CHONBURI, Thailand (AP) — Peiyun Chien shot an 8-under 64 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the LPGA Tour event in Thailand, the first of three tournaments on the LPGA’s Asian swing.

The 33-year-old Taiwanese player had an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey on the Siam Country Club Old Course at Chonburi southeast of Bangkok. Chien is winless on the LPGA Tour but has had 10 career top-10 finishes, including two top-five finishes in her last six starts in 2023.

“I wish I could play like this every day because golf is tough,” said Chien, who is 113th in world rankings. “I had my best finish last year and I tried to play safer second shots and just tried to make one putt, not too aggressive.”

Sei Young Kim, the 2020 Women’s PGA Championship winner, shot 66 and was in second place. The group tied for third with 67s included Brooke Henderson, Patty Tavatanakit, Jenny Shin and Madelene Sagstrom. Jin Young Ko and Japan’s Erika Hara shot 68 and were in a group four strokes behind Chien.

Defending champion Lilia Vu had a 73.

LPGA tournaments are also scheduled over the next two weeks in Singapore and China.

The silver lining to this story is that Mo has successfully crowd funded in excess of US$ 50,000 which will enable him to stay on in the USA for the remainder of 2022 to contest the Korn Ferry Tour / Q School and allow him to continue on his journey and fulfil his dream of playing on the PGA Tour.

It was our pleasure to have Mo participate, he is a very nice well-mannered young gentlemen, with a most promising future ahead of him in golf...

Over 25 million Americans play golf.

For many golfers, owning a home on a golf course or near to their pick of courses is the ultimate retirement dream.

And even if you’re not among the 25 million plus Americans who play golf, you can still take advantage of all the top amenities (think spas, swimming pools, restaurants…) that golf resorts offer.

Plus, they’re often located on the coast—so there’s plenty for non-golfers to enjoy.

Here's my pick of destinations for golfers looking to Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America…

1. Portugal

At the recent World Golf Awards, Portugal not only won the title of Europe’s Best Golf Destination but also took the crown as the World’s Best Golf Destination.

Portugal's Algarve is home to dozens of impressive courses.

For the best selection of courses, head to the Algarve on Portugal’s southern coast. Here you’ll find more than 30 courses including the Jack Nicklaus designed Monte Rei Resort and the Arnold Palmer designed Dom Pedro Victoria course.

Finally The Internet Found The Backrooms

This sprawling kauai resort boasts 50 lush acres and a stunning saltwater lagoon, ‘oppenheimer’ among movies coming to streaming on prime video in june.

The most popular months to play golf in Portugal are April through June and September and October. Green fees range from $40 to $215.

When it comes to local golfing etiquette, slow play is generally frowned upon in Portugal so be sure to keep pace with the group ahead of you and try to choose a course that matches your playing style and ability.

Most clubs also have a smart-casual dress code with soft spike shoes, socks, and collared shirts being basic requirements. Be sure to check with your chosen course ahead of time.

2. Thailand

Thailand is a world-class golfing destination where you’ll find over 200 courses. In Bangkok, the Amata Spring Country Club offers a championship level course which features a “floating green” hole in the club’s vast lake. The club also has golf villas available as monthly rentals.

Outside of the capital, the coastal resort of Hua Hin is a mecca for golfers. The summer home of Thailand’s royal family since the 1920s, this town offers a wide selection of restaurants, internationally accredited medical care, and at least nine golf courses in close proximity including the 27-hole Black Mountain Golf Club, host of multiple Asian PGA events.

Hua Hin's Springfield golf course, Thailand.

Also on offer here are the Jack Nicklaus designed Springfield Golf Club and the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, Thailand’s oldest 18-hole international standard course which dates back to 1924.

The best time of year to play golf in Thailand is between November and March when temperatures are milder and humidity lower. Green fees run from $40 to $160.

When golfing in Thailand it’s compulsory to take a caddie and, if the course requires a cart, the caddie will typically do the driving. Caddie fees range from $10 to $25 and it’s expected you tip in the same range.

Mexico boasts excellent courses on both its Caribbean and Pacific coasts. From mountains to oceans and deserts, Mexico’s more than 200 courses cater to every golfing desire.

In Cabo San Lucas, you’ll find several world-class courses including The Dunes at Diamante, designed by 20-time PGA tour winner Davis Love III, and offering breath-taking ocean views and magnificent dunes.

The beautiful Diamante Dunes course, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Puerto Los Cabos is home to three courses designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus as well as a practice facility, and the option to book lessons with a PGA professional.

Right across the gulf from Cabo San Lucas is Mazatlán, our favorite city in Mexico. Golf is a big draw for visitors and expats in this colonial city which is home to a Robert Trent Jones course right on the Pacific and a David Fleming course at the marina.

Green fees in Mexico run from $30 to $375 and November to April is when golfing conditions are best here.

While many stars exited too soon, the 2024 u.s. women's open still deserves your attention – here's why, share this article.

LANCASTER, Pa. – This is not the leaderboard many imagined at the start of this week. Not that a player like Minjee Lee, a two-time major winner and one of the LPGA’s premiere ball-strikers, is a surprise. It’s more about who’s not playing this weekend in the 79th U.S. Women’s Open , superstars like Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang, Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson all failing to rise to the test provided by this William Flynn gem.

But take heart! There are reasons to fall in love with this leaderboard at Lancaster Country Club, where the fans have come out in droves for what the local paper deemed the Olympic Games of this beautifully quaint community.

U.S. Women’s Open:  Photos  |  How to watch  |  Leaderboard

Dig a little deeper and discover all there is to enjoy about this eclectic board, where only five players are under par:

T.1 Wichanee Meechai, -5

asian pga tour thailand

The most unknown player on this board by a mile is 31-year-old Meechai, who said just yesterday that she didn’t think she had what it took to win on the LPGA. Meechai holds a share of the lead with Minjee Lee and Andrea Lee at 5 under. Only five players in the field are under par through 54 holes. Yuka Saso, who sits alone in fifth, is three strokes ahead of next two players on the board in a share of sixth.

When Golf Digest’s Shane Ryan asked Meechai during Saturday’s press conference what pressure does to her, she said her brain stops working and she goes blank.

“You cannot feel your body,” Meechai said. “You cannot feel your brain. You cannot feel your hands. So I just hate it.

“But you’re not going to be able to get rid of it. I think the best part for the three rounds for me, it’s like I kind of managed to get along with the pressure.”

There aren’t many pros in the game who would give such a raw and honest answer about anything at any time, let alone the night before the final round of a major.

Meechai’s father, Wanchai, works for the Asian Tour and runs all the tournaments for the Thai LPGA. The Thailand golf community will be up all night on Sunday to see if Meechai can join good friend Ariya Jutanugarn as the only Thai players to win the U.S. Women’s Open.

Meechai’s manager, Pennapa “K.P.” Pulsawath, told her to stay off social media this week. Meechai, who goes by the nickname “Jan” on tour, received a slew of texts but didn’t answer any of them, only calling mom, who hoped she could stay patient on the course.

As Meechai struggled earlier this year, missing three straight cuts, she told her manager she might be too old to keep competing on the LPGA. Pulsawath told her to go home and visit her mom, who’d had heart surgery earlier in the year, and recharge. If she still felt that way later in the year, they could sign up for JLPGA Q-School and give it a whirl.

“For me, I aways believe she could be on this tour,” said Pulsawath.

The idea of going to Japan just freed Meechai’s head up a bit.

Meechai’s swing coach, Chris Mayson, has been telling her for two years that can be a top-30 player.

“She just never believed it,” Mayson said.

Perhaps that’s changing.

T-1. Minjee Lee, -5

While many players with a late tee time at a major might feel like time stands still, the uber-chill Lee actually said she feels like time “goes by pretty quickly.”

“I don’t really overthink too much,” she said, “and I’ve done it for quite a while now. I have one U.S. Open under my belt. I’ll maybe watch some TV, maybe read a little.”

What’s she reading? Interestingly, the autobiography of another U.S. Open champion, Andre Agassi’s “Open.”

Lee shot 4-under 66 on Moving Day, buoyed by an eagle on the par-5 seventh. Her brother, Min Woo Lee, plays on the PGA Tour and is known as “The Chef.” Fans at Lancaster yelled the occasional “Let her cook!” in Minjee’s direction as a nod to little bro.

T-1. Andrea Lee, -5

asian pga tour thailand

Growing up in California, Lee dabbled in a little bit of everything. Figure skating, tae kwon do, skiing, tap dancing, soccer, golf. The athletic Lee never said no to anything and, according to her father James, picked up all sports quickly.

“Even like skiing or snowboarding,” said James, “we got her a couple lessons and boom, she was up on the mountain while other kids were still trying to put their boots on. Everything came fast for her.”

Around age eight, it became too much and she had to pick one. Lee chose golf and won 50 junior titles in four years.

At Stanford, she won nine titles, a school record that has since been broken by Rose Zhang (12). At the end of 2019, Lee went to LPGA Q-School and spent her rookie year on tour during the abbreviated 2020 COVID-19 season.

While everything seemed to come easily for Lee early on, there was an adjustment period when she came to the LPGA. There was a time during the 2021 season when Lee, who’d missed the cut in eight of her first 10 starts, wanted to quit on a tournament in Hawaii where she was battling a two-way miss.

But the soft-spoken Lee, who carries a fighting spirit, didn’t withdraw. She dug deep and clawed her way out, winning for the first time the following season and then qualifying for the Solheim Cup team last year.

“I think coming out of college, I really put a lot of pressures and expectations on myself to play really well after having a pretty successful amateur career,” she said, “and I think there was a really big growth curve, learning curve I should say, those first couple of years. I kind of struggled a little bit.

“But I had to figure out what works best for me and not look to the top players in the world, what they were doing, and just focus on me.”

4. Hinako Shibuno, -3

asian pga tour thailand

Those who haven’t seen “The Smiling Cinderella” compete are in for a treat. When the Japanese star won the 2019 AIG Women’s British Open in her major championship debut, fans were high-fiving her along the rope lines like she was an old friend. Shibuno, who was given the Cinderella nickname by Japanese media, can light up a gallery like few players in the game.

It seems fitting that the Lancaster community gets to enjoy Shibuno’s joy-filled presence late on a Sunday, for they embraced 2015 champion In Gee Chun in a way few major champions have ever experienced. Chun returns to Lancaster annually and established an education foundation that gives scholarships to those who work at the club.

It’s been a down year for Shibuno, who currently ranks 192nd in the world. She’d missed the cut in six of nine starts coming into this week, and decided to switch to a softer shaft for her clubs. She was tinkering with it all the way up til the first round.

“I myself got so surprised that I made seven birdies,” she said through an interpreter of her third-round 66, noting that she was able to be more aggressive.

The Smiling Cinderella trails by two going into the final round and looks to make her second LPGA title a second major.

5. Yuka Saso, -2

asian pga tour thailand

Saso’s life changed overnight when she left The Olympic Club a U.S. Women’s Open champion three years ago. Only 19 years old at the time, the wide-eyed Saso accepted LPGA membership and entered into rock star territory back home in the Philippines, where they put her face on a commemorative stamp. Even her hero, Rory McIlroy, was giving her shout-outs. Saso modeled her swing after the four-time major champion.

Saso held dual citizenship in the Philippines and Japan but was required by Japanese law to pick one by her 22nd birthday. She now competes under the Japanese flag, and, like Shibuno, is still waiting on a second LPGA title.

The life upheaval that followed her victory at Olympic proved as difficult as one might expect.

“Everything just happened too quickly,” said Saso, who trails by three entering Sunday. “I was young, and I think I had a hard time catching up on the speed that my life was changing. But I think with that experience I was able to mature more and grow up a little bit faster.”

Five Things to Know About the U.S. Women’s Open

Gabriela Ruffels

The 79th edition of the U.S. Women’s Open, the longest-running major championship in women’s golf, gets underway on Thursday at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Penn. The major championship features a purse of $12 million with Ally coming on board as presenting sponsor of the major championship earlier this year. Here’s a closer look at five things you need to know about the season’s second major championship.

The U.S. Women’s Open presented by Ally features a field of 156 players that features a who’s who of players who have already hoisted a major trophy. Nelly Korda, the two-time major champion and current Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1, headlines the field in pursuit of her seventh win of the 2024 season. She’s joined in Lancaster by major champions Celine Boutier, Ashleigh Buhai, Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko and Hannah Green, just to name a few. Green is the only other multiple winner this season on the LPGA Tour, earning two victories at the HSBC Women’s World Championship and the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro. Eight past champions of the U.S. Women’s Open will also tee it up, including Brittany Lang, Ariya Jutanugarn, Jeongeun Lee6, A Lim Kim, Yuka Saso, Minjee Lee, Allisen Corpuz and In Gee Chun, who was the winner the last time the championship was held at Lancaster Country Club in 2015. Chun’s victory was her first on the LPGA Tour, and since that win, she has maintained a relationship with the Lancaster community by establishing an educational foundation in partnership with the club that helps to provide scholarships to local families.

There were 1,897 entries received for this year’s U.S. Women’s Open, just over a hundred shy of the record of more than 2,000 entries submitted last year, with the championship being staged for the first time at Pebble Beach Golf Links. In the end, just over 60 players advanced from 26 qualifying sites, having outlasted a 36-hole gauntlet to earn a coveted spot in the field at Lancaster Country Club alongside those who were previously exempt. Notable qualifiers for this year’s U.S. Women’s Open include Gabi Ruffels, who finished as medalist at her qualifying site to earn a spot in the field for her fifth U.S. Women’s Open. The rookie has been on a run of good form lately and comes to Pennsylvania off back-to-back top-three finishes on the LPGA Tour. Other notable qualifiers include Moriya Jutanugarn, Sydnee Michaels, Caroline Masson and Lucy Li, who first competed in the U.S. Women’s Open at the age of 11.

Lancaster Country Club is a hidden gem amongst the rota of major championship venues, and beginning Thursday, it hosts the U.S. Women’s Open for only the second time. The course, which was the venue for the championship in 2015, will challenge players with a complete test of golf. The William Flynn design features a variety of par 4s, distinct par 3s and just two par 5s. This second-shot golf course will play to 6,583 yards for the championship, exactly 100 yards longer than it was in 2015, and to a par 70. The biggest change from 2015 can be seen at the par-5 13th hole, which was lengthened by 30 yards and has seen the addition of four new bunkers.

Corpuz Defends

Allisen Corpuz became not just a Rolex First-Time Winner but also a major champion with her breakout victory in the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in 2023. Corpuz closed with a final-round 3-under, 69 to win by three strokes in the first women’s major to be staged at Pebble Beach. Corpuz, who became the first American to win her national championship since Brittany Lang in 2016, took home $2 million for her victory along with the Mickey Wright Medal and the Horton S. Semple Trophy. But since Corpuz earned her maiden victory at the U.S. Women’s Open, she’s struggled to recapture the magic that propelled her to major glory. Following her win, she finished runner-up in her next start and picked up a tie for sixth in the final major of the 2023 season, the AIG Women’s Open. This year, Corpuz has recorded just a single top-10 finish, a tie for eighth that came at the HSBC Women's World Championship.

Korda Chasing Major No. 3

Nelly Korda arrives at the second major championship of the season in pursuit of not just her seventh victory of the year but also a third career major victory. Korda captured her fifth consecutive win of the season at the year’s first major, The Chevron Championship, and will be riding high on the momentum of a sixth win in her last start at the Mizuho Americas Open. At a major venue like Lancaster Country Club, which puts a premium on hitting fairways and greens, Korda will be tough to beat as she leads the Tour in greens in regulation, putts per green in regulation and scoring average. Korda is competing in her 10th U.S. Women’s Open, and she has two top-10 results in the event. She did not compete at Lancaster in 2015.
