The BR75 Adventure Camper Turns the Toyota Hilux Into a Luxury Roving Basecamp

By: Tim Huber Published: Feb 08, 2023

Headquartered out of Tokyo, Direct Cars is a Japanese company that specializes in converting existing vans and trucks into custom-designed go-anywhere campers . And the latest donor vehicle to be bestowed with Direct Cars’ signature treatment is Toyota’s immensely popular Hilux pickup.

Based on the dual-cab version of the mid-sized pickup , this camper — known as the BR75 — is being offered in two variants; the Hilux Z-based BR75-G; and the more high-end Hilux GR Sport-based BR75-Z. Accessible via two external doors as well as through the cabin of the truck, the interior of the BR75 features a pop-up roof, ample storage space thanks to a myriad of cabinets and hanging shelves, dirt and scratch-resistant flooring, rugged textile upholstery, an onboard home air conditioner, and a bench seat and table that transform into a full-sized bed. There’s also a second pull-down bed that’s big enough to comfortably sleep two kids. Other noteworthy elements include external power outlets, a touchscreen control panel, and a massive rear entrance hatch.

What’s more, on top of an 85-liter water tank, a 20-liter clean water tank, and a 45-liter drain tank, the interior of the camper also boasts a separate bathroom that comes loaded with a waterproof floor, a mirror, a slide-out counter table, a full-fledged sink, modern fixtures, and doors that allow it to be accessed from inside or outside the camper. Feeding the rig’s 200Ah secondary battery is a set of 200W roof-mounted solar panels. The Z-spec also gains a few additional upgrades over the BR75-G, such as a side-mounted pull-out awning and an additional window on its rear hatch. To bring the camper to life, the team at Direct Cars also had to remove the donor truck’s bed in order to install the camper shell. Rather than tossing out the bed after plucking it from the truck, the team has instead repurposed it into an off-road trailer that’s now towed behind the camper.

Available for order now, the Direct Cars BR75 Toyota Hilux Adventure Camper starts at ¥10,980,000 (~ $83,600) Toyota Hilux Z BR75-G model while the top-of-the-line GR-Sport Hilum-based BR75-Z model is priced at ¥12,450,000 (~ $94,800).

Toyota Hilux 4×4 Expedition Camper

If you’re looking for the ultimate camping vehicle that can go almost anywhere then look no further. Our Toyota Hilux 4×4 Expedition Camper changes the game completely when it comes to the camping experience. Not only does it have pretty much everything you could ever need when heading into the great outdoors, it can also comfortably fit the whole family! Our Expedition camper isn’t just great for families, it’s also the perfect size for groups of friends looking to have the adventure of a lifetime.

So what exactly makes it an Expedition Camper? What’s that incredible looking camper unit on the back of the car? That is the Crawler camping unit. The Crawler is designed to be one of the most compact yet versatile camping units available on the global market. What better fit for a Toyota Hilux?

van tour hilux 4x4

While the Crawler appears relatively small, snugly fitting on the back of the Hilux, don’t let that fool you. Both the roof and one side of the unit fold out, expanding the space of the camper outwards and upwards, simultaneously providing more headroom and a comfortable interior sleeping space for two adults and a child.

During the day this space can be converted into a comfortable lounge where you can relax, read a book, or get some work done on your laptop (which can be charged from power outlets). The Crawler opens to expose a fully equipped outdoor kitchen, with an extraordinarily spacious fridge, a dual burner gas stove, and a tap with running water (attached to a 110L water tank). It seriously has everything you need!

To ensure your trip is still enjoyable in any weather, our Expedition Camper is equipped with a 270 degree awning which provides shelter from both the sun and rain. The cabin of the camper can also be heated thanks to a standalone diesel heater. Longer trips are no longer a smelly experience, either, as the Crawler is equipped with a shower and a shower tent! If you’re looking to bring along extra people, don’t fret – with the rooftop tent you can sleep another two adults!

The Perfect Off-Road Camper: Toyota Hilux Expedition V1

Off-road camper vans are great aren’t they? Just looking at them makes you want to roll out of your armchair, pack your bags , and hit the road to explore the great vastness of our world’s outdoors. This is true especially when they happen to look like Toyota Hilux Expedition V1, a custom off-road camper built for adventure photographer Stefan Forster .

Forster ’s photographs are published by the world’s most renowned nature and landscape photography magazines. To capture his unique subjects/objects he’s hiking for weeks through world’s most isolated areas. Sometimes he uses a kayak to discover the coast of Greenland, the alligator swamps in the southern U.S. or the Rock Islands of Palau.

True landscape photography is tough and exhausting so the Siwss photographer decided to make his life easier by building an epic camper truck based off a Toyota Hilux. Dubbed the Expedition V1 and nicknamed, Úlfur (Icelandic for “wolf”) this is one intense 4×4 off-road capable vehicle.

Over the course of a year and with the help of Geocar , Hurter Offroad , and Arctic Trucks Iceland , this Hilux made the transition from ordinary pickup to extraordinary back country vehicle.

It’s powered by a 3.0L 225hp diesel engine and boasts a custom-made cabin complete with all the amenities Stefan and fellow travelers could want. Additionally, the Expedition also hosts a slew of off-road features outfitted for even the harshest of conditions. We’re talking a TJM snorkel, a WARN cable, HELLA lights, front and rear differential locks, underbelly protection, and an internal radio control unit among many others.

Forster ’s Toyota Hilux Expedition V1 is the proof that not all four-wheeling is about blasting through a waist-deep mud bog. Overlanding is about the adventure of the journey—long-distance four-wheeling to remote parts of the country (or world).

toyota hilux gets upgraded as 4WD camper with queen-sized bed and pull-out breakfast bar

Redsands campers’ mobile vehicle, the wanderer .

RedSands Campers transforms the Toyota Hilux D4D into a two-person 4WD camper and mobile lodging, complete with a queen-sized bed inside the converted pickup truck and a pull-out breakfast bar and dinner table. Named “The Wanderer,” the truck is also equipped with solar panels to power up devices and electronics in the 4WD camper for travelers. RedSands Campers’ new addition to its growing list of vehicles may be more suitable for exploring Australia all year round, as the Toyota Hilux camper is also equipped with air conditioning to fend off the heat.

Toyota Hilux with built-in kitchen

In addition to both indoor and outdoor seating, the queen-sized bed inside The Wanderer can accommodate two travelers worn out from their excursions and traveling around cities. RedSands Campers says that its Toyota Hilux 4WD camper allows nomads to enjoy their meals inside using the pull-out table and outside with its built-in breakfast bar. This feature keeps on running since the camper is furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, allowing the wanderers the freedom to cook their own meals wherever they are.

Fully equipped camper for off-road touring

The upgraded Toyota Hilux 4WD camper also comes with awnings to shield the travelers from extreme heat, basic bathroom necessities including towels and a portable camp shower, a set of LED lighting to illuminate the camper at night, and some camp chairs for guests. RedSands Campers adds a portable two-burner stove, sink, draining board, and dishwashing essentials to its built-in kitchen to wrap up the camping experience, and the presence of a fire extinguisher amps up the safety measures in case of flame and smoke emergencies on the road.

For specs buffs, RedSands Campers’ Toyota Hilux 4WD camper is a high and low-range four-wheel drive with automatic transmission. It has a 142-liter fuel tank capacity and consumes 12 to 14 liters per 100 kilometers. Power steering, Bluetooth audio, and USB charging points are also included, along with a step ladder and a first aid kit. The company keeps off-road touring in mind when transforming the Toyota Hilux into a 4WD camper and says that it has already opened its order pool. As of publishing the story, RedSands Campers is set to deliver the first batches of The Wanderer in April 2024.

Keep your eyes open for this one-of-a-kind custom Hilux camper, it will be touring America’s back roads in 2019.

toyota hilux expedition v1

What’s the best thing you ever saved up to buy yourself? A house? A new car? A long vacation?

Professional photographer  Stefan Forster wanted all three. And next week, he’ll have them in one gorgeous, rough-and-tumble package. It’s called Úlfur (Icelandic for “wolf”), a fully modified and customized Toyota Hilux Expedition V1 camper.

For U.S. and Canadian readers, it’s worth noting you won’t see a Hilux very often. While it can be permitted to travel through these countries, it’s not legal to import, and thus very uncommon in North America.

mountain shot toyota hilux expedition v1

“After years of savings, I was able to fulfill a dream,” Forster wrote on his blog . Next week, it will finally be ready. And he plans to break it in on the harshest terrains the U.S. and Canada have to offer.

“We will travel from Halifax through the whole U.S., Canada, to Alaska in 2019,” Forster told us. “Me, my wife, Iris, and my boy, Simon.”

Along the way, Forster will be hard at work doing what he does best: Rustic landscape photography.

toyota hilux expedition v1

It’s built on a 2015 Hilux chassis, which Forster chose for two reasons. One, it’s among the most ubiquitous trucks on the globe and therefore serviceable almost anywhere. And two, it carries a minimal amount of electronic doo-dads. That’s a major selling point for backcountry overlanders in an age of increasingly complex technological integration.

German off-road specialist  Hurter Off-Road  handled all the automotive modifications to the Hilux itself. It boosted the 3.0L diesel engine to kick out 225 horsepower.

hilux expedition v1 fording river

The stance was widened, fenders bumped out, and underbody skid plates installed. There’s a snorkel for fording water and two fuel tanks — one front, one rear — hold about 60 gallons of diesel. A WARN winch up front means it can get out of most trouble it encounters.

toyota hilux expedition v1

After-market racks up front hold additional headlights. In total, according to Forster’s blog, up to 38,000 lumens will rend the night on full blast.

Hilux Camper

toyota hilux expedition v1

Geocar handled the camper add-on. There’s a kitchen with a two-burner gas stove, refrigerator/freezer, hot shower, and toilet. It seats five adults in camp mode, and with fold out benches sleeps two adults and two children.

toyota hilux expedition v1

The camper uses a 16 sq.-ft. solar panel up top for power. Plus, its aerodynamic shape combined with a fully loaded weight of 880 lbs. means it still averages about 19 mpg.

toyota hilux expedition v1

According to Forster, the cabin’s 3cm-thick insulation throughout make it comfortable down to -40 Centigrade.

That should come in handy during his 2019 trip through the U.S. and Canada up to Alaska. If you see him, wave. Odds are, there won’t be anyone else around.

10 Reasons Why The Toyota Hilux Is Perfect For Camper Conversions

The Toyota Hilux is a popular pickup truck and easy to maintain, making it the ideal candidate for a camper van project.

The Toyota Hilux is already established as being one of the world's greatest workhorses. It's durable, simple, practical, and famously indestructible. For over fifty years, the Hilux has been a fabulous companion for people all over the world, but what about camping?

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing trend of camper conversions on vehicles has taken place, since it was an effective method of traveling without any of the tricky restriction issues. Because Toyota doesn't make RV campers from the factory and hasn't done for the U.S. market since 1993, a custom Japanese import made its way to the USA about a year ago which was amazingly spacious and plush , and this got us thinking: if you were to hack it yourself, why is the Hilux the perfect platform for such a purpose?

Here are 10 reasons that explain just that.

RELATED: This VW ID.Buzz Is The Swiss Army Knife Of Camper Conversions

10 The Toyota Hilux Incredibly Easy To Work On

The Hilux is famously a very simple truck for all intents and purposes, from a trip to the local hardware store, or to carry a load of supplies for villages hundreds of miles away from tarmac.

Crucially, therefore, the Hilux is an easy truck to work on, should you need to make any amendments or modifications. More-or-less everything is bolt-on and bolt-off, and this makes the Hilux an ideal candidate when adapting for the purposes of camping.

RELATED: 10 Interesting Facts You Didn't Know About The Toyota Hilux

9 The Toyota Hilux Is Very Adaptable

Following on from the sheer simplicity of the Hilux, it's also an incredibly adaptable machine. You can modify the Hilux to tackle anything from dirt roads, mountainous terrain, and even the North Pole in the most extreme cases.

The adaptability of the Toyota Hilux therefore, makes it a perfect platform to install a living space on the back bed. And after all the other relevant modifications have been done, it should tackle a number of different environments that explorers will be venturing to.

8 The Modern Toyota Hilux Has Plenty Of Power

The Hilux is by no means the most powerful truck on sale. In current guise, it can be specified with a 2.8-liter diesel engine producing 204 hp. Of course, this is far less grunt than the U.S.-market Tacoma and other American pickups offer, but the Hilux's powertrains are more than adequate for shifting around a load of extra weight.

With that in mind, camper conversions are extremely heavy, and while the Hilux isn't the fastest truck on sale, it should have little problem moving the extra equipment from stop to stop.

RELATED: Why We Desperately Want The 2023 Toyota Hilux GR Sport In America

7 The Hilux Is Less Of A Barge Than Other Trucks

One particular USP of the Hilux is that it's much smaller than the average American pickup, consisting of Ford F-150s and Chevrolet Silverados. This makes the Hilux likely to be more usable when tackling narrow and challenging terrains up to your overnight camping spot.

What's more, it's lighter than the larger, American trucks, so when you do add on that extra gear, it won't end up weighing more than a medium-sized building.

6 The Hilux Isn't Too Thirsty On Fuel

One of the greater benefits of a Toyota Hilux is also fuel economy – which is a useful aspect when traveling thousands of miles on a camping road trip. In stock form, the Hilux 2.8-liter diesel will achieve over 30 mpg (EU) on the highways.

This means that with all the extra equipment added on, you won't be struggling to achieve double figures like you might be doing with a V8-powered vehicle. The Hilux is a mightily frugal truck in comparison and especially when the going gets rough and remote, having a large fuel tank and plenty of range is vital.

5 The Hilux Is Very Capable Off Road

The Toyota Hilux is famous for being sold and used all over the globe for all manner of purposes. From delivering supplies to remote villages to tackling desert environments, the Hilux is endlessly capable off-road, and this is crucial when considering a base vehicle to convert into a camper.

Often, overlanding involves a series of environments to tackle that no normal car could ever conquer. But the Toyota Hilux can do it with ease and is, no doubt, one of the most practical vehicles for the job.

4 There Are Plenty Of Toyota Hilux Models To Choose From

Because the Hilux was both durable and such a successful product for Toyota , there are naturally loads to choose from when you look in the classifieds.

The U.S. market is hindered slightly by the fact the Hilux was removed from sale in 1995, but across Mexico and anywhere else in the world, the Hilux is plentiful on the used market in a variety of guises and generations.

Hilux supply is, therefore, important when finding the perfect base for a camping conversion vehicle.

3 Parts For A Hilux Are Easy To Find

Because the Toyota Hilux is so versatile and ultimately plentiful around the world , parts aren't an issue either. From stock parts to aftermarket add-ons to enhance your Hilux for camper use, they are available and there is no doubt in finding guides on how to fit them properly.

The support for the Hilux – and other Toyota trucks – is not only useful for owners looking to modify them, but is also vital for keeping some communities around the world moving. So, you'll be in no doubt of finding the correct parts for your camper conversion.

2 The Hilux Is Famously Reliable

Crucially, because the Toyota Hilux is famously indestructible, when you're traveling landscapes in your converted Hilux camper, it isn't likely that you'll be stranded and awaiting help from a search and rescue team. Provided you don't drop one from 10,000 ft high, this is exactly why the Hilux is so unbelievably special.

As a matter of fact, if a search and rescue team were a vehicle, they would probably be a Hilux. And when you're exploring remote destinations in a number of different climates, it's refreshing to know that when you need to go back home again, the Hilux will start up and work without hesitation and be used again next year.

1 The Beds On The Hilux Are Sizable Enough

The Toyota Hilux doesn't have quite the sizable space available on an F-150 or Silverado, – which are both battling out the trending EV truck segment. However, the extra cab has a bed measuring 2315 mm in length and 1645 mm in width, so the room to work with is at least sizable enough to comfortably fit a camping conversion kit.

Lots of conversion companies manage to hack a really spacious layout with their Hilux trucks, so those looking to try it themselves will be given confidence that an extra cab with the added equipment such as a mattress, cooking section, and table, will easily fit.

Toyota Hilux review

Toyota Hilux pick-up front

Improved ride, option of a brawnier 2.8-litre engine, sense of all-conquering unstoppability

It’s still a leaf-sprung farm truck. Attempts at SUV comfort and trim only go so far

What is it?

The world’s best-selling pick-up truck… if you leave out America. Which is like saying Burger King does the most popular cow sandwich on Earth… if you forget about McDonalds. But even excepting the USA’s insatiable thirst for open-bed freedom on wheels, the Toyota Hilux is a sales phenomenon. Since 1968, Toyota’s shifted more than 18 million of these humble workhorses to everyone from farmers to freedom fighters. And now it's a Dakar Rally winner , too.

So has Toyota stuck to the recipe for this latest one?

No. Toyota has been poring over the spreadsheets, and in recent years they've made grim reading for the Hilux. Since 2012, pick-up truck sales in Europe have doubled, swept along in the torrent of clamour for all things 4x4 and SUV-ish. But while truck sales have boomed, the Toyota’s market share has been eaten into by the likes of the Ford Ranger Wildtrack and VW Amarok – trucks aimed at wooing lifestyle enthusiasts in Shepherds Bush as much as they impress actual sheep-herders in the bush. In 2021 Toyota shifted a grand total of 47,480 Hilux units in Europe, which doesn't exactly provoke the age old hot cakes analogy.

So what's changed?

Toyota’s reacted to the trend for people desiring high-spec, well-kitted pick-up trucks with powerful motorway-happy engines. There’s now the option of a 2.8-litre engine on the toppier trim levels, instead of the workaday 2.4-litre. Inside, the range toppers boast heated leather seats, an automatic gearbox and Toyota’s latest smartphone-literate touchscreen. There’s even a JBL hi-fi and LED lights.

New for 2022 are extras such as a panoramic view monitor, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and dual-zone air conditioning, while automatic service reminders, e-call and remote diagnostic functionality are standard across the board.

And what about the mechanicals?

Toyota used to place a multi-tonne load in the Hilux’s bed, then  tune the suspension. That meant a bouncy, unsettled ride when the truck was unladen. Because most lifestyle pick-up truck drivers never place more than a bottle of screenwash and a pair of trainers in the cargo bay, the latest Hilux has been tuned to ride best without so much as a bag of sand slung in the bed.

Great news… and very worrying. Not just because the Hilux is supposed to have the simplicity and longevity of Stonehenge, but because this tactic isn’t necessarily a winner. The Mercedes X-Class was long ago dropped from UK sale after its premium take on Nissan Navara underpinnings failed to convince the pick-up truck faithful. They’ll sniff out a faker in moments.

So, has the Hilux lost its way, or reinforced its position as a modern motoring icon? We’ve tested the two top-spec models: the Hilux Invincible and Invincible X, to find out if they’re worthy of the best-seller or not.

What's the verdict?

The Toyota Hilux is a predictably unpretentious machine, and its attempts to court lifestyle truck buyers have done little to alienate its core following while rounding off some of its rougher on-road manners. The most welcome upgrade is the new 2.8-litre engine, alleviating the older cars’ tardy performance particularly when fully loaded.

The cabin remains grim in areas and it’s a cumbersome beast to helm around, but if anything that’s a constant reminder this isn’t a vehicle to pose in – it’s a tool, a faithful workhorse, and a dependable business partner.

Over the last few years, a lot of people have started going on long road trips more frequently in the country. The off-roading and camping enthusiasts of the country have now started splurging on their vehicles in which they take on these adventures. Recently, an extremely unique and purpose-built caravan with a Toyota Hilux as its base has been shared online. The video shows the details of this Toyota Hilux camper van, which has been equipped with a bed, kitchen, bathroom, proper air conditioner, generator, and a lot of other amenities.

This video of the Toyota Hilux Caravan has been shared on YouTube by First Indian Camper on their channel. It starts off with the presenter meeting the owner of this Hilux camper at a fuel station and driving the vehicle on the highway. Before driving the vehicle, the presenter asks the owner of the vehicle about his choice to go for the Hilux. To this, he replies that he wanted a vehicle that could provide comfort, reliability, and be good on-road and off-road, and hence he finalized the Toyota Hilux. Following this, he drives the vehicle and then states that despite all the added components, it does not feel too heavy and easily drives on the highway.
