Palomino Launches Line-X Body Armor Editions

' src=

Palomino RV applies Line-X spray-on bed liner to the roof, sides, and underbody of a  Palomino SS-550 pop-up truck camper and teases a possible future of protective truck camper coatings.

Palomino body armor Line X campers

As a magazine, we purchased our own truck camper last summer.  The camper is an eleven year old hard side non-slide manufactured by a company that is no longer in business.  As such, the camper is a politically neutral vessel, perfect for our ongoing personal use and published upgrades, modifications, and travel reports.

About a year ago, we caulked, sealed, and SealTech tested our used truck camper to make sure it was free of leaks.  Less than a year later, we noticed that a few visible seal breaks had appeared, and we inspected and repaired the seals once more.  It was a bit disheartening to see how much a few of the seals had deteriorated but, in all fairness, we had driven the camper coast-to-coast, into Canada, and back again.

As we completed the task of sealing the rig once more, I had an idea that’s been burning in my mind ever since:

Why can’t we do better than these ridiculous toothpaste-like sealants?  It’s 2015 for goodness sake.  It’s not like I have to caulk and seal my truck.  Why can’t we use an advanced coating and seal this entire unit in 360 degrees?

In essence, I want to “bullet proof” our camper.  No, I don’t mean make our rig impervious to Uzis and Winchesters.  I mean make it completely water proof – roof, sides, and underbody – with long-lasting coatings.  One of the coatings I had in mind for this idea was a bed liner.

About that time we found out that Palomino was preparing a Line-X treated camper to display at the annual industry open house in Elkhart, Indiana.  According to the initial reports, the camper was literally Line-X treated on the roof, sides, and underbody.

Obviously I was very excited that they had taken this concept and run with it, and a little freaked out that they might be listening to my thoughts.  Hey Palomino, how many monkeys am I thinking of?

All monkeys aside (it was five), we called Pat Hines, Director of Truck Camper Marketing at Palomino RV to ask about the new Line-X treated Body Armor Editions.  Naturally, he knew I was calling before I did.

Body-Armor-Line-X-driver-side-back

Above: The new Line-X treated Body Armor Edition SS-550 – click to enlarge

TCM: What is the concept behind the Line-X treated Body Armor Editions?

Pat: As an exterior coating, Line-X is extremely durable.  For that reason, we have been Line-X coating the front caps of our Solaire travel trailer line and the undercarriage of our hard side Palomino Max Elite truck campers for the past four years.

Both applications have been exceptionally popular with our dealers and customers.  More importantly, we have had virtually no warranty issues with Line-X coated front caps.  It’s almost rock proof.

Above: The Line-X treated Body Armor Edition SS-550 at the Elkhart show – click to enlarge

No group would better appreciate the off-road durability of Line-X more than pop-up truck camper owners.  That is why we are launching a new Body Armor Edition on one of our most successful pop-up truck camper models, the SS-550.

To test the interest in the Line-X treated Body Armor Edition SS-550, we brought a prototype to the RV industry open-house in Elkhart, Indiana.  Dealers had a lot of positive feedback, both on the concept and the final result, and placed a number of orders at the event.  The real proof will be in the customer reactions, and sales.

Above: The underbody is coated with black Line-X – click to enlarge

TCM: Why Line-X?  Why not use another brand of bed liner?

Pat: We believe Line-X is the best coating in the business.  In fact, we have invested in a dedicated Line-X booth here at Palomino RV.  We use Line-X exclusively.

Above: The photo on the left is Palomino’s pebble fiberglass without Line-X.  The photo on the right is Palomino’s pebble fiberglass coated with Line-X – click to enlarge

TCM: Do the exterior materials – one piece fiberglass roof, high gloss gel-coat fiberglass sides, and pebble fiberglass underbody – need to be prepared prior to applying the Line-X?

Pat: Yes, the surfaces need to be scuffed to ensure proper adhesion of the Line-X.  In particular, need to remove the sheen from the smooth fiberglass sides so the Line-X will bond.  We use essentially the same scuffing process for the side walls, underbelly, and roof.

TCM: When during the manufacturing process is Line X applied?

Pat: Line-X is applied before the camper is assembled.  We build and vacuum bond laminate the side walls, wing walls, and floors separately.  Then those components are scuffed and brought to the in-house Line-X booth to be sprayed.  When dry, the Line-X treated components are then brought to the truck camper production line where they are assembled.

Above: Currently the Body Armor Edition is only offered on the 2016 Palomino SS-550 model (shown) – click to enlarge

TCM: Will Palomino be making Body Armor Editions of both pop-up and hard side Palomino models?

Pat: If the 2016 Palomino SS-550 Body Armor Edition is well received, we will extend the number of Palomino models available as Body Armor Editions.  Right now we are focused on the SS-550, and plan to branch out into our pop-up models.  It is possible that we could offer a hard side Body Armor Edition, but we are starting with the SS-550.

Body-Armor-Line-X-weight

Above: The Line-X treatment added about 18-pounds to the SS-550 – click to enlarge

TCM: Does the Rieco-Titan electric roof lift system work well with the additional roof weight of the Line-X?

Pat: Believe it or not, the Line-X treatment only adds about 18-pounds to the total weight of the SS-550.  Line-X does not require a thick and heavy coating to be 100% effective.

The Rieco-Titan electric roof lift system is rated for 300 pounds for each of the four individual lifts, so the additional few pounds added to the roof by the Line-X application are not an issue.

Body-Armor-Line-X-exterior-rear-2

Above: The Body Armor Editions feature minimal graphics – click to enlarge

TCM: Other than the Line-X treatment, is there anything else that distinguishes a Body Armor edition?

Pat: The Line-X coating and minimal graphics package differentiate the Body Armor package.  That’s it.

Above: The seams and external features of the Body Armor Editions are caulked and sealed – click to enlarge

TCM: Why not Line-X everything but the windows and, in theory, get rid of the need to caulk and seal?

Pat: That’s an interesting concept, but there are a number of production logistics that prevent us from doing that.  There are also problems with coating items like compartments, refrigerator vents, and other exterior features with Line-X.

The only way to truly eliminate water intrusion is to have no holes in the exterior structure at all.  Since no one wants a camper without windows and a door, that’s not likely to happen.

Body-Armor-Line-X-olive-color

Above: Olive green is the color of the Body Armor Edition campers – click to enlarge

TCM: Will olive drab be the only color of Line-X for the Body Armor editions?

Pat: Yes, the Body Armor Edition is only offered in olive drab green.

Body-Armor-Line-X-door-exterior-rear

TCM: Does the Line-X affect the center of gravity of a Body Armor Edition?

Pat: No.  The center of gravity is unaffected because the weight of the Line-X is distributed evenly throughout the entire exterior of the camper.

TCM: Will the Body Armor editions be special order only, or in-stock at Palomino dealerships?

Pat: Some dealers will stock the 2016 Palomino SS-550 Body Armor Edition, and others will offer it as a special order.  It really depends on the dealership, and the market their geographic area offers for pop-up truck campers.

TCM: What will the Body Armor Editions cost compared to a standard build?

Pat: The Body Armor Edition option is $3,600 MSRP for the 2016 Palomino SS-550.

TCM: Wow, that seems expensive.

Pat: Line-X an expensive option.  Just ask anyone who has Line-X treated their truck beds.  Of course the quality and durability of the Line-X is well known.

TCM: Will the Body Armor Edition option be the same price if and when it’s offered on other Palomino models?

Pat: No, it will have different cost depending on the model.  Right now we have calculated the cost for the SS-550.  When the other models become available as Body Armor Editions, we will send you the option prices.

TCM: What is the warranty Body Armor Edition campers?

Pat: The Body Armor Editions are covered by Palomino RV’s one year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

TCM: When will the Body Armor Editions be available?

Pat: You can get a Body Armor Edition in late 2015/early 2016.

What are the 10 Best Travel Trailer Brands and Models?

Published on May 23rd, 2022 by Ray & Tammy Roman This post was updated on October 5th, 2023

One of the most frequent questions we get from new and experienced RV enthusiasts alike is: What are the best travel trailer brands to consider buying? This is a crucial consideration because your travel trailer is more than just a vehicle—it’s your home on wheels. Let’s explore some brands that consistently receive high marks for quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction.

Discovering the Best Travel Trailer Brands in 2023: A Guide for Every RVer

Deciding on “the best brand” of anything is subjective. The answer is as unique as you are. Discovering it largely depends on your specific RV travel needs, budget, family size, and personal preferences. he answer also depends on finding the  best truck for your camper .

Over the years my picks for the best travel trailers tends to remain unchanged. Many new brands are on the market, but they have not been around long enough to properly assess their quality. Each of the best travel trailer brands in our list has developed a unique approach to comfort, efficiency, and style.

The Gold Standard: How Do You Choose the Best Travel Trailer Brands of 2023?

What distinguishes the elite from the average in the world of travel trailers? After analyzing feedback from RV enthusiasts and combing through industry reviews, we have identified three things to keep in mind as you shop for your ultimate travel trailer brand.

1. Road-Tested Reliability

When it comes to RVs, it’s not a question of if you’ll encounter issues, but when. With that in mind, the reliability of a travel trailer should be your most critical consideration. The most trusted travel trailer brands inspire confidence based on sterling reviews. That feedback isn’t just from RV industry cheerleaders, but from the real experts – everyday RV owners like you and me.

Don’t fall for the shiny objects shown in walk-through YouTube reviews. Instead, dig deeper and seek out firsthand experiences from actual owners. Start with RV communities such as the iRV2 Discussion Forums . This is one of many excellent ways to get unbiased ratings and insights from owners of the brands you are curious about. Start engaging in discussions about the real-world performance and reliability of the camper you’re interested in.

2. Value for Your Money

Price matters, but not always in the way you might think. While we all love a bargain, when it comes to travel trailers that a lower sticker price can often be a sign of mass production that leads to compromised quality. As with any purchase, affordability is important, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of quality. The best travel trailer brands offer the highest value for the price point with above-average durability, thoughtful design, and overall quality.

3. Customer-First Service

The best travel trailers in the world can’t make up for a poor customer service experience. When investing in a travel trailer, you’re not just buying an RV. You are entering into a relationship. The industry’s top-tier travel trailer brands on our list understand this and prioritize customer satisfaction. From the initial contact with the manufacturer to after-sales support from the dealer and any warranty work in the future, they make it a prioirty to keep customers happy.

Not all travel trailer brands or their affiliated dealers shine in this area. Explore Google reviews about your local RV dealers that carry the brand you are considering. An overwhelming amount of negative customer feedback may be a telltale sign to look elsewhere.

The Top 10 Best Travel Trailer Brands List

Choosing the best RV trailer brands isn’t easy. There are hundreds of trailer brands and thousands of models. I selected these brands and models based on hundreds of RV user reviews. The following list of camper brands is known for their commitment to quality and value. They are also known for providing excellent customer service and timely warranty repairs. Here are the manufacturers that make our cut.

Now let’s review these brands and their best models to consider buying for your next travel trailer purchase. Remember, take your time to research, visit dealerships, attend RV shows, and even rent different models. This will give you a feel for what suits you best. The adventure of RVing begins even before you hit the road. It starts right here with the exciting process of choosing your home on wheels from among the best travel trailer brands in 2023.

#1. Airstream Flying Cloud

#2. grand design rv imagine.

Grand Design RV is another one of the best travel trailer brands. They have a loyal and raving fan base that considers their travel trailers some better overall brands in the industry.

Happy Grand Design Travel Trailer owners (Image: @AKA…Neil, iRV2 Forums member)

I have seen many owner reviews of Grand Design campers who rave about the quality of these units and the outstanding customer service. For me, a list of the best travel trailer brands would not be complete without Grand Design.

The company is located in Middlebury, IN. All their towables and fifth wheels come with a 3-year limited structural warranty. Imagine XLS is one of my favorites due to its excellent styling, features, and amenities. Grand Design has only been around since 2001 and today it operates as an independent business within Winnebago Industries. This line of campers is definitely on our short list of the best travel trailer brands in 2023.

Why I Recommend the Grand Design Imagine

The Imagine travel trailer line is my preferred bumper-pull from this RV manufacturer. There are several reasons I like the Imagine trailer. First off, it comes in 21 different floor plans. Even the smallest model comes with a queen-sized bed. There is no way I would want a travel trailer with anything smaller than a queen bed.

Grand Design Imagine Specifications

11 different floor plans in 3 lines, length: from 19 ft 11-inches to 36-feet 11-inches, one-piece roof membrane with 12-year warranty, arctic 4-seasons package, aluminum framed fully laminated sidewalls, uvw: 3,560 lbs to 8,394 lbs, gel-coated fiberglass exterior, double-insulated floor, roof, and front cap, heated and enclosed dump valves, factory installed rv solar power system.

The Imagine is also loaded with a ton of standard features. Here are just a few of the ones that stand out for me and for what I’m looking for:

Solid hardwood drawer fronts

Upgraded residential furniture, large double door refrigerator, large panoramic windows, residential quality countertops, 3-burner range with oven.

#3. oliver legacy elite 2.

The Oliver brand makes high-quality luxury fiberglass trailers in their Tennessee manufacturing facility. The company, which was started by twin brothers Jim and John Oliver, was formed in 2008.

Oliver manufactures fiberglass trailer with a blend of luxury and resilience that’s hard to beat. Imagine a travel trailer built like a fortress, designed to withstand whatever Mother Nature might throw at it. That’s what Oliver offers – each trailer is constructed with a double-hull fiberglass shell. This gives superior protection against all weather conditions. It’s not inexpensive, but is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality and durability.

Couple camping by a lake with Oliver Legacy Elite 2 (Image: Oliver Travel Trailers)

The company gets that we’re all different and have our own ideas about what makes the perfect RV. That’s why they offer a wide range of customization options. Whether it’s a specific floor layout, an advanced solar power system, or leather upholstery, Oliver makes it happen. It’s like getting a tailor-made suit, but this one’s an RV made to fit your camping style and needs.

The Oliver Legacy Elite 2

Inside the Legacy Elite 2 (Image: Oliver Travel Trailers)

The Oliver Legacy Elite 2 pictured above is my favorite model and probably one of their top-rated all-fiberglass campers. I like the Elite 2 for several reasons. I like that it has a dry weight of just 4,600 pounds. It can be towed with a good truck or full-size SUV. Keep in mind that 4,600 pounds is just the dry weight. For towing, you need to consider cargo weight too.

The Legacy Elite 2 comes in two-floor plans. One with twin beds and the with a dinette to 75″ x 79″ bed conversion. This model is loaded with standard features.

Oliver Legacy Elite 2 Specifications

Full custom molded interior and exterior insulated shells, plumbing, holding tanks, and drain pipes are enclosed between shells with heat to diminish the risk of freezing, quad shocks on dual dexter leaf spring axles, “nev-r-adjust” electric brakes for exceptional control and braking, molded vanity, norcold 3-way refrigerator 4.5 cubic ft. (12v, 11ov, lp), 15′ dometic awning, 22″ flat screen lcd tv, custom mounted speakers (4).

Oliver Travel Trailers are worth the money if you are shopping for a new RV. Their unique blend of luxury, superior construction, thoughtful design, customizability, and top-tier customer service, makes these fiberglass trailers a trustworthy companion on your road adventures.

#4. winnebago industries – micro minnie.

Another of our selected best travel trailers is Winnebago. With a history spanning over 50 years, Winnebago is a well-known and respected brand in the RV industry. Headquartered in Forest River, Iowa, the company builds a huge selection of RVs, including high-quality motorhomes, campers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers.

Winnebago Micro Minnie (Image: Winnebago)

Winnebago makes five popular travel trailer models as of 2023. One of the best travel trailer brands for new RVers and experienced ones alike is the Micro Minnie (which replaced the older Minnie Drop model that made our former list of the best travel trailers.

What I Like About the Micro Minnie

When it comes to striking a balance between compactness and living comfort, the Micro Minnie travel trailers hit the nail right on the head. These little marvels of RV engineering manage to pack a ton of amenities into a small, easy-to-tow package, proving that you don’t have to go big to enjoy the perks of home on the road.

Despite their size, Micro Minnies don’t skimp on the essentials. Step inside to enjoy a fully-equipped kitchen that comes with a double-door refrigerator, a three-burner stove, and even a microwave. So, whether you’re warming up last night’s leftovers or cooking a full-course meal, you’ve got everything you need right there.

Winnebago Micro Minnie Specifications

11 floor plans, exterior lengths from 20’5″ to 25’5″, interior height: 6’4″, exterior height: 10’5″, dry weight: 3,755 to 4,651, gvwr: 5,500 to 6,000 lbs., gray water holding tank capacity: 25 gal., black water holding tank capacity: 25 gal..

A key aspect of Micro Minnies’ appeal is their towability. With a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 5,500 to 6,000 pounds, depending on the model, they can be comfortably towed by a variety of vehicles. Mid-size SUVs, pickup trucks, and some of the beefier crossovers make suitable companions for these compact travel trailers.

#5. happier camper hc1.

These compact and retro lightweight travel trailers are winning the hearts of people who want a small trailer that can be towed by a typical passenger car.

Happier Camper trailers are incredibly versatile. Their “Adaptiv” furniture anf cabinetry are made as modular cubes. From the sturdy fiberglass shell to the energy-efficient appliances, every aspect of a Happier Camper trailer is thoughtfully designed for your comfort and convenience.

Happier Camper HC1 Specifications

100% double-hull insulation fiberglass, length: 10′ (shell), 13.5′ with hitch, width: 6′ 11″, exterior height: 7′ 4″, inside height: 6′ 1″, dry weight: 1,100 lbs., gvwr: 3,500 lbs., adaptive modules are all 20″ x 20″ and of varying height, rear hatch door:  54.5” w x 53.5” h.

One thing to keep in mind with the Happier Camper is that it does not have a typical toilet setup. The Happier Camper has a “ Dry Flush” toilet for RVs . That is the only drawback I see to this camper trailer. Remember, it is small, so don’t expect much room, but that is how it’s been designed. It’s modern, and makes exceptional use of the small interior.

#6. starcraft rv autumn ridge.

Another of our picks with a long history in the RV industry, Starcraft, started making metal farm equipment in 1903. In 1968 they began manufacturing campers. Today, what sets Starcraft apart from other small, affordable trailers is its smart construction. Made with TuffShell, Starcraft’s unique fiberglass wall construction, all Starcraft trailers give superior durability while remaining lightweight. This combination not only extends the lifespan of the RV but also makes towing a breeze, whether you tow with a full-size pickup or a mid-size SUV.

After dinner, you can relax in the comfortable seating area, perhaps catch a show on the LED TV.

What Makes The Autumn Ridge a Best Travel Trailer?

Prior to the Autumn Ridge, the 2019 Starcraft Mossy Oak travel trailer was my preferred choice. This was a spacious camper available in 11-floor plans, including several travel trailer models with bunk beds . The Mossy Oak came in lengths from 23’4″ to 36’5″, making it the best predecessor of the Starcraft Autumn Ridge. This new model has many choices for RV buyers, with features that will make you want to own one too.

Lance is confident about their RVs. In addition to the 1-year limited warranty on every trailer or truck camper they make, the company also offers a 2-year structural warranty on all models. Overall I consider Lance one of the Top 5 best travel trailer brands in the industry.

What I Like About The Lance Camper 1685

Of the 12 models of travel trailers Lance Campers makes in 2023, I like the 1685 model est. There are several reasons. The 1685 is one of their lightest travel trailer models, featuring a dry weight of just 4,690 pounds. The interior is roomy and has lots of storage space available, and the floor plan is intelligently designed and laid out for maximum space efficiency. It includes a wet bath which I have stated before, is one of my personal preferences in any RV we buy.

Lance Camper 1685 Specifications

Gvwr: 6300 lbs, gross dry weight: 4690 lbs., hitch dry weight: 575 lbs., overall length: 21’5”, exterior height: 10’2”, convertible dinette bed: 54” x 78”, fresh tank: 45 gal., grey tank: 40 gal., black tank: 40 gal., refrigerator: 6 cu. ft..

For a small travel trailer, the Lance Camper 1685 is outfitted with generous holding tank capacities. This reduces the frequency of water refills and dump station visits.

#8. shasta rv 18fq.

A division of Forest River, Shasta travel trailers have been a reliable companion for road travelers since 1941. If you’ve been camping a long time, the toaster-like look of the original Shaster brings back memories. What I love about Shasta trailers is they’re a great buy for the money.

Shasta trailers offer a wide range of towing capacities. Because these campers are crafted with a sturdy, lightweight aluminum exterior, they are durable but don’t add extra weight. Whether you already own a large truck for towing, or a family SUV, these campers are a great choice for anyone just starting their RV journey. Experienced RVers looking for an upgrade also find them a great fit.

Why You Should Consider the Shasta 18FQ

Over the years, Shasta has trimmed their travel trailer line to just the Shasta model, which is available as a typical pull-behind and a travel trailer tow hauler. The pull-behind is available in a whopping 14 different floor plans. Of all those plans, my favorite is the 18FQ.

The 18FQ is very well laid out. Stepping inside, you can’t help but appreciate the attention to detail. Kitchens come equipped with a three-burner cooktop, a generous refrigerator, and a microwave oven, giving you all the conveniences of a home kitchen on the road. The 18FQ includes a 60″ x 74″ bed mattress with overhead storage space above and a clothes wardrobe on either side. It has a dry bath with a separate toilet and shower, medicine cabinet and a linen closet.

Shasta 18FQ Specifications

Gvwr: 5,050 lbs,, gross dry weight: 3,489 lbs., hitch dry weight: 375 lbs., overall length: 23’1”, exterior height: 10’6”, r-7 fiberglass insulation in walls, floor and roof, .024/.030 aluminum exterior skin, black tank: 30 gal., 3-burner cook top stove with glass cover.

Comfortable sleeping arrangements, quality upholstery, and thoughtful layouts in Shasta trailers set up a homely environment that helps you relax after a day of exploration. You’ll keep comfy in any season with the 18FQ’s efficient climate control system, featuring ducted heating and optional air conditioning units. If you’re in search of a reliable, value-packed travel trailer that can match your love for the open road, a Shasta travel trailer is worth considering.

#9. jayco jay flight slx.

With over 50 years of industry experience, Jayco has been one of the better brands in the RV industry. They have a loyal following and have always been very responsive to their customers. In 2016 Jayco was purchased by Thor Industries, which owns Airstream, among many other companies. Jayco’s quality, service, and customer responsiveness remain intact after the purchase by one of the world’s largest RV industry manufacturers.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 2023 (Image: Jayco)

he Jay Flight SLX series is one of Jayco’s top-selling lines. These campers tick all the boxes for both beginner and experienced RVers, by making travel trailers that are easy to tow, durable, and feature-packed.

Why I Like The Jay Flight SLX

Of all the travel trailer models Jayco manufactures, I prefer the Jay Flight SLX. First off, it’s not a huge camper and very light for its size. This makes the SLX very manageable when it comes to towing. In 2023 the Jay Flight SLX is available in 5 floorplans. The floorplan choices offer something for every RVer, including bunkhouse and queen bed walk around models. Two models have slideouts.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX interior (Image: Jayco)

Some of the models feature a Simmons queen-size mattress which is a very comfortable camping mattress. I like that every Jay Flight SLX features a dry bath which is always nice. The bunk beds included in some models have a 4-inch mattress and a weight capacity of 300-pounds.

The galley has standard features such as two-range burners, a three cubic-foot fridge, a microwave, and solid-surface countertops. Chances are you are going to find a plan that works for your camping needs

Jayco Jay Flight Specifications

Unloaded vehicle weight: 2,415 – 2,890 lbs., cargo carrying capacity: 615 – 860 lbs., gross vehicle weight rating: 2,995 – 3,750 lbs., exterior length: 16′ 6″ to 21′ 8″, exterior height w/ a/c: 111 – 1/4″ to 111- 3/4″, interior height (living area): 73″, magnum truss™ roof system & diflex ii material, wall-mounted 8,000-btu a/c, grey tank: 20 gal., black tank: 20 gal., 2-burner cook top stove with microwave, 7 cu. ft. gas/electric refrigerator.

The Jayco Jay Flight SLX offers a perfect entry point for beginner RVers, and a refreshing alternative for more experienced ones, thanks to its balance between ease-of-use, comfort, and construction quality.

Destination X

Adventure travel series Destination X has been officially picked up to series by NBC .

The show is expected to air on the network in 2025 and the U.S. version of the Belgian format will be produced by production company Twofour , which is also making a separate British version for the BBC.

The BBC greenlit its own version last year with Twofour producing.

It is a similar model employed on breakout mystery format The Traitors.

Destination X sees a group of contestants go on the road trip of a lifetime but they have no idea of their location. In order to win, they must figure out their mystery locations. Once they’re on the blacked-out Destination X bus, the journey turns into a real-life game board, with challenges designed to offer clues as to their location, along with a few misdirects to keep them guessing.

At the end of each episode, the contestant who places an X on a map furthest from the actual location packs their bags. The first participant to reach Destination X will be crowned the winner.

Twofour, which is owned by British broadcaster ITV, is behind series such as Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveller . It will co-produce the NBC version with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Production will begin later this year.

Caroline Davies, Andy Cadman, Dan Adamson and David Clews will exec produce the NBC version.

“ Destination X is one of the most unique and innovative formats we’ve seen in a long time, and it’s so big we partnered with the BBC again to shoot two shows at once,” said Corie Henson, EVP, Unscripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “This show is an epic international travel adventure combined with the ultimate guessing game. Even if you’ve never been on a plane, you can play along.”

“The entire Twofour team couldn’t be more proud to have won the tender to produce this incredible adventure format, particularly given the pedigree of the other companies in the process,” said Dan Adamson, Twofour MD. “Our editorial ambition for this project is fortunately matched by our best-in-class production team, who constantly make the impossible possible. We are excited to be on this journey with our talented producing partners at UTAS and grateful to the brilliant commissioning teams at both NBCU and the BBC for the hard work and creativity they have already put into the process.”

Why the East Coast Earthquake Covered So Much Ground

Two people outside looking at the NYC skyline

Friday morning at around 10:30 local time, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake popped three miles below Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. Though nowhere near the magnitude of the West Coast’s monster quakes, the seismic waves traveled hundreds of miles, jostling not just nearby New York City, but Philadelphia and Boston and Washington, DC. The United States Geological Survey is urging the region to prepare for aftershocks of smaller magnitude.

For a region not accustomed to earthquakes, it was a jolt. Its wide-ranging impact turns out to be not a quirk, but a byproduct of the East Coast’s unique geology of ancient fault lines and rock composition.

“Earthquakes in this region are uncommon, but not unexpected,” said seismologist Paul Earle, of the USGS National Earthquake Information Center, on a press call Friday. “Earthquakes on the East Coast are felt much farther—four or five times farther—than a similar earthquake on the West Coast.”

Back in 2011, for instance, people felt the shock of a 5.8 quake in Virginia from up to 600 miles away, whereas a 6.8 a few years later in Napa, California—which produced twice as much energy— traveled less than half that distance . Given how much more densely populated the East Coast is than the West Coast, that means a whole lot of people over a much wider area will feel at least a little shaking, even if the magnitude is significantly smaller than something like a Loma Prieta earthquake, which devastated the Bay Area in 1989 .

Jostled East Coasters can blame the geology underneath their feet. On the West Coast, a vast web of faults pop off all the time along an active plate boundary, sending shocks across the landscape. “We have new faults forming, we have old faults taking on strain and rupturing in big earthquakes,” says Columbia University structural geologist Folarin Kolawole.

But when an earthquake happens in a given fault, there are neighboring faults through which the energy is distributed. Basically, because the western US has so many faults along an active plate, it has a lot of channels to absorb earthquake energy—subterranean shock-absorbers, of sorts.

While the USGS hasn’t yet pinpointed the exact fault responsible for today’s earthquake, it occurred in a region where the fault system is more static than on the West Coast. It appears an inactive fault was reactivated Friday morning under New Jersey, somewhere in the Ramapo fault system.

The relative stability of the East Coast fault system is due to its geological age: Its rocks formed hundreds of millions of years before rocks on the West Coast. Geologically speaking, the East Coast is a quiet old man, while the West Coast is a rambunctious teenager.

“We don't have that tectonic complexity on the East Coast,” says Gregory Mountain, a geophysicist at Rutgers University. “We had it in the geologic past, hundreds of millions of years ago, but things are pretty well solidified—is one way to call it—and stabilized. For that reason, on the East Coast, seismic energy could actually probably travel quite a bit farther and have less energy loss with distance.”

The Hacking Lawsuit Looming Over Truth Social

William Turton

The region doesn’t have the plentiful active faults that the West Coast has to attenuate the shaking we feel at the surface. The ancient eastern faults have also stored up a lot of energy over time. “They've had a long time to heal and strengthen,” says Kolawole, “so the rock can rupture big quakes.” While 4.8 is a far cry from a 7.0, it still takes an astonishing amount of energy to shake picture frames hundreds of miles away.

Once that energy is released on the East Coast, it travels through harder rock than it would in California. Manhattan and Queens, for instance, are sitting on bedrock. “So when you have earthquakes in this region, they can travel really fast,” says Kolawole. In California, by contrast, there’s sedimentary cover on that bedrock. “There you have a lot of vibration and shaking, but earthquake energy does not travel as fast as you have it here.”

Friday’s earthquake may come as a literal and metaphorical shock for East Coasters, but bigger ones have happened in the region before, like a 5.3 magnitude in 1884. In the near term, the region may feel aftershocks for days or months. Longer term, it’s only a matter of time before an even bigger earthquake hits. “It's not impossible, it's just uncommon,” says Kolawole. “And it does signal the potential for a larger magnitude earthquake within this region.”

And when that happens, you’ll almost certainly feel it from hundreds of miles away.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

travel trailer line x

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

travel trailer line x

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

travel trailer line x

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

travel trailer line x

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

travel trailer line x

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

travel trailer line x

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

travel trailer line x

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

travel trailer line x

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

travel trailer line x

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

‘I can’t tell you how I feel’: Retirees duped out of hundreds of dollars by 3rd-party travel company

PHOENIX ( KPHO /Gray News) - An Arizona couple says a travel company they didn’t know they were using has cost them hundreds of dollars.

Judy Overmeyer and her husband Michael are enjoying their retirement life in San Tan Valley.

However, the one activity they long for is spending time with their numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom live out of state.

So, they contacted Southwest Airlines and booked a trip to Salt Lake City to see family in June. The cost of the airfare was $719.

But something unexpected came up, and they had to reschedule their June flight to July.

The Overmeyers then went online, and after searching for Southwest Airlines’ phone number, they called to change their flight.

However, Judy Overmeyer said she was charged $851 on top of the $719 original fare for the change.

“I can’t tell you how I feel because I’m not allowed to say those words on air,” she said.

The $851 purchase wasn’t from Southwest Airlines but from a company called PCM Travels.

As it turns out, when Judy Overmeyer and her husband typed Southwest Airlines into a search engine looking for the reservation number, they mistakenly landed on PCM Travels.

An online consumer advocate called PCM Travels to show how easily people can get fooled. During the conversation, the advocate asked if he was calling Southwest Airlines. The representative replied that he called Southwest Airlines’ consolidated desk.

Judy Overmeyer said she didn’t realize she was dealing with PCM Travels until this report from Arizona’s Family.

Arizona’s Family also contacted PCM Travels. The company shared that it is a legitimate third-party travel company that offers convenience for travelers who don’t want to wait on hold for airline carriers.

After explaining the situation, PCM Travels refunded $500 to the Overmeyers but not the entire $851.

Representatives with the company said they didn’t see anything incorrect with the booking and were under no legal obligation to make a refund but did so because of Michael Overmeyer’s military service.

The Overmeyers said they’ll be more careful when searching for phone numbers online and are grateful to get some of their money returned from the ordeal.

Speak no evil trailer: james mcavoy terrorizes family friends in danish horror remake.

CinemaCon offers a closer look at the upcoming Blumhouse horror movie Speak No Evil, which is a remake of the Danish movie of the same name.

  • CinemaCon offers a closer look at Speak No Evil .
  • Speak No Evil is an upcoming remake of a 2022 Danish horror title.
  • The Woman in Black 's James Watkins is directing the movie for Blumhouse.

New details have been unveiled about Speak No Evil . The upcoming Blumhouse horror movie is a remake of the 2022 Danish movie of the same name from writer-director Christian Tafdrup, which followed a family being invited on an idyllic country getaway that quickly goes sour when tensions arise with their mysterious host family. The new movie, which was written and directed by Eden Lake and The Woman in Black 's James Watkins, features a cast that includes James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, and Scoot McNairy.

Screen Rant was in attendance at CinemaCon, where the first trailer for Blumhouse's Speak No Evil debuted before arriving online. Check it out below:

The trailer opens with the main family beginning their idyllic vacation and being invited to visit their new friends' home. Things begin to take a turn when James McAvoy's character coerces the vegetarian mother into eating some meat, and then get progressively worse and worse as various incidents happen and the couple who own the home begin to psychologically torment their guests.

How Will Speak No Evil Compare To The Original?

The movie comes out just two years after the danish speak no evil.

The new trailer offers a great deal of insight into how the American remake will be updating the original story. However, it remains to be seen if it can compare to the original Danish horror title, especially considering the fact that it is being released just two years later. While the 2022 horror movie wasn't a huge commercial hit, having only received a limited release in U.S. theaters before premiering on Shudder, the Speak No Evil reviews earned it a Certified Fresh 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes .

Speak No Evil made less than $1 million worldwide during its theatrical run.

Ultimately, the plot seems to carry out via similar beats to the original, so the place where the new movie truly shines is in giving McAvoy another opportunity to portray a Blumhouse villain . After playing Kevin Wendell Crumb, the supervillain with multiple personalities in Split and Glass , McAvoy's villainous bona fides have been well proven. However, this new character gives him a role that allows him to portray layers of sinister intent within a single personality, enhancing his menacing aura even further.

Kevin Wendell Crumb's Origin & Backstory In Split Explained

It remains to be seen how the new Speak No Evil performs upon its release. However, this trailer offers a glimpse into a twisted story that, despite being familiar to audiences who saw the original movie, offers a unique twist on a domestic drama. By honing in on more small-scale subject matter, the movie could stand out among the tentpole blockbusters being released in theaters around it.

Speak No Evil (2024)

Speak No Evil is a 2024 horror-thriller film by writer-director James Watkins. A remake of the 2022 movie Speak No Evil follows a family who head to the country for a much-needed vacation - but the situation quickly deteriorates, thrusting them into a horrific nightmare.
