We had a superb trip and yes

We had a superb trip and yes, would do it again. We learnt a lot, the weather was good, scenery fantastic, food outstanding and we enjoyed some fabulous wines. We visited 5 wineries which were all so different, we really appreciated each one and the effort made at each to make us feel so welcome. Our 2 guides, Jorge and Diego were very knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed their company. To Jack and Carola who organised the trip, thank you, it was perfect.

Tuscany - Chianti & Florence

The whole experience with SmoothRed from start to finish was just excellent. We would highly recommended them and will be certainly using them again. Everything was planned very well and went without a hitch from the airport transfers, to our hotel which was lovely, to our amazing driver Marco and all the arranged wine tastings and tours.

Bordeaux The flight and the transfers to the train station and airport were excellent Transfers to the hotel were also excellent Hotel was perfect and the staff very engaging. We were picked up from our hotel at 9am on Wednesday and Thursday. The coach driver Henri was the icing on the cake. Qualified sommelier with a fantastic knowledge of the wine industry. We had a question and answers every day. The four days exceeded our expectations and the Vin Yards were fabulous. Booking in for Burgundy next year. Top quality company and very professional

Mother/daughter trip to the UK

SmoothRed helped my daughter and I plan a 70/40 birthday celebration in the UK. It was our first time using SmoothRed and we will definitely ask for their help with future trips. The guides/drivers were excellent - both knowledgeable and nice. Our hotel stays were fantastic and every meal was special. The SmoothRed app was so helpful - every detail for the trip was there. Also, SmoothRed kept in touch the entire week and checked in regularly.

Smooth Red for Stress Free Custom Travel

Working with Smooth Red for our custom trip to Scotland and Ireland was a wonderful experience. We felt heard and supported in the planning process and throughout the trip. Marike created a bespoke itinerary that honored our interests in exploring places of wild natural beauty, hiking, history, culture (music, dance, falconry, sheepherding) and visiting my husband’s ancestral village. In Scotland, our driver/guide was a lively storyteller who wore a kilt and kept us entertained throughout. In Ireland, our driver/guide was an interesting conversationalist who showed us many places of natural beauty that extended our already excellent itinerary. Carolina took care of us before and throughout our trip, making reservations for experiences and meals we wanted to add and any changes we wanted to make as we travelled. We asked to stay in a mix of four star and five star accommodations, and that worked out perfectly. Smooth Red offers an App with a “living” itinerary, offering day by day details, names, phone numbers, walking maps, weather reports, notifications of any changes, additional suggestions for free time and reminders about upcoming plans. We have done a lot of travelling over many years, and this was one of our most stress free and delightful trips. We are already thinking about planning future trips with our Smooth Red team.

I rate my experience as excellent… beyond expectations

I rate my experience, as planned by SmoothRed, in the Champagne Region of France as excellent. We spent two whole days with their guides, The information, attention, and pace was perfect. The guides were very open to our suggestions; however, all their suggestions dripped with meaningful history and importance. Even with inclement weather on both dates, the time spent was truely fantastic. Tom

Fabulous birthday trip!

Jack and Marjorie of SmoothRed organised a truly memorable trip to the Champagne region and Paris for my birthday. Having used them some years ago for a similar experience, we asked them to arrange for us to visit specific Champagne Houses and they created an amazing itinerary for us. We stayed in 3 hotels over 4 nights, Assiette Champenoise & The Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa in the Champagne region and Cheval Blanc in Paris where we had the most amazing meal in their 3*Michelin restaurant. SmoothRed’s attention to detail was superb, from transportation to visits and birthday surprises along the way! I had the best birthday ever! It goes without saying we would wholeheartedly recommend this company. Special thanks to Jack and Marjorie for all their help in making this trip so memorable!

Marjorie and Chris were amazing to work…

Marjorie and Chris were amazing to work with. Our traveling from city to city went extremely smoothly and we had all the documents and tickets we needed in the app! We had a credit at a hotel to utilize during our stay, when we left the hotel accidentally charged us. I told Marjorie about it, and that same day, the hotel fixed the balance on my account! Our tour guides were amazing and super knowledgeable! Amazing trip!

Perfect Champagne experience

Ryan and Carolina worked hard to ensure that our trip to Reims was exactly what we wanted. From finding a hotel in the perfect location, to arranging champagne tours and tastings and recommending restaurants. Carolina dealt with all requests for amendments in a positive way and I never felt that I was being a nuisance. Our guide for the tour of three champagne houses was exceptional. We all felt is was a wonderful experience and allowed us to create more amazing memories. Would I use SmoothRed again - absolutely.

2nd time using SmoothRed

2nd time using SmoothRed - Excellent We've used SmoothRed for a trip last year to Burgundy and the Loire valley and used it again a couple weeks ago for a trip to the Douro and Porto. In both cases they were well organised and enjoyable tours with some very personalised experiences. On our recent visit to Portugal we were able to have some excellent personal tours of smaller wineries with some excellent wine and some great hospitality. The team at SmoothRed did a great job in particular as we had a last minute change as one of our party could not join us and modifications needed to be made last minute. Everything went off without a hitch. I would definitely recommend them and use them again.

Tasting in Burgundy - Como Le Montrachet Hotel

Como Le Montrachet, newly refurbished, excellent suite, special restaurant with a very extensive wine list including Romani Contee La Tâche. Alexander, our guide was brilliant, entertaining with a very extensive knowledge of the complete process of growing through to bottling and a good knowledge of vintages and tastes. The best wine we sampled was: Chateau Trapet Grand Cru Chambertin 2008 - bought 3 bottles, now safely stored in our cellar along with several cases of assorted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Carolyn and I send our thanks for arranging a very special couple of days, Robert.

Amazing trip to England!

Sincere thanks to everyone at SmoothRed for a wonderful trip! We truly enjoyed all the activities and hotels in London, Cambridge, and Bath. All of the tour guides were exceptional, and we loved the accommodations. There were so many memorable parts of our trip, including the freedom to explore; the suggested activities; the scheduled events, including private, expertly led tours; the professional and safe car rides; outstanding accommodations; and reservations at restaurants we wanted to dine at. The SmoothRed team quickly remedied any unexpected hiccups, such as alternate transport after our train unexpectedly stopped. The SmoothRed app was great and easy to use. We look forward to working with SmoothRed again for future trips!

Our first time using Smooth red

Our first time using Smooth red, what a wonderful experience.we were able to bespoke our trip and was everything we hoped it would be. I would highly recommend

Fine wine, cheese tours, Paris and flawless travel.

We have recently returned from a sixteen day Wine, Cheese and Paris holiday in France. Our second holiday planned and facilitated by SmoothRed. We stayed in six different hotels of superior quality, train travel, transfers and private tours all arranged by Smoothred. The best travel experience of our lives. Great traveler support. We had one hiccup on a Saturday morning. Sent a message to the support team and received a response in 10 minutes and issue resolved in 10 minutes. Give these folks a try you will always be glad you did. Shannon and Eugene Tennessee, USA

Thank you, Eugene! It's always such a pleasure to be able to organise these special trips for you. Looking forward to the next one!

Beautiful Loire Valley - wines and Chateaux

We loved our visit to the Loire Valley for several milestone birthdays! SmoothRed organized everything from the train from Paris to Tours, the taxi pickups and transfers, the wonderful hotel - Le Manoir Les Minimes and the tours of wine caves and Châteaux. Our guide, Nicholas, was fantastic - very knowledgeable and friendly, lots of interesting and fun facts. The app was a great resource for restaurants, ideas of things to do, and to keep us appraised of what was going on. Can’t wait for our next trip with SmoothRed - whenever that maybe!

Date of experience : 23 May 2023

Thank you so much for your feedback, Jan! We loved hearing about your experience with our local partners. Looking forward to planning another trip for you soon!

Superstars in food and wine tours

SmoothRed did such an amazing job booking our trip of a lifetime in France. Summer put together a phenomenal experience. With everything we desired to see it can be hard to coordinate but she was able to make accomidate perfectly. Even though we traveled so much, everything was organized really well in their app so we never felt lost. Their communication with us was always very quick and very helpful!! Can't wait to go back and work with them again!!

Date of experience : 11 May 2022

Thank you, Matthew! It was an absolute pleasure to craft this trip for you and so rewarding to hear our hard work paid off. Looking forward to planning the next one for you.

What a fabulous trip to Burgundy!

What a fabulous trip to Burgundy! As a party of 6, (which it turns out is the perfect number to share a bottle), we enjoyed the most informative and interesting wine tours, in places we would never have known about or ever been able to find ourselves!! On the final day we tasted in excess of 20 wines which were all of outstanding quality - Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru etc. We all agreed the tour guides were exceptional, and the cost of the weekend probably covered the wine. We will be booking a Bordeaux trip in 2023!

Date of experience : 07 September 2022

I'm thrilled the six of you had such a perfect experience! We really enjoyed putting the trip together for you. Hopefully we can tempt you away to another of our favourite wine regions soon.

We had an absolutely wonderful time in France

We had an absolutely wonderful time. The trip was seamless and spectacular. The app made everything so easy. Every component ran completely on time and without issue. Our drivers were usually early and always on time. We loved the accommodations and restaurants. The hotels were especially great. Our wine guides were very knowledgeable and helpful and spoke perfect English. It was great to get private tastings at all of the small family owned vineyards. The recommended restaurants were delicious. The recommended boat cruise was the absolute perfect way to end the trip.

Date of experience : 27 May 2023

Thank you for such a glowing review, Jason! We are certainly proud of our local partners.

Can't say enough good things about Smooth Red. Fabulous trip to Lisbon and Porto Portugal. Delightful guides were friendly and very knowledgeable. We had a perfect blend of organized tours and free time. Truly a once in a lifetime experience although we intend to do it again. Highly recommend.

FABULOUS Rioja

Just back from a fantastic time exploring the wineries of Rioja. It was a really well organised trip. All the staff at Smoothred were so friendly and helpful. Our guide in Rioja was charming. He took us to a real mixture of smaller boutique and larger wineries, we also had a chance to explore some of the medieval villages between our tasting sessions. MARVELLOUS xx

I'm so pleased we could ensure Rioja lived up to its fabulous reputation for you, Ash!

Porto Wine Tours

Home Destinations Portugal Porto

There’s a nickname for the people of Porto: tripeiros. Taken literally, it means “person who eats tripe”, which may sound a little insulting. But in fact it’s a reference to the 15 th century, when Porto’s inhabitants gladly gave up all their meat for sailors heading off on their conquests, leaving only tripe for the locals to eat.

Today, this selflessness still survives in the residents of Porto (even if the culinary choices have thankfully become more varied). Wander the vertiginous streets winding upwards from the banks of the River Douro and you can’t fail to notice the generosity and fine manners of the Portuenses (that’s a slightly less colloquial term for the locals).

Contact us to discuss your perfect Porto wine tasting holiday.

We have a range of Porto wine tours and self-drive tours available. And we can also create your ideal trip from scratch.

Call us on 020 8877 4940  or email  [email protected]  and we’ll be more than happy to help.

Delightful sights

Elsewhere in the city there are endless opportunities to stop and gawp. Like the Baixa district’s magnificent Lello bookshop with its spiral Art Nouveau staircase; the 20,000 blue and white tiles depicting historic scenes in São Bento railway station; and the vast glass-and-steel Casa da Música designed by Rem Koolhaas.

Porto cuisine

Did we mention the generosity of the people of Porto? Well it extends to their food and drink too. Throughout the city you can enjoy hearty portions of local dishes, from rich meats, hams and sausages to fish dishes like grilled sardines and the famous salt cod (bacalhão).

For a taste of the local fast food you just have to try a francesinha. Just be prepared for a gut buster. This gargantuan toasted sandwich includes layers of pork, steak, ham, sausage and cheese, all slathered in an oozy, boozy tomato sauce.

What to drink in Porto

Of course, you’ll come for the port. And there’s certainly enough varieties to keep you amazed and amused throughout your stay.

Around the Douro, a huge selection of grape varieties are grown. Visit some of the older vineyards to admire their impressively gnarled vines and see how dozens of grape varieties are often mixed together to make port (and some unfortified wines too).

On the more modern vineyards you’ll see how vines are planted separately, maintaining the distinction between the top five grapes for port: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão.

Throughout your stay you’ll also get an insight into the history of port. Like the fact that the small chapels along the banks of the Douro were originally built to bless the sailors transporting port, lest they come a cropper in the treacherous waters. And that the local schist soil regulates the vine temperatures and help port grapes grow so successfully.

More About Tuscany

Tuscany has been attracting visitors since the ancient Etruscans came along and decided to stick around. Since then, Tuscany has passed through the hands of several civilisations, including the Romans, the Byzantines, the Medici and the Bonapartes, each leaving their mark on this remarkable region.

Tuscany Activities

Visit florence, siena and pisa….

Throughout its rich history, the region of Tuscany has always attracted people with an eye for the artistic. And to indulge yours, you need look no further than Florence, home to some of the finest masterpieces known to man.

Here you can visit a seemingly endless array of churches, museums and galleries such as the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti. These are crammed with works by artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, Da Vinci, Giotto and Brunelleschi to name but a few. And in between you’ll wander the streets agog at the incredible architecture and sculpture on show all around.

Elsewhere, the medieval city of Siena boasts countless beautiful urban vistas, surrounded by superb countryside on all sides. Not to mention the city’s great scallop-shaped Piazza del Campo, where you can climb the 399 steps of the imposing bell tower. Or just relax with a Chianti and watch the chic locals go by (we know which option we’d choose).

There’s also Pisa, home to the famous leaning tower, and several città di arte (cities of art) including Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca.

And, of course, the famous Tuscan countryside could easily be called a work of art in itself. From some of the region’s smaller towns like Pontremoli, Fosdinovo, Garfagnana, Barga and Pieve di Brancoli, you can explore fascinating historical sights and look out across rolling hills and vines as far as the eye can see.

Tuscany Wine Guide

Surprisingly, Tuscan soil is actually fairly poor. Thankfully though, that doesn’t mean wine producers have just given up and packed off home. Rather, they’ve decided to concentrate on lower yields and higher quality. And oh, what results!

As well as the famed Chianti Clasico and Brunello de Montalcino, Tuscany also produces some lesser-known but no less enjoyable wines. Like Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Morellino di Scansano and Rosso di Montepulciano.

As for the cuisine, any self-respecting foodie will find themselves in hog’s heaven in Tuscany. The focus here is on simple cooking with excellent ingredients, whether it’s the local olive oil, cheeses like p ecorino di pienza, or cold cuts such as salumi di cinta senese.

Throughout your trip you can indulge yourself in some of the finest bruschetta, antipasto and pasta known to man, all while soaking up the views and delights of this truly idyllic region.

With an impressive total of 11 Denominazioni di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), Tuscany is third in Italy, behind Piedmont and Veneto, in terms of the number of DOCG wines it produces.

There are some household names amongst those 11 wines, with Chianti and its sub-region Chianti Classico each getting the DOCG nod. Wine lovers will also be more than familiar with the likes of Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the former of which is one of the finest whites to be produced anywhere in Italy.

Tuscany also has 33 Denominazioni di Origine Controllata (DOC), including a few varieties of Vin Santo and others from provinces across this most fertile of wine regions. The Sangiovese grape – whose name derives from the Latin for “the blood of Jupiter” – is the backbone of many of the best wines from the region. With high acidity but a relatively light body, creating top quality wines with this grape is often a challenge, but when done well, the results can be sublime.

Whether you visit the region in search of the perfect “Super Tuscan” tipple or you are craving something a little more traditional such as the aforementioned Vino Nobile di Montepulciano or the famous dessert wine Vin Santo, your thirst will be quenched. Here we go into just a little more detail about some of the best-loved Tuscan wines.

Super Tuscans

As the not-overly-Italian sounding name suggests, Super Tuscans are not an official category of Tuscan wine. They came about in large part due to what was perceived to be the restrictive DOC practices which ordered that Chianti wines must be comprised of at most 70% Sangiovese as well as at least 10% of one of the local white wine grapes. Producers instead decided to bypass the rules in order to create what they – and later many others – considered to be superior wines.

A Sangiovese-Cabernet Sauvignon blend known as Tignanello has been used to produce many of the best Super Tuscans over the years. This is an example of a so-called “Bordeaux blend” that utilises grapes more commonly found in the famous French wine region, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Still often served in many Tuscan eateries in a traditional fiasco , a round-bottomed bottle that is partially or wholly covered with a straw basket, Chianti wines are evocative of Tuscany. Based around the Sangiovese grape variety, Chianti wines are produced in several overlapping regions, which can be confusing when looking at labels. Add to that the separate DOCG classification of Chianti Classico, which comes from the largest of the Chianti sub-regions, and the waters are muddied still further.

The good news is that if you pick up a DOCG-designated Chianti from any of the sub-regions you are likely to be rewarded with a wine well worth drinking. Which specific option you prefer comes down to personal taste of course, but you can’t go far wrong with the medium bodied, cherry tones and bewitching aromas of the Chianti Classico wines.

There are a number of fine dessert wines to be found in Italy, but Vin Santo is considered by many to be the best of them. Usually produced from the Trebbiano and Malvasia grape varieties, occasionally the local classic Sangiovese is thrown into the mix to produce a rosé wine.

Once harvested, the grapes are dried on straw mats in warm rooms to allow the desiccation process to concentrate the sugars. Some Vin Santo wines can be very dry, but the sweeter options are the ones to have turned heads over the years. They can also be fortified with grape spirit to produce Vin Santo Liquoroso.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano

As the name suggests, this wine is produced from the Vernaccia grape in, or near to, the walled medieval hill town of San Gimignano. With one of the most archetypally Tuscan skyline views there is, the UNESCO World Heritage-recognised town is well worth a visit whether you are a fan of its top quality white wine or not. But oenophiles have even greater cause to pay a visit as this tipple is one of the best whites produced anywhere in Italy, as recognised in 1993 when it was upgraded to DOCG status.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Another DOCG wine, and another making very good use of the Sangiovese grape, with the addition of Canaiolo Nero, and some other local varieties. Aged for at least a year in oak barrels, plus at least one additional year, there are flavours galore to savour here and this is often great value for money too.

Crisp whites poolside in the scorching sun, spicy mulled reds at European Christmas markets and bubbly sparklings at milestone celebrations – the criteria for most getaways normally factor in a glass of wine or three.

But for the oenophiles and eager sommeliers out there, simply sampling the best pour your all-inclusive hotel has to offer might not quench your thirst for full-bodied, earthy and smooth fine wines.

The Smoothest Red Wines For Beginners

' src=

What are the smoothest red wines for beginners? You might think this is an odd title for a post, but this is one of the most common questions I get asked by friends who are looking to expand their wine knowledge.

Of course, everyone’s palate is different, and our endlessly varied arrangements of tastebuds give rise to a spectrum of tolerances for sweetness, bitterness acidity etc. BUT… I reckon there is such a thing as a good red wine for beginners. And it’s one that fulfils the following specifications…

Not too tannic: Tannic is the opposite of smooth. And, while many experienced winos can appreciate the robust lick of tannin in, say, a young Bordeaux or a Tuscan Sangiovese, excessive bitterness can be off-putting to less experienced tasters. I recall, in my younger days, viewing strongly tannic flavours as the mark of a bad red wine. If you love strong black coffee or sucking wet teabags then you might be an exception to this rule. If so, I’m going to ignore you and choose softer, smoother wines for this list anyway.

Fruit forward: Not everybody likes oaky wine, but everyone likes fruit, right? And bold fruit flavours help the beginner to determine how to describe what they’re drinking. A complex wine, with subtle hints of violet and cardamom, is going to be harder to get your nose around than one with obvious aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and tobacco. Thus, in my view, the latter is better suited to so-called beginners.

Inexpensive: And this brings me on to the next category. Complex wines tend to cost more, but a beginner is less likely to get the full benefit from all those nuanced flavours lurking beneath the surface. I’m not suggesting going super cheap either, but £10 in a supermarket should be easily enough to secure some of the best red wines for beginners. Watch out though: certain grapes, like Pinot Noir, don’t generally work well as inexpensive wines. So I’ve left them off the list.

Easily available: As I’m UK based, I’ve plumped for grape varieties that are available at most people’s local supermarket or indie wine shop. If you’re a “beginner”, you’re not likely to be bothered hunting around online for some obscure Lebanese blend. However, I would suggest avoiding the most famous, big-name brands… because they tend to be gross.

Enough waffle for now. Here is, in reverse order, my pick of the top five smoothest red wines for beginners.

5. Merlot: Now, Merlot beat Malbec to the top five here, because, although it’s hugely popular, I’m just not a massive fan of Malbec. Merlot used to be the most popular red wine around, but its reputation took a bit of a bash in the late 90s, after the film Sideways came out. The movie’s lead character (an annoying wine snob) hated Merlot and would only drink Pinot Noir. Well I love it and I reckon we’re long overdue a Merlot renaissance.

Merlot is a key ingredient in Bordeaux wines, which also contain Cabernet Sauvignon and so can be quite tannic, especially when young. But it’s a versatile grape, and you’ll find some excellent value single varietal Merlots all over the world, including the Pays d’Oc and California. Good Merlots explode with smooth, ripe cherry and plum flavours, and the more you spend the more complexity you’ll discover.

virgile-joly-merlot

Why not try: The Virgile Joly Merlot 2017, from the Pays d’Oc, available online at Naked Wines . It’s super fruity, with cherry and berry flavours, and sublimely velvety on the tongue. Regular price £15.99, members’ price £11.99.

4. Chilean Carménère: It was originally used for blending in Bordeaux, and is also popular in Italy, but Carménère wines from Chile can represent especially good value. I find Chilean wines generally provide a great combo of quality and value, and their Carménère tends to be smooth, warm and rich, with sweet, dark fruit and chocolate flavours.

90582

Why not try:  I always enjoy Montes wines, and the  Montes Alpha Carménère (above) is no exception. If you’re looking to spend less, Sainsbury’s Fairtrade Taste the Difference Chilean Carménère  is good value at (currently) £7.

3. GSM Blend: If you are a beginner, you might now be shouting “what the hell’s a GSM blend?!” And I wouldn’t blame you. Clearly it’s an acronym. But what does it stand for? Grammes per square metre? No, that’s a weight of paper. Guaranteed severe migraine? Quite possibly, if you overdo it.

No, it stands for Grenache, Syrah (or Shiraz), and Mourvèdre: a trio of grape varieties that are often blended together in the Côtes du Rhône region of France, home to the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend.  Châteauneuf-du-Pape  (of the red variety, at least) is the most famous blend to be based around the GSM grapes, although it does use a handful of other varieties too.

But the GSM blend has also been mimicked around the world, and for good reason — it’s beautifully balanced. The Grenache provides sweetness and lightness, the Syrah adds depth of colour, spice, dark fruits and body, while the Mourvèdre gives structure and finish.

2017_zalze_shiraz_grenache_viognier

Why not try: The Zalze South African Shiraz, Grenache, Viognier blend. Available in Co-op, among other places, for less than eight quid, it’s like a (much) cheaper take on GSM blends like  Châteauneuf-du-Pape .

2. Californian Zinfandel: Cali Zinfandel is one for those who like bold, strong, full-bodied, intensely alcoholic reds. And I count myself part of that set. Smokey blueberry, jammy blackcurrant, strawberry, cherry, vanilla, chocolate, liquorice, leather, menthol and tobacco are among the aromas you might find here.

Yes, Zinfandel can be complex, but what makes it good for beginners is that none of these flavours are subtle. They’re all out there screaming for you attention. So get stuck in, explore and see what you can experience!

sainsbury's paso robles zinfandel

Why not try: This lovely Paso Robles Zinfandel from Sainsbury’s (currently £9.50), which I gave a five-star review recently. Aldi also sometimes do some pretty decent Zinfandel, for a few quid less.

1. Australian Shiraz: Yes, it’s perhaps the most popular red wine in the world right now, and with good reason. Australian Shiraz bursts with body and fizzes with mouth-watering, rich, dark fruits. It’s also exceptionally smooth on the palate, giving modern wine-drinkers what they’ve been asking for (and, quite possibly, annoying French traditionalists in the process).

The main reason Aussie Shiraz is the number one in my Smoothest Red Wines For Beginners list is that it totally fulfils all the criteria I outlined above. Value: check. Availability: check. Smoothness: double check. Fruitiness: triple check. Yep, you can get Aussie Shiraz at any Tesco, Premier Inn  and Wetherspoons around the country. And because it’s so damn smooth, even a cheaper brand won’t be stripping a layer of your tongue off while you imbibe it. High praise indeed. And if you can’t smell Shiraz’s flavours of rich, dark, juicy berries then, frankly, there’s no hope for you in the wine game.

Dandelion-Lionheart

Why not try: It’s maybe not the cheapest or easiest to find (at around £14), but I love the Dandelion Vineyards Lionheart of the Barossa Shiraz (above). It’s intense, smooth and juicy as hell. Alternatively, Aldi do a cheaper Barossa Valley Shiraz which is worth a try at £7. Don’t go any cheaper that that though, or you’re asking for a headache.

I like your list – these are really good suggestions for “beginners”. I’m not sure how readily available these are in your market, but I think Merlot from the US (WA in particular, or CA) is a good one as well.

I definitely consider myself a beginner in the wine game and this really is helping me to go in the right direction! I literally searched “wine for beginners” in the WordPress search engine if that tells you anything. I just bought my first bottle of wine last night (crazy, I know) at Kroger (I’m in the US if you aren’t familiar with the name) – Sonoma Ranches Pinot Noir! I will absolutely be giving your suggestions a try. thanks so much!

Hey thanks, great to know you enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy the Pinot Noir. They tend to be much lighter in body than most reds, and really good ones can be expensive because they’re apparently quite tricky to get right. All Burgundy red wines are Pinot Noir, and they’re some of the most prestigious in the world. Cheers!

Love this spot! Super cute tasting room in a shared complex with great wines and ambiance! Started by an incredible husband-and-wife team, Smith Story wines are so thoughtfully made and really overdeliver for the price. I loved the new Filigreen Farm Pinot Noir, and the Cab Franc and Sparkling are always in my rotation. The tasting room itself is a super cute space. Dusty provided us with excellent service and knowledge, ensuring we had a ton of fun on our stop. There are quite a few different places to sit and there's a wood-fired pizza stand in the complex, if you want to eat while you taste. Definitely check out Ali's curation of vintage glassware while you're there (if only I could've taken it all home with me), and take a pic with the mural wall on the patio. My only regret is that I don't live in the area to make Smith Story my regular hangout!

Everybody has a story, and at the tasting room that is Smith Story Wine Cellars their story is quite grand. Located in Bacchus Landing, which is a curated collective of world-class wineries, each with its own tasting room, Smith Story Wine Cellars is one of the newer kids on the block as they took their time to move to their new home and open in a corner location a year ago. Smith Story Wine Cellars is a woman-owned winery operated by the husband-wife team of Alison and Eric Story. Founded almost ten years ago and aided by the assistance of a Kickstarter campaign, Smith Story specializes in small-lot wines that sources its grapes from family-farmed vineyards in the Anderson Valley, Mendocino and Sonoma Counties, and the Rheingau region in Germany. Ironically what brought a friend and I here was that we were here to visit another winery in Bacchus Landing and noticed that Smith Story was open and taking in wine lovers, and after our visit to their neighbors, we walked over to Smith Story Wine Cellars to see if they were taking in any wine tasters for their tasting flight, despite the fact we didn't have any reservations. Dusty, their hospitality director was present and welcomed us in as she sat us down in two of their comfy chairs so we enjoyed four of their signature wines from their Current Release Tasting menu. We began our wine tasting journey with a delightful splash of their 2021 Rosé, which was sourced from Mendocino County, and had a beautiful floral aroma on the nose and thanks to a low alcohol content gave this Rosé a serious poolside wine vibe. For our second pour, we enjoyed their 2018 'The Boonies' Pinot Noir, which was sourced from the Nash Mill Vineyard in Anderson Valley. With a lovely color to this wine and a silky smooth finish thanks to its lush earthy fruit tones, this Pinot Noir was the perfect red wine to have with any meal or sip all by itself. For our third pour we enjoyed their 2019 Cabernet Franc, which was sourced from Sonoma Mountain, and had notes of cherries, cinnamon and blackberries. More complex than their Pinot Noir thanks to its elegant finish, they recommend that you save this bottle of wine, if you should choose to do so as it will age like a fine wine. For our fourth and final wine pour, we enjoyed their 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was sourced from the Pickberry Vineyard near the Sonoma Mountain. With an aroma of blackberries, raspberries, and rose petals among others, this lush red wine wasn't too strong in its tannins, which was nice, and would pair in any meal with any medium cooked meat. We had a wonderful time at Smith Story Wine Cellars, as we were the only wine tasters in their homey wine tasting room and Dusty treated us as we were VIPs offering us any extra pours of any of the wines we tasted this afternoon. I loved their 2021 Rosé so much that a bottle being priced at a reasonable 28 dollars only added to my incentive in purchasing a bottle, and since I bought my bottle my tasting fee was waived, while my friend cost 25 dollars, which in this day and age is fairly reasonable. With a total bill of less than 56 dollars, they had two happy wine tasters, and I had a bottle of Rosé to take home, so it made this trip to Bacchus Landing a most productive one. Just imagine we probably would have never even decided to go to Smith Story Wine Cellars this afternoon had we not run into winemaker and cofounder Eric Story in his work overalls while walking to our original wine tasting destination. My only regret is we didn't get to see his and his wife Alli's golden-doodle Lord Sandwich who has been known to make appearances at their wine tasting room, and they even sell a coffee table book with him on the cover. Which just goes to show, everyone does indeed have a story to share, especially when your story is as rich and complex as it is at Smith Story Wine Cellars.

Super cute wine cellar in the area! It had a very modern and laid-back environment that was advertised as dog-friendly. We got to speak with Eric Story (co-founder), who told us about each wine and you could tell he was incredibly passionate about it. The wine was very good without breaking the bank! Lots of other wineries near it and close to downtown Healdsburg, CA.

This is a beautiful tasting room with absolutely amazing wines! I love the personalized experience here and love their story! Smith Story Cellars started in 2013 and I love that they are family owned and each vineyard they work with is owned by families! They started out in Anderson Valley and moved to Healdsburg. This is a must visit when in the Healdsburg area. Ali, Eric and Dusty are amazing hosts and have a deep passion for what they do! The wines are incredible. I love that you can sit out on their patio with bright and uplifting colors or lounge inside in comfortable seating and enjoy a tasting or a glass of wine. We also learned that Lord Sandwich, the winery dog, even has a sock charity to help give socks to those in need of them. There is so much that I love about this place! Some of them are their incredible wines, the fact that they are family owned, the wide variety of wines they have, and the amazing hospitality that you will find here!

We visited Smith Story this weekend and it was our best experience of the day! Dusty knew her stuff and the tasting was well paced. The wines were all excellent and extremely well priced for the quality. The atmosphere was casual and friendly. I live in the area and will put this on the short list of go to wineries when my friends come to town.

Very cozy and education-focused wine tasting spot run by a talented husband and wife team, and graced by their adorable wine dog, Smith Story is a fun stop in the Anderson Valley. Located in the Madrones complex near Philo, a manicured setting which also contains an upscale hotel, a restaurant and several wine tasting locations, Smith Story is a great tiny outdoor spot to taste wine in Anderson Valley, with about six distanced tables set on a charming outdoor patio. The owners and winemakers are very knowledgeable about European wines, having worked for years with K&L Wine Merchants and traveling to vineyards and wineries throughout the world, but often focused on European wine, and the wines they now make from locally grown vines, reflect that. Tastings take place outdoors as of this writing, and inside the tasting room, lovers of midcentury pottery and vintage cookbooks will find a good browse.

Thank you for your kind words Rachel! You get us! The new location in Healdsburg has been good to us with inside and outdoor seating that is safe and just as interesting. See you soon! -Ali Story

If there ever was a winery you want to support, it's Smith Story. Husband and Wife founded in 2014, funded in 30 days with a kickstarter, Ali Smith Story and Eric Story work only with local family farms with an eye on sustainability. The organic wines they produce are beautiful, made with love and respect for their craft. Their tasting room in Bacchus landing is a treat for the eyes, between the eclectic interior vibe and the fresh wine garden, an assortment of vintage collectibles for sale, and my favorite greeter,Lord Sandwich the Doodle. Sandwich has a charity, Socks for Sandwich, distributing socks to people in need. When headed to the Healdsburg area make a tasting reservation, enjoy their wines, and maybe bring some new socks as a donation. You will be a fan. They have several versions of their Storytellers wine club you can join, you can also buy wines, take them with you, or ship them home. I am a member of their wine club, and enjoy their wines at home. My favs are their Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, their Sparkling Brut NV is amazing as well. Take some time to visit, you will be glad you did.

Wow!! Thank you for your kind words Sandy! It’s guests and fans like you that make our Smith Story world so very special. Thanks for sharing & your support!! Lord Sandwich sends his smooches too. -Ali Story

If you aren't greeted by Lord Sandwich, it's not the same introduction. I may have left with half a case. The antiques, ambience, and owners make this a special treat. The antiques inside are well worth a peak inside. Highly recommend.

And, nowhere more so than at the “Main House” — home to Michelin-starred The Restaurant and The Bar , both of which have just unveiled a striking redesign putting natural light and those aforementioned views center stage. The Best Napa Valley White and Rosé Wines

Robert mondavi 2018 napa valley chardonnay.

Establishing his eponymous winery in Napa in 1966, Robert Mondavi pioneered winemaking in Napa Valley and paved the way for the area to become one of the world’s leading winemaking regions. The 2018 Napa Valley chardonnay is richly textured with aromas of red apple, pear, lemon and marzipan. Mondavi continues to evolve and flourish with the opening of Arch & Tower (930 3rd St.), their new tasting room, housed in the historic Borreo Building in downtown Napa Valley where immersive wine and culinary experiences are plentiful.

Burgess Cellars 2021 Sauvignon Blanc

Founded by Tom Burgess in the 1970s, Burgess Cellars was sold to The Lawrence family, owners of Heitz Cellar, in 2020. With new ceo and master sommelier Carlton McCoy at the helm, Burgess continues to blaze a new path with a contemporary brand identity that pays homage to its heritage, including a dazzling new hospitality space on the Silverado Trail in the Oak Knoll District. Complete with an abundance of indoor and outdoor garden spaces designed for relishing their sophisticated wines, this historic estate immerses visitors in a warm, refined ambiance (the hidden speakeasy-inspired private tasting room is something to behold). Crafted by winemaker Meghan Zobeck, their 100 percent sauvignon blanc with bright acidity offers notes of lemongrass and grapefruit and is a delight to savor while lounging on the expansive veranda with views of the surrounding vineyard where regenerative farming takes center stage.

Ashes & Diamonds 2022 Rosé No. 8

With a striking midcentury modern Palm Springs aesthetic, Ashes & Diamonds reigns as the hippest winery in Napa. Not to be missed are their wine and cheese or food experiences prepared by their in-house chefs. From former music industry advertising executive Kashy Khaledi, son of Darioush Khaledi (owner of Darioush Winery), expect classic, single vineyard wines. This lovely rosé is made of cabernet franc from local vineyards with notes of lime, Meyer lemon and heaps of mineral expression.

Realm Cellars 2022 Fidelio Sauvignon Blanc

The only white wine in Realm’s portfolio, the Fidelio sauvignon blanc is referred to as “a white wine for red wine lovers.” Thanks to cool-climate grapes and aging in three separate vessels (neutral oak, concrete eggs and terracotta amphoras), this impressive sauvignon blanc is beautifully structured with medium body acidity, tropical fruits, and a silky mouthfeel — a wine certain to make any gathering even more memorable.

Another new and meaningful highlight is the community-driven Three Dreamers Farmstand selling locally grown fruits, vegetables, and indigenous goods by local artisans where a portion of the proceeds benefit Martha’s Farm Animal Sanctuary — a serene private refuge founded and lovingly operated by acclaimed television casting director Nikki Valko Patterson and husband John Patterson, providing a deeply caring, expansive home to dozens of neglected farm animals.

Discover two big bonuses just steps away — the fresh debut of Giorgio’s at The Lot is a two-minute stroll down the main road. Serving up salads, pizzas and sandwiches, visitors may enjoy chef Giorgio Curti’s light Italian fare, this being his second location in Santa Ynez, amidst a rustic and lively outdoor setting. And, further up from Giorgio’s, the Gleason Family Vineyards has unveiled an alluring new expansion of their circa 1900s Refugio Ranch tasting room including outdoor spaces for entertaining, a farm stand featuring organic goodies from their farm and an indoor marketplace with coffee, olive oils and bath and body products, many of which come from local artisans.

The Best Santa Ynez Valley White and Rosé Wines to Try

Margerum sybarite sauvignon blanc.

Doug Margerum has always been at the forefront of spectacular wine and food. From launching Santa Barbara’s Wine Cask restaurant in 1981 and establishing it as the region’s epicenter of culinary mastery while helping build global awareness for Central Coast winemakers, to the 2001 debut of Margerum Wine Company and a downtown Santa Barbara tasting room perched in the Funk Zone. This renowned sybarite’s latest venture is a second tasting room in Los Olivos where you can enjoy his appropriately branded Sybarite sauvignon blanc alongside oysters and/or a bento box with such delicacies as Buri sashimi yellowtail with yuzu kosho and Dungeness crab baked with vanilla bean sauce in what is one of the most exceptional wine pairing offerings in Santa Ynez Valley. Layered with characteristics of melon, slate, grapefruit, and pineapple with notes of lemongrass, this lush wine is a classic Loire-style sauvignon blanc certain to beguile any oenophile.

Kings Carey 2021 Sémillon

With a new tasting room in Solvang and continual praise for his lush yet straightforward wines, James Sparks, who is also the winemaker for Liquid Farm, has much to celebrate. A highly versatile yet lesser-known wine that ages beautifully, his formidable sémillon (with grapes sourced from Star Lane Vineyard), is zippy with notes of lemon and herbs and distinct minerality. A delight anytime, anywhere.

Donnachadh 2023 Estate Rosé of Syrah

Ernst Storm, who is best known for his extoled Storm Wines, is making noise as the resident winemaker at Donnachadh (pronounced donna-kuh). Organically farmed and family-owned by Drew and Laurie Duncan,  Donnachadh Vineyard is perched in the Santa Rita Hills where they grow pinot noir, chardonnay, syrah and gamay noir. This beautifully structured rosé from 100 percent cool-climate syrah bursts with intense flavors of watermelon and strawberry along with hints of citrus and a dash of sea salt.

Waylan Wine Co. 2021 Chenin Blanc

Part of the Saarloos + Sons family of farmers and winemakers now four generations in the making, Waylan Wine Co. was conceived by Brad and Greg Saarloos. Wine making is a true family affair here and includes the brothers’ incomparable cousin Zach, who lights up their aesthetically hip Los Olivos tasting room with his lively and gracious personality. This crisp chenin blanc exhibits a smooth texture with lemon-lime and stone fruit characteristics and a satisfyingly savory finish.

Carucci 2023 Rosé

Self-taught winemaker Eric Carucci crafts highly approachable, mainly single-varietal wines and pours them at his charming tasting room in Los Olivos. Acquired from cool-climate biodynamic, organic and sustainable vineyards in the Central Coast, Carucci’s bright 50/50 Mourvedre and Grenache rosé opens with strawberries and rose petals and is layered with hints of luscious tropical fruit and citrus. This is a pale pink pleaser with plenty of gravitas.

Four Brothers 2023 Rosé of Grenache

This boutique, family-owned wine company is from, you guessed it, four brothers. They also have a prime perch for their Los Olivos tasting room, including one of the most charming and spacious outdoor spaces for lounging and imbibing. Thanks to a beautifully soft texture, light minerality and notes of watermelon, strawberry and hints of cotton candy, this impeccably juicy rosé of Grenache is certain to illicit a high dose of “oohs and aahs.”

Burgeoning Santa Maria Valley

When visiting Santa Maria Valley, head straight to Old Town Orcutt . A historic town that was once an epicenter for trade and shipping, this burgeoning hub is brimming with an approachable hometown vibe along with an increasing number of breweries, tasting rooms, bakeries, mom and pop boutiques, and restaurants. There’s even a 12-room boutique hotel, Wine Stone Inn (255 W. Clark Ave., from $269 per night; more booking options at Expedia.com and Hotels.com ) with modern guestrooms and a buzzing scene at the lobby bar. Pizzeria Bello Forno (119 E. Clark Ave.) is also a quick stroll away where you can choose from an abundance of knockout pizzas, including pear and prosciutto, cooked up in their authentic wood fired oven. Not to be missed is traditional Santa Maria-style BBQ and you’ll discover some of the best at Far Western Tavern (300 E. Clark Ave.)

Santa Maria Valley White and Rosé Wines

Riverbench 2019 bedrock chardonnay.

With one of the most peaceful, tree-cloaked wine tasting settings in Santa Maria Valley, Riverbench (located on the famed Foxen Canyon Wine Trail ) showcases the purity of the Chardonnay grape in all its versatile glory with this no oak, stainless steel fermented gem. Crisp with notes of pear, white melon and a touch of cream, this harmonious chard never fails to captivate.

Bien Nacido Chardonnay

Not only does Bien Nacido, which is owned by the Miller family, produce their own robust collection of cherished estate wines, they also supply their coveted grapes to many other leading wineries including Au Bon Climat and Qupé. Located in a highly desirable, cool-climate region of Santa Maria AVA, Bien Nacido remains one of the most prolific and influential vineyards in the wine industry. Along with the original 1857 adobe that adorns the property, Bien Nacido is now officially open to the public with the debut of the aforementioned The Gatehouse . This is where visitors may now relish their vast collection of illustrious wines including this chardonnay that offers notes of lemon, fresh fruit and chamomile with beautiful richness and mineral character.

Presqu’ile 2023 Sauvignon Blanc

Rolling hills and vast vineyard views are the backdrop for the exceptionally sleek modern structure that is the Presqu’ile (press-keel) hospitality space, complete with a hilltop setting, cut stone walls and vaulted ceilings. Many wineries offer food and wine experiences , but Presqui’le’s is one of the most notable thanks to resident chef Julie Simon’s culinary prowess. Their mezze platter of five to six dishes (with many ingredients sourced from the on-site organic farm) is a spectacle. Inspired by the flavors and abundance of each season, it pairs perfectly with their elegant, cool-climate wines, including this vivacious, 100 percent estate fruit sauv blanc bursting with citrus fruit, green herbs, lime zest and mineral zing.

INSIDE OUT 2 - SO EMBARRASSING -- Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley, where Emotions like Embarrassment (voice of Paul Walter Hauser) take turns driving—or throwing themselves upon—the console as Riley experiences all the feelings. Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen, “Inside Out 2” releases only in theaters June 14, 2024. © 2024 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

SPOILER WARNING :  This story mentions major spoilers for “ Inside Out 2 ,” now playing in theaters.

Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” continues to bring joy to audiences around the world, dominating the global box office. The sequel to 2015’s “Inside Out” picks up with Riley, now a teenager about to go to hockey camp when puberty hits. Enter a range of emotions that include Ennui, Embarrassment and Anxiety.

What media & entertainment execs are saying about using gen ai: the vip+/harrisx spring 2024 survey, apple ios 18: what's new in the latest iphone software release, popular on variety.

Below are all the hidden nods you might have missed.

Pixar’s “Elio,” about a boy who is chosen to become Earth’s ambassador to other galaxies, is set to be released in 2025. As with previous films, the company likes to hint at its next film, and “Inside Out 2” does not disappoint.

It’s a hard one to spot, but Deamer acknowledges there’s a well hidden easter egg. Look closely at the memory spheres during the sarcasm sequence. “There’s one of ‘Elio,'” says Deamer.

Deamer acknowledges the yellow Luxo ball, hidden in many Pixar films, is hidden in the background. When the emotions are inside Riley’s mind, they come across a parade of careers — all the possible jobs she could hold in the future, and yes, she tinkers with the idea of being a Supreme Court judge.

Riley loves her boy bands, and one of her favorites is 4*Town, once the biggest boy band on the planet. They first appeared in 2022’s “Turning Red.”

Bing Bong’s return seemed inevitable after Riley’s imaginary friend disappeared during “Inside Out.”

The last time audiences saw the elephant, he was left fading as he tells Joy to “take her to the moon.” But Riley wasn’t the only one who had feelings for the beloved character — so did all the animators. “Everyone wanted to bring back Bing Bong,” says Deamer. So they found a way.

Bing Bong’s return happens early on in the film. After Riley wins an ice hockey game, she falls asleep. Joy’s bunk has a Bing Bong figure on the shelf. Says Deamer, “Joy hasn’t forgotten Bing Bong, so Bing Bong is in Joy’s cube, done in origami.”

Lance Slashblade

“Inside Out 2” embraces mixed animation styles.

Inside Riley’s mind, cartoon characters from Riley’s childhood Bloofy and Pouchy appear, hidden deep in Riley’s vault of secrets.

For that, the team embraced various styles including 2D. At the film’s premiere director Kelsey Mann said, “We love animation, all styles, and we’re so excited that we’re able to do multiple things in this movie.”

Neilsen explained that Lance SlashBlade, from a game Riley used to play that recalls “Final Fantasy,” is portrayed in the style of an early-2000s video game, “Lance SlashBlade, I think is a standout for all the gamers out there and for people that know gamers.”

Lance’s sword also hides another nod, this one to hockey. “In the center of it, there are the sharpened blade edges of the sword and then in the darker section of the sword, there’s a hockey stick,” he reveals.

In animating Lance, Deamer says, “We were asked to do a digitally simple thing. We had more meetings about that character and how much pixelation was too much.” He adds, “There were about 14 people in the room for about 12 weeks wondering ‘What do we mean by not as good-looking quality? and where do we land?'”

Ralph Eggleston

Pixar animator Ralph Eggleston, who worked on “Toy Story,” “Monsters Inc” and the first “Inside Out” died in 2022 . This easter egg is perhaps Deamer’s most personal homage, and a favorite. “He was a friend and mentor to me,” says Deamer, who says that viewers will see that “he’s the mind worker in the projections area. He’s the first one to go with Joy’s character.”

Eggleston, Deamer used to work in pastels and would always have the colors all over his hands. “He’d put his art around him, and he collected DVDs and laserdiscs, so that detail is in there. You’ll see his art in that moment.”

A113 and Terry Gilliam’s ‘Brazil’

Teen Riley has dark secrets in her mind. What they are has yet to be revealed.

The vault holds a classic Pixar easter egg. Above the door to the right, the numbers are etched in Roman numerals. It’s in reference to the character animation classroom at Cal Arts, the school many Pixar animators attended, a number which has appeared in several films.

Big Bird’s Puppeteer Caroll Spinney

Nielsen wanted a nod to someone very special to him. “Caroll Spinney is the puppeteer who played Big Bird and Oscar. He sadly passed away, but I still wanted to give a little nod to him in the film.”

After Riley and her friends win a hockey game, they hang out and eat pizza. The pizza boxes say Spinney’s Pizza.

Angelique Jackson and Jack Dunn contributed to this story.
