The Real Meaning Behind Taylor Swift's Wildest Dreams

Even though Taylor Swift's fifth studio album, "1989," only came out in 2014, it's already a pop classic. "1989" marked the first time the singer-songwriter strayed from her country roots to venture into the world of pop, but it seemed like Swift already had it all figured out. She honored her country singer days with her phenomenal diaristic songwriting but contributed to creating the timelessly catchy pop sound of "1989" as the creative director and an executive producer. 

Unsurprisingly, the album garnered critical and commercial acclaim. With a record this iconic, it's difficult to pick a favorite song, but the ninth track, "Wildest Dreams," is a frontrunner for critics and fans alike. Naturally, everybody was overjoyed when Swift released her own version of the track in 2021, and the audio quickly went viral on TikTok. "Wildest Dreams" describes Swift's struggles trying to cherish a short-term, doomed romance as it slips through her hands. 

In a Yahoo! Live , Swift explained that the track showcases how she doesn't have an idealistic perception of love, where two people who love each other do everything to make it work and ride off into the sunset together, anymore. Instead, Swift's past relationships have led her to anticipate the end of every relationship as it begins. She shared her anxious thoughts from the time: "'When this is over, I hope you think well of me.' So, this song is about having that immediate connection with someone, and these were my vivid thoughts right as I met him."  

The song is about a reckless but memorable love affair

"Wildest Dreams" sets the tone from the minute you hit play as it starts with a foreboding sound that overpowers Taylor Swift's heartbeat sample, signifying the conflict between her head and her heart. Throughout the track, Swift reassures and warns herself in equal measure about the consequences of staying in what is clearly a tumultuous relationship. The singer-songwriter starts the first verse by addressing how she's helplessly drawn to her partner before acknowledging, "Nothing lasts forever, but this is gonna take me down." 

In the second verse, she follows the first line with "But this is getting good now" to portray her recklessness as she continues down this road. Swift also grapples with the dilemma in the chorus. She starts with a nod to her partner's good looks, follows it up with a reminder that he's not good for her, and finishes with how good he is at being bad. Finally, she considers how the relationship's end has already begun before launching into the explosive chorus, where she makes her beau promise to remember them in the best light as she watches the sunset, taking the relationship down into the sea.

As the song crescendos into its explosive bridge, Swift seems to have accepted the relationship will end. She sings about how her lover will remember the good times, asserting "Someday when you leave me, I bet these memories follow you around," which indicates that the relationship will haunt both of them.

Could 'Wildest Dreams' also be about cheating?

Due to the sultry nature of "Wildest Dreams," some fans have speculated that it might be about infidelity. This theory proposes that the romance was short-lived because either Swift or her lover was already in a relationship when they met. At the song's start, Swift's beau expresses his desire to escape to a quieter place where they can be alone. This could either reference Swift being a public figure or allude to the couple's need to skip town to be together because their partners live in the city. 

The first verse's "This is gonna take me down" could also point to Swift potentially facing reputational damage if news of their affair broke. In the second verse, she sings, "And I said 'No one has to know what we do,'" which underlines her desperate need to hide the relationship. The theory seemed even more promising after Swift released the music video for "Wildest Dreams," which tells the story of two actors who fall in love on set, but things must come to an end because Swift's paramour is married. 

It has also led many to believe the song is about Alexander Skarsgård, whom Swift met when she appeared alongside him in "The Giver." In the "Wildest Dreams" music video, Swift wears a dark wig similar to the one she wore in the film. It takes place in Africa, and "The Giver" was shot in South Africa. In addition to matching the physical description of Swift's alleged muse, Skarsgård was also reportedly dating co-star Katie Holmes.

Taylor Swift fans woke up Friday morning to find that one of her re-recorded songs had just come out… and it isn’t a teaser track for “Red (Taylor’s Version),” which is coming out in November. Instead, it was a new “Taylor’s Version” of the song “Wildest Dream” from the “1989” album, unexpectedly bumping that track ahead in the pecking order of remakes. Surprising as it was, she had a reason for that, of course.

“Hi!” she wrote on Twitter and Instagram. “Saw you guys got Wildest Dreams trending on tiktok , thought you should have my version.”

“Wildest Dreams” has been rising in popularity on TikTok because of its association with a “slow zoom” filter on the service. Rather than have the prior Big Machine rendering of the song benefit from the surge, Swift decided to rush-release her new version of the song, which presumably otherwise would have been held for whenever her full “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” would have been set to come out in her gradual rollout of complete-album remakes.

Production credits that were released along with the track on DSPs seem to solve the mystery of who would be co-producing “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” with her. The producers are listed as Christopher Rowe, Shellback and Swift. Shellback co-produced the original 2014 version with Max Martin, who apparently did not make the return trip to work on this re-recording. (Martin remains listed as a co-writer along with Shellback and Swift, of course.) Rowe has been credited with working on the previous full re-recording Swift has put out, the “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” album.

Swift had more fun with the unexpected sequence of events on her TikTok events — possibly reflecting just how hasty her decision to go ahead and put out a new “Wildest Dreams” was. Initially on Friday morning, she only posted a 14-second excerpt of the fresh recording on the service, writing, “Some said slow zoom makes you look like the main character I said make it Taylor’s Version pls… Felt cute might drop the whole song later.” That soon proved to be the case. In a subsequent, separate TikTok video, she posted footage of herself in overalls with the caption, “You set a date in November with Red but then someone mentions 1989.” She appears distracted, and then the video cuts to her in a more glamorous mode, with bright red lipstick and sunglasses, a la the “1989” imagery, winking at the camera.

“Red (Taylor’s Version)” is set for Nov. 19 release. Although the album is up for pre-order, no singles from that collection have been issued as of yet.

In its original version from seven years ago, “Wildest Dreams” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went to No. 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Top 40 charts.

Taylor Swift shares ‘Eras Tour’ rehearsals video – could ‘Tortured Poets’ be added to the setlist?

Taylor Swift has shared a video from rehearsals for the ‘Eras Tour’ , with fans speculating that her new album could be added to the setlist. Watch below.

The pop star is due to begin the European and UK/Ireland leg of her huge career-spanning tour in Paris on May 9. Since wrapping up the previous run of shows in early March, Swift has released her 11th studio record ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ .

So far, the singer has largely stuck to the same 45-track set – separated into her many eras and albums, and including an acoustic ‘surprise songs’ segment .

Swift has now posted some behind-the-scenes footage of herself in rehearsals for her next ‘Eras Tour’ leg, captioning it: “A fortnight til Paris”. The clip is soundtracked by ‘Fortnight’ , her collaborative single with Post Malone .

This has fuelled ongoing rumours that a setlist change could be in the works to incorporate the current ‘Tortured Poets’ era.

“TTPD in the setlist??? I have never been more happy that the Canadian dates were added to the tour late,” wrote one fan on Reddit in response to the video. A second said: “I just KNEW there was no way she wouldn’t add TPD to the setlist!!”

Another Swiftie said they were “so surprised” that the singer appeared to be adding her new songs: “I don’t know why, she loves to do exciting unexpected stuff like this. I just figured it would be too difficult to add it in this far into the tour.”

Others have expressed their concerns over which tracks could potentially be cut.

“I think the songs she cut from the ‘Eras Tour’ movie are what she’s going to cut to put TTPD in,” a Swiftie theorised. “So ‘Cardigan’, ‘The Archer’, ‘Wildest Dreams’…”

Someone else wrote: “Do we think she’ll remove anything to make room for it? It’s already suuuch a long show, surely a whole new set would add 10-15 extra minutes minimum.”

A user on X/Twitter spotted a silver stage railing in the YouTube footage that looks like the ‘TTPD’ logo. Another shot appears to show Swift wearing the same shoes from the ‘Fortnight’ music video.

Some fans have noted that the rehearsals clip seemingly contains new choreography and costumes too. Elsewhere, a Swiftie wrote: “Taylor teased this white microphone before the tour began but it hasn’t had a place in the show… until now!!!”

In response, someone posted: “This is what she means when she says she plans easter eggs far in advance. AHHHHH!!!!”

This summer will see Swift bring her massive ‘Eras Tour’ to Wembley Stadium in London, where she’ll play eight sold-out concerts  with  Paramore .

In a new interview, Florence Welch – who features on the ‘Tortured Poets’ song ‘Florida!!!’ – hinted that she could make a surprise appearance on stage in the capital.

It is widely believed that The 1975 frontman Matty Healy is the subject of several songs on Swift’s new album, namely its title track and ‘The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived’ among others.

In a three-star review of ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ , NME wrote: “Swift seems to be in tireless pursuit for superstardom, yet the negative public opinion it can come with irks her, and it’s a tired theme now plaguing her discography and leaving little room for the poignant lyrical observations she excels at.

“It’s why the pitfalls that mire her 11th studio album are all the more disappointing — she’s proven time and time again she can do better.”

Shortly after the album’s release, Swift surprise-dropped an extended ‘Anthology’ edition of the record .

The Eras Tour countdown is on. Fans are eagerly anticipating  Taylor Swift 's return to the stage next month when she brings her epic three-hour-plus live show to Paris, France, performing live for the first time since dropping The Tortured Poets Department  last week.

On Thursday, Swift released a collection of new behind-the-scenes videos from what appears to be recent tour rehearsals. The black-and-white clips are set to her current single, " Fortnight " featuring  Post Malone , as part of her ongoing #ForAFortnightChallenge on YouTube Shorts. 

"A fortnight 'til Paris," she captioned the post. The term "Fortnight" refers to a period of two weeks, and her first of four Eras shows at Paris La Défense Arena is set to begin on Thursday, May 9. 

Swifties wasted no time dissecting the images, taking note of what appears to be new props that could indicate the addition of TTPD songs to her already extensive setlist. 

In one shot, Swift appears to stand before a sign that looks quite similar to her TTPD logo. In another, her background dancers all wear top hats that have not been included in previous performances. 

It's not clear whether Swift would simply add new material to her existing setlist, or cut some of her older songs. It's worth noting that when she released her concert film,  Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , in October, she nixed multiple songs from the theatrical version, including "The Archer," "Long Live," "Cardigan" and "Wildest Dreams." 

Swift's upcoming Eras Tour international dates will bring her across Europe and the U.K. before she returns home to North America in the fall. For her summer dates overseas, she'll be joined by longtime friend Hayley Williams ' band Paramore . The musicians recently collaborated on Swift's "From the Vault" track, "Castles Crumbling," on  Speak Now (Taylor's Version) .

Swift's 11th studio album was released on Friday, April 19, to much fanfare. 

In terms of traditional album sales,  Billboard  reports that Swift's  TTPD  sold 1.4 million copies --  including CD, vinyl, cassette and digital download versions -- in its first day alone. This surpasses her own biggest sales week, when  1989 (Taylor's Version)  sold 1.359 million copies. All signs indicate that  TTPD  will be making a massive, record-shattering debut  when tracking for its first week is reported.

The 31-track collection --  which turned out to be a surprise double album  -- features a hefty helping of  heartbreak songs  following her splits from  Joe Alwyn  and  Matty Healy , as well as a few  sweet love songs  amid her current relationship with  Travis Kelce . 

"She has put her heart and soul into the music, just like with everything she does," a source told ET about the album, "and can't wait for her fans to listen to it and to share it with them."

As far as Kelce is concerned, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end  recently confirmed to ET he'll be there with bells on  for Swift's upcoming performances. 

"There won't be a bad show, I promise you that," he said. "You know I gotta go support." 

Kelce is also set to host his second annual  Kelce Jam  on May 18 in Kansas City.

All the proof Taylor Swift is making first major change to Eras Tour

Welcome to "The Tortured Poets Department" (Eras Tour Version).

It looks like Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour is getting a brand new era, straight from the Tortured Poets Department .

Since the announcement of her new 11th studio album ( which dropped April 19 ), fans have been anxiously waiting to see if her worldwide, career-spanning tour would get a shakeup to accommodate the new music. While Swift is remaining mum, and a rep for the singer didn't respond to an EW request for comment, a new YouTube Short posted to Swift's account seems to provide all the clarity Swifties needed that a change is imminent.

In the video, which is part of Swift's #ForAFortnightChallenge tied to the album's first single, "Fortnight," the 14-time Grammy winner can be seen rehearsing for tour with her backup dancers. While some shots are obviously from the Folklore , Lover , and other existing "eras" of the show, several blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments have never been seen before.

In one, Swift, clad in workout gear, appears to be wearing the same boots seen in her "Fortnight" video . She's holding on to a banister that looks like it has the Tortured Poets Department emblem on it — the "P" and the "D" can just be made out.

Although the video is in grayscale, and therefore exact colors are impossible to identify for sure, several shots feature what looks like a new white-ish mic, which has never been seen before. The new era's color, of course, is also an off-white hue.

Perhaps the most interesting moment of the new clip, though, is one that features what looks like new choreography and costumes. Swift's backup dancers can be seen in top hats and dancing with canes, while she sings in the front middle of the group — choreography and props which have so far not been featured in the concert.

This is all speculative until the tour resumes in Paris, France, on May 9, of course, but if Swift is adding a whole new era, it would mark the first major change to the setlist since Swift began performing it last March.

Throughout the tour, she's made little swaps here or there: She added performances with some of the artists who opened for her like HAIM or Phoebe Bridgers, and she added "Long Live" to the Speak Now section when that re-recorded album released during tour. She also swapped out "Invisible String" for the "The 1" in the Folklore section after news of her split with Joe Alwyn broke.

But, nothing has majorly been added or subtracted from the show, which is already a whopping three-and-a-half hours long. Now, if anyone could pull off adding more runtime to Eras, it's the "Mastermind" herself, but it's more likely that some songs will be getting cut to make room for new material. Fans have theorized that the tracks that didn't make it into the VOD rental of the Eras Tour concert film — "The Archer," "Wildest Dreams," "Cardigan," and "Long Live" — could be first on the chopping block, but we'll just have to wait and see what Ms. Swift has up her cryptic and Machiavellian sleeve.

After Covid shut down AMC and the rest of the globe’s multiplexes and the actors strike ratcheted down the box office, you could say that the No. 1 exhibitor was taking its fate into its own hands with Taylor Swift: The Era’s Tour . However, it has Scott Swift, Taylor Swift’s father, to thank. He reportedly made the call to AMC CEO Adam Aron to sidestep studios and gain more cash in taking his daughter’s movie from her $1 billion-plus-selling, sold-out concert tour directly to AMC. Why have a studio walk away with a ton of cash and spend tens of millions in marketing when Swift with a then-near-400 million social media followers is the best form of advertisement? She tweeted a few times to promote the movie, and showed up at her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs games to drum up her $15M Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film as a must-see. The movie also received a SAG-AFTRA waiver, which allowed the pop star to show up at her own Los Angeles world premiere and do publicity. The result: $100M in global advance ticket sales. AMC, to avoid antitrust issues, hired Gotham-based distributor Variance Films to book cinemas across the nation, and Trafalgar to handle the overseas release. Much to the chagrin of the studios, who had their thing to say about Aron’s entry into the distribution business, they all started moving their movies away (i.e., Universal’s The Exorcist reboot, Lionsgate’s Ordinary Angels ) from Eras Tour and its arrival on the calendar October 13. Swift cleverly tailored her marketing to fans, releasing the movie on a date that reps her lucky number, with tickets priced at $13.13 for children and seniors. Initially she wasn’t going to preview the movie, looking to open hard on 10/13. At the last minute, during the week of release, Swift changed her mind and opted for last-minute Thursday previews (they only yielded $2.8M).

Emily blunt, a self-proclaimed colossal swiftie, recently shared a sweet compliment taylor swift paid to her and john krasinski’s daughter..

Emily Blunt 's daughter might not look like Clara Bow , but Taylor Swift  still thought she was dazzling. 

The Fall Guy actress recently detailed an encounter her and John Krasinski 's eldest daughter  Hazel , 10, had with the "Fortnight" singer. 

"She's the nicest," Emily said of Taylor on the April 29 episode of Howard Stern . "She was so nice to my kids. My oldest kid has just cut all of her hair off, this very short haircut that she was very self-conscious about. And Taylor Swift, goes like, ‘God, look at you, you're just this ‘60s Beatnik cool kid. I love your style.'"

And Emily—who also shares daughter Violet , 7, with the Office alum—said the compliment certainly made Hazel feel plucked like a rose. 

"I thought my child was going to faint," she recalled. "It was the best thing anyone has done for my child."

Gushing over Taylor once more, the Devil Wears Prada actress added, "She's very cool."

Of course, this isn't the first time Emily has spoken highly of the "Karma" singer. Earlier this month, the 41-year-old declared herself a "colossal" Swiftie, quipping, "Isn't everyone?"

And she even shared her current favorite track from the Miss Americana star's discography. 

"'Cruel Summer,'" she told Access Hollywood . "I'd say is pretty up there for me."

And while Emily now considers herself a fan of Taylor—and said she'll even attend the Eras Tour in August—the duo actually go way back.

She continued, “It really looks like her style [and] it’s actually coming back into stock in May. Maybe she’ll see it then, but it’s a beautiful one-piece with flowy legs, tight … arms and a big square neck [and] empire waist. I really feel like that’s her style, like, she could go on a date with Travis [Kelce] in it and she’d be so cute. Oh, and there’s pockets, of course!” (Swift has been dating Kelce, both 34, since summer 2023.)

Swift first showed off her lavender Pirouette skort in an April 19 social media video, pairing it with the brand’s matching corset bra and a fitted white shirt from Rumored. The skort is Ho’s “favorite” piece in her collection and seeing Swift, of whom the designer is a major fan, rock it has been her “ultimate dream.”

“I think she bought it, which is crazy because I was like, ‘How did she find out about it? Is she watching TikTok videos and getting influenced?’” Ho told Us, noting the skort was not a gift from the brand. “I have no idea, but she wore the skort in that ‘Fortnight’ video on Friday and I was in the hair bowl getting my roots retouched and dying. I was dying because this was like my ultimate dream, like ultimate ultimate ultimate. There is not another artist or celebrity in the entire world that I would rather have my designs on. That’s [been] an internal Swiftie goal of mine, so I can’t believe that dream came true.”

Ho’s dreams reached a new level when Swift sported more POPFLEX pieces in a Thursday, April 25, YouTube Short video of her Eras Tour rehearsals . In addition to dancing in the Pirouette skort and coordinating corset bra, Swift also sported the brand’s Twirl Skort and Criss-Cross Booty Shorts.

“That’s four items in one video,” Ho exclaimed. “Like, she’s wearing it so much, I can’t believe it.”

Ho has not had personal contact with Swift — save for attending one “secret sessions” listening party for 1989 back in 2014 — but is grateful for the pop star’s support of her “bootstrap” business.

“I want Taylor to know what a huge impact she has made just on me personally,” Ho said. “Like, helping me heal through heartbreak with her lyrics but then also [gives] me strength in these times when people are taking advantage of me as an entrepreneur, much like people have taken advantage of her and so when she released her rerecords with ‘Taylor’s Version.’”

Swift notably battled for control of her back catalog in 2019, inspiring her to rerecord and rerelease her past LPs so that she could own her work. Ho has dealt with similar copyright issues, watching fast fashion retailers attempt to mimic her Pirouette skort. Ho obtained a patent for the design in January.

“We [just] changed the title of the Pirouette skort to Cassey’s Version, like, ‘This is the real one, that’s not the dupe,’” she joked to Us on Friday. “It’s just like the little Swiftie things that we do.”

The lavender version of the Pirouette had sold out even before Swift was seen wearing it. As a result, Ho and her POPFLEX team decided to open a limited preorder for fans wanting to get their hands on the skirt for themselves. The new batch of Pirouette skorts will be shipped in July.

“ This preorder is gonna take a few months because we need to literally weave the fabric, color-match it back to [the lilac] color exactly so it matches what Taylor had,” Ho explained. “That’s not easy because every time in the dying process it changes a little bit, with heat [and] cutting patterns. It is really being made from scratch and … we’re trying to work as fast as we can to get Swifties their skorts. I also want to make sure that same quality remains; I don’t want to ever rush through anything.”

In addition to stitching Pirouette skorts and other POPFLEX products, Ho is focused on mentorship. She will serve as host and judge of the final stage of The UPS Store Small Biz Challenge on May 16.

“There were 6,000 small biz entrepreneurs who entered the challenge and there’ll be three finals there [in Miami],” Ho said. “I’m really excited to see who wins because, beyond the scholarship and the money, it’s about that mentorship and that’s really important. Just the support that you can get from people who really get what you’re going through because it’s tough when you’re starting out a business and oftentimes a lot of the people around you don’t believe in you or don’t think it’s going to work out, so I’m really excited to be a part of it.”

She added, “Any time it’s about entrepreneurship and any time I can help young entrepreneurs follow their dreams, much like how Taylor Swift just literally made my wildest dreams come true, I am all about helping young women and young entrepreneurs really take that leap and take the risk to follow what your heart is trying to tell you to do.”
