What brand and model of heads are recommended for my Sonor Safari Kit? I play post rock and am recording in my home studio (single large diaphram multi-patten mic technique with tube preamp, onto a Zoom R24 multi-track/interface, edited with Cubase on an iMac and KRK Rockit5 monitors. I read that my drums will sound better with upgraded heads, should I get new reso heads too? Do you know where I can get them in a pack, or should I get them individually, should I also get new heads for the kick drum?

If you do a search you will fine several detailed threads about the Safari where everything was discussed. There are several head solutions offered by folks who own Safari kits. I use a coated PS3 for bass batter with a Fiberskyn reso. I use single ply clear heads on the toms for reso's and either coated G1's, or coated Ambassador-X for batters on the toms. I gave up on the snare but I did manage to get it to sound OK with either wood hoops or 2.6mm flanged hoops. I experimented with both. Ambassador batter instead of stock head. I installed a clamp on the post of the bass drum tom holder down tube to move the mounted tom closer to the player. Here is a link to a big Safari thread. http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70426&highlight=sonor+safari

Where can you buy the Powerstroke 3 bass drum head in a 16? I see it listed on the company website, but the usual places we buy from only have it down to an 18. Would it be the same thing to just buy a 16 Tom version and put a patch on it for the beater?

I just bought a Safari kit myself. I ended up getting an Evans MX2 marching bass drum head, which I picked up from UPS last night. I decided to keep the stock resonant head for the bass. It's sold as a marching bass head, but I figured I would experiment. The head itself while listed at 14 mil feels much thicker. It comes with felt pieces that you can add and remove to adjust the amount of dampening. I put it on last night and started off with all the felt pieces in, because I like a deep and punchy kick drum sound. I tuned the batter and resonant heads as low as possible. With this head and all the dampening felts the kick is insanely punchy. I may even consider removing some felt to open the sound a little bit. At this point I haven't played it in the context of music, so I will report back when that happens.

Bo Eder said: I concur. Bass drum heads have slightly larger aluminum collars because of the size of the bass drum hoops used. Your mileage may vary though as I've seen guys buy 18" floor tom heads and use them on their 18" bass drums and sometimes they work, other times the head will pull out from under the hoops because there's not enough for the hoop to grab on to. You're best bet is always to get a bass drum head if you have bass drum hoops. Click to expand...

Actually, we had some 16" tom heads laying around from another set, and the aluminum ring is definitely smaller that the ring on the 16' head that came stock with the safari bass. Just out of curiosity I did successfully mount a 16 tom head on the safari bass, but the bass hoop does not have a great bearing surface on the smaller tom aluminum ring. It works, but I'm not sure how long it would hold given the pounding the drum head takes.

One of the reasons why I use a PS3 on my 16" Safari bass is because Remo makes a bass drum version of that head. 16" bass drums have become more popular recently so Im sure that more manufacturers will be offering 16" bass drum heads.

But I think the height of the lugs on the Safari are slightly higher to accommodate the t-rod and claws for the bass drum hoop. If you have a 16" floor tom lying around, you could try that first. Hello All, I'm new to this site and what led me here was my Sonor Safari kit that I've had for three weeks now, just wanted to pipe in on my experience with heads for it. I went with Evans G2's (two ply) for the Tom batters with Evans General Reso's (Single Ply) for the bottoms, and they sound great. the 10" tom is punchy and the floor has a beautiful deep decay, I tune to the next highest pitch at the lugs above 78 on the drum dial just so I can stay there going by pitch without having to use the dial, I tuned the floor to E with the reso a minor third higher G, and the 10" tom to B with reso a minor third higher D, these are lug pitches to be clear, sorry I didn't check the Tom tensions with the drum dial after tuning upward, but I'm guessing the tensions are around 80. For the Snare I went with an Evans General HD Dry for batter and Hazy 300 for reso, tuned to C for batter and A reso at lugs, that's close to 90 and 78 respectively on the drum dial, again I tuned upward to nearest note at the lugs so I can get back there without the dial, and it sounds great to me, a long time experienced drummer friend (40 years and went to Berklee) agreed that the snare sounds good, maybe not the greatest, what is the greatest snare sound anyway? different for everyone I would imagine, but I don't think the Safari snare tuned well with good heads is as bad as it's been said to be here and elsewhere. I will post some audio too at some point. I don't work for Evans either by the way, I imagine any two ply's would sound great, note that I do have single ply's on the bottoms. Never have I seen so much conflicting info and opinions as when I started researching anything to do with drums on the internet. So all you guys getting started take everything you read with a grain of salt. The only real way is to take the plunge and find things out for yourself. Anyway, I love the kit and so does my friend, he wants one now too.

For the Snare I went with an Evans General HD Dry for batter and Hazy 300 for reso, tuned to C for batter and A reso, that's 90 and 78 respectively for you drum dial guys, or very close to it anyways, and it sounds great to me, a long time experienced drummer friend (40 years and went to Berklee) agreed that the snare sounds good, maybe not the greatest, what is the greatest snare sound anyway? different for everyone I would imagine, but I don't think the Safari snare tuned well with good heads is as bad as it's been said to be here and elsewhere. It can sound pretty decent. It's my opinion that as the reso head approaches 80 (on drum dial) B flat and up (higher than A) the sound quality starts to go downhill. I have an Aquarian Super Kick 3 batter head and a ported Aquarian Regulator on the way for the kick, and I'll report on how it goes with those, but going by people saying not to use two ply's on the Safari toms here and elsewhere, I think it will be fine once I get it tuned. I will post some audio too at some point. I don't work for Evans either by the way, I imagine any two ply's would sound great, note that I do have single ply's on the bottoms. I've been working a lot and experimenting with heads and tuning my Safari kit mostly with the kick and getting "A Sound". Here's a rundown on heads, Toms - Evans G2 top - Bottom Evans General Res, Snare - Evans HD Dry Top - Bottom Hazy 300, Kick - Remo Emperor Clear both sides, The kick batter head has one of those things you heat up wrap around a your stiff neck against it, like a corn bag only 20" long and tubular, it has some weight to it too so it stays in place. Here's a link to just the drums this time and how they sound, I'm new to world of drums and loving it, would like to hear what you more experienced guys think of the sound I'm getting, I don't have the worlds greatest mics I've got Nady large diaphragm condensers on kick and snare and I'm using a Zoom H4n as an overhead mic over the toms 30", I've got a 57 on the 14 inch tom, and a 57 under the snare too, I know I got a long way to go playing, but the sound is important to me as I'll be recording with more experienced drummers too. Here's link to latest mix I did this morning. Would also like to hear what you think of the snare sound, as so many talk down the snare, to me it sounds pretty good, am I way off? http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12459646

  • Aug 24, 2013

This will be my final post about the safari heads. I ended up with an Ebony Pinstripe for Bass Drum Reso head, Clear Emperor for batter, the batter is muted with a tubular sand bag like object that you put around a stiff neck, works great and has some weight to it, it's also velcro'd in place. You can read other posts in this thread for rest of my heads. Here's a link to my latest recording with the Safari, so if anyone cares to, you can hear the kick, all drums are processed and I didn't tune up the snare so it's a little lower than I normally have it. The mic rundown is on my Soundclick Page, the drum track is a composite of two takes I did this morning. So weird, I'm not really a drummer I'm a guitar man. Hope you real drummers aren't PO'd with a guitar guy posting on here. Peace... http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12374184

I know I said I wouldn't comment again on heads for the Safari, but had to tell about my experience with the Evans EC2 heads on the toms. I read about them and figured I'd give them a shot and maybe I wouldn't need the moongels on my toms anymore, and that turned out to be true. They sound great, I like em a lot and plan to stick with them. They don't sound dead or muffled at all, they just sound like a well tuned drum, they sound livelier than the G2's with a moongel on em by far. I went with Clear ones. The first thing I noticed was they were louder and projected better. I think they're great and I think they do what they say they do.

The Sonor AQ2 Safari Set Shell Pack features all maple shells and compact sizes to deliver big tone from a portable kit.

Part of Sonor’s popular AQ2 range, the Safari is one of 5 different configuration options.

Featuring 100% maple shells crafted into super small sizes, this is a perfectly portable kit for the drummer on the go.

Whether you need a kit for space saving home practice or want a kit with a little footprint for small venue gigs, these drums are ideal.

The sound aiding hardware and stunning Titanium Quartz finish ensure this is a kit that delivers in both style and sound.

Sonor AQ2 Safari Set Shell Pack Configuration:

  • 16” x 15” Bass Drum
  • 13” x 6” Snare Drum
  • 10” x 7” Rack Tom
  • 13” x 12” Floor Tom
  • 1 x Tom / Cymbal Holder

Super Small

If you’ve ever had to regularly load and unload a drum kit you’ll understand the hassle that comes with it.

“I bet you wish you played flute” the joke that is inevitably made by a bystander when they see you loading in your gear.

If you’re looking to end the woes of having to cart around a heavy and bulky drum kit then look no further than the perfectly portable Sonor Safari.

This 4-piece shell pack features drum sizes that are small in both diameter and depth in order to keep the kit footprint to a minimum.

The 16” bass drum ensures a small set up size whilst still delivering punchy low-end projection.

The 10” rack tom and 13” floor tom offer well rounded tone filled with projection and full warmth.

The kit is finished off perfectly by the 13” snare which delivers cutting snap combined with fuller body thanks to its 6” depth.

The inclusion of the tom / cymbal holder allows you to mount your ride cymbal and rack tom from the bass drum, negating the need for additional bulky stands.

All of the shells in this 4-piece drum kit are constructed from 7 plies of maple to deliver brilliantly versatile, all-purpose tone.

In keeping with all the kits in the Sonor AQ2 range, the 7 plies of each shell are made up of 3 plies of Chinese maple combined with 4 plies of Canadian maple.

Maple is characterised by its even highs and mids combined with a rich, warm low-end response, making it the ideal choice for all drumming styles.

The full, warm tone serves to ensure this Sonor shell pack offers up a big sound despite its small size.

All the kits in the Sonor AQ2 range feature newly designed shell hardware which has been specifically created to ensure optimal functionality without negatively impacting the resonance of the drums.

Part of this sound aiding hardware, the Sonor SmartMount has been designed to offer secure and stable placement of the rack tom without detrimentally impacting the shell sustain.

The SmartMount system attaches to the rack tom via two lugs which allows it to float freely away from the surface of the drum shell.

This minimal contact between the shell and the mount works to ensure the shell is left unrestricted to deliver its optimal tonal response.

If you’re looking for a space saving kit that doesn’t compromise on tone, the Sonor AQ2 Safari is a great option.

The super small shell sizes ensure optimal portability while the all maple construction delivers a full, warm, versatile tone to cover all playing styles.

The compact, sound aiding hardware and stunning Titanium Quartz finish work to make sure this is a kit with functionality and style.

Sonor AQ2 Safari Set Shell Pack Key Features:

  • 7 ply All Maple Shells
  • Compact Sizes
  • Brilliantly Portable
  • Space Saving
  • Ideal for Gigging

Gratuity and Tipping Policy

If you enjoyed your safari, feel free to tip your guide. They work hard and appreciate the recognition. Please Note : If you reserved a private vehicle or made a group reservation for 10 or more, a 10% service charge is included.

Cancellation Policy

Guests can cancel a reservation within 24 hours of booking and get a full refund. Outside the 24-hour window of the initial booking, we are more than happy to help you reschedule your exploration or provide you with a gift card for the amount charged so that you can reschedule at your leisure. Please note that your gift card is entirely transferable, should you gift it to a loved one or donate it to a charity or other organization. Please note, that modifying a reservation does not restart the 24-hour cancellation timer.

Pets are not allowed at Safari West. If you have a pet that is not a service animal, we ask that you respect the important work of service animals by not claiming that your pet is a service animal. Please see the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) description of a service dog noted below. This is for your safety, as well as that of your pet, fellow guests and the animals of the Safari West collection. Please do not leave your pet locked in a parked car!

Service Animal Policy

We welcome guests with special needs who bring their service animal to enjoy our facility and the wonderful creatures making their homes here. Our policy is to assist all guests in making their time at Safari West enjoyable. A service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability. “Companion” and “comfort” dogs are not “service animals” protected by the ADA.

  • Service animals are permitted to visit Safari West. However, service animals are prohibited from all areas where our exotic collection is not separated from guests by a physical barrier.
  • Service animals may also be restricted in certain areas due to the sensitivity of our animal collection.
  • If you are spending the night, your service animal is allowed in one of our accessible tents.
  • Your service animals are restricted from accompanying guests while on tour.
  • Service animals must be housebroken.
  • Service animals may not display vicious or aggressive behavior toward other people or animals. This includes barking and/or growling. If your service animal is disruptive at any time, you will be asked to remove your service dog from the park.

If you need to bring your service animal, call (707) 579-2551 at least 72 hours in advance to make arrangements.

Safari Adventures are always in season!

Adults (18 – 61), Seniors (62+), Teens (13 – 17) and Children (4 – 12)

Please be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before your safari is scheduled to begin!

Please Note: Weekend rates apply for Holidays. These include – President’s Day • Memorial Day • Spring Break (March 18 – April 19) • Labor Day • Columbus Day •  Martin Luther King, Jr.  Day • Thanksgiving Week • Christmas Eve – New Year’s Day (closed Christmas Day)

Rules, Safety, and Etiquette

Safari West is the home of more than 800 wild animals, with all their natural behaviors and instincts. They are not trained pets, so we must act in accordance with their world rather than expecting them to understand ours. We are pleased to offer you a truly enjoyable and memorable adventure on the Sonoma Serengeti, so to get the most from your visit, please keep these few common-sense safety rules in mind and practice your wild manners.

Respect our Wild Friends

  • Please stay at least three feet back from the animal enclosures.
  • These animals are not to be touched . Be especially aware of children who may not understand that these animals are not like your pets at home. They may bite, kick or otherwise defend themselves if startled.
  • If you see anyone harassing the animals, throwing objects or poking sticks into the animal enclosures, or teasing them in any way, please alert a staff member immediately.
  • Never feed the animals. They eat special diets in the wild, and the Safari West animal staff sees that they enjoy the same appropriate foods here. Snacks that you love can be harmful to them.
  • No running! The animals interpret running as a sign of danger and are likely to panic and hurt themselves.

Safari Truck Etiquette

We recycle! Throughout the lower area of the preserve are recycling bins. Please save your plastic water bottles, soft drink cans, and other recyclables until you can dispose of them in a bin. Children who wish to sit on the top of our double-decker truck must be at least 45 inches tall. Our guides stop occasionally along the drive to allow seat changes so that everyone who wants a top-tier ride will get a turn.

Lost and Found

Safari West is not responsible for lost items. Please keep a close eye on your belongings during the course of your stay as you will be exploring a large, mostly undeveloped preserve. Should you misplace an item, Safari West maintains a Lost and Found Location at the front office. Please check with us there if you should lose (or find) anything of value.

Welcome to Safari West!

We go to great lengths to ensure that our safari adventures are accessible to everyone and in compliance with all ADA requirements. If you or a member of your family have special needs due to mobility or sensory issues, please contact us and we’ll work with you to plan your safari excursion. Safari West is indeed a special place and we will do everything possible to provide our guests with equal enjoyment of the wonderful experience offered by our park.

Our classic safari vehicles are customized Dodge Power Wagons and are not ADA accessible and unfortunately are not equipped to handle wheelchairs or other mobility assisting devices. If a guest utilizing a wheelchair can safely transfer themselves unaided or with the assistance of a family member, friend, or personal assistant, the Classic Safari Tour remains a viable option.

For guests unable to transition into the Power Wagons, we are able to provide one customized vehicle capable of accommodating most wheelchairs. It requires advanced planning and has some restrictions on seating capacity. Please contact our reservations team at 707-566-3667 to discuss options.

We currently have two fully accessible tents on the property. Both rooms are fully wheelchair accessible and include appropriately equipped showers and bathroom fixtures. These rooms also feature designated parking spaces at the foot of the ramps for easy loading and unloading. They also benefit from close proximity to the restaurant, offices, and gift shop.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome at Safari West; however, due to concerns about guest safety as well as the safety of the animal collection, service animals are restricted from all safari tours and anywhere where there isn’t a barrier between the collection and our guests. Service animals are welcome to join you in our overnight accommodations.

Hearing Impaired:

Because of the cost of live, on-demand certified interpreters, Safari West no longer pays for live, on-demand, in-person ASL interpreters.  However, guests with hearing impairments are welcome to bring their own live ASL interpreter and Safari West will waive the admission charge for the guest-provided interpreter.  Similarly, as a further reasonable accommodation, Safari West will provide a complimentary safari tour to a non-professional ASL signer for a hearing-impaired guest, e.g., friends or family members who sign for the guest.

Vision Impaired:

With advance notice, a tactile tour can be provided for a visually impaired guest. A sighted companion will almost always accompany a visually impaired visitor. Should this not be the case, the guest will be accompanied by one of our guest service personnel.

Safari West offers free parking to our guests. Our parking lot has several accessible parking spaces for disabled persons supplying a valid disability-parking placard. Additional reserved parking spaces for placarded vehicles may also be available upon arrival. If you or a member of your party has any special needs, please don’t hesitate to contact us at  707 566-3667

Let us help you plan the safari adventure of a lifetime at Safari West!

Safari Tour

400 Acres of Exploration

From cheetahs to lemurs, giraffes to wildebeest, there’s always something amazing waiting just around the bend. Alongside one of our highly-trained safari guides, head out on a 3-hour excursion to get up close and personal with nearly a thousand animals. With over ninety species making their homes here, Safari West truly is Sonoma county’s very own slice of the Serengeti.

Hit the Road

Climb aboard one of our custom safari vehicles and roll out to explore the Sonoma Serengeti. From the canvas-covered shade of the truck, go in search of the marvelous megafauna of Africa. Your expert guide will track down graceful giraffes, nimble impala, imposing cape buffalo and maybe even a few hulking rhinoceros. You never know what you’re going to find!

Take a Stroll

While the view from the safari truck guarantees a great look at the herds, some animals need a more subtle approach. On the safari walk, saunter through our vast aviary where demoiselle cranes preen along the path and scarlet ibis soar overhead. Come face-to-face with a red-ruffed lemur, search out a cleverly camouflaged cheetah and watch the courtly parade of flamingos around their lagoon home.

  10. My Sonor Safari kit, any recommendations?

Senior Member. One of the reasons why I use a PS3 on my 16" Safari bass is because Remo makes a bass drum version of that head. 16" bass drums have become more popular recently so Im sure that more manufacturers will be offering 16" bass drum heads. Aquarian offers 16" Superkick 1, I'm using one on my Fibes micro kit.
