Why should I buy Travel Insurance for visiting Armenia?

Armenia travel insurance is a prudent coverage choice.

Travel insurance for visiting Armenia, or any international destination for that matter, can be beneficial for several reasons:

Medical Coverage: Travel insurance typically provides coverage for medical emergencies while you’re abroad. If you were to fall ill or get injured during your trip to Armenia, having travel insurance could help cover medical expenses, including hospital stays, doctor’s fees, and medication costs. This is particularly important as healthcare costs can be high in foreign countries, and your domestic health insurance might not cover you abroad.

Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Travel insurance can reimburse you for non-refundable expenses if your trip gets canceled or interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances such as a sudden illness, a family emergency, or adverse weather conditions. This can include expenses like flights, accommodations, and prepaid tours or activities.

Lost or Delayed Luggage: If your luggage gets lost, stolen, or delayed during your journey to Armenia, travel insurance can provide reimbursement for necessary items you need to purchase in the interim, such as clothing and toiletries.

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: In the event of a serious medical emergency or a natural disaster, travel insurance can cover the costs of emergency evacuation to the nearest adequate medical facility or repatriation to your home country.

Travel Assistance Services: Many travel insurance policies also offer 24/7 travel assistance services, providing you with access to emergency assistance, medical referrals, and help with language barriers or lost travel documents.

Peace of Mind: Travel insurance provides peace of mind knowing that you’re financially protected against unexpected events that could disrupt or derail your trip to Armenia.

While Armenia is a beautiful destination with plenty to offer, unforeseen circumstances can arise during travel, and having travel insurance can mitigate the financial risks associated with these uncertainties. It’s essential to carefully review the terms and coverage of any travel insurance policy to ensure it meets your specific needs and provides adequate protection for your trip.

When purchasing a contract, the insured party chooses one of the partner medical institutions to their preference and makes use of the services provided by that institution throughout the contract period.

When clients sign their travel insurance cover contract, they learn the insurance terms and are given the contacts of the support agency. Cases should be reported by calling the listed numbers and the instructions of the support company should be followed.

Another option is to contact NAIRI INSURANCE through Viber and to share with the insurance company the doctor’s prescriptions, payments and receipts. The case should be reported in writing to the insurance company within ten business days of the arrival in Armenia.

When making any payment, keep the receipts and accompanying medical papers. As you arrive in your country, submit them to the Insurance Company within ten working days.

It does if the drugs were purchased through the doctors’ prescriptions for the case covered by insurance.

For example, if your contract states the insurance coverage to be 500, 000 AMD and if you have suffered a property damage received a cover of 200, 000 for it, then your insurance coverage makes already 300, 000 AMD.  However, if you make a further insurance premium payment, the initial coverage will be restored.

Yes, since the contract states that on the payment of insurance cover, the Insurance Company is granted the right of the Insured Party to to seek reimbursement for the payout.

For example, if an X party is responsible for the inflicted damage, you will not have to be involved in any legal disputes with that X party, as the Company will cover your loss and is granted the right to claim back reimbursement from the Party.

Healthcare for Brits in Armenia

It’s a good idea for UK citizens to check with NaTHNaC (National Travel Health Network and Centre) at least 2 months before their trip to Armenia.

They offer vaccine recommendations and the latest news on outbreaks and other health risks as well as factsheets that contain useful information for staying healthy during your travel.

Note that the government of Armenia does not offer free medical care for Brits in Armenia. This means that without travel insurance, you’ll have to pay for medicines, doctor and hospital fees out of pocket. And hospitals or medical centres may want to see proof of ability to pay upfront.

As you might imagine, these unforeseen expenses can be significant, which is why it’s important to ensure that you get sufficient travel insurance before you leave on your trip.

If you take prescription medication for an existing health condition, the NHS recommends that it’s also a good idea to get in touch with the embassy of Armenia for assurance that you can safely bring those medicines with you inside the country.

You’d also want to make sure that you bring a note from your doctor verifying that you need the medicine to manage an existing health condition.

You can check the NHS website for advice on pertinent vaccinations and health checks for more information.

What About Pre-Existing Medical Conditions?

  • Many medical conditions covered

Over 75/Serious Medical

  • Cancer, Heart Conditions, Diabetes, Stroke, Epilepsy and many more
  • Up to a high level of severity and even a terminal prognosis
  • chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Mental health conditions

As is usual with UK travel insurance, you need to disclose any pre-existing medical condition you have to your policy provider, unless you have been told specifically by your insurer that you do not need to declare that condition.

While this means that you may have to pay more to obtain travel insurance for Armenia – although not all pre-existing conditions result in an increase in premium- , it’s better than falling ill during your travel (related to your pre-existing medical condition) and being denied coverage.

Insurance providers typically offer free screenings for thousands of medical conditions and provide ample coverage to offset the cost of repatriation and medical care while abroad.

While it’s unlikely that you’ll get injured or fall victim to a crime if you confine your activities to safer regions in the country, it’s best not to take any chances and obtain a suitable single or multi-trip travel insurance policy before your departure.

Make sure you disclose all pre-existing medical conditions that you are required to do so when applying for travel insurance for Armenia. Doing so would help ensure that you don’t run into any problems should you need to file a claim.

The human body is an incredible work of evolution and as such there are plenty of things that can go wrong in both the short and long term.

For that reason it can often be difficult to understand what constitutes a medical condition that you have to declare to your travel insurance provider.

However, in general, the insurers’ questions will tend to follow the same general lines, such as:

Have/are you or anyone in your party:

  • taken any prescribed medication, or received any medical treatment in the last 2 years;
  • attended a medical practitioner’s surgery, or hospital or clinic (out-patient or in-patient) in the last two years;
  • awaiting medical treatment or investigation;
  • been diagnosed by a medical practitioner as suffering from a terminal illness.

All medical conditions you have must be disclosed as well as any previous medical conditions if they could have an impact on your current health.

So, while it is vitally important to declare what you need to declare, your policy provider will let you know if your pre-existing condition is not a factor for your trip cover.

For example, here at Emerald Life, we don’t require clients to disclose their HIV status for as long as they meet the following conditions:

  • They have been on antiviral treatment for no less than 3 months.
  • They have not been advised to switch to a different/new type of antiviral regimen.
  • If their CD4 count is above 350 or they have been advised by a doctor that CD4 monitoring is not necessary.
  • They have an undetectable viral load or less than 50ppm.

Note that non-declarable conditions can vary from one policy provider to another. It’s ultimately up to the insurance company to decide which pre-existing medical conditions are exempted from disclosure and set pertinent conditions for the exemption. However, Emerald leads the field on some of these.

What to Look For When Shopping for Armenia Travel Insurance

At this point, you probably already have an idea of just how important it is to obtain Armenia travel insurance before you travel to Armenia (whether multiple or a single trip cover).

This begs the questions — what factors do you need to keep in mind before buying travel insurance?

Well, the answer doesn’t need to be all that complicated. After all, the purpose of travel insurance is to give you peace of mind while you enjoy the sights and wonders that Armenia has to offer. For that, you can focus on a few essential factors:

Repatriation and Medical Cover

  • Medical Up to £10 Million

The most important part of any travel insurance policy is emergency medical expenses cover. Typically ranging from £5 million to £10 million – the higher in our case – this covers your costs if you become ill or injured abroad and require medical treatment.

Medical expenses should include repatriation cover so that if your condition means you have to return to the UK urgently then there is cover for transporting you along with any necessary medical equipment and staff. Unsurprisingly, these costs can be staggering.

Before you leave for Armenia, it’s important to ensure that your travel insurance policy offers enough coverage to pay for emergency medical services and repatriation back to the UK.

Here at Emerald Life, we provide coverage of up to £10,000,000 with our Armenia travel insurance.

Travel Insurance Armenia Cancellation and Curtailment Cover

Silver - Up To £1000

Gold - Up To £3000

Platinum - Up To £7500

Silver - Not Covered

Gold - Up To £2000

Platinum - Up To £5000

If you are ill or injured before you travel then you may have to cancel your trip. Some policies will also cover you if a close relative is ill or injured, or your home is burgled, and you have to cancel as a result.

If you expect to make multiple trips to Armenia in a given year, you can probably secure a better deal if you sign up for annual multi-trip travel insurance.

An annual policy will help you save time since you don’t have to reapply before every departure. More importantly, annual multi-trip insurance cost is bound to be cheaper than obtaining numerous single trip policies over the course of a year.

Armenia Travel Insurance Luggage Cover

Luggage can get lost during transit, and if that happens, it’ll be a major inconvenience in your travel plans. That’s why you need travel insurance that will reimburse you for the trouble should it happen.

For luggage delays of more than 24 hours, Emerald Life offers baggage cover which serves as compensation for the inconvenience and covers the cost of essential replacement clothing and toiletries if your baggage is delayed on your outward journey, up to the amount specified

If the luggage is lost (missing for more than 21 days), you’ll be paid the amount stipulated in the luggage cover for the accidental loss, damage or theft of your baggage and personal effects, up to the amount specified.

Travel Insurance Excesses and Exclusions

Silver - £100

Platinum - £35

Silver - £500

Gold - £150

Platinum - £0

While it can be tempting when buying travel insurance to just look at the final price, it is important that you check any excesses you have to pay.

That is because some cheap policies will have very high excesses which means any claims could be very expensive despite having the insurance. Sometimes excesses are so high it might not even be worth claiming.

Therefore, make sure you buy a Armenia travel insurance policy that balances a good price with reasonable excesses. Also, there may be other exclusions that reduce the premium precisely because payouts are limited. If you need travel insurance, then it is advisable to make sure that you have the best cover you can afford.

Most travel insurance policies will also include different excesses for different types of claims and you can find these in your policy documentation, but generally the medical excess is the most significant.

Do You Need Insurance to Travel to Armenia?

It can be argued that the real question is — can you afford not to have Armenia travel insurance when you leave for Armenia?

Again, tourists have no free access to healthcare services when visiting the country, and private medical care can be costly.

Armenia travel insurance should cover the cost of medical treatment if you fall ill or become injured during your travel.

While no one expects to get sick or become injured while holidaying in Armenia, accidents can happen. If things go south, it’s always helpful to know that you have travel insurance to rely on.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

You need a valid passport to enter Armenia . U.S. citizens are allowed visa-free entry to Armenia for up to 180 days per year. For visits of longer than 180 days, you must apply for a residency permit through the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Visit their  website for the most current visa information.

  • Armenian law requires that Armenian citizens, including dual nationals, enter and depart Armenia on Armenian passports . Even if you naturalized in the United States,  the Government of Armenia may still consider you an Armenian citizen . Children born in the United States to two Armenian citizens may also be considered Armenian citizens. Please read the information about Armenian citizenship at the website of the  Embassy of Armenia  and also review the Dual Nationality information in the “Local Laws and Special Circumstances” section below.
  • If you possess an Armenian “special passport” (a residency permit), you still need a valid U.S. passport to enter Armenia. Border guards have refused to admit U.S. citizens carrying “special passports.” Please visit the  Embassy of Armenia  website for further details.

Border with Azerbaijan: The border with Azerbaijan remains closed and the U.S. embassy has prohibited embassy employees and their families from non-essential travel to certain border regions due to the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijani conflict, see the current Armenia Travel Advisory for details.

Border with Turkey : The land border with Turkey remains closed and is patrolled by Russian Border Guards.

Border with Iran:  See the  Iran travel advisory.   The Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens against all travel to Iran  due to arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens. Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Natural Disasters : Armenia is prone to earthquakes and landslides. For more information read our page on Crises and disasters abroad .

Crime:  Crime is relatively low, and violent crime is infrequent. When police are called, they routinely show up; however, they generally do not speak English.  Vehicle break-ins  and  theft  are rare but are the most common crimes. Police indicate that there is a criminal group in Yerevan that targets foreigners and burglarizes rented apartments when the victims are away.

  • Matters involving  commercial and investment disputes  can take months or years to resolve as they work their way through the civil courts. The U.S.-Armenia Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) provides that in the event of a dispute between a U.S. investor and the Republic of Armenia, the investor may take the case to international arbitration.
  • Credit card fraud and ATM card skimming occurs .

Demonstrations occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

Victims of Crime : U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault should first contact the police and then the  U.S. Embassy  at (+374) 10-494-585 during business hours and (+ 374) 10-494-444 after hours.

Report crimes and requests for emergency services to local authorities by  dialing 911 . English speaking operators are available. Also contact the  U.S. Embassy  to report your situation.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime .

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Armenia. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Most scammers pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help.

Tips to avoid scammers:

  • Look for red flags like their location is far away, their profile was recently created or seems to be too good to be true, the pace of the relationship is moving too quickly, or they ask for money.
  • Set up a phone call/video chat in the initial stages.
  • Do a reverse image search on the profile picture.
  • If you believe you have been scammed, report the incident to local law enforcement right away and stop all communications with the scammer. If they ask for help, you should refer to them to the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate so we can work with local authorities to assist.

Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers
  • Lucrative sales
  • Gold purchase
  • Contracts with promises of large commissions
  • Grandparent/Relative targeting (kidnapping, arrested, medical emergency)
  • Free Trip/Luggage
  • Inheritance notices
  • Work permits/job offers
  • Bank overpayments

Technology Usage Abroad: Mobile devices are vulnerable to compromise, theft, and physical damage anywhere in the world. Best practices prior to traveling abroad are keeping all software (operating system and apps) updated and use virtual private network and encrypted voice over IP (VoIP) applications if possible. Make sure that all VPN/VoIP are reputable, and U.S. based. Do not connect to unknown open Wi-Fi. GPS Navigation Apps are helpful in getting U.S. citizens around in a foreign country. Prior to using the GPS app make sure you research the route to make sure it is safe. GPS navigation app may give you the shortest route without safety consideration. Be cautious of using dating apps/online dating websites abroad as U.S. citizens can be targeted by scammers. Make sure to inform your friends and family of your whereabouts, meet at a well-known public location, and do not consume suspicious food or drinks. Avoid traveling alone to bars or nightclubs. U.S. citizens have no reasonable expectation of privacy in Armenia. Telephone and electronic communications are subject to surveillance at any time and without advisory, which may compromise sensitive information.

Domestic Violence : U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance. Local resources for victims of domestic violence include shelters, medical assistance, and legal aid. Victims of domestic violence may contact Women’s Support Center at + (374) 099-887-808 which provides assistance to victims of domestic violence and the  Light House shelter  at + (374) 93-327-834, + (374) 43-500-503, or “20-80” which provides shelter and support to victims. In cases of sexual violence or domestic violence, victims may contact the  Women’s Resource Center  at + (374) 077-991-280 and +374 94 565626, from 9:00 AM to midnight. Victims may also contact New Generation NGO at +374 60378989 or +374 60478989.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders may be unable to access areas at a distance from major cities to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Please review the State Department’s page on  Arrests or Detention of U.S Citizens Abroad.  In addition, many people accused of crimes are held in local prisons in pretrial detention for between two and twelve months with the possibility of posting bail while waiting for a court hearing.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained,  ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately . See our  webpage  for further information.

  • Possession, trafficking, or the use of narcotic drugs, including marijuana, are illegal . A prescription for  medical marijuana  will not protect you from prosecution. If you are arrested for a drug offense, you could face detention during the investigation, which can take years to resolve, and a prison sentence after conviction.
  • Electronic cigarettes and related paraphernalia may be perceived as drug related.
  • Armenia does not allow the import of various psychotropic drugs.

Customs and Exports :

  • Local officials may occasionally seek bribes to perform basic duties.
  • Customs authorities may enforce regulations concerning the import/export of items like firearms, pornography, and communications equipment. Please refer to the  Armenian Customs Service  for further information.
  • The export of items of historical value, such as paintings, carpets, and old books, requires advanced authorization from the  Armenian Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports .

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods : Counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, and they may be illegal according to local laws. Counterfeit and pirated goods may pose significant risks to consumer health and safety. You may be subject to fines and/or have to give up counterfeit and pirated goods if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website and U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Dual nationals :

  • Armenian legislation permits Armenian citizens to hold dual citizenship. Even if you naturalized in the United States,  the Government of Armenia may still consider you an Armenian citizen . Children born in the United States to two Armenian citizens may also be considered Armenian citizens. Please consult the Armenian government’s  website  on citizenship and read the  Armenian law on citizenship .
  • Armenian law requires that Armenian citizens enter and depart Armenia on Armenian passports.  Individuals who are dual citizens, or could be, should consult with the  Embassy of Armenia  in Washington prior to traveling.
  • Armenian males over the age of 18 are subject to mandatory military service.  Penalties for evading military service include  jail time  and a  substantial fine . Young dual-citizen U.S.-Armenian men are advised to  consult with the   Embassy of Armenia  prior to traveling. There have been instances where dual nationals have been detained at the airport upon arrival until they can resolve their military service issues.

Traveling to Play Sports: If you are traveling to play sports in Armenia, remember that you are subject to local laws. Prior to traveling, please understand the terms of your contract and have plans for after your contract ends. If you require legal assistance the U.S. embassy maintains a list of local attorneys . The U.S. Embassy cannot offer legal services.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are  no antidiscrimination laws protecting  lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) individuals in Armenia. Although hate crime provisions exist within Armenia’s criminal code, they are not evenly enforced to aid in the prosecution of crimes against LGBTQI+ persons. Individuals face the potential of discrimination and harassment by state and private actors. The Department of State’s Human Rights Report documents that LGBTQI+ persons experienced physical violence, threats of violence, blackmail, and harassment. Police were often unresponsive to reports of abuse against LGBTQI+ individuals and at times, themselves mistreated LGBTQI+ persons.

See the  LGBTQI+ travel information  page and section six of the  Human Rights Report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: Armenia law prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities but does not fully define “disability.” This law is not consistently enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. The most common types of accessibility issues may include accessible facilities, access to services, and ease of movement. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, and general infrastructure, including hospitals, government buildings, and transportation centers. These issues are universal throughout the country, including in Yerevan. There are limited sign language interpreters available. Contact the U.S. Embassy in Armenia to receive this information.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  Informal taxis pose threats to people unfamiliar with local conditions, especially to women traveling alone. There have been occasional reports of taxi drivers sexually harassing single, female travelers. See our travel tips for  women travelers .

Outside major cities, medical facilities in Armenia are limited. The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of  English-speaking doctors.   Elderly travelers  and those with  existing health problems  may be at risk from  inadequate medical facilities .

For emergency services in Armenia, dial 911.

Ambulance services are

  • not widely available and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.
  • not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas except in Yerevan
  • not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
  • Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

We highly recommend that all travelers review the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Travelers’ Health webpage and general Traveler Advice for Armenia.

  • Review all sub-sections including the Travel Health Notices, Vaccines and Medicines, Non-Vaccine-Preventable Diseases, Stay Healthy and Safe, Healthy Travel Packing List, and After Your Trip.
  • Reasons for Travel (for example: Adventure Travel, Spring Break Travel)
  • Travelers with Special Considerations (for example: Allergies, Long-Term Travelers and Expatriates)
  • and General Tips (for example: Traveling with Medications, Travel Vaccines)

The risk of diarrheal disease is high throughout Armenia. Food and water precautions are recommended. Additionally, cases of  brucellosis  from consuming unpasteurized dairy products have been reported.

We do not pay medical bills.   Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas . Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance. Payment is made at the time of service with a credit card and then receipts are submitted later.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

The Department of State strongly recommends supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Armenian Ministry of Health or the National Institute of Health to ensure the medication is legal in Armenia.

Vaccinations: Be up to date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Air Quality:  Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The air quality varies considerably and fluctuates with the seasons in Armenia. It is typically at its worst in the winter, with smog and particulate pollution in or near cities. Consider the impact air pollution may have on you and consult your doctor before traveling if necessary. .The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Pharmaceuticals

  • Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the  Armenia Ministry of Health  or  The National Institute of Health  to ensure the medication is legal in Armenia.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection  and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.

   Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   The information below is provided for general reference only. Road conditions in Armenia differ significantly from those in the United States. Exercise caution when driving in Armenia. Reckless driving is common. Drivers frequently ignore traffic laws.

  • Avoid traveling at night  due to poor road conditions and limited emergency response resources. Pedestrians often cross dark streets away from designated pedestrian crossings while wearing dark clothing. U.S. Embassy employees are prohibited from driving at night outside the city limits of Yerevan.
  • Yield to aggressive drivers  to reduce your risk of being a victim of aggression. Police may seek bribes during traffic stops.
  • Winter travel can be hazardous, especially in mountainous areas.
  • Practice defensive driving and watch out for  drunk drivers , especially on the weekends.
  • Primary roads  are frequently in poor condition with stretches of missing pavement and large potholes. Some roads shown as primary roads on maps are unpaved and can narrow to one lane. Maps may be inaccurate.
  • Secondary roads  are normally in poor condition and are often unpaved. Roads may not have signs. Police and emergency medical services may take a long time to reach remote regions.
  • Gasoline quality ranges from good, at reliable stations in cities, to very poor. Do not buy gasoline and other fuels sold out of jars, barrels, and trucks by roadside merchants.
  • Driver’s licenses from the United States are not valid for driving in Armenia. For more information on obtaining an Armenian driver’s license, please visit this website .
  •  Exercise caution on roads near the border with Azerbaijan. Be aware that some portions of the road may cross international boundaries without notice. Roads may be controlled by checkpoints or closed to travelers without notice.

Traffic Laws:   In case of an accident, all vehicles must remain in place and stay until the arrival of the police. Tourists should always carry a copy of their passport.

Driving regulations are often ignored by drivers, and, as a result, accidents are common. The driving culture is aggressive. Pedestrians and bicycles may not be granted the right of way.

Public Transportation:  Public transportation, while inexpensive, may be unreliable and uncomfortable. Traveling by local unregistered taxis without meters can also prove difficult if a price is not negotiated ahead of time.

See our  Road Safety  page for more information. Visit Armenia’s national tourist office website .

Aviation Safety Oversight:  As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Armenia, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Armenia’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Situated at the confluence of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, Armenia is a captivating country renowned for its deep historical roots, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant cultural tapestry.

Armenia's heritage is steeped in antiquity, with a notable role as the first country to embrace Christianity in the early 4th century. Its capital, Yerevan, boasts a historic lineage as one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities, showcasing an intriguing blend of classical landmarks and contemporary architectural marvels.

Indian travellers embarking on a journey to Armenia can anticipate a rich and immersive encounter. From the tranquil shores of Lake Sevan, often dubbed the "Gem of Armenia," to the commanding peaks of the Caucasus Mountains, the country provides a haven for nature aficionados and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Armenia's hospitable culture is mirrored in its delectable cuisine, a medley of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours. Traditional dishes such as lavash (flatbread), dolma (stuffed grape leaves), and succulent kebabs offer a culinary voyage that resonates harmoniously with Indian tastes.

For history aficionados, Armenia offers a trove of ancient sites, including the UNESCO-listed Geghard Monastery and Garni Temple, remnants of the nation's pre-Christian legacy. The poignant Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex in Yerevan is a tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

  • Travel insurance is intended to cover risks and financial losses associated with traveling.
  • Coverage can include trip cancellation, baggage protection, medical care, and emergency evacuation.
  • When filing a claim, be specific and comprehensive in your documentation to ease the process.

Whether it's a trip across the world or a trip across the state, having travel insurance provides major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellations and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex, for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

You can find our guide to the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back.

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

Most travel insurance plans are simple, and Business Insider's guide to the best travel insurance companies outlines our top picks. Remember, read your policy and its specifics closely to ensure it includes the items you need coverage for.

No one likes to dwell on how a trip might not go as planned before even leaving. However, at its core, travel insurance provides peace of mind as you go about your trip. While the upfront cost may seem significant, when you compare it to the potential expenses of a canceled flight, emergency evacuation, or a hefty medical bill, it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

Coverage for pandemics vary from policy to policy. Some travel insurance companies have specific provisions for pandemic-related cancellations, while others may exclude them entirely.

Sports injuries are often covered under travel insurance, but high-risk or adventure sports might require additional coverage or a special policy.

Travel advisories have different effects on your travel insurance depending on your policy. Traveling to a country already under travel advisory may invalidate your coverage, but if you're already traveling when a travel advisory is announced, you may be covered.

Travel insurance usually covers the cost of emergency medical evacuations to the nearest suitable medical facility, and sometimes back to your home country, if necessary.

Many travel insurance policies provide coverage for the cost of replacing lost or stolen passports during a trip.
