The Ultimate Wyoming Travel Guide

Wyoming is the last remnant of Wild Wild West. With ranches, rodeos, mountains and wildlife, this is a land like no other. Whether you want to visit the mountains of Yellowstone and Grand Teton or see a rodeo in Cody, Wyoming travel is amazing. As you plan your Wyoming vacation, we’ve put together these posts from our travels. Our favorite Wyoming travels are all here. Whether you want to have a family vacation in Jackson Hole or do some camping in Yellowstone National Park, we have vacation planning tools for you.

Top 5 Things to do in Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park

Wyoming is a popular family destination. As such, it is very busy in the summer months when school is out. However, that is also the best tie to visit Wyoming as you’ll get beautiful weather. If you visit in early summer, you also may see wildflowers in the mountain regions.

If you want to avoid the crowds, we think the best time to visit Wyoming is in the early fall. September will still have beautiful weather and fewer tourists.

Know Before You Go

Currency and Budget:

The currency used in Wyoming is the US dollar. You’ll find that credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout the state. Visa, Mastercard and Discover are the most common. Cash is also widely used.

The prices in Wyoming are reasonable compared with other US areas. Hotels average between $80-$120. Meal prices average from $7-$30 depending on type of restaurant.

The official language of the US is English.

Getting Around:

In Wyoming, traveling by car is recommended. A majority of top Wyoming travel destinations are in wilderness areas. You’ll need a car to fully explore these areas. Tour companies also offer guided tours of the more popular Wyoming destinations, such as Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.

Wyoming has several airports. However, they are smaller airports and can have expensive tickets. Salt Lake City airport is one of the closer “budget” airports, with less expensive and ore direct flights.

As you travel around Wyoming, the most dangerous thing can be changing road and weather conditions, not to mention the wildlife one the road. Make sure to drive carefully and pay attention to changing conditions. Cell service and civilization can be difficult to find in remote areas.

Pronghorn antelope all but outnumber people in wide-open Wyoming, the ninth largest but least populous state in the union, with just 576,000 residents. This is classic cowboy country – the inspiration behind Shane, The Virginian and countless other Western novels – replete with open range, rodeos and country-music dance halls.

Grand Teton National Park

The bighorn mountains and bighorn basin.

The state emblem, seen everywhere, is a hat-waving cowboy astride a bucking bronco, and the spurious “Code of the West”, signed into state law in 2010 and urging residents to follow such maxims as “ride for the brand”, illustrates Wyoming’s ongoing attachment to the myths of the Wild West.

Unlikely as it may seem, this rowdy state was the first to grant women the right to vote in 1869 – a full half-century before the federal government, on the grounds that the enfranchisement of women would attract settlers and increase the population, thereby hastening statehood. A year later Wyoming appointed the country’s first women jurors, and the “Equality State” elected the first female US governor in 1924. Today the state government is dominated by Republicans and President Obama managed just 28 percent of the vote in 2012 (only in Utah did he get less).

The mineral extraction industry and the tourism sector are the main drivers of Wyoming’s modern economy. Indeed, the state is home to one of America’s most famous natural attractions, the simmering geothermal landscape of Yellowstone National Park, along with the craggy mountain vistas of adjacent Grand Teton National Park. Travelling to Yellowstone from South Dakota on I-90 you will pass the helter-skelter Bighorn Mountains, likeable Old West towns such as Cody and Buffalo, and the otherworldly outcrop of Devils Tower; anyone crossing the state from Nebraska to Utah on I-80 will also pass a handful of worthy detours.

The jagged tooth-like peaks of GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, stretching for fifty miles south from Yellowstone to Jackson, are more dramatic than the mountains of its superstar neighbour park to the north. These sheer-faced cliffs make a magnificent spectacle, rising abruptly to tower 7000ft above the valley floor. A string of gem-like lakes is set tight at the foot of the mountains; the park also encompasses the broad, sagebrush-covered Jackson Hole river basin (a “hole” was a pioneer term for a flat, mountain-ringed valley), broken by the gently winding Snake River, rich in elk, bison and moose – it’s a lot more common to see the latter here than in Yellowstone.

Of the three scenic highways that wind through the Bighorn Mountains, US-14A from Burgess Junction, fifty miles west of Sheridan, is the most spectacular. The road (typically closed Nov–May due to snow), edges its way up Medicine Mountain, on whose windswept western peak the mysterious Medicine Wheel – the largest such monument still intact – stands protected behind a wire fence. Local Native American legends offer no clues as to the original purpose of these flat stones, arranged in a circular “wheel” shape with 28 spokes and a circumference of 245ft – though the pattern suggests sun worship or early astronomy.

The route down the highway’s west side, with gradients of ten to twenty percent, is said to have cost more to build per mile than any other road in America. Tight hairpin bends will keep drivers’ eyes off the magnificent overlooks down into the Bighorn Basin, a sparsely vegetated valley walled in by mighty mountains on three sides and ragged foothills to the north.

9 amazing places to visit in Wyoming for big nature, outdoor adventure and cool towns

Jun 19, 2022 • 8 min read

One thing you won't find in Wyoming are bustling metropolises – the largest city, Cheyenne, has just 65,000 residents . But if you’re searching for a touch of the West – wide-open spaces, tall peaks, Native American history, wildlife, geysers, hot springs, hiking, skiing, horseback riding, fly-fishing and staged “gunslinger duels” – you’ll find it, along with plenty of small-town charm.

Different parts of the state feature different types attractions, from ski-town Jackson Hole to college-town Laramie and outdoor-icon Lander. Pick your destination – or opt for a few – and explore the best of Wyoming .

Yellowstone National Park

Best national park for geysers, wildlife.

Yellowstone is not only the country's first national park, it’s also packed with over 10,000 hydrothermal features, gorgeous scenery, and some of the best wildlife viewing in the world. Walk the boardwalks and peer into colorful multi-hued hydrothermal features, watch geysers erupt, and spend some time gazing at boiling mud – it’s far more mesmerizing than you would expect.

Old Faithful’s eruptions are so predictable that the park puts out a schedule of predicted eruption times for the iconic geyser and a few others. Be sure to show up early, though, since the predictions are just estimates, and you wouldn’t want to be a minute late.

Spend some time in wildlife hotspots like Lamar and Hayden valleys – dawn and dusk are considered prime time for wildlife viewing, though you can often spot some critters in Yellowstone – like bison herds – throughout the day.

Grand Teton National Park

Best national park for hiking.

Pull on your pack, clip your bear spray to your belt and get ready to hike. Grand Teton National Park is a favorite destination for trail lovers, encompassing great options for everything from an hour-long stroll to a multi-day hard-core adventure. For a scenic day hike, consider Jenny Lake, or hike up one of the park’s mountain canyons.

To snag an overnight backcountry permit , try for an advanced permit months ahead of time, or try for a first-come, first-serve permit, available in-person a day before the trip begins – competition for permits can be fierce, so have a backup plan.

Be well-prepared and equipped for any hike in the park, and check current conditions and weather, keeping in mind that mountain conditions can change very quickly. Be prepared for wildlife encounters, and practice good bear safety.

A person skis down a snowy slope with a rocky mountain peak in the background. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole

Best town for skiers.

Receiving over 500 inches of snow per year – which blankets some of the best terrain in the world – Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is on every avid skier’s bucket list. Get a reservation early and spend days cruising down the groomers or getting fresh powder turns out in Teton Village. Or stay in town and try out Jackson’s “Town Hill” – Snow King Mountain Resort – which is walkable from town.

Like any good ski town, Jackson also offers plenty of top-notch aprés-ski selections. Check out Teton Village’s range of options, from the Alpenhof to the Mangy Moose – where you can often catch live music – or venture into the town of Jackson to check out the Snake River Brewery , and other spots.

Best place to learn about the past

Spread across five different museums and a research library, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West tells the beautiful, grand and often chaotic story of the American West. All five museums are worth a visit, but if you're short on time, be sure to visit the Plains Indian Museum to learn about the Indigenous people who lived here long before Europeans arrived.

Founded in 1979, the museum showcases the Plains Indian peoples' rich cultures, histories, traditions and what their lives look like today. Peruse both historical artifacts, like an authentic buffalo hide tipi from around 1850, and contemporary works from local artists.

Cody is also home to the Plains Indian Powwow, which generally takes place in June.

The center’s other museums include the Buffalo Bill Museum, Whitney Western Art Museum, Draper Natural History Museum, and Cody Firearms Museum.

Best place for guest ranches

With fewer than 1000 residents, Dubois is tiny, but it’s one of the best places in the state to sign up for a week-long stay at one of the nearby guest or “dude” ranches. Experience life on the ranch, saddle up to explore, cast a fishing line, or sign up for a multi-day horsepacking trip deep into the wilderness.

In town, swing by the Dubois Museum , National Museum of Military Vehicles , and the National Bighorn Sheep Center , and be sure to check out the Dubois Friday Night Rodeo in the summer. Grab a deli sandwich, a slice of pizza, or even a steak in town, before heading out to immerse yourself in the world of ranching.

A small creek winds through a meadow, with a small mountain in the background – Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis, Wyoming, a geothermal area in Hot Springs County

Thermopolis

Best place to enjoy hot springs.

Best known for its hot springs, Thermopolis is a must-visit soaking paradise great for couples, groups, solo travelers and families. Opt for a relaxing soak at Hot Springs State Park ’s bathhouse or get ready for some hot springs water park action at Star Plunge, which has water slides, pools, and even a “vapor cave,” a natural steam room.

Thermopolis has more to offer than hot springs, though. Hike six miles of trails at the state park, visit the Wyoming Dinosaur Center , or hire a guide for a fishing trip or sign up for a horseback riding tour. Unwind or find the action – it’s all up to you.

Best outdoorsy town

Lander is home to the headquarters of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), so it’s no surprise there are lots of great outdoor adventures nearby. The town is full of people who are involved with NOLS in one way or another, and you’ll find no shortage of outdoor enthusiasts eager to climb some rock, go for a mountain bike ride, or scale a peak. And with Sinks Canyon State Park just down the road, you’ll find plenty of places to play.

After a day out and about, settle into town for a fun evening. Lander Brewing Company is a favorite spot to rehash the day’s adventures while sipping a pint of Rock Chuck Rye or Half-Tanked Hefe.

Best college town vibe

Laramie is home not only to the University of Wyoming and Cowboys football, but also to the country’s highest elevation Division 1 stadium , at a sky-high  7220ft.

This vibrant college town always has some sort of event, party, live music, art walk, farmers market or other activity going on that keeps you hopping around town. Don’t miss Laramie Jubilee Days in July.

Laramie also has one of the most diverse food scenes in the state, with an array of cuisines including Indian, Mexican, Italian, Thai, and Japanese. Find a coffee shop perfect for studying or cozying up with a good book, and drop by one of the many local watering holes to watch a game or just hang out.

People and traffic pass by downtown Cheyenne's historic buildings.

Best place for a classic Wyoming experience

Cheyenne isn’t just Wyoming’s capital city – it also occupies a special place in every country music lover’s heart. From George Strait’s “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” to Garth Brooks’ “The Beaches of Cheyenne,” the city keeps coming up in country music, decade after decade, for a reason. Head to the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum for a touch of rodeo history or visit during rodeo season to see what all the fuss is about. If you're there during the rodeo, check out the “Indian Village” where Native American performers have shared dance, culture and music each year since 1898.

Cheyenne is rich in history, so be sure to spend some time immersing yourself in local lore and history at the Wyoming State Capitol , Wyoming Historic Governors Mansion , Cheyenne Depot Museum for railroad history. The Nelson Museum of the West showcases a number of Native American exhibits, including Art of the Pueblo Indians and Art of the Plains Indians. In summer, head to “Gunslinger Square” downtown to watch a staged Wild West gunfight, and hop on the Cheyenne Street Railway Trolley to learn all about Wild West history.

All around Cheyenne, you’ll see 8ft-tall “ Big Boots ” on display. These large-scale creations are custom-designed by a variety of Wyoming artists as pieces of public art.

Best fly-fishing town

A river town through and through, Casper is known for its top-notch fly-fishing. Venture out to the “Miracle Mile” for trout, or stay in town and fish the North Platte River as it runs through Casper. While the North Platte is a blue-ribbon fishing destination, you can also cast your rod in other waters nearby, including Alcova Reservoir and Fremont Canyon. Stop by a fly shop to learn about local conditions or hire a guide to make your day out fishing even better.

Stop by the Fort Caspar Museum and Historic Site , National Historic Trails Interpretive Center , and Salt Creek Museum to learn more about local history, or visit the Casper Planetarium for a peek out into the cosmos. With half a dozen breweries, Casper has earned a spot on the Wyoming Beer Trail , and Gruner Brothers Brewing offers tours for a peek behind the scenes.

Planning a Trip to Wyoming: A Complete How-To

Are you planning to trip to Wyoming? Better things come to those who know what to expect when they’re visiting a state as vast as this one. Help me help you with this Wyoming trip planner!

Wyoming is home to wide open spaces , Western vibes, and some of the most spectacular national parks in the United States . If you’re planning a trip to Wyoming, you likely have a pretty epic Wyoming road trip in mind. Use this guide to help plan your trip and narrow down your focus on a visit to Wyoming.

What is Wyoming best known for?

Wyoming is best known for being home to Yellowstone National Park. It’s also popular with travelers seeking legitimate cowboy culture , steaming springs and water features, and Grand Teton National Park’s scenic vistas.

Steaming pools at Yellowstone, a must when planning a trip to Wyoming

What do I need to know about Wyoming?

There are a few things you should know about Wyoming before your visit:

  • Yellowstone is just as impressive as everybody says. If you’re able, get off the boardwalks and hit some of the park’s longer trails . You’ll lose some of the people who overwhelm the park in the peak summer months.
  • You’ll need to drive…a lot. Unless you’re sticking to one city like Cheyenne, you’ll likely be enjoying many of those wide open spaces from your car. I promise the long car rides are worth it. Wyoming is scenic as heck.
  • Wyoming reps the American West. If you don’t love Western wear and cowboy culture, you’ll need to embrace it all temporarily while you’re in Wyoming, my little cowpoke.

What time of year is best to visit Wyoming?

The best time of year to visit Wyoming depends on what you’re looking for in a trip to the Cowboy State.

Generally, summer will boast the best weather for hikers if you’re not worried about sticking to a budget during high-season travel. This is also prime time for the state’s rodeos, something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

A horse with a cowboy hat in Cheyenne, a town you should consider when planning a trip to Wyoming

September and October are shoulder months in the national parks, so you’ll meet fewer people on the trails during the early fall. Just expect some snow and chilly temperatures if you’re headed into any elevation. If that’s not a deterrent, you’ll find decent weather in the valley and excellent fall foliage.

Note: Ski season starts around Thanksgiving if you’re planning a trip to Jackson Hole for ski adventures.

May is also a great month for travel in the state’s national parks. The weather’s delightful and prices aren’t yet at their peak.

If you’re a skier, you can take advantage of the lengthy ski season in Jackson Hole. Resorts are open well into March, sometimes even into April. That means snow elsewhere, though. March and April aren’t as enjoyable if you’re there for the parks. Amenities aren’t yet operating, and the weather’s cold, wet, and sometimes snowy.

How do I get to Wyoming?

You can get to Wyoming on a longer road trip into the state or by flying into one of the state’s airports.

If you’re traveling to Yellowstone, you’ll be choosing from available regional airports in the following towns: Cody and Jackson in Wyoming, Bozeman and Billings in Montana , and Idaho Falls in Idaho. All of those are within driving distance of the park, so really it depends on the deals you’re able to find or whether you’re prioritizing efficiency.

Bison in Yellowstone, a must when planning a trip to Wyoming

Here’s the rundown on distances from Yellowstone National Park:

  • Yellowstone Airport (10 minutes from West Entrance)
  • Jackson Hole Airport (1 hour from South Entrance)
  • Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (1 hour 30 minutes from North Entrance)
  • Yellowstone Regional Airport (1 hour 30 minutes from East Entrance)
  • Idaho Falls Regional Airport (2 hours 30 minutes from West Entrance)
  • Salt Lake City International Airport (5 hours to West Entrance)

Skiers will be happy to find that Jackson Hole has its own airport. Getting a good deal to fly there, though, is unlikely.

You’ll probably be connecting from one of the major airports into any of the above options, so if you’re up for a longer road trip, flights into Denver, Colorado , or Salt Lake City, Utah, will offer more opportunities for good flight deals.

Use a tool like Skyscanner if you’re flexible with your timing and want to watch a few different routes, especially if you’re traveling into one of the larger transportation hubs.

Unfortunately, those looking for scenic train travel won’t find it here. Amtrak doesn’t have routes that cut through the state, so your best bet to get around once you’re there will be renting a car.

How to Get Around Wyoming

You’re going to want a car to get around Wyoming whether you’re focused on adventure times in Yellowstone National Park or traveling throughout the state.

Use a site like Hotwire or Priceline for deals on rental cars and book well in advance if you’re traveling in the peak months, especially if you need a specific type of vehicle for your travel.

If you’re interested in a Jackson Hole trip planner and staying in Jackson, you could get by without a car by using the START Bus, ride-share services, or taxis. If you’re heading there on a ski trip, it may be worth the extra expense for the convenience and efficiency of having your own ride to get from Point A to Point B and to carry all of your gear.

How much does a trip to Wyoming cost?

A trip to Wyoming can cost about $1,200 per person for a week of travel. That’s if you can find a cheap budget flight into one of the transportation hubs nearby, book cheap accommodations, and spend time cooking your own food vs. eating out for all of your meals.

Pricing jumps considerably if you’re spending a seven-day trip in Yellowstone during high season or planning a ski vacation in Jackson Hole. I don’t camp, but that can be an option for you in the national parks to save some cash. Just book camping sites well in advance if you’re traveling in the summer months.

Planning a Trip to Wyoming: Places to Go in Wyoming

We’ve spent quite a bit of time in Wyoming by this point. Here are a few stops we would highlight on your trip here. I’d suggest prioritizing the national parks above all else.

A rock climbing area in Cheyenne, a town you should consider when planning a trip to Wyoming

You don’t have to be collecting state capitals to make it a point to see Cheyenne while you’re in Wyoming. Despite my personal feelings about Cheyenne, this city of around 65,000 residents is classic Wyoming.

Embrace the state’s rodeo history at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, tour the Wyoming State Capitol, and find as many Big Boots around town as you can.

Fun fact: These art installations have been painted by local artists to show off the history of both Cheyenne and the state.

With more time, take some of the best trips out of the city . That includes one of my favorite places, Fort Collins in Colorado.

Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower, a must when planning a trip to Wyoming

Devils Tower was the country’s first national monument, designated as such in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt . This imposing geological formation is accessible from both South Dakota and Wyoming, but however you access it, it’s worth the trip.

A trip to Devils Tower is worth it for the views alone, but you’ll also get some great hiking trails and wildlife spotting at this park. If you’re able, hike the Red Beds Trail for expansive views of Devils Tower without the need to zoom out.

Grand Teton National Park

A beautiful view of Mormon Row in the Tetons is worth the effort when planning a trip to Wyoming.

Grand Teton National Park is home to one of the prettiest views you’ll get in the state at Mormon Row.

There are so many other places to visit around Grand Teton that are almost as attractive. Feast your eyes on Jackson Lake, a 15-mile long glacial lake, or Jenny Lake, one of the most popular spots in the park for a reason. Even the visitor center comes with expansive views of the Teton Range.

If you’re just not sure where to start, I always suggest picking a hike or two if you’re able to see a place from your feet. My guide to the best hikes in the Tetons and more is a good primer with treks at all levels.

Interested in guided experiences while you’re here? Here are a few highly-rated options:

An arch made of antlers welcomes tourists to Jackson when planning a trip to Wyoming.

Jackson, or Jackson Hole if you’re nasty and talking about the valley in town, is a year-round destination. If you’re here to ski and feeling a little fancy, Teton Village surrounds the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. If you’re allergic to skiing like me and prefer summertime outdoor pursuits, Jackson is a super cute way to do all of that.

Seriously, downtown Jackson is very cute.

While you’re there, meet some elk at the National Elk Refuge, soak in the Granite Hot Springs, or set up shop for a few days while you plot out your drive to Yellowstone from Jackson . If I had more of a cash surplus, I’d spend quite a bit more time in this town. (I’d probably skip the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, though.)

Interested in guided experiences around Jackson that aren’t Yellowstone? Check out these highly-rated options:

Yellowstone National Park

Steaming geysers in Yellowstone, a must when planning a trip to Wyoming

What’s the number one attraction in Wyoming? The number one attraction in Wyoming is Yellowstone National Park. That’s likely because it’s home to Old Faithful, one of the most popular attractions in the United States. It could also be thanks to Yellowstone Lake, the largest high-elevation lake in North America.

Maybe it’s the Grand Prismatic Spring, the Norris Geyser Basin, or the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

I could come up with a list of a dozen different spots for you to check out in Yellowstone alone before touching the rest of the state, but that’d be pretty rude to Wyoming. You could spend weeks exploring this park and still not see everything there is to see. Interested in a Yellowstone itinerary? I have a guide to three days in the park .

If you’re short on time, guided experiences are always an option. Check out these highly-rated guided tours:

More Best Places in Wyoming to Visit

A Wild West town in Cody, a town you should stop in when planning a trip to Wyoming.

We’ve spent months in Wyoming and still haven’t ticked off everything there is to do in this massive state. There’s just always so much driving involved to get from one place to the next. Here are a few Wyoming attractions that are still on our list:

  • Bighorn National Forest: Visit this expanse of natural beauty for towering mountains, deep canyons, and over a million acres of wilderness. The Bighorn Mountains are the biggest draw here, but locals love the forest as a serene retreat and hiking destination .
  • The Buffalo Bill Center of the West: You need to travel to Cody to get there, but once you’re there, you’ll be treated to a complex of five different museums and a library dedicated to the American West. Start at the Buffalo Bill Museum, naturally. You’ll learn all about the history of its namesake along with tales of other famous cowboys (and cowgirls).
Fun fact: Buffalo Bill’s full name was William Frederick Cody, so you can call him Buffalo Bill Cody, Fred Cody, really anything you please.
  • Casper: The river scene is real in Casper. This town is known for its fly-fishing all along the North Platte River that makes its way through Casper. History buffs won’t want to miss the Fort Caspar Museum and Historic Site and the Salt Creek Museum for a taste of the local history.
  • Dubois: This small Wyoming town has become a hot spot for one activity that won’t surprise you in the least: dude ranches. If you want to experience the Wild West at its best, visit one of the town’s ranches for a weekend on horseback. If you’re here in the summer, you can be more of a spectator at the Dubois Friday Night Rodeo.
  • Thermopolis: Visit Thermopolis for a more relaxing approach to Wyoming. The town is home to Hot Springs State Park, a paradise for couples planning Wyoming travel. To add a little dino intrigue to your Wyoming trip, stop at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center.

Wyoming Trip Planner: Sample Itineraries

One week in Wyoming will only scratch the surface of Wyoming travel, but that just means you may have to come back for more. I f you’re planning a Wyoming road trip, here are a few ideas for a full week’s worth of activities.

Option 1: Wyoming National Parks Adventure

  • Day 1: Arrive in Jackson, Wyoming.
  • Day 2: Explore Grand Teton National Park.
  • Day 3: Arrive in Yellowstone National Park.
  • Day 4: Explore Yellowstone National Park.
  • Day 5: Arrive in Cody, Wyoming.
  • Day 6: Explore Cody and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
  • Day 7: Depart from Cody or return via Jackson.

Option 2: Wyoming Towns & Wilderness

  • Day 1: Arrive in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
  • Day 2: Explore Curt Gowdy State Park.
  • Day 3: Hike in Medicine Bow National Forest.
  • Day 4: Tour Fort Laramie National Historic Site.
  • Day 5: Visit Laramie, Wyoming .
  • Day 6: Relax at Saratoga Hot Springs.
  • Day 7: Depart from Cheyenne.

Option 3: Geological Wonders & the Wild West

  • Day 1: Arrive in Sundance, Wyoming, via Denver, Colorado.
  • Day 2: Visit Devils Tower National Monument.
  • Day 3: Learn about the mining industry in Gillette, Wyoming.
  • Day 4: Experience the Wild West in Buffalo, Wyoming.
  • Day 5: Meet the King of Cowboy Towns in Sheridan, Wyoming.
  • Day 6: Explore Bighorn National Forest.
  • Day 7: Depart from Sheridan or return via Denver.

What are five interesting facts about Wyoming?

Just because there aren’t many folks living in Wyoming doesn’t mean it doesn’t boast some fun facts. Here are a few of my favorite fun facts about Wyoming.

  • A nefarious Wyoming connection is the outlaw Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, better known as the Sundance Kid, who got the nickname from the Sundance jail he frequented in his teens.
  • This one surprised me, as women’s suffrage doesn’t come to the top of my mind when it comes to the Cowboy State. Wyoming was the first state to grant women the right to vote in 1869.
  • The bison is the state mammal, but Wyoming’s also the birthplace of the jackalope. The antlered jackrabbit was the creation of Douglas, Wyoming, brothers Douglas and Ralph Herrick, who sold their unique taxidermy in the 1930s.
  • Wyoming also boasts a state dinosaur, the triceratops, as a nod to its importance amongst fossil hunters . There’s even a cabin made out of fossil bones near Medicine Bow, Wyoming, which isn’t creepy at all.
  • You know that game you used to play on those pixelated computer screens? A good chunk of the actual Oregon Trail stretched all the way across Wyoming. Start at the Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site in Guernsey, Wyoming.
Note: From what I’ve read, it was just as dramatic as the game in terms of the fording of rivers and dysentery and such.

What to Pack to Wyoming

A group of cowboys prep for planning a trip to Wyoming.

Most folks will be headed to Wyoming for Yellowstone, and I certainly don’t blame you for that. Below, check out what you should pack on trips that might include one of the country’s best national parks, in addition to other adventures out into the wild of Wyoming. Western wear, here we come!

Cowboy Boots

This is one of those states where you can definitely pull off some cowboy boots without any irony. They’ll be especially welcome if you hit up any of the state rodeos, like the big annual event in Cheyenne. When in Wyoming, right?

I’ve already mentioned the idea of potential rodeo opportunities while planning a Wyoming itinerary. So what are you waiting for? Pick up a cowboy hat to help you blend in with the crowd.

Flannels aren’t just Western wear anymore. They’re essential to any hipster wardrobe. But also, yes, they’re Western wear. In the case of Wyoming, you’ll absolutely fit in with a flannel or two , particularly in the cooler months.

Hiking Backpack

A good portion of Wyoming travelers will likely head to Yellowstone National Park, which is certainly recommended. That means bringing your Yellowstone hiking gear, e.g. a good backpack, water bladder, and a solid pair of shoes, which I’m also including on this list. As Scar once said, “Be prepared!” We’re Osprey brand loyalists if you want to start there.

Hiking Shoes

You knew these were coming. Yellowstone hiking can be some serious hiking. Pack accordingly. No matter which hiking shoes you choose, make sure your hiking trip isn’t the first time you’re wearing them. That’s a one-way ticket to blister city. I like the water-resistant varieties of the Altra shoes above for inclement weather days.

Rain Jacket

If you’re visiting Wyoming after the summer months, you’ll need to start layering up. If you’re visiting in the spring, especially, that could mean some rain on your parade. Bring at least a light rain jacket that’s easily packed away in your luggage so that you’re still able to enjoy the great outdoors.

Waterproof Pants

A pair of waterproof pants isn’t just a no-brainer for inclement weather. They’re perfect for hiking, too, as they’re quick to dry and likely made of more breathable materials. Pack a pair if Yellowstone is on the agenda, particularly if you’re headed out in the cooler shoulder months.

If you’re of the ski bunny variety and heading to Jackson Hole for terrific ski times , you better pack all the winter gear items. Even if you’re just in the lodge all weekend, you’ll want to look the part. Start from the top with a warm winter hat and work your way down.

Winter Jacket

Jackson Hole is ski country come the winter months. That means you’ll need to plan accordingly. Bring a warm winter jacket along whether you’re hitting the slopes or hitting the hot toddies in the ski lodge.

This isn’t an exciting packing list add-on, but it’s an essential one, whether you’re hitting the slopes in Jackson Hole or hiking about Yellowstone. Wool socks somehow both wick away moisture and keep your feet warm. It’s all quite magical.

Are you looking for more general travel gear, no matter the trip? Visit all of my faves at my Favorite Things page !

What foods are famous in Wyoming?

A bison burger, one of the things you should eat when planning a trip to Wyoming

Foods famous in Wyoming include:

  • Bison burgers
  • Chicken fried steak
  • Chokecherries
  • Rocky Mountain oysters
  • Sausage gravy

*This juicy tomato variety is only grown in Big Piney, at 7,400 feet.

Wyoming Festival & Special Events

If you’re planning a trip to Wyoming during a specific time of year, consider whether there are any festivals or holidays happening. You may want to attend special events or avoid them, as holidays often mean businesses are closed. Holiday dates below are consistent from year to year. Check online for specific festival dates.

Old West Days (May)

Jackson’s Old West Days is an annual spring festival celebrating, you guessed it, the days of the Old West. Expect live music, cold brews, and antler auctions. Yes, I said antler auctions.

Cody Stampede (June)

The town of Cody is big into its rodeo scene. The annual Cody Stampede kickoff is typically held around mid-June and is followed by a summer of events celebrating the town’s cowpoke history. Yee-haw!

Gold Rush Days (July)

Gold Rush Days in South Pass City is a two-day event that celebrates the town’s mining roots. Expect to pan for gold, ride in a stagecoach and take in some live music, all with the backdrop of mining machinery all around. That’s quite enticing, right?

Green River Rendezvous (July)

The annual Green River Rendezvous in Pinedale celebrates the state’s Mountain Man traditions. It’s a weekend of Native American storytelling , parades, rodeos, and lecture series.

Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo (July/August)

It wouldn’t be a Wyoming info page without at least two rodeo events. This one is the most well-known. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo is what you’re likely imagining a big rodeo event to be: bucking broncos, professional bull-riding, grand parades, and a pretty impressive live music lineup of country music stars.

Wyoming Vacation Planning: FAQs

What is unique about wyoming.

Wyoming is unique for boasting the very first national park: Yellowstone. It also had the first dude ranch in the country, which shouldn’t surprise you now that I’ve told you about its connection to cowboy culture.

What is the prettiest place in Wyoming?

The prettiest place in Wyoming is Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park. It’s one of the most photographed spots in the state, and for good reason.

Pretty is certainly subjective, though, and there are quite a few absolutely breathtaking places to visit in Wyoming. Let’s take a look at a few more top places to visit on your Wyoming trip.

What are the best places to see wildlife in Wyoming?

The best place to see wildlife in Wyoming are the state’s national parks, Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

Is Wyoming a safe state?

Wyoming is a very safe state, with some of the lowest crime rates in the country. That makes sense when you think about its population. Despite its size, it’s the “smallest” in terms of population.

Should I visit Montana or Wyoming?

You should visit Wyoming, but then you should visit Montana. Both states are full of possibilities for outdoor adventures, national park excursions , and as much isolation as you can handle. Glacier National Park and Yellowstone are a match made in national park heaven , by the way.

Is Wyoming a good place to visit?

Wyoming is a good place to visit if you want to experience some of the most impressive national parks in the United States and are here for outdoor adventures. If you’re here for a city break, it may be less impressive. Other than Alaska , Wyoming has the lowest population density of any other state.

Focus on Wyoming’s natural pursuits and you won’t be disappointed. Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks should be on anyone’s bucket list!
