PM Modi to visit Mumbai on January 19, 2023

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mumbai on January 19 to inaugurate the Navi Mumbai Metro’s 5.96-km stretch between Central Park and Belapur stations, as per the sources. On the same day, the 35-km stretch of Mumbai Metro’s 2A and 7 lines is also likely to be commissioned in PM Modi’s presence.

However, between 15 January and 19, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are scheduled to visit Davos to attend the World Economic Forum. There are talks, they might come back early for the Metro inauguration event or change their plan to visit Davos, which is expected to bring investment opportunities for Maharashtra.

Then Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray flagged off the first phase of the 2A and 7 lines in April 2022, the 20-km stretch from Dhanukarwadi (Kamran Nagar) to Aarey Colony in the western suburbs of Mumbai.

According to officials of Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL), once the entire stretch of these two lines with 30 stations and a 35-km elevated corridor becomes operational, it can carry nearly 3 lakh passengers per day.  MMMOCL takes care of the metro rail’s operation and maintenance.

According to sources, Modi is coming for the opening of the Dawoodi Bohra community’s Arabic Academy in Andheri East. He is expected to share the dais with His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin. An official from the community said a formal announcement will be made after the protocol formalities are done.

City BJP leaders added that the PM could also attend more programmes during his Mumbai visit. The civic elections in Mumbai and other cities are expected in a couple of months. The local BJP leaders also aim to get more infrastructure and civic projects launched by the PM which could give a boost to their pitch to the voters that the ruling BJP can develop Mumbai’s infrastructure.

Following the split in the Shiv Sena, the BJP is now aiming to give a further blow to the Thackeray-led faction by winning power in the Mumbai civic body which has ruled for Shiv Sena for close to three decades.

BJP’s victory in Mumbai civic polls would be a major setback for Thackeray. On the other hand, if Thackeray manages to win the Mumbai civic poll despite all odds, it could give a much-needed boost to him to recover lost ground following a split in his party. The results of the Mumbai civic polls would be crucial for BJP and the party is not leaving any stone unturned to win India’s richest municipal body. In his last visit, Modi launched BJP’s poll campaign by appealing to Mumbaiites to ensure that the same party rules from Delhi to Mumbai so that the development of the city could be put on the fast track. City BJP leaders are now hoping that their most popular leader would now further boost their campaign.

They are also hoping that the Dawoodi Bohra community which has a strong presence in areas of south Mumbai could support their party in civic polls.

A senior BJP leader also said that the party and bureaucrats in the state are planning if any more ground-breaking ceremonies or inauguration of projects can be done on the same day.

Meanwhile, the Anjuman Islam which has entered into its 150th year of service has also called the PM for their celebrations. It is not clear whether the PMO has accepted this or not.

Other leaders like CM Eknath Shinde and the deputy CM are going to share the stage with the PM. He is also likely to have a meeting with them later on regarding the possible expansion of the Maharashtra cabinet as the state has to do cabinet expansion before the budget session of the state legislature.

Musk to Meet Modi in India; Sources Say Announcement on Investment Likely

Reuters

FILE PHOTO: Tesla and SpaceX's CEO Elon Musk gestures, as he attends political festival Atreju organised by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia) right-wing party, in Rome, Italy, December 16, 2023. REUTERS/Guglielmo Mangiapane/File Photo

By Aditya Kalra and Aditi Shah

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Tesla chief Elon Musk said he will visit India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and two sources told Reuters the billionaire entrepreneur is expected to make an announcement on investment and a factory in the country.

"Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India!", he said in a post on X after Reuters first reported details of Musk's planned India visit this month.

The billionaire will meet Modi in the week of April 22 in New Delhi, and will separately make an announcement about his India plans, said the two sources, who declined to be named as the trip details are confidential.

Modi's office and Tesla did not respond to requests for comment. Musk's final India trip agenda could still change.

Musk would be visiting India just as it heads into a two-month-long election with nearly a billion voters, starting April 19, in which Modi is widely seen winning a rare third term.

A Tesla investment announcement during the election would bolster the business-friendly credentials of Modi, who has for years courted foreign companies to set up manufacturing operations in India and create jobs.

The Tesla CEO will be accompanied by other executives during his visit, said the first source.

Musk and Modi last met in New York in June, and Tesla for months lobbied India to lower import taxes on electric vehicles while it weighed up a factory there. India last month unveiled a new EV policy lowering import taxes to 15% from 100% on some models if a manufacturer invests at least $500 million and sets up a factory too.

Reuters has previously reported that Tesla officials are expected to visit India this month to look at sites for a manufacturing plant that would require an investment of about $2 billion.

Tesla has also begun production of right-hand drive cars at its German plant for export to India later this year, sources have said.

Musk said this week on X that "India should have electric cars like every other country has electric cars. It's a natural progression to provide Tesla electric vehicles in India".

Tesla's push into India comes as slowing EV demand in its main U.S. and Chinese markets coincides with intensifying competition from Chinese automakers. Tesla reported a drop in first-quarter deliveries that missed analyst estimates.

India's EV market is small but growing and dominated by local carmaker Tata Motors. EVs made up just 2% of total car sales in 2023. The government is targeting 30% by 2030.

Elon Musk to visit India for meeting with PM Modi

E lon Musk has announced on his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that he will visit India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi without giving a date.

The Tesla boss is expected to announce major investment plans in the country soon.

Last month, India cut import taxes on electric vehicles (EV) for global carmakers which commit to investing $500m (£399m) and starting local production within three years.

In 2021, the Tesla boss said that India's high import duties had prevented the firm from launching its cars in the world's fastest-growing major economy.

Mr Musk wrote in a post on Wednesday : "Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India!"

A senior Indian government official told the BBC that the meeting is scheduled for the last week of April and will take place at Mr Modi’s official residence in New Delhi.

The BBC understands that Tesla’s plans for starting manufacturing in India will feature in the talks.

Mr Musk's visit comes just as the country begins voting in marathon, six-week-long elections on 19 April.

Mr Modi's Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is widely expected to win a third term in power.

A Tesla investment announcement during the election would bolster the business-friendly credentials of Mr Modi, who has courted foreign companies to set up manufacturing operations in India and create jobs.

The two men met last June in New York when the technology multi-billionaire said Mr Modi had been "pushing us to make significant investments in India, which is something that we intend to do".

Tesla's plans to move into India comes at a time when the company is battling weakening sales in the US and China.

Deliveries slid sharply in the first three months of this year as Tesla grappled with a fire at its European factory, global shipping disruption and growing competition.

Tesla has cut prices repeatedly in response to increased competition from rivals such as BYD but demand in key markets like China has fallen.

Tesla's shares have lost almost a third of their value since the start of this year.

India overtook the UK in 2022 to become the world's fifth-largest economy, and grew by 8.4% in the December quarter , helped by a surging manufacturing sector.

The 110-year-old full-size marble statue of social reformer, politician, judge and scholar Mahadev Govind Ranade situated near Churchgate station abutting Oval Maidan, which now has Metro construction work site as a backdrop, is a regular sight for thousands of passers-by in their everyday hustle. However, very few would know that the memorial situated a few metre away from the Bombay High Court, where Ranade served as a judge between 1992 and 1901, represents a historical feat in Indian memorial art.

The statue, created by sculptor Ganpatrao K Mhatre, as per experts, is regarded as the first statue of an Indian social reformer or politician in India made by the first academic sculptor from Western India in the pre-independence period and the beginning of a rise of Swadeshi art movement in Indian memorial art. Two brothers were arrested for allegedly murdering a 25-year-old man in a fight outside Mumbai’s Bandra railway station after he asked for the Rs 500 that one of them had owed him, police said Friday.

An officer said that the deceased, Nizam Khan, and Shadab Khan (21) were both residents of Garib Nagar Colony in Bandra (East). Around a year ago, Shadab dropped Nizam’s mobile phone, which then stopped working. Nizam, who had to pay Rs 1,000 to get the phone repaired, asked Shadab for the money.

While Shadab paid Rs 500 to Nizam’s wife, he was yet to pay the rest, according to police. Around 11.30pm on Thursday night, a fight broke out outside the railway station between the duo when Nizam insisted that he return the Rs 500 the same day. A BJP MLA has alleged financial malpractices in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) street furniture project through which the civic body aims to install 13 types of street furniture, including benches, pole-mounted dustbins, bollards, and tree guards, to beautify the roads of Mumbai.

The civic body had floated a Rs 263 crore tender for this work through its Central Purchase Department (CPD).

Incidentally, the BMC had launched a ‘ Mumbai  Beautification Project’ after the  Eknath Shinde -Devendra Fadnavis government took over with an aim to beautify the city by upgrading the existing civic infrastructure and earmarked a Rs 1,700 crore fund for the same. Read more

More than eight months after a video of a round blob of ice forming on the Shivling inside the sanctum of the Trimbakeshwar temple went viral on social media, the Nashik rural police Wednesday registered a case against three persons who work as priests at the temple.

A special court in Mumbai recently acquitted three men of charges of gangrape in a case that it said involved a “love triangle” where the complainant had wanted to avoid any hurdle from the first accused to continue her relationship with another man whom she wished to marry.

A case was filed against the trio after a minor girl complained that she had been sexually assaulted multiple times in 2016-17 with the threat that one of the men had a video recording of the assault and that he would circulate it online. Police failed to prove in the court that any such video existed. Read more

Man held for mowing down journalist made similar attempt on an activist two years ago

Pandharinath Amberkar, arrested for  allegedly mowing down journalist Shashikant Warishe  on February 6, has a history of run-ins with persons opposed to the setting up of a refinery and petrochemicals factory in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district. Police records show he had earlier too allegedly tried to run over an anti-refinery activist.

In April 2020, the activist, Manoj Mayekar, son of the then sarpanch of Kumbhavade village where Amberkar too hails from, was injured after allegedly being hit by Amberkar’s SUV. Mayekar was in a Kolhapur hospital for two weeks. Booked after a case was filed, Amberkar was later granted bail.

Amberkar is now in the custody of Rajapur police for his alleged role in the Warishe murder case.

BMC opposes plea in HC seeking Rs 36L compensation for ‘medical negligence’ at Covid jumbo centre

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday told the Bombay High Court that a 54-year-old man who has sought Rs 36 lakh compensation for the ordeal he allegedly underwent due to “medical negligence” at the civic-run Covid-19 jumbo centre, failed to make out a case for compensation and that his plea be dismissed as non-maintainable and devoid of merit.

The BMC, through Dr Rajesh Dere, Dean at BKC jumbo Covid-centre, filed an affidavit before a division bench of Justices A S Chandurkar and M W Chandwani, in reply to plea by Deepak Shah and said the petitioner suppressed material facts and made misleading statements, and the plea be dismissed.

The Andheri resident filed a writ petition through his son, who is his authorised representative, seeking compensation for ‘incompetent and improper medical treatment’ by doctors at civic-run jumbo Covid hospital in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Who is Narendra Modi, the Indian strongman seeking a third term in the 2024 polls?

Who is Narendra Modi, the Indian strongman seeking a third term in the 2024 polls?

If on June 4 the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wins enough seats in India’s 18th parliamentary election to form the next government, as is expected, and incumbent leader Narendra Damodardas Modi becomes prime minister for the third time, future historians of India may see the era from 1947 to 2014 – from independence from the British colonial raj to when Modi first took office – as a consolidation period for nation-building and a transition period for identity-building.

More than Modi’s personal quest to equal the number of elections won by India’s first PM, Jawaharlal Nehru, the upcoming election is the story of the transformation of India that supporters and detractors alike believe will be irreversible.

Most transformationally, Modi speaks of making India a $5 trillion economy by 2027, from the current $3.5 trillion, and a $35 billion economy by 2047 – the nation’s 100th year of independence. This would mean a mammoth leap in per capita income from $2,612 (nominal, estimated for 2023) to $18,000.

RT

Chaiwala from Gujarat

Modi’s personal narrative plays a large part in his popularity among voters, particularly in northern India, where the majority of the population lives. He was born in a village in northeastern Gujarat, a state that prides itself on its mercantile tradition, into a family that was not in the top tiers of the caste pyramid – India’s stiflingly rigid social structure with strict rules for social interaction and endogamy.

His father, Damodardas Mulchand Modi, owned a tea shop, and the PM early in his electoral career used to claim that he worked selling tea at the Vadnagar railway station. This is an uncorroborated claim that Modi subsequently dropped. There is also a legend that he wrestled a baby crocodile, as told in a biographical comic, Bal Narendra .

Fyodor Lukyanov: Here’s why India has never been as important as it is now

In school, Modi was an indifferent student, shining only in school plays and religious pageants like the Ram lila , which are an annual part of small-town life. When he was an early tween, he came across the local branch of the right-wing paramilitary organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and was impressed with its regimen, its morning marches and parades, its daily oaths to Mother India, and its starched khaki shorts. He joined.

Another significant event of his teens was his marriage to Jashodaben, whom he left after three weeks , never to return. Jashodaben became a teacher, and for a long time no one knew that Modi was technically a married man – no divorce was ever sought – until muckrakers dug up this fact  after he became the BJP’s candidate for PM (helped, no doubt, by other PM hopefuls in the party). The narrative, set out by biographers, is that Modi  wandered the Himalayas in introspection .

These elements are key to Modi’s biographical narrative – his courage, his lifelong loyalty to his organization, his forsaking domesticity for higher things – much in the same way that another Gujarati, known as ‘Father of the Nation’, M.K. “Mahatma” Gandhi, set out his life story: in the four traditional stages of life in the Hindu worldview, Gandhi sought to show that he had reached the final stage of asceticism (and he dressed that way as well).

Returning to the mundane world, Modi wandered over to the RSS and worked his way up the organization. He went back to school and obtained a bachelor’s degree in “entire Political Science” (his own words, in 2016) from Delhi University in 1978 – his three-year degree course overlapping with former PM Indira Gandhi’s infamous “Emergency” rule, from 1975 to 77, during which civil liberties were suspended and opposition leaders were thrown in jail. Modi spent this period  on the run .

In the 1980s, he was seconded to the RSS’s political arm, the BJP, and reached the party’s headquarters in New Delhi. He was deputed for organizational work in the small north Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana – he was good friends with fellow RSS Manohar Lal Khattar, sitting on the back of Khattar’s scooter; Khattar was selected to be Haryana chief minister in 2014, after Modi became PM, and served for almost a decade.

RT

Most importantly, however, is that Modi caught the eye of the BJP president tightly running the party machinery, Lal Krishna Advani, who would be instrumental in Modi’s climb to political power.

This came in 2001, after a major earthquake in Bhuj, Gujarat, in which the incumbent CM, Keshubhai Patel of the BJP, had to step down. Advani sent Modi in his place, despite Modi having no prior administrative experience. Modi made it clear he would not play second fiddle to Keshubhai, and that he would either take complete control or none at all.

The Modi factor: Tourists are flocking to Varanasi to witness the electoral battle

Four months later, in February 2002, came an event that defined Modi when rioting broke out all over Gujarat following the burning of a train near the Godhra railway station . The compartment was carrying volunteers involved in the agitation for a Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which had picked up pace since the demolition of the Babri Masjid (standing at the claimed birthplace of mythological Lord Ram) in December 1992. It was passing through a Muslim slum of Godhra when the arson took place, killing 59 passengers.

In retaliation, riots broke out over the next three days all over Gujarat. The official death toll from the violence was 1,053; unofficially, the estimate was about 2,500. The perception was that Modi had allowed it to happen, including the brutal murder of a former Congress parliamentarian, who allegedly telephoned Modi as a mob was standing outside his house. The Supreme Court later  exonerated Modi.

However, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was unhappy with Modi’s “handling” of the riots, and wanted him to resign, publicly reminding him of his “raj dharma” (king’s duty). But Advani prevailed upon Vajpayee to let Modi remain, and in the next state legislative election – the first led by Modi – returned him to power overwhelmingly .

RT

Modi has never regretted the riots or his role – it was now his “brand,”  and drew a significant number of Hindus to support him. Despite being CM, he had to suffer the indignity of being denied a visa to the US  and of being overlooked at meetings by national industry bodies, but one modest Gujarati businessman came to his rescue . Gautam Adani organized several Vibrant Gujarat business summits , showcasing Modi as a development genius.

When the party was looking towards the 2014 parliamentary election, there was no mood for the old warhorse Advani, who had lost the 2009 election. Instead, BJP leaders found that all over the country, people spoke of Modi leading the party. His “brand” found more appeal in an increasingly polarized geopolitical environment. And after fatigue with the Manmohan Singh government that had been in power for a decade, the BJP, led by Modi, won a majority of parliamentary seats – the first time any party had done so since 1984 (when the late Rajiv Gandhi swept the polls after his mother Indira’s assassination).

Decade of reforms

With this mandate, Modi began implementing the very things that the RSS had been saying was on its agenda since independence. The first was a fiscal conservative approach, in which the government’s priority was to enable private industry to lead the economy . Its two favored industry strongmen were Gujarat’s biggest industrialists – Adani and Reliance Industries head Mukesh Ambani.

In November 2016, Modi suddenly demonetized high-value currency . His government gave a variety of reasons – to fight black money, to fight counterfeiting, to bring down currency in circulation, to fight terrorism, to facilitate the shift to a digital payment system – but in hindsight, none of these were achieved. Instead, four months later, the campaign began for Uttar Pradesh (UP), India’s largest state. The BJP opponents, who were believed to have had significant cash on hand for on-the-ground spending, were left with useless paper, and the BJP won resoundingly. In Indian politics, the way to Delhi is said to be through UP.

RT

That terrorism did not end was evidenced by the February 2019 attack in Pulwama in the border state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), where 40 paramilitary personnel were killed. Modi retaliated by sending fighter jets across the border , showing that his government was not shy to fight back. It helped him win the parliamentary election two months later, with an even bigger majority, and a momentous second term.

On August 5, 2019, he fulfilled a long-standing right-wing demand to end the special Constitutional status of J&K , dividing it into two Delhi-controlled union territories. Shortly thereafter, the Supreme Court of India allowed the building of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which was inaugurated by Modi in January 2024 and widely celebrated across the country.

Along the way, Modi has taken several measures to centralize power. He is in a tug-of-war with the Supreme Court over legislation to let the government have a decisive say in the appointment of judges (it is currently done by a consortium of judges). He has changed the rules of appointments to the Election Commission , removing the Chief Justice of India from the three-member appointments panel and replacing him with a government minister.

Parachute Economics: Why claims that India’s growth is hyped are at odds with the evidence

He has done away with the Planning Commission, set up by India’s first PM, and replaced it with a Niti Aayog; the Commission was a legacy of PM Nehru to formulate five-year plans , as was done in several centrally-planned economies globally, for long-term economic planning and development. He has weakened the states by eating away at their share of revenue, collected through the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He has built a new parliament, even though opposition parties claim they were not consulted .

Central agencies have gone after the government’s political opponents in the states. Under India’s constitution, policing is a state subject, and earlier, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) could only operate in a state if the local government invited it. Now, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) act unimpeded by the state governments.

In the current campaign, Modi has said this is because of his drive against corruption , but the Supreme Court this year allowed the public to see the details of the Electoral Bond scheme, something hatched by Modi’s first government. Out of $1.9 billion collected, 47% went to the BJP – from companies which had just been raided by the ED, or were threatened with legal action, or which within days were awarded lucrative contracts and tenders.

Even within his own party Modi remains first among equals. Government decisions are said to originate from the Prime Minister’s Office, as opposed to individual relevant ministries. The recent distribution of party nominations to contest the upcoming parliamentary election sent a message: all are dispensable.

RT

Work in progress

It has not all been smooth sailing for the government. A Citizenship Amendment law – ostensibly to allow Hindu refugees to settle in India – was passed but is yet to be implemented due to protests around the country. Unemployment remains a persistent problem, particularly among the youth. The economy has recovered since the Covid-19 pandemic, better than many countries in the world, but not enough to catapult India into the league of China – the middle-class Indian fantasy.

China is India’s biggest foreign policy problem. In June 2020, Indian and Chinese troops clashed in the Galwan Valley of the high-altitude mountainous Ladakh region. Twenty Indians and four Chinese soldiers died. Modi has been unwilling to admit what satellite maps show – that land that earlier lay in the no-man’s area on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has now been usurped by China.

‘He doesn’t have a home now. It was burned down by a mob’: Children from India’s Manipur bear the brunt of ethnic conflict

It has also meant that Pakistan is no longer India’s top geopolitical problem, reflecting the private view in right-wing circle that Pakistan is best kept in deep freeze for an extended period.

The big domestic headache of recent times was the Manipur violence that began in March 2023 and has cast a shadow over the election in the northeastern hill state. Modi has not visited the state once since the violence erupted – over constitutional rights for different groups in the state – but he recently asserted to a local newspaper that his government intervened in a timely manner to save the situation. Indeed, the major victims of the violence – the Christian hill tribes known as the Kuki-Zo – have announced they will boycott the election.

The thing that matters most – as shown by a recent survey by the Centre for Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) – is that India’s identity as a Hindu country has been consolidated. People may not plan to visit the Ram Temple, but they express happiness it was built.

If reelected, Modi knows what is expected of him: a transformational phase in Indian history. India already has nuclear power, a space program, heavy industry, world class universities, big infrastructure like dams and bridges – all of these were part of the nation-building that took place in 1947-2014.

What India, and therefore Modi, now aspires to do is to forge a sharp Hindu identity whose presence is noticed in the world – be it cultural, linguistic, economic or political.
