I’m transiting in Abu Dhabi. Do I need a visa to leave the airport?

If you’re eligible for a visa on arrival, you can leave the airport whilst you wait for your next flight. If you’re not eligible for a visa on arrival, you can apply for UAE Transit Visa.

More about UAE visas

My passport expires in less than six months. Where can I travel to?

Some countries require at least six months validity on your passport to enter. Always visit the official government website of the country you’re travelling to check before you book your flight. If you hold a valid Emirates ID and are travelling back to the UAE, you will be allowed entry as long as you hold a valid passport.

Useful travel tips

Check the passport, visa and vaccination requirements for your destination carefully.

Consider applying for an International Driving Permit if you’re planning to drive abroad.

Keep copies of your travel itinerary in your checked bag. This will make it easier in the unlikely event that they are delayed.

Keep a photocopy of your passport and consider carrying other ID – this will help in the unfortunate event you lose your passport when you’re travelling.

Arrange travel insurance before you go and keep the policy documents with you.

Etihad, Emirates Launch Health Passport With International Air Transport Association

Both Etihad and Emirates will begin using a health passport to help passengers organize the COVID-19 testing documentation required to travel.

etihad airways travel requirements

A pair of airlines from the United Arab Emirates will launch a health passport developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in an effort to streamline travel and help passengers have required COVID-19 testing documentation all in one place.

Etihad Airways and Emirates became the first airlines in the world to partner with the IATA Travel Pass , a mobile app that will generate QR codes to share relevant information with authorities. Authorized labs and test centers will also be able to securely send medical information directly to passengers.

Etihad will launch its trial program during the first quarter of 2021 on flights from Abu Dhabi , the airline shared with Travel + Leisure this week. If deemed a success, the program will be expanded to other destinations within the airline's network.

"A high priority for Etihad is for our guests to have an easy, secure and efficient way to identify and verify their information," Mohammad Al Bulooki, the chief operating officer of the Etihad Aviation Group, told T+L in a statement. "Being one of the first airlines globally working with IATA as a pioneer partner on the IATA Travel Pass is a big step forward for Etihad's guests and for the industry."

Emirates expects to launch the app in April on flights out of Dubai to validate COVID-19 PCR tests before departure. Passengers will be able to share their test status before arriving at the airport and the app will then auto-populate their details in the check-in system, according to the carrier .

Adel Al Redha, Emirates' chief operating officer, said in a statement the app will "simplify and digitally transmit the information that is required by countries and governments into our airline systems, in a secure and efficient manner."

The IATA Travel Pass is one of several digital health passports — which could eventually evolve into vaccine passports — currently being rolled out around the world. Last week, American Airlines said it would launch its own health passport app for passengers flying with the carrier.

"Our aim is to give all governments the confidence to re-open borders to travellers based on verified vaccine and testing data," Nick Careen, IATA's senior vice president, airport, passenger, cargo and security, said in a statement .

Etihad Airways launches ‘Verified To Fly’ travel document initiative

Tuesday, May 18, 2021 Favorite

Etihad Airways

From 12 May 2021, the travellers flying from Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, will be able to validate their COVID-19 travel documents before arriving at the airport. The guests can arrive at the airport with confidence and with peace of mind, knowing they have met all essential requirements before their flight.

With the formalities out of the way, verified travellers can enjoy fast track check-in at the airport by going to the dedicated Verified to Fly desk for a quicker and smoother experience.

Mohammad Al Bulooki, Chief Operating Officer, Etihad Aviation Group said that as Etihad continuously looks for innovative solutions to simplify the travel experience, Verified to Fly removes any guess work from the equation and makes check-in faster. Guests have total peace of mind knowing that when they arrive at the airport, they have already met all COVID travel requirements.

To use the Verified to Fly service, guests can sign-up by visiting Manage my Booking and will receive further information on how to submit their documents. Once the submission has been checked by the Verified to Fly team, guests will receive a ‘success’ email if their documents meet government requirements. If requirements are missing or not met, the guest will be asked to resubmit or check their documents. The guests can also check their Verified to Fly status at any time by visiting Manage my Booking.

The verified to Fly will be available for all guests departing Abu Dhabi from 12 May 2021 (excluding China) and for flights departing Amman, Beirut, Dhaka and Manila shortly thereafter. Future developments are in progress to introduce the service on other destinations.

Etihad Airways Covid Rules

What is etihad airways doing to ensure a safe journey during the covid-19 pandemic.

Caring about your wellbeing above everything else, Etihad introduced many new measures to keep you protected when you travel , from social distancing measures and deep cleaning and sanitization of the aircraft to flexible booking policy, COVID-19 global wellness insurance cover, and 100% of its crew on board vaccinated against COVID. Etihad’s COVID-19 Travel Hub offers all the information you need to know before your journey regarding:

  • Travel requirements and digital travel support tools.
  • Etihad Wellness programme.
  • Flexible booking and COVID-19 cover.

For its efforts in ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitization, Etihad Airways was awarded, in January 2021, the Diamond status in the APEX Health Safety , powered by the SimpliFlying audit.

Travel Requirements and Digital Travel Support Tools

To make sure you stay safe when you travel, it’s really important that you inform yourself before you fly about the regulations at both your departure and arrival destination. To plan and prepare your journey, Etihad’s COVID-19 Travel Hub offers information regarding:

  • Travel requirements by destination – you can find up-to-date Entry, testing, and quarantine regulations for destinations in Etihad’s network.
  • Abu Dhabi travel information – you can find a handy guide of what you need to know before your flight. Information is personalized to your circumstances: traveling to or from Abu Dhabi or just transiting, UAE national or resident or tourist, vaccinated or not vaccinated.

Understanding that now there’s more to think about when traveling, Etihad offers you the digital travel support tools that make your journey easier by speeding up the airport verification process:

  • Verified to Fly is available for all Etihad flights, except flights to China , and allows you to validate your travel documents through ‘Manage my booking’ and relax knowing that you met all essential COVID-19 requirements even before heading for the airport. You’ll be Verified to Fly, as long as your COVID-19 documents are in order , subject to presenting a valid passport and visa at the airport. And, when you’ve been Verified to Fly, you can download your boarding pass and fast track straight to our Verified to Fly desks at the airport to drop your bags quickly.
  • IATA Travel Pass allows you to store on your phone your COVID-19 health credentials securely and speed up your check-in at the airport . The app is available on all Etihad flights between Abu Dhabi and Europe (except the United Kingdom, Russia, and Turkey) and Singapore . You can share a screenshot of your ‘OK to fly’ status as proof of your PCR test result to get Verified to Fly.

Etihad Wellness Programme

Taking extra steps to make sure you feel comfortable and protected when you travel , Etihad Airways launched Etihad Wellness, a health and hygiene programme and customer guide that highlights the stringent measures in place for healthy flying:

  • At the airport , Etihad introduced several social distancing measures , and thermal screening is in operation at Abu Dhabi airport. Some Etihad lounges reopened with enhanced safety measures such as food and drinks served according to COVID-19 regulations and lounge staff wearing personal protective equipment at all times.
  • In the boarding area, gate jet bridges and boarding stairs are sanitized before every flight, and you can scan your own boarding pass .
  • To keep all on board protected, Etihad requires you to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test before every Etihad Airways flight . Also, you must wear a mask when you travel , both at the airport and for the duration of your flight.
  • All aircraft are deep cleaned and sanitized on arrival at each destination . Also, all aircraft are equipped with HEPA air filters which capture 99% of airborne microbes and refresh cabin air every three minutes .
  • On board, all cabin crew wear personal protective equipment at all times and are vaccinated against COVID-19 . Wellness Kits are available for all guests and include a face mask, hand gel, and sanitizing wipes. Meals are served in line with strict COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Etihad’s Wellness Ambassadors are available online 24/7, at check-in, screening, and boarding when you fly from Abu Dhabi, and on board to answer your questions and share advice on staying safe during your trip. Wellness Ambassadors also help to ensure that hygiene measures are being followed.

Flexible Booking and COVID-19 Cover

To offer more freedom and booking flexibility, Etihad allows unlimited changes on all new bookings . You can change your flight for free if you need to, and you will only have to pay the difference if there is a change to the original fare you booked. You must rebook a flight before May  31, 2022 . If you cannot travel, you will be eligible for Etihad Credit.

Etihad’s COVID-19 global wellness insurance cover is included with every Etihad Airways ticket purchased for travel up to March 31, 2022 . An extension to your travel insurance, the COVID-19 global wellness insurance cover gives you extra peace of mind. Etihad will take care of your medical expenses and quarantine costs if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while on travel.

Etihad Airways launches IATA Travel Pass

IATA and Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, have announced a partnership to launch the IATA Travel Pass for Etihad Airways’ guests.

etihad airways travel requirements

The IATA Travel Pass is a mobile app to help passengers easily and securely manage their travel in line with government requirements for COVID-19 tests or vaccines.

IATA Travel Pass will initially be offered to Etihad Airways guests on selected flights from Abu Dhabi in the first quarter of 2021. If successful, the pass will be extended to other destinations on the Etihad network.

“COVID-19 tests and vaccinations will be key to get the world flying again,” said Mohammad Al Bulooki, Chief Operating Officer, Etihad Aviation Group. “Since 1 August 2020, Etihad is the only airline requiring a pre-departure negative PCR [polymerase chain reaction] test result for all passengers worldwide, and again on arrival in Abu Dhabi, giving our guests the added assurance of safety when they travel with us. A high priority for Etihad is for our guests to have an easy, secure, and efficient way to identify and verify their information. Being one of the first airlines globally working with IATA as a pioneer partner on the IATA Travel Pass is a big step forward for Etihad’s guests and for the industry.”

“The Etihad Airways partnership to launch the IATA Travel Pass is an important milestone on the road to meaningfully restarting international travel,” said Nick Careen, IATA's Senior Vice President, Airport, Passenger, Cargo and Security. “Our aim is to give all governments the confidence to re-open borders to travelers based on verified vaccine and testing data. The initial stage of the Etihad launch will focus on all four elements of the IATA Travel Pass modules, one of the first airlines in the world to do so.”   IATA Travel Pass has been developed as four independent modules that can interact with each other. These modules cover registries for regulatory entry requirements and labs/test centers, verified certificate issuance, digital identity, and the possibility for passengers to share their tests results along their journey via their mobile device.

These modules can work together as one complete end-to-end solution. Or they can be used separately to complement systems that others are building.

Guide to Etihad Airways & Etihad Guest (2024)

The most important things to know about Etihad and it’s Frequent Flyer Program, Etihad Guest

What Alliance is Etihad part of?

Where is etihad’s hub airport, etihad guest frequent flyer program, economy class cabin, business class cabin, first class apartment, the etihad residence, on-board lounge and bar  “the lobby”, etihad discount codes and deals, visa and passport requirements for etihad airways.

This guide provides an overview of flying, saving, and earning miles with Etihad Airways, including a summary of their frequent flyer program, Etihad Guest. You’ll learn all about Etihad Airways, the deals they offer, and how to get the most out of each flight.

Either read everything sequentially or use the Table of Contents (above) to jump to the section that’s most relevant to you.

About Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways has been flying since 2003 and is the second-largest airline in the UAE (after Emirates).  It operates over 1,000 flights per week to over 120 destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, with a fleet of 125+ Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

Etihad Airways’ vision is to be the best airline in the world, connecting the globe via Abu Dhabi.

Etihad has chosen not to participate in one of the three major airline alliances ( Oneworld , SkyTeam , and Star Alliance), rather they chose to create their own alliance in 2015 called Etihad Airways Partners.  Etihad Airways Partner Airlines include Alitalia, Jet Airways, Air Berlin, Niki, Air Serbia, and Air Seychelles.

Etihad’s hub airport is Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) – the 2nd largest airport in the United Arab Emirates.

Etihad flies to and from 5 major US airports – New York (JFK), Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Washington Dulles.  The three major middle east carriers all fly from JFK, Washington Dulles, and Dallas.

Etihad’s frequent flyer/loyalty program is called Etihad Guest – it is the loyalty program for Etihad Airways, Air Seychelles, and Air Serbia.   Miles earned in the program can be used to book a flight, upgrade your seat on a paid fare or you can use them to buy over 3000 luxury products in Etihad’s Reward Shop .

Etihad Seating & Cabin Classes

Etihad has several classes of services from economy and business class all the way up to their first class “Apartment” and ” The Residence”.

Etihad’s Economy class offers a “Smart Seat” with a unique headrest that provides a shoulder to lean on and adjustable back support for a more comfortable flight.   There is also in-flight entertainment and power for your electronics.

use etihad airways promo codes to fly economy

There are a lot of people that use an Etihad airways promo code or Etihad discount offer to save on economy-class airfare, but they will work on business class and some first-class airfare as well.

Recommended Reading:

  • Etihad Airways Carry-On Rules: Everything you need to know

Etihad offers a business class product that they call a “Business Studio” with seats that are arranged in a dovetail design with both forward and rear-facing seats, providing a more private experience.  The seats convert into a comfortable fully-flat bed of up to 6 feet and 8 inches. Seat and aisle dividers offer more privacy and each seat has aisle access.

use a Etihad promo code to save a little on that business class seat!

Etihad has been awarded the airline with the best first class for its “Apartment”.  More than just a first-class seat, the Etihad apartment has a large leather armchair and a separate bed of 6 feet and 10 inches. There is even space to walk around after closing the privacy doors.

There is no commercial flight experience that gets better than the Residence!   Etihad has a completely over-the-top, three-room “Residence” with a living room, bedroom, and shower room.  It is the only three-room suite on a commercial airline, designed for two people traveling together.

Eithad has taken a slightly different approach with their “Lobby” lounge on the upper deck of the A380.  Rather than have the bar as the focal point, they took inspiration from intimate lobby spaces found in boutique hotels and created a more intimate area for guests to relax and socialize.

Etihad Airways on board lounge

On-board bars are treats that the US Based airlines have decided to pass on, but the international carriers are going “all in” to differentiate and add another layer of luxury and exclusivity.  The Middle East Carriers (Qatar, Etihad, and Emirates) are three hands-down winner’s in this category, but Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, and Korean Air are taking a run at them with some pretty cool bars of their own.

Below are some promotions, discounts, and sale fares that include both business and economy class and are good from major global markets served by Etihad including the United States, India, Australia, the United Kingdom, South Asia, and many more great locations!

Etihad To Expand UAE-India Flight Network; Adds Jaipur To Its Routes

Etihad Airways will be expanding its flight network, especially the UAE-India one. They have announced flights to two destinations—Bali and Jaipur—in addition to 15 others; here are the details.

Etihad Airways Expands Its Flight Network

etihad flight network

Etihad is showing its tremendous network development since last year’s event at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) this week, with the announcement or opening of 15 new destinations. Etihad will start offering flights to Jaipur and Bali during the next two months, making it simpler for Abu Dhabi citizens to visit these fascinating places. In addition, they will fly to Al Qassim, Antalya, Malaga, Nice, and the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini, which are popular summer travel destinations.

Etihad Airways is exhibiting at the Arabian Travel Market, which opened on Monday, its ambitious objectives, successful growth narrative, and investment in the guest experience. The national airline of the United Arab Emirates anticipates thousands of visits to its booth at ATM, including dignitaries, trade clients, media representatives, and tourism partners.

Exhibit Highlighting New Home Of The Airline

etihad flight network

In collaboration with Zayed International Airport, Etihad presents an exhibit that highlights the beautiful new home of Etihad Airways. November 2023 saw the opening of the newly built airport, which offers quick check-in choices such as family-friendly sections, First and Business class, security facilities and biometric  self-check-in . Apart from Etihad’s magnificent First and  Business class  lounges for passengers flying in premium cabins and qualified Etihad Guest members, Departures offers world-class duty-free shopping and dining options.

The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner seats are on exhibit at the stand, allowing visitors to see and feel the airline’s major investment in the guest experience. In February, Etihad launched its newest fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which have a dedicated Business class with enhanced privacy and state-of-the-art equipment. DALLAS – Etihad Airways (EY) has signed reciprocal interline partnerships with five airline partners, expanding global travel options for passengers.

The Abu Dhabi-based (AUH) airline has signed partnerships with Kam Air (RQ) in Afghanistan, SKY Express (GQ) in Greece, Rex Airlines (ZL) in Australia, Jeju Air (7C) in Korea, and Myanmar Airways International (8M).

Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, said, “We continue to broaden our network reach, enabling seamless connection across our network, giving our guests a broader range of travel options. These five interline agreements make life easier for guests of all the airlines involved.”
