A Local’s Guide to Places to visit in Vadodara

Places to visit in Vadodara, Gujarat

Last Updated on July 22, 2022 by admin

Oh the endless and amazing places to visit in Vadodara! Vadodara is the cultural capital of Gujarat, because of its rich architecture, cultural roots and delicious food. This big little city is my hometown and I am super excited to take you on Vadodara places to visit.

Although there are amazing things to do in Ahmedabad where I currently live, my hometown Vadodara is no less of a treasure trove.

Vadodara is called the ‘ Sanskarinagari’ or the cultural capital of Gujarat thanks to its cosmopolitan nature, equal fervour to celebrate all festivals and flavourful street food.

It is very close to the Statue of Unity and has architectural marvels such as stepwells, palaces and places close to nature.

So let’s dive into the list of  visiting places in Vadodara , with this perfect  Vadodara travel guide .

Table of Contents

History of Vadodara

The city got its name due to the copious amounts of Banyan trees called ‘ Vad ’ in the local language which was present in the yesteryears. The city settled itself on the banks of the river Vishwamitri which is houses the most crocodiles in Vadodara .

The city was ruled by Gupta, Rashtrakuta, and Solanki dynasties and was held by the Sultans of Delhi and Gujarat, and then the Mughals, before finally being claimed by the Marathas of the Gaekwad dynasty in the 1720s.

The Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III (1875-1939), firmly established his dynasty and transformed Vadodara into an educational, industrial, and commercial hub with thriving art and architecture.

T hanks to this, Vadodara is a cosmopolitan city and houses people of different faiths and religions from different states of India.

Places to visit in Vadodara (Baroda)

Here is what makes Vadodara stand out amongst the other cities of Gujarat.

Lakshmi Vilas Palace Vadodara

The residence of the erstwhile ruler of Baroda – Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Lakshmi Vilas Palace speaks grandeur, affluence and is the perfect showcase of luxury. This is one of the famous places in Vadodara that is must visit.

Built-in Indo-Gothic style of architecture , the palace is spread over 700 acres and is known to be four times larger than London’s Buckingham Palace. The palace has over 170 rooms and still serves as the residence of the Gaekwad family.

The palace is a sight to behold with its multicoloured marble, mosaic tiles, water fountains, chandeliers and paintings. There are artworks that are embedded with semi-precious stones and gold and walls with stained glass which is a classic example of opulence from that era. All of this overlooking a huge golf course. The Durbar Hall is the most exquisite place in the entire palace which often hosts music concerts and cultural events. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited inside the palace.

Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum in the same premises is the museum showcasing Gaekwad family’s art and artefacts collection.

Entry fees: INR 200 which includes an audio guide in many Indian and International languages

Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery

The biggest attraction for me while visiting the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery was the skeleton of a Blue Whale across a huge hall. As a kid, I used to get amused, excited and just in awe of the size of the museum. I would simply zoom past the collection of art, sculpture, ethnography and ethnology in the museum just to see this skeleton. And it was totally worth it!

Apart from the blue whale skeleton, the museum is also popular for an Egyptian mummy .

The building itself is a heritage building which is inspired by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and is built in the Indo-Saracenic style. There are also exhibits on natural history and earth sciences.

The picture gallery contains a wide range of collections of textiles, paintings and miniatures. The museum library houses about 23,000 books on various subjects, most of which are rare. No wonder it is one of the best places to visit in Baroda .

Entry fees: INR 10

Kirti Mandir

Every local knows Kirti Mandir as the place where the annual Rangoli exhibition takes place around Diwali. Kirti Mandir is an extremely popular landmark as well as an exhibition space with lovely gardens.

Kirti Mandir as the name suggests is actually a temple. The area houses a cluster of temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and also houses the cenotaphs of the royal family.

The temple’s interiors are made of marble and decorated with intricately carved murals. One of the important murals within the premises are the five wall paintings showing various phases of the battle of Mahabharata, and some episodes from Indian mythology.

Entry fees: Free

Khanderao Market

I remember early morning trips to the old city for buying vegetables in bulk.

Khanderao Market is the most vibrant vegetable market which comes to life at the crack of dawn. Vegetables, fruits, fresh flowers, puja materials and just about everything is available here in small shops.

The entrance building itself is architecturally striking as it was gifted by the king to the people of the city on the silver jubilee of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III.

It consists of two domed shaped structures that resemble a Hindu temple with a clock tower in its centre. Part of the building also houses the office of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation.

Khanderao market timings: 05:00 am – 08:00 pm

Khanderao market- things to do in Vadodara

Aurobindo Ashram Vadodara

While writing about Vadodara places to visit, I had to mention Aurobindo Ashram.

Vadodara houses the Aurobindo Ashram which is a community centre founded by the Indian freedom fighter, philosopher and yoga guru Aurobindo Ghose. The centre is perfect for meditation and yoga just like its counterpart in Pondicherry . This ashram served as the residence of Aurobindo Ghose during his stay in Baroda (1894 – 1906). Aurobindo Ashram Vadodara has a library, study room and sales emporium.

Opening hours: 6am – 8pm

Sursagar Lake

Spending some time at Sursagar Lake is one of the best visiting places in Vadodara .

Sursagar has been one of the important landmarks of Vadodara since the beginning of time. It has been the centre of Ganesh Visarjan every year and it was at that time of the year when devotees came out in large numbers to pay their respects and bid adieu to the Elephant headed god in different sizes, shapes and colours and asking him to come early next year.

Sursagar has probably witnessed how the labyrinthine pols ( lanes) gave way to roads, ancient bazaars paved the way to shopping malls and old-styled bungalows made space for apartments, over the years in Vadodara.

Formerly known as Chandan Talav, Sursagar was a small pond in the princely state of Baroda. The lake was rebuilt in the 18th century with stone banks and masonry which is when it was renamed Sursagar.

Sursagar is still one of the iconic structures which define Vadodara especially because of the installation of the 120-foot tall statue of Lord Shiva in the middle of this lake. Ganesh Visarjan is no longer permitted but there is a walkway around the lake and boating facility where one can spend time. The lake is lit on weekend evenings and the idol is lit on special festivals.

If boating and walking make you hungry there are ample street food stalls around the lake periphery to indulge in some guilt-free snacking!

Timings: Always Open

Sayaji Baug / Kamati Baug Vadodara

Being a Banyan city, not only are there a lot of trees but maintained gardens across the city. Sayaji Baug, locally known as Kamati Baug, is one of the top sights in Vadodara and one of the most popular places to visit in Vadodara.

Spread over 100 acres, Kamati Baug is one of the biggest gardens in Western India. The garden houses, Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, Amphitheatre, an aquarium, zoo, health museum, planetarium, a toy train and a flowerbed clock.

There are supposedly 96 species of trees in the perfectly manicured garden. The garden also has a kid’s area with swings and other toys.

Entry fees: Free (for the garden),

INR 40 for adults and INR 20 for kids (for toy train)

INR 10 for adults and INR 5 for kids (for zoo)

Vadodara Planetarium

The Sardar Patel Planetarium is one of the unmissable places in Vadodara to visit .

Nestled in Vadodara’s Sayaji Baug, the planetarium has a 200-seat capacity, which displays awe-striking videos of space. It has state-of-the-art sound systems and a curved projection screen that hosts shows in English, Gujarati & Hindi focusing on astronomical history.

Entry fees: INR 10

Timings: 4.00 pm in Gujarati, 5.00 pm in English and 6.00 pm in Hindi

While there are many beautiful temples in Vadodara city, this particular temple has been a favourite among the locals.

Also known as Dakshinamurti temple, EME stands for Electrical and Mechanical Corps and is situated in the Army Cantonment campus. It is not a typical temple structure which is why it is so popular.

The temple is unique because of its geodesic design and is made from aluminium sheets.

The temple incorporates holy symbols from five major religions practised in India in its structure thus signifying secularism in the army. The Kalash on the top symbolises Hinduism, the Dome signifies Islam, the Tower represents Christianity, the Golden-structure above the tower expresses Buddhism and the Entrance stands for Jainism.

The area around the temple has lovely manicured gardens and pathways with ancient statues.

Timings: 06:30 am – 8:30 pm

Located on the outskirts of the city, towards Sindhrot lies an offbeat gem – Sevasi Vav . Other than the Navlakhi Vav in Lakshmi Vilas Palace, I did not know that step wells existed in Vadodara!

It was a rare and amazing find on one of my recent trip to Vadodara and I instantly knew this had to be added to the list of places to visit in Vadodara.

Not in the best of condition, Sevasi vav is a seven-storey stepwell with a residing deity which is why it is clean. Constructed in a combination of brick masonry it has been standing strong for 500 years. Visitors can get a glimpse of carvings on the walls and pillars such as motifs, floral prints, bells, and animals.

Places to visit in Vadodara old city

While walls of the city have disappeared, the gates which defined its boundary still remain intact and house bustling bazaars.

Mandvi gate, Gendi gate, Laheripura gate, and Pani gate reflect a blend of Islamic and Maratha architecture.

Raopura clock tower

Also known as the Maharani Chimnabai tower, the Indo-Saracenic structure was built in 1896 in memory of Maharani Chimnabai, the first wife of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The clock was brought by the Maharaja from London and installed in a five-storey building with a clock facing all four directions on the 4th floor. The clock still works and chimes every hour. Raopura tower is lit up in the evenings.

Note: Entry inside the tower is not allowed.

Very nicely written, Ketki ..! Right from my childhood, Baroda has fascinated me. My first visit was in 1968 when my eldest sister got married to one of the members connected to Gaekwads ..! My bro-in-law was a Comm. Artist himself by profession ..!! (unfortunately, lost him very recently) An Artist intrducing myself to an Artistic city was one of the landmarks/turning points in my personal life. That “The love @ first sight” later drived me to complete my PG from the World Known Universities -MSU ..! I consider myself fortunate to have spent two important years of my life in The Dream City ..I, Given a slightest oppotunity, I pay visit to this city …I don’t care of my critics who associate my Brd visits as my life partner also happens to be from Baroda ..!!

So lovely to know about your connection with Baroda. It is certainly a fascinating city for locals and tourists. Thank you for your appreciation 🙂

What a beautiful place you call home. Thanks for offering the wonderful local suggestions for things to do in Vadodara! The food looks amazing, my husband and I have been learning some family Indian recipes during the lockdown and will need to try some regional Gujarati recipes until we are able to visit. We can hopefully come during Navratri for the traditional song and dance. The Baroda Museum looks lovely with the paintings and the blue whale skeleton.

Oh, you must visit Vadodara during Navratri – it just comes alive then. Please let me know if you are planning to come and I would love to take you around the city 🙂

Vadodara Tourism Guide: Popular Tourist Attractions & Places to See

Kirti Mandir Vadodara

Vadodara (formerly Baroda) is the third largest city in Gujarat, located on the bank of Vishwamitri River, towards the south-east of Ahmedabad. Gigantic monuments, museums and gardens documenting the Indian history dominate the old quarter of Vadodara. The tinsel town is the brainchild of Sayajirao III, a farsighted ruler who introduced free primary education and laid foundation for premier institutions like Bank of Baroda, a railway system and Maharaja Sayajirao University.

Many tales and fables are associated with the name of the city. As per the history accounts, the city was christened as 'Chandravati' after its ruler Raja Chandan, later it was changed to 'Viravati 'meaning the abode of the brave, and then 'Vadpatra' due to the abundance of banyan trees here. From the term 'Vadpatra', the city got its final name - Baroda or Vadodara.

According to historians, Vadodara's history is over 2,000 years old. The first native people of Vadodara were some Hindu king, who ruled the town till 1297. People of Gupta Empire than start exploring the region and became the first ruler of Vadodara in the early year of the Christian era. After fierce battles, Vadodara was seized by Solanki dynasty. Years later, the city was vanquished by Mughals, which were later overthrown by Gaekwad ruler. Vadodara was the stage where events big and activities have unfolded.

Vadodara owes much of its splendours to the Sayajirao Gaekwad III, a formal ruler of the city. He was a great modernizer who laid the foundations of Vadodara’s modern reputation as Gujarat’s cultural capital. Today, Vadodara is known to the world as a heady mix of breathtaking art, interesting sights and vibrant street life. The Laxmi Vilas Palace, partially converted into a museum, is the finest example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. Designed by Major Charles Mant in the year 1880, the palace is the major tourist attraction of Vadodara region. Few kilometres away from the Laxmi Vilas Palace is the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, which is famed for its unique collection of painting by the famous artist Raja Ravi Verma.

Take a special time out to visit the well-manicured garden, Sayaji Baugh. Located in the heart of the city, the park houses a zoo, planetarium, and Vadodara Museu, which has an electric mix of Mughal miniatures, royal artefacts and European oil paintings. Other notable sights are Nazarbaug Palace, Makarpura Palace, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Kirti Mandir, Kirti Stambh, Nyay Mandir, Khanderao Market, Aurobindo Ashram, EME Temple (Dakshinamurty Temple) and Hazira Maqbara.

Even the outskirts of Vadodara are the subject matter of great interest for tourists. Few kilometres away from Vadodara is the ancient city of Champaner, which is also a UNESCO world heritage site. Situated at the foothills of Pavgadh, Champaner features a citadel, mosque, palaces and tombs, guarded by large gateways. The Pavgadh fort, at the crest of the 820m high Pavgadh hill, is a cluster of an ancient fortification, that reflects the chequered past of the nation. Sat Mahal is yet another famous attraction that one will notice while climbing the Pavgadh fort. This seven storey grand palace is an interesting example of Chauhan architecture. Towards the western side of Vadodara is yet another gateway called Anand, which is an ideal destination for people who want to keep aside all clamour of city life.

Reckoned as the cultural hub of Gujarat, Vadodara has all the reason on this earth to be on the travel bucket list of every tourist.

The Bum Who Travels

Vadodara : A Travel Guide For Must Visit Attractions

My assignment covering heritage in Gujarat came unannounced. I had the choice of either a car with a driver and guide (and lesser pay) or exploring in my own style (and higher pay!). Of course, I chose the latter. I arrived at Ahmedabad airport with a slight delay and immediately decided to head to Baroda (Vadodara) first and explore Ahmedabad later. I’d called a Punjabi family (who lived in Vadodara); we had met on the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek and they immediately invited me home to stay for as long as I liked.

Vadodara

The National Expressway from Ahmedabad to Vadodara was immaculate and even in a Gujarat State Transport Bus, it took only 2 hours to cover the 110 km distance to reach Vadodara. I quickly said hellos to the family, put my bags and set out to explore Vadodara. I must also say thanks to Jitin (from Pushkar, 2014) and Dhaval for showing me around Vadodara. I hope this blog post does a good job of becoming A Guide to Places to Visit in Vadodara (the erstwhile princely state of Baroda).

Vadodara

Introduction to Vadodara

Vadodara is situated on the banks of the Vishwamitri River (Still has around 200 crocodiles) and was originally known as Baroda. It is widely regarded as a cultural town and a industrial hub as well. The city has an interesting folklore and factual anecdote as to why it was named Vadodara : Vad in the local language means the Banyan tree and Vadodara was full of Banyan trees. The British apparently changed the name to Baroda to make it easier for pronunciation. It was renamed to Vadodara in 1974.

IMG_3197

Stunning architecture at Laxmi Vilas Palace.

Baroda had an underground drainage line by 1895, and was among one of the first few well planned cities of India. Maharaja Sayajirao III was the first Indian ruler to introduce compulsory and free primary education in 1906. Maharaja Pratap Singh Gaekwad of Baroda State was once considered the 8th richest man in the world.

Among other things, the biggest surprise came for me was when I was informed that the 1871 built Nazarbaug Palace had been torn down and was replaced by a shopping mall. It was a grand structure that also served as Gaekwad’s home (the ruling family of Baroda.)

Vadodara

History of Vadodara

Vadodara was the royal residence of the Gaekwads from 1721 to 1947 : The Gaekwad rule of Vadodara began in 1721 when the Marathas overthrew Mughal control over the city. Peshwa Bajirao I granted the territory as a fief to the Gaekwads. The Peshwas were the ruling leaders of the Maratha Empire.

Vadodara

The Maratha Empire declined by the beginning of the 19th Century and Baroda State was formed. The British recognised the Gaekwad rulers’ independence from the Maratha Empire in exchange of accepting British suzerainty.

A Travel Guide to Must Visit Attractions of Vadodara

Laxmi vilas palace (also lakshmi vilas palace and lukshmi vilas palace).

Laxmi Vilas Palace is an opulent home of the Rulers of Baroda which is built in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture design. It is set inside a sprawling green ground, and is replete with a golf course with colourful birds strutting around. It was commissioned by Maharaja Sayaji Rao III in 1878 as his residence, and took 12 years to build and was completed in 1890. The architect in charge of designing it was Major Charles Mant.

Vadodara

Entry fee is a steep 225 Rupees and DSLR photography is not allowed at all.

Some interesting features of Laxmi Vilas Palace :

  • Lukshmi Villas Palace is four times the size of Buckingham Palace.
  • Maharaja Sayaji Rao III named it after his third wife, Rani Laxmibai from Tanjore
  • It was built with elevators 130 years ago, a big feat at that time.
  • Built at a cost of 180,000 GBP (Pounds).
  • It has 170 rooms but was originally built for only 2 people : Laxmi Vilas Palace served as the private residence of the royal couple; Sayajirao Gaekwad III and his wife.
  • Amalgamation of designs of different religions : Mughal style Islamic domes, Church-like tower, Hindu and Jain motifs, and Gothic architectural elements are present in different parts of the exterior in Laxmi Vilas Palace (As explained by the staff in the Laxmi Vilas Palace Museum office.)
  •  A miniature railway line was constructed by the Maharaja to commute his children between the palace and the school, which was housed in the Fatehsingh Museum.

Vadodara

Inside Laxmi Vilas Palace

Only a few sections of Laxmi Vilas Palace are open for visitors. Namely, 11 exhibits can be seen and with the audio guide make for an interesting tour (Audio guide is included in the 225 Rupee charge). Among the highlights to be noticed in the interiors is the enormous Durbar Hall with Venetian mosaic floor and stained Belgian glass windows. It was decorated when I visited, in celebrations for Ganesh Chaturthi. In the exhibits, do not miss the an armoury collection including Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s sword, and six stunning masterpiece paintings by Raja Ravi Varma.

Vadodara

Outdoor photography with phone is allowed; i.e. you can click pictures of the exterior of Laxmi Vilas Palace with your phones but can’t click with dslr cameras. According to the staff, the present Raja has started this rule and began charging INR 15000 for 1 hour of dslr photography of the exterior. I really liked the small shop at the Laxmi Vilas Palace; the office lady there told me that the designs on the cloth, shawls, stoles and bags are personally chosen by the present queen. The prices of the same were quite exorbitant though and I couldn’t bother to buy anything. The lady also informed me that the entire staff is maratha and that the king prefers it that way.

Vadodara

There is also a small café in the Palace premises and I’d highly recommend some chai and snacks here for the regal feel. The office staff handing out audio guides has served in the Palace for over 20 years and a chat with them will tell you a few secrets of Laxmi Vilas Palace! My favourite time at Laxmi Vilas Palace was simply sitting in the gardens overlooking the golf course (a game was in progress) and gazing at the extremely beautiful Palace. The staff also mentioned that the present ruler wants to convert Laxmi Vilas Palace into a heritage hotel and that talks are currently ongoing for the same.

Vadodara

Laxmi Vilas Palace clicked from different sides and angles!

Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum

The Maharaja Fateh Singh Musem is Gaekwad family’s private art and artefacts collection. Among the dazzling collection is a range of Japanese, Indian, Chinese and European art collected by the Maharajas. It is located very close to Laxmi Vilas Palace and should be combined with a trip to the Palace itself.

Vadodara

Entry fee is Rupees 200 and photography is strictly not allowed inside Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum. There’s a spectacular gallery with poignant Gaekwad family portraits made by Raja Ravi Varma. Among other interesting things is a huge turban collection, the world’s smallest locomotive engine (from Baroda railway), and an exquisite collection of prints that look like oil paintings. Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum was originally constructed to function as a school for the Maharaja’s children.

Vadodara

Maharaja Sayajirao University (M S University)

Also known as M S University, the Maharaja Sayajirao University is a highly respected and reputed institute of learning. The M S University is huge and has great heritage value as construction was started in 1879. It was known as Baroda College back then. Baroda College was converted into Maharaja Sayajirao University in 1949, after India’s independence.

Vadodara

Among the salient features of the M S University – The Art Faculty’s Dome is the second largest dome in entire India (The largest is Gol Gumbaz, Bijapur). M S University is most well known for its Archaeological department and the Faculty of Fine Arts. It caters to over 1 lakh students. I was lucky to explore the University with Dhaval who had studied at M S University itself; we walked inside some old corridors and had a great time exploring the old architecture. Highly recommend a stroll in the University campus at your own pace, surely one of the greatest universities in India.

Vadodara

Vadodara Museum (Baroda Museum & Picture Gallery)

Possibly, the biggest collection that I’ve ever seen at a museum. The charming red building of the Baroda Museum & Picture Gallery was constructed in the Indo-Saracenic style in 1894. It lies inside Sayaji Bagh (Sayaji Gardens) and for a visitor not expecting it; may come across as a Church or a Cathedral at the first glance. The entry fees is only 10 Rupees and huge crowds throng the place clicking selfies outside the Baroda Museum building.

Vadodara

I was taken aback when I saw that statues in display in the garden were older than 1000 years and they had been left in the open. There was no glass casing etc and just a small shade on top to protect the statue in the rain. In the few minutes I spent in the garden, I saw kids and elders alike touch the statues. If the authorities are reading this; please make necessary arrangements – the setting for these priceless statues needs to be changed.

Vadodara

Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery is said to have been designed along the lines of the Victoria & Albert Museum in Great Britain. The Museum has artefacts from all over the world, which was once-upon-a-time Maharaja Sayajirao’s personal collection. The galleries have a rich collection of art and textiles from across the world. There is a separate exhibit for archeological finds from different parts of Gujarat and also Mughal miniatures.

Vadodara

Excellent collection in this huge museum ranging from sculptures and artefacts from Japan, Tibet, Nepal, China and Egypt. There’s also a fantastic collection of rocks in the museum. Another fascinating exhibit is of Indian musical instruments and traditional dresses. The piece de resistance of Vadodara Museum is the skeleton of a blue whale that was found washed up at the mouth of the Mahi river in 1972. The skeleton is never-ending; and at 22m is actually so! I was also aware of an Egyptian Mummy in Baroda Museum but am not sure if it still exists.

Vadodara

I am a firm believer that Museums are a great place to learn more about the history, heritage, culture, arts and crafts and if you do too; then keep aside a comfortable 3 hours to explore the Baroda Museum & Picture Gallery. Photography is not allowed inside the museum.

Vadodara

Kirti Mandir

Kirti Mandir is the mausoleum of Vadodara’s rulers, and was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad in 1936. At the time of building, it cost approx. 5 Lakh Rupees in construction. The buildings are constructed in perfect symmetry and look very imposing. Alas, it was a Sunday and Kirti Mandir was closed for a visit.

Vadodara

We were lucky to admire its exterior beauty. I had been recommended this place by Mr. Zaveri (my Facebook friend and author of 7 books on wall paintings). The insides of Kirti Mandir are painted with colourful murals and scenes from Mahabharata and Bhagvad Gita. They were painted by Nandlal Bose, a renowned modern artist whose work was declared a ‘national treasure’.

Sayaji Bagh also called Sayaji Garden

Sayaji Bagh is an enormous green park in the heart of Vadodara city. It is spread over an area of over 100 acres and is home to more than 90 varieties of trees. Other museums are inside the garden itself; the planetarium, zoo and a vintage looking toy train are also there in Sayaji Bagh. It is Baroda’s favourite place for going out on a sunday, especially for the middle class with kids. The toy train is a huge draw!

Vadodara

The planetarium in a corner of the Garden complex has a show in English at 5 pm and Hindi at 6 pm. There’s also a zoo in Sayaji Bagh; I saw a few spotted deers and crocodiles while strolling towards the exit gate.

Vadodara

Sayaji Bagh Garden is the oldest and the largest among all the gardens in Vadodara city. Parking space is a problem when entering Sayaji Bagh because I remember there was nowhere to park the bike outside, and all the spaces were bursting. Best to come on a weekday and combine it with a visit to the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery.

Vadodara

Tambekar Wada

Honestly, I’d not heard about Tambekar Wada before setting foot in Vadodara. It was a random name I had noted down which became a must visit after my meeting with Mr. Pradip Zaveri. It is a typical Maratha Mansion which was the mansion of Bhau Tambekar (Vitthal Khanderao) who was the Diwan of Baroda from 1849 to 1854. It was Sunday and I was skeptical whether Tambekar Wada would be open for a visit or not. It was a moment of good luck when the lady in-charge agreed to let me in because I had come faraway from Rajasthan!

Vadodara

Lying in an obscure-looking lane are some of India’s most beautiful murals made in the 19th century. Tambekar Wada is under Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). As we took the stairs to get to the first floor, we noticed that every inch of the mansion’s walls, doors, and ceilings were covered with frescoes and murals. The murals range from Indian mythology to everyday life and historical events.

Check :  The Havelis of Shekhawati

Vadodara

Walls depict paintings showcasing scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata; and scenes of local and European life can also be noticed. The ceiling of the bigger hall is ornate and the side walls are all covered in colourful paintings; albeit in a damaged state. It is an identical scenario as we ascend to the first floor – Similar room layout and paintings. The stand out feature are the doors in the square rooms on both the floors; the doors are adorned with beautiful murals in a unique style. Please check the pictures for reference.

Vadodara

Tomb of Qutub-ud-din Muhammad Khan

Special thanks to Dhaval for showing me this monument. Since I had only associated Baroda as a city with a predominantly Hindu heritage; the mausoleum came as a big surprise. It is also known as Hazira Maqbara and contains the graves of Qutub-ud-din Muhammad Khan (Prince Salim’s (Jahangir’s) tutor) and his son Naurang Khan. Naurang Khan held important positions in Gujarat during the reign of Emperor Akbar.

Vadodara

The structure was situated in a lovely garden lined with tall palm trees. Inside the mausoleum, the jaali work was intricate and beautiful calligraphy was written on the walls. The exterior dome of the mausoleum was huge and the Tomb looked like a peaceful place. As we took a walk around the main domed structure, I noticed a number of tombs near the garden.

Vadodara

According to a ASI signboard : Qutub-ud-din Muhammad Khan was the uncle of Mirza Aziz Koka, who was the foster brother of Akbar and was Governor of Gujarat thrice between 1573 & 1583.

Railway Heritage Park (Pratap Nagar Railway Station)

Opposite to Pratap Nagar Railway Station is Goya Gate where the Railway Heritage Park is located. Pratapnagar station was earlier known as Goya Gate.

Vadodara

The garden is a nice place to relax and walk around the Railway Heritage Park. There is a model narrow gauge station at its centre, complete with tracks, signals, lamp-posts and even a couple of carriages. It was set up the railway division to commemorate completion of 150 years of arrival of the railways at Vadodara. The written history takes a visitor through the timeline from 1853 – the birth of Indian railways, arrival of train in Baroda in 1861 and opening of Vadodara railway division in 1956.

Vadodara

Dhundiraj Ganpati Temple

Supposed to be the oldest temple in Vadodara, temple of Dhundiraj Ganesh was quite difficult to find. It was situated in the Wadi area of the city and looked like a Rajasthani Haveli from the outside. The wooden columns and panels in the inside of the temple were very pretty. What I was really interested were the paintings in the temple but the door was locked. Upon asking around, someone directed us to the home of the family that owned the temple.

Vadodara

We spoke to Mr. Manral; he explained that the family trust owned the temple and that we would need to submit a written request if we wanted to see the paintings inside. Then the trust members would take a decision. I thanked him for the information, but we couldn’t actually see much at the temple. Dhundiraj Ganpati Temple is more than 170 years old and the entire building is made of wood, as informed by Mr. Mairal.

Vadodara

Sri Aurobindo Niwas

While going from the new city to the old city (Wadi area) in Vadodara, Dhaval’s eyes spotted the red structure of Aurobindo Niwas. Sadly, entry to the house was closed due to it being Sunday. Most readers would be able to identity Sri Aurobindo by the Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry . Aurobindo Ghose was a freedom fighter and also a philosopher. Aurobindo Niwas feels like a very spiritual and calm place. There’s a library in the premises and also a dedicated space for meditation.

Vadodara

According to a local’s account – Aurobindo Ghose stayed for 13 years in Vadodara; he was a Private Secretary to Maharaja Sayajirao and Professor of English in Baroda Collage.

Eating in Baroda

Baroda has a unique taste in food mostly because of the amalgamation of the Maratha rule and the local Gujarati population. Missal Pav and Sev Usal at Mahalaxmi is famous and Tam Tam at Shriram TamTamwala. For taking back home, Jagdish Farsan Shop has a ‘Lila Chevda’ made from papaya.

Vadodara

2-3 days are ideal for exploring Vadodara and take in the sights. I went around on my own and was really lucky to have locals show me around Vadodara. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s (VMC) Vadodara Darshan Bus is a recommended way to explore Vadodara in a comfortable manner. The bus has a fixed route and takes the tourists to 6 points of interest which cover the major attractions. The charges are also very reasonable at 100 Rupees.

Vadodara

If you can manage an entry; The Maharaja Pratapsinh Coronation Gymkhana, popularly known as the Polo Club of Baroda is a must visit. I am blessed with a Club Card of an esteemed club in Jaipur and hence had the privilege of visiting Polo Club in Vadodara!

Vadodara

Apart from the places mentioned above; other important and popular sights in Vadodara are : Iskcon Temple, EME Temple (Also called Dakshina Murty Temple) and Sursagar Lake with a huge statue of Shiva in the middle. Central Library is another must visit in Vadodara (there’s apparently a glass floor to walk on!).

Vadodara

Swami Vivekananda Memorial is another place one can visit. Vadodara has night vegetable markets and there’s also a food market which is open till 4-5 in the morning! What a surprise!! Also worth a quick visit are Nyaya Mandir; a fine Indo-Saracenic building, now used as a Court of Law. Maharaja Khanderao Market Building is a must see for the elaborate entrance and the properly laid out vegetable market that is fully functional even today.

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Laxmi Vilas Palace, which is an architectural masterpiece. The intricate designs, grandeur, and the sprawling gardens left me in awe. It’s no wonder this palace is often compared to some of the grandest palaces in the world.

Vadodara travel guide

Vadodara tourism | vadodara guide, you're going to love vadodara.

Vadodara is one of Gujarat's most appealing cities, with fine food, elegant palaces, and bustling bazaars. But what elevates it above other destinations is the ruined medieval city of Champaner, a short drive away and one of India's most fascinating historical attractions.

vadodara tourism services

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Vadodara

1. champaner and pavagadh.

Part of a single medieval complex around 30 miles from Vadodara, Champaner and Pavagadh was the stronghold of the Chavda Dynasty in the 15th century. The Chavdas have gone, but the incredible architecture remains.

2. The Laxmi Vilas Palace

Back in Vadodara itself, this 19th-century royal palace is achingly luxurious, with its mosaics, art, and ornate architecture. It's the city's must-see historical attraction.

3. Plenty of Family-Friendly Fun

Vadodara has an excellent zoo (set in the sprawling Sayaji Baug gardens), while there are also great attractions for kids, like S-Cube Water Park, to enjoy.

4. The Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery

Also set in the Sayaji Baug gardens, the city museum is a huge place, boasting Chinese and Indian paintings, ivory carvings, and intricate miniature artworks from the Mughal period.

5. The Food Is Superb

Gujarati food includes massive thalis, biryanis, and a host of vegetarian delights, and Vadodara restaurants like Peshawri are the place to try them.

What to do in Vadodara

1. a palace fit for any royal dynasty.

For centuries, Vadodara (or Baroda) was the seat of the Gujarati royal family, and architectural reminders of its glorious past remain all over town, and none are more splendid than Laxmi Vilas Palace. Built in the 1890s as a fitting home for the royal family, it was created in a style known as "Indo-Saracenic" (a fusion of Mughal, traditional Indian, and British influences), and few corners were cut. It's an impressive sight, with opulent interiors, chandeliers, waterfall fountains, and much more to discover as you explore.

2. A Humble House With Miraculous Murals

A brilliant counterpoint to the magnificence of Laxmi Vilas, Tambekar Wada is just as special in its way. Located in the Dandia Bazaar area of Vadodara, this townhouse dates back to the 1840s, and was built in a multi-storied style for one of the city's leading merchants. Be sure to enter the mansion to uncover the treasures within, including murals showing episodes from the Mahabharata and 18th and 19th century regional history, as well as some charming scenes from everyday life. It's a great fusion of historical education and pure artistic beauty.

3. Gujarat's Most Gorgeous Garden

Vadodara's premier park, Sajayi Baug can be found to the north-west of the city center, and finding it is definitely recommended. Laid out in the 1870s, the park is really more of a pleasure garden, offering much more than beautiful green space for visitors. For instance, it's home to the city's main zoo, where you can meet tigers, hippos, and exotic Indian birds. There's a planetarium with daily shows, a toy train that kids can ride around the grounds, and the chance to get away from the traffic of the city center.

4. Great Art, From Turner To Tibet

Also within the grounds of Sajayi Baug, visitors will find this excellent museum, which is almost certainly the finest in town. Created by the local Gaekwad royal family in the 1890s, Vadodara's Museum is another Indo-Saracenic masterpiece. And there are some notable masterworks inside, too, including originals by British painters like Constable and Turner, Indian bronze sculptures from 500 AD, exquisite miniatures from the Mughal era, and an assortment of Tibetan and European works that the royals accumulated over the years. It's the kind of place where a breath-taking sight is just around the corner.

5. Heaven For Ancient History Fans

It's not actually in Vadodara itself, but Champaner is well worth visiting if you get the chance. This gorgeous historic town is around 30 miles northeast of Vadodara, so it's easily accessible by road. Founded by the Chavda Dynasty in the 8th century, Champaner is one of India's most important archaeological locations, including the extensive fortifications of this ancient Hindu capital, and the soaring bulk of Pavagadh, a 750 meter tall volcanic hill. If you love history, it's a wonderland.

Top 10 Tourist Places to Visit in Vadodara

Top 10 Tourist Places to Visit in Vadodara

The second-largest city in Gujarat, Vadodara, is an industrial, educational and cultural hub. Nestled on the banks of the Vishwamitri River, this beautiful city is just 141 kilometres from Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat. Also known as the “The City of Art” and the “Cultural City”, Vadodara is home to one of the most lavish structures in India- the Lakshmi Vilas Palace and the Maharaja Sayajirao University, one of the prominent universities in India. The city has been ruled by the royal Gaekwad dynasty, Mughal empire, Pathans, and Marathas in the past. The monuments and heritage buildings here reflect a glimpse of the royal past. Whether you are a traveller interested in history or an artist looking for art and architecture, the city has many attractions to impress you, including palaces, temples, monuments, gardens, and museums. If you are planning a trip to this historical city and not sure what to visit, here we help you with the list of the best places to visit in Vadodara.

1. Laxmi Vilas Palace

Laxmi Vilas Palace

One of the most magnificent structures in India, Laxmi Vilas Palace, displays a unique combination of luxury and affluence. Built in 1890, the palace was the private residence of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Designed in Indo-Saracenic style, the palace reflects a mix of Hindu, Neo-Mughal, Mughal-Gothic, and Indo-Gothic architectural forms, having use of archesand domes. One of the famous places in Vadodara, Laxmi Vilas Palace, houses various buildings, including Makarpura Palace, Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum building, Moti Baug Palace, and Pratap Vilas Palace. Visiting this royal structure is a must to experience the regal vibe this city is famous for.

2. Sur Sagar Lake

Situated in the middle of the city, Sur Sagar Lake was originally a small pond built by Shri Sureshwar Desai, so it was named after him as Sur Sagar. Also called Chandan Talav, this 18th-century lake has many underground gates to manage water in case it overflows. One of the best places to visit in Baroda, Sur Sagar Lake, is noted for the 120-feet tall statue of Lord Shiva positioned in the middle of the lake. The cool ambience and serene beauty of this lake make it a perfect place for locals to sit and relax. Visit the lake during weekends when light shows illuminate the water, making the lake surrounding look more mesmerising.

3. Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park is one of the best places to visit in Gujarat . Situated 47 kilometres from the city of Vadodara, this historical site comprises many splendid architectural wonders. Including both Hindu and Islamic styles. The Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park was founded by Vanraj Chavda during the Chavda Reign in the 8th century, who named the park after his friend and general Champa. It is believed that the hill of Pavagadh is a part of the Himalayas that was carried by Lord Hanuman as medicine for Lakshman in the Ramayana epic.

4. Sayaji Garden

One of the best tourist places in Baroda, Sayaji Garden, is also known as Kamati Baug or Sayaji Baug. Located on the banks of the Vishwamitri River, this beautiful garden was built by Maharaja Sayajirao III in 1879. At present, the park is home to a number of tourist attractions, including a zoo, aquarium, Museum and Picture Gallery, planetarium, and more. Also, the park is famous for its flowerbed clock and the Sayaji Toy Train - designed to provide children with a tour of the entire park. With so many attractions, Sayaji Garden makes one of the unique places to visit in Baroda.

5. Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery

Located at Sayaji Baug, Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad in 1887 for the education of diverse subjects and consisted of artefacts selected by the King himself. One of the major Vadodara attractions, Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, is a blend of Maratha and European architectural designs. The collection of this museum includes disciplines of Geology, Geography, Palaeontology, Osteology, Anthropology, and more. In addition, the art gallery of this museum contains artworks from Portuguese, British, Dutch, Spanish, and Italian schools, among others. One of the attractions of Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery is a huge skeleton of a blue whale and an Egyptian mummy.

6. Kirti Mandir

One of the magnificent monuments in Vadodara, Kirti Mandir, is actually a group of temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in 1936 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Kirti Mandir features stunning terraces, domes, tombs, balconies, and a magnificently designed 35 meters high central sikhara. The shikhara represents the earth, moon, and sun, along with a map of undivided India. While the interiors are radiantly adorned with intricately carved murals, the walls of the temple have many striking murals, such as Life of Meera, Natir Poojan, and the battle of Mahabharata. If you are planning a Gujarat tour , make sure you visit this impressive monument for sure.

7. Nyay Mandir

Nyay Mandir

Another place of attraction on the list, the Nyay Mandir or the Temple of Justice is a perfect example of Byzantine architecture. It was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, in the memory of his wife and queen Chimnabai. This spectacular monument comprises a central hall with a statue of Chimnabai, which is a major attraction of the building. Sprawling across an area of 6000 square metres, Nyay Mandir attracts history buffs and photography enthusiasts with its architectural splendour.

8. Ajwa Nimeta Garden

One of the best places to visit in Vadodara, Ajwa Nimeta Garden, is an ideal destination to spend your leisurely weekends. Spread across 130 acres of land, this beautiful garden is decked with green manicured lawns, palm trees, and a variety of flowers. The major attraction of Ajwa Nimeta Garden is the 100-meter row of a perfectly aligned musical fountain, mesmerising visitors with synchronized water show in the background of lively colours. When in Vadodara, do not forget to visit this beautiful garden.

9. Baps Sri Swaminarayan Mandir

Situated in the Atladara region of Vadodara, Baps Sri Swaminarayan Mandir is one of the most famous places in Vadodara. With awe-inspiring architecture, an elegant interior, and a tranquil vibe, this temple is a perfect place to find inner peace. The intricate carvings on the walls of the temple showcase many religious figures, including Lord Krishna, and Lord Shiva. However, the main idols worshipped in the temple are the Swaminarayan and Gunaititanad Swami. It is the centre of many spiritual and cultural activities, attracting visitors across India.

10. Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated around 70 km from Vadodara, the Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the major attractions near the city. The sanctuary was established in 1989, but it received the status of a wildlife sanctuary in 1990. At present, this wildlife sanctuary is home to more than 17 species of animals, including the giant squirrel, the Indian flying fox, the rusty-spotted cat, and sloth bears, among others. One of the best national parks of Gujarat , the Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary is a heaven for nature and wildlife lovers.

Vadodara: A City for Kings

Not sure if it is Vadodara or Baroda? Well, there is an easy explanation. Baroda is the anglicised name for Vadodara. Interestingly, the city gets its name from the Sanskrit word, “vatodor”, which means “in the heart of the Banyan trees”.

The city rose to international fame, when the Moon of Baroda hit the global market. Your eyes would glisten at the sight of the 24.04-carat pear-shaped, yellow diamond. This precious stone would rest proudly around the necklines of royalty including the Queen of Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe.

Highlights: A Place of Palaces

The royal life.

One of the iconic structures that defines the city is the Lakshmi Vilas Palace. It captures the essence of Vadodara’s royalty.

Built in 1890, the palace is the original design of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III and Major Charles Mant, the architect. It was built in the Indo-Saracenic style and is four times the size of Buckingham Palace.

Besides the stunning architectural ornaments, the palace was ahead of its times. One of its iconic amenities was the installation of the elevators.

The palace’s Darbar Hall, till today, holds music and cultural events on rare occasions. The chandeliers suspended from the intricately decorated ceiling illuminate the details on the mosaic walls and Venetian-style floor. The Belgium-stained glass windows are also the pride of this hall. The royal family still resides at the palace, as well as in the hearts of the locals.

In the vicinity are other palaces that you must visit, which will transport you to the golden days of the Maratha Gaekwad rule.

Makarpura Palace , another symbol of Maratha Gaekwad’s legacy. It was constructed in an Italian style and resembled a European manor. Today, this palace is a training school for the Indian Air Force.

Motibaug Palace , a small villa that served as a guesthouse for architects who built the Lakshmi Vilas Palace. It was these phenomenal minds that are inspiring architects, today.

Indumati Palace , the best place to acquaint yourself with the history of the Gaekwad family. It holds rare pictures of the royal family and important historical books.

A piece of history

Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum was once a school for the royals. Today, it is a place to appreciate the remarkable art collection of the royals. Works of Indian and European artists stand alongside portraits of the royal family. You don’t need to be a connoisseur of art to be wowed by the depth of artistry.

The museum displays art works of prominent European Renaissance artists such as Raphael, Titian, Murillo and Rembrandt. And the portraits are by the renowned 19th century portraitist, Raja Ravi Verma. His intensity of colour and subjects’ expressions evoke vivid storytelling.

The treasures do not end here. The marble and bronze sculptures, Chinese and Japanese porcelain items, and other priceless artefacts are equally beckoning.

An ecosystem of entertainment

Sayaji Baug tops the traveller’s list. Not only does it boast the world’s biggest floral clock,  in its premises are also located the Baroda Museum & Picture Gallery, the Sardar Patel Planetarium, and the Sayaji Baug Zoo. The forward-thinking Maharaja Sayajirao III built it in 1879, so do explore it at leisure to make the most of the experience.

Calming Experience

Do what most locals do in the evening, visit the Sursagar Lake. Enjoy a quiet boat ride or on cooler days, stroll around it. If you wait back on a full moon night, the lake sparkles like tiny diamonds.

Did you know, back in the 18th century, the lake was renovated with stonework. Interestingly, the lake has underground passages. These come in handy when the lake overflows in the monsoons, as the excess water is diverted to the River Vishwamitri.

Interesting facts

  • Vadodara has the oldest and largest Vocal Music Department in India, MSU’s Faculty of Performing Arts.
  • The first statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the world was owned by the Gaekwad family. It was revealed to the public on 8th March 1934 at Sayajibaug.
  • With the change in dynasties, the city was renamed several times. Before it was called Vadodara, it was known as Chandanvati, Ankottaka, Vatpatrak, Viravati, Virakshetra, and Brodera.
  • To all the cricket fanatics, Vadodara is home to the oldest cricket ground in Asia - the Moti Baug.
  • G olf is a rich man’s sport. Hence, it is befitting that the Gaekwad Baroda Golf Club is surrounded by a Palace - the Laxmi Villas Palace Estate.
  • Major Charles Mant, the architect of Laxmi Vilas Palace committed suicide before the project was complete in the fear that he had his calculations wrong and that the palace would fall down.

Location: River-centric city

The city of Vadodara sprung from a small settlement on the banks of the River Vishwamitri, which was once the abode of majestic banyan trees. Today, it is the state’s third largest city, rejuvenated by several rivers. Besides, Vishwamitri, which splits the city into western and eastern regions, the other rivers are Mahi, Jambuva, Narmada , and Dhadhar. These rivers fertilise the area, making it conducive for farming. Till today, agriculture is a prominent occupation in the district.

Best time to visit: Winters, of course

On arrival, you may be greeted by a burst of Vadodara’s dry weather. The crisp air may make your skin feel flaky. This is the weather most months of the year, but it is something a moisturiser can fix. The city has three seasons – summer, monsoon, and winter.

In summer, it feels like a furnace. From March to May, the dry, hot breeze hits you, forcing you indoors. It is a good decision because the temperature soars to 40 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon season soon follows from June till September. The average rainfall is 37 inches. But there are moments when the city struggles with heavy downpours. This is when the rivers overflow onto the banks. The rains are typically accompanied by humidity. So, it is not the best time to drop by.

From November, the city cools down to 15 degrees Celsius. This pleasant and enjoyable weather lasts till February, making it the ideal months to visit Vadodara and explore its extensive history and impressive sights.

How to get to Vadodara: Easy Access

By Road :  Vadodara is easily accessible from the neighbouring states of Maharashtra , Rajasthan , and Madhya Pradesh . If you prefer to drive down to the city, make your way to National Highway 8. For a carefree journey, book a seat on one of the many government run or privately-owned buses.

By Rail :  The Indian Railways are well connected and offer economical fares. If it is your favourite transport, then grab a seat, and alight at Vadodara Junction railway station. This is the main station that serves trains from Mumbai , Delhi and Ahmedabad .

By Air :  Hop on a flight for the quickest way to reach the city. Vadodara Airport serves domestic flights that arrive from various major cities as well as from cities in Gujarat .

History: From empires to education

From the time the first inhabitants made the river bank their home in 1000 B.C, the city has grown exponentially.

Vadodara’s history is full of conquests, achievements, and developments. The influential rulers that coloured the city’s heritage are the Chalukya Dynasty, Gupta Empire, Solanki Rajputs, Sultans of Delhi, and Maratha Gaekwads.

However, the last powerful sovereign, the Maratha Gaekwads truly upgraded the city. The Golden Period of their reign was from 1875 onwards. This is when the ruler, Maharaja Sayajirao III completely changed the face of Vadodara.

He envisioned the city to be an educational, commercial, and industrial centre. He was responsible for making primary education compulsory, built a university for further studies, and established a library.

Sayajirao also sowed the first seeds of industrialisation with the promotion and production of textile and tiles.

To showcase his massive and invaluable art collection and artefacts, he set up a museum, which is truly outstanding and worth visiting.

With these accomplishments in tow, the citizens would also call Vadodara, Sayaji Nagari or Sayaji's City. Unfortunately, the Gaekwads’ reign ended with the Indian Independence.

Kenya’s Economy Exhibited Robust Growth in 2023 Despite Persistent Challenges

Nairobi, June 5, 2024  — Kenya’s real GDP growth accelerated to 5.6% in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s growth of 4.9%. However, GDP growth in 2024 is expected to slow down to 5.0%. This is according to the latest Kenya Economic Update (KEU) launched today, which adds that the 2023 growth was driven by the recovery of the agriculture sector, following improved weather conditions, and the services sector, with tourism and financial services contributing the most.

According to the 29 th edition of the Kenya Economic Update: Fostering Trade for Robust Growth and Dynamic Job Creation, tight fiscal and monetary policies, elevated inflation, rising debt service obligations, high borrowing costs that constrained access to global capital markets, and the sharp depreciation of the shilling, framed Kenya’s macroeconomic performance in 2023. Despite this challenging environment, Kenya's economic growth demonstrated resilience and accelerated, driven by the government’s strategic policy measures that have bolstered overall macroeconomic stability.

“ In a decisive move to stabilize the macroeconomic environment, the Government of Kenya successfully conducted a partial buyback of the Eurobond in February 2024, a move that significantly eased the immediate liquidity constraints for the year, instilling a sense of calm in the markets ,” said Keith Hansen, World Bank Country Director for Kenya. “ The improved macroeconomic conditions, and re-access to international financial markets, are anticipated to boost investor confidence and private investment.”

The KEU projects a GDP growth of 5.2% on average during 2024-26, underpinned by favorable weather conditions for the agricultural sector, a recovery of industry, and the resilience of services. The outlook assumes adequate rainfall, government staying on the fiscal consolidation path, and the continuous implementation of the government’s structural reform agenda. The report projects that the private sector will play a stronger role in Kenya’s medium-term recovery.

Kenya’s efforts in trade integration could significantly contribute to substantial economic growth and job creation, notes the KEU whose special focus is on the role of trade integration in promoting economic growth and job creation. Trade patterns shows that agriculture is the largest contributor to Kenya’s exports, followed by minerals and chemicals. Kenya’s exports, however, have significantly underperformed. Also, the country has not diversified its products in the past few years and has lost competitiveness in the markets to which is has been exporting.

The report notes that Kenya is proactively utilizing all channels on the global, continental, and regional level to enhance its role in the global economy and increase regional and international trade integration. Its aspirations extend beyond export growth, aiming to convert this growth into job opportunities.

“Even though the export-to-GDP ratio has been declining, the potential for export expansion remains significant,” said Naomi Mathenge, World Bank Senior Economist for Kenya. “ Targeted policy considerations are crucial to fully capitalize on economic growth and robust job creation from trade integration.”

Some of these policy considerations include revising trade and investment policies to foster export orientation, cementing policy coherence and predictability, strengthening institutions, enhancing strategic skills development, multifaceted support to export orientation and, drawing in more Foreign Direct Investment as a lever for optimizing the role of trade integration. The country will need to also mitigate trade and climate related vulnerabilities, especially for agricultural exports.
