Why Go To Fort Lauderdale

To the citizens of Fort Lauderdale, their home offers quintessential Florida – beaches, palm trees, shopping and relaxation – without the see-and-be-seen attitude of the state's other beachside cities. You can judge if they're right, but certainly expect a different atmosphere than their close rival  Miami Beach . Fort Lauderdale's wide stretches of white sand surpass those of its southern neighbor and, to some, are the best shores statewide . And when you consider its fantastic scenery, great dining options and range of things to do , Fort Lauderdale is also somewhat affordable compared to similar vacation spots. The "Venice of America," nicknamed for its 165 miles of waterways and canals, is slowly but surely climbing the ranks of top beach destinations to the cheer of its residents.

Fort Lauderdale Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Fort Lauderdale is between December and April. Yes, anytime in that whole half of the year. The warm climate (between the high 50s and mid-80s) makes it an ideal getaway for anyone looking to escape bitter winter temperatures. For this reason, many from the north flock to the south, making December through April Fort Lauderdale's high season, so expect some crowds. Summer and fall are susceptible to rain and hurricanes, with the official hurricane season running from June 1 to Nov. 30. If you're traveling at that time (particularly the summer), pack light clothing, a hat, an umbrella and plenty of sunscreen. Also consider travel insurance in the event bad weather forces you to change your vacation plans.

What You Need to Know

It's all in the name The city's confusing thoroughfares adhere to one strange bit of logic – naming. "Avenues" and "drives" run north-south, and "streets," "boulevards" and "roads" run east-west.

It's unbelievably close You would suspect that Florida's large size corresponds to great distances between cities and attractions. South Florida dismisses this notion with West Palm Beach , Fort Lauderdale and Miami all within 75 miles (less than 1½ hours, sans traffic) of one another.

Its peak season is winter  Thousands of snowbirds (older temporary residents) move here every winter to escape the cold and snow in their home states. As such, roads are often congested this time of year, so be extra alert while driving. On the highway, slower vehicles usually stick to the right lane.

How to Save Money in Fort Lauderdale

Broaden your flight search  South Florida's density makes it easy to get here from multiple airports, including those in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach  and Miami .

Check the tourism board The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau offers discounts to various attractions , tours and hotels  on the LauderDEALS  page of its website.

Head to the beach Fort Lauderdale's beaches are its best and cheapest attractions. Can't-miss stretches of sand include Fort Lauderdale Beach  and  Las Olas Beach .

What to Eat

Though Fort Lauderdale's dining scene isn't as well-known as those found in other destinations, it does boast a variety of options. Everything from Italian to Argentinean to Mediterranean is served at eateries around the city, including traveler favorites like Dolce Salato Pizza & Gelato , Premiere Cafe & Bar and Mini Pita . For more upscale ethnic meals, visitors suggest dining at the Italian-inspired La Dolce Vita and the Spanish-influenced Café Seville .

Most restaurants in Fort Lauderdale specialize in casual American fare and dishes made with fresh, local seafood. Popular American joints include Laspadas Original Hoagies and Gilbert's 17th Street Grill , while Wild Sea Oyster Bar & Grille and OCEAN2000 feature Florida staples such as grouper, wahoo, mahimahi, spiny lobster and conch.

A few breweries are also available in the area for those keen on sipping a cold one. The German-style Khoffner Brewery is a great option for beer lovers browsing Las Olas Boulevard 's shops and restaurants, which sit only 2 miles south. Meanwhile, LauderAle 's location between Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport makes it convenient for travelers waiting on a cruise or flight.

Having (mostly) moved past the days of spring break debauchery, Fort Lauderdale is a relatively safe place to visit. But you still shouldn't let your guard down. Vehicle burglary is quite common, so make sure to lock your car doors and close the windows all the way. Don't leave any valuables in your car, including laptops and cell phones; even loose change should be hidden, since instances have involved transients looking for a couple of coins.

Also, travel in groups at night, especially if you're a women and particularly during spring break. Although Fort Lauderdale isn't as popular among college kids these days, evenings can still get a little rowdy. Be on guard after dark, and avoid walking around alone. Exercise extra caution when visiting the west, northwest and southwest parts of the city.

If you're at the beach, heed any warnings about the water and swim near an on-duty lifeguard.

Getting Around Fort Lauderdale

The best way to get around Fort Lauderdale is by car. Despite an extensive network of waterways, the roads are still faster. In fact, the canals can be confusing. As you travel closer toward the coast, streets may curve or simply end at waterways. Away from the Atlantic, much of the city adheres to a grid. Tired of driving? Take a water taxi to your next downtown destination. And if not by land or by sea, then arrive in Fort Lauderdale by air. Making the city easily accessible, the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is just a 5-mile drive south of downtown Fort Lauderdale and welcomes many commercial airlines. You can also fly into Miami International Airport (MIA), located about 30 miles south of downtown Fort Lauderdale, or Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), approximately 45 miles north of Fort Lauderdale. Rental cars are available at all three airports.

At Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, visitors have access to public facilities like grills, outdoor showers and picnic tables.

One Day in Fort Lauderdale Itinerary – How to Spend a Perfect Day in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Endless boating canals, miles of sandy beaches, palms, yachts, luxury hotels, country clubs, bright, green, freshly mowed public parks, shops, restaurants, and oh so many bridges – once an unbeatable spring break destination, Fort Lauderdale has grown up together with the rambunctious students who were once its most devoted visitors. While there’s still plenty of partying all over the city, it does little to crinkle Fort Lauderdale’s classy, sophisticated veneer. Embodying the very best of Florida – beautiful weather, palm trees, shopping, the best beaches in the state, and a bustling, exciting culinary scene, the “Venice of America” is a serious rival to Miami Beach, which is way more famous worldwide, in spite of being in many ways the (albeit tasty) burger to Fort Lauderdale’s delicious steak, seasoned to perfection with a brush of fundamental pleasures found in the sea and the sun and just a sprinkle of luxury.

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT FORT LAUDERDALE?

Similar to many other popular destinations in Florida, Fort Lauderdale has a subtropical rainforest climate . In simple terms, it means that Fort Lauderdale is always warm, with a median temperature of 18 ° C (65 °F) or higher throughout the year. The obvious benefit of this is the 12-month beach season . On the other hand, the city also experiences a pretty long wet season, with hot and humid summer months between May and October.

Even in early fall, the humidity often builds up, causing almost daily thunderstorms and sudden downpours. Officially, the period between June 1 and November 30 is considered to be the hurricane season. With all that in mind, the best time to visit Fort Lauderdale would be between December and May. The weather is still warm, which is great, but it also means that the city gets flooded by visitors from other parts of the country looking to escape harsh winter temperatures.

Spring brings with it some of the best festivals in Florida, such as the Fort Lauderdale Air and Sea Show, the Tortuga Music Festival, and the Las Olas Art Fair. If all you care about is the searing heat and plenty of sunshine, feel free to visit in the summer, as long as you remember to hydrate and pack plenty of high factor sunblock.

Fort Lauderdale

A FEW FACTS ABOUT FORT LAUDERDALE

The Tequesta were the first inhabitants of the area now known as Fort Lauderdale. After they were displaced by the Spaniards, the Seminole Indians were left as the only group of Native Americans in the area. Years later, during the Second Seminole War , they clashed with Major William Lauderdale , who raised a fort on the site of the current city in 1838. Frank Stranahan, a young man from Ohio, arrived in 1893 and built a house that developed into the area’s first trading post, bank, post office, and town hall.

That house still stands today, and serves as the Historic Stranahan House Museum . When Fort Lauderdale was officially incorporated as a town in 1911, it became the seat of Broward County. This resulted in a prosperous farming community. Funnily enough, while the warm, humid climate helped the area’s agriculture, only after home air-conditioning became commonly available (after WWII) did Fort Lauderdale and its suburbs experience significant growth.

In the 60s, Fort Lauderdale became the Spring Break capital. This was primarily thanks to the success of the hit 1960 film “Where the Boys Are”.

Today, Fort Lauderdale is known as the Venice of America due to its beautiful beaches, extravagant waterfront lifestyle, and, most importantly, 300 miles of inland canals . The city’s 100 marinas, 50,000 registered yachts, and beautiful, immaculate beaches attract the country’s rich and famous. Marilyn Manson, Lee Majors, David Cassidy, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson live in the area.

Fort Lauderdale

ONE DAY IN FORT LAUDERDALE ITINERARY

Follow this guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do on your one day in Fort Lauderdale.

Start Your Day at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

An oasis of green between the urban city center and the ocean, the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is a wonderful retreat in the heart of the city. Spending a couple of hours at the park is one of the best free things to do in Fort Lauderdale. Additionally, there are many available activities and opt-in tours of the park, including a guided Segway or bicycle tour.

The park opens at 8 , so you can get there early to avoid the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet that you may come to miss later in the day. It was donated to the Florida Board of Forestry and Parks by an influential attorney from Chicago, which is why this little slice of heaven still carries his name. You can admire the freshwater lagoon, go fishing, hiking, swimming, canoeing, or wildlife viewing (keep an eye out for gopher tortoises, mash rabbits, opossums, tortoises, etc.).

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Visit the Bonnet House

You can also tour Hugh Taylor Birch’s former home . It is a gorgeous Art-Deco style mansion with exhibits about his life, but also about ecology, ecosystems, and the history of the region. The house is located south of the park across Sunrise Boulevard. You can pay for a guided tour, which is well worth it for the wealth of information the guides can provide. This majestic home and plantation is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Among other things, the place where the house is located contains a treasure trove of archeological evidence dating back to 2,000 BC. The location is also the site of the first contact between the Spanish settlers and the local Native American population, which was later eradicated due to diseases and displacement.

Bonnet House

Hit the Fort Lauderdale Beach

Not that there aren’t any indoor activities in Fort Lauderdale, but you can’t exactly expect to come to the Sunshine State and stay cooped up inside with the air-conditioning blasting on max. No, you’ll want to hit the beach. The closest beach and one of the most beautiful beaches in the city is the Fort Lauderdale Beach . Just head to the oceanfront and look around. Everywhere you look, it’s all Fort Lauderdale Beach – more than seven miles of golden sand and turquoise ocean. It is a very popular destination with the recognizable Wave Wall and the long brick-paved promenade lined with bars, restaurants, outdoor cafés, nightclubs, and fancy shops.

If you are looking for things to do in Fort Lauderdale with kids, the beach is your answer. Water sports , spas, bike rentals, a Fun Center and a Pirate Center, the Fort Lauderdale Beach has it all, not to mention museums and art galleries. But do mind the time because this one day in Fort Lauderdale is just starting!

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Also Check out the Las Olas Beach, Plus Lunch

Admittedly, keeping track of Fort Lauderdale beaches can be quite challenging for a first-time visitor. Basically, this is how it works. You’ve got the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park and the Bonnet House slightly to the south. The Fort Lauderdale Beach is right there near the Bonnet House and the Las Olas Beach is further to the south. The whole neighborhood is called Central Beach . It takes about 20 minutes to reach the Las Olas Beach on foot from the Bonnet House.

If you feel like it, go for a walk along the beach and take in the sights, including luxurious resorts and gorgeous condominium complexes. If you want to grab a bite to eat, the nearby Coconuts Fort Lauderdale stands out as an excellent choice. You can enjoy some great seafood dishes and watch the yachts cruise by as you relax on the spacious outdoor terrace. The food options include an excellent seafood platter, phenomenal oysters , tasty coconut shrimp, succulent lobster roll, and many others.

If you’re looking for things to do in Fort Lauderdale with kids, take them to Coconuts for a great meal and then let them watch as the waiters feed the fish scraps. If you’re having trouble finding the restaurant, it is located right by the International Swimming Hall of Fame Museum.

Explore the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale

Speaking of museums, the early afternoon after lunch might be a good time to escape the searing heat and check out a couple of indoor activities in Fort Lauderdale. In terms of museums, the aforementioned International Swimming Hall of Fame Museum is certainly an option for fans of the sport who are interested in seeing Olympic medals and other memorabilia on display.

The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale near the Tarpon River is a considerably more popular choice, with more than 6,000 works of art showcasing the visual history of human civilization. The modernist building where the museum is situated is an architectural achievement in its own right, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. Notable exhibitions include the impressive William Glackens collection, the stunning ceramic works by Pablo Picasso , and the remarkable section dedicated to Native American, African, and Oceanic Tribal Arts.

Discover the Museum of Discovery and Science

Less than half a mile away, across the street from Esplanade Park in front of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, you can check out the Museum of Discovery and Science , whose exciting interactive exhibits have made touring this museum one of the best things to do in Fort Lauderdale with kids. Highlights include the Storm Center, the gigantic megalodon, the mammoths, the realistic FA-18 cockpit simulators , the marvelous IMAX 3D Theater (largest in Florida), and many others.

To get to the last two museums, grab an Uber/taxi from Las Olas Beach or catch bus number 11 from Las Olas Beach/Birch Road. The bus ride takes under 20 minutes for the 17 stops. Get off at Andrews Avenue/2 nd Street.

Fort Lauderdale's Museum of Discovery and Science

Have Some Fun at the Xtreme Action Park

In case you don’t feel like visiting both museums, pick one that suits your interests and spend some extra time there. When it comes to other fun things to do in Fort Lauderdale, nothing beats the Xtreme Action Park. You can get there in under 15 minutes by car or half an hour by bus (number 14 from Central Terminal to Powerline R/NW 51 P, total 27 stops).

With a recently opened virtual reality entertainment center, a half-mile go-kart track , escape rooms, and bowling lanes plus a bar, Xtreme Action Park’s got a little bit of something for everyone. Best of all, the action park is open until 10 PM , which lets you spend some extra time at the beach or one of the museums without having to worry about making it there on time.

Head Back Downtown for Dinner

There are a couple of fast food joints near the Xtreme Action Park if you get hungry from all the adrenaline and excitement. If you’d like to sit down for a proper dinner, check out TacoCraft Taqueria & Tequila Bar, located back on 2 nd street not far from the Museum of Discovery and Science. TacoCraft serves excellent Mexican street food with a modern twist, prepared using local, seasonal ingredients. The exciting graffiti art and painted murals give the restaurant a distinct urban feel, in line with its location in the heart of Fort Lauderdale’s bustling downtown culinary scene.

Fort Lauderdale Downtown

Get Ready for a Night on the Town

There are a couple of tacky nightclubs literally next door to TacoCraft Taqueria & Tequila Bar, so you may not want to barge in through the first door with a shiny sign hanging over it. As TacoCraft’s very name suggests, you can start your night out there with a couple of tequilas or margaritas before you venture out in search or other things to do in Fort Lauderdale after dark.

If live music, a large beer selection, and a large outdoor patio sound like something you would appreciate, you can visit Poorhouse , located across the street. An authentic, gritty rock bar frequented by locals and the generally unpretentious, chill crowd, this bar has become a real Fort Lauderdale landmark.

DAY TRIPS FROM FORT LAUDERDALE

One of the many advantages of staying in Fort Lauderdale are the numerous day trips and organized tours to other popular destinations and landmarks within the general area. Miami is literally a stone’s throw away, and you could realistically go to Orlando and visit one of the famous amusement parks there. However, there a couple of day trips that really stand out among the rest.

A day trip to the Florida Everglades is one of them, with exciting airboat tours and alligator shows to boot. From Fort Lauderdale, you can easily reach Key West , the iconic island city and the southernmost point in Florida. And if that’s not enough, you can go for broke and head for the Bahamas – amazingly, also in a day. To learn more about these day trips from Fort Lauderdale, consult this article.

EXTRA TIPS FOR VISITING FORT LAUDERDALE

While the average temperature in Fort Lauderdale is very warm (around 75 degrees Fahrenheit), it can still occasionally get quite cold, especially after heavy rains. Always pack a coat and a change of clothes for any type of weather , doubly so if you’re visiting during the winter months.

When it comes to the beach, remember that Fort Lauderdale is facing the Atlantic Ocean, so don’t venture out too far if you’re not a good swimmer and remember that there are all kinds of critters in the water, including jellyfish and needlefish. The bigger threat, however, is the powerful sunshine – and you will need plenty of sunblock to keep your skin from burning. It’s best to avoid the sun in the middle of the day and always seek out shade.  If you have any other propositions for this One Day in Fort Lauderdale Itinerary, feel free to share them in the comments below!

Located along the southeastern coast of Florida, Fort Lauderdale makes for a fun weekend trip. Nicknamed the “Venice of America,” because of its many waterways, Fort Lauderdale boasts year-round sunny weather, fun watersports, and beautiful beaches.

Planning a trip can be a hassle, especially if you have only a few days. But don’t worry, I got you covered. Keep reading to find out how to make the most out of your weekend trip to Fort Lauderdale, where to eat, and what hotels to stay at. In my opinion, it’s the best 3-day Fort Lauderdale itinerary out there 🙂

How do I get to Fort Lauderdale?

The greater Fort Lauderdale area is served by the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which has hundreds of daily flights to many destinations in the United States, Canada, and South and Central America.

Will you need a car in Fort Lauderdale?

If you are going to spend your weekend relaxing in one of the beachfront hotels in Fort Lauderdale, check out some restaurants and enjoy the beach or go paddle boarding, scuba diving, or snorkeling, you don’t need a car in Fort Lauderdale.

You can get an Uber from Fort Lauderdale to your hotel, and explore the Fort Lauderdale Promenade on foot.

However, if you want to explore some of the best beaches in Fort Lauderdale like Dania Beach, Lauderdale by the Sea, Pompano Beach, or go further to Delray Beach, you will need a car.  For this 3-day itinerary, I definitely recommend renting a car! DiscoverCars has some of the best deals!

Fort Lauderdale has an extensive public transportation system, including the Sun Trolley and Broward County Transit. Consider using these options to get around the city easily and cost-effectively, if you don’t have a car rental.

What is the best time to visit Fort Lauderdale?

birds eye view of fort lauderdale during weekend trip

The best time to visit Fort Lauderdale is during the shoulder seasons. It’s a perfect time to avoid crowds and high prices and enjoy the best of the city without having to pay premium rates for accommodations, food, and transportation.

November is a great time to visit Fort Lauderdale. This is the first month after the hurricane season in Florida when the weather is sunny and mild, but the busy season hasn’t arrived yet.

Likewise, May is a good month for your trip to Fort Lauderdale – the spring break season is over and the city is transitioning into the slow season, so you can take advantage of more favorable prices and great weather before it starts getting hot.

Weather in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale has a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by warm temperatures and high humidity throughout much of the year. The city experiences distinct wet and dry seasons:

  • Wet Season (Summer): The wet season in Fort Lauderdale typically lasts from May to October. During this period, you can expect hot and humid weather with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Rainfall is more common in the afternoon and evenings, while mornings are often sunny and warm.
  • Dry Season (Winter): The dry season lasts from November to April. This is the most popular time for tourists to visit Fort Lauderdale, as the weather is generally drier and more pleasant. Temperatures are still warm, but the humidity is lower compared to the wet season.

Where should I stay in Fort Lauderdale?

The most popular and arguably best place to stay in Fort Lauderdale is the beach area aka Fort Lauderdale Boulevard where you can find some of the best beachfront resorts like Ocean B , Westin , Maren, and Ritz Carlton . However, it’s also one of the most expensive options , which will cost hundreds of dollars and go over a thousand dollars for a night at one of the suites.

This is not ideal if you are a budget or even mid-budget traveler, and are not ready to shell out thousands of dollars on your weekend.

Here’s a little secret: You can find great budget hotels just a few blocks behind major resorts along the beach in Fort Lauderdale . These small hotels offer basic amenities like parking, a swimming pool, and Wi-Fi, and make a perfect stay if you are not looking to spend a ton of time in your hotel and plan to explore the area.

For example, Tranquilo is a great boutique hotel within walking distance from Fort Lauderdale Beach that offers inexpensive prices and has an outdoor swimming pool. Although it doesn’t have the amenities of a big resort, it has just enough to enjoy a comfortable stay with nice spacious rooms.

Another alternative is to book one of the hotels near the airport in Fort Lauderdale. This is a more suitable option for those travelers who have a car because you will be a few miles away from the beach , as well as stores and restaurants.

Dania Beach , a small town near Fort Lauderdale Airport is home to many budget hotels like Wyndham, where you can save a good chunk of money if you plan to spend a weekend in Fort Lauderdale.

Finally, you can also stay in downtown Fort Lauderdale which will put you close to Las Olas, the most happening street in Fort Lauderdale where you can find some of the best restaurants in town like YOLO, Rocco’s Tacos, and Bombay Darbar.

Fort Lauderdale Hotel Recommendations:

  • Budget-friendly option: Hotel Tranquilo
  • Mid-range option: Premiere Hotel
  • Luxury option: Ritz Carlton Fort Lauderdale
  • Dog-friendly stay: The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort

3-Day Fort Lauderdale Weekend Itinerary

Day 1 in fort lauderdale.

fort lauderdale trip

Start your weekend trip with an adventurous morning snorkel . You can book a guided tour , or rent some gear and head to one of the popular snorkel spots. The Vista Park Reef is a local’s favorite with the coral reef located just 1,000 feet from shore. Pompano Beach and Hollywood North Beach Park both offer great snorkeling sites as well!

Grab a delicious meal at one of Fort Lauderdale’s beachfront restaurants. If you are in the mood for some Mexican food, head to Lona Cocina or if you’d prefer a delicious brunch head to Nanou , a French bakery just a few blocks from Fort Lauderdale Promenade

After enjoying your meal, drive to Hugh Taylor Birch State Park , a tropical oasis in the middle of Fort Lauderdale’s urban jungle. Here, you can enjoy kayaking, wildlife watching, and picnicking. The park also has several easy hiking trails and a 2-mile loop, perfect for jogging, rollerblading, and walking.

It’s also a great place to avoid tourist crowds, especially during the off-season, when the place is frequented mostly by locals.

End your first day in Fort Lauderdale with a fancy dinner in Las Olas . You’ll find a good variety of restaurants that offer different cuisines from Cuban to Italian and Japanese to classic American dishes.

Tip! Be sure to check out the Fort Lauderdale sightseeing pass before booking any activities to see if you are able to save money!

Day 2 in Fort Lauderdale:

fort lauderdale trip

Book a tour to explore Everglades National Park which covers a large portion of southern Florida, stretching from Lake Okeechobee in the north to Florida Bay in the south.

The Everglades is known for its rich biodiversity including alligators, American crocodiles, manatees, Florida panthers, and a variety of bird species. It is considered a globally significant ecosystem and has been designated as both a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve.

You can book an exciting airboat or kayaking tour of the Everglades online through GetYourGuide or with one of the local tour companies.

By the time you get back from the park, it’s going to be early afternoon. Time to grab lunch in Las Olas or along Fort Lauderdale Boulevard and continue your day.

For some culture, head to NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale which features a diverse collection of artwork, including contemporary and modern art, as well as artworks by artists from the Caribbean and Latin America.

Check out local bars and restaurants at the Fort Lauderdale Promenade. I recommend heading to McSorley’s, an Irish pub that has great beer and food, and one of the best rooftops in Fort Lauderdale Beach.

After dinner, you can head to the Elbo Room , a longtime staple of the Fort Lauderdale bar scene that serves only alcohol and is well known for its social scene.

Rise and shine! Your third day in Fort Lauderdale is an exciting one! In the morning, you can book a parasailing session along the Florida coastline if the weather provides the right conditions, or do some kayaking or paddle boarding if the water is calm enough.

If you have a car rental and want to explore Florida beyond Fort Lauderdale, drive up or down the coast to visit places like Dania Beach, Hollywood, Lauderdale by the Sea, or Pompano Beach. Dania Beach , in particular, makes a great stop thanks to its gorgeous pier where you can watch local fishermen.

Depending on where you decide to go during the afternoon, you can finish your day with a delicious dinner along the beach or in one of the restaurants in Fort Lauderdale.

15 Best Day Trips from Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is a sunny, popular destination that’s located on the southeastern coastline of Florida.

Looking out over the beautiful waters of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s a firm favorite year-round holiday city, offering not only incredible beaches but a vibrant nightlife, culinary scene, and excellent day trip opportunities.

Fort Lauderdale is ideally situated; it’s close to the eclectic city life of fabulous Miami, while to the south and north, stretching for mile upon mile, are glorious beaches and coastal communities just waiting to be explored.

The city is within easy reach of the diverse and wild Everglades National Park – home to one of the world’s most unique ecosystems – while on the opposing coastline of the Florida Peninsula, the many beautiful national parks and beaches surrounding Fort Myers are just a day trip away.

There are many epic opportunities for day trips from Fort Lauderdale, here are the best of them:

Miami

The center of Miami is just a short 30-minute drive away to the south of Fort Lauderdale and it’s a must-visit destination for anyone staying in the region.

It’s a huge place, and you could spend more than just a day exploring every neighborhood and quirk that the city has to offer.

First-time visitors should start by heading to the famous Downtown area.

This is where life in Miami happens – where restaurants, bars, and shopping malls are found and business is conducted.

There are museums to visit and huge parks to walk around.

You will quickly realize that Miami is much more than just this area.

Head on down to Little Havana for a colorful taste of the Cuban life that has entrenched itself in the sunny shores of the city, before heading to the old and historic Coconut Grove area to experience a different side of life here too.

2. Miami Beach

South Beach, Miami Beach. Florida

Miami Beach is one of the world’s most iconic beaches.

Although it shares the same name as the city, it is, in fact, a separate area and worth a full day trip of its own from Fort Lauderdale.

Miami Beach is found on a set off offshore barrier islands, separated from the rest of Miami by the Biscayne Bay but connected by bridges.

This is the Miami that you are probably picturing when you imagine the city because this is where the long beaches, lavish hotels, and beautiful boulevards are found.

This is where you can mix with the rich and famous on the boardwalks, spend the day relaxing on the white sands or enjoying fine dining and cocktails in the evening with a sea view to match the price.

3. Biscayne Bay

Biscayne Bay

Biscayne Bay is found south of Miami.

It’s a large area of water that forms a sheltered harbor and natural beauty abounds.

The northern area is fringed by the city – a bustling place where cruise ships call in and boats dock, but the southern area is a beautiful protected national park.

The Biscayne National Park is home to clear waters and barrier reefs.

This is where the Florida Keys begins; much of the national park is underwater, making this an ideal day trip for those looking to snorkel or dive.

Many companies also run glass-bottom boat tours out into the marine reserves, giving you the chance to see this colorful and diverse underwater world without getting wet.

4. The Florida Keys

Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are one of the most dramatic sights in the state.

This collection of coral reefs and islands is strung out from the southern tip of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico.

They are a truly epic natural phenomenon, with beautiful white sand beaches, tropical climes and snorkeling opportunities around every turn.

The islands are connected by roads and bridges – themselves an incredible feat of engineering.

There are many different spots to visit, with Key Largo being the closest island in the Florida Keys to Fort Lauderdale, and Key West one of the best known but most distant.

Halfway along the chain you can find Islamorada – a stunning place to visit.

You might find that you keep returning to the Florida Keys until you’ve witnessed every single island and atoll.

5. The Everglades

Everglades National Park

The Everglades are one of the world’s most unique and diverse ecosystems.

Found to the south of Fort Lauderdale, this is one part of Florida that it would be a crime to ignore when visiting the state.

The Everglades are a vast area of wilderness, mangroves, and wetlands, whose importance is recognized by its listing as a UNESCO site.

Tour operators run day trips down to the Everglades National Park, where you can experience this ecosystem in true Floridian fashion by cruising the extensive waterways on the iconic airboats.

This is alligator country, so be ready to spot these fearsome creatures in their natural habitat, as well as a huge variety of other wildlife in this special protected area.

6. Lake Okeechobee

Lake Okeechobee

Although not as well known or as visited as the Everglades to the south, Lake Okeechobee is just as diverse and beautiful.

Lying to the north-west of Fort Lauderdale, this freshwater lake is absolutely massive – it would be impossible to see the entirety of it in a day.

The lake is home to a huge ecosystem and there are many opportunities here for wildlife watching, hiking, and boating on the lake itself.

7. The Flamingo Gardens

The Flamingo Gardens

The Flamingo Gardens is one of Fort Lauderdale’s much-loved attractions.

Found just outside the city, it makes for a casual day trip inland away from the coast.

The Flamingo Gardens are an outstanding botanic garden, home to thousands of species of plants and trees, many of which are unique to the local region.

It’s a great place to learn about the huge diversity of flora found in Florida.

Available tour : Flamingo Garden VIP Tour

8. Big Cypress National Preserve

Big Cypress National Preserve

To the southwest of Fort Lauderdale, Big Cypress National Preserve is a huge area of swampy wetland that’s full of wildlife.

The Visitor Centre is the place to start your trip; you can learn about the natural area and the Seminole Indian Tribe who still call this land home.

There are boardwalks to explore and it’s possible to take kayaks through the dense mangrove system in search of alligators and other animals that live here.

9. Delray Beach

Delray Beach

Just a half hour drive to the north of Fort Lauderdale is Delray Beach.

As well as being home to a pristine beach – complete with white sands and bracing Atlantic Ocean views – Delray is well known as an artistic haven.

The small town is full of art galleries, public installations, and displays, as well as interesting cultural exhibits such as a Japanese tea house.

10. West Palm Beach

West Palm Beach, Florida

Further north along the coast from Fort Lauderdale lies West Palm Beach.

As well as being the site of some beautiful stretches of coastline and wonderful beaches, West Palm Beach, like Delray Beach, is fast becoming a cultural center too, with some intriguing art galleries and an ever-growing culinary scene to be experienced.

11. Fort Myers

Fort Myers

Over on the eastern peninsula, looking out over the Gulf of Mexico, Fort Myers is a two-hour drive from Fort Lauderdale.

This coastal city is like a laidback, smaller version of Miami and it makes for a mellow, slow-paced day trip.

There are glorious beaches and great bars and restaurants overlooking the warm waters of the gulf.

Naples Pier, Florida

Naples is also found overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, not far from Fort Myers, and is known for its pristine beaches.

These are some of the most highly-regarded stretches of white sand in the United States and it’s easy to spend all day strolling along the shore or relaxing on the coast.

Visit the long Naples Pier too, which is found in the town itself.

13. 10,000 Islands

10,000 Islands

Off the southwest coast is one of Florida’s most incredible destinations – the 10,000 Islands.

This huge collection of islands is wild and rugged; full of wildlife and surrounded by marine life.

Much of the area is protected and the region makes for an excellent day’s exploration, especially if you love snorkeling.

14. Orlando

Orlando

Although it’s a long drive north, a day trip to Orlando is very much possible – and very much worthwhile too.

The city itself is a pleasant and enjoyable place to spend the day; however, most people associate Orlando with theme parks because the surrounding area is packed full of them.

Some of the most famous in the world can be visited here, from Universal Studios to Disney World.

These parks make for an adventurous and thrilling excursion from Fort Lauderdale.

15. Bahamas Day Trip

Freeport, Grand Bahama

Not many visitors realize this, but Fort Lauderdale is actually just a two-hour speedboat journey away from the Bahamas.

Frequent fast ferries are arranged by tour companies to whisk travelers away across the Atlantic Ocean to the nearby city of Freeport – the largest city on Grand Bahama.

It’s a great way to experience island life and catch a glimpse of the Caribbean lifestyle that’s playing out just across the waves.

It’s possible to visit the much loved Pig Beach, where a resident population of friendly pigs can be seen playing in the shallow, clear waters off the island.

Remember, though, you will need a passport, so don’t forget this vital document if you want to make the trip.

Missing fisherman's paddle board found nearly a dozen miles offshore between Miami, Fort Lauderdale

By John MacLauchlan

Updated on: June 27, 2024 / 6:52 PM EDT / CBS Miami

MIAMI  - A paddleboard and a dry bag belonging to a missing fisherman were found almost a dozen miles offshore, the U.S. Coast Guard said this Wednesday.

Luciano Mercenari , 29, a skilled paddle boarder and fisherman left his home in the Cape Florida neighborhood of Key Biscayne around 5:15 p.m. on Monday.

"He was supposed to go to Stiltsville and he usually does these trips in about two hours and comes back before sundown. He has not shown up so we have been looking for him yesterday and today, all over, by sea, by air, and with paddle boards around the island. We are hoping we will find him," said family friend Gretel Capriles on Tuesday.

Multiple agencies including the Coast Guard, Miami-Dade Police, and Florida Fish and Wildlife are taking part in  the search .

On Wednesday morning, just after 8 a.m., the  U.S. Coast Guard posted on X, formerly Twitter

, that "a good Samaritan located a paddleboard and dry bag belonging to the overdue paddleboarder 8-11 miles offshore between Miami and Fort Lauderdale."

Capriles said Mercenari had made the trip to Stiltsville before and never had a problem.

"He is an amazing person and a fisherman. He also won a rowing championship and was a national champ. His nickname was LUC for light. He would Light up everyone around him," she said.

The Coast Guard said the search for Mercenari continues.
