2 Days in Burgundy: Itinerary for 48 Hours in Beaune & Cote d’Or (+ Map)

Three words: French. Wine. Country! Burgundy is one of France ’s greatest wine regions, dotted with grand chateaux and biscuit-coloured villages where it seems that time stands still. We spent two days in Burgundy in June this year, which was the perfect introduction to this exceptional corner of France. You could spend so much longer exploring the region, but 48 hours in Burgundy is a great place to start for first time visitors. 

It is the birthplace of France’s famed haute cuisine, as well as iconic French dishes like coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon, making it the perfect destination for slowing down and embracing the French joie de vivre.  Below, I’ve shared our itinerary for 2 days in Burgundy, including our favourite wineries & restaurants.

We visited Burgundy halfway through our one month trip in Europe & the UK. We’d come from 5 days in Paris , and after Burgundy we went to Alsace – another spectacular surprise. It was my fifth time in France (& Paris !), but Burgundy was new to me. I was so excited to discover a new corner of France!

Burgundy, France: The heart of French wine country

In the 15th century, Burgundy was one of the richest & most powerful states in Europe, a legacy which has provided the foundations for its rich gastronomic culture. Today, Burgundy is part of Bourgogne-Franche Comte, and is one of the most influential wine regions in France. 

Burgundy is home to some of the grandest wine chateau estates in France, which produce a number of Grand Crus and Premier Cru wines, along with dozens of revered regional and village appellations. A number of Burgundy regions are household names, like Chablis and the Macon villages (both known for its white burgundy, chardonnay) and revered in the wine world, like Cote de Beaune, Cote de Nuits and Nuits-Saint-Georges appellations. The vineyards of Burgundy have achieved UNESCO World Heritage status, for their humanity and exceptional universal value. 

Burgundy predominantly produces chardonnay and pinot noir; only wines made from either of these grapes, produced in burgundy can use the name “burgundy.” 

Burgundy is also the birthplace of haute cuisine, France’s greatest cultural export. It is only natural that a place with such superb wine, perfected a cuisine to go with it. 

The film Chocolat is set in Burgundy, in a town called Flavigny sur Ozerain. It was a little too far out of our way to justify stopping in, but it was chosen because it was emblematic of a typical Burgundian village!

We stayed in Beaune, the primary town in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or. Beaune is a beautiful and historic walled down, and is the perfect base for exploring the best wineries in Burgundy. 

The Cote d’Or, a small region which is home to some of Burgundy’s most prized appellations, like Pommard, Meursault, Nuits-St-Georges and Volnay. 

We stayed at Hotel Belle Epoque in Beaune, which is a former wine merchant house, converted into a charming small hotel with traditional Burgundian style. The rooms are large, and felt like we were staying in a large country house. Would recommend!

We took the high speed train, the TGV , from Paris to Beaune, with a change at Dijon. Dijon is the capital of Burgundy, and I’ve always wanted to visit. We had all of our luggage with us, so I was tempted to find a luggage locker and spend an hour or so walking around the city, but it would have cut more into our time in Burgundy which was already brief. 

We had purchased our ticket from Paris to Dijon in advance on the TGV, which is advisable since they can sell out. The TGV is amazing. We had the cheapest seats and they were still more like Business Class than economy. Super clean, comfortable and so efficient! I loved travelling around France by train.

We changed trains at Dijon, and bought our tickets on the regional train at Dijon station. There’s no need to book local train tickets in advance.  The TGV takes 90 minutes from Paris to Dijon, and the local train from Dijon to Beaune takes 30 minutes.

Our time in Burgundy was spent in the Cote d’Or, which is the most prestigious of Burgundy’s winemaking regions, and contains the famous subregion, Cote de Nuits. We  spent the first day exploring Beaune, which is the regional centre in this part of Burgundy, and is a beautiful, historic Burgundian town.

Exploring Beaune

We walked from Beaune Station to our hotel, Hotel Belle Epoque , which is located outside the walls of Beaune. Beaune is tiny, so the hotel is actually very well located. There weren’t any taxis at the station when we arrived, so we walked to our hotel. We were hiring a car in Burgundy, but we’d only hired it for the following day, because we planned to spend our first day exploring Beaune.

Beaune is a historic walled town in the centre of the Cote d’Or’s winemaking region, and is the wine capital of Burgundy (the official capital is Dijon). There are still pre-Roman and Roman features that can be found in Beaune, but most of the city is from Medieval, Renaissance and later periods. The 15th century Hospices de Beaune is Beaune’s crown jewel, and home to the most important wine auction in France every year. Beaune is surrounded by some of the most famous villages and vineyards in Burgundy, and many of the wineries have tasting rooms in Beaune.

We spent the afternoon exploring Beaune, wine tasting and enjoying the beautiful weather. 

Beaune Wine Tasting at Marche aux Vins

Our first wine tasting was at Marche aux Vins , a boutique wine market with self guided wine tastings, near the Hospices de Beaune and Place Carnot. This is a perfect spot for an introduction to Burgundy wine, especially as it’s located centrally, carries a range of wines and the self guided tour is not intimidating at all. The first part of the tasting explores white burgundy, in the caves underneath the March aux Vins. We had the caves to ourselves, and self-pouring was a fun novelty. 

The second part of the tour is upstairs, where the red burgundy tastings are a little more tightly controlled. They’re dispensed from a machine, and you scan the QR code on your ticket to get your allotted tastings.

Afterwards we went to another tasting room & boutique, a few doors down, where the manager was so warm and friendly, and so patient with my slow French! Naturally, more wine was purchased.

Place Carnot in Beaune

Place Carnot is impossibly pretty and impossibly French. Lined with restaurants and bars with outdoor seating, this was my favourite spot to spend the warm summer evenings in Beaune. We had a glass of wine and shared a cheeseboard at Aux Hospices Bar a Vins, which has since closed. I am a massive cheesehead, and had been picking up local cheeses for a picnic lunch everywhere on our trip so far – in Dublin, Edinburgh, London and Paris. I was finally defeated by the cheeseboard we shared in Burgundy, which was enormous and quite rich. It cured me of my cheese addiction for the rest of the trip!

We’d had an early start, so we had a nap back at the hotel before wandering back into town for dinner. There are more historic sights to see in Beaune, like the Hospices de Beaune, but for me, part of being on a holiday is not having every minute scheduled. An afternoon nap & wandering around to find dinner is an A+ holiday evening in my books!

In the evening, we spent a while exploring the streets of Beaune before settling on drinks at Les Chevaliers followed by dinner in Place Carnot at Maison Jules , which I can highly recommend.

Our full day in Burgundy was spent exploring the winemaking villages of the Cote d’Or, including visits to Chateau de Meursault, Caveaux Moillard, Chateau du Chassagne-Montrachet and Chateau Pommard. My favourites were our first and last stops, which combined a magnificent chateau setting with warm and attentive hosts. We stumbled upon one of the greatest meals of our life in Meursault, where we stopped for lunch, and had a beautiful dinner at a popular local restaurant in Beaune in the evening.

Booking wine tastings in advance is advisable, but we had decided to risk it on this trip. I was reluctant to have a tight itinerary on this part of the trip, and wanted to be able to slow down, explore and enjoy Burgundy at a leisurely pace. I also wanted to have time for surprises and local recommendations. Surprisingly, this strategy worked perfectly and there was only one winery which we had really needed a reservation for.

Chateau de Meursault

Chateau de Meursault is one of the best wineries that we visited in Burgundy, and had one of the best tasting experiences. Chateau de Meursault has more than 100 plots, including 5 Grand Crus, 18 Premier Crus and a dozen village and regional appellations. It is one of the grandest wine estates in Burgundy, and can trace the history of it’s site for the last thousand years, when the Duke of Burgundy conceded the fiefdom, now the estate, to one of his squires in the 11th century. 

We walked in without a reservation, and were immediately looked after. It was not too busy, as we arrived just after opening. The wines were beautiful, and we bought a bottle of white burgundy to gift to our friends we were staying with in Zurich, later in the trip. I wish we could have shipped a case of it home, but the international shipping and custom duties in Australia are prohibitively expensive.

Le Caveaux Moillard de Nuits-Saint-Georges

The Caveaux Moillard tasting room is located separately to the winery, and is a modern, purpose-built space for wine tastings & sales. The host who guided our tasting was so friendly and knowledgeable, and was wonderful at explaining the region works, as well as details about the Moillard wines. This was a great stop, and I’m pretty sure we bought a bottle here too.

The lunch we had in Meursault is one of the most memorable meals I’ve had in my life. When we did a bit of research online, another restaurant was recommended in the centre of town. It was busy, and there would be a long wait. It was full of what mostly seemed to be tourists, and to be honest, I wasn’t overwhelmed by the setting or what I was seeing on the tables. Instead, we kept looking and found this quiet courtyard restaurant at Hotel Le Globe . This was not your typical hotel restaurant!

It really should be no surprise that one of the greatest and oldest wine regions in the world, has a rich and sophisticated gastronomy. We found that even at small, relaxed restaurants, the food was of an exceptional standard. Even if you’re not a drinker, I would argue that Burgundy is worth a visit for the food (and the villages) alone!

Beyond the food, and warm service, the sunny courtyard setting was heaven. I think nearly all of my favourite meals have been in a sunny courtyard on a leisurely afternoon!

Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet

We drove on some lovely tiny back roads between the vineyards from Meursault to our next stop at Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet . This is the only cellar door we visited where we really did need a reservation. We waited for around 10-15 minutes while the manager was with an American couple who were buying a lot of wine, which was fine. We had a brief tasting of the entry-level wines, which was nice but honestly felt a bit awkward and rushed. It was fine, but I would recommend making a reservation at this one if you do want to visit. For us, since we couldn’t ship any wine home anyway, we preferred to have the flexibility and opportunity for spontaneity than to have a tight itinerary, so it was okay.

We stopped briefly in Volnay, but couldn’t find what we were looking for – I think we were looking for a cellar door, and it was closed or we couldn’t find it. The town seemed to be asleep in the late afternoon, which is typical of small towns in regional France, and other parts of Europe. We had a brief look around, before hopping back in the car for our final winery of the day, Chateau Pommard.

Chateau de Pommard

Chateau de Pommard was one of my favourite wineries that we visited in Burgundy, and easily the grandest. Established in 1726, Chateau de Pommard is one of the oldest wine estates in the Cote d’Or, and the 300 year old chateau and clos are both UNESCO protected.

If a winery is a Chateau, it means the land and the winery was formerly the property of the King. Not surprisingly, these are some of the most prestigious wineries in France, and have some of the best conditions for producing premium wines. We only had to wait for 15 minutes to begin the tasting, which is a private guided tour and tasting. There was a brief introduction to the chateau’s history, and the seven different types of soil found within Clos Marey-Monge. It was discovered relatively recently that within the single clos, there were 7 different types of soil, in different areas. They still offer wines in their original style, using grapes taken from across the clos, but now also create wines that are produced only from a single plot within the clos, from a single soil. You can taste the difference!

Chateau de Pommard balances heritage and tradition with innovation and sustainability, having begun the transformation into a sustainable vineyard in 2016, and has been certified biodynamic since 2021.

La Moutarderie Fallot

We tried to make it back into town in time to do the tour at Patriarche Pere et Fils , a winery with more than 5km of tunnels underneath Beaune, but we arrived 30 minutes before closing and they wouldn’t let us in. I read mixed reviews about this online so I wasn’t too disappointed, but it’s probably something I’d try and do next time I was there, out of curiosity. 

Instead, we visited La Moutarderie Fallot , an artisanal mustard factory, museum and tasting room.  I love mustard, and so I was very keen to pick up some from the source. Fallot was established in 1840 and is the last independent, family-owned mustard mill in Burgundy. Entry to the gift shop/tasting room, or “boutique-atelier” as it is called, is free. It was near our hotel so it was a fun way to spend half an hour before dinner. 

I nearly blew my head off tasting some extremely hot mustards, and bought a couple of take home. Unfortunately the larger jar was confiscated in Zurich airport because they considered it a liquid (despite having grams listed on the bottle, not mL!).

Dinner & drinks in Beaune

We returned to Place Carnot, which was buzzing in the early evening and last hours of sunshine for the day. We had a glass of wine at Bar 66 , a very popular wine bar with patio seating. I really liked this spot & would recommend it!

We walked a couple of blocks to Au Coq Bleu for dinner, a very charming and cosy restaurant that serves traditional Burgundian cuisine and was full of local diners. We had the loveliest meal, including the traditional Burgundian entree oeufs en meurette (eggs in red wine)  before ambling back to our hotel.

Next Stop: Alsace!

The next morning, we returned to the Beaune train station, to catch a train to Colmar (again, via Dijon), for the next leg of our trip in Alsace . It was not easy to leave Burgundy, but we were both completely spellbound by the Alsatian villages we’d discover over the next few days.

There are few times in life I have been so convinced that I have stepped into a fairytale picture book and suffice it so say that Beaune is one such place I believe magic has occurred. Just like the towns of a Disney film or my all-time favourite film Chocolat, Beaune has an otherworldly appeal unlike any other French town . Dainty and prettier than a postcard, this town is just a few hours from Paris and should be a staple in any French discovery tour. So, what are you waiting for? Here is your complete guide to Beaune!

Musee de l’Hotel-Dieu

At the centre of town is Beaune’s most iconic architectural structure: the musee de l’Hotel-Dieu. This former hospital built in the 15th century is without a doubt the town’s most recognisable structure and a good point of reference as you peruse the winding streets that are not only illogically formed, but extremely uneven – so watch where you’re going!

Every Saturday the small towns and villages of France come to life with the sights, sounds and smells of market day. Beaune is no exception. Whether you’re looking for smelly cheese or one cute dog watch, there’s plenty of taste testers and pooch’s to admire as you wade through the crowds from one vendor to the next.

Your guide to Beaune: Eats & Drinks

As the wine capital of Burgundy, there’s plenty of great drops to enjoy and equally good food to be found in a handful of restaurant categories. The most memorable restaurants I found were out in the countryside – housed in real kitchens, countryside manors or as roadtrip stops with thanks to the popularity of the Michelin guide in France. In Beaune itself I often found myself passing time in small cafes and patisseries, fuelling up with carbs before a day cycling through the French countryside (as athletic as that may sound, I was often cycling from one cellar door to the next).

Upper Coffee Shop

This cute little coffee shop is a personal favourite in town. The coffee is good (surprisingly still a difficult feat in France) and the prices are friendly like the staff.

Patisserie Fabien Berteau

Before arriving to Beaune I had done some prior research to discover where to find the best macarons: Patisserie Fabien Berteau was the unanimous winner. As it turns out the macarons were immemorable, but the tangy lemon tart was one of the best I’ve ever had and subsequently lasted an entirety of 4 seconds in my hands before it was completely devoured.

Around the Region

As Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy, there are many vineyards and open cellar doors to experience the regional wines in their many varietals. I would suggest hiring a bike for the day, asking for a map of the region, and setting off to cycle between towns and chateaus – stopping at wherever tickles your fancy along the way.

For my stay in town, I checked in to the glorious Hotel Le Cep – a highly celebrated family-owned hotel located just a few minutes from the centre of town. Each of the rooms are decorated in unique colours and fabrics, making for a unique experience every time you visit.

Best time of year to visit Beaune

September through November are considered the best times of year to visit Beaune and theBurgundy region, though I would argue there really is no bad time to visit. My first visit to Beaune in September was full of sunshine and clear blue skies and my most recent visit was more grey and moody in April. If you’re hoping for the best weather, June-August are the summer months but also the busiest. Thus to have the best of both worlds, the best time of year is between summer and winter in September, October or November.

I visited the city of Beaune on a 7 day river cruise with Avalon Waterways . All opinions and photos are my own and I’d highly recommend taking the time to enjoy a river cruise for those preferring a more relaxed approach to visiting France!

Beaune is a city in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté , France . Beaune has much to recommend as it is a bustling, wealthy, and charming place of pilgrimage for art lovers, wine lovers, and gastronomes.

Understand [ edit ]

Beaune succeeded Dijon as capital of the Duchy of Burgundy in its glory days. Today, Dijon is again the capital of Burgundy, a much bigger city, and an important site of industry as well as culture.

For the typical tourist, Beaune is a half-day town. The historic centre is charming and a pleasant place to walk around. The Hôtel-Dieu is a must-see but takes only about an hour or so. For the food and wine lover, there is not enough to time to spend in and around Beaune. Nearly every town along the Côte-d'Or has a fabulous restaurant and multiple places to taste wine. Even though the wine appellations in the Côte-d'Or are not far apart, the wines produced in relatively close appellations vary dramatically. The vineyards around Beaune form together with the historical centre of Dijon the world heritage site "Climats, terroirs of Burgundy".

Beaune makes a good base for exploring other small wine towns in the Côte-d'Or. It is centrally located about halfway along the wine route, and other famous nearby wine towns like Montrachet, Pommard, and Nuits-Saint-Georges are all a short drive from Beaune.

Beaune is easily accessible by the motorways A6, A31, and A36 and is 2.5 h from Paris and 45 min from Lyon .

By train [ edit ]

There are regular trains departing from DIjon Gare to Beaune. It takes only 20 minutes and is one stop away; a one way ticket costs €8 (as of 2016). Beaune has a direct link from Paris -Bercy by Regional Express train (3½ hours). However, it is faster to take the TGV from Paris-Lyon to Dijon and connect to a local train (2½ hours). There are occasionally services from Paris-Lyon directly to Beaune, without the need to transfer.

Beaune is a good city for walking. The old centre of town is compact and is surrounded by a ring street that follows the old city walls. Park the old center of town and walk in. There are a number of parking lots on the ring roads.

A car is required to explore the surrounding wine towns in the Côte-d'Or.

There is an outdoor market every Saturday morning. A wide variety of goods, including food, is available at this market. Note that the city is very crowded on market days. There is a Leclerc hypermarket on the outskirts of town, close to the exit of the A6.

There are many good restaurants in Beaune. Classic Burgundian dishes include beef bourguignon, coq au vin, oeufs meurette, escargot, and Époisses cheese.

Sightseeing in Beaune, capital of Burgundy wines

Beaune is without a doubt the capital of the Burgundy vineyard, both in the eyes of wine connoisseurs and fans of this wine town.  There are some unmissable sights such as the Hospices de Beaune, winemaking estates and fine-dining establishments, activities based on wine such as tasting classes and tours of the cellars. Visit Beaune, along the Wine Route

You'll need at least two days to visit the town of Beaune, or even longer if you plan on continuing your exploration in the Côte and Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. The Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne (Burgundy Wine Route) then leads to the east, towards Nuits-Saint-Georges and Dijon or to the south, towards Saône-et-Loire.

The Hospices de Beaune

This 15th-century hospital with flamboyant Gothic-style architecture and multicoloured roofing, shows the direct connections there once were between Flanders and the Dukes of Burgundy.

Inside, the unmissable rooms are the "Pôvres" room with the famous red canopy beds, the apothecary and the remarkable painting of the Last Judgement by Rogier Van der Weyden.

The Maison des Climats du Vignoble de Bourgogne

This centre offers an unmissable, free exhibition to learn all about the "Climats" of Burgundy's vineyard , listed as World Heritage by UNESCO since 2015. 

This enjoyable exhibition is suitable for everyone, to understand the notion of "Climats", the vine plots that have been meticulously divided and named for centuries by the winegrowers of Burgundy.

There is a cycle route that runs alongside the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne (Burgundy Wine Route), south of Beaune from Santenay and Nolay and in the east, as far as Nuits-Saint-Georges and Dijon. Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Côte-d'Or

A Town of Art and History and the capital of Burgundy wine, Beaune is located forty kilometres or so south of Dijon and boasts some exceptional heritage. Surrounded by old ramparts, it is known as the centre for the Burgundy wine trade, as evidenced by the famous auction at the Hospices de Beaune every third Sunday in November.

The old town contains some remarkable monuments and has some beautiful Renaissance mansions for visitors to admire, as well as pretty half-timbered houses and charming inner courtyards. Take the time to stroll around, to see Beaune's architectural treasures at your own pace or using an audioguide.

The first stop along the way: the Hôtel-Dieu, a gem of Burgundian medieval architecture, built in the 15th century at the request of the Duke of Burgundy's Chancellor, Nicolas Rolin, to come to the aid of the poor and sick. A listed Historic Monument, this superb complex with its famous varnished tile roofs has become a museum of medical history. On your visit, you can in particular admire the magnificent ceremonial courtyard (cour d'honneur), the impressive Hall for the Poor (Salle des Pôvres), the Gothic chapel, the kitchen and the apothecary, as well as a masterpiece of Flemish painting dating from the 15th century: the polyptych of the Last Judgment, attributed to the artist Rogier van der Weyden. The world's biggest wine auction takes place here in November, with part of the proceeds going towards the upkeep of the Hôtel-Dieu.

Not far from there, on Rue Paradis, is the mansion of the Dukes of Burgundy, which you can visit. A listed Historic Monument, this old ducal palace from the 14th century now houses the Museum of Burgundy Wine, where the history of the vineyard and winemaking is told through ethnographic and artistic collections, tapestries and everyday objects used by winegrowers.

All around the Beaune region, there are cellar tours, tastings and organised excursions in the vineyard so you can learn about Burgundy's winegrowing heritage.

Another unmissable monument is the Cluniac-inspired Collegiate Church of Our Lady. This superb 13th-century edifice, one of the last big Romanesque churches in Burgundy, possesses a Gothic portal and chevet, as well as a Renaissance bell tower. Inside is a collection of five tapestries from the 15th century illustrating the life of the Virgin, a Renaissance chapel and a black Virgin from the 12th century.

Beaune has a busy and lively cultural life all year. One of the most prestigious Baroque music festivals in Europe takes place there in July.

A 40 km south of Dijon , this small town, ringed like a drum by its ramparts and bastions, and is still in the early 21th century the center of the Burgundy wine trade. In its venerable wineries ripen nicely nectars called "still wine".

Parliamentary capital in the fifteenth century in the duchy of Burgundy, which prefigured Europe, this city of art and history shows all the spiritual, cultural economic and soon a province in the heart of Europe.

On the ramparts, a Hotel Dieu never ceases to redeem the "sins" of a great servant of the "state Bourguignon": Nicolas Rolin. This famous site visited by over 400,000 people each year, boasts justly of a masterpiece of Flemish painting: the altarpiece of the Last Judgment attributed to the painter Rogier van der Weyden.

In a city where you can still wander, we discover a ducal palace converted into a museum of wine and located between Paradise Street and the Rue d'Enfer - it does not just happen! -. Emerging from the same street, coincidence?, The gaze is on the collegiate basilica of Our Lady, youngest daughter told of the Abbey of Cluny.

And still, to homes in mansions, a whole society scrolls, aristocrats of the sword or dresses, but also merchants and notable artists, Felix Ziem painted Venice ... and Jules Marey invents itself as one of the fathers of cinema.

A vineyard has 580 hectares of red wines from the Pinot Noir. An exceptional domain which 320 hectares in the first vintage (the largest surface first thought of all the coast). Firm, frank, colorful, full of fire and bouquet, soft, these are the wines Beaune. The Duke of Clarence sentenced to death by his brother the king of England exclaimed: "I wish to be drowned in a butt of wine Beaune that my death is effortless and good". What better promotion ...

Gastronomy is an integral part of the life of a Burgundian. Fine dining, full of tradition and innovation.

A good table is carefully balanced: the puffs and cheese appetizers around a Kir to whet the appetite. A marbled ham or Burgundy snails , or eggs in red wine sauce make a delicious entry. Then comes the beef bourguignon , coq au vin, quail at the vineyard, the Burgundian stew, ham with wine lees. All these casseroles agree so well with the wines of the region.

• Beaune, whose heritage is experiencing astonishing preservation, allows visitors and residents to enjoy a privileged setting. Rounded in its walls, Beaune offers a harmonious face and charming where the timbered medieval mingle, the sweetness of Romanesque architecture and delightful mansions of the fifteenth and sixteenth century.
• Museum of Fine Arts is in the beautiful architectural ensemble of the Porte Marie de Bourgogne, the museum presents its rich collections of the twelfth to the twentieth century. Do not miss: the Flemish and Dutch paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and native son, Felix Ziem, famous for its many views of Venice and its Orientalist paintings.
• Hotel-Dieu: jewel Beaune and Burgundy , the famous Hôtel-Dieu initiated in 1443 by Chancellor Nicolas Rolin is a masterpiece of the Franco-Flemish art and a wonderful witness of civil architecture of the Middle Age. In the inner courtyard of the famous glazed tile roofs you will discover the splendor of a hospital established "for the rest of the bodies and souls."
• Musee du Vin de Bourgogne housed in the charming Hotel des Ducs de Bourgogne fifteenth century, it was designed in the spirit of "Arts and Traditions". Just push a door to get into the history of wine. On the first floor, let yourself go in the imaginary world of wine through the decor Aubusson tapestries made by Lurçat Tourlière.
• Church Notre-Dame Basilica: "Daughter of Cluny" dominated the art novel, Our Lady tells us the history of the Burgundian religious architecture from the twelfth to the sixteenth century. Take time to admire the ornate chorus of five remarkable tapestries of the fifteenth century depicting the Virgin's life, the house and the lovely little medieval cloister. At the exit, take your fancy as the Rue d'Enfer, or Paradise.
• The Dalineum: in the intimate atmosphere of a private mansion, an extraordinary private collection of works by Dali: 250 drawings, paintings, sculptures and furniture. • Wine Auction of the Hospices de Beaune: it is certainly the most famous Burgundian events. The third Sunday in November, takes place at the Hotel-Dieu "selling wines hospices Beaune". The sale is preceded on Saturday "chapter" of the Brotherhood of the Knights of Tastevin.

• International Festival of Baroque opera Beaune: Beaune festival is one of the most prestigious festivals of baroque music in Europe. It thus continues the musical tradition of the court of the Dukes of Burgundy considered one of the brightest and most sumptuous 15th century.
• Ciné retro: the silent film festival in live performance. Retro film is an invigorating the spirit of burlesque directors and actors of the generation of Chaplin and Buster Keaton tribute. Designed as a complete show for all the blondes as gray temples heads, retro film is an invitation to explore the cinematic heritage of 20 years in his short films as rare in his blockbusters.
• Beaune Jazz - jazz festival Burgundy wines: a tasting and two evening concerts, art exhibitions, film screenings, a fun and educational presentation for children, jazz masterclass, training in tasting Wine, jazz Beaune is above all Epicurean. Rhythm, flavors and tastes for staging all directions.
• Living breads, wines, cheeses: 460 varieties of cheeses from all over France, nearly 20 wineries, a joyous medley of breads, await visitors at the show bread, wine, cheese every year in October.
• The 24h Beaune: The 24h Beaune are an original concept which include both humor and sporting achievement. Each team consists of 8 people, designs and produces a non-motorized travel at least two crew prototype. The conditions of acceptance of the vehicle is controlled in a very precise technical file and the race itself collects all the characteristics of a great sporting event. Additional curiosity, all participating teams are required to create a new car with a general theme decor gear, theme imposed by the organizers.
• Exhibition at the flea market: from February to October. These fairs are very popular and sought after by bargain hunters. They take place in the famous halls of the city hosting the big auction of world wine sales hospices Beaune.
• Beaune flavors Vignes Beaune, flavors vineyards, invites you to discover the vineyards and gourmet wines Beaune, walk the vineyards. Six kilometers an easy route for families and 5 gourmet steps to enjoy the range of wines Beaune. The tastings will be guided by the winemakers. Musical entertainment, arts are planned for this special day.
• Thriller Film Festival: program competition films, the main challenge of the event, which will include a dozen films. Another competition will be present, entitled "New Blood". With roughly five films, she will reward filmmakers who offer work apparently offset from the genre, but in reality, bring a fresh perspective, often social. A selection of short films will also be a place with a jury solely dedicated to it. As the previous sections of the festival of Cognac, a tribute will be paid to a person in the literary world that is part of the detective genre. Finally, a jury of personalities from literature and cinema award the grand prize of noir and the French international to authors whose quality work will be the only selection criterion.
• The winemakers Beaune celebrate St Vincent and the areas Beaune houses open their doors and invite you to enter the unique world of St. Vincent. On the occasion of St. Vincent, the winemakers Beaune decided to share with you the party in which they pay homage to their patron saint.

Beaune travel guide: Five ideas for wine and food lovers

• Hire a bike and enjoy a gentle ride through the vines from Beaune to Pommard
• See inside the fabled Hospices de Beaune

Cycling through the Beaune vineyards

The bike track meandering through vineyards between Beaune and Pommard.

You can walk out to the vineyards from Beaune centre in around 20 minutes, or get a sneak peek via the city’s tourist ‘train’; think more open-top bus ride than Napa wine train .

But hiring a bike is a great way to see more of the vines if you have some extra time.

There is a designated cycle track right through the vineyards and it is predominantly flat for the 20-or-so minutes it takes to reach Pommard.

There is then a mild climb up to Volnay, and you can even carry on all the way down the Côte de Beaune, through Meursault, and eventually ending around Santenay if you’re feeling the need to work off last night’s dinner.

Bike hire starts from €20 per person at ‘ Bourgogne Vélo Evasion ‘ cycle hire station, which is on the route out to the vineyards.

Remember that you will likely need to call or book ahead if you want to stop at specific wineries for tastings along the way.

Otherwise, the route is perfect for a picnic.

Visiting Hospices de Beaune

With it ornate roof tiles and imposing structure, it’s hard to miss the Hospices de Beaune , originally opened as a ‘palace for the poor’ in the 15th century. It hosts one of the world’s most famous wine auctions every November, as many readers will know.

The Musée de l’Hotel Dieu is open from 9am until 18h30, and stays open until 19h30 for anyone already inside after this point.

Beaune restaurants, bars and shops 

Pâtisserie fabien berteau.

Fabien Berteau was named France’s best pastry chef by the respected Gault Millau restaurant guide in 2015 and he has since opened up in Beaune, just a stone’s throw from the Hospices de Beaune.

Whether you want a morning croissant, macaron or afternoon sweet treat, this ‘salon de thé’ is well worth the trip. Not that you’ll have to look far to find artisan bakeries in Beaune.  CM.

La Maison du Colombier

Roland Chanliaud brought some of his favourite bottles with him when moving to this wine bar from Le Jardin des Remparts .

There is speedily served food – charcuterie, cheeses and tapas – with many wines by the glass. There are also rooms for those looking to stay the night.

Fromagerie Alain Hess

A must-visit on Place Carnot for a wide range of cheeses and local items, including the renowned Epoisses from the Côte d’Or.

Also be sure to buy some of France’s best chocolate, from Chocolatier Bonnat. All chocoholics like me will want to stock up here.  AH.

Caves Madeleine

Long-serving chef Martial is now the owner here; careful cooking and friendly service are maintained. You can share a long table with other guests, or eat at small tables. This place is passionate about fine ingredients and has interesting wines by glass and bottle.

Bissoh – Sushi

A classic venue in Beaune for those seeking Japanese delicacies, together with a fine wine list. Michelin inspectors recently described Japanese chef Mikihiko Sawahata as a ‘master’ of the kitchen. Call +33(0)380240102 to book.  AH [updated].

Boucherie Vossot

For a picnic overlooking the vines, this is Beaune’s best butcher. You can get local parsley ham, pâtés and terrines, or slices of rosette saucisson – there are more than 60 home-made items. Tel: +33(0)380222974.  AH.

Le Bistrot du Bord de l’Eau, Hostellerie Levernois

Just a 10-minute drive from Beaune, this a charming, stream-side spot in summer, or snuggle up to an open fire in winter. Fine food with Relais & Château service, at bistro prices.  AH.

Le Comptoir des Tontons

Seasonal ingredients are locally sourced from small farms and market gardeners, then cooked with care by Pépita. The brave can experiment with ‘natural’ wines alongside many Burgundian classics.  AH.

La Vinothèque wine shop

You won’t be short of options for buying wine, naturally, but La Vinothèque near l’Hôtel Dieu has a good selection from the local area and further afield in the Côte d’Or, plus very knowledgeable staff who will happily let you explore the downstairs ‘cellar’ section of the shop on request.  CM.

Restaurant La Ciboulette

Always a warm welcome here from the patronne, Madame Mâle, with dependable bourgeois cooking, interesting bottles on the list and friendly pricing. Tel:+33(0)380247072.  AH.

La Dilettante

A wine bar with food, whose owner, Lolo, has a keen nose for tasty, seasonal vegetables and fruit (80% locally grown). There is great Iberico ham, with both unusual and classic wines – some are offered blind to clients, if they wish. There are also two Burgundy-brewed beers, and ciders. An easy walk just off the ring-road, Route de Pommard. Tel:+33(0)380214859.  AH.

Le Jardin des Remparts

Chef Christophe Boquillon has been in charge here since January 2013, and this restaurant is worth a visit. There are locally sourced ingredients, with wines from little-known growers, as well as top names. There is also an outdoor terrace.  AH. 

Visiting Beaune market

Last but not least, the market that takes over several streets of central Beaune on Saturday mornings is something to behold, although there is a smaller one on Wednesdays.

Fantastic piles of vegetables, fruit and butter are impossible to resist, while you’ll also be able to feast on rotisserie chicken and a endless amounts of cheese and charcuterie.  AH. CM.

Anthony Hanson MW’s Beaune

I was a 19-year-old student at Grenoble University when I first heard about the  Hospices de Beaune  wine sale, the oldest charity auction in the world.

Aiming to work in the wine trade, I realised I had to get there, so I hitchhiked, including standing on the tipper of a bulldozer for part of the way round Lyon, as no other vehicle would stop for me.

Once there and tasting, a cellar worker at the Hospices took pity on me when he heard I had not booked a bed. ‘Come and stay with us,’ he said. ‘You won’t find a hotel room now.’

His wife invited me to their family lunch (eight courses) before the Sunday sale. It was my first experience of extraordinary Burgundian generosity and friendliness – never forgotten.

Beaune’s ramparts and moats still surround the little town. They have survived because they have been used to store barrels and bottles, so the great stones were never carted away for re-use.

One of my favourite walks in Beaune is along the top of the ramparts, whose walls and towers are largely from the 12th to 14th century.

You can climb the gentle slopes onto them at a dozen points around the town. Great views open up of Beaune’s old roofs, of the coloured tiles of the flamboyant Gothic Hôtel-Dieu, and of premier cru Beaune hillside vineyards, which come right up to the town’s edge.

It is best to explore Beaune in stout shoes, as many of its streets are still cobbled.

There is plentiful parking, often in the dried-out moats beside the walls. From the Porte St-Nicolas, walk down the elegant Rue de Lorraine, the best street for old buildings. Inspect the Renaissance door of No 18, with its dedication to the Muses – when I got a job in Beaune, this is where I lived.

Then turn left into Rue Rousseau-Deslandes – you will find Romanesque façades on some of these old houses. Look around the Notre Dame Collegiate Church, leading to the Palace of the Dukes of  Burgundy , where the King later stayed (now the Burgundy wine Museum).

An essential visit is to the Hospices de Beaune, dating from 1443. Sober from the outside, within its courtyard slender columns support half-timbered galleries and steep roofs with dormer windows, multicoloured tiles and many weather vanes and pinnacles. In the Hospice museum itself is the superb Flemish Last Judgement by Rogier Van der Weyden, its colours still astonishingly bright.

Beaune has the world’s best wine bookshop, the Athenaeum, with a wide wine selection. And don’t miss the Hospices de Beaune’s own shop, as you exit its museum.

Beaune is best known for the Hôtel-Dieu , a charity hospital built in 1443; its beautiful tiled roof is a symbol of the region. You might also want to visit the Musée du Vin , or Wine Museum; Fine Arts Museum ; weekly market ; and Basilica Notre-Dame . You can also tour the Fallot Mustard Works and learn about this important product.

Beaune is an excellent place to use as a base for visiting the wine regions of the Côte d'Or and taking excursions . With places such as Nuits St-Georges , Clos de Vougeot , and Gevrey-Chambertin just a short drive to the north, and Mâcon and Cluny to the south, Beaune is well situated for excursions .
