Castle Gwynn History

The vision began in 1970 as high school architecture student Mike Freeman drafted his dream home a "Castle". His dream, hard work, and sacrifices have led Mike and his wife Jackie on a long journey. The story behind castle gwynn, home to the tennessee renaissance festival.

France, Wales, England – certainly. Nestled high in the Alps overlooking the moors of Scotland – absolutely. But turrets in Tennessee? Not likely, you say?

If that’s your final answer, then you apparently have never driven the scenic stretch of State Route 840 near Arrington and Triune, where a white stone and brick structure rises through the trees on the west side of the road. It looks strikingly like, well … a castle.

And, in fact, it is. It’s Castle Gwynn, a startling replica of a 12th-century Welsh border castle and the private home of Nashville-native Mike Freeman, a portrait photographer, and his wife, Jackie, a retired schoolteacher. It’s also the location of the annual Tennessee Renaissance Festival each May. Scroll through the photos below to learn some interesting information about Tennessee’s very own castle:

Castle Gwynn’s owner had been dreaming of building it since high school.

A work in progress since 1970, Castle Gwynn began as a product of Mike Freeman’s imagination in a high school architecture class. A teacher instructed students to sketch their dream house.

“I started drawing the plans for a medieval castle,” recalls Freeman. “In 1980, we broke ground on it.”

For Freeman, the question was never “if” he would build his castle – it was always “how.”

“If you’re willing to work hard, anything’s possible,” he says with the glint of experience in his eye. “People think just because I live in a castle, I’m rich. But for perspective, consider the fact that I work 12- to 18-hour days, and it has taken us 26 years to build the castle so far. I pay for it as I go, and when I run out of money, I stop working.”

Following his high school graduation, Freeman spent 10 years establishing his photography career, doing research and looking for land on which to build his castle.

“After talking about it for 10 years, I either had to build the castle or become the biggest liar in Tennessee,” Freeman says with a chuckle.

Bartering, trading and even ending a relationship helped build the castle.

Freeman met a man named John Covington who became enchanted with his idea, and Covington made it possible for him to buy 40 acres of land near Arrington and Triune.

“He was kind of like the grandfather I never had,” Freeman says.

When he was ready to start building, he called upon Kenneth Canaday, a master mason from Hickman County he’d made a deal with a decade earlier.

“I dated his daughter in high school and asked him then if he’d help me with the fancy work on my castle one day,” Freeman says, grinning. “He said, ‘Yes, if you stop dating my daughter.’ So I did, and he did.”

With the occasional help of Canaday’s four sons, Freeman and Canaday spent two years of weekends molding 14,000 bricks into 60 arches in the castle kitchen. In return for their work, Freeman photographed all four of Canaday’s sons’ weddings.

“Mike does a lot of bartering and swapping trades,” says Jackie Freeman. “Nobody’s given him anything. He’s worked and bartered around the clock for all of it.”

With its brick arches, stained-glass windows and handmade tile floor depicting a coat of arms, the intricately detailed kitchen is the castle’s crowning glory. But it’s only the beginning.

Castle Gwynn- TN Renaissance Festival

Castle Gwynn’s name comes from its color.

Castle Gwynn boasts two seven-story towers connected by a brick cloister, or walkway, with Indiana limestone arches. A stone and brick double staircase, modeled after a staircase at the White House, descends from the front of the castle and has been the backdrop for several weddings, including the Freemans’ own.

SEE ALSO:   Sutton Old Time Music Hour in Granville

The couple resides in Castle Gwynn’s north tower, and the south tower, still under construction, is used mainly for entertaining guests. Both towers are stucco white.

“Castles were often white, because there’s no way an intruder can climb a white wall on the darkest night without being seen,” Freeman says. “Gwynn is the Welsh word for ‘white,’ so Castle Gwynn means ‘White Castle.’ ”

The south tower’s first floor is a garage, above which is the great room – a two-story reception area with a balcony, domed ceiling, brick arches, chandelier and hooded fireplace.

The modern castle blends 21st-century convenience with medieval history.

Plans for the south tower’s upper floors include a honeymoon suite with a personal elevator and hot tub.

The aforementioned kitchen is on the north tower’s ground floor. A small elevator hides behind an elegant wooden door, as do modern appliances like the washer and dryer. Electrical outlets are also hidden, as well as the 21st-century heating and cooling systems.

Take the elevator or winding stairs up from the kitchen, and you’re in the living room, which features a brick fireplace, antique furniture, stained-glass lamps, a collection of 16th-century medieval swords and a 450-year-old original painting of Queen Elizabeth I.

Upper floors in the north tower include the master bedroom and bath, a den/game room, an armory where Freeman plans to display his seven suits of armor, and an exercise room with a hot tub and triangular windows. Each floor has a bathroom.

A 12-ton, 30-foot-diameter cone-shaped roof tops the north tower, while a similar one under construction rests on the ground below waiting to be installed atop the south tower.

Taylor Swift made the Tennessee castle famous.

Back in 2008, Castle Gwynn received nationwide recognition thanks to its appearance in Taylor Swift’s music video “Love Story.” Loosely inspired by Romeo and Juliet (but with a happy ending), the song became the first single of her album Fearless . Sources say that her team considered traveling to Europe to film in a castle there before they learned about this one, located right in Middle Tennessee where the singer lived.

Jousters at the Tennessee Renaissance Festival

For one month of the year, you can visit the Middle Tennessee castle.

Every weekend in May and on Memorial Day, the Freemans open parts of their medieval home to the public during the Tennessee Renaissance Festival , which they started in 1986.

“People were very curious about the castle, so we thought if we did a festival once a year, we could share it with people,” Freeman says.

During the festival, the castle grounds come alive with entertainers dressed in Renaissance clothing; artisans selling jewelry, costumes, artwork and accessories; food vendors selling everything from turkey legs to funnel cakes; jousting tournaments by knights on horseback; games and man-powered rides; and tours of Castle Gwynn.

Though it took him 11 years to break even on the festival and required more work than most people would care to invest, Freeman insists both the castle and the festival have been well worth his efforts.

“I never gave up,” he says. “And I’ve been fortunate to have some very talented people share in my dream.”

Joust in Time

The 2024 dates are as follows: May 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 18th, 19th, 25th, 26th and 27th (Memorial Day).

We are going to Nashville next weekend (aug.13). i was wondering if people are allowed to come visit the castle?

Rachel, I can’t be sure without contacting the folks at Castle Gwynn, but I believe they only open the castle for tours during the Tennessee Renaissance Festival every May. You can call to double check. Their phone number: (615) 395-9950.

Hope this helps, thanks for reading!

Only in May..you don’t see anything inside the castle other than one floor. I don’t think it is a floor they even use. If you are going to more than just the outside not worth the trip.

Do you allow weddings at castle Gwynn

Hi Mairiea, You’ll have to contact the folks at Castle Gwynn for questions about hosting events and tours. Their phone number: (615) 395-9950.

What a beautiful view of your home from 840. We marvel at it everytime we are driving to nashville, like today. We found it on the internet. Maybe we will come to see it firsthand now during the designated times. Very happy to no people still believe in dreams and persue them. Congratulations

I was told in passing that photographers are allowed to take pictures at the castle such as Senior Pictures. If this is correct , I would love information on when this can be done and do you have specific photographers who are permitted to do so. Thank you.

Mandy, To find out information about when the castle is open as well as if pictures and portraits can be taken there, contact the folks at Castle Gwynn. Their phone number: (615) 395-9950.

I was passing by on the interstate and seen this castle while on my way to Franklin today. I came home and looked it up. My, how interesting! And beautiful. If you ever need any perennials or garden plants, stop by or send me an email or call. I would love to contribute to your whimsical castle.

Do you rent the.castle out for special occasions such as weddings

Julie, To find out information about renting out Castle Gwynn, you’ll want to contact the castle owners directly at (615) 395-9950.

I live in Wisconsin and my 12 year old daughter is going on a trip to tn in about a week. She is going because of Taylor swift because of course Taylor is her role model. How good of a chance do you think there is the owner would let her check it out?

Kay, I’m not sure, but you can contact the owners at (615) 395-9950.

Thanks, Jessy Yancey editor, Tennessee Home & Farm

i went there before and went inside and tored around

I always wanted to learn how became of the castle. What inspiration

I am involved with doing an independent film and am writing to ask if there is a chance we could film there. Your Great room would be ideal.. the scene is a meeting taking place… it is a Si Fi/ Action film and has a strong anti-neo nazi theme. We would most likely need two days on a weekend. We can list you in our credits and put the picture of the castle on our theater poster and dvd cover as well. We are pros coming together to do this project, but on a start up budget. Please let us know if you might be interested in doing this sometime in the next few months. Thank You so much for your consideration! Happy to pass on more information if you are interested! Danny Ramsey

To find out more information about using the castle for filming, you will need to contact the owners directly at (615) 395-9950. Hope this helps! Thanks for reading!

Can’t wait to hear the 2013 dates!!

Hi Becky, thanks for the reminder. We’ve updated the post with 2013 dates!

Jessy Yancey editor Tennessee Home & Farm

You know we have the same dream Mr. Freeman. Congratulations! And I really admire your determination to make your dreams come true. I was so inspired. I hope one day I can come to see your castle.

I am a the 5th great grand daughter of Samuel Gwinn who was born between 1745-1752 in Augusta, VA, his father Robert Gwinn born in Wales around 1720 and died 1785 in Augusta, VA…I would like to know why you chose the name Gwynn as the name of your castle…Some day my dream is to go to Wales to see my family castle…also would like to see Castle Gwynn..

“Gwynn is the Welsh word for ‘white,’ so Castle Gwynn means ‘White Castle.’ Here’s the answer to your question – it was in the article above the comments.

dear Sharon, I am a Descendent of Samuel gwin. I do not recall contacting you but I would like to be in touch. Did you ever find out about why the castle is named Gwynne? There was a Gwynne in goodletsville who was rather famous who started a a holo for girls! There is a town Hal or post office with a mural depicting them. Hope to hear from you soon.

Our family will be traveling in your area Saturday, June 22 and were wondering if we are able to view the castle and the grounds. All the information I can gather is, the castle is a private residence and open only during the May Festival to guest. We would of course respect your privacy in not approaching the grounds if it is not possible.

Hi Dan, Thanks for your comment! We suggest contacting Castle Gwynn directly for tour information. You can visit their website at http://www.tnrenfest.com/castleGwynnTours.htm . Hope this helps!

Hello, my name is Gwen, i past by your place today and showed it to a friend of mine, we are over the road drivers and were on our way to a truck stop in Murfreesboro, Tn. I wanted to see if i could find any information/ back ground and low and behold i typed in Almaville and a list came up, one being about your castle. I thought it was neat to find out the name that you chose because that is also what my name variation means as well, more so to add Lady of Vision, or White Lady. I just wanted to share that with you and let you know that this is the second time ive seen your place as ive traveled by, the first time for my friend. We both enjoyed seeing it very much. Cudos to you for your effort and perseverance. I hope that you are able to continue your endeavors so long as you feel it is unfinished. Perhaps someday, both i and my friend and stop by and say hello. Bright Blessings! Gwendolyn Shepperson Brown

Mike, I love visting your castle every year. Someone said you graduated from dickson high school. I graduated from dickson in 1977.

Wow! When I passed your castle on the road I was blown away. My family is originally from Scotland and I have been obsessed with castles from a very young age. You have inspired me to dream for MY own castle ! I am definitely going to come back this way with my Mom and take advantage of your generosity to allow the public a peek. Thank you ! Trent Gill

How exciting to learn of an American version of the family castle. My Mom’s maiden name was Guynn and we have a bit of history of the original castle (pictures, restoration, etc.) in Wales. You have done a fantastic job and I would love to be able to visit your castle some day.

What is the name of the original castle in Wales? Thank you.

Have been driving by this for years and always wondered about it. What an awesome story! Always follow your dreams. Will try to make it back that way in May for the faire if it’s still going on. Thanks for the story, I will pass it on to my family because we were all curious about it.

Thank you for your info to Castle Gwynn! That sounds so interesting so that trip is in our near further!

This is very good. Jogs my recollection of this version. Floor

Do they allow someone to schedule appointments to take senior portraits? Only on the outside like on the stairs or in the arch openings?

Please contact Castle Gwynn directly at http://www.tnrenfest.com/contact07q.htm . They should be able to answer your questions. Hope this helps! Thanks!

CASTELL GWYNN

Castell gwynn is the realization of mike freeman's dream, one begun in 1970 in a high school architecture class, in which he drew the first sketches of his dream house. with the help of parents joe paul and bessie freeman, he established his professional photography career and began his search for the proper location for such a structure. just south of nashville, near the small town of triune, a landowner named john covington made it possible for the young dreamer to purchase a portion of his land. the first tower was begun in 1980: five stories of which the first-floor kitchen is the crowning glory. master mason kenneth canady worked two years molding the 14,000 bricks into 60 arches. tilemaker david wright highlighted his feat with his reproduction of the castle coat-of-arms. castell gwynn will be completed as a four-towered structure. finer points of the plans began to take shape when mike visited a twelfth-century border castle in wales. castell coche, or "red castle," became the prototype of castell gwynn, or "white castle." the second tower, begun in 1985, boasts a focal point of castell gwynn: a second-floor great hall. under a 28' ceiling, a balcony with a minstrel gallery will lead into the area. the great hooded fireplace is indiana limestone: 14' tall x 6' wide x 3' deep. the mantel, resting at a height of 5 1/2 feet, is 7' thick and 6' long. finished with a coat-of-arms, the fireplace will center a room with cut-stone ceiling arches. the third and fourth towers will feature guest suites, including a "honeymoon suite" with personal elevator and hot tub in a glass gazebo on the roof. castell gwynn is the centerpiece of the tennessee renaissance festival, held from 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. each weekend in may, and memorial day. the fully-costumed festival is held in a shaded site, complete with entertainment, crafts, games, and foods. each day features several armored jousts. unlike other renaissance festivals, it is the only one in the country which is held on the grounds of a castle residence. tours of the castle are included in the admission price. the castle and festival are located between 1-24 and i-65, thirty minutes south of nashville, tn. further information at (615) 395-9950. {{castlefinder note}} princess patricia and i visited this castle in march of 1999. the interior design and decoration are perfect, including a beautiful suit of armor. this castle is a "must see" for castle lovers. the castle is a private residence and can only be toured during the tennessee renaissance festival when your ticket to the festival also gets you a tour of the castle, enjoy. on 5-27-05, i received e-mail that said: castell gwynn in triune, tn really is a beautiful work-in-progress. but mike has done a lot of work since the picture on your website. he has added a roof to the main tower that they live in. he used authentic wooden pegs and everything. i don't have a picture myself but it can be seen at the tennessee renaissance festival website on 6-5-07, i received e-mail that said: just wanted to let you know that castle gwynn has come a long way in recent years on 25 may 2007, a roof was added to the second tower. you can read about it, here: http://www.newschannel5.com/global/story.asps=6572452 on 11-24-08, i received e-mail that said: "castell gwynn" was just used to shoot the video for country musician taylor swift's song "love story". on 4-22-10, i received e-mail that said: the family that owns it and lives in it actually lets the tennessee renaissance festival take place on their property and opens up portions of the castle to the public for the festival. i attached a link i found about the history and when i drive by it on my way to work tomorrow i will take a few pics for you. http://tnhomeandfarm.com/index.php/site/tennesseeliving/articles/his_home_is_this_castle back to "castles of the united states" a special thanks to mike and jackie freeman for the picture and information on this page..

Castle Gwynn is owned by the same guy who hosts the Tennessee Renaissance Festival on his property. During the time of the festival he busses people over for tours of the castle. He has made it his life-long mission to build this castle as authentically as possible, from the same kitchen set up to the narrow winding staircases. He has hand laid much of the brick and invests his money into slowly adding on to his project. Last time I was there they had a large dome built for the top of the castle that was lying on the grounds waiting to be lifted into place. It's a pretty cool chance to see an "authentic" castle if you can't afford the trip to Europe.

Really more like one and a half stars. I don't know if the Maryland Renfest is just the best thing since sliced bread, but it has greatly colored my idea of a renfest, both what it is and what it could be. The Tennessee Renfest has got to be the most busted up, lame ass, boring, terrible renfest I have ever wasted time and money on. My husband goes to renfest because of his deep love of beer, collectible mugs, and turkey legs. I go to renfest because someone had to be the DD and to indulge in some excellent people watching. Also, I like pottery and blown glass. Mugs at the TRF are more expensive than MRF, and you don't even get a free beer. All of the pottery for sale was a bunch of cups and mugs with ugly faces on them. Nothing I could enjoy in my home, as I prefer my coffee and tea not to stare at me with a retarded look. At MRF, the people watching is excellent. Everything from the sluttiest fairy this side of Mordor, to people who have spent weeks working on armor or dresses, to self-imposed experts who want to school you on dragons and codpieces, to the random people who just want to get trashed and wear cat ears and fox tails. It is always entertaining. At the TRF, it is very strictly family friendly. Nary a corset or codpiece in sight. I saw people turned away for showing too much cleavage. I felt like I was transported to a puritan version of the crappy middle ages, where men and women both are practically in burkas, so as not to offend anyone's delicate sensibilities. Shopping isn't the reason I go to renfest, but it is always nice to get some beeswax candles and a handmade oil lamp. Going to TRF? Abandon all hope of things you wouldn't find in a 14 year old boy's bedroom. And not very much of that, either. Finally, the food. It was meh. A turkey leg is a turkey leg. I got mozzarella sticks that were oily and cold and hit the trash shortly after purchase. They were out of french fries and chips. We spend the whole day when we go to the MRF, we were in and out of the TRF in about 40 minutes. We'll never waste money on that place again.

Rennessaince was actually better arranged this year but there were barely any pirates and there were no belly dancers this year. The food was much beter than in the past as well. I was dissappointed that the chess game and the joust are still the same as always. I actually bought over a thousand dolllars worth of gear over the last 3 years but rode on a motorcycle this time to just enjoy myself. I still wish I. Had picked up a new puppet for my daughter, but then again I know I can get one next year.

Fun at the Ren Fair! Whether you go for the real-life chess pieces hacking at each other, a variety of food and drink (some good, some meh) and other entertainment, you must check out Castle Gwynn. Yes, it is the castle used in Tailor Swift's Love Story video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xg3vE8Ie_E). But how it came to be is a pretty cool story best told by its owner as you tour the grounds and house.

Love this it's absolutely beautiful! I am however bummed we didn't get to tour the whole home - I know only some parts were available, also very appreciative to be let into this families life and it's amazing

Photo of Lauren E.

Terribly organized Ren fair. After waiting an hour to park and another 45 min in line, we clearly weren't getting in anytime soon, so we turned around and walked back to our cars and left.

Photo of Carolyn M.

I definitely enjoyed the Rennaisance Festival far more than I expected to. My daughter had an absolute blast, so that's always fun to watch. She liked the fairies in particular. The food is basic fair food - turkey legs and the like. She ahd kettle corn and a hot dog and seemed more than happy with both (not surprisingly). The prices aren't appalling either. She also did the camel ride, which was a fun $5 photo op. The shows were pretty amusing as well. It was a very well spent morning. The castle is really much better than I expected - it feels quite authentic and definitely impressed my tot in her "princess" phase.

Photo of Tom J.

This place never changes, but it's a great setting for the Ren Fair. I've been to Ren Fairs that were set in much worse settings. Anymore, I only come here because it's the only place to get Delight's Fantasy Art.

Photo of Jim T.

This is a great festival but i gave this 3 stars because as of 2014 they have done no visible improvements to the festival grounds in the last 15 years. It seems every year they advertise new additions to the castle (where the owner lives). So when will the profits be used to improve the festival grounds instead of improving the castle? if it rains you will get soaked because there is one tiny shelter, same as 15 years ago. The paths have not been improved they are loose gravel on steep hills they could have been paved . We made the mistake of bringing a family member in a wheel chair. The paths are impossible for wheel chairs. They should have told us not to come in! And no up close handicap parking. But every year the castle gets better (where the owner lives). The castle is a separate tour and you have to wait in a long line to board a bus to drive to the castle tour. Most of the shows are very good, some performers ask for tips after their show. The jousting is the best of the shows, very realistic. But at the jousting field there is not enough bleachers to handle the crowd and no shelter from the hot sun or rain. Bring sun screen. I recommend it as a great festival but I will not go again until I hear of some improvement to the aging festival grounds. Festivals usually add new shows or improved facilities but this one does not. If they want repeat customers they should make some improvements.

Castle Gwynn Tennessee 3

Photos: © Castle Gwynn – castlegwynn.com

Castle Gwynn, Arrington, Tennessee

Castle Gwynn, Tennessee is a partially complete, fairytale castle with two towers in Arrington, Tennessee – conceived and built by photographer Mike Freeman (see below for a great aerial image of the castle).

Reputedly taking its architectural inspiration from the very picturesque Castell Coch in Wales, Gwynn Castle now plays host to the popular Tennessee Renaissance Festival – during which time, visitors can also have tours of the castle.

From the Castle Gwynn website:

“The vision began in 1970 as high school architecture student Mike Freeman drafted his dream home a “Castle”. His dream, hard work, and sacrifices have led Mike and his wife Jackie on a long journey. The Freeman's share their home with the public weekends in May and Memorial Day as a bonus attraction included in admission to the Tennessee Renaissance Festival”.

For a great interview with Mike and Jackie Freeman, owners of Castle Gwynn, on the Tennessee Home and Farm Website, click here .

castle gwynn tours

Each weekend during the merry month of May, the Tennessee Renaissance Festival takes place near a castle located along State Route 840 (between I-24 and I-65) just south of Nashville in Arrington, TN. It is the only Renaissance festival held on the grounds of a real castle residence in North America. A few homeschool families enjoyed wrapping up our year together with this final field trip!

castle gwynn tours

The castle, called Castell Gwynn (or Castle Gwynn), is a photographer’s real-life home, a replica of a 12th-century Welsh border castle. Mike Freeman opens up parts of his home to Tennessee Renaissance Festival goers for tours (included in the festival admission price), and the castle is available for photography shoots with Freeman Renaissance Portraits. For a fascinating look at the history of Freeman’s “dream home,” read the  Story of Castle Gwynn . Started in 1970, this castle is still a work in progress! In addition to the Castle Gwynn Tour  (where we beheld the RoseDan-Freeman Collection of Weaponry and the Needlework and Tapestry Collection of Imogene Stone),   our children enjoyed such things as…

a camel ride. This camel even poses for photos! David bounced away from this experience saying, “I felt like one of the three wisemen!”

castle gwynn tours

a Birds of Gauntlet show , where a master falconer showed off some rather beautiful birds of prey,

and a Royal Joust  (one of the several entertaining shows available), in which fully-armored knights battled for chivalry and honor upon the tournament field.

castle gwynn tours

Located close by was one of three  man-powered rides  at the festival, the Dragon Joust. (They also enjoyed the Da Vinci Hurlinator and the Flying Carousel, though they were spinning too quickly for us to get a good snapshot!)

We closed our day with a visit to The Gutenberg Press educational exhibit, hosted by Don and Mandi Green of Alabama. Mr. Green made this entire exhibit by hand from his many hours of research into the life of Gutenberg and what Gutenberg’s Printing Press may have looked like. To hear him explain the life and times of Gutenberg, to discover how Mr. Green researched and built all of the materials, and to hear about the primary and secondary resources he used in doing so, was an incredible, unexpected treat for us! What’s more… he volunteers to do this!

castle gwynn tours

Though it is still many years in the making, he is currently working on a similar Da Vinci exhibit for the Alabama Renaissance Faire that takes place in Florence, Alabama every year in October.

Dozens of  skilled artisans  from around the country display their wares amongst an assortment of specialty foods and  Games of Skill .  (For more information visit Artisans, Craft Merchants, Games of Skill, and Rides.)

Some things you might need to know before going:

Our family enjoyed the festival on the “Renaissance Day Out” school day, which takes place annually on the very first day that the festival is open (the Friday before the first weekend of May). If you have children, the school day is the best option, as it is a much more family-friendly environment than on normal Renaissance Faire weekends.  However, if you have children under the age of 5, you will have to find a babysitter on this day because…

“For safety and security reasons, our Renaissance School Day is for students, teachers, school-approved chaperones, and their bus drivers, only. We are unable to accommodate babies and children not yet in Elementary School on our School Day. Babies and children not yet in Elementary School are welcome to attend the festival during a regular festival day, but not on our designated School Day.”

Renaissance School Day requires registration for schools and homeschools alike.

Other handy information: No sandals or flip-flops allowed. You cannot bring food or drink onto the festival grounds, nor can you picnic on the grounds anywhere, but can go back to your car to enjoy lunch.  (While we purchased some good kettle corn on site, we were not quite impressed with the lunch we chose and ended up throwing most of it away.)

We really enjoyed our trip through Covington Glen and the beautiful Castle Gwynn!  If you have any questions, let us know!

Castle Gwynn is a replica of a 12th century Welsh border castle and the private home of Nashville-native Mike Freeman. It's also the location of the annual Tennessee Renaissance Festival each May. When you attend a Festival Day in May, a free tour of the Castle Gwynn gardens and grounds are included with your festival admission (weather permitting).

People actually live in the castle, which was built by the owner. They open it up for tours every weekend in May during the Renaissance Festival. It's worth seeing once but the festival is more fun.

The History of Castle Gwynn

castle gwynn tours

The vision began in 1970 in a high school architecture class, when a senior sketched his dream house. His plans were unlike many of the others: a Medieval Castell, complete with a Great Room and detailed with such flourishes as a hooded fireplace.

Aware that he embarked on a long journey, and with the support of his parents, he began to seek a location for a dream house. In 1976, his inquiries led him to Triune where an older dreamer shared his vision. That’s when John Covington made it possible for Mike to purchase forty acres of land that included a “Castle hill approach.”

Detailed inspirations came from Mike’s time in Wales when he visited Castell Coche (a.k.a Red Castell) which became his prototype. Many fortifications like this were whitewashed in the Middle Ages to appear as one piece of stone and to prevent invasinos in the dark of night  – think of the Tower of London which is also known as the “White Tower – so he chose to make Castell Gwynn the White Castle.

Craftmen, Kenneth Canaday and Master Mason, along with Mike found the perfect combination of expertise and imagination and brought the vision to reality. With his inspirations, the first tower was begun in 1980, with the sceond tower following in 1985.

The crowning glory of the living quarters is the first floor kitchen, which required two years of weekends to mold the 14,000 bricks into sixty brick arches. Tile maker, David Wright, highlighted the feat with his reproduction of the Castell Gwynn coat of arms, in hand-made tiles.

Guided by deft hands of electrician, Fran Paris, special care was taken to conceal modern conveniences within this period structure while keeping it as historically accurate as possible.

One of the focal points of Castell Gwynn is the Great Room on the second floor, a magnificent room for entertaining and festivity. Under a 28’ vaulted ceiling, a balcony with a minstrel gallery leads into the area. The showcase of the second tower is the great hooded fireplace, drafted by Freeman and Canaday, aided by the computer engineering of Cumberland Stoneworks. First sketched in 1970, it is now an architect’s study in cut Indiana limestone.  With love and satisfaction, Mike fished the fireplace with Castell Gwynn coat of arms, which he personally designed.

In 1988, Mike married Jackie Harmon, and thus the first wedding at Castell Gwynn. Recently, she retired after +30 years of educating high school students, Jackie enjoys travel, gardening and coordinating Festival responsibilities.

In 2004, a copper-cover timber frame roof was constructed for the the first tower, while construction for the second tower and roof sections was underway. The frame was constructed by Spencer Turrentine and Brian Stevens. The copper-cover was fashioned by the exclusive coppersmith Leroy Shumake.  The second tower roof was lifted in 2007 and put in place by one of the largest cranes in Nashville. Connecting the two towers is brick and stone section constructed by The Canady Family.

Repairs and resurfacing were needed after damage caused by I-840 construction. Spanning six months, Stover and Sons carefully resurfaced the entire castle exterior with breathtaking results. Worked in metal by Joe Brown, with leaded glass by Jim Hackett, new doors and windows were added to highlight and complete the bright exterior of Castell Gwynn.

Because of the I-840 construction, the Tennessee Renaissance Festival was forced in 1997 to relocate to an adjoining site across New Castle Road. A timber-framed covered bridge greets festival- goers, inviting them to the new hillside festival grounds. The showcase of new Covington Glen is a hammer beam structure, following a roof style typical of great medieval halls throughout Britain and Europe. Tennessee Renaissance Festival is the only festival that is held at a Castell residence.

Inside the Castle Where Taylor Swift's "Love Story" Music Video Was Filmed

Castle Gwynn was designed by the home’s owner as part of an architecture class assignment in high school.

castle gwynn, the sole filming location for taylor swift's "love story" music video, and the site of the tennessee renaissance festival

Given that “Love Story” is a re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet , it only makes sense that the song’s accompanying music video was shot at a countryside castle that could very well be a relic of 16th century Italy. In actuality, the castle is located nowhere near Italy—it’s situated in Arrington, Tennessee, just half an hour from Nashville, the same city where one of Swift’s many homes is located. And although its imposing edifice looks too majestic for this structure to be an actual home, Castle Gwynn is actually a private residence. Fortunately, though, you can still tour the property—but only one month of the year. Every spring, this castle serves as the site of the annual Tennessee Renaissance Festival, which takes place each weekend of May. As part of the festival, Castle Gwynn is open for tours, so Swifties near and far can live out their “Love Story”-inspired dreams—and maybe even wear a satin ball gown to truly channel your inner Taylor Swift.

In the true spirit of a Taylor Swift song, the story behind Castle Gwynn’s creation is essentially a tale about the creative genius of a teenager. The castle’s owner, portrait photographer Mike Freeman, began dreaming up this dwelling in the 1970s, as a high school student sitting in architecture class, after his teacher assigned him and his classmates to design their dream house. So, Freeman came up with Castle Gwynn, a replica of a 12th-century Welsh castle. Some years later, Freeman, along with help from his parents Joe Paul and Bessie Freeman, found the perfect spot to build his dream home—er, castle. Construction on the castle began in 1980, and the rest is history—or should we say, folklore .

castle gwynn, as it appears in taylor swift's "love story" music video

As it turns out, “Love Story” also has ties to another real-life dwelling: Swift’s childhood home in Reading, Pennsylvania. Swift, who is known for her impressive songwriting abilities, penned the track in this very house—the same abode that recently went viral on TikTok after a user revealed that she, along with her family, just so happen to live here. In 2007, a then-17-year-old Taylor Swift wrote the now-eight-times-platinum song on her bedroom floor, in this house—in just 20 minutes, no less. Clearly, both Swift and the owner of Castle Gwynn were very creative during their high school days.

Of course, this may have been the first time a Taylor Swift music video was filmed at a castle, but it was not the last. The video for her 2014 track “Blank Space” was shot at Oheka Castle , a Long Island wedding and event venue with gardens designed by the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted , the creative mind behind Central Park.

Although there is no word yet on whether or not Swift will re-create the original “Love Story” music video for the song’s re-recording, we can only hope that if she does, Castle Gwynn will serve as the backdrop once again.

13 'The Andy Griffith Show' quotes we love

When it comes to classic TV shows Southerners love, "The Andy Griffith Show" is certainly near the top of the list.

Thanks to its iconic brand of wholesome humor, "The Andy Griffith Show" was a favorite throughout the South when it aired in the '60s and still remains popular today. That's likely because while Mayberry might be a fictional town, a lot of of us can see similarities between it and our own hometowns -- as well the cast of characters that live there. Plus, Sheriff Andy Taylor almost always had some words of wisdom to pass on to Opie, and the process, passed 'em on to us too.

So with that in mind, we decided to share some of our favorite quotes from series. Some of them are wise, some of them are funny and some of them manage to be both.

The Authentic Castle Gwynn in Tennessee, a dream 40 years in the making

If you have driven on Interstate 840 south of Nashville you have seen it or most more likely have seen it up close as Taylor Swift’s castle in the “Love Story” video.

The castle is a love story of its own, a labor of love by Mike Freeman, who had a dream 40 years ago and now that dream has turned into a reality, Castle Gwynn.

“After talking about it for 10 years, I either had to do it or become the biggest liar in Tennessee,” he said. photo by The Tennessean

The first five-story tower of Castle Gwynn was begun in 1980. The first-floor kitchen is the crowning glory of this tower. Mike Freeman worked for two years alongside a master mason molding the 14,000 bricks into 60 arches. Tile maker David Wright highlighted the kitchen with his reproduction of the Castle Gwynn coat-of-arms.

The Castle Gwynn also host the annual Tennessee  Renaissance Festival every weekend in May.  The festival has grown to host over 80,000 people for the entire run and become one of the leading Renaissance festivals in the country. It is the only Renaissance Festival hosted at someone’s castle.

“You don’t have to be a millionaire to do these kinds of things, you’ve got to have perseverance.” – Mike Freeman

Tennessee Renaissance Festival: What It’s All About!

Tennessee Renaissance Festival review

Disclosure: I was compensated 2 free tickets to the Tennessee Renaissance Festival. However, all opinions are my own. (Originally posted May 17, 2018)

Tennessee Renaissance Festival

Several times a year I find myself passing a castle just off the road on interstate 840 near Arrington, Tennessee. One day I was curious and, after some investigation, discovered that it was Castle Gwynn and there was a yearly renaissance festival held at the estate. Unsure of what a festival of this type was, I got on their website and checked it out. It looked like a lot of fun, so there I was standing in line at the 33 rd annual Tennessee Renaissance Festival.

Tennessee Renaissance Festival review

I arrived at 915 because I had read that lines to get to the festival can be long. It was a good idea as there were about 100 people already standing in line to enter. I obtained my armband and was handed a brochure for the happenings of the day. I really liked the artwork on its cover and felt it was one of the most informational festival brochures I have seen.

Tennessee Renaissance Festival review

It didn’t take long for me to realize the Tennessee Renaissance Festival was a big hit for all ages. Some young children dressed up as fairies or little dinosaurs. I talked to people who had drove hours just to come to the festival. While standing in line, we enjoyed listening to a man play the bagpipes and checked out the costumes that many people had dressed up in.

Tennessee Renaissance Festival review

This was the line behind me at about 9:45 AM.

At exactly 10 AM the lines opened and people started making their way into the festival area. I had a small bag that was checked by security staff and then I entered. As soon as I made my way to the tree line, there were a group of people welcoming us as they played their musical instruments.

The festival was organized in a circle with a few aisles in between. The first thing I wanted to do was be greeted by the queen so I headed in her direction. The royal court looked stunning in their renaissance apparel despite it being so hot outside.

We also found some fairies that seemed to speak a special fairy language.

We continued to make our way under the trees along the path lined with handmade goods and foods. The first thing I purchased was a pina colada fruit smoothie. It was pretty yummy!

Tennessee Renaissance Festival review

I was surprised to find there were old fashioned rides for people to enjoy. The Da Vinci’s Hurlinator reminded me of a modern day scrambler except participants were required to push and pull a lever in front of them. The harder they worked, the faster the ride became.

Da Vinci's Hurlinator

I also saw a swing that looked relaxing, if you could handle going in circles. My niece did the Dragon Joust ride where she was placed on a play horse that was set up like a zip line. When released, she had to stab the dragon with her sword as she zoomed past it.

Castle Gwynn

Tickets included a free tour of the gardens and first floor of Gwynn Castle from 11-3PM. So, we stopped for some fried snickers bars and head towards the exit area of the festival where a line had formed to take a bus over to the castle. We were able to get on the 3 rd bus and took the short ride over to the castle. We entered into a gate and made our way to the castle grounds.

Castle Gwynn tour

We were first met by a member of the sheriff’s department who directed us further. We were ushered to benches set up by a sign that read, “Castle Gwynn Tour Begins Here.” This is where Mike Freeman, the owner and designer of Castle Gwynn, told us the story of why he built the castle along with a few details.

Castle Gwynn

Freeman started building the castle in 1980 after deciding in his high school architecture class that it would be nice to live in a castle. Over the years, through hard work, determination, and help from others, he has made improvements to the castle and made it bigger. In fact, there are current plans for 4 more copper roofs to be added to the towers of the Great Hall.

castle gwynn tours

Inside the Great Hall area were 2 parked cars, one being a bat mobile!

castle gwynn tours

I continued the tour into a sun room that lead to the lovely kitchen.

castle gwynn tours

Here, 60 brick arches are formed to display the lovely renaissance décor. We were told that it took weekends for 2 years to build the arches and that there were no blueprints, just the design in his head of what he wanted.

castle gwynn tours

Next, I made my way around the castle for a view of the lovely Gwynn Castle.

castle gwynn tours

I made my way up to the first floor of the castle where a beautiful chandelier was hung surrounded by more beautifully designed brick work.

castle gwynn tours

During Freeman’s welcome speech, he mentioned that it is good luck to touch the palm of a sword. However, most swords are found behind glass in museums. Here at Castle Gwynn there is a sword that can be touched to get that extra luck!

castle gwynn tours

If you make it to the festival, make sure to stop by Castle Gwynn. I highly recommend touring the house and feel like you will be missing out if you don’t. Even if you have visited in the past, Gwynn Castle is ever changing. Admission is included in the price of your ticket to the Tennessee Renaissance Festival.

Back to the Tennessee Renaissance Festival grounds.

Back at the festival, we continued to make our way around checking out the amazing art, tasting the yummy food, and enjoying the shows. There really is something for any age. We watched a magician performing his tricks and a man juggle items with fire and walk on stilts.

Tennessee Renaissance Festival Vendors

There are pirate sword fights but, we saw one of the pirates being quite humorous while not engaged in these shows. He gave us a giggle as he walked up behind an unknown spectator and placed something in his hood. Next, he went up to an officer and acted as he was going to do the same thing to his collar but decided against it at the last moment. His mannerisms were quite funny.

Tennessee Renaissance Festival 2018

I noticed several children eager to attend the Queen Elizabeth’s Knighting ceremony. Here each child kneeled before the queen as she gently tapped them on each shoulder and forehead with her sword. After doing this, they were made a knight and given a certificate to remember the moment. I saw so many smiling faces during this activity.

The birds of prey shows were very interesting for both young and old.

I feel the highlight of the day goes to the Royal Joust. During this event, two knights dressed in armor battle towards each other on their horses attempting to become the winner of the jousting.

We did a lot of shopping and browsing at the amazing hand made crafts available for purchase. There were all kinds of renaissance style costumes and souvenirs. I found a fan for only $3 that was so cute and was perfect for the hot day.
