Grenada celebrates double-digit growth in tourism arrivals

grenada tourism

Grenada has been recognized for its significant double-digit growth in overseas tourist arrivals for the first half of 2024, as reported by The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) in collaboration with ForwardKeys.

This achievement was highlighted in the latest Caribbean Travel Trends report, presented at the Caribbean Travel Forum in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Dubbed “The Spice Isle,” Grenada is anticipating a remarkable 19% increase in tourist arrivals compared to the previous year for the first half of 2024.

The island has already recorded a 30% increase in arrivals for the first quarter of 2024, reflecting its successful efforts in enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainable tourism, and executing strategic marketing campaigns. Grenada shares these impressive growth figures with St. Maarten.

In addition to this growth, Grenada was selected as one of only four destinations—alongside Jamaica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico—to be featured as a case study for sustainability initiatives in the tourism industry.

This honor highlights Grenada’s commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage while appealing to environmentally conscious travelers.

Petra Roach, CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority, stated, “Our focus on sustainable tourism and community involvement has been central to our growth. By offering unique experiences such as the recently expanded Molinière Underwater Sculpture Park, we have been able to attract eco-conscious travelers while preserving our natural and cultural heritage.”

The CHTA and ForwardKeys report underscores the importance of data-driven insights in navigating the evolving travel landscape. As Grenada continues to leverage its tourism strengths, this recognition highlights the island’s potential to sustain its upward growth trajectory in the global market.

Grenada - International tourism, number of arrivals

The value for International tourism, number of arrivals in Grenada was 217,000 as of 2020. As the graph below shows, over the past 25 years this indicator reached a maximum value of 529,000 in 2018 and a minimum value of 217,000 in 2020.

Definition: International inbound tourists (overnight visitors) are the number of tourists who travel to a country other than that in which they have their usual residence, but outside their usual environment, for a period not exceeding 12 months and whose main purpose in visiting is other than an activity remunerated from within the country visited. When data on number of tourists are not available, the number of visitors, which includes tourists, same-day visitors, cruise passengers, and crew members, is shown instead. Sources and collection methods for arrivals differ across countries. In some cases data are from border statistics (police, immigration, and the like) and supplemented by border surveys. In other cases data are from tourism accommodation establishments. For some countries number of arrivals is limited to arrivals by air and for others to arrivals staying in hotels. Some countries include arrivals of nationals residing abroad while others do not. Caution should thus be used in comparing arrivals across countries. The data on inbound tourists refer to the number of arrivals, not to the number of people traveling. Thus a person who makes several trips to a country during a given period is counted each time as a new arrival.

Development Relevance: Tourism is officially recognized as a directly measurable activity, enabling more accurate analysis and more effective policy. Whereas previously the sector relied mostly on approximations from related areas of measurement (e.g. Balance of Payments statistics), tourism today possesses a range of instruments to track its productive activities and the activities of the consumers that drive them: visitors (both tourists and excursionists). An increasing number of countries have opened up and invested in tourism development, making tourism a key driver of socio-economic progress through export revenues, the creation of jobs and enterprises, and infrastructure development. As an internationally traded service, inbound tourism has become one of the world's major trade categories. For many developing countries it is one of the main sources of foreign exchange income and a major component of exports, creating much needed employment and development opportunities.

Limitations and Exceptions: Tourism can be either domestic or international. The data refers to international tourism, where the traveler's country of residence differs from the visiting country. International tourism consists of inbound (arrival) and outbound (departures) tourism. The data are from the World Tourism Organization (WTO), a United Nations agency. The data on inbound and outbound tourists refer to the number of arrivals and departures, not to the number of people traveling. Thus a person who makes several trips to a country during a given period is counted each time as a new arrival. The data on inbound tourism show the arrivals of nonresident tourists (overnight visitors) at national borders. When data on international tourists are unavailable or incomplete, the data show the arrivals of international visitors, which include tourists, same-day visitors, cruise passengers, and crew members.

Statistical Concept and Methodology: Statistical information on tourism is based mainly on data on arrivals and overnight stays along with balance of payments information. These data do not completely capture the economic phenomenon of tourism or provide the information needed for effective public policies and efficient business operations. Data are needed on the scale and significance of tourism. Information on the role of tourism in national economies is particularly deficient. Although the World Tourism Organization reports progress in harmonizing definitions and measurement, differences in national practices still prevent full comparability. Arrivals data measure the flows of international visitors to the country of reference: each arrival corresponds to one in inbound tourism trip. If a person visits several countries during the course of a single trip, his/her arrival in each country is recorded separately. In an accounting period, arrivals are not necessarily equal to the number of persons travelling (when a person visits the same country several times a year, each trip by the same person is counted as a separate arrival). Arrivals data should correspond to inbound visitors by including both tourists and same-day non-resident visitors. All other types of travelers (such as border, seasonal and other short-term workers, long-term students and others) should be excluded as they do not qualify as visitors. Data are obtained from different sources: administrative records (immigration, traffic counts, and other possible types of controls), border surveys or a mix of them. If data are obtained from accommodation surveys, the number of guests is used as estimate of arrival figures; consequently, in this case, breakdowns by regions, main purpose of the trip, modes of transport used or forms of organization of the trip are based on complementary visitor surveys.

Tourism forecast looking promising

grenada tourist arrivals

Amidst an uptick in tourist arrivals last year, Grenada is anticipating an increase of about 365% in visitor arrivals in 2022, with promising projections for the industry to return to pre COVID-19 levels by December 2023.

The projection was announced last week Tuesday by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) Petra Roach, who provided an update on the performance of the industry as it recovers amidst the pandemic, weeks after revision of the COVID-19 entry protocols removing the testing requirement upon arrival at the Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA), and the quarantine requirement for fully vaccinated travellers.

Over 42, 000 stay-over visitors were recorded from January to December last year, along with over 4, 000 yacht visitors, and 175, 000 cruise passengers, 25, 000 of them visiting during November and December.

Tourism officials are expecting an increase of 226% in the yachting industry, while the cruise industry, which CEO Roach notes has seen “exponential growth because of the bubble tours that we’ve implemented.”

The Barbadian-born GTA CEO also announced the start of a new airline service from Boston in November and resumption of flights from Canada later on in the year.

She also outlined plans for marketing campaigns geared to boost visitor arrivals this year, with the unique proposition of “one destination but three islands to explore.”

This, she stated, “is going to be a big thrust for us with the summer campaign, where we are looking to offer families the opportunity to get discounted travel to Carriacou or Petite Martinique (from) discount Osprey tickets.”

The CEO disclosed that GTA is also “looking to run some local summer camps,” with the “local professional football association, and the professional cricket association” in an attempt to “continue redefine, what our product looks like on the ground.

Roach stressed that the priorities for the brand “continues to be centered around sustainability, conservation, travel with a purpose” with health and wellness, romance, culinary, soft adventure and nautical identified among the “niches where we see the biggest growth potential.”

As British Airways and Virgin Airlines continue with their twice-weekly service, Roach spoke of challenges in terms of accessing direct flights to the island.

“The challenge that we have at the minute is that we still have to fly over other destinations”, she said and pointed to Antigua, and Barbados.   Roach also referred to Grenada’s “aggressive” tourism forecast for 2022 at a Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) press conference following the post-Cabinet media brief.

According to the statistics provided, the United States is currently the dominant market with approximately 64% of the overall business, followed by the United Kingdom with 16%, while Canada and the Caribbean each contribute 7%.

“If we look at where we are going for 2022, it is when we get to December next year that we expect that the numbers will be very similar to what they were before. And also, subject to us getting some additional lift out of the US, we would expect to also see October /November growing significantly over where 2019 numbers were,” Roach said optimistically.

Growth of “23%” is expected in 2023 over 2022, and with “up to 4% in 2024 over 2023,” a realization that Roach, however, explained will be “predicated on some conversations that we are having currently in terms of additional lifts to the island.”

The tri-island destination has a current stock of 2, 500 rooms, 2293 on mainland Grenada, 214 in Carriacou, and 17 in Petite Martinique.

  • Grenada Celebrates Remarkable Surge in Visitor Arrivals

The Grenada Tourism Authority has recorded a substantial increase in visitor arrivals to our beautiful island paradise, demonstrating an impressive upward trend as a preferred Caribbean destination of choice.

The first quarter of 2024 saw a significant increase in visitors for Grenada. Travelers from the United States played a significant role in this growth, with a 27.1% increase in stopover visitors. This represents a rise from 22,734 in the first quarter of 2023 to 28,889 in the corresponding period of 2024. In a continued show of growth, the United Kingdom similarly contributed a 15.4% increase in visitors, recording 7,780 stopovers in the first quarter of 2023 to 8,982 stopovers in the first quarter of 2024.

Grenada continues to impress with its positive momentum on the global travel and tourism fronts, as the country experienced a substantial 28.6% increase in visitation during the first three months of 2024. This growth trajectory ballooned from 45,837 in the first quarter of 2023 to 58,941 in the same period of 2024.

Incredible natural beauty, rich cultural experiences, and warm hospitality have always been hallmarks of Grenada’s allure,” says Randall Dolland , Chairman of the Grenada Tourism Authority. “Our sustained growth in visitor arrivals reflects the growing recognition of Grenada as a premier travel destination that stays true to the cultural offerings of our tri-island paradise.”

For the month of March 2024, Grenada welcomed a total of 22,185 visitors, marking a staggering 35.5% increase compared to the 16,369 stopovers received in March 2023. Additionally, March 2024 witnessed 53,873 cruise visitors and 2,254 arrivals by yacht – further highlighting Grenada’s bumper travel demand across various segments of the travel market.

Notably, the United States remains the largest source market for Grenada, recording 11,008 overnight arrivals in March 2024, representing 49.6% of all arrivals. Grenada was also a destination of choice for 2,905 visitors from the United Kingdom in the same month – accounting for 13.1% of the total stopovers for the month.

“The increase in arrivals underscores Grenada’s growing appeal as a dynamic, must-visit destination,” adds Petra Roach. “Our strategic focus on enhancing flight connectivity and celebrating community tourism have played a pivotal role in attracting visitors from key source markets.”

These announcements come on the heels of Grenada hosting the Caribbean Tourism Organization Sustainable Tourism Conference in April 2024 – the largest conference in the organization’s history.

As the travel industry moves into 2024’s highly-anticipated summer travel period, The Grenada Tourism Authority and its tourism stakeholders remain steadfast in its commitment to fostering Grenada’s growth as a destination that offers safe, enriching and unforgettable experiences for visitors from around the world.

Grenada’s Growth Recognized by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association

St. George— Grenada was recently recognized by The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), in partnership with ForwardKeys, as achieving significant double-digit growth in overseas tourist arrivals for the first half of 2024. This announcement was unveiled in the latest Caribbean Travel Trends report presented at the Caribbean Travel Forum in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Grenada, known as “The Spice Isle,” is forecasting a remarkable 19% increase in tourist arrivals compared to the previous year for the first half of 2024. Additionally, the island has already achieved a 30% increase in tourist arrivals for the first quarter of 2024, highlighting its successful efforts in boosting its tourism sector through enhanced connectivity, sustainable tourism initiatives, and strategic marketing campaigns. Grenada is tied with St. Maarten for these impressive growth figures.

Furthermore, Grenada was selected as one of only four destinations, alongside Jamaica, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, to be featured as a case study showcasing the importance of sustainability initiatives in the tourism industry. This recognition underscores the island’s commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage while attracting environmentally conscious travelers.

The CHTA and ForwardKeys report emphasizes the importance of data-driven insights in navigating the evolving travel landscape. As Grenada continues to capitalize on its tourism strengths, this recognition underscores the island’s potential to sustain its growth trajectory in the global market.
