Chicago Cubs Spring Training

When the boys of summer hit the fields in Mesa, it’s our official sign that spring has sprung. Mesa is home to two spring training teams – the Chicago Cubs, which have been part of the fabric since the early 1950s.

Built in 2014, located just east of the Loop 101 freeway, Sloan Park (formerly Cubs Park) is just minutes away from all of the attractions that can be found throughout Mesa. Between the 15,000-seat ballpark and 7 practice fields, Chicago Cubs fans will be closer than ever to the Spring Training action they've always coveted.

Insider’s Guide, Tips, and Tricks to Chicago Cubs Spring Training

tours of sloan park

Cubs Insider has unique insight and perspective into the Chicago Cubs spring training experience. CI’s co-owner, Jon Ferlise, lives in Phoenix and has been going to see the Cubs play there for over 20 years. Below he shares his experiences and insights to help you make the most of your time in Arizona.

Insider tip – Look for these throughout this page. Key links are located within the text below and can also be found listed at the bottom of this page.

Sloan Park

tours of sloan park

Sloan park was opened in the spring of 2014 and has been the home of the Cubs and their annual record-breaking attendance figures  ever since. Here is your definitive guide to planning a trip to Wrigleyville West this spring.

Getting there

Sloan Park is located at 2330 West Rio Salado Parkway, Mesa, AZ, 85201. Since all of us have smartphones, all you’ll need to do is type ‘Sloan Park’ into your map app and it should pop right up.

My suggestion is to arrive off Loop 202 and exit on Dobson Rd. (Exit 10). While it’s possible to access the park from other streets/highways, Loop 202 offers the easiest in/out access to the park. Head south on Dobson and the entrance to the parking lots are about a quarter-mile down on the right (west) side.

tours of sloan park

Insider tip  – You can park in the Mesa Riverview shopping center on the left (east) side of the road for free. It’s got a very large lot with several restaurants and bars. Be sure to check out one of my favorite local bars, The Brass Tap . They offer a free shuttle service that will drop you off right in front of the first base gate, on the south side of the stadium, just west of the ticket office windows. Just inside the first base gate entrance you can stop to take a quick photo in front of the Sloan Park marquee, a replica of its big brother in Chicago.

If you decide to walk over from the parking lot, just head west and cross over Dobson Rd., continuing until you reach the stadium, which is approximately one mile away. It’s a nice little stroll through a park and past a small pond. If you’d like, you can swing into the Sheraton — on the east side of the Sloan Park parking lot — for a cold beer before heading in.

If you choose to forego the free parking options mentioned above, the field lots to the east of the park are easily accessible from Dobson Rd. Parking in the designated lots is available for $10 (reserved) or $5 (general) and will typically put you about a half-mile or less to the center field entrance.

If you’d like more official directions, check out the Cubs’ Sloan Park directions page .

The ballpark

tours of sloan park

If you’re anything like me, Sloan Park — complete with wonderful weather, friendly people, and Cubs baseball (well, yeah) — will surely win you over quickly. Above, you saw the first base gate, which serves as the main gate at the “front” of the ballpark. Just a short walk to the east, you’ll also find the main team shop, which has now been expanded to twice its original size. That’s where you can get all the Spring Training schwag (or you can  click here to buy said gear from CI partner SportsWorld Chicago  before you go) you’ll ever need.

Sometimes the team store can be packed, which is one of the big reasons they chose to expand. There was often a very long line to get in — you can only access it from inside the gates on a game day, otherwise you can go in the front doors (pictured left) — and an even longer line to get through checkout.  Insider tip – Directly to the west of Sloan Park, about a mile down Rio Salado Parkway, is an outdoor shopping center/mall called Tempe Marketplace  with a  Just Sports   store   that   normally has some decent Cubs gear. In addition, Tempe Marketplace also offers a free shuttle to/from Sloan Park on game days. I prefer the Mesa Riverview shuttle because you don’t get stuck in as much traffic getting to Sloan, but your decision may rest more on what direction you’re coming from.

tours of sloan park

If you continue walking east past the team shop, you will round the corner of the stadium and find yourself on the east side of the park. There you will find the right field gate. This is a good entry point if you have stopped by the Sheraton or have just wandered a little more south when walking over from either parking lot I mentioned earlier or The Brass Tap.

tours of sloan park

Past the right field gate heading north is the food truck lot — accessible only from inside the park — along with the kids zone, which is located in the northeast corner of the park. Located outside the park at the northeast corner is the center field gate, which is likely the closest gate if you walked from one of the east lots or the shopping mall across Dobson Rd.

The centerfield gate is a perfect entrance if you have tickets in the outfield grass area, which are all general admission. It’s also a good access point if you have tickets for the Budweiser rooftop, which is directly to the right (west) of the centerfield gate. Just to the south of the gate, if you walk along the path and past the kids zone, there are a few vending carts before you reach the rightfield bar and patio under the large red awning. This is the main area for anyone looking to be social before or during the game. The food trucks, which vary from year to year but generally offer solid alternatives to the regular vendors in the park, can also be accessed from just behind the patio.

tours of sloan park

If you’re coming to Sloan Park from the west, on Rio Salado Parkway or taking the shuttle from Tempe Marketplace your closest entry point is going to be the home plate gate. As you may have guessed by the name, this gate is directly behind home plate and is perfect if you have seats in sections 100 to 117. Honestly, the park is so cozy that you could really enter at any gate and be a short stroll to your seats, wherever they are.

As you enter the home plate gate you will see ample vending in either direction. Section 111 will be directly in front of you with descending numbered sections to the left (north) and ascending to the right (east). Insider tip – One very cool feature of Sloan Park is that immediately behind sections 107 to 116 there is a stand-up drink rail/bar overlooking the park available on a first-come basis. This area is perfect if you have lawn seats and want a break from the sun or are just looking for a different view of the game.

tours of sloan park

There is a second, much smaller, team shop located directly behind home plate. It typically has a smaller selection than the larger shop but it is a decent alternative if you just want to try to get in and out quickly. There’s a third team shop in the outfield just west of the centerfield gate, which is perfect if you want to swing by on the way out of the park heading to the east field parking lots or Mesa Riverview shopping center.

Sections 103 to 116 will offer the most protection from the sun, as there are large shaded areas in all of these sections. Insider tip – I prefer to sit between home plate and left field anywhere down the third base line in sections 108 to 103. These have a clear view of the field and they are in the shade for most, if not all, of the game. The first few rows in these sections will be in the sun early but become shaded shortly after the games begin at 1:05 PM MST. For shade the entire game, be sure to grab seats in row eight and higher.

Practice fields and player facilities

tours of sloan park

Immediately to the west of Sloan Park are the practice fields and player performance center. If you have time before the games or on non-gamedays, this is the place to go to get close to the players and coaches. Practices take place on most days starting around 9 AM (MST) and typically will run until 12:30 PM. In the afternoons during Spring Training, the Cubs minor league players will hold exhibition games on the backfields. If you love following prospects this is the place to go.

There are six full-sized fields and one infield-only field on the grounds. As you walk from Sloan Park towards the performance center, field 1 will be directly to the north. Just beyond that, further north is field 2. If you arrive early, these are the two fields to check first and it’s typically where you see players when they first come out of the performance center.

Fields 3-6, commonly referred to as ‘the quad’, are located in a cluster on the west side of the performance center. Watching the players from these fields is ideal since all four can be seen clearly from one viewing area behind the fields’ home plates. In order to access this viewing area, it’s necessary to walk or (preferably) drive around to the entrance on the westernmost side of the fields. This requires going all the way around all the fields since the most direct route is restricted to the Cubs’ players and personnel. There is a dedicated lot located directly to the west of the fields on Cubs Way, and the walk from Sloan is approximately 3/4 of a mile.

tours of sloan park

Once you’re back at fields 3-6, you may notice another large building just east of the fields and north of the performance center. That is where the batting cages are located. Unfortunately, there is no way to access or even view the inside of the batting cages, but just knowing it’s right there is pretty cool.

Player autographs

If you are looking for places to interact with the players and get autographs, two main areas offer perfect access. Both are outside Sloan Park and players are accustomed to seeing fans and signing for them there.

tours of sloan park

The first, and the most common, area is directly outside of the home-plate gate, just a few steps to the north of the entrance. There you will see a concrete path that runs from the performance center directly to the player’s entrance. A lot of the players enter through this gate (others enter via golf cart at the back, or Northwest corner, of the stadium) and it can become quite packed before the games. Insider tip – The best time to get access to the players at this gate is from the late innings through the end of the games. Players will often leave the park early and this is a good time to try and get a quick signature.

You can also try to catch the players as they leave the performance center and head to their cars. This sounds a little more stalkerish, but it’s pretty common. If you stand alongside the gate that surrounds the player parking lot just south of the performance center, you can see players exiting the building and many times they will stop and sign. The nicer you are the nicer they are but they won’t always stop and sign no matter how cool you’re trying to be. Just be respectful and they’ll probably sign for you the next time you see them. Or, they’ll just remember you as that really cool fan.

Best places to stay and eat

I’m not going to overwhelm you with an all-encompassing list of every great restaurant in the Valley of the Sun. That would be overkill and I’m assuming you all know how to use Google, Yelp, or Trip Advisor. Instead, I’m going to tell you my hands-down favorite places to go. These are the spots that, as a local, I’ve been going to for years and have almost always had great experiences with.

If you want to stay near Sloan there are two main options. First is the  Sheraton at Wrigleyville West . This hotel is located in the parking lot of Sloan Park and is the most convenient place for easy in and out walking access. The hotel is fairly new and it’s a great option if you want to be close to the action. Chances are good that it’s booked out way in advance but it’s certainly worth checking into if you want to feel like you’re basically staying at the park.

The second closest hotel to Sloan Park is Homewood Suites by Hilton , located just west of Sloan Park on Rio Salado Parkway. Again, this place is pretty new and it’s a little less than a mile walk to the park. This is an easy stroll for some but if you don’t want to or can’t do that you can either walk a half-mile to the west to Tempe Marketplace and catch the free shuttle, or you can drive to the park. If you stay here, I’d recommend walking and not driving since you’ll be stuck in traffic longer than it will take you to walk.

If you want to be in a more resort-like setting and you don’t mind driving to the park, I’d highly recommend staying about 15-30 minutes north in Scottsdale. There are a ton of places to choose from, so I’ll just let you check  Trip Advisor .

Restaurants and bars

Probably the most important decision you’ll be making while staying in the Phoenix area is where to eat and drink. To help you choose wisely, I’ve spent a lot of time diligently researching pretty much every possible option. Keep in mind, I’m not going to recommend places that are touristy and/or obvious locations (like old town Scottsdale   or  old town Tempe/Mill Avenue ). Rather, I’m going to guide you to spots you might miss out on if you haven’t read about them here or didn’t know someone from the area.

Microbreweries

Four Peaks Brewery  on 8th Street in Tempe is my go-to spot. It’s got a huge outdoor patio, stellar bar-style food, and great beer. It’s also only 2 miles from Sloan Park.

If you don’t mind driving a little farther, head about 12 miles south of Sloan to old town Chandler . There you’ll find lots of great bars and restaurants. My top two are San Tan Brewery and Perch Brewery . Both have a great atmosphere, awesome food, and fresh-brewed beer.

Gameday bars near Sloan Park

There is a whole slew of places in and around Sloan Park to choose from on game day. My two favorite places are the Brass Tap (mentioned above/free shuttle) and Woodshed II . If you’re looking for a newer, pretty nice place with lots of craft brews on tap, Brass Tap is your spot. If you prefer the comforts of dive bars you should hit Woodshed II, which also carries a great selection of craft beers without the yuppie experience to go along with it. Both places are within a mile of Sloan.

Best burger

Of course, this one is subjective so I make no real claims as to what the best burger is. I’ve had many and I’ve loved many. If you’re in the Phoenix area you must try In-N-Out Burger . It’s a West Coast original and absolutely the one place I’d send anyone who has never been there. There’s one a mere three miles from Sloan Park. Do it.

Another great burger, and a great sports bar for that matter, is Zipps Sports Grill . They have awesome double-patty burgers, great wings, and a decent (not great) beer selection. If you’re looking for a sports bar with a great burger, this is the place. The closest one to Sloan Park is on Mill Avenue approximately four miles west of Sloan.

Best breakfast

No restaurant list would be complete without mentioning breakfast. There are a couple of places near the park that I frequent. The first is Snooze A.M. Eatery in Tempe, near the Arizona State University campus. Snooze is a solid breakfast joint but it can get very busy on the weekends, so keep that in mind.

Another favorite of mine is just down University Avenue past ASU called Harlow’s Café . Just about 5 miles from Sloan, this place has been there since 1980 and it never misses. If you have a bit of a hangover and don’t feel like dealing with the trendy Snooze, give this place a try and you won’t regret it.

Best upscale restaurants

I will only name two places here and they are my absolute favorites. The first is House of Tricks in Tempe, about four miles west of Sloan Park. The food is phenomenal, the atmosphere is amazing. Two old houses with a small outdoor bar set between them create a cozy feeling for the lush, tree-covered patio. This is a can’t-miss joint, for sure. Call in advance for lunch or dinner reservations.

Mastro’s City Hall in Scottsdale is the best steak I’ve ever had (and I’m from Omaha and have spent plenty of time in Chicago, so I’ve had a lot of steak). Mastro’s is over-the-top swanky and very expensive, two important things to keep in mind if you want to dine here. It’s located around 8 1/2 miles from Sloan and reservations are required, although you can probably grab a place at the bar without a reservation.

If you are a fan of baseball, and more specifically the Chicago Cubs, then you are going to want to take a trip out to Arizona to see a Cubs spring training game!

These games are so much fun because they are smaller, cheaper and there’s less stress. You’ll also get a sneak peek at new players and even get a chance to meet some of your favorite players!

What Is Spring Training?

Spring Training is the preseason to Major League Baseball for all 30 baseball clubs. It usually begins mid-February and goes on until the end of March or early April. Then the regular season begins.

Spring season is split into two leagues in two different locations, the Cactus League and the Grapefruit League. The Cactus League is in Arizona, while the Grapefruit League is in Florida. Some of the teams you’ll find in the Cactus League are the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners, and of course the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the Grapefruit League you will find the Boston Redsox, New York Yankees, St Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins.

Each team has its own spring training stadium throughout its specific state. In this post, we will talk about the Chicago Cubs spring training at Sloan Park in Arizona!

Sloan Park Mesa

Where do the Cubs go for Spring Training?

Sloan Park is the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs. Every year, before Opening Day, the Chicago Cubs players and coaching staff head out to Arizona to get ready for the regular season. They spend a few weeks here as they train and warm up.

Best part? Spring training is open to the public and is a great way for fans to see their team before the regular season starts!

Sloan Park Address / Location

Sloan Park is East of downtown Phoenix in Mesa, Arizona at 2330 W Rio Salado Pkwy, Mesa, AZ 85201.

Sloan Park is in a very central area, only 10 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, a little less than 20 minutes from downtown and only 5 minutes from Arizona State University!

There are a lot of restaurants and hotels making it super convenient for anyone who wants to watch the Cubs’ spring training at Sloan Park.

About Sloan Park

Sloan Park is a fairly new stadium and only opened in 2014. It has 15,000 seats, 7 practice fields and sits on about 140 acres. The complex also includes a city park, a workout facility, office space and a large parking lot used for game days.

There are four gates at Sloan Park that work as your point of entry. The gates open 90 minutes before the start of all Spring Training games. It’s always fun to get there early so you can check out the stadium and all the amenities it offers!

Sloan Park Amenities

A lot of people say they don’t like baseball because it’s “boring” and I’m guessing these people have never been to a live baseball game because there is a lot to do at baseball stadiums and Cubs spring training at Sloan Park is no different!

For example, baseball parks make your first visit special by giving out personalized First Timer’s Certificates. You can get one from Sloan Park at the Fan Services kiosk located near the First Base Gate.

Continue reading to find out all the other amenities Sloan Park has to offer!

Wrigley Field Sign Replica

chicago cubs spring training at sloan park

One of the coolest things at Sloan Park is the replica sign from Wrigley Field. It’s not as big, but I love that they included this at the Cubs spring training facility. It’s like they have a piece of ‘home” with them in Arizona.

But you want to know what makes it even cooler??? You can CUSTOMIZE IT! Yup, you can pick whatever you want the sign to say. Obviously it has to be appropriate and you are limited to the number of character, but how awesome is that?! I opted to put my Instagram handle – smalltownmayra .

The line to do this isn’t too long, but it really depends on how long people take to tell the operator what to write and then how long it takes them to take pictures. Totally worth it though, to have this special memory of seeing the Cubs spring training at Sloan Park!

Note that this is entirely different from the Sloan Park video board messages.

Sloan Park Kids Zone

If you are bringing kids, there is a possibility that they may get bored or not want to stay seated the whole time. Other than walking around, there is also a Kids Zone at Sloan Park to help keep them entertained.

Kids ages 5-13 are allowed in the Kids Zone but must be accompanied by an adult. At the Kids Zone you will find fun baseball related activities. When we were there, they had a mini baseball diamond set up for kids to play their own game!

The Kids Zone is located beyond Center field wall.

Mesa Riverview Park

Mesa Riverview Park is located right next to the Cubs spring training facility and Sloan Park. The park includes two playgrounds – one for younger children and one for older children. The playgrounds include a 50 ft tall Genesis climbing tower, a 60 ft long caterpillar mesh rope climbing structure, and play panels. On the edge of the park, surrounding the playground, is a 300 ft natural linear climbing wall with a slide entry and fort. There is also a 75 ft kids’ zip line!

Additionally, there are shaded picnic areas with tables, ramadas available for reservations, miles of accessible sidewalks, display fountains, open play areas, restrooms and a splash pad that is available during the summer months!

Riverview Lake

In the same area as the Mesa Riverview Park, you will also find the new and improved Riverview Lake. This is a five-acre lake bordered by a pedestrian boardwalk and a lake pavilion for events. There are three bridges that can be used to cross over the lake. The lake features urban fishing nodes and a show fountain.

Sloan Park Tickets and Seating Chart

cubs spring training at sloan park

Cubs Spring Training Tickets

Going to see a Cubs spring training game at Sloan Park is really affordable compared to going to see a game during the regular reason.

Of course, ticket prices will vary on where you want to sit, but you can expect ticket prices to range from $9-$40. Children 2 years or younger can get into a Cubs spring training game for free (without a ticket) but they must be seated on a parent’s lap and not take up a seat.

There is no re-entry at Sloan Park, meaning if you leave the stadium, even with a ticket, you will not be allowed back in. So don’t forget to bring anything you might need!

Sloan Park Seating

sloan park seating chart

There are about 9,200 fixed seats, 4,200 lawn seats, and 1,600 party deck/hospitality seats in six different categories. Prices will vary depending on what area you want to sit and the demand of the game, usually dependent on the opponent.

The above Sloan Park seating map shows the main seating options. I’ll go into more detail below.

However, if you have a large party or want something more comfortable, Sloan Park also offers luxury suites and 2 party decks with catering.

Reserved Seating

I feel that reserved seat tickets are what most people will get for a Cubs spring training game at Sloan Park. These tickets are for the infield, outfield, and bullpen area. These are the seats we got when we went, we sat in the infield reserved seats and had a great view!

Are you looking for shaded seats? Good idea! Although spring training starts in the Winter, you are in Arizona and the sun is hot! Sloan Park is an outdoor stadium, with no retractable roof like Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. After a little bit, you are going to want some shade!

Shaded seats would depend on the time of day but normally go for infield reserved seats, rows closer to the back. These ones are definitely under the coverings. That is where we sat and we were very comfortable.

sloan park seating chart

Lawn Seating

If you are wanting shaded seats at Sloan Park, do not sit in the lawn seating. However, if you are looking for something more relaxing, or want an area where your kids can lay down and play, then lawn seating could be perfect for you.

You are allowed to bring blankets, towels and stadium seats (the cushions) to use on the lawn. Elevated lawn chairs, such as folding chairs, or anything with legs is prohibited as it could block others view of the field.

Lawn seating is open seating on a first come first serve basis.

Sloan Park Budweiser Rooftop

The Budweiser Rooftop is an elevated patio located behind the lawn in left field. This rooftop area is exclusive and can be rented out for private events. The Sloan Park Budweiser Rooftop can fit 1,000 people and is also available for general admission.

Along with rooftop seating, fans who choose to sit in this area will also have their own dedicated concessions and restrooms. There are large umbrellas set up, and chairs can be moved, so you don’t have to worry about sitting in direct sunlight. You can still access the rest of the park even if your tickets are for the Budweiser Park.

However, this area is strictly reserved to those who buy a specific ticket to this area. I remember when we went, there was a Sloan Park employee checking for wrist bands before allowing anyone to go on top. It is also possible that there was a private event going on.

Sloan Park Food & Drinks

There’s something about a baseball game that just makes a hot dog taste that much better! Pair it with a beer and I am ready for 3 hours of baseball! There are a lot of different food options to try when you go see the Cubs spring training at Sloan Park.

Ballpark Food Stands

As any ballpark, you will find regular fan favorites, such as hot dogs, burgers and chicken tenders. There are plenty of stands throughout the stadium and they all go pretty fast. This is great so you don’t miss out on any of the action of the game!

Now if you are looking for some Chicago inspired food without having to go out to Chicago, then you are in luck because the Cubs spring training is bringing some to their Arizona home at Sloan Park.

To get a Chicago-style hot dog check out Windy City Dog Stand located at the stadium’s concourse. For a Chicago burger, check out Burger Prime, also at the stadium’s concourse. And for a Chicago-style pizza, head to A Taste of Chicago Stand located at the Centerfield concourse and Home Plate concourse.

Citrus Grove

Towards the Center Field Gate and the Kids Zone, there is an area called the Citrus Grove. This area is filled with food trucks, offering different types of food. This is a great option for anyone who is not in the mood for regular ballpark food.

Some of the food trucks that you will find there offer foods such as mexican, pretzels, and ice cream.

I’m not sure if these food trucks change each game, so it’s a good idea to make sure to always walk by and check it out!

If you enjoy alcoholic beverages while you watch a game, then not to worry because Sloan Park has you covered. There are many places throughout the stadium for you to grab a beer or a cocktail.

Along with vendors walking around, small stands in the walkways, and concessions stand, there are two main bars located on opposite ends of the stadium to get a larger variety of cocktails. One is the Hornitos bar and the other is the Jim Beam Bourbon Bar. Just a heads up, even though there is more staff working these bars, lines do tend to be a little longer here so just make sure you are patient.

Please drink responsibly and make sure you tip your bartenders!

Sloan Park Policies

Alright, you have your tickets, you’ve picked out a seat and you’re ready to see a game! Yay!

Now before you go see the Cubs spring training at Sloan Park, there are some policies that you need to be aware of. There is nothing worse than getting to your destination and having security turn you back. Let’s make sure you are prepared and can enjoy the game!

I’m going to highlight some of the more important policies but you can see the full list here .

Bag policies are always in question, regardless of what event you are going to. And Cubs spring training at Sloan Park is no exception.

Normally, clear bags, regardless of size, are always accepted in Arizona venues. However, Sloan Park is now implementing a size restriction. Backpacks and bags larger than 16 x 16 x 8 inches are NOT permitted. Hard-sided coolers, regardless of size are not allowed.

Bags, such as wallets, purses, drawstring bags, fanny packs, lunch bags, and soft-sided coolers smaller than 16 x 16 x 8 inches are permitted. Bags are subject to inspection. Exceptions include medical bags and diaper bags.

Some of my favorite stadium approved bags for sporting events include:

Small Fanny Pack

tours of sloan park

This Lululemon fanny pack is perfect for carrying just your essentials, such as your ID, cards, cash, and keys.

Small Clear Bag

tours of sloan park

Need room for more things? This clear bag will hold more than just your essentials and is approved at numerous sports stadiums.

Cross-Body Purse

tours of sloan park

For something a little chicer, this small cross-body purse is perfect to hold all your things and make a fashion statement!

Outside Food & Drinks

Don’t want to spend all your hard earned money on ballpark priced food and drinks? Luckily in Arizona you don’t have to, there are ways to save money.

Sloan Park allows you to bring your own plastic bottled water as long as it hasn’t been opened. Let me reiterate and say that you can ONLY bring in water, sodas and other beverages, even if unopened, are not permitted.

They also allow a personal amount of food in a small disposable bag. This does not mean you can bring a whole bag of Doritos! However, if you put a small amount into a Ziploc bag, that will be allowed in.

No glass bottles, cans, alcoholic beverages, thermoses or hard-sided coolers of any kind may be brought into Sloan Park.

Usually, outside of Arizona stadiums, such as Sloan Park, you will find vendors selling sealed water bottles and snacks that are the appropriate size to bring in. Bring some cash and save some money!

Prohibited Items

Before you leave your car and head to the gate, make sure you do not have any of these items on you. This list is in addition to what I’ve already mentioned above.

  • Aerosol cans (including sunscreen)
  • Animals, except service dogs
  • Baseball bats
  • Inflatables (including beach balls)
  • Noise makers
  • Non-factory sealed plastic containers
  • Selfie sticks

To see the full list, you can go here . When in doubt though, it’s better to just leave the item at home. You don’t want to risk being asked to leave or being turned away at the gate.

Most people choose to drive themselves to Sloan Park, however, you can also use rideshare options or public transportation.

If you will be driving yourself, you do not need to worry about not being able to find parking, as the parking lot for game day at Sloan Park can accommodate nearly 5,000 vehicles! There are six parking lots available throughout the 140 acres area.

You do not need to buy a parking pass beforehand, you can just purchase one on game day. They are generally $10 per vehicle and must be cashless, so make sure you have a credit or debit card ready!

There is no reserved parking but rather on a first-come, first-served basis so make sure to get there early if you want a spot closer to the stadium! If you require ADA parking, look out for the Blue Lot.

Tailgating is allowed! Parking lots open four hours prior to the start of the game.

If you choose to drink alcoholic beverages at the Cubs spring training game, ensure you have a designated driver or use an alternative form of transportation to get home. Do not drink and drive.

Hotels Near Sloan Park

Alternatively, there are many hotels close to Sloan Park that you can book a room at so you can enjoy the Cubs spring training game more comfortably.

I’ve listed the two closest hotels for your convenience! Both are within walking distance from Sloan Park.

Courtyard Mesa at Wrigleyville West

The Courtyard Mesa is a 3-star hotel and only 0.2 miles from Sloan Park and 4 miles from the Mesa. The property is dog friendly and has plenty of parking.

Other hotel amenities include an outdoor pool, hot tub, and 24-hour gym. There are also on-site restaurants.

Check for availability at Courtyard Mesa at Wrigleyville West here.

Sheraton Mesa Hotel at Wrigleyville West

The Sheraton Mesa is a 4-star hotel and is 0.1 miles from Sloan Park and 7 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, with a complimentary shuttle.

Parking is also complimentary. Some of the other amenities at Sheraton Mesa are a gym, outdoor pools, hot tub, a business center and on-site restaurants.

Check for availability at Sheraton Mesa Hotel at Wrigleyville West here.

Baseball is my favorite sport and I am so happy I got to experience a spring training game! Living in Arizona, I’m also lucky that Phoenix is not too far of a drive and that we were able to go seeing as spring training only takes place in two states.

Now I can’t wait for the regular season to begin!

Ps. After watching a Cubs spring training game, don’t forget to take a quick trip north of Phoenix and visit Montezuma Castle National Monument !

tours of sloan park

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — It’s been three years since I’ve posted one of these guides, because once 2020’s Spring Training got shut down by the pandemic, we’ve had another (2021) affected by said pandemic and still another (2022) messed up by MLB’s lockout.

2023 will be my 34th spring training and as a veteran of going to spring games, I thought I’d post some helpful hints for those of you venturing to the Valley of the Sun for the first time. This is an updated version of the guide last published here in 2020. Spring training games begin two weeks from Saturday.

Ballparks and tickets

If you don’t have tickets to games at Sloan Park yet, the good news is that tickets are still available for all 18 games . Prices are high for certain high-demand games, but you can still get lawn tickets for some other games for $15 (plus fees), which is pretty close to the season-ticket price. You can buy a lawn ticket for this game against the Reds or this game against the Guardians at Goodyear for $10.

Almost all seats in Sloan Park are in the shade, which is helpful if you don’t want too much sun. If you’re looking for sun, there are over 5,000 tickets available on the outfield berms for each game.

The Cubs’ home schedule in 2023 has games spread out throughout the five-week span and includes a game against the Canadian World Baseball Classic team on March 8.

Speaking of the WBC, preliminary round games will take place at Chase Field March 11-15. The competition is usually top-rate and it is always fun to see ballplayers you know well from their MLB teams compete for their countries. WBC tickets for the Arizona bracket are available here.

Pro tip: Though it’s a nice ballpark and convenient to Old Town Scottsdale, avoid Scottsdale Stadium (spring home of the Giants) for Cubs games, as tickets there are priced even higher than Sloan Park . Here’s a map which will give you an idea of the general location of all the spring parks in the Phoenix metro area.

tours of sloan park

Further information and specific locations of each of the 10 Arizona spring parks can be found here .

Keep in mind that for most spring games, except maybe for the last week or so, you will be seeing minor leaguers play after the early innings.

Speaking of minor leaguers, you can see Cubs prospects play games at the back fields at the Sloan Park complex (the four fields shown below at the west side of the complex). Admission is free to those games, and on days when the Cubs aren’t playing a home game, parking is also free. Also at the complex, the Cubs generally set up an area for autographs for kids only (up to age 12) next to Field 1, which is the one adjacent to the Red Lot in this map:

tours of sloan park

Players have gotten better about stopping for autographs for kids at that location. They will sometimes take time near the Home Plate Gate as they make their way from the practice fields to the main field, also generally for kids only.

Sloan Park’s food choices are generally pretty good and they also have an area where local food trucks park and sell their wares. They change up the trucks pretty much every game so there’s a wide variety of food offered. This Phoenix-area street food schedule will tell you which trucks are at Sloan Park each day. You can bring outside food into Sloan Park, but many of the other Cactus League venues don’t allow that, so check with each park before you go. One thing you can do at any venue is bring in sealed plastic bottles of water. I can’t emphasize enough how good an idea this is, especially since the price of bottled water at ballparks can generally be termed “extortionate.”

Pro tip: Freeze a bottle of water before you come to the game. By the time it gets really warm you will have a nicely chilled bottle of water, with maybe a bit of ice left, that you can then refill at the ballpark water fountain.

You’ll probably be searching for souvenirs if you’re coming to Sloan Park from out of town. The park does have a large and well-stocked gift shop, but prices there can be pretty high. Pro tip: Across Rio Salado Parkway from Sloan Park, the folks at Clark Street Sports usually set up a large outdoor kiosk where you can generally find good Cubs spring merchandise at lower prices.

Getting to the various spring training parks in the Valley is easy. Many of them are located close to freeway exits and have ample parking. Parking prices range from $10 at Sloan Park to free at Surprise (home of the Rangers and Royals). You’ll note on the map above that some parking lots at Sloan Park are $5. The $5 lots are a very long walk from the ballpark and I would recommend this pro tip: Two large shopping areas not far from Sloan Park, Tempe Marketplace and Mesa Riverview, will let you park free on Cubs home game days in their huge parking lots and take you to and from the ballpark on a free shuttle. Here’s the scoop on transportation to Sloan Park from Mesa Riverview . Tempe Marketplace ran their shuttle last year and, though I have not been able to find an online link for 2023, it should be running again.

In general, no matter what spring park you’re going to, I’d recommend arriving early . Traffic can get backed up near game time at any of these parks, and Sloan Park is one of the worst for traffic snarls close to first pitch. If you’re taking a rideshare to Sloan, the dropoff and pickup location is outside the Right Field Gate along Sheffield Avenue (see the map above, and yes, they really did name those streets Waveland and Sheffield).

Apart from Sloan Park, my favorite is the home of the Diamondbacks and Rockies. It’s right off Arizona Loop 101 at Via de Ventura and has multiple parking lot entrances. Here’s useful information about this venue , officially called Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Pro tip: If you’re going to SRF, choose the parking lot on the side of the park closest to your seat. It will make things much easier and faster to get out when you’re leaving after the game.

Other parks I particularly like are Peoria Stadium (Padres and Mariners) and Surprise Stadium. Both are easy to get in and out of and have varied food choices.

The average high temperature in the Phoenix area in March ranges from 72 degrees at the end of February to 80 by the time March ends. In a typical spring training season, many afternoons can get into the low to mid 80s, which is quite comfortable given the low humidity. Note: That low humidity means that once the sun goes down, it can be a bit chilly at night. Light jackets or sweatshirts are useful to bring along if you’re going to sample the nightlife.

Airfare, accommodations and local transportation

If you’re flying in and don’t have plane reservations by now, do it quickly, because March is (obviously) high season for trips to Phoenix and prices can be exorbitantly high. If you live in a market served by Southwest, that might be your best bet, as you can always use Southwest travel dollars for up to a year if you have to cancel your flight. (Given Southwest’s recent troubles, though, I’d advise using caution when booking with them.)

Similarly, hotels are expensive and if you don’t already have a reservation, you might be out of luck. There is now a hotel immediately adjacent to Sloan Park, the Sheraton Mesa at Wrigleyville West . Some of the dates for spring training are still available, but expensive ($350 a night and up). There’s also a Hyatt Place hotel at the Mesa Riverview shopping complex across Dobson Road from Sloan Park (east of the park). Some rooms are available there for spring training dates, a bit cheaper than the Sheraton (though still pricey).

You might be better off checking out hotels in Scottsdale, which is only a 15-minute drive from Sloan Park, elsewhere in Mesa, or in Tempe, where there are plenty of hotels near the Arizona State University campus. AirBNBs might also still be available at various Valley locations.

If you are renting a car after flying to Phoenix, I’d recommend not doing it at the airport. First, the rental car hub is a long ride from PHX, and taxes and fees on your car rental at PHX can be more than 30 (!) percent. Pro tip: Take a taxi or rideshare to your hotel and rent a car near there; there are quite a few in-town car rental agencies ( some actually attached to hotels ) where you aren’t charged the airport taxes. Unless you’re going to rely on Uber or Lyft, you will need to rent a car somewhere. Uber and Lyft both operate out of Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix and here is complete information about rideshare options at PHX . Public transit options are slim, and few if any go to the spring training parks.

Here are some things to do and places to see apart from baseball.

Restaurants and bars

There are tons of them in the Valley and you shouldn’t limit yourself to Mesa, as the area is easy to navigate. The Phoenix area is mapped out on a grid, with numbered streets (east of the center dividing line, Central Avenue) and numbered avenues (west of Central). Once you learn the main east-west through streets, almost any place is easy to find.

Mesa Riverview , mentioned above, is located across Dobson Road from Sloan Park. It has quite a few restaurants and bars.

Tempe Marketplace , also noted above and about a mile and a half west of Sloan Park on Rio Salado Parkway, has a similar selection of restaurants and bars. If you’re missing Chicago while you’re there, Portillo’s has a restaurant at Tempe Marketplace (as well as locations in Scottsdale and Glendale).

More for the Chicago visitor: Lou Malnati’s has four full-service locations in the Phoenix area and four others for carryout/delivery.

Going farther afield from Mesa, many people stay in or near Old Town Scottsdale, which is kind of kitschy (tourist-style gift shops) in its look back to Scottsdale’s history as an “Old West” town, but also has some excellent restaurants and art galleries. Every Thursday night, many Scottsdale art galleries stay open until 9 p.m. for a weekly “Art Walk” . Here’s a complete list of restaurants, bars and other attractions in and around Old Town Scottsdale.

My personal restaurant/bar recommendations around the Valley of the Sun:

Old Town Tortilla Factory , 6910 E. Main, Scottsdale: Contemporary Mexican. Has a large outdoor patio and the food is reasonably priced. They don’t take reservations for parties of less than six, so go early or be prepared to wait. Often you can get a table indoors when there’s a wait for outdoor seating.

Citizen Public House , 7111 E. Fifth Avenue: Contemporary American food and pleasant atmosphere.

Malee’s Thai Bistro , 7131 E. Main, Scottsdale: Some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had. It’s not large and also gets very busy, so reserve a table early.

The Sugar Bowl , 4005 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale: Old-fashioned ice cream parlor that’s been in this location since 1958. Bil Keane, creator of the “Family Circus” comic strip, was a longtime resident of Paradise Valley and he and his family took a liking to this place. Some signed strips are on the walls.

Scottsdale Fashion Square , 7014 E. Camelback, has several sit-down restaurants as well as a food court and movie theaters.

Paul Martin’s American Grill , 6186 N. Scottsdale Road: Surprisingly affordable, regional American specialties, excellent attentive service. (Parking here can be a hassle at times, they do have valet service.)

Four Peaks Brewery , 1340 E. 8th Street, Tempe: Brewpub with several different locally-brewed b eers and a good selection of bar-style food.

Blue Adobe Grille , 144 N. Country Club Drive, Mesa: Old-fashioned place with good beer and New Mexican-style food (which is quite different from Mexican). Be prepared to wait, it’s popular with the locals.

Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers. Exactly what it says, good beer and burgers, Fourteen locations in the Phoenix area .

Zipps Sports Grill : Neighborhood-style sports bar with plenty of screens and a wide choice of burgers, sandwiches and beer, including local craft brews. Fourteen locations throughout the Valley.

PHX Beer Co. Another place for good beer, focusing on local craft beers. Two locations , one in Phoenix, the other in Scottsdale.

Pizzeria Bianco is a popular spot with the locals with two locations in Phoenix. Another local pizza chain that gets good reviews (from me as well) is Oregano’s , which has 15 locations in the Valley.

Luci’s at the Grove , 7400 N. Via Paseo del Sur, Scottsdale: Breakfast and lunch selections and also a store with eclectic goods. Large outdoor patio, kid- and dog-friendly, a couple of other locations in the Valley, including 7100 N. 12th Street in Phoenix .

Culinary Dropout is a bar/restaurant with an eclectic atmosphere and live music. Three locations in the Valley: Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe.

Pubblico Italian Eatery . Reasonably priced Italian food, with a location in Phoenix and another in Scottsdale.

San Tan Brewing Company , 8 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler: Huge selection of craft beers and brewpub-style food in a building that used to be a bank — complete with the original vault.

If you are into a Vegas-style experience, the Talking Stick Resort , 9800 E. Talking Stick Way in Scottsdale, has a full casino and several very good restaurants.

Higher-end restaurants that are worth it if you’re willing to spend a bit more:

Fat Ox , 6316 N. Scottsdale Road. “Modern riffs on regional Italian classics” is what they advertise, and the food’s very good. They have a happy-hour menu from 4:30 to 6:30 that’s less expensive and you can make a meal out of it. This was reportedly one of Joe Maddon’s favorites when he was managing the Cubs.

El Chorro Lodge , 5550 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley. This has been a Phoenix-area institution since the 1930s. It recently underwent modernization and features spectacular views of the mountains in the area.

For much more on things to see and do in Mesa, go to visitmesa.com .

It is worth noting that Maricopa County police take DUI very seriously. You might remember what happened to former Cub Mark Grace when he was arrested for the second time for a DUI. If you’re going to go out drinking — please have a designated driver or take an Uber or Lyft.

I’m not a golfer, but if you are, there are quite a number of courses open to the public in the area. Some will be expensive. Coronado Golf at 2829 N. Miller in Scottsdale is affordable. McCormick Ranch Golf Club , 7505 E. McCormick Parkway in Scottsdale, has two 18-hole courses. It’s a bit pricey, but the views of Camelback Mountain are pretty spectacular. Troon North Golf Club , 10320 E. Dynamite Blvd. in Scottsdale, also has excellent mountain views of Pinnacle Peak. TPC Scottsdale , 17020 N. Hayden Road in Scottsdale, is the host of the Phoenix Open PGA Tour event every January (or this year, February, to coincide with the Super Bowl being held in Glendale, Arizona this weekend).

Speaking of Camelback Mountain, there are several hiking trails open to the public. Here’s what you need to know about the Camelback trails .

Camelback has a reputation as being a challenging climb. Somewhat easier hiking trails are on Piestewa Peak in Phoenix .

The Heard Museum , 2301 N. Central in Phoenix, is the pre-eminent museum of Native American art in the United States. Their website says: “Since its founding in 1929, the Heard Museum has grown in size and stature to become recognized internationally for the quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming and its unmatched festivals. Dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art, the Heard successfully presents the stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective, as well as exhibitions that showcase the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary art.”

Arizona Science Center , 600 E. Washington in Phoenix, is especially fun for kids, with interactive exhibits. There’s a planetarium, too. If you’re into dogs, there’s currently a scientific exhibition centered around our canine friends . From the website: “Have you ever wondered what your dog is thinking? Dogs! A Science Tail is a fun, interactive glimpse into the world of our canine friends. The exhibition highlights the extraordinary ways dogs see, hear and smell their surroundings, and explores why humans and dogs are best friends.” The exhibition runs through April 30.

OdySea Aquarium , 9500 E. Vía de Ventura, Scottsdale. Yes, there is a huge aquarium in the middle of the desert. Worth your time, if a little pricey. Occasionally you can find a Groupon for the aquarium, which will lower the cost from “outrageous” to “reasonable.” Very kid-friendly if you have children with you on your trip.

Musical Instrument Museum , 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix. I went to this museum in 2019 and had a fantastic time, and just made a repeat visit this week. Even with that, I’ll probably go back and see more sometime in the future. I give it my highest recommendation and TripAdvisor says it’s the top-rated attraction in the Phoenix area and among the top 20 in the United States. The MIM has an almost-daily concert series , including Chicago’s own Poi Dog Pondering on March 11.

Taliesin West , 12621 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard in Scottsdale, is the architecture “laboratory” Wright established in Arizona in the 1930s. There are public events and you can take a tour, which includes some spectacular views of the entire Valley of the Sun. Here are some special events at Taliesin that will happen during Spring Training.

Entertainment

In addition to the usual selection of bars (some listed above), there’s other entertainment in and around the Phoenix area. The first listing is baseball-related!

The Innings Festival is an annual music fest that also includes appearances from baseball people, including Ryan Dempster, who will host his “Off The Mound” talk show from the festival. Other baseball folks scheduled to attend include Randy Johnson, Jake Peavy and Dontrelle Willis. Music headliners are Green Day and Chicago favorite Eddie Vedder as well as Weezer, the Black Crowes and The Head and the Heart. It’s at Tempe Beach Park & Arts Park, 80 W. Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe, February 25 and 26, which is the opening weekend for spring training games.

ASU Gammage Theater , 1200 S. Forest Avenue in Tempe, features touring stage shows and musicals from all over the world. The link has the latest schedule. It’s worth a visit just for the architecture, as it is one of the last public buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Disney musical Frozen runs from February 22 to March 5 .

Farther afield

The Grand Canyon is definitely worth a visit if you’re coming to Arizona for the first time, or if you’ve been there many times and never seen it. It’s just as impressive as the photos make it appear. Pro tip! Even if it’s 75-80 degrees in the Phoenix area, it will be colder at the Grand Canyon , which resides at about 7,000 feet elevation. Typically in March it’s in the upper 40s or lower 50s during the day. Dress accordingly. The Grand Canyon is about a three-hour drive from the Phoenix area; you’ll be going to the South Rim, as the North Rim (which is also farther) is generally closed until mid-May.

If you’re into astronomy, the Lowell Observatory is at 1400 W. Mars Hill Road in Flagstaff, two hours north of Phoenix.

Sedona is about 90 minutes north of the Phoenix area. There are hiking trails, beautiful scenery ( here’s a photo I took near Sedona ), great restaurants and art galleries.

There are even more Phoenix-area tips and recommendations here . (It’s from 2019, but still valid.)

Enjoy your trip... and bring lots of sunscreen. (Trust me on the sunscreen.)

Where was ‘anyone but you’ filmed all the stunning locations from the rom-com.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in "Anyone But You."

Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. As you watch the movie, you might be wondering where Anyone But You was filmed and if you can visit the breathtaking beaches, cliffs, and other locations in real life.

Loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Anyone But You stars Glen Powell as Ben, a finance bro who has an incredible first date with Bea (Sydney Sweeney), a law student uncertain about her career. After spending the night, Bea panics and leaves without telling him. When she realizes she made a mistake and returns to his apartment, she overhears Ben saying that she is a “nothing” to him.

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. When their exes show up, they pretend to be a couple—and the rest is history. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits . It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue .

Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day.

Huawei’s Pura 70 Ultra Beats iPhone With Pioneering New Feature

Tiktok could be banned in 9 months here s what may stop that, sixers justified in fury toward officiating after game 2 meltdown vs knicks, where was anyone but you filmed.

Anyone But You was filmed in parts of Australia around New South Wales and Sydney. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there.

“Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. For Anyone But You , I thought, “Why do that?” We actually wrote this movie 100 percent for Sydney — very specific to the destination,” Gluck wrote.

The director continued, “We flew helicopters all over — seeing the city from that vantage point is stunning — and landed one at the Opera House, shut down the Harbour Bridge, filmed at the Queen Victoria Building, and shot for two weeks overlooking Bondi Beach,” he said. “We spent a week on a boat in Sydney Harbour shooting a scene where they’re stranded on a buoy, but you can’t have humans in the water without a shark cage, so we had to have one the whole time. You pinch yourself. It’s so unbelievable we were actually doing these things.”

Here are a few specific Anyone But You filming locations you can visit in person.

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a focal point in Anyone But You. The 20th-century architectural landmark serves as a gorgeous backdrop for big moments, including the end scene when Ben passionately kisses Bea, who is standing at the top of the steps. You can visit the performing arts center for special events and tours.

Marks Park, Bondi

Located in Sydney's northern suburbs, the wedding scene in Anyone But You was filmed at Marks Park overlooking Bondi Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The cliff-top park is open to the public and has fitness stations, a playground, and some shaded areas.

Many of Anyone But You ’s breathtaking beach scenes were filmed around Palm Beach. Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches.

“Our caravans were parked right on the water, and Glen and Sydney and I decided to live there the whole time. We’d shoot all day and all the crew would go home, then we’d jump in the water and have a swim, go to our trailers and have dinner sitting outside,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you normally wouldn’t be allowed to sleep there. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had filming.”

Jones Bay Wharf

Jones Bay Wharf in Sydney Harbour's Pyrmont.

The historic Jones Bay Wharf is another familiar filming location in Anyone But You. The hidden gem in the Pyrmont district is home to fine dining restaurants, charming cafes, and beautiful views the of the city and Harbour Bridge.

Queen Victoria Building

Queen Victoria Building in Sydney, Australia.

While on their way to collect flowers for the wedding, Ben and his friend Pete are seen walking alongside the Queen Victoria Building. The Romanesque 19th-century building is actually a five-level shopping center with fashion boutiques, jewelry stores, cafes, and restaurants.

Anyone But You is now streaming on Netflix.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. 15 injured in tram accident at Universal Studios

A group of amusement park visitors were injured Saturday evening in a Universal Studios tram accident near Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was dispatched shortly after 9 p.m. PT Saturday and transferred 15 patients to hospitals with minor injuries.

The California Highway Patrol said a tour was underway at the studio in Universal City and the tram was making a turn following the "Jurassic Park Cars" attraction.

"Due to unknown reasons, while negotiating the turn onto Avenue M, the last car of the tram collided with a metal guardrail on the right side of the roadway causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram," the agency said.

The injuries were evaluated as "minor to moderate," the highway patrol said. Neither drugs nor alcohol are being considered as factors.

A spokesperson for Universal Studios Hollywood confirmed the accident in a statement and said a tram collided with a guard rail while it was turning left.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor," the statement said. "We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority."

Universal said the Studio Tour has resumed "with a modified route" and the park is "reinforcing our operational and safety protocols."

Universal Studios is owned by NBC News’ parent company, NBCUniversal.

According to the park’s website, the tram tour is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary Friday.

The Universal Studios Tour offers park visitors a chance to ride a tram through behind-the-scenes locations of some of the studio's famed films while tour guides impart some of the history of the lot.

Many of the locations are still used for filming, so the locations may change. A consistently popular attraction includes re-creations of scenes such as a "Jaws"-style shark attack.

Take a peek at phase one of Bruce Beach Park before it opens on Saturday

tours of sloan park

After six years of planning, designing and construction, the new Bruce Beach Park will open to the public as Pensacola's newest public waterfront space.

"What's behind us is only accessible sand in essence on Pensacola Bay (in the city)," Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves told a group of local media on Tuesday during a tour of the park ahead of the grand opening Saturday.

The city will open phase one of Bruce Beach Park to the public at 9 a.m. Saturday.

"This is my first time actually getting to walk through here, and it certainly is beautiful and a really cool moment because of, again, being a part of so many years of talking about this," Reeves said.

Phase one of the park was completed earlier this year for $6.6 million and includes a central plaza with a walkway, shade structures, two public lawn areas with seat walls, a children's playground, and a pedestrian bridge over Washerwoman Creek connecting the park to Community Maritime Park.

City officials said Tuesday that workers had confirmed at least two alligators call the Washerwoman Creek and marsh area of the park home. Signs are posted along the marsh areas marking it off limits to keep the public and alligators a safe distance apart.

The central plaza and walking path include signs that tell the history of the area, from its days as a shipyard in the 19th century to the location of a public pool for African Americans used during the segregation area up until the early 1970s.

The signs, Reeves said, "commemorate what was here and what that meant to the people who lived in the city of Pensacola in a very difficult time in our city."

The outline of the original Bruce Pool, as it was known, is marked with concrete at the foot of the Washerwoman Creek bridge.

The park also highlights the area's connection to Pensacola Bay, with the children's playground framed by a map on the ground that shows the outline of Pensacola Bay and surrounding waterways.

The area's connection to the water and the legacy of pollution of that water are still an active concern. As the park began construction in 2022, water testing revealed sewer leaks in the surrounding areas that the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority has tried to address.

Reeves said testing through the Department of Health has continued and follow-up tests have shown that sources of bacteria at the site are now from avian sources and not human sources.

"This stretch of beach behind us has been found comparable to other stretches of public access areas along the bay going back to 2021, and approximately 75% of that testing is within safe guidelines," Reeves said.

Reeves said the park will not be meant for swimming, but the park will be an access point for kayakers and other paddle craft. The most recent testing at 19 different locations in and around the park on April 8 didn't indicate any significant sources of bacteria, Reeves said.

"We continued to test water, and that is important to us, and so we were certainly encouraged by not only having some testing that had good indicators in it, but we were doing more expensive specific testing with the Department of Health to ensure that everything looked good," Reeves said.

Construction continues on the $4 million section of phase two, which will include a bluff overlook with panoramic views of Pensacola Bay and the city, a "rock scramble" and terraced sitting areas around the bluff, a permanent kayak launch, a sand volleyball court and picnic areas.

Phase two is expected to be complete this year.

Reeves said city residents continue to answer in annual surveys that access to the waterfront is one of the important amenities they want from the city, and Bruce Beach Park will help add to that access.

Reeves said that, like Community Maritime Park before it, the new park will help serve as a catalyst for the city's economic growth.

"To have this open as an amenity for kids, for parents and grandparents who put a lot of value and memories into this area, to have this open for six months or seven months before phase two, I think, will be a big asset for us," Reeves said.
