Change of pace on Florence stay. We enjoyed this trip as one day of our stay in Florence for our honeymoon. After days of sleeping in, walking around sight seeing and eating, we needed a change of pace and some real exercise. It was great to get out into the countryside and fresh air. Even the short and sudden rain storm was a fun part of the ride. And if you aren't looking to push yourself at all, then you can skip the hill climb and ride the van to the top. About half the group opted for this. Lunch was delicious and the castle tour with wine and olive oil tastings were the icing on the cake. I highly recommend this.

Highlight of my trip. What an amazing experience and exceeded my expectations hugely. Started off with a castle tour where our guide Alex/ Alessio told us about the history of wine production. Followed by wine tasting. I found this very interesting and you can really tell that Alessio knows his stuff. This was followed by a challenging but incredibly enjoyable bike ride around 25km. We managed to stop at the best view point to take pictures. I think what really made the difference was our tour guide. Alex went out of his way to reccomend the best places to eat in Florence and was very hospitable. This definitely the highlight of my trip I’m Florence.

Friendly staff, love adventure. Had a great day biking around the Tuscan hills and visiting a castle with great wine and olive oil tasting. The staff were very friendly and mindful of safety measures on the road. Highly recommend this tour

Mario was a great host! A brilliant was to see the city :-) I was the only person on the bike tour, but Mario was a great host and tour guide! We did the city bike tour through the streets of Florence and he was very knowledgeable and able to answer all my questions. I'm so glad the tour went ahead even though it was just me! A brilliant way to see the city. I was also able to reschedule to a different day at short notice :-) Thank you, Mario!

Wonderful Bike Tour in the Hills of Chianti. This tour was absolutely amazing. In the morning hours we did a nice bike tour along the streets of the Chianti region. The lunch was very tasty as well as the wine later in the castle. Our guide Alessio told us about the history of wine production and was very entertaining and fun to spend time with. If you want to experience the countryside of Toscana and the wine, we can definitely recommend this tour! Grazie mille Alessio, alla prossima Sven and Alessia.

Put the fun between your legs! I really enjoy wine and even more so, I love cycling! What better place to do so, than Tuscany! And what better group to do it with than Tuscany Bike Tours! Not only are the guides knowledgeable and safe but fun! All the guides brought their own unique and enjoyable personality to the day. They were keen to provide additional information about the area and didn’t hesitate to answer questions. Try it and make sure you do the hill climb! Wine will fuel you for it! Thanks for the fun day to all the boys at Tuscany Bike Tours! And a shout out to Tom for leading the peloton! Grazie! Miranda from Canada!

An absolute MUST! We had an absolute blast riding Vespas through Tuscany! The moment we walked in the door we were met with the guides' charming and witty personalities. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, exactly how you would imagine it. I was nervous about driving a Vespa for the first time, but it was incredibly easy and the guides make sure you know what you are doing before they put you out on the road. The castle was stunning! There were only two of us on the Vespa Tour that day, so we had Angus all to ourselves. He was so fun and super knowledgeable. We loved his British accent:) Jacopo was our driver and guide through the castle. He was amazing and so fun! We enjoyed hearing him sing along to "nostalgic" American music and teaching him American slang (Bye, Felicia!) He was such a good sport! Definitely one of, if not the highlight of our 2 weeks in Italy.

Best day of our entire Italy trip! Book this Vespa tour!!! My husband and I will never forget the experience. We had a blast and we both agree it was the absolute highlight of our entire Italy vacation! The guides are fantastic... knowledgeable and funny! They also made me feel extremely comfortable and safe on the Vespa. I had never been on one before (or on anything similar) but they teach you how to ride it in a parking lot before hitting the road. I caught on quickly! The day was just such a blast. The castle/winery tour complete with a wine and olive oil tasting was wonderful. Lunch was delicious. And the ride itself through the Tuscan countryside was something I’ll never forget. Will recommend to anyone I know traveling to Italy!

Can't say enough. The vespa tour was the highlight of our trip. The guides were both knowledgeable, friendly and easy to talk to. The castle and the scenery were awesome. They quickly rearranged the tour due to impending rain. Lunch h was incredible. Best pasta I had in our entire stay. Highly recommend this tour, thanks to our guides and their attention to our safety.

Vespa Tour Florence Frequent-Asked Questions

Do you need an international driver’s license to to go on a vespa tour from florence.

To rent a basic 125cc Vespa you’ll require a valid driver’s license and an International Driver’s Permit (the latter is often referred to as an International driver’s license). If you want to hire anything more powerful, you’ll require a motorcycle license so just keep that in mind.

International Driving Permits aren’t expensive and you’ll have to keep it on you, as you can be fined by the Italian police otherwise. Your tour operator will likely check this when you’re booking, to ensure their insurance is valid.

What do you wear on a Vespa tour in Tuscany?

First of all, on any Vespa tour, you’ll be given a helmet to wear. You must wear this at all times, and if you don’t, you won’t be allowed on the tour. Secondly, you’ll require comfortable, yet sturdy shoes (no sandals). These will preferably cover your ankles.

When it comes to clothing, make sure you wear a long-sleeve jacket and trousers. Not only can the wind be chilly when you’re driving through Tuscany, but you’ll be more protected in the unfortunate case that you do come off the scooter. So make sure you pack accordingly if you’re researching Vespa tours in Tuscany!

What is the best way to explore Tuscany?

Many people choose to explore this area on a tour or rent a car in Tuscany. However, heading out on a Vespa tour in Tuscany offers you the best of both worlds. This way, you’ll get around quickly, but you’ll also have a guide with you at all times who will teach you about this beautiful Italian region.

Vespa tours usually last for around 6+ hours so you’ll get to see a good chunk of the area in this time. For those who’d prefer to see more, you can always hire a Vespa or scooter yourself. Just make sure you exercise caution when driving.

Where can you go on a Vespa tour in Tuscany?

You’ll also find tours that depart from other locations too, such as Badesse, San Gimignano, and Siena . No matter where you’re staying, you should find an option that’s suitable for you. Otherwise, just make your way to Florence or one of the towns I’ve just mentioned.

Are Vespa tours in Tuscany suitable for everyone?

Honestly, the answer is no! First of all, the minimum age for a Vespa tour is 18, and some companies may even require you to be older than this. These tours also aren’t suitable for pregnant travelers or those who have very young children, although some companies do allow children as a passenger.

Not only are there restrictions on the tours themselves, but driving a Vespa around Italy isn’t for everyone. In some cases, you’ll have to traverse steep narrow roads.

Open the throttle, follow your experienced guide along the winding country lanes, and soak up breathtaking vistas of the beautiful Tuscan countryside. With each turn, you'll be greeted by sprawling vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. The aroma of the earth and the gentle caress of the wind on your face create an unparalleled sensory experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the magic of Tuscany.

As you cruise along the picturesque roads, keep an eye out for hidden treasures such as medieval churches and ancient wineries that dot the landscape. Each stop along your route offers a chance to breathe in the history and heritage of the region, creating unforgettable memories of your Vespa adventure in Tuscany. We’ll also enjoy a short visit around the town of Greve in Chianti, where there will also be a tasting of local products.

Enjoy a Tuscan Winery Visit

After a 30-kilometer (19-mile) round trip at a leisurely pace of 25 kilometers per hour (15 mph), the tour brings you to a renowned Chianti winery. Here, embark on a guided tour and gain insight into the intricate process of winemaking in Tuscany. As you explore the cool cellars, discover rows of oak barrels where the wine slowly matures and develops its distinctive character. Learn the secrets of aging and blending, and hear how each element contributes to the creation of remarkable wines.

Traditional Tuscan Meal, with Wine and Olive Oil Tasting

Then, it’s time to end your Vespa tour in style with a traditional Tuscan lunch or dinner (depending on your chosen departure time), served with a wine and olive oil tasting.

When your time at the Tuscan winery comes to an end, return in comfort to your starting point in Florence to conclude your tour.

The vespa tour was an absolute blast. Unfortunately the equipment supplied to Fun in Tuscany by a third party was not the most reliable, however, the scenery and ride was worth any trouble that may have been caused by said equipment.

Wonderful daytrip

We had a fabulous time on this tour in Tuscany. Our guide, Daniele (Daniel), helped make this a memorable trip. The horseback ride was an easy jaunt around the countryside, so we could enjoy the peaceful views. The wine tasting and meal were informative and fun, as well as very tasty. We rounded the tour off singing along to Daniele's awesome playlist of rock n roll classics on the way back to Florence. Great fun!

BEST Tour We've Ever Been on with the BEST Guides

Last year, my girlfriend and I booked the horseback riding tour during a two month trek throughout Europe. We went to Rome, Barcelona, Paris, the Greek Islands, Venice and many other beautiful places during those two months and out of all the tours we did, this was BY FAR the best day we had. We had Daniel as our guide and he did a tremendous job making the tour super fun and memorable. The tour starts with a quick stop at Piazzale Michelangelo, a picturesque view of Florence, including the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and larger than life Duomo. We then took a beautiful ride to a winery in Tuscany that words cannot describe how beautiful the view is. After that stop, you are taken down the road to meet the beautiful horses and begin a surreal hour long trek through the jaw droppingly gorgeous Tuscan vineyards. The horses for the most part run on auto-pilot and are very easy to control, they know the path and allow you the time to just enjoy the amazing view. After finishing the horseback riding, you are taken to the medieval town of San Gimignano and given an informative tour of the grounds, ending with free time and a chance to try delicious gelato from the award winning Gelateria Dondoli. After this, you are taken to a beautiful family run winery in Tuscany where you are able to try out 9 different wines all paired with delicious Italian dishes. All of the food was great, but I have to say the lasagna (which is a family recipe) is the most delicious lasagna I have ever had in my life. The truffle olive oil takes the taste to a completely different level beyond anything I would have ever expected of food offerings at a winery. After a farewell toast, you are back on your way to Florence wishing you could do it all again tomorrow. All the while, you are enjoying fun music and bonding time with the guides and other passengers. We loved this tour so much that we decided to return to Florence this past month and do this horseback riding tour again with my girlfriend's mom and her husband. It was just as amazing this time around and it was a real treat to share this with them. Daniel was working with a different group, though we did get to catch up with him throughout the day, and we were equally lucky to have Daniele as our main tour guide this time. Fun in Tuscany is extremely lucky to have two amazing individuals like Daniel and Daniele on their staff. They make the experience so fun for everyone and are just two genuinely great people. I can't wait until we get to hang out with them again when we come back for our third tour.

Are you ready for one epic road trip that takes you behind the wheels of Italy's most famed mode of transportation? The start of your exciting TravelBase Vespa trip through Tuscany begins in the famed city of Pisa. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed at your hotel where you can check into your room, and then be introduced to the Vespa Trip guides. From there, it’s time to explore Pisa as an exploratory amuse-bouche before you go off riding!

The city itself is prominent for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is a stunning landmark that is unmissable. A freestanding bell tower that is famous for its unintended tilt, it has continued to lean over the centuries due to various factors from the soft ground it was built on. To this day, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is considered a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pisa is also home to other notable landmarks and cultural attractions that you can explore, such as the Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistry, and the Pisa Museums. By evening time, you’re invited to have a classic Italian drink at a local bar with all of the Vespa Trippers and guides before you embark on your journey the next day!

Stop 2 :Pontedera

Now, the next day is when your Vespa Trip through Tuscany truly starts, as you’ll get to strap on your helmet and take a step to the pedal of your shiny pastel-colour Vespa. Yep, this is the moment you'll be handed keys to the kingdom - well, your fantastic two-wheeler kingdom, that is. Right away, you’ll set off on a journey on your new Vespa that will have you zipping through the winding roads that adorn the Tuscan landscape, heading into the idyllic countryside where the vineyards meet the olive groves.

While you’re riding your Vespa on your way to Siena, the Medieval Tuscan city is only the endpoint as there are plenty of enriching sights to explore along the way. Your first stop will be the artisanal town of Pontedera, where the emblematic Vespa itself was born. Here, you can visit the Vespa museum (Museo Piaggio) for free.

Pontedera, with strong roots in Italy’s industrial history, has an artistic soul on the Era and Arno rivers. The whole city is like an open-air museum, from the 100m long wall covered by a mosaic aka the Enrico Baj to the designer benches that welcome anyone in Piazza Garibaldi.

carousel image

Stop 3 :San Gimignano

After the birthplace of the Vespa in Pontedera, you’ll cruise for about an hour on your Vespa through the ancient countryside where the sky meets the swaying meadows, dotted with Parish churches and Tuscan villages. Take in the sights of what makes Tuscany just so romantic and peaceful - from the neatly planted vineyards to the pebble roads, no wonder why it's so easy to fall in love with Central Italy. On one of the many scenic hills of this region, you’ll then arrive at a walled Medieval town known as San Gimignano.

San Gimignano has, hands down, one of the most breathtaking skylines in the world. Tall toppling stone towers will automatically daydream you away to the Middle Ages, and as you roam these streets that haven’t changed their design much since then, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped through an actual Renaissance painting itself.

This is the town to have a glass of Vernaccia, a white wine that is produced within the surrounding hills of San Gimignano itself. Since you’re here just in time for lunch, you can pair your wine with some of the local’s favourites - like homemade pici pasta, Ribollita (a thick vegetable and bread soup), and crespelle with asparagus and ribola cheese.

carousel image

Stop 4 :Siena

End your first day by arriving in Siena, about a 45-minute drive from San Gimignano. Siena is a Tuscan city that will easily bewitch its visitor with a true love-at-first-sight feeling. Located in the heart of Tuscany, Siena is quintessential what makes Tuscany much loved: its sensational art collection, architecture that weaves through its contrade (distinctive urban districts) and a history that reaches back further than the Romans - all the way to the Etruscans.

Siena is already prominent for its annual horse race, the Palio di Siena, which takes place in the city's main square, the Piazza del Campo. There, in the centre of town - you can wander around the Piazza del Campo, and soak up what is considered one of the most beautiful squares in all of Italy. The square is surrounded by soaring medieval buildings, including the Palazzo Pubblico, which is home to the city's government.

For dinner, sit out on one of the many places lining the piazza (unlike other landmark dining locations, most of the ones here aren’t actually a tourist trap), grab a coffee or gelato as dessert, or just people-watch and enjoy the jovial atmosphere as the locals do. It makes a simple yet delightful way to end the evening.

carousel image

Stop 5 :Chianti Region

Sprawling between the gently sloping hillsides of Siena and Florence is Chianti, a region within Tuscany known for its namesake type of wine. Made from the Sangiovese grape, the Chianti region produces both red and white wines. But it is the red Chianti Classico that it’s best known, which is a full-bodied wine with flavours of irresistible cherries and that masculine leather.

Even on your Vespa ride, you’ll notice countless vineyards ebbing and flowing alongside the road until you reach Radda. Radda is the capital of the Chianti region and will give you what an authentic charming Italian town feels like - without the tourist crowds. You can check out La Bottega di Giovannino, a petite wine bar located in town. There’s also Bar Ucci, which has a special focus on Chianti Classico.

Another pit stop close by is Greve, a Medieval town where you can explore artisanal local shops like the Macelleria Falorni (locals say that this is the oldest butcher shop in the Western world). Also don’t miss out on the triangular-shaped square of Piazza Matteotti!

carousel image

Stop 6 :Florence

The cradle of the Renaissance, a whole historic centre that’s been crowned a UNESCO World Heritage Site, all located on the Arno river itself… It can only be the golden child of Central Italy and the capital of Tuscany, Firenze. Also known as Florence, a city that is steeped in old-world romance, filled with legendary art that has influenced Western civilization and where Tuscan food is as mouth-watering as it could get since the cooking is from seasonal ingredients grown in the Florentine countryside. For any traveller, Florence is a force to be reckoned with.

A Vespa road trip through Tuscany just can’t be completed without a stay in Florence. With tons of sights to see - you’ll have your pick all around the city. The Uffizi Gallery rivals Paris’ Lourve Museum, and if you go early in the morning, it’ll feel like you have most of the art museum to yourself. Or, visit the original sculpture of David that’s located in the Accademia Gallery of Florence. Roam within the walls of the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Take a stroll down the arched bridge of Ponte Vecchio. And be sure to make your way to our favourite spot in the whole city, Piazzale Michelangelo where you can see all of Florence from its grand open balcony.

When it’s time, you’ll continue your Vespa trip out into the Florentine hills, where the Tuscan landscapes will roll out in front of you. About 45 minutes outside of the city, you’ll arrive at Lago Le Certane, to have a breather on the lake before driving to Vinci. Vinci, while small in size, is rather impactful since one of Italy’s most famous people in the world originates from here - Leonardo da Vinci.

carousel image

Stop 7 :Lucca

Lucca has this small-town feel for a Tuscan city, that offers a close-to-the-sea alternative to its hilly Siena and Florence. It's easy to overlook Lucca for first-timers in Tuscany (especially since Florence and Siena get so many hearts swooning away). Still, the humbleness and local scene of Luca is what adds to this city's allure and why it's worth uncovering on this Vespa trip.

Explore the well-preserved historic centre of Lucca, which is surrounded by ancient walls. The walls, which were built in the 16th century, are now a popular place for walking and biking and offer stunning views of the city and surrounding Tuscan countryside.

Lucca’s historic centre is also home to many beautiful churches, such as the Basilica di San Frediano and the Cattedrale di San Martino, as well as the Puccini Museum, which is dedicated to the famous composer.

When you’re hungry, definitely cosy into one of Lucca’s trattorias with traditional Tuscan cuisine heavily influenced by the region's rich agricultural history. Look out for classic dishes like pappardelle al sugo di cinghiale (wide pasta noodles with wild boar sauce) that are cooked in Chianti Classico wine.

Stop 8 :Secret location to wrap up the Vespa trip

The fifth and last day of the Vespa trip in Tuscany is where you can choose between spending the day at the beach - yep, few actually know that Tuscany has pristine beaches to be discovered! Or you can continue on driving your Vespa to Bagni di Lucca.

Not that we need another reason to be absolutely smitten with Tuscany, but in the area of Bagni di Lucca is home to several thermal baths. The most famous of these is the Terme Tettuccio, which is located a stone-throw away in Montecatini and offers a variety of treatments and therapies. You can visit them as a treat to relax and unwind, especially at the end of an adrenaline-fuelled Vespa tour!

From Bagni di Lucca, there’s also one last surprise on the Vespa trip. Closed off from the outside world and unbeknownst to many travellers in Italy is Montefegatesi. Along the route to Montefegatesi, you’ll be whisked away off the River Lima to swim in a secluded spot that’s not even indicated on the map! You can only find this authentic hidden gem via the GPS coordinates that TravelBase Vespa tours will secretly share with you.

To wrap up the Vespa trip, you’ll ride back to Pisa where you first embarked on this grand journey. It’s time to say goodbye to your new two-wheeled best friend and end this adventure that’s for sure one for the books.

Road Trip in Tuscany : Vespa itinerary

road trip in tuscany

Article mis à jour le 11 Apr 2024

Itinerary : 5-day road trip in Tuscany

Tuscany is world-famous for its wine, but you should know that there are many other things to see and do in Tuscany… I love Italy, and this trip had clearly been on my list for a long time. It’s time for a road trip in Tuscany .

So we’re going to help you plan your 5-day Tuscany itinerary with some must-see places .

  • Arrival in Pisa (Day 1)
  • Village of San Gimignano and Siena (Day 2)
  • Chianti region and Florence (Day 3)
  • Visit to Lucca (Day 4)
  • Return to Pisa (Day 5)

Tuscany in 5 days

How do i get to tuscany .

If you choose to fly, you can arrive in Pisa or Florence. You can compare and book your flights on Ulysse. Take advantage of a €10 discount through our referral link with the code PVWYP4ESA .

You can also travel by train or car, depending on your point of departure.

When to take a road trip in Tuscany ?

May/June or September/October are the best months. Whether you do the Vespa Trip or not, the temperatures will be more pleasant than in midsummer, when it can be VERY hot. I personally did it at the end of August, and it’s true that the heat was sometimes overwhelming.

Getting around in Tuscany

Since I travelled with the Vespa Trip and loved the experience, I can only advise you to hire a 2-wheeler ! The main advantage is that you don’t have to worry about parking in the towns. But if you’re not comfortable with that, you can of course choose to hire a car for this week’s itinerary in Tuscany.

Alternatively, if you only want to visit the main towns in Tuscany, you can use the Italian rail network, which is pretty well served and cheap !

🛵 Vespa Trip in Tuscany

If you’d like to do exactly the same trip as I did, I’d recommend The Vespa Trip – which I’d already mentioned in our Amalfi Coast road trip itinerary . They organise the same type of holiday in Tuscany. The principle is simple : everything is turnkey !

For 5 days, you’ll have your Vespa at your disposal and they’ll take care of everything : hotel bookings (2/3* range), transport of your luggage during the day… You’ll change hotels every day and all you have to do is enjoy the Tuscan countryside, eat Italian food and let themselves be guided by their recommendations. As usual, the Vespa Trip is great value for money.

>> All the information about the Vespa Trip in Tuscany can be found by clicking here .

If you don’t want to go on The Vespa Trip, I’ll give you my advice on where to stay in Tuscany at each stage of the itinerary.

Tuscany road trip itinerary : 5-day trip

I’m going to take you step by step through the stages of my road trip in Tuscany.

tuscany travel itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Pisa

Pisa is world-famous for its Leaning Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but that’s not all ! It’s a colourful little town that’s great for strolling around.

For those travelling with the Vespa Trip, this will be your point of departure with the Vespa and your point of return. You’ll arrive in Pisa and have time to enjoy the city on your first day, before setting off on your next adventure.

What to do in Pisa during your road trip in Tuscany ?

The tower of pisa and piazza duomo.

If there’s one must-see in Tuscany, it’s the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa ! As well as having a goofy photo session in front of the tower, you can visit it and climb its 297 steps. From the top, you can enjoy a unique view of the city.

I recommend that you book your entry ticket to this site in advance , with the ticket-cutting option to avoid long waits. Your reservation will also allow you to enter the Notre-Dame de l’Assomption cathedral.

what to do in tuscany

Why is the Leaning Tower of Pisa tilted ?

You might think that the leaning of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is due to the will of a mad architect, but no ! In fact, very soon after it was built, it began to tilt, due to the unstable ground caused by the presence of water deep below the surface. The more the years went by, the more the Tower of Pisa tilted, so numerous attempts were made to solidify it so that it wouldn’t collapse.

In the end, it’s a blessing in disguise, as this tilt has made it famous and attracts tourists from all over the world.

🏘️ Visiting Pisa city centre

From now on, I advise you to head south on foot, where you can visit the pretty centre of Pisa. Among the places to see are the botanical gardens (entrance fee payable), the Piazza del Cavalieri and the quays with their pretty, colourful buildings. In reality, I wandered through the streets at random, without a precise itinerary.

visit pisé

🍴 My good addresses in Pisa :

  • Have a drink : During the walk, I came across a small bar where I drank the best Aperol Spritz of my trip to Tuscany. This is a rare commodity as most places I’ve been to cut the Aperol with low-end white wine instead of Prosseco (the ultimate SACRILEGE). What’s more, they have the nerve to sell it at prices equivalent to those in France.

In short, if you want to drink a good cocktail at reasonable prices (€4) in Pisa, go to the bar The Parisian .

  • Eating in Pisa : Two tried and tested addresses : Pizzeria il Borgo 21 and Ristorante Santa Maria.
  • Evening in Pisa : if you want to extend your evening and go for a drink, head to Piazza della Vettovaglie, which is surrounded by bars, or to the Arno Vivo terrace on the quayside.

🛌 Where to stay in Pisa ?

Here are two establishments I recommend :

B&B Di Camilla , which is beautiful with a garden and well located, or La Torre Garbata , which has a crazy charm !

Day 2 : San Gimignano and Siena to start your Tuscany tour

Vespa and Road Trippers, let the adventure begin !

Road trip in Tuscany : itinerary

Click here to book your Vespa road trip (limited availability)

What to do in Tuscany ?

The road between the two towns is magnificent, and you’ll be amazed at almost every bend in the road.

♥️ Visit the village of San Gimignano

I particularly enjoyed the medieval village of San Gimignano . The centre is surrounded by charming walls and high towers. You’ll have a lot of fun wandering around. Once again, there’s no specific programme, just walk around it. For a good ice cream, head for Gelateria Don Dondolio, which has won the title of world champion several times. My verdict : I found it a little too sweet, but maybe that’s because I’m not a fan of desserts. You’ll tell me !

For a tasty Italian sandwich : go without hesitation to Vinaio di San Gimignano. Seating is limited, but I’d advise you to take away and picnic in the shade of the olive trees in the Parco Rocca di Montestaffoli, a 5-minute walk away.

visit san Gimignano

🏊‍♀️ River swimming in Tuscany

I was really hot after visiting San Gimignano , so I went looking for a place to take a cool break. I wasn’t disappointed when I discovered this little paradise! I wasn’t expecting this kind of place in Tuscany at all.

To get there, head for Colle di Val of Elsa. The access on foot is located on this GPS point .

It’s an easy 5/10 minute walk downhill. You can continue along the river until you find a quiet spot to rest. The water is an incredible turquoise blue… The temperature is cool but it feels good !

Arrival in Siena

Siena is a city worthy of a film set. Its historic centre is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a must-see place to visit in Tuscany !

What to do in Siena during your road trip in Tuscany ?

Here again, I wandered around at random, but here are the names of the places to see in Siena :

  • Piazza del Campo, which is the main point of the city. It is laid out in the shape of a snail and is lined with tourist bars and restaurants. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them, as the prices are high.
  • The Basilica of San Domenico, located high up so you can admire the view over Siena
  • The Duomo di Siena (cathedral) for fans of the Gothic period
  • The historic centre and its narrow streets.

If you want to make sure you don’t miss anything and get to know the history of Siena inside out, I recommend this 2-hour guided tour of the city : click here to book .

visit siena tuscany

🍴 Where to eat in Siena ?

I had dinner at Osteria Permalico Siena and it was delicious! The terrace is very pleasant. A second address I’d recommend with a traditional decor : the Grotta Santa Caterina da Bagoga restaurant.

🛌 Where to stay in Siena ?

To stay close to the centre of Siena, you have two options : the Santa Caterina Hotel , built within an 18th-century villa, or the Hotel Alma Domus , just a 2-minute walk from the Basilica of San Domenico.

If you want to stay in the heart of nature, with a swimming pool, and not too far from Siena, I’ve found 2 wonderful establishments for you : the Gli Archi di Corsanello , or the Borgo La Torre alle Tolfe .

siena what to do

Day 3 : The Chianti Valley, on the road to Florence

The Tuscany region is famous for its vineyards. Chianti is one of the most famous appellations. So we’re going to take advantage of this road trip in Tuscany to marvel at the typical stretches of vineyards.

The villages of Radda in Chianti and Greve in Chianti

Along the way, don’t hesitate to stop and admire any viewpoints you like. That’s another advantage of the 2-wheeler : you can stop anywhere.

You’ll pass through Radda in Chianti , a tiny village where it’s nice to stop for a cappuccino (or a glass of wine if you’re not too early in the morning 😂).

After a few stops, I had lunch at the Bottega del Moro restaurant in Greve in Chianti’s main square. The prices were a little higher than the average in Tuscany, but it was absolutely delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant !

What to do in Florence during your road trip in Tuscany ?

After a day in the vineyards, it’s time to head to the beautiful city of Florence. If you’d like to explore the city with a guide, you can book a free guided tour on this website .

Here are the must-see places in Florence :

Piazzale Michelangelo

Piazzale Michelangelo is located a little outside the city on a hill. Here you’ll have the best view of Florence, with the mountains behind. It’s simply breathtaking.

visit florence

Piazza del Duomo

This square is home to 4 splendid monuments : Florence Cathedral, St John’s Baptistery, a museum and Giotto’s campanile. The square. I recommend going there very early in the morning to be able to admire it without tourists.

> Florence Cathedral

You can visit Florence’s Duomo and climb to the dome by taking just over 400 steps. From here, you’ll have a view of the whole city.

Click here to book your ticket to the Cathedral, the Dome and the Opera Museum

what to do in florence

Ponte Vecchio

A beautiful spot for sunset or any time of day, the Ponte Vecchio is the city’s most famous bridge. It is the only bridge to have survived the bombardments of the Second World War. Don’t hesitate to go over the bridge, but also to walk away from it along the quays to admire it from the outside.

visit florence

Piazza della Signoria

Another superb square to see during your stay in Florence . You’ll see, it’s well worth the diversions.

There are many other places of interest to see in Florence that I didn’t have time to do: the Pitti Palace and its garden, the Santa Croce basilica, countless museums, Florence’s central market… If you’re passionate about art, history and architecture, I recommend allowing 3 days to enjoy it.

🍴 Where to eat in Florence ?

The city has no shortage of Italian restaurants or even restaurants of other nationalities. You’re in for a treat ! I particularly recommend Trattoria Zà Zà, an institution. Alternatively, for a more intimate and traditional setting, you can head to La Fettunta, a restaurant serving Tuscan dishes.

🛌 Where to stay in Florence ?

You’ll find a wide selection of accommodation in Florence, to suit all budgets, on Booking.com

Day 4 : From Florence to Lucca… for your road trip in Tuscany

Let’s continue our Tuscany road trip itinerary , heading for the last stop on the trip.

I stopped off in the village of Vinci, which owes its name to the famous Leonardo da Vinci, since that’s where he came from. To be honest, I didn’t see much of interest there… There’s nothing exceptional about the village, but there is a museum dedicated to the painter, so you’re free to go there if you’re interested.

What to do in Lucca ?

Lucca is a pretty town surrounded by ramparts built in the 16th century. This gives it a very special charm ! In the old town, within the ramparts, you can wander through the narrow streets and even walk on the walls on the paths that have been laid out. The Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is remarkable and highly original, being built in the shape of a Roman amphitheatre.

The top of the Torre Guinigi (the one with the trees) also offers a splendid view of the surrounding area. Access costs €5, but beware of closing times!

Where to eat in Lucca ?

Even if they are tempting, avoid the restaurants in the Piazza Dell’Anfiteatro because of the high prices. I had a delicious pizza at Pizzeria SUD, with great ingredients and reasonable prices.

Where to stay in Lucca ?

I stayed in a hotel outside the city centre with a swimming pool which was great. Click here to book .

visit lucca
