Trek BB90/95

trek bb90 bearings

« Back

The BB90/95 standard is used by Trek on many frames. Two sealed bearings (37mm OD) are pressed directly in to the frame's bottom bracket shell. A step is molded in to the frame for the bearings to seat against. Trek BB90/95 frames do not use bearing retainer clips. Compatible with 24mm or 24/22mm spindle cranks only.

Wheels Mfg does not make a cup & bearing system for BB90/95 frames. Your only option is to replace your existing bearings when necessary.

Hambini Trek BB90 Bearing Kit Shimano Crankset

£ 173.00 Ex. VAT

This bearing kit is for use on bicycles that use the BB90 standard – typically these are Trek. It consists of 2 bearings at the top end of the size range and a pair of top hats to interface a Shimano Crankset.

Description

Additional information.

  • Reviews (53)
  • Q & A (9)

This bearing kit is for use on bicycles that use the BB90 standard – typically these are Trek.

  • 6805 (61805) bearings at the top end of the size range, these do not come boxed and are individually measured for size. The bearings will either be SKF, NTN, FAG, NSK or KOYO.
  • 2 x machined Delrin “top hats”, this interfaces the 25mm of the bearing ID to the 24mm crank axle diameter of Shimano crankset
  • Installation of this kit must be in conjunction with Activator and retaining compound
  • Please see fitting instructions here

  • This kit cannot guarantee to rid your bike of creak/clicking. There is a limit on the amount of slack the system will tolerate and if your frame is beyond this limit, then it will not work! I can give you an indication if measurements are provided.
  • The success rate is 94% when the user has NOT measured their bottom bracket hole size.

M837 – April 8, 2019

This really does work. My Madone has gone from a creaking nightmare to silent bliss.

Aldo Santini – May 27, 2019

I will be the first to admit that I was skeptical about this solution but having tried everything else and not wanting to go for the absurdly oversized bearings I thought I would give this a punt. Fortunately, it worked. I am now happily riding around with no creak. It is expensive and Trek should have fixed it from the get go.

Baz Symonds – June 29, 2019

I was encouraged by the other reviews on here and Hambini’s excellent youtube channel and thought I would give this a go. It was amazing that such a small difference in size was the difference between having a bike that creaked so much it was destined for the rubbish tip to having creak free bliss. Yes, it is expensive but it’s a lot cheaper than a scrapped bike frame. The bearings I received were SKF. I used Loctite activator and retaining compound as recommended by Hambini. I could not be happier

Mbop – July 21, 2019

8… yes 8 trips to the LBS and the Trek main dealer could not fix the problem. They even tried oversized bearings and the drag was horrendous. I got in touch with Hambini after one of my work mates recommended him. Customer service and instructions were spot on. I didn’t rush it and did the install myself. I could not believe it where a 130km ride was completely creak free. The bike has not creaked since. Can’t thank Hambini enough. A thorough gent, straight talking no BS and more importantly will explain to you the limitations. Why can’t they all be like this.

Ognen – August 28, 2019

Having the bad feeling of getting such creaking problems in the future, and knowing the problems related to the BB90 standard, I followed and installed the bearings with the tophats/delrins bought from Hambini using the Loctite activator and retaining compound. No problems, no creaks and the bearings are still in very good condition after 4500km. Sure, it may be a bit expensive but you also buy the knowledge and expertise of Hambini, something we all can be very thankful of. I would not like to waste time, money, efforts on temporary solutions or trips to a LBS. Finally, I’m pretty sure he backs up his engineering and he would be there for us by any eventual problems with his support or solutions…

James Tendi – September 16, 2019

I was not sure this would actually work and thought I would give it a go before binning the frame. I followed the instructions religiously and BOOM no more creak. You can buy the spacers a lot cheaper than Hambini sells them for but his are machined. Whether this makes a difference or not, I don’t know but £106 for a set of bearings and plastic spacers is a lot of money.

Burke T – September 18, 2019

I used SKF bearings and the recommended chemcials. It worked and ridded me of creak that I had been riding through for months. Not cheap

I have been running Enduro ceramic bearings for the past 5 years (2 sets). Whether it was the placebo effect or what, they felt good until the day they start making noise. Pull them out and that crunchy feeling is what I got. I was told Hambini by a friend. I watched video’s and learned much. Since they offered BB bearings I was anxious to give them a try. I purchased a set on a Sunday and the order was fill that day, shipped the next day. Now that’s service!! I in the states so it took a few days to arrive. They installed easily. 2 rides and 120 miles later I love these things. No creaks and feel buttery smooth. I recommend these to all BB90 owners. You will not be disappointed.

I was soo impressed with a Hambini BB86 Racing Edition BB and could avoid wanting the experience in my Trek BB90 bottom bracket. Hand no creaks or noice before and sure not after. But it runs as smooth as and old school 4-square BB. Definitive recommendation!

Excellent communication and professionalism.

Installed the BB90 kit and couldn’t be happier. Crank now rotates unbelievably smooth, with a very solid feeling and no more creaking! I couldn’t be happier. Three thumbs up. ?

I’m very pleased with the quality of the bearings and quality of the installation instructions. No more squeaky BB! Thank you for doing what you do – with style!

You shipped it immediately. I don’t have shite. It’s stuck in the USPS system. All I get from USPS is “ on its way to next destination “. BFD! That message has been since June 10. I’m so very disappointed in USPS. Can’t get any satisfaction as to when or where my purchase is. It’s not Hambini’s fault. That’s a lot of US $ just sitting somewhere other than in the hands of it’s own. My SwissSide wheels got to me in 3 (three) days from Poland. UPS INTERNATIONAL DID GREAT. John

Very happy so far. The bb90 creak seems to have gone so fingers crossed that’s its a permanent solution. The bearings are also incredibly smooth. Very nice

The bearings I purchased from Hambini for my Trek Emonda SLR are obviously very high quality and shipped to the US extremely quickly. I’m a very satisfied customer!

I wanted the ‘sort after‘ BB90 bearing kit, which seems to sell out as soon as it’s back in stock. The email notification works well and I eventually snapped one up. Despatched immediately and arrived very quickly, so it’s all good.

' src=

chris jacques – July 28, 2020

I changed bearings last year due to creaking. did not fix the creaking. Ordered bearings from Hambini, installed them exactly by his instructions, followed them to the letter, and success. so far no creaking. I only have 2 rides on them now. Happy days.

' src=

David G. – August 11, 2020

I bought the Hambini BB90 kit to replace the worn out originals on my c2015 Trek Madone 4.9. I made two attempts to buy on the Hambini website but missed out as the items went out of stock very quickly. An email to Hambini on Monday morning was answered within 10 minutes by the man himself offering to source the parts straight away. This included selecting the bearings and turning up a pair of Delrin bushes to interface with my Ultegra crankset. The kit arrived on Wednesday morning. Comprehensive fitting instructions may be found on the Hambini website. Following these to the letter resulted in a super- smooth and silent BB assembly which is a joy to ride and has quite transformed my bike. My riding experience has been almost exclusively on steel framed bikes; i’d certainly compare the spin quality of the Hambini BB90 set with that of Phil Wood or Royce BSA units. A number of correspondents on relevant forums have commented on the cost of this kit. Hambini has produced a video on bearing selection which gives an idea of the processes he employs and consequently, the costs involved. Then there is the cost of the Delrin bushes, turned up in small batches or, in my case, to order. This all takes skill, knowledge, time and experience. I think therefore, the kit alone represents great value for money. However, when Hambini’s personal customer support Is factored in the value looks truly exceptional.

' src=

Matthew K. – August 15, 2020

Very good, will definitely buy equivalent for other bikes when necessary.

' src=

Andrew Hyman – August 16, 2020

Great service and communication from Hambini. I had some questions about compatibility which he responded to quickly, alleviating my concerns. Excellent product, quite dear, but you get what you pay for.

' src=

Richard Bryan – October 15, 2020

The part which I removed from my 2019 Trek Checkpoint SL5 is marked “NSK 6805D Japan,” so I think it’s the same part which I purchased here. I was surprised at the amount of crud inside the bottom bracket shell, and the bearings were gritty and rusting. Less than 6,000 miles the bike.

' src=

Matt Clarke – October 23, 2020

Put these into a new 2019 frame emonda sl7. Bike was 6 weeks on the road bb creak after 1000km, changed at 1500km Instant fix. Easy to fit all my knowledge from youtube. Riding in lakedistrict still sweet.

David Gaertner – November 24, 2020

Hambini machined top hats to fit NTN bearings for me on my 2018 Trek Madone BB90. He did not have to hand-select bearings at the large end of the tolerance for me since my crank was not making noise yet. I had an older Madone that made horrible crank bearing noise which is why I replaced it with a new frame. The drive side bearing of my newer 2018 frame came-out with very little pressure which meant it was good for me to replace them now before the carbon fiber frame wore-out causing them to spin. Installing the new bearings with activator and retaining compound is a good preventative measure to keep the bearings from spinning causing you to have to buy oversized bearings. Don’t wait till they start to creak! In the past, bike shops have installed these by greasing them without retaining compound and that’s how the old frame wore-out. Hambini was very engaged to help me make the best choice. He even called me in the US from the UK on his own time on his own cost on a weekend. I also purchased NTN Zipp wheel bearings from him and I’m in the process of rebuilding the hubs now. As with me, I’m sure he won’t let you down when you need help!!!

Great video and talks and says it how it is. I go through bb90 trek bottom bracket as if they were going out out fashion. And has I used my bikes to fund raise for charities h4h and British Legion in memory of my eldest son and of course being built slightly larger than the so called average person at 105kg ,I have just purchased the token ninja bb with what I have read to take all the creaks away. We will see. Great to watch your videos on YouTube. Keep it up and speak your mind if you can back it up. Chapeau youngman

I guess I am one of the 9%! No complaints about the interaction or quality. Just disappointed in a still creaking BB. I will say they spin great in the stand and I was optimistic but still noisy.

Craig – May 3, 2021

Unassuming package delivered promptly. The visual difference to the OE bearings is unremarkable but you will notice it when you put them in. My vernier registered the same size on both the old and the new bearings but there is a clear difference when you push in with resistance felt so don’t go by the vernier. I put them in with the recommended activator and retaining compound, waited a few days and then took it out for a ride. The silence is golden. I have done a further 2500km on the bike since and it has been faultless. A few people have said this is expensive, it’s a bargain, I must have wasted so many days at the LBS and with Trek’s warranty department, I had pretty much given up hope until I got this. I cannot fault Hambini, his engineering and technical knowledge make others look like amateurs… Not bad for a five year old!

' src=

Steven C. – June 6, 2021

Unfortunately this didn’t work for me. My original bearings were quite loose but I still hoped these would work. The web site does say they might not work if the original bearings were loose so I guess this was an expensive mistake for me.

MR SIMON B PROVEN – July 10, 2021

Arrived promptly. I’d never installed a press fit bottom bracket before so I took my time. My old BB didn’t creak (after a shop used retaining compound for me when I had it serviced – it did at first). Followed the instructions with this product and it’s silent. Looking to buy another for a different bike which has had repeated fails – I don’t think the shop knew what they were doing, and now I feel confident to try it on a more problematic setup.

' src=

Stephen P – August 4, 2021

I didn’t think this would work but rather than scrapping my frame, I thought I would give it a try. I followed the instructions down to the letter and it has rid my bike of creak. $4k saved. My appreciation of engineering tolerances was limited before, I thank Hambini for educating me in this black art.

' src=

Car Davis – August 30, 2021

Great product which I hope will cure a customer’s clicking/creaking BB. This BB came with a clear rationale for why it should work and equally clear instructions on how to fit it. I had a question on whether to use the original dust shields. Hambini came back very quickly with an answer (they are not necessary and probably won’t fit; I tried and it’s true!). Overall I am very happy with the product and service received.

' src=

Reinhard E. – September 24, 2021

Put it in the shelf for the time being. If the bearings are of a similiar level of quality like the BB86 crankset i bought, they will do a great job. My Trek Emonda is still fine but it is always good to be prepared for the inevitable. Shipping, customs processing were fast and trouble free. Thanks Hambini!

My 2019 Trek Domane SL 5 was driving me crazy with the factory BB90 constantly creaking. It has been 6 months since I installed the Hambini kit and not a single creak is to be heard, very satisfied with the positive out come. THANK YOU Hambini.

' src=

Trent M – January 29, 2023

5 bike shops later and still no fix. I tried this as a last resort in hope more than anything else. I followed the instructions to the letter. I emailed Hambini for some guidance and he responded within a few hours on a Sunday! WTF.

I can’t fault it. There is clearly a difference at a very subtle level. No creak and I enjoy my ride rather than trying to alter my pedalling to stop it creaking.

The overall experience of watching the videos, to emailing the man himself was first class. When I get a new bike, I’m having another Hambini BB

Alma T – June 13, 2023

This is the only kit I have tried that works. I’ve been through the Token, Ceramicspeed, Kogel etc etc. They are garbage. Hambini’s methodology in this kit is very clear, he selects the biggest bearings from a wide selection. A time consuming process no doubt and with that comes a cost. Yes it is expensive but it works and is far cheaper than getting a new bike

' src=

Mark E. – December 21, 2023

Hambini kit NTN bearings measured exactly the same as original Trek NSK bearings. No creaking after fitting. BTW had no creaking or issues with original bearings but decided it was time to replace after 25K miles (2017 Domane). Wish I’d inspected original NSK bearings before ordering as it turns out they were near perfect even at that mileage…!

This is a made to order part, you would need to email me.

I would leave them clean but lots of people use grease.

Thanks- I’ll go clean 👌 No disadvantages to not using grease as a water ingress prevention measure?

The replacements would probably be too slack and you'd have to go back to having problems.

You can use a drop down spacer but it doesn't come with this kit.

It should do, the only difference is BB95 is a MTB spec, these bearings are really for road racing so you will not get the life.

JUST THE FACTS:

BB90 is the road bike version of Trek's proprietary Direct-in-frame bottom bracket system. No cups or extra hardware required. The Trek BB90 bottom bracket bearing replacement presses directly into the frame. These Shimano bearings work with all Shimano HollowTech crank systems.

Our zero-drag bearing shields are included with your purchase.

How do I know if my bike needs a Repair Kit or a Standard Kit?

If a bearing or both bearings are loose in the frame bottom bracket shell while you are riding and/or can be installed or removed by hand with little effort when the crank has been removed from the bike, you need our REPAIR KIT.

If the bearings are snug in your frame’s bottom bracket shell, and you need to knock the bearings out mechanically, and need to use a press to install the bearings, order our STANDARD KIT.

What’s the difference between a BB90 Repair Kit and the BB90 Standard Kit?

Short Answer:

The Standard Kit uses VibraTite530 while the Repair Kit uses VibraTite538. Both of these compounds secure the bearings in place during use while allowing for simple removal and servicing by standard means when necessary and DO NOT have any effect on your frame’s warranty whatsoever. The 530 works better in tight spots while the 538 works best with a looser fit, so please order the correct kit for the best results.

Many manufacturers, including Trek itself, are marketing “0.1mm oversize bearings” as a solution to the problem of bearing creak and bearing retention in Trek frames with bottom bracket bearing socket wear and for frames Trek admits might have a manufacturing variance that effects bearing fit. Either way, there is no way to know if their 0.1mm oversize is big enough or, as will be the case for most bikes, is actually way too big. Believe us when we say that 0.1mm is gigantic. Isn’t bigger a good thing? Answer: Only if it’s the right size, because bearings that fit too tight will not run smoothly, in many cases barely turning, and this means not just wattage-sucking, dismal performance, but a drastic reduction in bearing service life.

This is why we only use high-quality, standard size Shimano bearings with the right retaining compound and hardware to solve problems with Trek BB90 bikes.

ABOUT OUR BEARING CHOICES:

Ceramitech Bearings: Our Si3n4 hybrid BB90 ceramic bearings feature ultra-spherical silicon nitride balls matched to SAE 52100 chrome steel bearing races that have been processed with additional heat treatment and polishing steps. The result is a hybrid-ceramic bearing that lasts longer than any steel bearing with spin performance no steel bearing can rival. We’re so confident in the durability of our Ceramitech bearings that we back them with a Lifetime Bearing Exchange warranty. These Trek BB90 bearings feature mid-contact seals for extreme performance and durability. Each bearing comes lubricated with Kluber IsoFlex Topas NB 52 . Lifetime Warranty.

WS2 Coated Ceramitech Bearings: We took our amazing Ceramitech bearings and added an extremely durable, tungsten disulfide (WS2) coating that has a 0.03 coefficient of friction---which means it’s slicker than Teflon, graphite, and even molybdenum disulfide. WS2 has an affinity for oils and greases, which means it maintains a hydrodynamic layer of lubricant where it’s needed most. The result is astonishing spin performance and increased endurance. These Trek BB90 bearings feature mid-contact seals for extreme performance and durability. Each bearing comes lubricated with Kluber Isoflex Topas NB52. Lifetime Warranty.

ABEC-7 Steel Bearings: Crafted from SAE 52100 chrome steel, our BBInfinite ABEC-7 (ISO 492, Class 4) bearings are so buttery that you’d have to buy our Ceramitechs to find anything better. These Trek BB90 bearings feature mid-contact seals for extreme performance and durability. Each bearing comes lubricated with Kluber IsoFlex Topas NB52 or Koyo. 1-Year Bearing Exchange Warranty.

Note: Use appropriate bike bottom bracket tools for your installation and service needs.

How To Remove & Fit A BB90 Press Fit Bottom Bracket

In this post, complete with video, I show you how to remove and fit a BB90 Bottom Bracket on a Trek road bike (in this case my carbon Trek Domane 4.3, which I bought in 2013).

You will learn:

🔨 what tools you need to remove a set of seized BB90 bottom bracket bearings

🔩 how to use a bottom bracket press tool to fit new Trek BB90 bearings

🔧 how to avoid the plastic dust cover being pushed out when you reinstall the crankset

I filmed the video as part of a series where I stripped down and then renovated my 7-year-old Trek Domane 4.3 endurance road bike.

You can watch all of the videos in the series, in order by checking out this playlist .

How To Remove & Fit A BB90 Press Fit Bottom Bracket

This was actually the first and so far only time I’ve removed and fitted a bottom bracket (of any sort), so whilst the video will likely include things you shouldn’t do, at least you can see that it’s doable by someone with only a very modest amount of bike mechanic acumen.

Things You Will Need

Let’s start with the bike. Clearly this post/video is most relevant for bikes with press fit bottom brackets. In my case that’s a 2013 Trek Domane 4.3.

The BB90 bottom bracket standard, which is a proprietary Trek design, involves two sealed bearings being pressed directly into the bottom bracket shell within the (carbon) frame.

BB90 Bottom Bracket

The bearings have actually done quite well, lasting 6.5 years of all year riding on the muddy roads of Derbyshire and a cleaning regime that I would describe as, er, sporadic.

However, during a deep clean that was meant to be ahead of replacing just the headset bearings, I realised that one of the bottom bracket bearings was also a bit ‘grindy’. A full bike refurb was on the cards. By the time I’d acquired all the bits to do this, the bearing had totally seized up.

New BB90 Bottom Bracket Bearings

A light Googlewacking suggests that no one’s a particular fan of the BB90 standard . As mentioned, the bearings are pressed directly into the carbon shell and if they don’t fit exactly then it can cause creaking.

Apparently, over time, the carbon shell into which the bearings fit can get worn, increasing the diameter of the cups (so many random words…). It seems the power I am throwing down is insufficient to cause such wear, so this wasn’t an issue in my case.

Trek BB90 bearing kit

Despite this, whilst you can buy equivalently sized sealed cartridge bearings, I decided to play it safe and buy the official Trek BB90 kit (which is also suitable for BB95 bottom brackets).

Trek BB90 Bottom Bracket Bearing Kit

The kit which comes with two sealed bearings and a plasticky inner ‘sheath’.

Step 1: Remove the Pedal Cranks

Erm, I don’t appear to have shown this in the video (or indeed in any of the other videos in the bike renovation series).

You can Google this to work it out for the groupset you use.

I’ve got Shimano 105, so it was a case of using a hex (or Allen) key to remove the pinch bolts on the non drive side crank. I used the specific Hollowtech plastic circular tool to remove the plastic ‘preload adjuster’ and the non-drive side crank could be slid off the spindle. Then, said spindle, which is attached to the chainrings, could be pulled out of the bottom bracket from the drive side.

Finally, the fox (amateur mechanic) could see its prey (the bearings…).

Step 2: Get The Old Bearings Out

For this I invested in the correct tool, a Park Tool BBT 90.3 press fit bottom bracket bearing, er, tool.

Park Tool BBT-90.3 Bottom Bracket Bearing Tool

(Extra tip in brackets: for this whole job, use the right tools. Trying to hack either the removal or insertion of press fit bearings is a recipe for disaster, with a risk of doing irreparable – or at least expensive-to-fix – damage to your bike frame.)

You basically insert the pointy end of the BBT 90.3 through the middle of the bearing you are seeking to remove and then pull it as it pokes out from the other side of the bottom.

Inserting Park Tool BBt 90.3

As you pull it through, the splayed splines of the tool compress together until there is a click as it passes fully through the bearing. The splines of tool are then sat against the inside rim of the bearing. Stop pulling.

Pulling through Park Tool BBT 90.3 tool

Now you need to hammer (yes, hammer) the pointy end of the BBT 90.3 tool such that it pops out the bearing.

Park Tool BBT 90.3 tool against bearing

You can either do this carefully, and try to catch the escaping bearing and tool. Or you can whack it with gay abandon and delight in the clanging sound as the BBT 90.3 bounces along your garage floor.

Removing BB90 bearing

Repeat for the bearing on the other side.

Step 3: Clean Out The Bottom Bracket Shell/Housing

The real step 3 is probably to remove the plastic inner ‘sheath’ (in my top ten favourite words), because a replacement comes in the Trek BB90 kit.

Dirty BB90 bottom bracket housing

However, mine (my sheath) seemed in pretty good nick, so I just left it in there and gave it a good clean. Ahem.

Cleaning BB90 bottom bracket housing

The remainder of step 3 is to give the whole bottom bracket region, particularly where the new bearings will be seated a good clean. I used kitchen roll and lashings of GT80. Sue me.

Clean BB90 housing

Step 4: Apply Grease

A key step in any velomech scenario: a liberal application of grease.

Applying grease to BB90

As per the video, I applied grease around the inside of the bottom bracket cups, where the bearings were about to be seated.

Finish Line Grease Kit

My trusty Zinns Road Bike Maintenance book recommends also coating the outside of the new bearings. I don’t remember whether I did this.

Step 5: Press In The New Bearings

It’s time for another specialist tool.

The key thing (as I understand it) when inserting press fit bearings is to make sure they go in straight. This is all the more important for carbon frames when you ab-so-lutely, pos-i-tively do not want to crack your bottom bracket (or any bit of your frame).

Wheels Manufacturing Bottom Bracket Press Tool

So you’ll want a press tool.

BB90 pressing step 1

This is a threaded metal rod with handles that spin on the thread. You put the metal rod through the middle of the bottom bracket and then slide the new bearings onto the rod (in the orientation in which you want them pushing into the BB housing).

BB90 pressing step 2

You then slide specifically-sized metal discs (known as drifts) onto the threaded rod and then tighten the handles such that the drifts push inwards on the bearings, applying a consistent force such that the bearings are pushed straight into the bottom bracket.

BB90 pressing step 3

And here we see me turning the handles and pushing the new bearings into place (without cracking the carbon frame…):

BB90 pressing step 4

I bought a Wheels Manufacturing Universal Bottom Bracket Press tool. It wasn’t super cheap but it is good quality and comes with specially designed reversible drifts that can push in bearings with a range of different diameters.

Wheels Manufacturing Universal BB Press

As it happens, the BBT 90.3 bearing removal tool came with a pair of BB90-sized drifts, so I could have got away with buying a cheaper press. However, I plan to press many more things in my quest for bike mechanic mastery, so I was happy to invest in a more whizzbang tool.

And thus the new bearings were installed:

New bearing inserted

Step 6: Reinstall The Crankset

Again, exactly how you do this will depend on the groupset you are using.

I do have one twop twip to think about when you are reinstalling the spindle through the new bearings.

Bearing with diameter reducer and dust cover

The Trek BB90 kit that I bought differed slightly from the original bearings that I removed in that the new ones have a plastic insert that both reduced the inner diameter of the bearing and (I assume) acts as a bit of a cover to protect it from the elements.

Holding bearing cover in place when inserting crank

If you use the official Trek kit (or similar), when you push the spindle through the bottom bracket, make sure to press against the cover-cum-reducer on the opposite side to avoid it being pushed out. Once the cover has been popped out from the bearing, it is a devil to get back into place without cracking or creasing it.

Step 7: Bask In The Warm Glow Of Your Own Smugness

That’s pretty much it. Whilst it took a bit of time, and a reasonably significant investment in new tools, I successfully managed to install two new bearings in my BB90 bottom bracket.

Both the removal of the old bearings and the insertion of the new ones was pretty straightforward. I actually found that I enjoyed it. And, yes, there is a certain amount of smug satisfaction derived from tackling, and completing, a non-run-of-the-mill bike maintenance task.

Tools and Parts

Here are the tools and parts I used in completing this job:

  • Trek BB90/95 Bottom Bracket kit
  • Park Tool BBT 90.3 Bottom Bracket Bearing Tool
  • Wheels Manufacturing Bottom Bracket Press

Advice on loose bearings in Trek Madone (BB90)

  • 26 May 2021

Hi, first time poster Some time ago my bike bike produced a creak that I determined was caused by loose BB bearings on my Trek Madone 9.5. Long story short: I got a replacement frame, in the form of a Madone SLR (yaay, free upgrade). Recently I've noticed a small clicking sound when I pedal hard, and I remember from my previous encounter that it starts as an innocent-sounding click that occurs only every so often but evolves into a loud crack that makes me worried the frame with snap right in two under me. I removed the crank, and lo and behold, *both* bearings are loose! See this video (the behaviour is identical on the non-drive side). At this point I've ridden the bike less than 200 km. I'm baffled and confused at (seemingly) how little the frame can handle. One obvious question: Are the bearings in fact loose or is that just some sort of plastic cap I'm have a tug of war with? What you see is how loose they get; it's not like they fall out or anything. I did not do this inspection immediately after picking up my replacement build so I don't know how it looked brand spanking new. Secondly, could this somehow be my fault, because of my riding style? Due to a slight handicap my left leg is way stronger than my right, which potentially means one side of the bike is stressed harder than the other. If you're puzzled and amused, note that it's not like my left leg is super-human; it's just that my right is weak. So if anything the bike experiences less stress in total. Lastly, could this somehow be my fault, since I managed to let the bike fall on its side? The wind caught my bike during a break on a longer ride and it fell onto its drive side. The handlebar tape tells me that the handlebars took some of the fall and I wasn't on it at the time. The frame didn't touch the ground at all, as far as I can tell. But the right pedal did... Could this shake of the crank cause it? Is the BB really that brittle? It was immediately after this I first noticed the sounds, but that might as well because I've become a nerve wreck after the long story I made short in the beginning. Any advice appreciated. I can of course film some more or take pictures if that helps! My LBS has been wonderful in handling the warranty stuff on the previous frame, but now I'm starting to doubt myself and would like a second opinion. Thanks, Øsse

As above difficult to tell which. I should refer back to your supplying dealer, your contract is with them. Don't try messing about with the Hambini kit in the video which would invalidate your Trek warranty. Press fit bearings are the work of beelzibub himself so let your dealer sort it.

Creaks can come from anywhere, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions. Also that video linked appears to be a delrin cap/spacer over the top of the bearings and not the bearings themselves.

"First ride yesterday and today and honestly i felt the difference.Given my non pro built the Kogel ceramic BB made life easier on the road.Smoother pedal strokes. It is indeed watts saving! Adding the Kogel OSPW to my bike was another factor too.I felt a smoother ride and shifting gears was so quiet.Highly recommended."

"Man i love the QUALITY of the Kogel ceramic bottom bracket, now the cranks roll so smooth ! I can't understand how a top of the line bike comes with a cheap $30 bottom bracket "

"If a BB could be described as luxurious this is it. I’ve installed a lot of BBs, and this was a pleasure. So so smooth."

"When I first built my new super-bike with the sole intent on going as fast as possible, I decided to save a few bucks by not spec-ing a ceramic BB despite running one successfully on its predecessor for several years. That was a mistake. I could clearly feel how "sticky" the stock bb was whenever I removed the chain for cleaning and waxing. Having just recently installed a new Kogel BB, there are now truly, "no excuses.""

"These bottom brackets don’t quit! I’ve run this PF30 with CX seals on two generations of cyclocross race bikes - two matching bikes per year across four years. Demanding use, lots of washing, AND riding over winter in Eastern Canada, which involves snow, ice, and salt. Every BB held up without issue; set and forget. Amazing!"

Frequently asked questions

Guaranteed Performance  means working hard to make your experience with Kogel Bearings the best possible, every step of the way.

Kogel Bearings takes pride in delivering a best-in-industry warranty. Our 2-year warranty means you can feel confident and secure about your next two seasons of riding.

If a product fails in the first year, we will replace it. The second year requires an annual bearing service. A manual for that service can be found  here .

Bottom brackets fail for many reasons. The most common being contamination and neglect. Remove the crank set, spin the bearings to check if the bearings feel rough. If they do, a bearing service should bring them back to life. If the service does not help and the bearings still feel gritty, it is time to replace them.

Proper care is key to longevity. We recommend annual service to stay within the Guaranteed Performance Warranty, or sooner if your bearings feel rough. The current recorded mileage record is set at 28.000 miles on a single bottom bracket. What. Does your BB odometer tell you?

While the procedure is not too complicated, the job is almost impossible to do without very specific and potentially costly tools. A wood block and hammer are not a bottom bracket press, neither is a threaded rod from the hardware store and a stack of washers. ( here is a link to the procedure )

If you regularly replace bottom brackets on multiple bikes, it might be worth investing in the tools. If you only perform this procedure occasionally, it’s probably better to carry $50 and a six pack to your local bike shop and let the professionals take care of it.

While we do not require to use our Aqua Proof Installation Paste, we call it Shut Up Grease for a reason. Pick up a jar or a single use syringe  here . A simple remove and reinstall with all contact areas greased (most crucial are the BB shell, BB cup and crank spindle)

If that did not fix the problem, here are links to two blog posts on 1)  fixing bottom bracket creaks and  2)  finding and fixing creaks that sound like a bottom bracket, but actually come from somewhere else.

The cross seals are built for best protection. The difference in friction between the road and cross seals are around 0.5W on a bottom bracket. On the upside, bearings with cross seals are close to waterproof. If your road rides include gravel roads or if you regularly ride on wet roads, the cross seals will buy you some peace of mind.

The hourly rate varies from one shop to the next, mostly based on their expenses for real estate and the cost of finding good mechanics in the area. For this reason it is hard to put an exact dollar amount on the procedure. It would be reasonable to expect an installation to take around 30 minutes, so half of your local shop’s hourly rate is a good benchmark.

Just like your chain and cables, bearings need to be regularly serviced and work MUCH better when properly lubricated.

Inspect your bearings at least every few months (always after extreme wet muddy rides) and service your bearings at least once a year.

Easiest way to inspect a bearing is by removing the chain from the crank and spinning it using your fingers. The bearing will fall somewhere between these three conditions:

  • Clean  - feels like it’s spinning effortlessly in fresh grease
  • Dirty  - feels like it’s spinning with some grit in the grease
  • Dry  - feels like it’s spinning effortlessly, but it’s making more noise than usual

With this simple test, you can get a good sense of your bearings being contaminated, damaged or good for another ride.

If they feel gritty, you'll want to service them. Here is a  link  to the best practice in pulley service. And at a minimum, they’ll need to be serviced a year from their install date or last service.
