"There is nowhere quite like Greece, there is something here for everyone; you can walk in the footsteps of the Ancient Greeks, dance the Zorba while indulging in a Greek feast or get lost in a maze of the whitewashed houses of Mykonos as the sun sets"

Evana, Travel Director

Explore the ancient capital of Athens

Often dubbed the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens was arguably the most influential city of ancient times. Contemporary meets antique in a city both drenched in world history and brimming with a modernity. You’ll discover thermal lakes, buzzing beachside neighborhoods and some of the world’s oldest ruins.

Visit the ancient Olympic site in Olympia

The birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia first became known to the world in 776 BC, when the very first games were held. Visit this world-famous ancient site that was also a holy place of worship for Zeus, the Greek god, surrounded by lush forestry in a rolling valley.

See the ruins of the Temple of Apollo

Reachable by a day trip from Athens, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was rebuilt numerous times before settling into the historic site it inhabits today. Marvel at the remaining sandstone columns and decayed limestone that remind us of the past it endured over many thousands of years.

Dine 'Meze Style' in Psyri, Athens

Most travel guides will have you visiting Plaka for Greek food and nightlife, but authentic eateries are best found in the nearby neighborhood of Psiri. Between no-frills bars and dusty antique shops, you will find traditional mezze-style eateries and a boutique energy that pays tribute to Greece’s culinary heritage.

Visit Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Meteora

One of Greece’s most popular tourist attractions, it’s easy to see why so many flock to the spectacular rock formations of Meteora. Marvel at talents of both man and Mother Nature at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Byzantine monasteries that float around the summits.

Our top 5 things to do in Greece

Food and history form the basis of Greek culture and play a big role in all our trips to Greece. With Trafalgar, we'll showcase the best this country has to offer from sun up to dreamy sundown.

Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is found at the foot of the western world’s most important ancient site. Unpeel layers of history as you wander the halls of the past and gaze up at the dazzling site itself through glass walls. Allow yourself at least half a day to take in the enormity of this museum.

Remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace

Tours in Greece are scarcely complete without a visit to this iconic archeological site, where you will find the remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace, one of the world’s best-preserved fortresses. Glance up and admire unrivalled panoramic views of the countryside, once the Greek civilisation’s major military centres.

Athens War Museum

Opening its doors in 1975, the Athens War Museum documents the country’s past conflicts and military artefacts. In honor of those who fought for Greece’s freedom, the museum showcases four grand floors of past-to-present history. History enthusiasts will find no shortage of awe within these walls.

Best museums in Greece

Though often visited for Greece island hopping, the enchantment of this Mediterranean jewel extends beyond the sapphire waters. With Trafalgar, you’ll venture under the layers of Greek culture by visiting its many fascinating museums.

Standing its ground as one of Greece’s most famous main meals, moussaka is a wholesome and delectable combination of eggplant, ground meat, onion and béchamel sauce. Try this dish a few times during your visit; there are family variations that get passed through generations.

Souvlaki is street food at its very best. A simple preparation of skewered meats and vegetables, it’s the flavoring that makes this snack a pride of the nation. For the most authentic souvlaki, sample if from a street vendor wrapped up with condiments, salad and thick hot chips.

Kolokythokeftedes

The small fried balls of kolokythokeftedes can most aptly be compared to zucchini fritters with fetta cheese. Often ordered in summer with a side of tzatziki, these delicious bites are a great starter to any meal. Learn from the locals and snack on kolokythokeftedes alongside a glass of wine in the warm afternoon sun.

Best food in Greece

From an array of antipasto dips like taramasalata and tzatziki, to heavier main courses of grilled meats and fresh fish, Greek cuisine is internationally recognized for its deliciousness. Trafalgar will take you to the heart of Greece’s culinary traditions, each mouthful and mealtime an utter treat.

What to pack for Greece

People packing for a tour

Long, breathable pants or skirts

Often warm all year around, and extremely hot during summer, long, light clothing is ideal for daytime sightseeing in Greece – particularly when visiting historic religious sites that require modest attire.

A stainless steel water bottle

Whether you’re basking ocean-side beneath the hot sun or trekking the ancient monuments of this distinct country, you’ll need to stay hydrated. Stainless steel bottles keep your water cold for eight hours while treading lightly on the environment.

Walking shoes

Comfortable shoes are a must when you’re out from morning to night. Choose sturdy, open-toe walking sandals or closed toe sneakers to ensure you can walk effortlessly for hours.

A wide-lens camera

From coasts spanning miles of sea to some of the world’s most spectacular ruins, Greece is bursting with scenes you will want to remember forever. A wide-lens camera will make it easier to capture the views.

Sun protection

Whether it’s SPF50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed sun hat or long-sleeved clothing, some form of sun protection is crucial when visiting this popular summer vacation spot.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

More information about greece.

It’s time to sip a glass of ouzo and immerse yourself in the treasures of Greece, the Cradle of Western Civilization. Nowhere else on earth offers the culture, climate and coastlines of Greece and this beautiful country is the birthplace of Western philosophy , democracy and the Olympic Games. A holiday to Greece suits all kinds of travellers, whether it’s the endless history, delicious cuisine or sun-soaked beaches that tempt you.

Situated in southeastern Europe , on the southernmost tip of the Balkan Peninsula , Greece shares land borders with Turkey , Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria . The surrounding seas of the Aegean , Ionian and Mediterranean are dotted with Greece’s paradise islands, of which there are 227 inhabited islands. Holidays to the Greek Islands are always popular, with Crete, Santorini, Lesbos and Mykonos among the best-known islands, although there are hundreds of little-known islands to discover on a tour of Greece . Furthermore, the romantic charm of these islands, as portrayed in the blockbuster movie Mamma Mia makes a honeymoon to Greece a popular choice among newlyweds. The only question is which Greek Island to visit!

If you’d rather stick to the mainland, you’ll find plenty of unspoilt beaches along the whooping 16,000 kilometres of coastline. Although Greece’s gorgeous Mediterranean climate is well-suited for an all-inclusive beach holiday, the interior of the country is filled with picturesque mountain scenery, perfect for more active pursuits. In fact, 80% of Greece is mountainous, where you’ll find the famous Mount Olympus , home of the Greek gods.

In the ancient capital of Athens , you’ll find bucket-list sights such as the Acropolis , the Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysus , where you can walk in the footsteps of legendary Athenians such as Plato , Pericles and Aristotle.

There are infinite things to see and do in Greece ; it could take a lifetime to truly experience the richness of this ancient civilization. Endless cultural gems, warm hospitality and stunning natural scenery make travel to Greece eternally popular. From island-hopping in the Aegean to consulting the mysterious Oracle in Delphi or exploring the magical monasteries of Meteora , the possibilities are endless on a trip to Greece.

The best time to travel to Greece for a beach holiday is during the summer months when you can enjoy long, sunny days and balmy evenings. Travelling to Greece for sightseeing is recommended in the spring and autumn , before the crowds of summer and when the temperatures are better suited to exploring the country’s cultural delights.

History of Greece

The history of Greece is tightly bound with the history of Western civilization as a whole. Ancient Greece is credited with the creation of democracy, mathematics and the Olympic Games and stories of this mighty civilization have captured our imaginations for centuries.

The Golden Age of Ancient Greece took place around the 5th and 4th centuries BC . During this important period, Greece was divided into city-states, known as polis, the most famous of which were Athens, Sparta, Delphi and Thebes , among others. Each polis had its own laws, languages, customs and governments and there were often conflicts and struggles between the states for domination of Greece , known as Hellas at the time. The legacy of this period can be seen in some of the country’s most inspiring monuments, such as the Parthenon in Athens , the Sanctuary of Delphi and the ruins of Olympia . A holiday to Greece is incomplete without visiting at least a few of the ancient sites from this Golden Age.

Following the Macedonian takeover and death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC , Greece soon came under the control of the ever-growing Roman Empire . The days of the organised polis were over, but self-governance was still allowed by the Romans , although there was strict supervision. Nevertheless, the Romans admired the intricacies of Greek culture and the customs and language of Greece travelled far and wide across Europe thanks to the Roman Empire. The Roman Agora and Hadrian’s Library in Athens were both constructed during this era, and are must-see sights on a tour of Greece.

After the split of the Roman Empire , Greece became part of the Byzantine Empire for several centuries. You’ll find a number of Byzantine Churches throughout Greece , recognisable by their domed roofs. In 1453 the Fall of Constantinople marked the end of the Byzantine Empire and Greece came under the control of the Ottomans. It was not until 1821 that Greece declared its independence, although struggles and conflicts over territory continued for many years.

In the 20th-century, Germany occupied Greece during the Second World War and in 1944 a complicated and violent civil war took hold of the country. Finally, in 1975 , Greece became a democracy once more and it later joined the European Union in 1981.

Nature in Greece

Greece is a perfect travel destination. As well as legendary historical sites and vibrant national culture, Greece is also filled with unmissable natural wonders. On a trip to Greece , you’ll find pristine beaches, ancient caves, canyons, lush forests, beautiful waterfalls, rugged mountain ranges, endless vineyards, and of course, plenty of olive groves!

From the snow-capped mountains of the north to the white-sand beaches of the Cyclades Islands , Greece offers a cornucopia of natural beauty and countless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Some of the most breathtaking natural wonders to explore on a Greece holiday include the magical underground lake in the Cave of Melissani on the island of Kefalonia, the giant rock formations and monasteries of Meteora in central Greece and the azure Blue Caves of Zakynthos.

Mount Olympus National Park , home to the highest peak in the country, is a haven for walkers with plenty of hiking routes, waterfalls and caves to explore. If your tour of Greece takes you to the historic island of Crete , be sure to explore Samaria Gorge National Park . A biosphere reserve, this magical 16-kilometre long gorge was carved out by a small river and offers all kinds of exciting walking and climbing routes along its narrow pathways and dramatic cliff faces.

Greece is also home to some of the most diverse wildlife in Europe, including brown bears, wildcats, jackals and wolves, not forgetting the sea turtles and dolphins you’ll find around the shores of the Greek Islands.

Greek Culture

With thousands of years of history, Greek culture is rich and vibrant, filled with traditions, music, folklore, delicious food and socialising. In fact, socialising is a pillar of modern Greek culture, which you can observe on the terraces of any cafe, where groups of all ages take time out of their days to catch up over coffee or a refreshing glass of ouzo , the famous Greek aperitif.

Greek culture comes to life at the dining table and the timeless trinity of feta cheese, olives and olive oil are sure to leave your taste buds enlivened. Washed down with a generous glass of local wine, Greek cuisine is an important part of Greek culture and certainly a highlight of any trip to Greece.

Of all the elements of Greek culture, language is perhaps the most important. Known for its unique alphabet, the Greek heard today is directly derived from Ancient Greek , something the locals are fiercely proud of as it has endured for millennia.

If you travel to Greece you might be fortunate enough to experience some of the vibrant cultural festivals that are scattered across the annual calendar. Most festivals are closely linked to Greek Orthodox traditions , but you’ll find different regional celebrations, dances and folk music throughout Greece.

On a holiday to Greece , you’ll appreciate the laid-back way of life. You’ll likely find that life moves at a slower pace, especially in the Greek Islands , giving you plenty of time to enjoy the delights of this beautiful country.

Travel to Greece , the Cradle of Western Civilization, where nature, culture and history combine to create a one-of-a-kind destination. From the mysterious ruins of Knossos in Crete to the windmills of Santorini , there are endless treasures to explore on a trip to Greece.

Travel tips for Greece trips

From the snow-capped mountains of the north to the sandy beaches of the south, Greece has something to offer everyone. Ancient cities, picturesque islands, and a stunning coastline along the Aegean Sea await. Whether you’re looking for a place to explore history, dive into local culture, or relax on the shore, Greece offers tempting options for travelers. On our guided tours of Greece, you’ll find itineraries for travelers of all types, making it easy to find the one that fits your interests.

  • Meteora, Athens, or Delphi. Greece is home to some of the most important historical sites in the world, including the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Temple of Zeus. These sites offer a glimpse into the ancient world and its rich culture. If you’re a history buff, our Week in Ancient Greece: Athens, Delphi & Olympia tour is right up your alley.
  • The Greek Islands or Pelion. If sunshine and coastlines are more your style, island-hopping in the Aegean Sea is a good option for you. Take two weeks to explore all they have to offer on our  The Greek Islands: Mykonos, Santorini & Crete tour .
  • Mykonos and Santorini. For first-time visitors and those who only have a week to get away, our shorter Greece tours are a great way to go. Our  A Week in Greece: Athens, Mykonos & Santorini tour introduces you to the highlights of each location—and leaves you with vacation days to spare.

A  Greek Islands tour  has something for every type of traveler—beach lovers, foodies, hikers, and history buffs. Here are five of the best islands to visit in Greece (you can learn more about them in our guide to the Greek Islands ):

  • Mykonos. A favorite of jet setters, Mykonos has all the ingredients for a good time: gorgeous beaches, bohemian-chic restaurants, and lots of options for nightlife and entertainment.
  • Santorini. The beaches here are famous not for their golden sand, but for their black-and-red-rock sand. Head to the hilltop town of Oia at sunset for the quintessential Santorini experience.
  • Paxos. If you’re a beach lover, Paxos has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The sand is soft and white, and the water is clear, making it perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving.
  • Naxos. Looking for stunning beaches, lush vegetation, and traditional villages? Naxos offers it all. The village of Apiranthos is known for its whitewashed houses and cobbled streets.
  • Crete. The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete offers beautiful beaches, scenic hikes, and interesting history. It’s also considered the culinary hub of the islands.

There’s no question about it: This country always makes a great getaway. In recent years, especially, it’s become a clear favorite, with Greece travel packages in high demand. Summer is the most popular time for visitors, and the islands tend to become crowded with sun-seeking adventurers then.

If you have the flexibility to travel at other times of the year, the best time to visit Greece is in the off-season. When temperatures are cooler, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the true essence of the country. Check out one of our Greece guided tours,  A Week in Ancient Greece: Athens, Delphi & Olympia , which is specifically designed to make the most of the cooler months.

Certain islands aren’t accessible during the winter, but this time of year is excellent for visiting the mainland. Hop between Mykonos and Santorini in the fall and spring for the ultimate Greek getaway.

In a land of rich history, rugged ruins, and remarkable beauty, the must-see destinations on our trips to Greece focus heavily on ancient attractions. But it’s not all about history. The towns, cities, and islands where you’ll find the top attractions offer exciting venues to explore, both old and new.

  • The Acropolis. One of the most important archaeological sites in the world and a masterpiece of classical Greek architecture, the Acropolis is home to some of the most iconic landmarks in Greece, including the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike. Its museum houses more than 3,000 artifacts, from sculptures to jewelry, and offers stunning views of the Acropolis and the city of Athens.
  • Ancient Agora. Originally the center of political, social, and religious life in Athens, this site was home to significant buildings, including temples, stoas, and law courts (the trial of Socrates took place here). Today, it’s a popular tourist destination featuring museums, archaeological sites, shops, and restaurants.
  • Temple of Olympian Zeus. One of the largest temples in the ancient world, this colossal temple in Athens is dedicated to Zeus. While only 15 of the original 104 marble columns remain standing, the ruins are among the most impressive in Greece.
  • Panathenaic Stadium. The site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and the 2004 Summer Olympics, this ancient stadium in Athens, made entirely of marble, was built in the fourth century B.C. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also a popular venue for concerts and other events.
  • Acropolis of Lindos.  Set on a high cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea on the island of Rhodes, the Acropolis of Lindos is a beautiful and well-preserved archaeological site featuring a number of temples and other ruins.
  • Palace of Knossos.  This ancient palace located on Crete, with its amazing frescoes and artifacts from the Minoan civilization, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece.
  • Samariá Gorge. A national park located on the island of Crete, Samariá Gorge is one of the longest gorges in Europe and a popular destination for hiking and camping.
  • Meteora monasteries. This group of monasteries, located in central Greece, is built on top of towering sandstone pillars and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
  • Santorini.  The island of Santorini is one of the most popular destinations on trips to Greece. It is known for its stunning caldera, whitewashed buildings, and blue-domed churches.

Want to know where to go in Greece? Here are six Greek hotspots that belong on your bucket list .

This is a country that truly has something to offer everyone. On our tours of Greece, you’ll hit the highlights but also have the opportunity to enjoy some under-the-radar experiences—like these five unique places to visit . On or off the beaten path, here are some unique experiences you can have in Greece:

  • Travel to remote and charming villages, like Kalambaka in central Greece
  • Take a cooking class and learn how to make traditional Greek dishes
  • Go on a wine tasting tour of Santorini or another Greek island
  • Hike to the top of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece
  • Kick back on one of Greece’s beautiful beaches

  • Swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea

We recommend you spend at least six days in Greece. While our most popular Greece tours run for nine days or more, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one or two cities or islands.

There are many popular activities to experience on our tours of Greece, considering the country’s rich history and culture. Some of the most popular things to do include:

  • Visiting historical sites.  Greece is home to countless historical sites, such as Delphi and the ancient Acropolis, as well as Olympia, where the Olympic Games were born.
  • Exploring the countryside.  Mountain villages, scenic peninsulas, and pine forests make Greece’s beautiful countryside a pleasure to discover.
  • Enjoying the food.  Greek food is famous for its use of fresh, seasonal ingredients and simple yet flavorful cooking methods. Wine and food tasting excursions on our Greece tours allow you to sample the best of Greek food and wine.
  • Visiting museums and galleries.  Greece’s museums and galleries are a testament to the country’s rich history and culture. You’ll find artifacts from Greece’s most important archaeological digs in the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.
  • Taking a cooking class.  Cooking classes are a hands-on way to learn about Greek cuisine and culture, and they’re also a lot of fun. Many of our Greece tour packages offer added excursions where you’ll learn how to make traditional foods and enjoy your creations.
  • Tasting wines. Produced in a variety of climates and settings—from the hot, dry climate of the Peloponnese peninsula to the cooler, wetter climate of the northern regions—Greek wines are known for their variety of styles, which include light and refreshing whites and full-bodied reds. On our  Food & Wine: A Taste of Greece tour , you can explore the country’s different varietals.
  • Relaxing on the islands.  There are more than 6,000 Greek islands; the best are home to stunning scenery, delicious food, and beautiful beaches. If you’re planning a trip to this Mediterranean nation, make sure you visit these six islands . (Our Greek Islands tour  takes you to three of them!)

Greece has typical Mediterranean weather—usually mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. However, the weather can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year, so checking the forecast before traveling on any of our Greece tour packages is essential.

  • Respect for traditions. Greeks are very proud of their culture and history, so it is important to be respectful of their traditions. This includes dressing appropriately for visits to religious sites.
  • Greeting people. It is customary to greet people with a handshake and a kiss on the cheek. Of course, you can choose what feels comfortable for you.
  • Dining. While in some countries it is considered rude to not finish your meal, in Greece it is considered polite to leave some food on your plate at the end of a meal.
  • Tipping. It is customary to tip in Greece, but the amount is up to you. A tip of 10–15% is generally considered acceptable.
  • Greek Orthodox Church holidays and festivals. Pay attention to the calendar because many businesses are closed on these days.

Greek food is famous for its use of fresh, seasonal ingredients, its simple yet flavorful cooking methods, and its emphasis on healthy eating. Trips like our Food & Wine: A Taste of Greece tour are guaranteed to be full of meals featuring fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables. Some typical ingredients in Greek cuisine include olive oil and feta cheese, as well as grilled fish and meat. Some of the most popular dishes to try on Greece trips include:

  • Souvlaki. A grilled skewer of meat, usually lamb or pork, served with pita bread, tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki.
  • Gyros. This is a similar dish to souvlaki, but the meat in gyros is cooked on a vertical rotisserie. You can find this popular street food all over the country.
  • Moussaka. A traditional Greek baked dish made with layers of eggplant, ground beef, béchamel sauce, and feta cheese.
  • Spanakopita. Served as an appetizer or main course, this savory pie is created with fresh spinach and feta cheese enclosed in crispy phyllo dough. Spanakopita is best enjoyed warm.
  • Tzatziki. On a hot day, this refreshing dip made from yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, and herbs hits the spot. Enjoy it served with pita bread, vegetables, or meats.
  • Olives. Olives are grown in many parts of Greece, but the Peloponnese region is the largest producer. The dark purple Kalamata olive, famous for its rich flavor, is one of the most well-known varieties of Greek olives.
  • Feta cheese. This traditional Greek cheese—salty, tangy, and crumbly—has been produced for centuries. Often used in salads, dips, and sauces, feta makes a delicious snack or appetizer.

Greek is the most widely spoken language in Greece; however, English is widely spoken in popular areas.

The euro. To stock up on local currency, order some euros from your bank before you go, or use your debit card at an ATM once you arrive. For tips on using the euro while on a trip to Greece, check out our blog on currency exchange .

We recommend packing light for your trip to Greece. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. If you’re visiting the islands, you’ll likely have to bring your bag with you on the ferry, so make sure you’re comfortable carrying it. After you’ve booked one of our Greece tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Sun protection.  For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Greece, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Layers.  We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.  Since you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential to have with you. Those walking shoes will come in handy while exploring the rugged ruins of Ancient Greece or the volcanic shores of Santorini.
  • Dressier attire. If you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on our trips to Greece, you may want to pack dressier attire.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites.  On our Greece tours, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and staff at these sites may deny entrance on this basis.
  • A small day bag.  Many churches and museums will not allow you to bring in large backpacks for security purposes—you’ll need to check them at the door. However, you can wear a small day bag on your front, like a cross-body travel bag or stylish mini backpack.
  • An RFID money belt or wallet.  Greece’s city streets can get busy, and like in any country with many tourists, you’ll want to be wary of pickpockets. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) can protect your credit card info from electronic theft, and a money belt will conceal your cash without ruining your outfit.

Once you’ve reserved one of our tour packages to Greece, we’ll send you detailed information about what to bring with you. Don’t forget to download the  Go Ahead app  before you take off, so you’ll have all the info you need about your trip right in your pocket.

Destination Must-See's

Greece ms1

This is the most spectacular destination in the Mediterranean and holds the most prehistoric settlement in the region. The ancient town of Akrotiri was once destroyed and consequently preserved by a volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C. The excavation site of this city is known as the “Minoan Pompeii.” But perhaps the island’s greatest draws are its vineyards, whitewashed chapels, volcanic cliffs, and famous wines of Santorini.

Greece ms2

Known as the “whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades islands” or the “Island of the Winds,” it is said that the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. It also gets its name from the grandson of Apollo - “Mykonos.” In the island’s capital town you will find the church, town hall, castle, the Archaeological, Folklore, and Maritime Museums, and a shopper’s paradise – Matoyianni Street.

Greece ms3

Athens is the capital city of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. It is home to many celebrated ancient monuments including the imposing Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Gate – the symbolic entrance to the city. It also has the charming Plaka neighborhood which has been without interruption since antiquity.

Greece ms4

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C. You can walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium, witness amazing sculptures at the museum, or even attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

Destination Must-Do's

Greece md1

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Greece md2

Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. The site includes two sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings that were mostly intended for sports. The earliest finds in Delphi date back to 4000 B.C. from the Korykeion Andron, a cave where the first rituals took place. The ruins are filled with an enormous amount of history and beauty.

Greece md3

Greek Olive Farm:

Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean diet, and Greece is a major grower and producer of olive products. A visit to a Greek olive farm can provide a taste of Greek culture and serve as a window into everyday life in the country. Tours, tastings, meals, and cooking classes hosted at olive farms are all wonderful options on the table when venturing into Greece’s countryside.

Greece md4

Travel back in time with a visit to Athens’s old city – the Plaka. The hilly cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings housing small shops, sidewalk cafes and family-owned restaurants making this neighborhood Athens’ crowned jewel. The neighborhood comes alive at night. The alleyways fill with music and dancing and locals and visitors alike dine on their favorite traditional dishes.

Expert Advice

diana

Getting around is easier than you would expect. Greeks can speak English enough to assist travelers, and street signs are in both Greek and English.

Greece e2

Much of your trip may focus on the ancient past yet I suggest you also take time to explore the vibrant traditions that still live in today’s Greek culture.

Greece e3

Greece is a welcoming destination year-round. Consider visiting October through May to beat the summer bustle, and with Greece’s 250+ days of sunshine in an average year, don’t forget your sunglasses.

Iconic Greece & the Cyclades

With some of Europe’s oldest civilizations developing in this country, impressive monuments still stand as proof of the empires that once called the ancient Panhellenic capital home. While the mainland’s architecture will take you on a trip through time, the Cyclades of Mykonos and Santorini will inspire you to cherish the simpler things in life. Endless blue seas, whitewashed buildings at dramatic angles and pink skies play backdrop to the distinctive cultural heritage and fascinating local traditions of a millennia-old and multifaceted civilization. Our happy travellers rave about Greece

Every day was amazing.

Wow, everything was great. Every day was amazing and an adventure. The hotels were beautiful and the meals were fantastic. The tours were fantastic. So well-organized, so glad we did it. We loved Caroline (our Group Guru) and Harris (our National Guide in Greece). Fantastic trip! You see so much. A great vacation. Caroline made sure we were all ready and kept us secure. Loved all the tours, bus, ferry and flights. I wouldn’t change a thing. We were thrilled with the service, the excursions, and food.

Highlights for me include Olympia, lunches, Acropolis, Santorini, and Mykonos. Nice to have rest and leisure time in Mykonos and a glass of wine at the pool. I also always had fun times on the bus!

Fantastic & professional

Everyone was very friendly and easy to talk to. Joe Ennis (our guru) was absolutely fantastic and professional. Thank you so much! The food was great!! The sites we saw were right up my alley. I think just getting to know the people in the group was my favourite. I am not usually the most outgoing guy, but everyone was great.

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly

The highlights were seeing so much of Greece and the fabulous food and wine! Our Group Guru, Joe, added humour, a sense of security and professionalism to our tour. He was very sensitive to all of our needs and wants, and always made sure we were taken care of! Our National Guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, it was a pleasure to have her as our guide!

Impressed with the staff

We are again most impressed with the Approach office staff as they were always so eager to answer our pre-tour questions and sent us very useful gifts. Hats off to you guys!

Ancient cities, the Aegean and a history like no other

Greece is a land of legends, mythological creatures and gods and goddesses. But it is also a county that lives very much in the present, its inhabitants filled with a lust for life who make the very most of this spectacularly beautiful place.

Exploring the country’s ancient roots is a highlight of any trip. Almost every city, town and village has a link to the past and the country’s formidable collection of historic sites span four millennia. Greece found itself under the rule of several empires, all of which have left their mark. The country is a rich tapestry of ancient temples, Venetian forts and Byzantine monasteries with plenty of other wonders stitched in between.

Greece is split into three main geographical regions: the mainland, the Peloponnese Peninsula and the country’s 6,000 beautiful islands. Each has its own distinct identity and offers something unique. Offering something different in every region, Greece has it all.

With 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites to its name, Greece has every right to be proud of its heritage. It’s not all about archaeology, however, and nature lovers will not be left disappointed. Greece is one of the most mountainous countries in Europe and the lush forests and rivers of Epirus, Thessaly and Thrace are ripe for exploring.

One look at a map and you’ll see that Greece is a country eager to dip its toes into the ocean. With 16,000km of coastline and a vast collection of islands scattered throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas, it is famous the world over for its pristine beaches. Let yourself be lured by the white sand and sparkling water, discovering quiet coves, quaint harbours and bustling ports along the way. Whatever it is you want from your Greek vacation, let Jacada Travel help you discover this diverse country.

Where to go

agjencia gryka tours

Often referred to as the cradle of Western civilisation, it’s a city bursting at the seams with culture, intrigue and beauty.

mykonos-windmills

Mykonos might be one of the smallest islands in the Cyclades complex but it makes up for it in character. Its reputation as a glamorous party destination has stuck since the 50s and while it’s true people here know how to have a good time, the island is incredibly beautiful, its beaches and secluded corners offering refuge to those who seek it.

santorini-blue-roofs

Sheer cliffs hundreds of metres high shield coves and beaches made up of red, white and black sand, while pretty villages of limewashed cubic houses creep up the sides, nestled into every nook and cranny.

agjencia gryka tours

The southern peninsular of Peloponnese, separated from the mainland by the Corinth Canal, encapsulates everything that is wonderful about Greece. It is both rich in culture and naturally beautiful.

motorboat-loutro-crete

Crete was home to Europe’s earliest civilisation, the Minoans, and the legendary birthplace of Zeus. That’s quite a claim to fame but not content to just be historically interesting, the island also has a wealth of natural beauty and some of the country’s best beaches.

spetses-town-greece

Despite this rather diminutive size, it has a rich history dating back millennia and has been a favourite of well-to-do Athenians for over a century, now hosting a handful of wonderful boutique hotels.

agjencia gryka tours

The southwestern-most of the Cyclades, it encapsulates the beautiful beaches, rustic white-washed houses, cyan waters, great food and rich history of its neighbours without the crowds of Santorini or Mykonos.

chora-folegandros-chora

Folegandros

Positioned in the southern reaches of the Cyclades and surrounded by the glistening blues of the Aegean Sea, Folegandros is a beautiful and largely undiscovered island, currently emerging as a rewarding and laid-back haven.

santorini-greece-cyclades-islands

Paros is an idyllic Greek island, which decorates the already beautifully mesmerizing Aegean seas, as part of a group of islands known as the Cyclades. It is the second largest island here and is famous for its bright sandy beaches which are lapped by perfectly turquoise waters, as well as its quaint yet traditional villages, connected by unrivalled Byzantine footpaths.

When to visit

Greece  is known for glorious summer weather, blazing sunshine and clear blue skies from May to September. This is typically the best time to visit Greece – the country is full of life and temperatures reach the late 30s. It’s also peak season, though, so many tourists descend on the small island.

Me and my family recent returned from a 2 week family trip in Greece-- my wife and i and out 2 early 20s daughters. Throughout the planning process Jacada was great-- as we brought up ideas of what we wanted to do they came up with suggestions- in the end we had a great tripped planned. Hotels were amazing, activities…

Working with Meg and Rita was great and trip was flawlesss exceeding our expectations.

Everything was set up perfectly! The daily events and activities went off flawlessly with people incredibly knowledgeable about the area and who were extremely welcoming. The hotel choices were superb! I will be using Jacada again!

Jacada created a truly exceptional travel experience for me and my partner for our 20th wedding anniversary to Greece. On the planning side and execution of the trip, the entire staff worked together to take care of our every need. All staff members listened to our preferences and then designed a trip that felt very catered to how we wanted…

In Greece, you will be able to feel like this dream nation, built by gods and heroes, comes to life. You will also enjoy classical temples and whitewashed buildings silhouetted against the blue sea. Cradle of history and mythology, modern Greece attracts visitors from all over the world willing to recognize landscapes read and recreated before in their own imagination.

Rugged and mountainous terrain rises in surprising proximity to the sea; olive groves and Byzantine domes are drawn on the horizon and countless islands watch the arrival and departure of today's travelers as they did thousands of years ago.

You must visit Athens, the cultural and communication center of Greece . A somewhat chaotic city, like any  other city, with intense traffic, it is home of one of the greatest treasures of the classical world in permanent reconstruction: the Parthenon .

In turn, you will have to contemplate The Peloponnese, located in the continental Hellenic territory, which offers a journey through history: Corinth and Mycenae , the fortified palace of Agamemnon, the sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia . In the Aegean Sea, the Cyclades are the archetypal Greek island, with destinations as popular as Mykonos or Santorini . There are also the Dodecanese islands, such as Rhodes , where the Colossus used to rise, and Crete , the kingdom of the legendary Minos , rich in ruins of the Minoan civilization such as the palace of Knossos .

What people love about Greek Islands Tours

The overall experience was nice with having private drivers, however a few things could have been explained a bit better. When arriving at the port, a gate assignment would have helped for the ferry. Maybe a link to the Sea Jet website? The motel in Mykonos was vary dated, with broken furniture, and light fixtures in the room. It was also a very long way from anything if you were walking. It was quite remote, and probably one I would have never considered as the port and restaurants/ shops were all 2.5 miles away.
Tour radar was excellent to work with! We had a large group of 12 adults, they did their very best to keep us all together. They arranged all the ferries to each island, transportation to and from the airport. Our hotels were all very nice, especially the location of Athens and Santorini. We would have like to have been more in town when in Mykonos. Highly recommend! We can’t wait to book our next adventure
Top travel. Very well organized, never waited for a driver, all hotels were will informed, no problems. Hotel quality was good for the price, sometimes a little to far away, but always good to travel by car, bus, or moto. We are really planning more trips after such a good worry-free experience
