The gift of time

We’ve designed our East Africa fly-in trip to give you more of that most precious thing: time. Using our own fleet of small, smart planes, rather than regular scheduled flights, our SkySafari East Africa means you’ll spend almost a day less travelling. That’s a day more for relaxing on your veranda overlooking the plains, for picnicking out in the bush, for fitting an extra game drive or two.

Fly with us and there’s no needless waiting around or airport tedium. You’ll be driven straight onto runways to board our elegant aircraft, which seat only nine passengers. You’ll sink into luxe white-leather seats with a glass of chilled champagne. You’ll get a greater allowance of luggage and more space to relax. You’ll soar straight to your next wilderness destination, no stop-offs or detours eating into your adventure.

At SkySafari we’re committed to people: our guests, our staff and the communities in which we work.

Super sleeps.

The best safaris are those that put you right where the action is. Which is why we fly you between the Elewana Collection, a handful of unique camps and lodges across Kenya and Tanzania that combine sumptuous style with unrivalled locations and direct access to the wilderness.

At Elewana Tortilis Camp, your makuti-thatched tent will gaze across to Kilimanjaro and Amboseli’s profusion of game. Escarpment-top Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp has views to Mt Kenya, plus opportunities to delve into the surrounding valleys by jeep, bike, horse or camel. Elewana Sand River Masai Mara brings a dash of 1920s glamour to the savannah; better still, its award-winning tents sit by its namesake waterway, perfect for when the Great Migration passes by.

Elewana The Manor is possibly the most sumptuous stop on the safari circuit: its elegant Cape Dutch-styled cottages are perfectly placed for forays into the Ngorongoro Crater. In the Serengeti, we’ll take you to the best spot for the season: the handsome bygone-era tents of Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp, in the southern Serengeti, are wonderful when the wildebeest are calving and nearby Lake Magadi is flushed with flamingoes; the sophisticated stilted suites of Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp are the place to watch the annual passing of two million ungulates

Kenya, with its incredible wildlife conservancies and reserves, has been at the forefront of safari in Africa for decades - and it's leading the way in responsible and eco-tourism, demonstrating how travel can be an  incredibly powerful force for good.

Kenya and Tanzania are the theatre for the annual  Great Migration .

In Uganda, the mountain gorillas take centre stage. It's one of the few places left in the world where you can trek into dense rainforest, accompanied by expert local guides, in search of families of mountain gorillas in the wild.

A bond with the wildlife and each other.

Children playing football in a safari lodge

Why are families a natural fit for wildlife safaris? And why do our children have such a natural appreciation for animals? Could it be that we see something of ourselves at the sight of a mother cheetah and her cubs? Does that family of elephants, protecting their small youngsters as they march to a watering hole remind us of our own caring instincts?

Whatever it is about animal families that stirs within us something deep and comforting, these feelings are only enhanced when we share the wonders found on a Kenya safari with our own families.

No matter if family means very young children, school-aged kids, teens, or three generations traveling to Africa,  family safari holidays  are a wonderful time of discovery and appreciation not just of the wildlife but of each other.

Just call , WhatsApp , email us or fill online enquiry form   and one of our friendly travel advisors will have you on the road to adventure – your own personalized African family safari.

East Africa – Perfect For Families

When you speak with your Africa Kenya Safaris travel expert, they’ll want to know all about your family – not only the children’s ages but their interests and what sorts of wildlife and experiences you are looking for. We will customize a safari that matches your family’s needs and expectations.

For instance, at the Massai Mara Reserve not only will the big cats excite the little ones and the most jaded of teens but the park offers lots of opportunities for discovery. Go for a hot air balloon safari sailing over the park or visit a local Maasai village where children can meet the indigenous people living in a very different world than their own. They may even be asked to join in a traditional jumping dance!

What do children love more than animals? Baby animals! In the Ndutu region of Serengeti National Park , during the calving season , your family will be in heaven at the sight of thousands of newborn wildebeests, zebra, gazelle, giraffe, and even lion and cheetah cubs.

View over pool at a safari lodge for families

And not far from Nairobi , a trip to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage will delight everyone – from toddlers to grandparents – with the wonderful sight of dozens of baby elephants, drinking from giant baby bottles, playing in the mud, and even kicking soccer balls!

Your Family Will Thrive

Suddenly coming upon a herd of gazelle in a clearing, even the littlest members of your family will be astonished by nature’s gifts, starting a lifelong curiosity about wildlife and our place in the natural world.

With our experienced guides, school-age children can become “Junior Rangers”, going on nature walks and discovering animal tracks, small game, and the closeup sights and sounds of the savannah. Plus, many of our lodges offer kids’ clubs with storytelling sessions and babysitting services.

Your teens will have perhaps the most radical experience as a safari has the special power to separate them from their devices. There’s nothing quite like being mere feet from a lion to make a teen look up from their screen and discover there’s an awesome world beyond TikTok .

We can also arrange for conservation programs for your teen, opportunities to meet local people, and even participate in community wildlife projects.

Family Beaches

You know the names of the great parks like Masai Mara and Serengeti but do you know about Diani , Mombasa , and Zanzibar ? These last are the stunning beach resorts of Kenya and Tanzania .

Completing your wildlife journey, your African family safari can also include beach time at these world-class coasts. Clean, uncrowded, and pristine with excellent snorkeling and diving, your youngsters will delight in the company of turtles, dolphins, and vast schools of technicolor tropical fish.

So How Safe Is Africa for Families?

We are certain that you and your family will be comfortable and happily received in our cities, towns, villages, and of course, our exciting parks.

By booking with an expert local outfitter like Africa Kenya Safaris , you are assured that your safety is our top priority.  Besides your very knowledgeable and experienced guide, our Home Office is on call for you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. From the moment you touch down in Kenya or Tanzania to our goodbye hugs, we are available to address any concerns you might have.

East African Family Safari

By Lee Fuller | June 27, 2023

east africa family safari

It’s no surprise that safaris originated in East Africa. Sit alone, still and quiet, close your eyes, and think of Africa. You will see vast open plains teeming with game, flat-topped acacia trees silhouetted against a warm setting sun, Maasai warriors wrapped in red blankets, spears glinting in the light. This is safari, which comes from a Swahili word meaning “journey” or “to travel.”

It was about 180 years ago that the first of the great explorers led an expedition to observe and record wildlife and landscapes. With hundreds of all-male porters in tow, these tough men typically rose at sunrise every day. They would spend an energetic morning walking, take an afternoon rest, and then conclude with a formal dinner, telling stories over drinks and tobacco.

Today the East Africa safari experience is a much more family affair. Modern trips are enhanced by small planes, permanent camps and lodges, helicopters, comfortable game-viewing vehicles, and even WiFi! But none of these modern luxuries distracts from the true safari experience. You can still enjoy the dust in your hair, the wind in your face, the smell of woodsmoke, the big star-filled skies and the warm hospitality and friendliness of the local people. And of course the game, the abundant herds, the wild animals. In the wild.

Here is our tale from our two-week East African family safari.

Northern Tanzania is a spectacular wildlife destination. The Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, and the Great Rift Valley are all well known, unfenced, and very well traversed by tourists. These iconic areas are breathtaking, but can, at times, be overrun with vehicles and people. What a treat it was then to stay at a private camp, in a private concession, at the heart of this world-renowned ecosystem. Little Chem Chem was our base and from there we explored the greater Tarangire / Lake Manyara ecosystem.

east africa family safari

Located between these two national parks, Little Chem Chem manages and protects this important wildlife corridor. The dry season was the perfect time to be here, with animals from far and wide congregating along the Tarangire River. We saw elephants in abundance, including some wise old bulls with huge tusks. We enjoyed young lion cubs playing in the shade of a thicket. We watched lions hunt. We sipped gin and tonics around a fire on the edge of Lake Burunge, watching the sun dip below the Rift Valley wall. And we played with two tame banded mongoose, which are the camp pets!

After that exhilarating stay, a scenic flight took us past the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro, and up the shoreline of the second largest lake in the world, Lake Victoria, to Kenya .

east africa family safari

We began our exploration of Kenya in the country’s capital, Nairobi. After a delightful evening at Giraffe Manor, we ate breakfast with 12 Rothchild’s giraffes, plus a warthog or two. At the nearby Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Centre, our private tour allowed us to get up close (and dusty!) with the young elephant orphans. The Karen Blixen Museum took us on a nostalgic trip back to the original farmhouse, made famous by Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in the movie Out of Africa . There were also intriguing market treasures to peruse, including a plethora of local art and crafts; Kazuri Beads was a favorite stop, especially our tour of the factory, where 300 local women are employed!

east africa family safari

Then it was back to the bush. Richards Camp was a wonderful little tented camp in the heart of big game country. In partnership with the local Maasai villages, it allowed uncluttered viewing of cheetah, leopard, and lions. A quick drive into the neighboring Masai Mara Reserve offered us ringside seats on the edge of the Mara River. From July to September, this is the best place to see what has been described as the greatest wildlife show on Earth, the wildebeest migration.

east africa family safari

Experiencing this from the ground was fantastic, but floating quietly over this spectacle in a hot-air balloon really took our breath away, multiple times!

We then headed for Mount Kenya. Though not as high as Kilimanjaro, it was still snow-topped and spectacular. The nearby Laikipia is an area of ranchland where cattle, game, and the Samburu people co-exist. Sabuk was a beautifully located lodge, thoughtfully built into the surrounding rocks using natural materials. Outside showers, deep bathtubs, and old-school charm and hospitality invigorated us to explore the surrounding countryside. We found that it was best to head out on foot. We also spent hours swimming in the river, fishing, making mud fights, crafting bows and arrows, and lazily reading books. This was a delight for both children and adults.

The highlight of the trip for me was the last stop, where we explored the Lake Turkana region in Kenya’s Northern Frontier District. Lake Turkana had been on my bucket list since I was four years old and discovered a coffee table book called Cradle of Mankind , one of the many Africana books in my father’s library. The book’s back cover photograph showed a smiling young Turkana boy emerging from the lake with a small dead crocodile over his shoulders. This book taught me that this area was the home of the Turkana people and also of the largest crocodile population in Africa and of the enormous Nile perch. I learned that it was first seen by Europeans in 1888 and initially named Lake Rudolf, that it is the largest desert lake in the world (and sometimes called the Jade Sea, since the waters shimmer green in the morning sun), and that ancient hominid fossils had been discovered on the lakeshore. I knew I had to go to this place.

It was, however, notoriously difficult to get to. You could take a monthlong safari, or drive for two weeks on bumpy, bone-rattling roads; safety and security concerns added to the inaccessibility—and the mystique and appeal—of the place. Happily, nowadays helicopters and experienced pilots, comfortable lodges, and a peaceful people make the trip far more accessible. Highlights of our visit included flying over 200,000 flamingos on Lake Lagipi, watching as the Pokot tribe celebrated the spring rains, and witnessing the gravity-defying rocks in the Hoodoo Valley, the multicolored soils of the Painted Valley, and the mighty Suguta River in flood. Here was a landscape that was otherworldly indeed, a truly wild place, well off the beaten track.

These are the riches of East Africa: You can game view, sundown, play in the mud, swim, rest, learn, shop, and explore. And you will make treasured memories that will last a lifetime.

Ernest Hemingway famously said, “I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up and was not happy.” This is especially true on a family safari with GeoEx: I can guarantee that you will awake every morning happy!

Kids activities: Mahali Mzuri does not have a set program for kids but rather tailor-make activities to suit the interests of each child or “little warrior” as the lodge prefers to call them. These activities include animal tracking, outdoor games, short bush walks, bedtime stories and DVDs. The camp also tailor makes menus to suit each child's tastes.East Africa is a vacation destination that is both safe and fun for families. 9 Best African Safari Lodges for Families

Can you imagine waking up to a brilliant sunrise over the savannah before heading out on a real African safari? Africa is a beautiful and diverse continent, and choices abound when it comes to game-viewing destinations for families.

If planning a trip there, you’ll want to select a location with easy access (close to an airport) and facilities designed with children in mind. You’ll want to stay in a Malaria-free region, too, so that your family doesn’t need to take preventative medication. You’ll want to confirm any age requirements before booking your safari accommodations, as well, since many lodges set an age limit on game drives. Still, many offer kids’ programs with age-appropriate activities so your little ones can get the most out of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

1. Madikwe Safari Lodge

Located in the Malaria-free Madikwe Reserve in the North West Province of South Africa,  Madikwe Safari Lodge  gets top ratings from families for the accommodations and age-appropriate introductions to the African bush. The lodge also welcomes children as young as 2 years old.

Book one of two spacious family suites in the Lelapa Lodge that can accommodate up to two children under the ages of 10. The suites even have private pools that are covered with a safety net when you’re not using them.

Many of the lodge employees have children themselves so they know what kids like. But, the lodge will also take your kids’ food preferences into account. Just let them know what works best for your family and the staff will do their best to accommodate.

“Adult” safaris in open vehicles are available for those ages 6 and older, while “Family” safari drives—also in open vehicles—can accommodate children between the ages of 2 and 6. There are also a ton of fun activities for kids, like Bug CSI with a field ranger; painting and coloring; making pizzas in the lodge’s new pizza oven at the boma; impromptu soccer games; and viewing the night sky. Best of all, Madikwe Safari Lodge doesn’t charge for children 6 years or younger.

2. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Family safari vacations are an expensive proposition and the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is a no budget option. However, it’s a fabulous destination in Tanzania that is ideal for families with deep pockets. The lodge and its 77 guest rooms are tucked into the plains of the Central Serengeti.

East Africa is home to places your kids have read about in school—Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Victoria. The Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is located in the homelands of the Maasai people. Known originally as warriors, the indigenous population now survives as craftsman, farmers and ranchers. They wear distinctive brightly colored traditional clothing.

Most impressively, this lodge is smack dab in the middle of the path of the annual Great Migration of millions of animals, including wildebeests, antelopes and zebras; it takes place between July and September. You’ll also have no trouble viewing the Big Five here.

In addition to the Four Seasons’ top-notch service, families can take advantage of the Discovery Centre. It’s the gathering place where guests learn about the Maasai people and Africa’s history, and take part in programs that support local schools and wildlife conservation.

Finally, the Kijana Club is open to kids ages 8 to 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Here, children can work on arts and crafts projects, take part in environmental programs, learn about the animals of the Serengeti, or simple enjoy some downtime playing videogames or watching a movie. This is a nice option in case your kids get tired and don’t want to go on every single game drive during their stay.

3. Camp Jabulani

Magic happens every day at Camp Jabulani , located nearKruger National Park in South Africa’s Kapama Game Reserve. Here, your family will meet a herd of very special elephants that live on the property.

In 1997, a 4-month-old elephant was found abandoned. He was taken to the nearby Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, where he was hand-reared and named Jabulani. Later, in 2002, HESC launched a rescue mission for a dozen Zimbabwean elephants whose lives swung in the balance when they were tagged for meat after the war. When the elephants arrived in South Africa, it was clear that Jabulani would become part of their family. Camp Jabulani was created as both a home for the elephants and a place were visitors could come to spend time with them. Fifteen elephants now reside on the property.

This is a high-end Relais & Chateaux property, and staying at this all-inclusive lodge doesn’t come cheap. But the elephant-back safaris and time spent interacting with the herd is priceless. Kids must be 12 years or older to stay at the main lodge.

A few days at Camp Jabulani’s Zindoga Presidential Villa is a must for families who can afford it. This is a camp-within-a-camp, and includes two spacious suites connected by a living and dining area. There’s also a private heated plunge pool and roomy wooden deck for game viewing. You’ll have your own safari team, including a ranger (and private 4×4 vehicle), and a chef and butler. Children of any age are welcome at Zindoga.

Young guests are also invited to take part in the camp’s excellent children’s program, Team Tusker. Activities include storytelling, dress-up parties, arts and crafts projects, tracking tutorials, bird watching and bug catching, as well as survival basics.

4. Giraffe Manor

While not exactly a game lodge, Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya, is an incredibly child-friendly small hotel that is home to a herd of very playful Rothschild giraffe. You can even hand feed them at the kitchen table or at the front door of the hotel, which was originally built to resemble a Scottish hunting camp.

There are 10 bedrooms here, along with two suites with direct access to the courtyard, ideal for families. Rates are all-inclusive and even include transportation to and from the airport, along with admission to the AFEW (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife) Giraffe Centre on property. Children of all ages are welcome.

The hotel is just outside Nairobi and is surrounded by forest with views of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the south. The resort’s giraffe population shares its home with many different types of birds, warthogs and even the rare bushbuck.

5. King’s Camp

King’s Camp is one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to affordable luxury while on safari in South Africa. Located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, this is one of the only places in the world where you can see rare white lions in the wild. The “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, Cape buffalo and black rhinoceros) and many other species are spotted here, pretty much on a daily basis.

This camp, which accepts children 6 years and older, harkens back to Colonial days and strikes the right balance of elegance and comfort. You can book one of 11 standalone thatched-roof bungalows, or Waterbuck Private Camp, a four-bedroom villa that comes with its own safari vehicle, ranger, butler and chef. The camp is roomy enough for a family of eight and is situated on a dry riverbank that offers fantastic game viewing. In-room decor includes beautiful and functional mosquito nets, claw-footed tubs, indoor and outdoor showers and a private patio decked out with a hammock. The rangers, trackers, camp managers, chef and staff create a family-like environment, and guests feel welcome the moment they arrive.

An on-property watering hole draws the attention of animals all day long, and guests either relax by the camp’s pool or in the shade of the thatched viewing deck to watch the elephants and impala stop for a drink or dip.

6. Luangwa Safari House

Here’s an option for reticent safari-goers: a private house in  Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park that offers the comforts of home. Luangwa Safari House , one of the accommodations offered by Robin Pope Safaris, can comfortably house up to eight people in four bedrooms and a spacious dining/living area. A chef, house manager and private guide (and vehicle) are all at your disposal. Meals and activities are carefully matched to your family’s interests, too.

There’s also a solid children’s program that extends from game drives to guided nature walks to trips to the Kawaza Village School and Chimpembele Wildlife Education Center. Back at the camp, kids can help collect eggs from the hen house and bake cookies in the kitchen with the chef. Children age 7 and up are welcome at Luangwa Safari House.

7. Richard’s Camp

In southwestern Kenya, look no further than family-owned and operated Richard’s Camp, where you’ll find traditional tented accommodations near the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Forest Camp sits on the edge of a riverine forest with grass plains stretching away from it. This means game drives easily sight elephants, big cats and herbivores like zebra and impala that graze the plains each day.

Six tented suites are available with either twin or double beds, and extra beds can be brought in for families sharing accommodations. The tents operate via solar power and offer 24-hour light, heated showers and flushing toilets. Meals are enjoyed outdoors or in the camp’s sitting area in front of a roaring fire. There is also a private camp on the property that can accommodate up to 10 individuals; this is ideal for families who want complete privacy. There are also additional lodgings at River Camp located about a half-hour away.

Game drives and escorted bush walks are the core of the experience here, but you can also go on a day trip to nearby Lake Victoria, visit a Maasai village, go on a hot air balloon safari, or flight-see over the gorgeous Masai Mara. The camp’s owners are raising their own child right on the property and can expertly answer questions about age-appropriate safari activities.

8. &Beyond’s WILDchild Program & Family Suites

&Beyond is an African safari specialist offering accommodations throughout southern and East Africa. The company recently devised its WILDchild program that’s available at all lodges. Rangers trained in working with children keep kids engaged throughout their vacation with special programs about wildlife, conservation, and African culture.

The company also installed new family suites at select lodges in South Africa and Tanzania. &Beyond recommends many lodges for families, including Kirkman’s Kamp, Phinda Zuka Lodge, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, and others.

&Beyond Kirkman’s Kamp is a favorite with families due to its location in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve next to Kruger National Park. It’s an easy 90-minute charter flight from Johannesburg and yet the animal viewing is exquisite. That’s because there are no boundary fences between the Reserve and National Park. Animals—and game drive participants—roam across that invisible line. It’s not unusual to see leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino here. This area also allows off-road driving so your guide will get you as close to the wildlife as possible.

Photo Courtesy of Shamwari Riverdene Lodge

9. Shamwari Riverdene Lodge

The Riverdene Lodge in the Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape is an ideal spot for your family’s first safari adventure. Located in Port Elizabeth, in a Malaria-free area, the lodges here—Riverdene in particular—happily welcome families with children as young as 4 (although kids must be older in order to go on a game drive).

There is so much to do here beyond normal game drives, including visits to the Born Free Foundation Big Cat Rescue Center that houses lions and leopard that have been saved from circuses and zoos, and the Shamwari Wildlife Hospital that nurses wounded wild animals back to health before releasing them back into the wild.

Riverdene Lodge features nine interconnecting, air-conditioned rooms, satellite television, a lounge area, private balconies leading to the garden and BBQ area, and a swimming pool. An onsite children’s coordinator is on hand to suggest activities custom-tailored for your family’s unique interests.

East Africa Family Safari – Family friendly Accommodation – Kids Activities – Kids experienced safari Guide – Kids Tailor made Itineraries – Fun for the entire Family.

East Africa Safari vacations aren’t just for solo adventurers or couples – with East Africa family safari becoming an increasingly popular way to spend an unforgettable vacation with the people you love.

East Africa is uniquely equipped for family safaris – boasting Africa’s largest variety of wildlife parks, accommodations, and family friendly activities. Don’t discount the presence of beach destinations like Zanzibar and the Kenyan Coast, either!

Whether you’re following in the footsteps of the Wildebeest Migration, engaging in a journey of cultural discovery with the Masai or Datoga, learning local crafts, enjoying a dip in your lodge’s pool, or getting a closer encounter with iconic animals at a wildlife refuge – Tanzania has something for all ages.

What Makes a Good East Africa Family Safari ?

At Realm Africa Africa, we’re well aware that travelling with children can be trying even at home – let alone worlds away in an unfamiliar culture. With several of our team being parents themselves, we’ve come up with the perfect formula for a child-friendly safari that doesn’t sacrifice quality.

How do we help you have the perfect East Africa family safari?

  • We select East Africa family Safari friendly lodges. Many lodges have additional facilities to accommodate children, ranging from swimming pools all the way up to play areas and day care.
  • We minimize drive time between destinations, using interesting stops such as Masai villages or local market towns to break up longer drives.
  • Keeping game drives to a manageable length. With bathroom facilities limited in the wilderness of the Serengeti or Masai Mara, we’re aware that kids might need  a break.
  • We can recommend additional activities that are going to delight and educate. Visits to local tribal settlements, lodges with family-friendly activities, and local attractions offering a hands on experience are all options.

East Africa Family Friendly Activities – Fun for the whole Family.

Whether your trip is taking you on safari in Tanzania or gorilla trekking in Rwanda, all of Shadows of Africa’s destinations offer something for younger adventurers who may not be able to participate fully in game-viewing activities.

Kenya is particularly well equipped to handle families, with Nairobi boasting a huge variety of kid-friendly activities such as the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Giraffe Centre, and Bomas of Kenya.

In Tanzania, properties like Africa Amini Masai Lodge offer an engaging experience as children can learn how to make Masai jewellery, hunt like a Masai, and how to identify potentially useful plants in the African wilderness.

Across Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania – there are also a variety of properties with private game collections, as well as zoos and wildlife refuges in larger cities.

And, of course, the beaches of Zanzibar and the Kenyan coast offer a wealth of opportunities to make unforgettable memories with your kids too!

Volunteering Together whilst on an East Africa Family Safari

If you’re wanting to give a little back or encourage community mindedness in your children, volunteering in East Africa is an excellent way to do it.

Spending an afternoon at an orphanage in Entebbe, adopting an elephant in Nairobi, or making a donation at the Women’s Sewing Group in Uganda are all excellent ways to encourage a spirit of kindness while also seeing a different side of the region.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

From island life to big game safaris, East Africa kindles images of a unique family adventure. Over 12 days, you will lounge on beaches, come face to face with elephant herds, learn how to track animals, and meet with tribal Masai families. From recreating   Lion King movie scenes to watching wildebeest gallop past you, this family safari is imbued with the intimate experiences that are possible in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Kenya.

Customizable Itinerary

Dongwe – spacious white sand and tropical waters.

Zanzibar is serene. Palms send their iconic shadows across the sand each morning, the indigenous forest provides a green backdrop to a white beach, and at low tide, you can wade through almost a mile of knee-deep tropical water. Even at high tide, these waters are sheltered and safe for swimming. You will experience space here, and Zanzibar is a relatively undeveloped island, especially compared to others in the Indian Ocean. Dongwe is on the island’s undeveloped Eastern Coast, which is where small resorts are spread along a beach that can never seem to end. After being met at Zanzibar’s international airport, you will be transferred to the resort for the first of four nights.

What's Included:

Dongwe – Time to Rest and Relax

You can open the curtains to soft Indian Ocean colors while watching your kids splash in the pool. You can also indulge in a very leisurely breakfast before starting your day. In Dongwe, you will be staying in a two-bedroom villa that is perched on the beach with a wraparound balcony that overlooks the pool and ocean. Nothing needs to be planned before your arrival, so you can take time to rest and relax. Then, you can add in activities as you wish such as sailing on a traditional wooden dhow. The resort operates a small kids’ club, which means you will have an hour or two free of your kids to enjoy the spa or simply to relax and read a book. You should note that the sun is strong here, so sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 is recommended for all.

Dongwe – Water Sports and Wandering with Colobus Monkeys

Over these two days, the tranquil mood of your vacation will continue. Zanzibar creates a quintessential island beach break, and you will soon slow down to East Africa’s laid-back rhythm. Traditional dhows provide a beautiful means of exploring the coastline and can be booked at the resort. Kayaking is another option, and Northern Zanzibar offers some stunning snorkeling, which can be arranged as a half-day excursion. Included in your stay will be a half-day trip to Jozani Forest, which is home to the endangered red colobus monkey. Wandering through the forest and searching for their enigmatic faces will be an excellent introduction to the upcoming wildlife encounters that you will experience on the mainland.

Tarangire National Park – Face to Face With Baboons and Hippos

After a direct flight to Arusha, you will be greeted by a safari guide and set off into the wilderness. These next four days will be a real adventure, and it is excellent to begin your safari feeling fully rested. As mountains give way to the forest, you will enter Lake Manyara National Park, and rowdy storks may shout from treetops as you twist into a mysterious land. In the forest, you cannot see far, but you can turn a corner and be just a few meters from a giraffe or elephant. You can drive around another corner, and a lion may lounge peacefully on a tree, which is a scene that is typically only witnessed in a small handful of African safari destinations.

Within the forest, you cannot escape baboons. They will yelp boisterously, bang on trees, and generally create a racket in displays of dominance. There are more baboons here than anywhere else in the world, and the troops are enormous and conduct running battles for territory. Hippos are another enchanting highlight, especially towards the end of today, but you will be safe and in a vehicle for these encounters. They will begin emerging from the lake, joining grazing buffalo and wildebeest, and by the time you have existed Lake Manyara and entered Tarangire, you should have encountered many of the animals from your children’s checklist.

Tarangire National Park – Up Close With Huge Elephant Herds

Today will bring the elephants. Marching across the savannah, they will come, sometimes in herds of more than 50 and moving in unison. Infants tend to nestle between the footsteps of their mother and aunts. Teenage males may lock trunks and tusks in playful shows of aggression while a baby runs about jubilantly, frightening a gazelle herd from their grazing place. Tarangire provides some of Africa’s ultimate elephant encounters, and you will experience their different behaviors throughout the day. Beyond these pachyderms, Tarangire safaris are always about surprises. An incredible variety of animals live in this park, but many are reclusive. So, you will learn how to look for clues and absorb the unpredictability of an authentic African safari.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area – Meeting with a Masai Community

After two early morning starts, you can take it slow today with a relaxed breakfast on the verandah as elephant and giraffe wander by you. You do not need to worry because it is very safe to be in such close proximity to these animals. Local families have always lived with giant animals as neighbors, and camps and guides use the same tactics that have been employed by indigenous tribes for many generations. One of these tribes is the Masai, and you will spend this afternoon with their local community. After a traditional welcome of jumping and singing, you can spend time with a family, learning about life on the East African plains. This can be a very eye-opening experience for children because it has the ability to transcend language barriers. You lodge for tonight will be inside Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which will allow for an early start tomorrow.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area – Evocative Safari on the Crater Floor

Ngorongoro Crater is the most magical place in Africa between dawn and nine in the morning. During these hours, the wildlife is very active. You will descend onto the floor of a volcanic caldera and have three hours of the most astonishing wildlife scenes. Black rhinos may bashfully march around, lions can be seen eating a carcass or prowling for a meal, and wildebeest will be galloping in displays of virility. You will even encounter some of the world’s largest elephant bulls.

By nine in the morning, the wildlife action typically calms down. Many animals escape to the crater’s fringes, where there is forest and shade. The grazers remain, but their pace will have slowed. It is at around nine in the morning when the crater floor becomes crowded with safari vehicles. It gets noisy and somewhat uncomfortable, especially when many vehicles crowd around a single lion pride. The reason for this vehicle concentration is the location. Cheaper safaris use accommodation that is outside Ngorongoro Conservation Area, so they must pass through two park gates that have long morning waits before reaching the only road onto the crater floor. You will be staying close to the rim, which means that you can enter the crater at first light and enjoy three magnificent hours of Ngorongoro Crater at its best. Afterward, the afternoon will be at your leisure.

Mara Naboisho Conservancy – Stunning Safari Flights and Into the Mara

Flying across East Africa is always a magical experience because you be in a small aircraft with amazing, wild vistas beneath the wings. Due to border formalities, you will need to take two planes to reach the Masai Mara, but the process is very smooth because your second plane waits for the first. You will land in the Mara and will transfer directly to a family camp in Mara Naboisho, which will be a private conservancy that borders the Masai Mara National Reserve. You can gaze out from the camp, and the grasslands will extend to be seemingly endless.

This is the landscape that inspired the Pride Lands in the Lion King , which is where lions perched on rocks and surveyed the endless plains. It is also where dozens of species march by, seemingly in harmony. Mara Naboisho is private, and there is no specific time for avoiding vehicles and other visitors. Instead, entry is restricted to those who are staying at a Naboisho camp, and there is a strict two vehicles per sighting rule. A private conservancy like this will give your family more of an authentic safari experience, especially during the peak season months of July and August. It can really feel that it is just the guides, the animals, and your family.

Day  10 - 11

Mara Naboisho Conservancy – Specialist Family Safari in the Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is famous for the wildebeest migration, which is when up to 2 million mammals arrive on the grasslands to graze after the rains. This seasonal bounty supports a year-round abundance of big cats, but none of the big cats are part of the migration. They must defend and extend their home territory and then fatten up when the wildebeest wander past them. These cats do not have the stamina to march long distances anyway, and no dominant lion will allow another male to hunt in his territory. Some spotted hyenas may follow the migration as these animals have an unwritten code of conduct and will allow rivals to pass through their lands but not stop.

If you are in Mara Naboisho from July to September, you will witness large, grazing herds of wildebeest and zebra. During all the other months, you can encounter the same magnitude of big cats. Often, these big cat encounters are more dramatic outside the wildebeest migration because tension rises when there is less food. Over these two days, you will track leopards and cheetahs through the conservancy. Lions, you will already know well from Tanzania, and these dominant cats will continue to be a highlight here. Off-trail driving is permitted, so you can really get close to the cats, including those that use Naboisho as a nursery for their cubs.

While big cats are a natural highlight of the game drives, the Masai Mara is also home to an excellent variety of life, very much like the Pride Lands. In one vista, you can see giraffe, elephants, zebra, Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, hippo, buffalo, and various others. When not on a family game drive, your children will be entertained at the camp’s specialized kids’ club. Local guides lead tailored activities that are focused on wildlife conservation, bush survival, and animal tracking. All these are essential to life as a safari ranger, and your kids can learn about the day-to-day life of working on the conservation. The kids’ club operates in conjunction with your family game drives, and each day’s itinerary can be adjusted to your timings and mood.

Nairobi – Departure

After a leisurely morning, you will be transferred to the airstrip and fly to Nairobi Wilson Airport. From here, you will be transferred to the international airport for your outbound flight.

Cultural Immersion and Adventure: Afropop Worldwide’s Unique Tours in Tanzania and Zanzibar

AfroPop

Afropop Worldwide’s Tours Offer More Than Just Safaris

U.S. travelers accounted for 63% of all safari visitors to Africa in 2022, with most heading directly to popular safari destinations. Upon arrival, the majority of American and European tourists disembark at airports like Kilimanjaro International, treating them as mere gateways to the wild, while bypassing vibrant cities like Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s cultural and commercial hub. This is a missed opportunity for those who could greatly enrich their experience by spending just a few days exploring the local urban culture and connecting with the people of East Africa.

In contrast, since 1997, the award-winning U.S.-based radio series Afropop Worldwide, hosted by Georges Collinet from Cameroon and nationally distributed since 1988, has been offering culturally immersive tours to Africa, including destinations like Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, Cape Verde, and Madagascar. These tours not only highlight the region’s vibrant music scene but also incorporate elements of eco and adventure tourism.

Sean Barlow, Executive Producer of Afropop Worldwide and creator of Afropop Tours, stated, “The core value of Afropop Tours lies in our deep connections with local artists and cultural industry professionals. These relationships allow us to offer our travelers unique, insider experiences that are simply not available to most. The loyalty of our repeat customers speaks to the success of this approach.”

Currently, Afropop Worldwide is focusing on Tanzania and Zanzibar. Their most recent tour in February 2024 brought 24 eager travelers on a journey that combined an in-depth exploration of Dar es Salaam’s vibrant music scene, attendance at the world-class three-day Sauti za Busara festival in Stone Town, Zanzibar, relaxing beach time in northern Zanzibar, and an optional safari to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara parks.

Immersive Encounters in Dar es Salaam

In Dar es Salaam, Afropop travelers were treated to an array of outstanding performances, including Swahili rumba—featuring classic 12-piece dance bands known as musiki wa dansi—modern taarab orchestras with deep Arabic influences, lively gospel music and dance at a Sunday morning church service, and the electrifying singeli, a genre of electronic youth music sweeping the nation. To deepen the cultural experience, artists and cultural creatives were invited to join the group for dinners, allowing travelers to engage in direct conversations with some of Dar’s most influential figures. Many participants appreciated the fact that they encountered so few foreign tourists, making their experience feel authentically local.

The musical guide in Dar was the accomplished guitarist, composer, broadcaster, and music historian John Kitime, who seemed to have connections with everyone in the city’s vibrant music scene. The tour was expertly managed by their local partner, Takims Holidays.

The Sauti za Busara annual music festival, held each February, offers an expertly curated lineup across two stages in the historic Old Fort at the heart of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Afropop Worldwide has been covering this vibrant festival since its inaugural edition in 2004. In 2024, the festival showcased a diverse array of talent, featuring several Tanzanian artists alongside performers from Congo, Zimbabwe, Kenya, the Indian Ocean, South Africa, and Nigeria. The headline act was Made Kuti, grandson of the legendary Fela Kuti. True to its commitment to authenticity, the festival maintains a strict 100% live performance policy, with no playback allowed. Additionally, Sauti za Busara is known for its strong representation of women-led bands. The festival drew a mixed audience, with approximately half being locals and the other half international visitors.

Afropop travelers were treated to an exclusive private performance in Stone Town by the local Culture Music Club at their clubhouse. The ensemble played traditional taarab music, featuring instruments like the Arabic oud and qanoun, along with violins, accordion, and stand-up bass. The second part of the concert showcased kidumbak, a lively, dance-oriented street version of taarab.

east africa family safari

Following an intense, non-stop week in Dar es Salaam and before diving into the Sauti za Busara festival, which runs from 4 PM to 1 AM, Afropop travelers enjoyed some much-needed relaxation at Kendwa Rocks Beach Resort in northern Zanzibar. This resort was specifically chosen for its unique beach, where unlike many other shallow beaches in Zanzibar that are only swimmable at high tide, you can swim at any time. Excursions from this resort included a must-visit to a spice farm, where travelers participated in preparing lunch, and a breathtaking sunset sail on a traditional dhow.

east africa family safari

After the Sauti za Busara festival, most Afropop travelers chose to fly to Arusha to embark on a five-day safari through Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara parks. During the safari, they had close encounters with iconic wildlife, including giraffes, elephants, antelopes, zebras, wildebeests, pink flamingos, and the unforgettable sight of lions mating.

Sean Barlow remarked, “While our primary focus for Afropop Tours is always on music, culture, and connecting with local people, we believe that offering the unique, magical experience of an African safari is a must for travelers coming all the way from North America. It’s something people absolutely love.”

The African safari industry deserves credit for employing thousands of people, bringing in much-needed foreign exchange to countries like Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, and others, and for promoting Africa as a highly attractive destination, even if the focus tends to be more on wildlife than on people and culture.

Join the 2025 Encore Tour of Tanzania and Zanzibar: Limited Spots Available

Afropop Worldwide is set to offer an encore tour of Tanzania and Zanzibar from February 4-18, 2025, following the same successful itinerary as the 2024 program, including an optional safari. With only a few spots remaining, those interested are encouraged to act quickly. An informational Zoom session will be held on Thursday, September 5, at 8:30 pm EDT (UTC -4) to answer any questions. For more details or to join the Zoom session, please contact [email protected] .

To give you a taste of the experiences from Afropop travelers in Tanzania in 2024:

Here’s what some of the 2024 participants had to say:

  • Sam Sirkin from Oregon: “The Afropop team took us on a mind-blowing unparalleled journey into music, culture, history, and adventure!”
  • Marjorie from New York City: “I especially appreciated the part of the trip that included Dar. That’s where we got to commune with the locals and enjoy the local flavor—the music, the food, and seeing different parts of the city where we saw how people lived and how they go about their everyday life.”
  • Susan from New York: “I went as an African music neophyte. The week we spent in Dar es Salaam was fantastic. We experienced some five major types of music in various venues. We were usually the only foreigners anyplace. Our local music guide was a lovely man who was so open to talking with you about anything and you could talk to him individually.”
  • Jenny from Chicago: “This was my first trip to Africa. I went alone because my husband could not make it. Tanzania is a very friendly country and for me, one of the highlights was dancing along with the local bands. It truly exceeded all my expectations. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was really a beautiful trip.”

France Confronts Horror of Rape and Drugging Case as 51 Men Go on Trial

A man is accused of drugging his wife and then inviting dozens of men to rape her over almost a decade. The questions raised by the case have unsettled the country.

east africa family safari

By Catherine Porter and Ségolène Le Stradic

Reporting from Paris

For years, she had been losing hair and weight. She had started forgetting whole days, and sometimes appeared to be in dreamlike trances. Her children and friends worried she had Alzheimer’s.

But in late 2020, after she was summoned to a police station in southern France, she learned a far more shattering story.

Her husband of 50 years, Dominique Pelicot, had been crushing sleeping pills into her food and drink to put her into a deep sleep, the police said, and then raping her. He had ushered dozens of men into her home to film them raping her, too, they said, in abuse that lasted nearly a decade.

Using the man’s photographs, videos and online messages, the police spent the next two years identifying and charging those other suspects.

On Monday, 51 men, including Mr. Pelicot, went on trial in Avignon, in a case that has shocked France and cast a spotlight on the use of drugs to commit sexual abuse and the broader culture in which such crimes could occur.

The accused men represent a kaleidoscope of working-class and middle-class French society: truck drivers, soldiers, carpenters and trade workers, a prison guard, a nurse, an I.T. expert working for a bank, a local journalist. They range in age from 26 to 74. Many have children and are in relationships.

Most are charged with raping the woman once. A handful are accused of returning as many as six times to rape her.

The victim, Gisèle, who has divorced her husband and changed her surname since his arrest, is now in her 70s.

Since his arrest, Mr. Pelicot, 71, has “always declared himself guilty,” said Béatrice Zavarro, his lawyer. “He is not at all contesting his role.”

Other defendants have denied the rape charges, with some arguing that they had the husband’s permission and thought that was sufficient, while others claimed they believed the victim had agreed to be drugged.

When the police showed Gisèle some of the photographs they say her husband had carefully classified and stored, she expressed deep shock. She and her husband had been together since they were 18. She had described him to the police as caring and considerate.

She had no memory of being raped, by him or the other men, only one of whom she recognized, she told the police, as a neighbor in town.

The first time she will consciously witness the rapes, her lawyer Antoine Camus says, will be in the courtroom when the video recordings are played as evidence.

The trial comes at a moment of heightened scrutiny of the handling of sexual crimes in the country. Rape is defined in French law as an “act of sexual penetration” committed “by violence, coercion, threat or surprise.” A number of feminist lawmakers want to amend that wording to say explicitly that sex without consent is rape, that consent can be withdrawn at any time, and that consent cannot exist if sexual assault is committed “by abusing a state impairing the judgment of another.”

“There is a kind of naïveté on the topic of predators in France, a kind of denial,” said Sandrine Josso, a lawmaker who led a parliamentary commission into what is known in France as “chemical submission” — drugging someone with malicious intent. She started the commission after she says she became the victim of a drugging last year. A senator is being investigated on accusations that he slipped Ecstasy into her Champagne .

Ms. Josso hopes that the Avignon trial will draw attention to the use of drugs to prey on women, and also shed light on the wide profile of predators. “They could be your neighbors, without falling into paranoia,” she said.

Mr. Pelicot seemed like a classic man next door. He was a trained electrician, an entrepreneur and an avid cyclist. His middle child and only daughter, Caroline Darian, her pen name, described him as a warm and present father in a book published in 2022 about the case, “And I Stopped Calling You Papa.” She tried to turn her family trauma into action, forming a nonprofit association, “Don’t Put Me to Sleep,” to publicize the dangers of drug-facilitated crimes.

Her father, she wrote, was the one who drove her to school, picked her up late from parties, encouraged her and consoled her. Her mother was the stable breadwinner, working as a manager in a Paris-area company for 20 years.

When Gisèle retired, they moved to a house with a big garden and pool in Mazan, a small town northeast of Avignon. The couple regularly hosted their three children and grandchildren for summer vacations peppered with late dinners on the terrace, where the family debated, held dance competitions and played Trivial Pursuit.

“I think of us as happy,” his daughter wrote. “I thought my parents were.”

None of them harbored any suspicions. Then, in 2020, three women reported Mr. Pelicot to the police for trying to use his camera to film up their skirts in a grocery store, and he was arrested.

The police seized his two cellphones, two cameras and his electronic devices, including his laptop, before releasing him on bail.

On the devices, the police say they found 300 photographs and a video of an unconscious woman being sexually assaulted by many people. They said they also found Skype messages in which the man boasted of drugging his wife and invited men to join him in having sex with her while she was unconscious.

Over the course of their investigation, the police found more than 20,000 videos and photographs, many of them dated and labeled, in an electronic folder titled “abuse.” The timeline they built began in 2011. The list of suspects grew to 83.

Two months after his initial arrest, Mr. Pelicot was arrested again and charged with aggravated rape, drugging and a list of sexual abuse charges. He is also accused of violating the privacy of his wife, daughter and two daughters-in-law on suspicion of illegally recording, and at times distributing, intimate photos of them.

If he is found guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

During interviews with the police, the details of which were included in an overview of the case by the investigative judge, Mr. Pelicot said he began drugging his wife so he could do things to her, and dress her in things, that she normally refused. Then he started inviting others to participate. He said he never asked for or accepted money.

He met most of the men, the investigating judge’s report stated, in a chat room on a notorious, unmoderated French website implicated in more than 23,000 police cases in France alone from 2021 to 2024. It was finally shut down, and its owner arrested, in June after an 18-month investigation stretching across Europe.

The chat room where most of the men met Mr. Pelicot was called “a son insu,” which means “without their knowledge.”

Over the years, Mr. Pelicot told the police, he developed rules for the visitors to ensure that his wife did not wake: no smoking or cologne; undress in the kitchen; warm hands under hot water or on a radiator, so their cold touch would not jolt her. At the end of each night, according to the investigating judge’s report, he cleaned his wife’s body.

Of the 83 suspects, the police identified and charged 50.

Only one of the men is not charged with rape, assault or attempted rape of Mr. Pelicot’s wife. Instead, that man is accused of following the same model, and drugging his own wife to rape her. Mr. Pelicot is also charged with raping the man’s wife while she was drugged.

Five of the men also face charges for possessing child sexual abuse imagery.

Mr. Pelicot is also being investigated in the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in 1991 and the attempted rape of a 19-year-old in 1999. He admitted to the attempted rape, according to Florence Rault, the lawyer representing the victims in both cases, but denies any involvement in the 1991 homicide.

The story has prompted some soul-searching among doctors, since Gisèle had visited gynecologists and neurologists over a series of mystifying symptoms, but had received no diagnosis, according to her daughter.

“What I found disturbing for us doctors was that no doctor considered this hypothesis,” said Dr. Ghada Hatem-Gantzer, a well known obstetrician-gynecologist and expert in violence against women. She and a pharmacist, Leila Chaouachi, have now developed training for doctors and nurses on the symptoms that victims of drug-facilitated assault can experience.

Contrary to popular belief, most cases occur at home, not at bars, said Ms. Chaouachi, who runs annual surveys on such offenses in France. Most victims are women, the surveys show, and around half of the victims do not remember the attack, because of blackouts, she said.

In the case going to court in Avignon, some of the accused admitted guilt to the police. According to the investigating judge’s report, many claimed that they were tricked into having sex with a drugged woman — lured by a husband for a three-way encounter and told she was pretending to sleep, because she was shy.

Several said they believed that she had consented to being drugged and raped as part of a sex fantasy. Some said they did not believe it was rape, because her husband was there and they believed he could consent for both of them.

“It sends shivers down the spine regarding the state of affairs in French society,” said Mr. Camus, who is also representing Ms. Darian and many other members of the family. “If that’s the conception of consent in sexual matters in 2024, then we have a lot, a lot, a lot of work to do.”

Omsk , officially the Siberian Black League , is a warlord state in Western Siberia. Occupying the territory of the former Omsk Oblast, it borders Tomsk to the north, the Kazakh SSR to the south, Tyumen to the east, and Novosibirsk to the west.

  • 2.2 Cabinet
  • 3.1 Generals

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the city of Omsk, initially held by the West Siberian People's Republic , was seized by a league of ultranationalists sharing views of anti-German sentiment and revanchism. Led by Dmitry Karbyshev 's All-Russian Black League, upon the seizing of Omsk, the ultranationalist regime had to industrialize and fortify it. In a way, some could say it's nothing but a fortified city in which the Black League militarizes and prepares for its future conflicts.

The political system of Omsk is governed as a militarist one-party state since its founding, ruled by Karbyshev and his like-minded comrades of the All-Russian Black League, an organization fanatically devoted to revanchism against the Greater Germanic Reich . However, at heart, Karbyshev is a Russian and while he sought to create an ultranationalist military state to take revenge against Germany, he did not account for the despots that wished to claim as much power as possible from him. Karbyshev is represented in-game as a dying man soon to fall, due to him leading a brutal military dictatorship, while being opposed to the radical rhetoric of his officer clique. The Black League has since become an ultranationalist state, even more radical in their hatred of Germany. Due to Karbyshev's declining health, many of the other officers have gained massive influence in the leadership of Omsk. The reality is that Karbyshev started a movement that assumed it was able to change the hearts of the despots with nationalism rather than terror; but it has since been corrupted beyond his visions, and there is little he can do to stop the train of degeneracy. Indeed, once Karbyshev dies and Omsk is still around, actual ultranationalist and General Dmitry Yazov will assume leadership of the Black League and prevent the despotic cliques from growing.

Under the sheer doctrine of anti-German sentiment, the theory of the “Great Trial” in Omsk comes in. This is where the warlord state will prepare for its final assault on the Reich, as revenge for the “First Trial” which brought the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the “Second Trial” being the West Russian War . Their hatred doesn't stop with just Germany, but it includes many who collaborated with them. Some officers of the Black League even go as far as to want to destroy the United States for not helping enough during the Great Patriotic War. In preparation for their war with Germany, they are expectant of nuclear strikes and so have started to construct massive metro tunnels to double as shelter from the warheads and radioactive fallout. The resolve of the Black League cannot be stopped, even with the threat of nuclear war.

Omsk is one of the hardest paths in TNO, due to it being weaker than a lot of the surrounding warlords and being unable to conduct diplomacy at all. To reunite Russia, Omsk will have to fight every single state in its way. Their end goal is the complete extermination of the Reich and the German people, and they will stop at nothing to reach this. They are hard-coded for hostility and are always at war with someone, but an AI Omsk will almost always never be successful. Despite being founded on nothing but hatred, when they unify Western Siberia and start to emerge on the international stage, they actually try to conceal their ideology and ambitions from foreign influences. They stick with a nondescript name of the “West Siberian Provisional Authority” under the guise of a protective military authority and switch their ideology to “Despotism”.

National spirits

After Dmitry Yazov comes to power and purges the Black League's old guard, the cabinet changes to:

Omsk has at least eleven generals.

  • Ironically, according to a former developer of West Siberia, Omsk at one point had a National Socialist path as a "sane" option, due to now-former head developer Pink Panzer wanting every region in Western Siberia to have multiple paths. This was changed after the other developers convinced him to have Omsk only have one path.
  • Omsk was partially inspired by the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia , a militant group that aspired to carve out an ethnic Armenian homeland in eastern Turkey.
