s Settings App .
Step 2: Scroll and choose Safari .
Step 3: On the right pane, select Clear History and Website Data .
Step 4: Confirm your selection by tapping Clear History and Data in the pop-up notification.
Your Safari app is now free from cookies and browsing history. If these were the cause of sluggish processing speed, you would be able to see a significant improvement from now on.
Clear Cookies on iPad in Other Browsers

Unlike Safari, where cookies controls are in the Settings app, third-party browsers have the controls in the apps settings menu. Here is a straightforward process to deleting cookies in Chrome, for instance;
Step 1: Launch the Chrome browser app on your iPad and then tap on the ellipsis symbol ( Three Dots) on the top right corner of the application.
Step 2: In the new display screen, choose Settings , and then tap on Privacy .
Step 3: In the pop-up menu, tap Clear Browsing Data .
Step 4: Select the type of browsing data you intend to delete; C ookies or All Browsing data .
Step 5: Tap on Clear Browsing Data and confirm your selection.
Just like that, all the cookies and or browsing history is cleared on Chrome. It is worth mentioning that removing cookies on most other third-party browsers is very similar to that for Chrome.
Pro Tip! Erasing your cookies and browsing data, including history in Safari and third-party browsers, will not alter your AutoFill information.

Key Takeaways
- Clearing the cache in the YouTube app or your web browser can help resolve some technical issues without deleting preferences or other permanent data.
- On Android devices, open Settings, then select Apps -> YouTube -> Storage & cache and choose Clear cache .
- On desktops, you can't clear the cache for a specific website, so you'll have to clear your browser's cache for all websites.
Whether you're binging vlogs or learning how to put a cabinet together, it's terrible to have a technical issue interrupt your YouTube viewing. If things aren't working quite right in the mobile app or the desktop website, clearing your cache is often a good place to start. Don't worry -- it won't remove your preferences or permanent data. It's just wiping temporary files used to speed things up, and the cache will rebuild itself automatically.
In this guide, we'll take you through the process of clearing your cache on Android or your web browser. Unfortunately, the iPhone and iPad app doesn't allow you to clear the cache, but you can get similar results by reinstalling it, so we'll walk you through that process too.
Best streaming devices: Improve your streaming experience on any TV
Even if you have a smart TV, these devices can make streaming even better.
How to clear the YouTube app cache on Android

Google Chrome
- In the top-right corner of your browser window, click the three dots .
- Select Clear browsing data .
- In the Basic tab's Time range drop-down menu, choose All time .

Here's what you need to do:
- Find the YouTube app on your homescreen.
- Tap and hold the YouTube app icon.
- Choose Remove App .
- Confirm by tapping Delete App .
- Once the app is gone, download YouTube again from the App Store.
Other YouTube troubleshooting tips
If you're still having problems with YouTube, there are a few other things you can try. Here are some solutions that might help.
Check your network
Are you sure that your internet is working end-to-end? If you're reading this, we'd imagine so, but if you're trying to watch YouTube on a separate device, then a good first step is to ensure that it's connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or else has an adequate cellular signal. If your network has a filter that blocks adult content, this could potentially cause issues, too.
Check for updates
Make sure the YouTube app and/or your web browser have the latest updates applied. This is a good practice in general, but may specifically fix bugs and compatibility issues, which could be at the root of your trouble.
Sign into YouTube
Some content on YouTube is age-restricted, so if you aren't signed in, it might not allow you to watch. You'll want to do this anyway to improve recommendations and create playlists.
Restart your device
The classic troubleshooting advice parroted by every IT worker for decades still holds true today. If you're experiencing weird issues, it's always worth turning your device off and back on again. This will clear some system-level caches and force all apps to launch fresh.

How Europe can force Apple to support competition
Open web advocacy report calls for these extensive changes to igiant's rules.
Exclusive The results of the European Commission's inquiry into Apple's response to the continent's competition rules are expected to surface soon – and reports indicate the regulators are less than enamored with Cook & Co.
In anticipation of the findings and what they may mean for Apple, Open Web Advocacy (OWA) – an international developer-focused group set up to get politicians up-to-date on technical details - today will issue its assessment of Apple's compliance proposal, with recommendations for how the iBiz might meet its legal obligations.
A draft copy of the OWA report , provided to The Register ahead of time, claims Apple has failed to comply with the DMA, and has done so in ways that make life as painful as possible for competitors.
"Apple is using every tool at its disposal to dissuade developers from leaving their app store and to undermine the goals of the DMA," argues the report, which spans more than 100 pages.
Apple is using every tool at its disposal to dissuade developers from leaving their app store
On January 25, Apple announced how it intends to change its business practices and rules to meet the requirements of Europe's recently enacted competition law, the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Under the DMA last year, the European Commission designated six dominant gatekeepers – Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft – and required these corporations to make changes to their products, services, and business practices to promote competition.
"The DMA aims at preventing gatekeepers from imposing unfair conditions on businesses and end users and at ensuring the openness of important digital services," the commission explained.
In the case of Apple, the DMA has taken aim at the rules Apple imposes, through its App Store Guidelines and its various developer agreements , on third-party developers for iOS and other platforms – including limitations on payment processing, app distribution, browser engines, sales commissions, and so on.
Those rules have forbidden, among other things, the use of any browser engine other than WebKit in iOS browsers.
For Google and rivals offering Chromium-based browsers, and for Mozilla with Firefox, the requirement that all iOS browsers implement WebKit – the technical foundation of Apple's Safari – precludes the possibility of competitive differentiation. There is no meaningful browser competition within the iOS ecosystem, because every browser is more or less Safari.
What's more, Apple's browser rule has limited the capabilities available to web apps that might otherwise be able to compete with native iOS apps – a situation that benefits Apple financially due to its control of the native iOS app distribution channel, the App Store. Google's payments to Apple to remain the default search engine for Safari.
Apple's concessions [PDF], articulated with the arrival of the DMA compliance deadline on March 7 failed to impress critics, who have accused Cupertino of malicious compliance . The iPhone maker announced support for third-party app stores, a browser choice screen, alternative payment mechanisms, and alternative web browser engines in the EU, among other things.
Unimpressed, the European Commission opened a non-compliance investigation into Apple. The OWA report is being made available under the hope that the commission will demand further changes from Apple.
The Register asked Apple to comment on that possibility, with absolutely no expectation of a reply.
Apple's main argument, the report asserts, has been that only Cupertino can be trusted to vet the apps and browsers available on iOS devices – a claim the UK's Competition and Markets Authority found wanting when it considered the issue.
The report cites the CMA's finding : "Overall, the evidence we have received to date does not suggest that Apple's WebKit restriction allows for quicker and more effective response to security threats for dedicated browser apps on iOS."
It also points to the CMA's interpretation of the incentives for Apple's behavior: "Apple receives significant revenue from Google by setting Google Search as the default search engine on Safari, and therefore benefits financially from high usage of Safari. … The WebKit restriction may help to entrench this position by limiting the scope for other browsers on iOS to differentiate themselves from Safari."
As noted last year , Apple is believed to receive between $18 billion and $20 billion from Google annually to set Google Search as the default search engine in Safari, according to financial firm Bernstein.

European commission may be about to put the squeeze on apple for its app store rules, japan forces apple and google to allow third-party app stores and payments.
The OWA report asks the commission to open proceedings against Apple and to investigate what the group alleges is "severe and deliberate non-compliance."
Its lengthy set of recommendations include:
- Restricting Apple's API contract for browsers down to strictly necessary, proportionate and justified security measures;
- Making clear what the security measures are for third-party browsers using their own engine, by publishing them in a single up-to-date document;
- Removing any App Store rule that would prevent third-party browsers from competing fairly;
- Allowing browser vendors to keep their existing EU consumers when switching to use their own engine;
- Removing the special placement of Safari;
- Making Safari uninstallable;
- Implementing install prompts in iOS Safari for web apps;
- Allowing browser vendors and developers to be able to test their browsers and web software outside the EU;
- Allowing browsers using their own engine to install and manage web apps;
- Making notarization a fast and automatic process, as on macOS;
- Allowing direct browser installation independently from Apple's App Store;
- Allowing users to switch to different distribution methods of a native app and allow developers to promote that option to the user;
- Not breaking third-party browsers for EU residents who are traveling;
- Removing the Opt-Into Rights contract;
- Removing the Core Technology Fee;
- Publishing a new more detailed compliance plan.
"We urge the commission to enforce the DMA and obligate Apple to allow browsers and web apps to compete fairly and effectively on their mobile ecosystem," the report declares.
"This will unlock contestability, fairness and interoperability. Companies will then have to compete for users on merit, not via lock-in or control over operating systems. Consumers will benefit from choice, better quality and cheaper software, interoperability, and the genuine ability to multihome across devices and operating systems offered by different companies."
OWA is not the only advocacy group underwhelmed by Apple's response to the DMA.
The Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) would like to see the DMA interpreted more broadly to ensure Device Neutrality . In April the organization published a report [PDF] on the subject.
Lucas Lasota, legal program manager for The Free Software Foundation Europe, told The Register that the group took exception to Apple's requirement that developers submit their apps to Apple to be "notarized," even if not distributed through the App Store.
Notarization – originally offered as a way to vet macOS apps distributed outside the App Store – has been extended to iOS for alternative distribution scenarios. It consists of a set of automated checks that aspire to check the validity of developer signatures, to catch malware, and ensure compliance with various requirements .
We are of the opinion such 'notarization' is absolutely not compliant with DMA
"Regarding our Apple report to EC, if I could summarize one key takeaway for you is the problematic concept of 'notarization' that Apple is promoting as a legit condition to be imposed on developers, and we are of the opinion such 'notarization' is absolutely not compliant with DMA," argued Lasota.
"For Apple, 'notarization' actually means ingestion, processing and further bundle distribution of apps through App Store Connect (ASC) and encrypted with Apple's proprietary DRM. In other words: complete and unlimited control over distribution of apps in iOS. This is a no-go for Free Software, as it creates an encrypted barrier to access source code of apps."
Basically, OWA and FSFE contend that Apple should make iOS devices to function more like general purpose computers running a variety of operating systems. But as OWA observes, the estimated $20 billion that Apple receives from Google annually is "an amount so significant that it's unlikely Apple would willingly enable competition unless compelled.
"By standing firm against Apple's malicious compliance and forcing them to comply with their obligations under the Act as intended, the commission can improve interoperability, contestability, and fairness leading to lower priced and higher quality apps – not only for the EU but for the entire world," the OWA report concludes. ®
