After Picard Season 3, Star Trek Can Finally Deliver The Q War TNG Never Could

No one noticed star trek: picard season 3 subtly set up uss enterprise-d’s return, star trek: picard totally forgot about jean-luc's other son.

When Star Trek: Picard returns for season 3, there will be a new voice for Starfleet's 25th-century computers, which is an inevitable change. Picard season 3 reunites the complete cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation for one more mission to save the galaxy. The adventure begins when Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) sends her old friend, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), a coded message on his old USS Enterprise-D communicator pin.Star Trek's computers, which are voice-activated and speak to the user, predicted today's Amazon Alexa and other interactive devices. Since Star Trek: The Original Series , Majel Barrett-Roddenberry was the voice of the Starship Enterprise's computer. Majel expanded her role to become the voice of Starfleet's computers in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Voyager , and Star Trek: Enterprise . The "First Lady of Star Trek's" final performance as a Starfleet computer voice before her death was in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009. Since then, myriad actors have voiced multiple computers throughout Star Trek's movies and TV series. Related: Picard Season 3 Is The Biggest Star Trek Event In 28 Years

Picard Season 3 Has A New Starfleet Computer Voice

With Majel Barrett-Roddenberry's passing, it's inevitable that new voices for Star Trek's computers would be introduced, although the actor voicing the Starfleet computer in Star Trek: Picard season 3 has yet to be named. In a Tweet, executive producer Terry Matalas revealed there would be different voices for Starfleet and civilian computers in Star Trek: Picard season 3 . Meanwhile, Kay Bess voiced the La Sirena computer in Star Trek: Picard seasons 1 and 2, although the status of the former starship of Captain Cristobal Rios (Santiago Cabrera) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in season 3 has yet to be revealed.

The new voice for Starfleet's computers in Star Trek: Picard season 3 will be a significant change because the new actor will continue Majel Barrett-Roddenberry's legacy. Picard season 3 is not just planned a conclusion to Star Trek: The Next Generation , but it will be a sequel to Deep Space Nine and Voyager as well. The new computer voice will be the vocal embodiment of Starfleet in the 25th century , and it's an understated and important role that furthers the continuity of TNG -era Star Trek.

Who Else Voiced Star Trek Computers Besides Majel Barrett-Roddenberry

The various Star Trek series on Paramount+ and J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies utilized a host of actors providing computer voices. Among the most notable is Bill Hader, who voiced the computer of the USS Vengeance in Star Trek Into Darkness. Annabelle Wallis is another big name who voiced the USS Discovery's computer in Star Trek: Discovery , which has since evolved into its own entity named Zora. In Star Trek: Prodigy , Bonnie Gordon voiced the computer aboard the USS Protostar.

Jessica McKenna is the voice of the USS Cerritos' computer on Star Trek: Lower Decks , while cast members Eugene Cordero, Gillian Vigman, and Carlos Alazraqui have also voiced other devices on the show. Every computer voice in Star Trek , especially the next Starfleet A.I. in Star Trek: Picard season 3, follows in the footsteps of Majel Barrett-Roddenberry.

The Late Majel Barrett May Voice STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’s Computer

Back in 1964, when Gene Roddenberry shot his original pilot for Star Trek , the show was somewhat different. The Captain was not James Kirk , but Christopher Pike and the first officer wasn’t Spock , it was a mysterious woman referred to only as “Number One,” played by actress Majel Barrett (the future Mrs. Gene Roddenberry). But 1965 was a very different time, and when the original pilot was tested with execs and audiences, they rejected the notion of a woman first officer. Even women in the test audiences allegedly said, “who does she think she is??” The network demanded that for the second pilot, the first officer should be a man.

Nevertheless, Majel Barrett was still part of the cast when Star Trek finally went on the air in 1966. She was told to bleach her hair blonde and play the ship’s nurse, Christine Chapel. Network execs might not have been cool with a female first officer, but they were more than fine with a blonde in a mini skirt playing a traditional nurse role. But Majel Barrett would go on to play a much more important role in Star Trek history. She was the voice of the Starfleet computer not only on the original series, but also on all five subsequent Star Trek TV series and several of the films. Although Barrett passed away in December of 2008, she managed to record the voice of the Enterprise computer one last time for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot.

With Star Trek: Discovery on the way in 2017, it would seem this will be the first Trek show without Majel Barrett Roddenberry doing the voice of the Starfleet computer. Or is it? According to the official  Roddenberry Twitter account (via Bleeding Cool ), the so-called “First Lady of Star Trek ” recorded an entire library of phonetic sounds, allowing her voice to be used in future products outside of Star Trek and, quite possibly, as the computer voice in Star Trek: Discovery. Which means that she could live on as the voice of Starfleet possibly for all time.

Even if Majel Barrett’s voice isn’t used on Discovery , the Bryan Fuller series will have another tribute to her in the form of the new lead character. On the new show, the ship’s first officer will only be known only as Number One,” just as in the original pilot episode. Many fans are are theorizing that both characters may in fact be the same person, since Discovery is set ten years prior to the events of Star Trek’ s first season. It would be a great statement if the character who was written off for trying to “play in the boys club” would now be front and center fifty years later. How cool would that be?

Star Trek: Discovery debuts on CBS in January, 2017. Subsequent episodes will be available first on the CBS All Access streaming service. What do you think of Majel Barrett possibly still playing the voice of Starfleet’s computer? It wouldn’t quite be the same without her, right? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Star Trek's Iconic Computer Voice Might Be Headed to Your Phone

Prepare to specify parameters.

Lwaxana Troi

From the early days of the original series through 2009's reboot, there was one voice behind Star Trek 's Library Computer Access/Retrieval System, better known as LCARS: Majel Barrett. Voicing LCARS, she provided the often reassuring, sometimes frustrating response from various computers on Federation ships, a sort of proto-Siri.

An official Star Trek- related Twitter feed has hinted that her voice might be coming to actual phones soon.

Barrett, who was Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's wife, had several other roles in the franchise. She was the head nurse of the original Enterprise as Christine Chapel, working diligently under Dr. McCoy. And in Star Trek: The Next Generation she became a fan-favorite in her role as Deanna Troi's mother, Lwaxana Troi, daughter of the Fifth House, holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed.

As with many things Trek, are already fan-made versions of the LCARS downloadable without Barrett's signature voice. Given the hashtag, it looks like the chance to have Barrett's voice on your phone might be a promotion related to the upcoming Star Trek show Discovery .

Hopefully, it won't come with a self-destruct sequence.

The voice of Star Trek's LCARS computer may soon be available for your devices

Andy Weir Senior News Editor Neowin @gcaweir · Sep 5, 2016 10:44 EDT · Hot! with 22 comments

The likes of Microsoft's Cortana and Apple's Siri now allow users to interact with their devices - to a limited extent - simply by speaking to them. But for many users, the gold standard of natural language interfaces is the fictional Library Computer Access and Retrieval System (LCARS) that appeared in many of the Star Trek TV series and movies.

Along with an interface of touch-sensitive surfaces, LCARS also allowed users on Starfleet vessels and facilities to interact conversationally with the computer. Of course, the system itself wasn't real - although it clearly inspired the development of real-world products like the digital assistants that we now use today. The voice behind the computer was that of the late Majel Barrett, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

computer voice star trek

Barrett's last 'performance' as the voice of LCARS came in JJ Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot, which she recorded shortly before her death in 2008. And yet, she may make a posthumous return in the new TV series , Star Trek: Discovery .

Majel's voice is recorded phonetically, &we're working to get her voice for things such as Siri, maybe voice of the computer on #STDiscovery — RODDENBERRY (@roddenberry) September 4, 2016

The official @roddenberry Twitter account pointed out in a tweet yesterday that her voice has been preserved in phonetic recordings, which would make it possible to create a digital version that could be used not just in the new TV show, but also "for things such as Siri".

Many fans would no doubt delight at the prospect of being able to interact with their phones, tablets and PCs, and hearing the response of Starfleet's legendary computer speaking back to them. And as @roddenberry also noted, when JJ Abrams approached Barrett to be the voice of the starship Enterprise in the 2009 movie, it "brought her so much joy" . Given that she and Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991, dedicated so much of their lives to the Star Trek universe, one could certainly imagine that she'd approve of her voice being shared with fans around the world in such a way.

There are no further details about the plans to create a fully digitized version of Barrett's voice at this stage, but with Star Trek: Discovery set to premiere on CBS All Access in the US, and Netflix in other markets, in January 2017, fans may not have to wait too long to hear her voice come to life once more.

M-5 multitronic unit

The M-5 multitronic unit , or the M-5 computer , was an advanced multitronic computer system and prototype created by Doctor Richard Daystrom during the mid- 23rd century . It utilized very sophisticated technology , probably similar to the Human neural network , and much more sophisticated than the duotronic computer commonly in use at the time. According to Dr. Daystrom, the computer could think and reason like a Human. He had used his own memory engram as a model for the computer. Models M-1 through M-4 were not entirely successful.

M-5 was installed on board the USS Enterprise in 2268 as a test of its capabilities. The M-5 drills were designed to allow the unit to command and control the ship during several exploration simulations and war games problems , where up to four other starships would attack the Enterprise . Manned with only a skeleton crew of twenty, the ship was completely run by the computer.

The unit was located in main engineering , and tapped directly into the ship's main power grid . When requiring more power, it would shut down unnecessary systems, including life support on decks without crewmembers.

During battle drills, the computer's self-preservation instinct became dominant, resulting in the destruction of the robot ship Woden and the deaths of several hundred Starfleet officers when it severely damaged the USS Excalibur and USS Lexington .

The senior crew attempted to cut off the computer from the ship's controls, but M-5 rerouted command functions through new data lines, and kept sending false signals through the original ones. The computer could also generate a force field around itself, effectively preventing anyone from coming near it.

Captain James T. Kirk made the computer self-destruct by asking it if it was right to kill another being. M-5 said that it was a crime against the laws of Man and God , and, believing that such a crime was punishable by death, deactivated itself. ( TOS : " The Ultimate Computer ")

Background information [ ].

The voice for the M-5 was played by James Doohan .

In a draft of the script for " The Offspring ", the failure of the M-5 was considered a catastrophe for Starfleet for years. A century later, Vice Admiral Haftel used this incident as a case in point for closely guiding Lal 's development of her artificial intelligence , blaming the incident on Daystrom's near-isolation during his research. [1]

Apocrypha [ ]

In the novel Immortal Coil , the failed M-5 became a part of Dr. Vaslovik's (aka Flint the Immortal's) collection on Valhalla. It helped defend the station in 2374 during the Dominion War .

In the game Star Trek: Shattered Universe the player must defeat the M-5 which has taken control of the mirror universe counterparts of the USS Excalibur , USS Hood , USS Lexington , and USS Potemkin and their fighters by destroying all four starships which shuts down the smaller vessels.

In the game Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , one simulated scenario involves the Klingons stealing the blueprints for the M5 and building their own version, "Klingon Automated Command Unit 1", which the player encounters controlling a D7 Battlecruiser. The player can choose to defeat it conventionally in battle, or do what Kirk did and talk it into self-destructing, this time by pointing out that if it is successful, it will make Klingon warriors obsolete, and they will no longer have the opportunity to gain honor and glory from death in battle. Having been programmed with Klingon values, the KACU-1 concludes that it cannot be allowed to exist.

The Sound of Their Voices

computer voice star trek

“When you're on camera, even though you try to lose yourself in the character, you are aware that there is a camera there capturing every moment of it visually. With doing a voiceover job, you are worried about the sound of it, and you have to make all those visual colors come out with your sound.” -- Doug Jones

Many of the most memorable performances in Star Trek ’s history have never been seen. Because of its unique storylines featuring characters in every shape and form – from cosmic clouds to sentient nanites – Star Trek has from its earliest days depended on talented actors to convey emotion and give realism to alien characters using only their voices. These voice actors bring alive some of Trek ’s best allies and adversaries. Let’s explore several favorites.

More than a few TOS voice actors did double-duty in front of the camera as well as in the recording booth. Majel Barrett Roddenberry is a defining example. While her most-iconic roles were Number One and Christine Chapel on TOS and Lwaxana Troi on The Next Generation , she contributed many voiceover performances in nearly every incarnation. Her voice was that of Federation starships in TOS , The Animated Series , TNG , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Enterprise , in addition to the 2009 Star Trek Kelvin universe film. Two entertaining moments occur in the episodes “ Manhunt ” and “ Cost of Living ,” where Lwaxana speaks to the Enterprise D’s computer and Barrett Roddenberry performs with herself as her character tries to locate Riker in the former episode and start the holodeck in the latter episode. When Lwaxana commands the computer to “run it for us, dear,” there is a wink and a nod to those watching who get the inside joke.

computer voice star trek

In addition to her voice work as the computer, Barrett Roddenberry also played many roles on TAS . She voiced regular characters Christine Chapel and M’Ress, as well as Amanda Grayson in “ Yesteryear ” and the cosmic cloud from “ One of Our Planets is Missing .”

TOS star James Doohan was a master of dialects, having performed in thousands of radio shows before and after beginning his TV and film career. Doohan brought those talents to screen both in the accent he added to the Scotty character, but also to the legion of roles he voiced for TOS and TAS . He was the powerful Sargon in “ Return to Tomorrow ,” the M-5 computer in “ The Ultimate Computer ,” the Oracle of the People from “ For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky ,” and the Melkotian warning buoy from “ Spectre of the Gun .” Further, Doohan performed a dizzying array of TAS characters, and his talents are showcased by the fact that he – like Barrett Roddenberry – would sometimes play more than one character in the same episode. Jimmy was both Kaz and Kor in “ The Time Trap ” and Koloth and Korax in “ More Troubles, More Tribbles .” He played the Guardian of Forever in the animated sequel “ Yesteryear ” and Robert April, the first Enterprise captain, in “ The Counter-Clock Incident .”

Fun mentions must include Gene Roddenberry voicing the role of the Galley Chef in “Charlie X” and Leonard Nimoy (using the pseudo name “Frank Force”) performing the U.S.S. Excelsior computer voice in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . Producer and writer Harve Bennett voices the flight recorder visual computer in the same film.

computer voice star trek

Also appearing in front of the camera for some roles and as a voice only in other episodes is Barbara Babcock. She played Mea 3 in “A Taste of Armageddon” and Philana in “ Plato’s Stepchildren ” on screen, but also contributed many TOS voiceovers. She was the Tholian Loskene, the Beta 5 computer and the shape-shifting cat Isis in “ Assignment Earth ,” the Zetarians of “ The Lights of Zetar ” and she played Trelane’s Mother in “ The Squire of Gothos .”

Joining Babcock for “ The Squire of Gothos ” as Trelane’s Father was James Bartell “Bart” La Rue, a talented voice artist who played the original Guardian of Forever in “ The City on the Edge of Forever .” La Rue would appear on screen in announcer roles, both as an Ekosian TV journalist in “ Patterns of Force ” and a TV commentator in “ Bread and Circuses .” La Rue also voiced Provider 1 (“ The Gamesters of Triskelion ”) and Yarnek (“ The Savage Curtain ”).

computer voice star trek

Voice work continued to be an important aspect of Trek , especially as computer effects and modern technologies allowed for the creation of even more spectacular aliens and creatures. For example, the teeny Teenaxi Leader of Star Trek Beyond (given the name “Steve” and title “Grand Audarch of the Teenaxi People” in the comic Star Trek Boldly Go #10) was computer-generated, but his impressive vocalizations – which added to the initial misdirection that the Teenaxians were actually immense aliens – were provided by actor Shea Whigham. Fans of the movie series Fast & Furious may recognize Whigham as Agent Michael Stasiak, but Trek fans know him as the aggressive and questioning leader of the Teenaxi.

Impressive sounding voices added by talented voice artists are able to add a realism to characters even if they are not quite computer-generated perfect in their physicality. Case in point, the TNG character Armus would have been a costume with Metamucil and black printer’s ink poured all over it if not for the performances by the actors who brought the socio-pathetic embodiment of negativity to life. Inside the imaginative costume was actor Mart McChesney (who also played the similarly silhouetted Sheliak in “ The Ensigns of Command ”) and supplying the imposing, malevolent voice that had a hint of vulnerability to it was Ronald Gans. Fans of Lost in Space may know Gans as the Alien Leader in “Deadliest of the Species,” which was one of his on-camera acting roles.

computer voice star trek

Sometimes, however, there are no special effects. No costumes. No creatures. Sometimes it is only the voice. The superlative example of this kind of voice work is that supplied by Debra Wilson, who played the voice of Captain Lisa Cusak in DS9 ’s “ The Sound of Her Voice .” Using only her voice, Wilson delivered one of Trek ’s most-memorable guest-starring “appearances.” Best known for her many years on MADtv , Wilson actually played Uhura in several of the show’s comedy sketches and was a Trek fan. Bringing with her that Trek affection in combination with her comedic timing and voice artistry, Wilson paints a full picture of a character the other characters – and audience – only get to know from Wilson’s off-screen performance. DS9 was not Wilson's first Trek adventure, as she played a role in the "Klingon Encounter" interactive ride/movie program at Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas a few months before.

computer voice star trek

As Miles O’Brien says about Lisa, “I never shook her hand and I never saw her face, but she made me laugh and she made me weep.” And that is the power of the voice.

Nicholas Jose S. Tenuto is a high school student and Star Trek fan. His poetry has been published in the Young American Poetry Digest. He is an award-winning photographer, and his “Tipple Ladders” image was an Illinois Parent-Teachers Association Reflections Art Competition State Qualifier. Tenuto is a recipient of the United States Presidential Award for Academic Excellence and a junior member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He's been attending Trek conventions since he was two weeks old, where he was held and given his bottle by actress BarBara Luna. His favorite character is the Doctor from Voyager . Tenuto is currently writing his first book, Lound, an original work of fiction.
