Stage 1: A daunting opener

Last year’s first stage was said by some to be amongst the hardest Tour openers ever; one year later, the organizers have decided to follow the same template.

Indeed they have ramped up the difficulty, with an elevation gain of 3,800 meters, some 500 meters more than last time around. The stage will not so much shake off the cobwebs as evaporate them. Starting in Florence as part of the first-ever Italian Grand Depart in history, the riders will have 30 mainly flat kilometers before the first of seven categorized climbs rear up.

The Col de Valico Tre Faggi is the highest on the stage, peaking at 930 meters altitude after 12.5km of climbing. A breakaway is almost certain to form here and, passing over the subsequent climbs of the Côte des Forche, the Côte de Carnaio and the Colle de Barbotto, should be able to further pad their advantage.

The pendulum may well swing the other way over the three climbs located in the final 50 kms. The last of these, the Côte de Saint-Marino, is followed by 25 downhill and flat roads to the finish in Rimini. Much will depend on how the favorites ride the stage but if the big names and their teams go all in, a very difficult first day is in store.

The stage finish is a poignant location for Italian cycling. The 1998 Tour de France winner Marco Pantani died in Rimini in 2004, with this year’s Tour taking place 20 years after that tragic event.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “It’s rare for the Tour de France to start with more than 3,600 meters of climbing — in fact it’s never happened before! — and it’s also the first time that the race has visited the home city of Gino Bartali.

“The succession of hills in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna are likely to be the setting for an immediate and testing confrontation between the contenders for the title, particularly the climb into San Marino (7.1km at 4.8 percent), where the race will add a 13th name to its catalogue of foreign visits.”

Un an après la première victoire de Jonas Vingegaard, devant Tadej Pogacar, les coureurs retrouvent les routes de France mais pas seulement. Après le Danemark en 2022, le Tour de France s'élance cette année de l'Espagne et plus précisément de Bilbao. Après trois jours au Pays Basque (côté espagnol) les coureurs traverseront les Pyrénées avant de traverser le centre de la France pour filer dans les Alpes. Un seul contre-la-montre au programme (22 km) pour cette édition 2023, lors de la 16e étape, avant de conclure la Grande Boucle à Paris, sur les Champs-Elysées. 

Du 23 au 30 juillet 2023, ce sera au tour des femmes de s'élancer pour la deuxième édition de cette course de 8 étapes, dirigée par Marion Rousse. Lors de la première édition, Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) s'est largement imposée devant sa compatriote Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx) et la Polonaise Katarzyna Niewiadoma. Cette année les coureuses vont partir de Clermont-Ferrand pour terminer cette grosse semaine à Pau, avec un contre-la-montre de 22 km. Après avoir traversé le Massif Central, direction les Pyrénées avec une arrivée au sommet et quelle étape ! Après être parties de Lannemezan, les athlètes vont grimper le Col d’Aspin (12 km à 6.5%) avant de conclure avec le tant redouté Col du Tourmalet (17 km à 7.3%).

Yet, for the uninitiated, the screen is filled with French phrases like “Arrière du peloton” and “Tête de la course”, which can leave viewers puzzled. These terms not only add a dash of cultural flavor but also narrate an intriguing commentary on strategies and endurance. In this article, we’ll unravel the meaning of these French phrases commonly used during the Tour, providing an insider’s view into the drama, tactics, and fierce competition that characterize this iconic cycling race. Arrière du peloton

Literally translates as the “rear of the peloton”. This expression is used to highlight those riders who are currently trailing at the back of the main group, or the peloton. You see this term usually when some riders start getting dropped.

There are several circumstances that might cause a cyclist to fall into this position: a punishing high speed set by the group, challenging crosswinds that disrupt aerodynamics, or grueling uphill climbs where even the smallest weight and power differences can have a significant impact. In such scenarios, riders might find themselves distanced, either intentionally conserving energy for later stages or simply struggling to keep pace.

Flamme rouge

The “flamme rouge” is a term in the Tour de France that signals a critical point in the race. Translated as “red flame”, it refers to a red flag hanging under an inflatable arch that is placed exactly one kilometer from the finish line. The sight of the flamme rouge sparks a surge of adrenaline among the cyclists as they recognize the approaching conclusion of the stage.

It signifies the beginning of the final, often furious, sprint towards the finish line. For spectators, the flamme rouge ramps up the tension and excitement, as it heralds the imminent climax of the day’s race, where final positions can be won or lost in these last, heart-pounding moments. It is both a beacon and a challenge, encapsulating the drama and thrill of the sport.

Hors catégorie

In the world of the Tour de France, climbs are categorized based on their difficulty, both in terms of their steepness and their length. These range from Category 1, which represents the most challenging ascents, down to Category 4, the comparatively easier slopes. However, there are some climbs that exceed even the Category 1 classification. These formidable feats are labeled as “Hors catégorie” (HC), a French term translating to “beyond category” .

These HC climbs are reserved for the most grueling ascents. Factors determining this label include the climb’s length, steepness, the overall altitude gain, and the point in the stage at which the climb is positioned – with climbs later in a stage generally considered harder due to accumulated fatigue. These HC climbs represent the ultimate test of a rider’s climbing prowess, stamina, and tenacity, and are often where the true contenders for the Tour de France title are revealed.

Lanterne rouge

It translates directly as “red lantern” , a reference to the red light traditionally found at the end of a railway train. In the context of the race, the “lanterne rouge” is not just the rider who is currently last, but the one who ultimately finishes the entire race in the last place.

This title, however, is not necessarily one of disgrace. Completing the Tour de France is an extraordinary feat in itself, given its intense demands. The “lanterne rouge” therefore often becomes a symbol of perseverance and determination, recognizing the rider who, despite adversities, successfully concludes one of the most grueling contests in sports.

Maillot Jaune

“Maillot Jaune”, or “Yellow Jersey”, is arguably one of the most iconic symbols of the Tour de France, and in general, professional cycling. This term, literally translated as “yellow shirt”, refers to the jersey worn by the cyclist who currently leads in the overall, or General Classification (GC), standings of the race. This means that the cyclist wearing the Maillot Jaune is the one with the lowest aggregate time across all completed stages.

The Maillot Jaune is both a prize and a target – a mark of honor for the wearer, but also a beacon drawing the competitive attention of the other racers. Its bright color ensures it stands out in the peloton, symbolizing the prestige and distinction of leading one of the world’s most renowned cycling races. Wearing the Maillot Jaune is a career highlight for any cyclist and is a testament to exceptional performance and endurance.

Poursuivant(s)

Derived from the French word for “pursuer”, poursuivant(s) refers to a unique position in the drama of the Tour de France. This term designates a cyclist, or a group of cyclists, who find themselves strategically sandwiched between the leading group or cyclist, known as the “tête de la course”, and the main body of riders, the “peloton”.

This situation typically arises when a rider or a small group breaks away from the peloton in an attempt to bridge the gap to the leaders. Or, riders sometimes temporarily get dropped from the breakaway, and try to rejoin it – they are also “poursuivants”.

Tête de la course

“Tête de la course”, a phrase frequently displayed on screens during the Tour de France, translates literally as “head of the race” . But there’s a depth to this term that offers insight into the strategic dynamism of the race. This isn’t just a label for the cyclist leading the pack at any given moment; instead, it refers to the cyclist or group of cyclists – often termed the ‘breakaway group’ – who have made a decisive push to distance themselves from the main body of riders, known as the ‘ peloton ‘.

This tactic requires not only physical grit but strategic shrewdness, a calculated risk that balances the energy cost of breaking away against the potential glory of claiming the lead.

Lotte Kopecky Won’t Be Racing the Tour de France Femmes

The Paris-Roubaix winner will prioritize Olympic medals instead, with the Omnium event wrapping just a day before the Tour begins.

Last year at the Tour , Kopecky wore the yellow jersey before teammate Demi Vollering took it over on the Col du Tourmalet. Thanks to an impressive performance in the opening stage, Kopecky spent six stages in yellow. She attacked with about 10 km left and crossed the finish line 41 seconds ahead of the rest of the peloton. Kopecky ended up the overall runner-up.

This year, the Belgian will be going all-in at the velodrome, where she hopes to win the first Olympic medals of her career. Trying to transition immediately from track racing to the Tour would just be too much. “The Omnium ends Sunday afternoon, the Tour starts Monday morning. That is almost unfeasible to do that in a good way,” said sporting manager Danny Stam, according to Sporza .

“Combining those two events would also be a very difficult task mentally. If you were to take Olympic gold, it’s too short a day to start the next morning in the Tour. She can now fully focus on the Games,” Stam added.

GCN reported that Kopecky has “high hopes both on the road and track at the Olympics, where she will look to convert her successes from the World Championships into Olympic gold. The 28-year-old is a multiple world champion on the track across the Madison, Elimination, and Points race disciplines.”

So far, Kopecky’s best Olympic result was fourth place in the road race at the Tokyo Games.

Even though fans will be disappointed not to see Kopecky racing the Tour de France Femmes, there will still be plenty of action to watch. The World Champion will be racing the Tour of Britain Women in June before returning to the Giro d’Italia Women in July. And then, of course, the Olympics in Paris, which run from July 26 to August 11.

What roads will be closed during today's Greenville Cycling Classic? What you need to know

Tour de France veterans George Hincapie, Bobby Julich, and Christian Vande Velde will take a 20-minute ride alongside other cyclists at the Greenville Cycling Classic , presented by Prisma Health, today at One City Plaza.

Tour de France legends Julich, Vande Velde and Hincapie will ride alongside the first 200 registered riders to a casual, one-kilometer speed criterium loop race that travels around downtown for 20 minutes beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Beginning at 3 p.m., men's and women's professional and amateur cycling will occur along Main and Coffee Street. Bike races will continue through 9 p.m. to determine a winner in nine divisions, ranging from 30-minute rides to a 70-lap competition.

This race is part of the Speed Week race series, with nine races in South Carolina and Georgia.

Who is George Hincapie?

Hincapie is a former professional racing cyclist who competed alongside Lance Armstrong as his domestique or assisting rider on the U.S. PostalPro Cycling Team. He is also known for helping Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans to their first Tour de France victories in 2007 and 2011.

During Hincapie's 27-year professional cycling career, he won three U.S. Professional Road Race championships and finished second in the 2005 Paris-Roubaix, still the highest-placing American ranking for that specific race.

How do I attend the Greenville Cycling Classic?

The racing path will expand between East North Street, East McBee Avenue, South Laurens Street, and South Brown Street.

What roads will be closed during the race?

Road closures for the event will be in place from noon to 11 p.m. on April 25.

They will include:

• Main Street, from McBee Avenue to East North Street
• East North Street, from North Main to Brown Streets
• Brown Street, from East North Street to McBee Avenue
• McBee Avenue, from South Brown Street to South Laurens Street
• South Laurens Street, from West McBee Avenue to West Washington Street

Remco Evenepoel's Tour de France ambitions back on track after high-speed Itzulia crash

T hree weeks on from fracturing collarbone and scapula at Itzulia Basque Country, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) is back in training in preparation for his debut at the Tour de France . 

The Belgian star posted the first activity to his Strava account since the horrific crash, which also left two-time defending Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) with a pneumothorax, broken collarbone and ribs.

“On my way back,” Evenepoel titled a 98.7km ride near into Flanders from home to the west of Brussels. 

Evenepoel's injuries are not as severe as Vingegaard, who only got out of hospital in Spain last week. He was swiftly back in Belgium for collarbone surgery and recovered quickly, convinced that he can still be ready for the Tour de France Grand Depart on June 29.

The ambitious, but realistic 24-year-old, stated earlier this season that reaching the Tour de France podium in Nice at the end of July "would be a dream come true".

Evenepoel enjoyed a final day of recovery with a trip to Britain to see Arsenal football match in London. The time trial World Champion then completed a near-three hour 98.75km ride around Schepdaal, where he grew up, at a solid average speed of 34.7km/h. 

The next step on the “#RoadToFrance” as his caption read will see him head to Sierra Nevada for an altitude camp with Soudal-QuickStep. Following this, he will be off to either the Critérium du Dauphiné or Tour de Suisse, depending on fitness, to regain his race rhythm and punch before the Tour kicks off in Florence.

Vingegaard in contrast has been ruled out of attending Visma-Lease a Bike’s upcoming training camp with an appearance at the Tour still in doubt unless he is at his best according to the Dutch team.

If the Dane is to miss out, Evenepoel and Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe), who also crashed out of Itzulia but without any fractures, would become the top contenders to challenge the former two-time Tour winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

Evenepoel’s compatriot Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) has similarly been making a return to riding on the road since crashing out of Dwars door Vlaanderen in March. The Belgian pair share the same physiotherapist who has overseen their returns to fitness.

Thijs Hertsens from LAB Antwerp is the man looking after the superstars in Belgium and his work hasn’t gone unnoticed with both men returning to the road this week. 

Van Aert was shown on video turning the pedals for the first time since his high-speed crash on Wednesday.

"After working a lot on his mobility, he [Evenepoel] is already back on track,” Hertsens told Sporza earlier this week, clearly aware of how close Evenepoel was to getting back out on the road.

Van Aert has worked with the physiotherapist since his awful crash at the 2019 Tour de France and Evenepoel since his horror incident at the 2020 Il Lombardia.

"Cyclists are hard workers by nature, so it is very pleasant to guide them,” said Hertsens.

Van Aert's goals have been derailed due to his crash but he will switch focus to the Paris Olympics where he and Evenepoel will lead a top-level Belgian team that will want to claim both the road race and the time trial.

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland

Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.

The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.

A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .

Visitors planning to watch the participants finish are invited to park in one of the three nearby garages: Gene Stallings Boulevard Garage and University Center Garage will both charge a flat $10 entry fee, while West Campus Garage charges an hourly visitor rate. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS, which encompasses the Texas MS 150 and a variety of other charity rides across the country, traces its roots to 1980, when the first MS 150 was held in Minnesota. Today, it is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Participants in this year’s Texas MS 150 have already raised nearly $7 million to fight multiple sclerosis, with an overall fundraising goal of $9.425 million.
