What to Do in SoHo NYC

And why you must visit.

travel money soho

With its many tourist attractions, as well as its cool vibe and gorgeous cast-iron architecture, SoHo is definitely worth visiting!

And, this post is a guide to things to do in SoHo, including where to eat, shop, and see art.

I also include a sample itinerary, family-friendly activities, and things to do at night.

To write this post, I relied on the extensive experiences that I and my fellow local tour guides of Free Tours by Foot have of SoHo.

What to Do in SoHo NYC

We lead dozens of guided walking tours through the streets of SoHo every week, guiding hundreds of visitors.

And, in the video below, Tour Guide Katie takes you on a virtual walk through the neighborhood.

And we also run the popular NYC Travel Tips Facebook group.

We asked our roughly 200k members to share their pleasant surprises in SoHo.

Read what they had to say. We used some of their suggestions for this post.

Our group is made up of locals, like our tour guides, veteran NYC visitors, as well as newbies to the city.

Now, without further ado, let's get to the good stuff!

Is SoHo Worth Visiting?

You can stroll its charming narrow, historic "cobblestone streets" (they are actually Belgium block streets) lined with art galleries.

The shopping is unrivaled and fits all budgets, with both designer boutiques and chain stores.

The food scene is interesting and there is always some kind of cultural activity to enjoy at night!

SoHo is also a fantastic neighborhood to stay in for tourists!

What Does SoHo Stand For?

SoHo stands for So uth of Ho uston Street.

The acronym was coined by Chester Rapkin, a city planning commissioner who published a report in the 1960s called “The South Houston Industrial Area”.

SoHo is located in Lower Manhattan and can be reached by multiple subway lines.

SoHo's boundaries are Houston Street in the north, Canal Street in the south, 6th Avenue in the west, and Crosby Street in the east.

History of SoHo

The land encompassing modern-day SoHo was marsh and forest land until Dutch Settlers established farms in the area in the 1640s.

An early Dutch map, the Manatus Map of 1639, shows plantations, roads, and structures in this area. A large portion of the land was owned during the 1660s by Augustus Herrman.

When he died, his brother-in-law, Nicholas Bayard, inherited the property, making him the largest landowner in Manhattan. (Bayard Street in Chinatown is named after Bayard).

By the late 1700s, large farms were being sold and subdivided in response to the growing population and urbanization of the City.

In the early 1800s, Broadway was paved and wealthier residents of the city began to build homes in the area to escape the increasingly crowded lower part of Manhattan.

By the 1850s and 60s, many fashionable hotels such as the famous St. Nicholas and premier department stores such as Tiffany’s, Lord & Taylor and Brooks Brothers had opened up.

Theaters and casinos sprang up along Broadway and the area became a hub of nightlife while the side streets were lined with expensive brothels.

In the 1870s and 1880s, the streets to the east and west of Broadway underwent a dramatic change when industry came to town.

This explosion of commercial activity prompted wealthy residents to flee the area and move further north of Manhattan.

Industrial growth also prompted the widespread use of cast iron to erect new factories in the district.

Approximately 250 cast-iron buildings stand in New York City and the majority of them are in SoHo.

It is these cast-iron buildings that give SoHo its distinct and stunning appearance.

Cast iron was an American architectural innovation and was cheaper to use for facades of buildings than stone or brick.

Cast iron is also pliable and easily molded so architects and builders could create intricately designed patterns in the Classical French and Italian styles while saving money.

In fact, many of the stone columns you will see on the ground level of cast-iron buildings are in fact cast iron painted to resemble stone.

Another advantage of cast iron that led to major changes in how buildings were made (and ultimately altered who and what resided in the neighborhood) was its strength.

The stronger construction allowed for window frames to be taller allowing for more sunlight into the interior of the buildings.

This was ideal for factories and industrial companies which benefited from this free source of lighting.

It was the advent of steel as a major construction material that brought an end to the cast-iron era.

Not only did cast iron disappear, but so did the higher-quality industry. From the 1910s to 1950s, SoHo’s beautiful buildings housed cheap, wholesale textile companies known as the "rag trade”.

Many factories illegally employed minors and immigrants for little pay to work in horrendous conditions known as ‘sweatshops’.

Numerous fires broke out in these factories and SoHo gained the nickname “Hell’s Hundred Acres.”

Eventually, even these factories shut down and moved elsewhere in the city and SoHo became an abandoned industrial wasteland.

By the late 1960s unknown artists just starting their careers, cheap rents, huge spaces, and great light, made these former factories attractive.

Some of the first artists to move into SoHo were Donald Judd, Claes Oldenburg, and Carl Andre.

Other up-and-coming artists flocked to SoHo like Andy Warhol, Jean- Michel Basquiat and street artist Keith Haring and this urban wasteland became a hip, avant-garde destination.

It’s estimated that SoHo was home to about 2,000 artists by the early 1970s and by 1973 there were 33 art galleries.

The area had become so run-down and empty that city officials began discussions of the construction of a lower Manhattan expressway that came to be known as the LOMEX project.

LOMEX would have ripped through much of the heart of lower Manhattan and the historic buildings of SoHo would be demolished to make way for new housing construction.

Historic preservationists began to petition for SoHo to be designated as a protected historic district and in 1973, the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District was created.

You can tell which streets are included in the district as they have brown street signs rather than the normal green signs.

SoHo’s significance in history has also been recognized nationally as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.

By the mid-1970s the enormous size of the lofts and the charm of the narrow streets paved with Belgium blocks and lined with gorgeous buildings invited real estate developers to buy up buildings and rent prices skyrocketed.

By the mid-1980s, designer boutiques, chic restaurants, and art galleries opened and SoHo remains a fashion and art capital of the world.

Today, SoHo is one of the top travel destinations in the world. It is definitely a neighborhood you do not want to miss in NYC.

Looking for fun things to do in SoHo NYC ?

Then you’re in the right place!

One of my favorite ways to spend a day in New York is choosing a neighborhood and exploring it without a plan.

Which is why, on a brisk winter day with nothing on my calendar, I decided to spend a day wandering SoHo and making fun local discoveries.

Sure, I’d been to the trendy NYC neighorbohood before, but only to visit one or two SoHo attractions at a time. On this day, I wanted to wander the neighborhood fully with my curiosity leading the way.

On that note, if you’re looking for best things to do in SoHo NYC on a day trip, here are some recommendations from a local.

Exploring SoHo NYC In Style

Before we dive into this Manhattan travel guide , let’s talk about the day’s look.

Being that SoHo is a style and design hub for the city, this was also the perfect excursion for trying out my new backpack and crossbody bag from Beside-U Handbags.

Beside-U Handbags  is a company I recently partnered with, as I’m in love with their concept. Many brands claim to mix style with functionality, but I’ve found most rarely live up to their promise. For the last two years I’ve been using an Osprey backpack, extremely comfortable and with decent space, but far from attractive.

After receiving their Arroyo Leather Trimmed City Backpack and the Hemet Leather Trimmed Travel Crossbody Bag I was pretty shocked to find that Beside-U actually had more room and more pockets than the dedicated Osprey travel brand, complete with bold and bright colors.

Hipster Things to Do in SoHo

The bags also showcase features even the most rugged travelers can appreciate, like:

  • RFID-blocking pockets large enough to fit an entire wallet. These pockets keep thieves from using electronic card readers and capturing your credit card and identification information.
  • A lightweight, water resistant design (each bag is roughly 1 pound or less)
  • A 100% Ripstop Nylon fabric (select areas with leather trim) to keep the bags from tearing.
  • Custom hardware details like a clip-on whistle dangle with a pretty double layer Beside-U logo — perfect for my fellow solo female travelers wanting to stay safe.

Each Beside-U bag also comes with its own unique features. For instance, the Arroyo Backpack offered two extra large external pockets for my 24-ounce water bottle, as well as two interior water bottle pockets if needed, though you can use them for other gadgets, as well.

Inside I fit my DSLR, a huge stack of promotional postcards for my tour company, a deodorant stick, my MacBook Pro (there’s a 13″ padded laptop pocket), an extra camera lens, an external camera flash, and my three lipsticks (hey, this was SoHo in style).

Beside-U Handbags Backpack with Inside Pocket

The smaller Hemet Crossbody Bag, which I stored inside the backpack, held my cash, coins, ID, credit cards, a wallet, keys, MetroCard, iPhone, pen, notepad, and full-sized paperback copy of Orange is the New Black .

And that was just on the inside!

There was also two large external pockets and one small external pocket I didn’t even use.

Beside-U Handbags Clutch with Inside Pocket

Basically, these bags offered way more space than one would need for a day, or even a long weekend, with style and identity protection to boot. As a photographer, I loved the padded external pockets that made it easy to switch lenses.

What Is SoHo NYC?

SoHo is a trendy New York neighborhood that stands for “South of Houston Street.”

While it was once known for its artistic vibe, today it has a more luxe feeling, with hip shops, eateries, and bars. You’ll still find art galleries in SoHo, though they tend to be more on the upscale side.

SoHo is also known for its cast-iron architecture. In fact, the SoHo–Cast Iron Historic District — which is both on the National Register of Historic Places and a National Historic Landmark — features the world’s largest collection of full and partial cast-iron buildings with about 250 examples!

For this reason, it’s a smart idea to book a New York City architectural tour that explores the neighborhood if you have the time.

Where Is SoHo NYC?

SoHo is located below Midtown Manhattan. Its boundaries are roughly Houston Street to the north, Canal Street to the south, Crosby Street to the east, and Sixth Avenue to the west.

The Best Things To Do In SoHo NYC

On that note, let’s dive into some of the most unforgettable things to do in SoHo NYC. There is so much to explore here, and you truly will never be bored!

1. Percolating At Maman

Weekends in SoHo NYC can be rough with the subway, especially coming from Brooklyn.

I ran into this country-inspired cafe clearly needing a coffee (or a whiskey), and the barista was extremely friendly consoling me with stories of his own sad subway tales.

This may not sound noteworthy, but friendly, un-rushed service in New York City is not always the easiest to find.

My Maman Americano was easily one of the best I’ve ever had, a slight thickness thanks to the added almond milk. They also serve a sweet yet floral Lavender Hot Chocolate.

If you’re joining for brunch you can grab a seat in the back room; otherwise, post up at the window bar and people watch or sip under wall hanging baskets and dangling vines.

This is one of the most Instagrammable places in New York City !

Street Mural in SoHo NYC

2. Inspired By Street Art

Looking for unique places in NYC ? Or things to do in SoHo right now, no matter what time it is?

While SoHo’s cobblestoned streets and upscale shopping give off a quaint vibe, the neighborhood is actually quite eclectic, with modern galleries, funky design shops, and edgy street art.

If you’re looking for free things to do in SoHo , simply wandering around will give you plenty of opportunities to stumble upon colorful works, although there are a few points of interest to add to an itinerary.

The Bowery Mural is a giant wall at Bowery and E. Houston Street that’s featured rotating pieces since 2008.

In the adjacent Little Italy neighborhood is The Lisa Project , which adorns Mulberry Street with al fresco works.

It’s one of the best things to do in SoHo!

3. Continue The Creativity In Local Galleries

One of the many reasons why New York is so popular is the culture, and along with Chelsea (Manhattan) and Bushwick (Brooklyn) , SoHo is known for its plethora of art galleries. Exploring these is one of the top SoHo activities you can add to your itinerary.

Strolling streets like Greene, Wooster, West Broadway, and Spring is where you’ll find most of them, and it’s easy to simply wander around without a plan and stumble upon great finds.

One particularly quirky gallery is The New York Earth Room (141 Wooster Street), a giant plot of dirt on the second floor of a narrow stairway.

It may sound boring — or just plain weird — but it’s surprising how moving the quiet space can be, not to mention you’ll undoubtedly twist your brain in knots wondering how much someone is paying in rent just to store dirt in SoHo. Plus, it’s one of the interesting non-touristy things to do in NYC .

Another notable gallery is  Westwood Gallery NYC (568 Broadway), a large and inviting space with rotating contemporary works in a large array of mediums.

There is also  Allouche Gallery (115 Spring Street), one of my personal favorites as it houses contemporary pieces by iconic artists like Keith Haring, thought-provoking works like the Rolling Stone’s tongue logo made to look like a kneeling woman by Ron English, and atypical mediums like multi-layered glass sculptures by Brooklyn artist Dustin Yellin.

If you’re ever in the area, make sure to add this to your list of things to see in SoHo. And if you’re traveling solo, know that visiting the galleries is one of the top things to do in New York by yourself .

4. Refuel At Some Great Restaurants In SoHo

There are so many delicious options when it comes to places to eat in SoHo, like:

  • Socarrat . This is an excellent Spanish paella and tapas bar offering tasty sangria to pair. It’s also one of the most Instagrammable restaurants in NYC .
  • Emilio’s Ballato . This old-school Italian eatery serves up incredible, well, anything with red sauce.
  • Tacombi . Their yummy tacos are served on organic corn tortillas.
  • Boqueria . This Spanish tapas spot is also a great place for bottomless brunch in NYC !

Nearby to the SoHo restaurants mentioned above is a bar called Tom & Jerry ‘s that offers a cheap happy hour with $5 beers and well drinks if you’re craving some booze.

Shopping in SoHo

5. Shop In SoHo For Fashion & More

No other neighborhood in NYC has a better reputation for shopping than SoHo.

You’ll find luxury brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Coach, and Marc Jacobs, as well as popular commercial retailers like H&M, Topshop, Bloomingdale’s, and Uniqlo (amazing for budget-friendly adventure travel gear , by the way).

That being said, I recommend digging around for the independent shops for a more culturally immersive experience. A few recommendations for shopping in SoHo include Meg, Mystique Boutique NYC, and Lingo.

Also don’t miss The Market , a flea market showcasing local designers and artists as well as vintage vendors.

HousingWorks Books is one of the best things to do in SoHo

6. Get Books On A Budget

I love to read books. Real, paper-made, binded, printed books. The problem is real books are often real expensive, especially compared to their Kindle counterparts.

Not at Housing Works Bookstore , where almost every title I picked up seemed to range between $5-$15.

I ended up with some cool photo-centric books, one on bicycles ($8.50), one on cats ($10), and a “blind date with a book” (books wrapped in paper so you can’t see their titles, with literary clues written on the front).

I learned the reason the books are so budget-friendly is that Housing Works is a volunteer-run organization focused on ending AIDs and homelessness, so my purchase went to a good cause.

It’s definitely one of the more inspiring SoHo attractions to make a stop at, and also a great spot if you’re looking for the best New York souvenirs that also give back. And if it’s a rainy day in NYC , it’s a great place to spend some time perusing titles and relaxing with a novel.

Note I also love perusing the Housing Works Thrift Store when exploring Greenwich Village .

What to Do SoHo New York

7. Savor Free Tea Samples In A Funky Space

While I like tea, I would never choose it over coffee. Until I discovered T2 Tea , a shop so bright and bubbly you’ll be pulled in even if you don’t mean to stop inside.

I was attracted to the bright pastel colors emitting from the shop like a moth to a flame, and even more enticed by a long table with aromatic complimentary samples like a budget backpacker to a free…well, anything.

The shop focuses on matcha, and the woman working the serving station was more than happy to explain what this meant. When making matcha, the tea stems are removed and the leaves ground into a fine green tea powder to maximize antioxidant benefits.

Also, fun fact:

Did you know Japanese Samurai drank matcha before going into battle due to the tea’s energizing properties? Pretty neat.

The shop is a sensory kaleidoscope of colors, tastes, sounds, and scents — along with the samples they have beautiful tables showcasing open tea tins for you to smell — and I instantly felt uplifted just being in there.

8. Sip An Art-Inspired Pick-Me-Up At La Colombe Coffee

I’ve seen cafes do latte art before, though never have I been asked what design I would like on my coffee.

I told the java artist to surprise me, and was promptly given a creamy latte adorned with a floral and heart design.

La Colombe Coffee  is also home to the “draft latte,” a coffee and milk concoction that has a Guinness-like texture, as well as the coffee version of the “Black and Tan,” 50% pure black cold brew coffee and 50% draft coffee.

Yogurt from Chobani Cafe

9. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth Without Guilt At Chobani Cafe

One of my favorite places to eat in SoHo is Chobani Cafe (yes, Chobani as in the yogurt).

The brand’s owner is Turkish, so the cafe — which has a decent amount of seating, by the way — features a Turkish menu of simit, Mediterranean dips, and sweet yogurt treats.

My go-to is the Spinach & Garlic Dip laced with Kalamata olives and sumac and served with simit chips, followed by the Fig & Walnut Yogurt drizzled with clover honey.

Bonus: 10% of the cafe’s profits go to charities that help provide nourishing food to underserved communities.

Drinks at the Pegu Club

10. Visit Bars In SoHo (Fun Things To Do At Night!)

Grabbing late night drinks is one of many fun things to do in SoHo at night .

For something historic, head to the Ear Inn, a dive bar that has been serving drinks since 1817. It’s also open late for those looking to enjoy NYC after midnight .

Love wine? Visit La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels for an impressive wine list and delicious small plates.

And if you’re looking for a fun night out and love a good cocktail, try The Ship. Started by alums of Little Branch and Please Don’t Tell, the drinks at this barge-themed watering hole are fantastic — like the “Marie Adrienne” made with silver tequila, mezcal, amargo de chile, lime, and fresh blood orange. Yum!

When it comes to what to do in SoHo , you can’t go wrong with the recommendations above!

Love the red color of that bag, really bright! You can stop all the traffic in Soho when you want to cross the street, just wave it. Your post was very informative and I loved the pictures. Great job and thanks for the suggested recommendations for places to visit. I definitely will take up on them.

@John: Definitely get the Lavender Hot Chocolate! 🙂

I use to go to Soho when I was in my late teens…over 20 years ago. I loved it!!! Thanks for posting the photos. It looks much different. I love the little red hand purse.

@Wendy: My parents grew up in the city and they always talk about how things have changed so much. I believe SoHo used to be a bit more focused on the arts?

Those sound like awesome ways to enjoy Soho! Pinned and shared.

This depends on the currency provider. Some providers offer next-day delivery, sending your travel money using Royal Mail's Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm service. There will be an extra cost for this and you can see how much when you compare the holiday money prices.

There are many destinations where taking some local currency is extremely useful to make sure you are covered in places where credit cards are not accepted. Many of the smaller retailers globally will not allow credit cards, so cash is the only option.

Read our blog post on taking cash on holiday .

The best time to buy any travel money is when the pound is performing strongly relative to the currency you are buying, this means it will have a higher exchange rate, so will give you more currency for your money. The amount you receive is calculated by multiplying the exchange rate by the amount of pounds you want to spend, so the higher the exchange rate, the more foreign currency you get.

Exchange rates are constantly changing but we show you the historical exchange rate performance for each of the currencies so you can have more of an idea of whether now is a good time to buy your travel money.

Exchange rates tend to be very similar wherever you are in the world to those offered in the UK, however waiting until you are away means you may be stuck with poor exchange rates, fewer options of places to offer competitive rates or even worse, you may have to pay big additional fees and commissions. By buying your travel money in the UK there are no hidden fees, charges or nasty surprises, you know exactly how much you are getting.

Once you have found the best rate, place an order on the currency suppliers’ site, and pay for your currency. Each currency supplier has different payment options, including bank transfer, debit card, with some suppliers offering payment by Apple pay and Android pay. Once your order has been confirmed your order will be prepared and your currency sent to you by registered delivery, some suppliers even offer next-day delivery.

SoHo

Soho, NYC neighborhood guide

Soho, NYC is notable for its shopping and dining options, but which spots are considered the absolute best?

Shaye Weaver

What’s the deal with Soho?

Soho, NYC is a shopping enclave full of high-end boutiques and buzzworthy pop-up shops, as well as a sea of street vendors touting designer knockoffs in the form of sunglasses, handbags and scarves. Just make sure to save some change—and your phone battery—so you can grab coffee and a pastry from one of the many Instagrammable cafes and eateries packed into the downtown nabe. But don’t write off Soho as a mere urban shopping mall. Though many of the art galleries that made Soho New York a contemporary-art hot spot in the 1970s and ’80s decamped to Chelsea and the Lower East Side , some excellent art spaces remain. Walk along the cobblestone streets and find great New York restaurants, bars and things to do in this downtown neighborhood.

If you only do one thing

Shop at Pearl River Mart , which carries an extensive collection of Asian products.

Go off the beaten track

Take a guided tour of 101 Spring Street , the former home of artist Donald Judd, whose art can be seen at art galleries around the world. The formerly private living and working space provides “firsthand experience of Judd’s concept of permanent installation in downtown New York,” according to the Donald Judd Foundation, which operates the building.

On a sunny day

Do some shopping because Soho is known for its plethora of upscale and trendy stores.

On a rainy day

Go to the Museum of Ice Cream and indulge in all things cold and creamy or peruse books at the Housing Works Bookstore Café.

Get cultured

Visit the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art , which is the only dedicated LGBTQ+ art museum in the world and has a mission of showcasing and preserving LGBTQ+ art as well as fostering the artists who create it.

Grab a tart and coffee at 12 Chairs  or take a date to Raoul’s for dinner and drinks.

Nearest subway stations

Prince, Canal, Spring Street, Broadway-Lafayette St and Bleecker Street stations.

What else is nearby?

The beloved neighborhood of Little Italy and Nolita are to the east while Greenwich Village is to the north. Both neighborhoods contain some of the best dining in NYC.

SoHo, best neighborhood in nyc

10 Best Things to Do in SoHo NYC + MAP

Home | Travel | North America | United States | New York | NYC | 10 Best Things to Do in SoHo NYC + MAP

There are lots of awesome things to do in SoHo, NYC , from browsing art galleries and museums to going out for drinks and shopping for luxury items. As one of the best places to see in Manhattan , SoHo is well worth a visit, even if you only have a few hours to spend here.

SoHo stands for South of Houston Street, and it’s a Lower Manhattan neighborhood  nestled between Little Italy and Hudson Square. It’s known for its trendy artist’s lofts, cast-iron architecture, and boutique stores, although there are other interesting SoHo attractions , like museums, theaters, and cafes. So, if you love art, shopping, or the elegant and fashionable reputation of the Big Apple, you’ll like SoHo.

We’ve visited New York City several times, and I can tell you that SoHo definitely has its own distinct vibe. So, in this guide, I’ll share the 10 best places in SoHo you must visit.

1. Browse the art galleries, something to do in SoHo during the day

Browsing the local art galleries is one of the quintessential activities in SoHo , so if you’re into art, I recommend it. There are a few galleries in particular that are popular with artists, collectors, and enthusiasts.

First, the Eden Gallery showcases all kinds of contemporary pieces, so you’re bound to find something you like here. Across the gallery’s four floors, you’ll find paintings, sculptures, mixed media installations, and even digital art. In addition to contemporary art, the Eden Gallery is known for its nature photography, as well as papercuts and shadow boxes.

Eden Gallery, best places in SoHo to visit

The New York Earth Room is another interesting place to go in SoHo , especially if you like conceptual art. This large-scale, long-term installation was created in 1977 by sculptor Walter de Maria, who used 250 cubic yards of earth to fill the 3,600ft² space. It’s an example of land art and explores the relationship between nature and man-made works.

Jeffrey Deitch is also worth mentioning, as it’s a gallery specializing in contemporary and avant-garde art. It features a rotating roster of exhibitions, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints.

2. Treat yourself to a gourmet meal, the best thing to do in SoHo as a couple

Along with its vibrant arts scene, SoHo offers plenty of great places to eat. One of the best places in SoHo to get a delicious meal is Mercer Kitchen , which specializes in contemporary American cuisine. It’s owned by renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichte, so the menu is full of gourmet dishes and excellent fish and seafood. Mercer Kitchen also has a raw bar and an excellent selection of wines, beers, and fruity cocktails.

Another spot I recommend is Boqueria Soho , which serves Barcelona-style tapas. Coming here is a fun thing to do in SoHo with friends since you can share all kinds of small plates like patatas bravas , tortilla española , pan con tomate , Manchego cheese, and Ibérico ham. The restaurant also has yummy paella , churros con chocolate , and albóndigas (meatballs).

Boqueria SoHo, fun places to go in soHo new york city

For something more laid-back, check out Chobani SoHo , a café based on Chobani’s line of yogurt. Lombardi’s is another excellent spot, and while it’s actually in Little Italy, it’s right next to SoHo. It’s been open since 1905, and its Neapolitan-style pizza is one of the best foods to eat in NYC .

Finally, The Ear Inn is the oldest bar in the U.S. to continuously serve alcohol, and it’s housed in a building from 1817. Along with beer, wine, and cocktails, you can dine on all kinds of burgers, salads, and chicken pot pie.

3. See a musical or play, a fun thing to do in SoHo at night

This is a wonderful neighborhood in Manhattan to appreciate the performing arts, and seeing a play or musical , a fun thing to do in SoHo at night . There are two places in particular that I recommend if you want to take in a movie or an off-Broadway show .

Film Forum, best things to do in soho new york

First, the Film Forum is an old movie theater that originally showcased independent films when it opened in the 1970s. Today, it has four cinema rooms where you can see foreign art films in addition to indie flicks. The Film Forum is one of the few non-profit cinemas in the city, and you can get tickets on the website or at the box office.

The other spot is SoHo Playhouse , an off-Broadway theater, and the former home to the New York Academy of Theatrical Arts. It has a regular line-up of musicals and plays, and it hosts the International Fringe Encore Series every year, so it’s a must-see in SoHo for thespians.

4. Go shopping, something to do in SoHo with friends

With its restaurants, galleries, and theaters, the only thing missing from SoHo is a shopping district . Well, in the area between Wooster Street and Broadway, between Houston Street and Canal, you’ll find all kinds of stores and retailers.

For example, there are lots of high-end shops and luxury brands where you can treat yourself to some new clothes, shoes, or accessories. Just a few of the big-name brands here include Polo Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Patagonia, Birkenstock, Nike, and ZARA.

Shopping in SoHo best things to do

Some other highlights include the Apple Store and Tiffany & Co., which has divine jewelry and fragrances. In addition to the boutiques, there are children’s stores, independent retailers, and bargain outlets, so everyone can find something here. Even if you aren’t a shopaholic, browsing the shops is something to do around SoHo if the weather’s too cold or rainy.

5. Take a sightseeing tour, one of the best things to do in SoHo, NYC

If you’re not sure what to see in SoHo or you’re short on time, I recommend taking a sightseeing tour. I like this 2-hour tour in particular since it goes to the best places in SoHo as well as Little Italy and Chinatown.

First, you’ll check out SoHo’s historic Cast Iron District and see the beautiful architecture along Spring and Greene Streets. Your guide will point out notable structures like the E.V. Haughwout Building and the Old Police Station, which is now a private home but still has its early 20 th -century Beaux-Arts design.

Chinatown tour cool places to visit near SoHo nyc

You’ll also see the cast-iron balustrades and rusticated arches of 421 Broome Street. The penthouse of this five-story property once belonged to Mary-Kate Olsen, and it’s where Heath Ledger spent his final moments.

The next part of the tour takes you to the neighboring areas of Little Italy and Chinatown . Learn about the mobster history of Nolita and visit the Ravenite Club, Alleva Dairy, and Umbertos, where gangster Joe Gallo was shot. You’ll also pass Old Saint Patrick’s, the Italian American Museum, and the National Shrine Church of San Gennaro.

Finally, in Chinatown , you’ll hear the story of the Bloody Angle at Doyers Street, one of the most famous streets in NYC , where several murders took place in the 1920s and 30s. Your tour guide will also take you to an old opium den before ending the tour at Columbus Park. This is one of the best tours in NYC , especially since you can experience three neighborhoods in one visit.

6. Try a cronut at Dominque Ansel Bakery, a delicious thing to do in SoHo

Whether you spend your day in SoHo shopping, looking at art, or taking a tour, you’ll need to refuel. For something quick and delicious, head to Dominique Ansel Bakery , one of the best places in SoHo for a sweet treat.

The bakery is owned by French pastry chef Dominique Ansel, who creates all kinds of scrumptious baked goods. You can find traditional French treats like butter croissants and chocolate eclairs, along with more unique creations like chocolate chip cookie shots, frozen s’mores, and banana bread tiramisu.

Cronuts at Dominique Ansel Bakery, attraction in SoHo NYC

However, Dominique Ansel is most well-known for the cronut, a croissant-donut hybrid. Introduced in 2013, the cronut quickly became a food craze, and it’s still a popular menu item and one of the best foods in NYC to try. It has the flakiness of a croissant with the sweetness of a donut, so if you want to try it, this is the place to go.

Of course, the bakery offers lots of variety, like savory sandwiches, quiches, and hot and cold drinks. So, for a cheap thing to do in SoHo with friends or your partner, take a dessert break at this iconic bakery.

7. Explore the Cast Iron District, a unique thing to do in SoHo, New York City

I already mentioned the Cast Iron District a bit when talking about the sightseeing tour through SoHo. If you’d like to explore this historic attraction in SoHo , below are some highlights to consider.

In the late 1800s, cast-iron architecture was one of the symbols of the Industrial Revolution, and eventually paved the way for NYC’s massive skyscrapers. Today, there are hundreds of cast-iron structures in SoHo, although some stand out more than others.

For example, the E.V. Haughwout Building is a five-story commercial loft at the corner of Broome Street and Broadway. Built in 1857, it features two cast-iron street-front facades and, at 79 feet tall, it was considered one of the city’s first skyscrapers at the time.

Cast Iron District, things to do in soho new york

Another must-see in SoHo is the Singer Building on Broadway . This Art Nouveau-style office building was created in 1904 and has a façade made of brick, steel, and terracotta. It also has elements of Beaux Arts-style architecture, with cast-iron detailing on the balconies.

The Cable Building at 611 Broadway is on the corner of Houston Street and spans a full block, so you can’t miss it. It was built in the early 1890s and features a two-story arcade with iron spandrels, ornate moldings, and a façade of brick, stone, and terracotta. Its sculptural elements, like the copper lion’s faces, stand out.

Finally, 101 Spring Street is a beautiful cast-iron building from 1870, which now serves as an artist’s residence and studio.

8. Visit the Leslie-Lohman Museum, another cool thing to do in SoHo, NY

Speaking of art, another cool place in SoHo for art enthusiasts is the Leslie-Lohman Museum . It houses an impressive collection of LGBTQ+ drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and prints.

The pieces here explore themes of gay rights, queer expression, and other LGBTQ+ issues. As one of the oldest institutions in the country to preserve LGBTQ+ art, the Leslie-Lohman Museum contains works by well-known painters and lesser-known artists.

Leslie-Lohman Museum, fun places to go in soho new york

8. Visit the Leslie-Lohman Museum, another cool thing to do in SoHo

For example, the permanent collection features work by David Hockney and Andy Warhol, as well as photos by Robert Mapplethorpe. You’ll also see pieces by LGBTQ+ artists like George Platt Lynes, James Bidgood, and Del LaGrace Volcano.

The museum holds temporary exhibitions, too, so if you’re looking for things to do in SoHo during the day or when it rains, check out the collection.

9. Go out for drinks, the best thing to do in SoHo at night

When the sun begins to set over the city, the fun doesn’t have to end. Going out for drinks is one of the best things to do in SoHo at night , especially as a couple or with a group of friends.

This neighborhood offers several beautiful places to get cocktails and enjoy a lively atmosphere. Without a doubt, one of the best places in SoHo for drinks is JIMMY on the 18 th floor of ModernHaus SoHo . Inspired by Picasso’s Blue Period, this New York City rooftop has an indoor lounge, live music, and an outdoor plunge pool. 11 Awesome Things To Do in Soho For Backpackers

Hostelworld Blog | Posted on November 30, 2017 |

Even if you’ve never been to London, you’ve probably heard of Soho. It’s the loudest, busiest, dirtiest and craziest neighbourhood in the capital. Covering around a square mile between Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus and Tottenham Court Road, this neighbourhood crams a lot into its narrow, winding streets. Soho is infamous for its raucous nightlife, colourful gay scene and neon sex shops – but dig a little deeper and you’ll discover there’s more to this historic neighbourhood than meets the eye. To help you appreciate its finer qualities, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Soho on a budget.

1. Two Words: Bacon Naan

2. Visit The House That Is Definitely NOT A Brothel

Things to do in Soho @havepillowwilltravel

📷: @ havepillowwilltravel

Nope, no this house at 7 Meard Street in Soho is definitely, 100%, NOT a brothel. And just to prove it, the owner put a sign on the front door saying:

THIS IS NOT A BROTHEL THERE ARE NO PROSTITUTES AT THIS ADDRESS

The owner in question was the artist and London ‘character’ Sebastian Horsley, who sadly died several years ago. The sign was put up, as you might have guessed, to stop people confusing his house with a brothel, and still remains there today. A wonderfully quirky little attraction that is worth hunting down.

3. See London’s Most Famous Water Pump

Things to do in Soho @michael_kram

📷: @michael_kram

Never thought you could get excited about a water pump? Well, think again. John Snow’s Water Pump on Broadwick Street in the heart of Soho is guaranteed to impress. The pump itself is nothing special – a pretty old Victorian pump – but in the middle of the 19 th century it became the scene of one of the biggest breakthroughs in modern medicine when the physician John Snow realised that an outbreak of cholera in Soho was geographically centred around the public water pump. This led to the discovery that water could be a carrier of disease, and had a huge impact on public health and waste management.

4. Embrace The Sex Shops & Neon Signs

Things to do in Soho @saskia_lane

📷: @saskia_lane

Soho is famous for its association with the sex industry, and whilst most of its seedier establishments have since been moved on, there are still plenty of neon-clad sex shops still selling adult ‘toys’ and novelty willy straws. These can be fun to visit, and don’t take themselves too seriously.

London geek fact: most of the neon sex signs around Soho were designed by artist Chris Bracey. If you want to see more of his works, then a visit to God’s Own Junkyard is a must – along with some amazing other  free things to do in London .

5. Find All 7 Soho Noses & Become A Millionaire (maybe)

Things to do in Soho @facesinarchitecture

📷:  @facesinarchitecture

Keep your eyes peeled when walking around Soho and you might just spot a life-sized nose poking out of one of the buildings. The tiny sculptures appeared during the 90s, and since it took over a decade for artist Rick Buckley to come forward and claim responsibility (they were apparently a protest at the growing amount of CCTV in London), a huge number of urban myths surround the noses to this day.

The most persistent legend states that if you manage to spot all seven of the Soho Noses, you will become fabulously wealthy. Whilst it’s not clear whether there are even seven noses still in existence, it’s still worth a shot.

6. Lose Yourself In The Enormous Foyles Bookshop

Things to do in Soho @albainbookland

📷:  @albainbookland

If you love books, then a visit to Foyles is a must. It’s one of the biggest bookshops in Europe, and both the selection of books and beautiful building make it my favourite. Spread over five floors, and featuring over 200 thousand titles, this iconic London bookshop stocks everything from modern classics to instruction manuals on how to start your own blog. The café upstairs serves healthy homemade food and a great selection of loose leaf teas and there’s even a small exhibition space alongside it.

The great thing about a store this size is that there’s no over-attentive staff, emotionally blackmailing you into buying anything, so you can browse at leisure without spending a penny – well, in theory, but it’s hard to leave a bookshop like this empty handed!

7. Peer Down Onto An Abandoned Victorian Street

Things to do in Soho @brittamoeller82

📷: @ brittamoeller82

We Brits sometimes take it for granted, but, as any American or Aussie will tell you, it’s actually pretty incredible how much history you can find all over London.

For a little reminder of London’s past, head to the traffic island on Charing Cross Road and look down. Through the metal grate beneath your feet, you can just make out a road sign several metres below you. This is what remains of Little Compton Street, a Victorian street that was buried to make way for Charing Cross Road. This is one of those weird little hidden gems guaranteed to make you fall in love with London all over again.

8. Check Out Soho’s Awesome LGBT Scene

Things to do in Soho @amelierosser

📷:  @amelierosser

London is known for being one of the most open and inclusive cities in the world, so it’s no surprise there’s a big LGBT community. Soho has been the heart of this community for years, with a huge number of LGBT-friendly pubs and clubs, most of which are located on or near Old Compton Street. Some of my favourites include the huge G-A-Y bar, SHE Soho and Friendly Society.

9. Drink ALL The Coffee

Things to do in Soho @lizzynickellphotography

📷:  @lizzynickellphotography

Soho has got one of the highest concentrations of decent coffee shops in London, so there’s no shortage of places to refuel and recaffeinate. Some of my favourites include Soho Grind, where you can try a colourful turmeric, beetroot or matcha latte and even discover a hidden speakeasy down below; Tap – No 193 Wardour St for delicious coffee in a relaxed setting; Rapha Cycle Club, where two of my favourite things, coffee and bicycles, come together; and Crosstown Donuts, where you can pick up a divine sourdough and even vegan donut with your coffee.

10. Go (Window) Shopping

Things to do in Soho @georginacowley

📷:  @georginacowley

Usually I’d say ‘buy plane tickets, not souvenirs’, but when in Rome… Soho is home to some of Europe’s most loved shopping areas, including the fashion mecca of Oxford Street, which forms Soho’s border in the North and is home to the Topshop-mothership, Urban Outfitters and more; the oh-so-Instagammable Liberty, with its gorgeous displays and mock-Tudor façade; the pretty and vibrant Carnaby Street; plus many small independent shops dotted around.

11. Get Into London’s Best Photography Gallery For Free

Things to do in Soho @danalixenberg

📷:  @david.ja.dunn  & @danalixenberg

This huge gallery in Soho, The Photographers’ Gallery, is one of the best places to see world-class photography in Europe, with constantly changing exhibitions across multiple floors. It also presents the extremely prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize every year.

Yet somehow it still flies under the radar of most tourists. Money-saving tip: arrive early! Entry usually costs £4, but if you go anytime before 12pm it’s completely free, making it one of the best things to do in Soho on a budget.

Best Value Hotels in Soho, New York City

New York City’s Soho neighborhood doesn’t have the same tourist attractions as the Upper East Side or Midtown West, but it is the city’s haute, bohemian fashion epicenter. Avant-garde boutiques, mainstream retailers, and be-seen restaurants dominate the area’s historically preserved cast-iron industrial buildings, and most lodging options fall into the pricey boutique-hotel category. But for budget travelers wanting to stay in the hip neighborhood, here are Soho’s best good-value hotels.

Solita Soho Hotel

Soho, new york, united states.

The 42-room Solita Soho Hotel is a small, stylish, mid-range hotel in hip location, five minutes from both Chinatown and Little Italy. The immediate area is teeming with upscale shopping options and the cheaper stores on Broadway are within easy walking distance as well; restaurants are also plentiful in the neighborhood. The rooms are plain but serene and available at competitive rates for the neighborhood. All have contemporary fixtures including work desks with an Aeron-style chairs, reading lamps, irons,  wall-mounted flat-screen TVs with cable, safes, and coffeemakers. Bathrooms feature handsome slate-gray panel tiles and dual-massage showerheads.

Holiday Inn SoHo New York

The Holiday Inn SoHo -- on the border between SoHo and Little Italy -- is a mid-range chain hotel and lacking in distinctive style (Solita is slightly more snazzy), but it's a clean, contemporary option that delivers on all of the brand staples. Rooms feature flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. Free newspapers are delivered daily to the rooms, and there is free coffee and tea in the lobby. Popular with business travelers, Holiday Inn has a large meeting room and 24-hour business and fitness centers. Families may like the size of the rooms, which are more spacious than can be found at many mid-range options in New York City. There is also an on-site restaurant that is open for breakfast and dinner. In all, this Holiday Inn offers excellent value for the hip downtown location.

Spain is considerably affordable compared to other European countries, and Barcelona is its crown jewel. The city has roots tracing back to the end of the 1st century BCE and beautiful architecture throughout its winding streets, such as Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and his world-famous unfinished church, La Sagrada Familia.

If you tire of exploring Barcelona’s impressive history, gorgeous Barceloneta Beach is just a few minutes away from the city center. And at night, you’ll find plenty of entertainment options, from rooftop bars and clubs to concert venues and flamenco shows.

Barcelona is excellent for first-time solo travelers because its compact layout, wide sidewalks and excellent public transportation makes getting around town without a car a breeze. Visiting Ho Chi Minh City has become something of a bucket-list item for many backpackers. Its vibrant culture, friendly people and amazing food attract millions of tourists annually. And it’s also one of Vietnam’s safest cities .

Try some of the mouth-watering street food available in pretty much every corner of the city (especially Districts 1, 3 and 5), do some shopping at the Ben Thanh Market, visit the Notre Dame Cathedral or book a tour of the Mekong Delta to learn more about the local flora and fauna.

Getting around is also pretty easy, with many transportation options, from the new metro to buses, taxis and motorbikes. However, one thing to keep in mind is that U.S. citizens need to apply for a Visa before they can be granted entry into Vietnam.

Best for solo female travelers: Montreal, Canada

  • Very safe and walkable city
  • Visitors can stay for up to six months without a Visa
  • Toronto is only five hours away by direct train
  • Not a great option for budget travelers
  • The winter weather can be harsh

Why we chose it : Montreal is one of the safest cities in Canada, and it is only a short flight away for travelers from the U.S. The city has a vibrant art scene, a diverse population and plenty of old-world charm with its mix of classic and modern architecture.

Traveling solo as a woman might cause your loved ones some anxiety. But Montreal is a great place for women to travel alone. The city is safe and offers much to do, from beautiful architecture, such as Notre-Dame Basilica, to artisanal shopping in Old Montreal. And while the population is predominantly French-speaking, many residents also speak English, so you should have no problem communicating.

Visitors from the United States can stay in Montreal for up to six months without a visa. It’s also a good point of departure for exploring the rest of Canada. Trains depart for Toronto several times a day, and the trip is about five hours.

Accommodations in Montreal can be more expensive than in other international destinations, but enrolling in the best hotel rewards programs may help.

Best for going on solo travel tours: Chicago, Illinois

  • You can find many different types of guided tours
  • Has an excellent public transportation system
  • One of the best culinary destinations in the U.S.
  • Weather can be unpleasant if you visit at the wrong time

Why we chose it : Chicago is home to some of the best travel tours in the country. From river cruises to walking food and drink excursions, you’ll have no problem filling your time in the Windy City.

Chicago is one of the best places to travel in the U.S. It’s home to a wide variety of guided tours, covering everything from the city’s mob history to its architecture and natural landmarks. And if you love Chicago dogs or deep-dish pizza, you can take a walking food tour to enjoy some of the city’s best restaurants in a single day.

Chicago is also home to inspiring architecture, such as Willis Tower and Cloud Gate in Millennium Park. The city is a more affordable place to visit than other U.S. cities of its size, including San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. And if you visit in summer, you’ll have perfect weather for relaxing on the beaches of Lake Michigan, located in the heart of the city.

Depending on what you’re looking for, visiting the city between May and October could be your best bet, as winters can be very cold, with average temperatures ranging between 22 F and 37 F.

Best budget solo travel destination: Ljubljana, Slovenia

  • A highly affordable travel destination
  • Easy entrance requirements for U.S. citizens
  • Classic European architecture and dining options
  • Plenty of green spaces to lounge and relax
  • Doesn't have a strong nightlife culture
  • Crowds can be overwhelming during peak travel seasons

Why we chose it : Slovenia is one of the most affordable European countries, and Ljubljana is one of the country’s most beautiful destinations. It’s home to classic European cobblestone streets and its stunning architecture and exhibits can keep you busy for weeks without breaking your budget.

Ljubljana is an affordable European destination with beautiful green spaces and incredible architecture, including the Ljubljana Castle and the Robba Fountain. It’s also highly walkable and pedestrian-friendly, as car traffic is banned in the city center.

Hotels are cheaper here than in more popular destinations such as France or Italy, which is a big reason why Ljubljana is one of the best international places to travel . There are also many great affordable restaurants and open-air cafes.

U.S. citizens can remain in Slovenia for up to 90 days without a visa, making it easy to extend their stay with the money they save.

However, Ljubljana is not known for its nightlife, as many bars close earlier than elsewhere in Europe. Plus, it has become more popular in recent years, and crowds are abundant during peak seasons, especially the summer.

Other places to travel solo we considered

We compiled our list of the best places to travel alone by evaluating global destinations based on safety, affordability, cultural and historical sites and convenience, among other factors.

Although the following destinations didn’t make it into our top list, they’re still worth considering as you plan your travels.

Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Close to beautiful natural landmarks
  • It's possible to see the Northern Lights when conditions allow
  • Home to many museums and several Michelin-starred restaurants
  • More expensive than other popular travel destinations
  • The region's weather can be bleak
  • Long periods of darkness and sunlight can interfere with your sleep schedule

Reykjavik is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with stunning mountains and beaches everywhere you look. However, it’s an expensive destination and experiences prolonged periods of darkness and sunlight that may be difficult to adjust to.

  • Some of the best food in South America
  • Miles of beautiful coastline to explore
  • Friendly locals - many of whom speak at least some English
  • Travelers can suffer from altitude sickness in some popular attractions
  • The city is sprawling, which can increase travel times and make traffic worse

Lima is a beautiful South American destination with picturesque beaches and affordable accommodations. It’s also a foodie’s dream, with a wide variety of tasty local and international restaurants available at budget-friendly prices.

Just remember that traffic congestions are common and can make it hard to get around. Additionally, some travelers may experience altitude sickness in high-altitude locations like Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Knoxville, Tennessee

  • Has beautiful outdoor settings
  • Minimal traffic
  • Moderate prices for accommodations
  • There isn't as much to do in Knoxville as in other travel destinations
  • Public transportation options are limited

Knoxville is the third-largest city in Tennessee, but it maintains a small-town feel. It’s home to beautiful attractions, such as the Great Smoky Mountains and the World’s Fair Park, and has enough cultural exhibits and museums to keep you busy.

Nevertheless, there isn’t quite as much to do here as in other cities, and public transportation is comparatively limited.

Places to Travel Solo Guide

Traveling alone can be intimidating, but a little preparation can go a long way. This guide covers some of the best travel tips to help you plan your next solo trip.

Why travel solo?

As with everything, there are pros and cons to traveling alone.

Some of the benefits of solo travel include:

  • The ability to plan trips according to your schedule
  • Paying less for dining and experiences
  • Stepping out of your comfort zone and getting to know yourself better
  • Having more time to reflect and relax in peace

Of course, to enjoy your solo vacation to the fullest, practice general safety precautions. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, do some proper research before visiting new places and consider hiring a guide if you’re doing outdoor activities in remote locations.

How to travel alone

Traveling alone can be a wonderful experience. But it often requires more planning and initiative than group trips. The following tips for traveling alone should help you make the most of your next solo trip.

Research your travel destination extensively

The more research you do before visiting a destination, the more prepared you will be to enjoy it. Pay close attention to the following:

  • Climate : Be aware of the weather conditions at your destination to avoid potential hazards, pack the right gear and plan appropriate activities.
  • Top attractions : Plan your itinerary by mapping out the attractions you want to visit and checking their distance from your accommodations. This will help you create a realistic schedule and determine if you need to book transportation for any day trips.
  • Cost : Consider the average cost of accommodations, meals and attractions to create a realistic budget.
  • Public transportation : This is an important consideration, as visiting a destination with insufficient or unreliable public transportation translates into additional expenses.
  • Language barrier : Consider downloading translation apps or learning basic phrases in your destination’s native language if English isn’t widely spoken there.
  • Food : If you have any dietary restrictions, check the availability of suitable food options at your destination and plan your meals.

Stay connected with your friends and family

When traveling alone, keep your loved ones informed of where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing. That way, your family can call for help if they don’t hear back from you in a reasonable timeframe.

Depending on your destination, you may consider purchasing an international SIM card or an international phone plan with your existing carrier to text and call your people back home.

Finally, you can register your trip with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) through the U.S. State Department. STEP is a free service that allows you to receive automatic safety and travel updates from the U.S. embassy in the country you’re visiting. It also makes it easier for friends and family to reach you in an emergency.

Consider travel insurance

If you’ve spent quite a bit of money on non-refundable travel expenses and it hasn’t been that long since you made your initial trip deposit, consider travel insurance to safeguard your investment. A travel insurance policy can help you recoup a portion of pre-paid travel expenses if you cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason.

Travel medical insurance could also be worthwhile if you’re going on an extended trip, as it would cover some of your medical expenses in an emergency, including medical evacuation and repatriation. And some plans even include additional services like language support, which could be helpful if English isn’t widely spoken where you’re visiting.

If this sounds like something you’re interested in, check out our guide to the best travel insurance companies .

Try new things

Now that we’ve covered some of the most important things to do before leaving for a solo trip, let’s explore how to get as much enjoyment out of your travels as possible while you’re there. The best advice we can give you is to get out of your comfort zone and try new things.

If you genuinely want to experience everything other cultures have to offer, you can’t spend your days doing the same things you do at home. So take a chance and live as the locals do. You’ll be happy you did.

Interact with the locals

The best way to forget you’re traveling alone is to befriend the locals. Your new friends can keep you company, guide you to the best places in town (the ones that aren’t in any tourist guides) and help to make your trip more enjoyable overall.

Meeting locals is much easier to do now than before the Internet. A wide variety of online resources can connect you to local events and groups where you can meet people. Some of the best options for this include:

  • Facebook expat groups for the destination you’re visiting
  • The subreddit for your destination (such as r/Paris and r/Chicago)

Some professional and religious groups may have international meetups as well. This can be a fantastic way to meet locals with whom you already have something in common.

Take plenty of pictures (with you in them)

Last but not least, make sure you take plenty of pictures to share with your people back home. Landmarks can be great, but you should also be in some of the photos. Most people will happily snap pictures of you if you ask nicely.

What to do when traveling alone

Traveling alone can be one of the best experiences of your life or a challenge that quickly loses its appeal. To give yourself the best chance of having an ideal trip, remember the following strategies during your travels:

  • Be flexible : Flexibility is a must for solo travelers. You’ll have more fun if you take advantage of chance encounters and throw away your schedule when necessary.
  • Take group tours and classes : Just because you arrive at your destination alone doesn’t mean you must spend every minute there alone. Group tours and classes will help you meet people and give you a chance to socialize when you’re feeling lonely.
  • Stay in places that encourage talking : If you’re concerned about feeling lonely, consider staying at a hostel or bed and breakfast. Shared accommodations like these are more affordable than the best hotels and can be a great way to meet people.
  • Gather first-hand advice : You can use Reddit and other resources to read about the experiences other solo travelers have had at your destination. These firsthand accounts can alert you to problems you may not have considered otherwise and new opportunities for fun.
  • Sign up for free rewards programs : Airlines , hotel chains and third-party booking sites often have reward programs that help you save money if you’re a frequent traveler. You may also want to look into the best airline credit cards and best travel credit cards if you plan on traveling alone regularly.
  • Prioritize your safety : Traveling alone can make you a target, so prioritizing safety is important. Be proactive about telling others where you’ll be and take yourself out of situations you feel unsure about to enjoy your trip without incident.

Staying safe is a critical consideration for solo travelers. One way to do that is by avoiding reckless behavior, such as drinking excessively and venturing alone into places locals deem unsafe.

Take the time to thoroughly research your destination, share your travel plans with friends and family and prepare an emergency plan.

Finally, consider travel insurance. If something does happen while you’re traveling alone, it will provide financial support so you can go to the hospital without worrying about breaking your budget.

You could save up enough money to make the cost of travel insurance negligible by signing up for one of the best airline rewards programs .

Top Websites to Book Cheap Flights to Anywhere in the World

Top Websites to Book Cheap Flights to Anywhere in the World

Want to know where you can easily book cheap flights?

Many of us have tried using different strategies for budget airfares. But, in reality, prices depend on demand, not on the day or time you try to book a flight.

The only problem now is, with so many options, will you need a dozen tabs open to find the best ticket prices?

Unfortunately, this is certainly a possibility. There is no single website that consistently offers the lowest prices.

Luckily, you don’t have to suffer that time-consuming process anymore. We’ve done all the dirty work for you!

In this article, we’ll explore some of the top booking websites you can trust to book cheap flights to anywhere in the world.

The best sites to book cheap flights under $100

The web is brimming with different flight search engines. Aside from booking directly with one of the top airlines , the following sites will help you uncover the cheapest airfare prices.

1. Google Flights

google flights logo

Google Flights is just like any other flight search engine. You enter your travel dates, the number of passengers, and the class of service you desire. Once you click search, you’re given a multitude of options from different airlines initially sorted by the best flights available. It then shows the duration of the flight, number of stopovers, and available airlines.

If you don’t have any desired target date or location, Google Flights is a great option.

For starters, they have an ‘explore destination’ feature. This guides you to the cheapest airfares around the next six months from your starting point to other popular destinations.

It also has the following features:

Flexible calendar:.

This feature allows you to find the cheapest flights up to 11 months in advance. It does this by automatically adjusting the travel dates depending on your desired duration.

Price alert

This feature is best suited for individuals who are in no rush to travel. Google will send alerts to your Gmail when the prices of tickets increase or decrease.

Travel guide

This feature takes away all the stress of planning a vacation. Google provides the top places to visit when traveling to a certain location. It even provides the expected climate in a given month, available activities, and the average prices for hotels.

Greener flights

For every search made, Google highlights flights with airplanes with lower carbon emissions.

  • Doesn’t display prices of all online travel agencies (OTAs)
  • On rare occasions, it can show ghost flight schedules

expedia travel logo

Expedia is an online travel agent that helps you book and plan a worry-free vacation. Like Google Flights, Expedia has a flexible calendar to see if cheaper flights are available on certain dates.

Easy rebooking and cancellation of flights

There are two easy options when rebooking or canceling your flight on Expedia. You can either call their hotline or log in to your Expedia account and click on the itinerary page.

Bundled products

This feature gives you the luxury to find the best packages for your trip. It includes everything from accommodation and must-see tourist attractions to car rentals and airport transportation.

Expedia rewards

Expedia has a free membership program with three options: blue, silver, and gold.

With every booking (flight, hotel, cruise, car rental, or activity) done via their site, you collect trip elements. This helps you grow your reward points and reach higher membership levels for more perks.

To know more about their membership features and perks, click here .

  • Lacks customer service representatives
  • Unreliable cancellation policies
  • Displays third-party advertisements

3. Skyscanner

Skyscanner logo

Skyscanner is one of the best ways to book cheap flights. It is a simple, user-friendly website filled with features to ensure you save money on your next trip. Enter your desired location and dates, and it scours different airlines and online travel agencies to find the cheapest flights, car rentals, and hotels.

Price alerts

Sets an alert to your desired location for when fares increase or decrease.

Traveler reviews

Skyscanner makes sure to keep everything transparent. Travelers who book through their site can individually rate each experience on their trip. This makes it easier for you to mix and match the best services for a once in a lifetime experience.

Like Google Flights, this feature helps you filter for airplanes with lower carbon dioxide emissions for a more eco-friendly trip.

Everywhere search

View all available options that match your budget and preferred dates.

  • Unreliable OTAs
  • Displays advertisements
  • Occasionally displays ghost flight schedules
  • Outdated calendar for less-searched tourist destinations

4. Kayak

Top Websites to Book Cheap Flights to Anywhere in the World blog img

Kayak is a search engine designed to help travelers find the best journey options available. Once you submit your search, you can easily filter the results depending on your needs: number of stops, payment methods, airlines, and your preferred travel booking site.

Business mode

Kayak now offers a free ‘business mode’ feature for companies with frequent fliers. Once you submit a search, you can view your company’s policies to get flights approved at the touch of a button. It also allows you to avail of hotel corporate rates, and see which hotels have been recommended by your coworkers.

Available with every business membership, Kayak’s virtual assistant allows you to do even more: build itineraries, do online check-in, and share your trip with friends and family.

Real-time updates

This Kayak feature will keep you up-to-speed on any cancellations, delays, or gate changes on your flight.

Travel restrictions

It can be difficult to keep track of every country’s travel restrictions. Kayak’s latest travel restrictions feature shows you the entry requirements of every country depending on your starting point. What’s more, it also shows each country’s vaccination statistics.

  • Slow loading speed
  • Hotel search results rely heavily on third-party booking sites

Momondo is a branch of Booking Holdings Inc, the same company that manages Kayak. Similar to its famous counterpart, it is a metasearch engine offering flights, hotels, car rentals, and holiday packages. It also offers some of the features available on Kayak such as travel restriction details, price assistance, and trips.

Anywhere search

This feature allows flexible travelers to browse different locations that meet their budgets.

Momondo Places

This feature is available on a separate app which allows users to see recommendations even when offline. It helps users find the best bars, restaurants, and beaches without having to do all the research themselves.

Flight insights

This allows travelers to analyze data to find the cheapest flights. It shows the following:

  • Cheapest day to depart
  • Most affordable month to fly
  • Cheapest airline
  • How far ahead you should book
  • Most affordable time of day to fly

Price forecast

After every search, Momondo will include a price forecast of whether your desired date is the cheapest day to buy a ticket. It will provide you with notes saying ‘prices may soon drop’ or ‘now is a great time to book’.

  • Sometimes misleading prices (check the small print!)

Gideon Falter speaking in studio on the Good Morning Britain' TV show, 22 Apr 2024: he wears a dark jacket and open-necked white shirt and is seen against a backdrop of screens and images of London skyscrapers

Initial story about ‘openly Jewish’ incident not full picture, says ex-senior Met officer

Gideon Falter, the antisemitism campaigner involved, says Dal Babu’s comments go ‘far beyond victim-blaming’

An initial account of an exchange between a police officer and an antisemitism campaigner that sparked heavy criticism of Scotland Yard did not show the full picture, a former senior officer has said.

Footage released by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) last Friday showed its chief executive, Gideon Falter, being told by a police officer that his “openly Jewish” appearance risked antagonising pro-Palestinian marchers. This precipitated claims Falter was prevented from going about his business simply because he was a Jewish man in the vicinity of a pro-Palestinian demonstration.

But a longer version of the same exchange has since emerged on Sky News, showing the officer explaining that his concern was that he had seen Falter acting in a way that led him to believe he was trying to provoke a confrontation with marchers.

That fuller account showed “a totally different encounter to the one that Mr Falter has reported”, said the former Scotland Yard chief superintendent Dal Babu on Monday.

His comments came as the prime minister, Rishi Sunak, said he retained confidence in the Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, but the latter needed to rebuild “confidence and trust” with the Jewish community.

While Babu said the “openly Jewish” comment was “not acceptable”, he told BBC Breakfast that the longer clip showed Falter “attempting to go against the march, trying to push past the officers, and I think for 13 minutes the officers showed great restraint”.

Babu added: “They offered to take him to a crossing point, they offered to help him and the group he was with the opportunity to cross at a more appropriate place. So the narrative that’s been pushed for the past few days is not accurate.

“Personally, if I was policing that march, I would have been inclined to have arrested [Falter] for assault on a police officer and breach of the peace.”

Met police officer threatens antisemitism campaigner with arrest – video

In the shorter CAA version of the footage, Falter could be seen on the fringes of the march in central London earlier this month, wearing a kippah and trying to pass police officers so he could cross the demonstration’s path to get to the other side of the street.

An officer blocked his way, telling him: “You are quite openly Jewish, this is a pro-Palestinian march, I’m not accusing you of anything but I’m worried about the reaction to your presence.” Falter was also offered a police escort away and told that if he chose to stay put, he would be arrested for a “breach of peace” because his presence was antagonising in the context of the march.

The longer version shows the officer explaining to Falter that his approach was informed by the knowledge he had already deliberately walked out into the middle of the march and was therefore “looking to try and antagonise this”.

Addressing Babu’s comments, Falter said: “A former chief superintendent has even outrageously suggested that I assaulted a police officer and should have been arrested. This has now gone far beyond victim-blaming. These tactics are desperate, but they reveal the Met’s priorities.”

Falter has vowed to continue attending marches, telling ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “It’s not, for me, about these frontline officers. It’s about the decisions that have been made for six months now by Sir Mark Rowley , who has failed abjectly to stand up for Jewish Londoners and … he’s curtailed our rights and our ability to walk around the street, in favour of letting these huge groups of protesters do what they want to do.”

Ahead of the next march on Saturday, Falter said: “After this all happened, I felt it’s actually very important that Jews feel that they can walk the streets.”

Rowley has been summoned to a meeting with the home secretary, James Cleverly, and the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, on Monday afternoon. The home secretary will press Rowley on whether the force is using all its powers under the Public Order Act – such as the power to impose conditions on the marches. The Met has insisted it has been using the law as vigorously as the legislation allows.

The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors anti-Jewish abuse and attacks and provides security for UK Jewish communities, said: “We see the extra support the police have given to our community, we know why it is needed and we know that it is usually done with the professionalism that everyone expects, without it making the headlines.

“Despite all the good work, there have also been mistakes which set everything backwards and stick in the public mind as further showing how bad things are right now. This latest case fits that profile, with the context and detail lost in the heat of controversy. An individual officer tried to do the right thing but ended up making things worse in a very difficult moment.”

The Met commissioner will also meet leaders of Jewish groups on Monday.

Very good restaurant, very good food and the staff was very good. However do not expect to have the best view of moscow. Yes the view is nice. But not as exeptionnal as the Ostankino TV tower. The restaurant is very comfortable and the prices are correct. I will definitly go there again.

Nothing spectacular for the top floor restaurant of the Cosmos Hotel. Service was very slow. Only one type of glassed red wine, food quality low, can't pay by credit card. Windows so dirty you can't see the skyline. Sadly we were seated in a smoking area after asking for non-smoking, after two tables of smokers arrived we nearly choked - my husband had a heated discussion with one of the young female smokers. The maitre de then moved the smokers and left us with the smelly room so we left soon after. Much better restaurants down stairs - try the excellent sushi restaurant!

It sould be panoramic restaurant... Unfortunately windows are so dirty that you will not enjoy the wiev. Very decent food and problem with any other payment than CASH ;-(

I had visited the web site for this restaurant and sadly I was a bit let down when we visited in person. the food was good the view was not so bad. i'm a bit puzzled why they only accept cash payments for a rather high priced menu. this meant that we had to go all the way downstairs to get cash. we visited in the evening before the dance show and we were the only ones there.

7 ways to travel more sustainably.

Sustainable travel can be fun, rewarding and not at all challenging

Sustainable travel is surging in popularity, but what does it mean? The vague term can refer to traveling in a way that’s conscientious of the environment and local communities, leaving less of an impact on a destination and perhaps even bettering the location in the process. Sustainable tourism, in many ways a reaction to overtourism, helps protect the planet, to ensure destinations are liveable and worth visiting for years to come. And while travel can certainly takes its toll, creating carbon emissions, waste and more, responsible tourism is an essential step in protecting the planet.

Sustainable Travel Tips

Responsible tourism helps the environment by limiting ecological impact, supporting indigenous wildlife, respecting cultural heritage, and not taking away from a destination as a visitor, be it removing a shell from a beach or littering on a hiking trail. Plenty of responsible travel itineraries are easily replicable, but many trips can be adapted to be more sustainable. There are so many ways, big and small, to travel more responsibly and sustainably. Here’s how to start:

1. TSA-Friendly Doesn’t Need To Be Earth Hostile

You can buy single use and tiny versions of pretty much every care product these days, but do you actually need to? Opt for refillable travel bottles to decant your normal products into, and you’ll always have TSA-friendly bottles of shampoo, lotion, whatever you need at the ready. If you prefer to travel without liquids, consider switching to bars of shampoo and conditioner toothpaste powder and other products, which are eco-friendly wherever you are.

Planning ahead can be a major factor in sustainable travel

2. Opt For Public Transit

Public transportation — buses, trains, light rail, etc. — is always more sustainable than a private ride. If possible, use public transit to get to and from your destination and learn your destination’s public transit system to navigate while you explore. Not only will you likely save money as well as lower your carbon footprint, you’ll get a taste of how locals live. If public transit isn’t an option, consider booking shared rides to the airport and excursions, or renting an electric or hybrid vehicle if driving solo is the only option.

Huawei s Pura 70 Ultra Beats iPhone With Pioneering New Feature

Sh gun episode 10 review a powerful finale but not what i was expecting, the trump media stock price (djt) is about to adjust down by -22.7%, 3. pack for low waste experiences.

A bit of planning ahead can save considerable landfill waste. Bringing a reusable coffee cup for morning coffee runs and reusable water bottle will hopefully cut down the amount of single-use items you purchase on the go. Other easy to pack items including a reusable travel utensil set, reusable straws and reusable earplugs can help avoid creating more waste on the road. If you’re someone who discards beach reads, consider switching to an e-reader. Pack tote bags to carry souvenirs or other items purchased on the road that won’t require disposable plastic bags.

4. Eat Conscientiously

Eating local is the best way for your diet to support local eco-systems. Not only does dining at independent, small businesses (e.g. not chains), support local business people, but can often have lower environmental impact than major franchised restaurants that ship ingredients and supplies across the country. Making lower impact choices, including eating mostly plant-based, when possible, can also make travel a bit greener. If you don’t have anything to do with leftovers, consider ordering with a bit more restriction so you aren’t creating an excess of food waste.

Local culinary experiences can be healthy, fulfilling and sustainable

5. Book A Sustainable Hotel

Staying at a property dedicated to sustainability can make a big impact, especially by showing the travel industry that this is a priority for hospitality. Hotels are offered various certifications to prove their sustainable status, which can be achieved as a remote eco-lodge or luxury property in a major city. Several hotels are seeking LEED certification , the Green Hotels Association has a collection of vendors who prioritize sustainability, and the Leading Hotels of the World has a sustainability collection of five star properties.

6. Buy Carbon Offsets

While we technically can’t undo the damage we cause to the environment, there are initiatives to at least mitigate it. Carbon offsets allow consumers to compensate for their carbon footprint by funding projects that reduce carbon dioxide pollution. CoolEffect.org can help you decide how much to give, based on trip itinerary and logistics. For example, to offset air travel, a roundtrip, 6-hour flight would add about 1.89 tons of CO2 per passenger, and $31.17 of carbon offsets would help mitigate that.

Some airlines offer the option to purchase carbon offsets alongside airfare

7. Slow Down Your Travel

Slow travel is a buzzword that’s emerged in the 2020s, when work and leisure travel aka bleisure have melded more than ever, and the concept of working and even socializing remotely is totally normalized. Rather than a quick jaunt back and forth, slow travel emphasizes taking your time with tourism, be it living in a rental property for a month and enjoying the sights on the weekends, going backpacking, biking or hiking for an extended off the grid period, or traveling via train instead of air. Slow tourism has been proven to have a positive environmental impact .

This card's insurance benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty protection, roadside dispatch and rental car collision and theft coverage (secondary in the U.S.).

  • Purchase protection
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

When you have a Chase card that unlocks the ability to transfer Chase points to hotel and airline partners (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) , it increases the value of the Freedom Flex. So this isn't only a strong standalone rewards credit card , but it has synergies with other cards.

How to complete a Chase balance transfer

Chase typically charges a balance transfer fee from 3% to 5% with a $5 minimum. Before you complete a balance transfer , be sure the interest you save will outweigh the fee.

There are several ways to do a balance transfer with Chase. One of the best and easiest options is to complete a balance transfer when you apply for a card. When you do this, you'll be able to make the most out of your intro APR because any 0% interest timeframe you qualify for begins when you open the card.

If you want to perform a balance transfer with a Chase card you already have, you'll need to log in to your account and follow these steps:

  • Click "Pay & Transfer"
  • Then click on the "Transfer" dropdown menu
  • Select "Card balance transfers"

You can then select any of your Chase cards from a dropdown menu and see what balance transfer offers are available.

Are Chase balance transfers worth it?

When you make a balance transfer, you'll generally pay a fee of 3% to 5% of the balance. To determine whether a balance transfer is worth it, calculate how much you would save in interest compared to how much you'd pay in transfer fees.

What is one disadvantage of a 0% interest balance transfer card?

Aside from the balance transfer fees, the biggest downside to a balance transfer is you'll have the same amount of credit card debt as before. If you don't have a plan, or the resources, to pay off your debt before the intro APR expires, you'll be stuck paying interest once again.

Do balance transfers hurt your credit?

A balance transfer doesn't directly hurt your credit score and could help improve your credit if you're able to pay down your debt. However, you'll want to keep in mind that your credit score will temporarily dip when you apply for new credit (including a balance transfer card).

Bottom line

The top balance transfer cards Chase issues offer intro APR periods of 15 to 18 months, and these intro APR offers also apply to purchases, making them even more useful. If you're interested in paying less interest , these are some of the best offers available. When you're in credit card debt, your primary focus should be repayment, not earning rewards, but the fact that some of the cards on this list earn rewards is a nice bonus.

Trump is funneling campaign money into cash-strapped businesses. Experts say it looks bad.

Donald Trump’s main 2024 White House campaign fundraising operation sharply increased spending at the former president's properties in recent months, funneling money into his businesses at a time when he is facing serious legal jeopardy and desperately needs cash.

Trump’s joint fundraising committee wrote three checks in February and one in March to his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, totaling $411,287 and another in March to Trump National Doral Miami for $62,337, according to a report filed to the Federal Election Commission this week.

Federal law and FEC regulations allow donor funds to be spent at a candidate’s business so long as the campaign pays fair market value, experts say. Trump has been doing it for years , shifting millions in campaign cash into his sprawling business empire to pay for expenses such as using his personal aircraft for political events, rent at Trump Tower and events at his properties, which has included hotels and private clubs.

While the practice is legal, some campaign finance experts believe it raises ethical concerns when a candidate is generating personal revenue off running for office.

“When voters see something like this happening it contributes to their distrust of the political system and their elected officials' motives,” said Shanna Ports, senior legal counsel with the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit government accountability group.

Trump faces huge legal costs amid multiple civil and criminal cases

The money Trump’s campaign is spending at his businesses could help the former president as he faces a big cash crunch.

Trump has been hit with a pair of large financial judgements after losing two civil lawsuits.

He posted a $91.6 million bond in a defamation case brought by the writer E. Jean Carroll , and a $175 million bond in a fraud case involving falsifying business records. The New York attorney general is challenging whether the deal Trump made to post the larger bond payment is financially sound.

The payments Trump’s campaign has made to his businesses are small compared to his large court-ordered financial judgements, but have been growing in recent months.

The Trump campaign and affiliated political committees paid businesses owned by Trump at least $4.9 million since the start of 2023, according to an analysis by USA TODAY. Most of that money – $4.1 million – went to TAG Air, Inc. for air travel.

Trump lists TAG Air, Inc among his assets on his latest financial disclosure required of presidential candidates, with a value of between $5 million and $25 million. It operates his private aircraft, nicknamed Trump Force One.

Trump's various campaign committees and a super PAC controlled by his supporters also spent at least $809,000 at his properties since the beginning of last year.

Campaign spending at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Doral in Miami

The bulk of the campaign spending at Trump's properties since the start of 2023 — $663,000 — has been at Mar-a-Lago, and most of it occurred in February. It’s not clear what events the money went toward.

A Trump spokeswoman did not respond to specific questions about the campaign spending at his properties but instead sent a statement attacking President Joe Biden.

Other GOP candidates also have been spending considerable campaign cash at Trump properties.

Ohio Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno's campaign spent $109,000 on "event catering" at Mar-a-Lago in April, December and January of 2023, records show. Trump endorsed Moreno in December . Moreno won the primary in March and will face three-term Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in November.

Nevada U.S. Senate candidate Jim Marchant's campaign spent about $67,000 at Mar-a-Lago on "event venue rental and catering" in November and December. Trump backed Marchant in his unsuccessful bid to be Nevada's secretary of state in 2022. Marchant is now seeking to unseat first-term Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen.

A PAC called Giuliani Defense spent $2,400 on fundraising expenses and food at Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey in January. That PAC has spent $540,000 on legal fees, according to FEC filings. Trump hosted a fundraiser for Rudy Giuliani at Bedminster in September to help with the former New York mayor's legal costs, which stem in part from the criminal charges Giuliani faces in Fulton County, Georgia, for trying to help Trump overturn the 2020 election.

Trump hosted a party at Mar-a-Lago on March 5 with a large group of supporters to watch the Super Tuesday primary election results from 16 states. He also held a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago in October that drew hundreds of supporters, including U.S. Reps Marjorie Taylor Green and Byron Donalds, Texas attorney general Ken Paxton and the actress Roseanne Barr.

Another fundraiser at Trump National Doral in March was hosted by former Ambassador Carlos Trujillo, with the money benefiting the Make America Great Again, Inc. super PAC.

The Trump Save America Joint Fundraising Committee, which raises money for Trump’s campaign and his Save America leadership PAC accounted for the majority of the spending at Trump properties, with other expenses paid for by Trump’s main campaign committee, the MAGA Inc. super PAC and Save America.

Concerns about Trump's business conflicts go back to 2016 election

Questions about how Trump’s businesses have benefited from his political career have swirled around him throughout the former president’s three campaigns and his four years in the White House.

Under pressure to avoid potential conflicts of interest between his role as president and his vast business dealings, Trump declared after winning the 2016 election that he wouldn't cut any "new deals." The incoming president also put his two adult sons in charge of the family business, which was controlled by a trust that critics said didn't have strong enough requirements to prevent potential ethical conflicts.

Lawsuits accusing Trump of violating the emoluments clauses in the Constitution during his presidency were unsuccessful. Critics said those seeking to influence Trump's administration funneled money into his businesses, including a hotel near the White House in Washington, D.C. that has since been sold and rebranded as a Waldorf Astoria.

America Democracy Legal Fund filed a complaint with the FEC in 2016 alleging “Mr. Trump is using funds from his presidential campaign to further his business and personal interests." The complaint was dismissed, but concerns remain in the minds of some campaign finance experts.

"People should be running for office because they want to serve the public, not because they want to enrich themselves," Ports said. "So the fact that campaigns are allowed to pay the candidate’s business raises those concerns. While legal, it creates kind of a negative impression of the election system."

Richard Briffault, a legislation professor at Columbia Law School, said Trump's use of campaign funds at his businesses may not be illegal, but it's "a little bit dicey."

Luckily for flyers, it’s gonna be May very soon.

“May and September are great months to travel, as they’re before and after peak summer here in the US,” flight attendant Bernice Padilla, 29, confided to SWNS .

“You have less crowds and more affordable prices, but the weather is still nice,” she continued. “Every country has their specific shoulder season, so I recommend doing some research before booking.”

Padilla, a flight attendant for six years who has visited 44 countries, is sharing tricks of the travel trade — from flights to book to countries to explore.

The Dallas-based flight attendant , who boasts 144,300 followers on TikTok , said that while Europe is a hot destination for American travelers, it’s best to book holidays in “overlooked” destinations.

Bernice Padilla, a flight attendant for six years who has visited 44 countries, is sharing tricks of the travel trade — from flights to book to countries to explore.

“Everyone loves to go to London, Rome, Paris and Barcelona,” she explained. “ I am going to Argentina in a few weeks, for example. I think it is good to book places that aren’t as popular with tourists.”

She added: “Even [if] people are still wanting to visit Europe, there are so many places that aren’t as popular, like Albania and countries on the coast.”

Padilla also revealed her preference for booking the earliest possible flight to avoid delays.

“ If there are any delays , it ends up being a domino effect. Say there is a delay in California due to the weather — then my flight here can’t take off until that flight takes off,” she reasoned. “Everything trickles down, whereas if you fly early, your plane will be there from the night before.”

And in Guatapé, Colombia. She prefers "overlooked" destinations.

And when it comes to packing, Padilla recommends traveling with carry-on luggage , especially in the summer.

If that’s not possible, she relies on compression packing cubes .

“I still have a problem with overpacking, but I try not to overpack as much,” she confessed. “I always travel with compression cubes — that way you can fit more into your suitcase.”

Her travel must-haves include a reusable water bottle , a sweater or blanket , a pen to fill out any forms that might be needed at arrival, noise-canceling headphones , and a portable charger .

Inside the Late-Night Parties Where Hawaii Politicians Raked In Money

After the state passed a law barring government contractors from donating to politicians, fund-raising parties showed just how completely the reform effort failed.

A statue of Queen Liliuokalani outside the Hawaii Capitol building.

By Blaze Lovell ,  Eric Sagara and Irene Casado Sanchez

The reporters examined campaign contributions and government contracts for this article, part of a series about loopholes in Hawaii’s pay-to-play laws, for The Times’s Local Investigations Fellowship .

For the better part of a decade, some of Hawaii’s most powerful people huddled together at late-night parties in a cramped second-floor office where lobbyists and executives seeking government contracts lined up to drop cash and checks into a metal lockbox.

That was the entry fee for these extraordinary political fund-raisers. Inside the office, just a short walk from the State Capitol in downtown Honolulu, dozens of guests were served sushi prepared by professional chefs and unlimited beer and liquor.

At the end of the night, Wesley Yonamine, the host and a high-ranking airport official, would, together with the politicians, pop open the box and dole out campaign contributions according to a list of pledges obtained before each event.

As described by attendees, a typical party could bring in thousands of dollars in donations, giving some elected officials almost half their annual campaign haul in a single night.

It was not supposed to work this way. In 2005, in response to a series of scandals, Hawaii passed a law that barred government contractors from giving money to politicians. It was billed as one of the nation’s most ambitious efforts to end pay-to-play in contracting and designed to fundamentally change the political culture of a state steeped in corruption.

But legislators wrote a loophole into the law, effectively gutting it: The ban would apply only to donations from the actual corporate entities that got contracts, but not to their owners, employees or any related businesses.

Mr. Yonamine’s parties illustrated just how completely the reform effort failed.

Today, Hawaii is reeling from its latest government corruption scandal, with state officials accused of taking bribes from Milton Choy, a prominent businessman who wore a wire for at least a year as part of a deal with the federal government.

But that is just one glimpse of the role money plays in politics here.

An examination of Hawaii’s contracting system by The New York Times and Honolulu Civil Beat offers a detailed look at the workings of a state known for favoritism and patronage, a culture where big companies with ties to politicians have historically dominated.

“Pay-to-play is woven into the DNA of the statehood of Hawaii,” said Camron Hurt, director of Common Cause Hawaii, a watchdog group. He pointed to the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom that led to an “oligarchy” of businessmen, sugar barons and large landowners lasting decades. The industries involved had close ties to the ruling political parties well into the 1960s and 1970s, when Hawaii’s campaign finance regulations were written.

A Times and Civil Beat analysis of campaign donations and contracts found that since 2006 — the year the pay-to-play law went into place — people tied to government contractors have provided a remarkable percentage of the money fueling state and local politics. They have given state and local Hawaii politicians more than $24 million: about one-fifth of all donations made. Of that total, $6 million has come from people tied to just 15 companies.

Most donors rarely mentioned their employers in public records designed to bring transparency to political donations. But The Times and Civil Beat, reviewing hundreds of thousands of campaign records, linked more than 28,000 of the donations to contractors.

The analysis almost certainly captured only some contributions, in part because the state could not provide a full list of contractors. In fact, record keeping is so poor that some vendor information is collected only on paper, while electronic records are riddled with errors. Several of the state’s biggest agencies did not respond to repeated requests for financial records or said they could not find them.

The examination found more than a dozen examples over the past six years of people tied to contractors donating to political campaigns in the months before key decisions led to deals.

Well-timed donations from people linked to contractors

When some companies were on the verge of winning big government contracts, people connected to them donated larger amounts of money to the relevant officials.

Some of the elected officials who could crack down on favoritism are themselves benefiting from the lack of oversight. At least a dozen legislators have worked for or co-owned companies that won state contracts, some profiting in ways that have not been previously reported.

The Times contacted every politician and campaign donor named in this article. Most of those who responded said there was no link between campaign donations and the contracts they won.

Mr. Yonamine acknowledged hosting the fund-raisers but declined requests for a detailed interview. In a brief statement, he denied influencing any contract awards and said he was “raised to give back to the community.”

“It’s what drove me to work in public service for 36 years,” he said. “Helping those seeking elected office by supporting their fund-raisers is an extension of these values and an important aspect of civic engagement afforded citizens under the law.”

Political donations are regulated by the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission, which has a staff of just five people who are responsible for tracking tens of millions of dollars in campaign contributions.

Gary Kam, the commission’s general counsel, acknowledged that the law restricted only a small portion of donations. Executives can give freely, and if bundled together, in greater amounts than if their company donated on its own. Expanding the law to cover those people is the “key to it all,” he said.

Many people charged with campaign finance violations have been allowed to keep giving — and to keep getting contracts, The Times and Civil Beat found.

Michael Matsumoto, president of the engineering firm SSFM International, pleaded no contest to money laundering involving campaign funds in 2003. He has since contributed $130,000 to a range of politicians, and the company continues to win public work. He declined to comment.

The New York Times would like to hear from readers who want to share messages and materials with our journalists.

People with ties to another major contributor are on trial for corruption. In 2022, federal prosecutors accused the chief executive of the engineering firm Mitsunaga & Associates and four of its employees of bribing Keith Kaneshiro, who was the top prosecutor in Honolulu, with campaign contributions to pursue a criminal case against a former employee. The defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Dennis Mitsunaga, the chief executive, encouraged others, including family members and people with ties to his company, to donate to candidates, his lawyers said in court. People linked to the firm have donated heavily to a range of politicians, and the firm has won at least $49 million in state contracts since 2011.

All contracts awarded to the firm “were based on merit,” said Nina Marino, a lawyer for Mr. Mitsunaga.

Mr. Kaneshiro’s lawyer argued that campaign contributions made to gain access to politicians were “perfectly legal.”

Other states have been more successful in curbing big campaign contributions from companies seeking government work. In Connecticut, for example, a ban on donations from corporate officers with contracts has wiped out a large swath of campaign funds, according to Joshua Foley, a lawyer for the State Elections Enforcement Commission.

While contractors in Hawaii account for about 20 percent of campaign donations, in Connecticut “the percentage is zero,” Mr. Foley said.

Following recent corruption scandals, the Hawaii Legislature convened a watchdog panel to recommend new laws to improve government transparency. But lawmakers have so far refused to adopt some of the panel’s most meaningful corrective measures.

Notably, bills that would have closed the loophole in the law by prohibiting campaign contributions from company owners, officers and their immediate family members have failed year after year, including in the current legislative session.

Government contractors linked to the most campaign donations

Since 2006, more than $6 million of the campaign money for state and local races in Hawaii has come from people associated with just 15 contractors.

Timely Donations

People tied to big contractors gave more than $1,000 on average — nearly twice as much as political donors who had no obvious government connections, the analysis found. They were also twice as likely to give the maximum for some offices.

Often, their campaign contributions seemed to go to the right people at the right time.

Take R.M. Towill Corporation, a large engineering firm where employees in 2003 were fined for illegal campaign contributions. In the months leading up to the 2022 legislative session, R.M. Towill executives donated to the campaigns of only two state senators — Stanley Chang and Donovan Dela Cruz. Later that year, the two senators were among the co-sponsors of a law that ultimately led to R.M. Towill getting a $500,000 surveying contract.

Mr. Chang said in a recent interview that, besides general discussions of policy, he never talked about legislation or contracts with employees of R.M. Towill. Mr. Dela Cruz did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

In a statement, R.M. Towill’s president, Greg Hiyakumoto, said that company employees supported candidates who pushed for new infrastructure and sustainable development, both of which were part of its mission.

A handful of powerful lawmakers who control vast sums of government money have been among the largest recipients of campaign donations from executives tied to big contractors and their families. Leaders of the influential House Finance and Senate Ways and Means committees, who direct billions of dollars in public works projects every year, have received more than $482,000 in such donations since 2018.

Representative Kyle Yamashita, the current finance chairman, who spent years overseeing the House’s capital improvements budget, has received more than $44,000 in political contributions from people tied to big contractors. Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke, who previously led the House Finance Committee, received more than $107,000, while former Representative Ty Cullen, the vice chairman until 2022, got $22,100.

Mr. Dela Cruz has received more than $239,000 in campaign donations from people tied to big contractors since he became Ways and Means chairman in 2018. Former Senator Gil Keith-Agaran, vice chairman until October, got $70,000 during the same time period.

Politicians who raised the most money from people tied to contractors

Some powerful politicians in Hawaii drew a fourth or more of their state and local campaign donations since 2006 from people with ties to government contractors.

In April 2023, the Senate Ways and Means Committee, led by Mr. Dela Cruz, budgeted for the purchase of a Maui hotel to convert into affordable housing and a school. That created a windfall for the law firm Starn O’Toole Marcus & Fisher, which got a $450,000 contract to do legal work on the deal. Two of the firm’s directors had recently donated a combined $3,000 to Mr. Dela Cruz and Gov. Josh Green’s campaigns.

One of the directors, Ivan M. Lui-Kwan, contributed another $2,000 to the governor’s campaign as the bill awaited his signature, and another $1,000 after he approved the budget. Mr. Lui-Kwan and Duane Fisher, a partner at the firm, each donated $1,000 to his campaign about two weeks before the contract was awarded.

Mr. Lui-Kwan said donations made by him and his colleagues had no bearing on state contracts. He said they made it a point to never bring up such work at political fund-raisers.

The governor said staff members involved with procurement didn’t communicate with him. “We adopted this approach to avoid any potential conflicts or concerns,” Mr. Green said in a statement.

People tied to big contractors have targeted local races, too.

In December 2021, Goodfellow Bros., one of Maui’s largest building firms, won a $4.6 million contract to expand a local landfill. It was the lowest bidder. The project was approved for funding in 2020 by the mayor at the time, Michael Victorino, and the County Council.

Afterward, executives and their family members gave around $34,000 in campaign contributions to the mayor and to council members, making them among the biggest donors in Maui County.

Goodfellow Bros. said in a statement that its employees could donate to campaigns so long as they did not give in the company’s name.

Alice Lee, chairwoman of the County Council, said that Maui-based companies like Goodfellow Bros. “generally support candidates who support a stable economy, public health and safety and affordable housing.”

Doing Double Duty

In Hawaii, legislators serve part time and can hold outside jobs, which can increase the risk that they will face conflicts of interest. Nevertheless, they are among the highest-paid part-time lawmakers in the country, earning an annual state salary of about $72,000.

An examination of their financial interests found that a dozen of them were employees, directors or co-owners of companies that had won contracts. Since 2006, those companies have gotten at least $56 million in state deals, according to Hawaii’s contract database.

Disclosure records show that Senate President Ron Kouchi earns between $50,000 and $100,000 annually working for his brother’s disposal company on Kauai, which is the only provider of trash services to agencies on that island.

Representative David Alcos III works as a subcontractor on state projects. Representative Micah Aiu is a lawyer at Nan Inc., one of the state’s biggest contractors, which won at least $39 million in projects last year. They have said they are not directly involved in their companies’ contracts.

Mr. Dela Cruz, the Ways and Means chairman, seems to have actually done hands-on work for a state contract: He was the project manager for a $224,000 State Health Department contract with DTL, a communications firm where he was co-owner and vice president.

The State Health Department, which awarded the contract in 2018 for work on a vaccine campaign, said it did not know Mr. Dela Cruz was an owner.

Jason Antonio, a principal at DTL, said in an email that Mr. Dela Cruz was not a project manager and was not involved in the immunization project. But in its proposal, which was submitted to the Health Department in 2017, DTL listed Mr. Dela Cruz as the project manager who would oversee the work on behalf of the firm.

Ronald Balajadia, the department’s immunization chief, said he mostly worked with two other DTL employees and did not recall interacting with Mr. Dela Cruz.

DTL was the only firm to bid on the contract. After selling his ownership interest in the company in late 2020, Mr. Dela Cruz continued receiving money from the firm for consulting services, according to his 2022 financial disclosure.

A Box Full of Campaign Donations

The clearest example of how contractors and politicians regularly circumvented the reforms were the parties hosted by Mr. Yonamine, the former head of visitor information for Hawaii’s airports.

Mr. Yonamine wasn’t directly involved in awarding contracts, but his gatherings provided a casual setting where executives could be introduced to lawmakers and state employees who selected winners, according to attendees.

The parties started as early as 2014 at Mr. Yonamine’s private office in Honolulu, according to campaign finance records, which lists dates and locations where political fund-raisers are held. They moved to the Pagoda Hotel there in 2019 and continued until at least 2020.

Lawmakers who benefited from the parties said Mr. Yonamine provided the venues while campaigns sometimes invited guests.

Attendees would stand chatting along the walls of the office, or later, on a spacious rooftop balcony at the hotel. The guests, sometimes more than 100 at the hotel, said they would discuss legislation, as well as contracts at the airports. Businesses seeking airport work frequently donated to a range of politicians around the time of those fund-raisers. They described the parties on the condition of anonymity because they work for the state or have business relationships with contractors they don’t want to jeopardize. No one, including Mr. Yonamine, denies they took place.

One of the most prominent guests was Mr. Choy, a major political donor and government contractor who would later be sentenced to more than three years in prison for bribing officials. He and his associates donated more than $28,000 to political campaigns around the time of the parties.

By 2020, Mr. Choy was wearing a wire and actively recording meetings to aid federal investigators.

No evidence has emerged that Mr. Choy’s contributions at the parties were illegal or connected to his bribery scheme.

Many guests did work at the airports, a constant source of multimillion dollar contracts.

At least 59 companies competed for airport contracts between 2014 and 2020. But nearly half the airports’ 153 professional services contracts went to just 14 companies. Executives from those firms all donated around the time of Mr. Yonamine’s parties.

Current and former heads of the division overseeing most of the airport design and engineering contracts did not respond to requests for comment.

The contracts were worth a combined total of more than $131 million, according to the state’s Department of Transportation.

These professional services contracts are for design or consulting jobs, and winners are selected based on their qualifications or proposals rather than just their price. The rules tend to give public officials more leeway to choose a company based on favoritism.

Executives at firms that won airport contracts donated a combined $101,000 around the time of the parties, according to campaign finance records, which show when checks were cashed and not when they were given. Candidates raised a total of more than $470,000.

When presented with The Times and Civil Beat’s findings, Ford Fuchigami, then transportation director and now head of the Airports Division, said he could not comment on the awarding of contracts because he was not in charge of selecting the winners. Mr. Fuchigami said he did not recall attending the parties, though records show he donated around the time of a party in 2019. He said he did not know what the state’s rules were for employees like Mr. Yonamine who were politically active or for officials who attended political gatherings.

“What you do on your personal time is what you do on your personal time,” he said.

The fund-raising parties do not appear to have violated the state’s ethics laws.

Robert Harris, director of the Hawaii State Ethics Commission, said there were generally no prohibitions on political activity during off-hours as long as state employees did not use any state resources.

Other lawmakers who received campaign money around the time of Mr. Yonamine’s parties were Ms. Luke, the lieutenant governor; former Gov. David Ige; Mr. Kouchi, the Hawaii Senate president; and former Mayor Kirk Caldwell of Honolulu, according to fund-raising documents.

Mr. Caldwell and Mr. Kouchi did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Mr. Ige said he mostly remembered seeing Transportation Department employees at Mr. Yonamine’s office but did not recall recognizing contractors.

Mr. Yonamine — who has a certain renown because his uncle Wally Yonamine was a famous athlete — is a figure in local sports. In 2018, one year after he was named varsity baseball coach at Pearl City High School, state lawmakers, some of whom received campaign contributions from his parties, approved $3 million in funding to convert the field from grass to artificial turf.

As Mr. Yonamine spoke from the refurbished field at an opening ceremony in 2022, a Hawaiian priest sprinkled rainwater on home plate.

“Thank you to all who helped make our dreams come true,” Mr. Yonamine said.

How the Numbers Were Calculated

The Times and Civil Beat examined hundreds of thousands of campaign contributions and more than 70,000 state contracts to draw connections between vendors and their donations to political races. The analysis revealed that nearly 20 percent of all campaign contributions since 2006 have come from people tied to companies doing business with the state and local governments.

This number is likely an underestimate because the data is incomplete. Records were obtained from the Hawaii Awards & Notices Data System , which tracks who won state contracts, but a 2021 audit found that only 40 percent of all state contracts awarded that year were posted. It’s not clear if the problem applies to other years.

Reporters requested and reviewed check registers to verify the total payments to vendors from departments. Some departments did not respond to public records requests, including those with large numbers of high-value contracts, such as the Education and Transportation Departments.

The gaps in state and county contracting data and check registers made it difficult to determine just how much money vendors actually received. Published amounts were confirmed with source documents or contracting departments.

Contractors were matched against the names of companies, their executives and employees in a database of campaign contributions maintained by the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission. Donations from spouses and relatives of contractor executives were also included in the count when possible. Spouses and relatives were determined based on people who shared the same last name and address as the main contributor. In some cases spouses were jointly listed as contributors.

The analysis focused on vendors who provide legal, consulting, engineering and construction services. Contracts and contributions for subsidiaries were attributed to their parent companies. Universities and other public agencies with government contracts were excluded from the analysis. Organizations that may have other lobbying interests — such as the Hawaii Association of Realtors — were also excluded.

Contributions made at events hosted by Mr. Yonamine were identified by searching for all contributions made to participating candidates within one week of the parties. The Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission requires that contributions be deposited within seven days of receipt.

An earlier version of a picture caption with this article misstated the amount Milton Choy and his associates donated to political campaigns around the time of fund-raising parties hosted by Wesley Yonamine. As the article correctly noted, they donated more than $28,000, not more than $30,000.
