Day One is an elegant take on journaling. The app lets you record your daily thoughts, respond to prompts, add photos and graphics as well as and work in free-form text or add structure and formatting. The Day One extension lets you insert the current webpage into the journal as well. 

You might think that this kind of privacy should be built into every browser, but DuckDuckGo adds it to Safari. This extension automatically blocks third-party trackers on most websites and also gives you a dashboard to see each site's privacy grade on an A to F scale. 

Evernote Web Clipper

Evernote Web Clipper lets you save any webpage to your Evernote account for future reference.

Save to Pocket

MacOS Browser Extensions

On the Mac, Bear has a free browser extension for Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. It allows you to save portions or entire web pages as Bear notes with a single click. Bear Pro subscribers can sync all notes between their devices.

The Bear browser extension requires Bear for Mac to be installed.

• For Safari : Bear now automatically installs its Safari extension. Enable it by opening Safari, then going to Preferences > Extensions . Find Bear in the extensions list and enable it
• For Chrome : Visit the Chrome Web Store and click"Add to Chrome"
• For Firefox : Visit the Mozilla Add-Ons and click “Add to Firefox”
• For Opera : Visit the Opera Add-Ons and click “Add to Opera”

Once installed, click the Bear button in your browser toolbar. After a few seconds, you’ll see a new note appear in Bear with the content of the page. Extension settings

You can adjust some options of the Bear extension from within Bear. You can add tags to all clipped notes, import images, and append the page URL to the Bear note.

How to save a Safari webpage or text to the Notes app on Mac, iPhone, and iPad

Learn how to save Safari webpages or text to your Mac, iPhone, and iPad Notes app for quick reference and organization.

There’s no easier way to capture a note from Safari than with the Notes app. Whether you’re doing research for school or work, planning a trip or event, or just want to make a note of an article, Apple’s integration makes it simple.

Save a Safari web page link to Notes

You can either bookmark a web page right in your browser or save it to Notes if that’s your jam.

You have two quick ways to add a Safari page to Notes on your Mac. So use whichever is most comfortable for you. And if you don’t see the Notes option, you may have to update your Mac Share Menu .

• Click File from the top menu bar and click Share > Notes .
• Click the Share button from the top right of the Safari toolbar and pick Notes .

You’ll see the link icon displayed in the note automatically. But you can type in more text above or below it if you like.

Next to Choose Note , you can select a spot for your note or add to an existing one.

• Below New Note , at the top of the pop-out, you can select one of your Folders . And from there, you can pick a subfolder if you like. Conveniently, each pop-out has the New Note option right at the top.
• Beneath Folders, you’ll see your Pinned notes indicated by the pin icon. So, adding to one of those is a breeze.
• Finally, you have the rest of your notes. You can add to a Shared note , and those have a contact symbol next to them.
• The only limitation you have is if you want to add to an existing Locked note. If you try, you’ll see that the note is grayed out and thus un-clickable.

But for the most part, no matter where you want the note, a folder or subfolder, new or added to an existing one, you’re covered.

If you have a lot of folders, subfolders, and notes, you can use the handy Search box to find one quickly.

On iPhone and iPad

Sharing a page from Safari to Notes on your iPhone and iPad can be done as quickly and easily as on Mac. Tap the Share button and choose Notes in the second row of your Share Sheet. If you don’t see Notes, select More to add it, or check out our how-to for updating your Share Sheet on iOS .

You can do a quick Save to send the note to your default Notes account with the link icon. Or tap New Note and then find a folder or subfolder.

• Each folder and subfolder has your notes sorted with Pinned at the top and the remaining Notes at the bottom.
• Shared notes have the contact icon like on Mac, and Locked notes are grayed out and cannot be selected.
• The Create New Note button is at the bottom of each screen, and the Search box is at the top.

Save Safari web page text to Notes

If you’re going through a website in Safari and find some important text, here’s how to save that text to the Notes app.

• Select the text on the Safari web page and right-click .
• Choose Share and select the Notes app.
• You will see the actual selected text in the small window. It will be saved as a new note, but you can click the Choose Note option and add it to an existing note.
• Finally, click Save .

• Open Safari, visit the website, and select the text you want to add to a note.
• After selecting the text, a thin menu strip will pop out. Tap the arrow button here and then tap Share .
• Select the Notes app from the iOS Share Sheet.
• Optional : Tap New Note and choose an existing note or folder where you want to save this note.
• Finally, tap Save .

How to highlight text and add post-its in Safari

There are a handful of webpages I keep referring back to, often reading the same parts over and over. They may be part of an instruction manual, or other reference material 1 . And sometimes, while researching an article, I want to highlight sections and phrases to find them more easily. Just like using a highlighter marker on a sheet of paper.

Until now, I’ve never found good way to do it. Apps required me to sign up for an account, or store my highlights on their servers, or pay a subscription. Or the app was just plain clunky. Then I found Highlighter for Safari.

Highlighter for Safari

Highlighter for Safari, from developer Alex Denk , is a Safari extension that lets you draw highlights onto the current web page. Just install the app and activate the extension. Then, click on the new Highlighter icon up in Safari’s tool bar, and you’ll see this panel:

Pick a color, and then get highlighting. You can also add a post-it to the page, to add any notes. The neatest part is that the highlights are persistent. That is, they will be there even if you reload the page — or even quit Safari.

Save and export web page notes

In fact, these persistent notes are even more useful than that. Any page that you have highlighted gets added to a list. This list is accessible in the Highlighter app at any time. You can’t search the list, but you can sort it by URL, which may or may not help.

You can also export your highlights.

Keyboard shortcuts

Highlighter for Safari is amazing. I already find it super-useful, although I really don’t like mousing up to the toolbar every time I want to use it. But that’s fine. If you’re happy using the same color, you can just hold down the option key, then use the mouse pointer to highlight text. Let go of the option key, and you’re back to regular service. This is what really makes the app killer for me.

One thing to note is that you should research the authors of any Safari extensions before installing them. That’s because extensions can see any details of any web page, including anything you type. And that includes passwords. This applies to all extensions, so this is just a reminder, not any kind of warning particular to Highlighter for Safari.

That said, I really like Highlighter for Safari. It’s simple and useful.

One of the handiest types of software in anyone’s quiver is the browser extension: those cool little applets that let your browser do what you want it to do. And one of the nicest things about iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is that you can now add extensions to the Safari browser. Even though this is a new feature that launched with the latest iOS version, there are already a number of useful extensions available for you to add.

What follows is a rundown on how to add extensions to your Safari app — while we’ve illustrated the process using an iPhone, you can follow the same basic directions with an iPad. We’ve also included a sampling of some extensions you can try.

How to add extensions

• Tap on the Settings app.
• Scroll down to and select Safari > Extensions.
• Any extensions that you’ve already installed will be listed here. Tap on “More Extensions” if you’d like to see what’s available in the App Store. (You can also simply go to the App Store and search on “Safari Extensions.”)

• Once you’ve installed your first extension, you’ll see a little “puzzle piece” icon on the left side of Safari’s address bar. Tap that, and the menu that pops up will include your current extensions plus a “Manage Extensions” selection, which lets you toggle your extensions on and off.

Some extensions to try

This is a small sampling of some of the extensions that you can now access via the App Store. While there are not many extensions yet available (compared to the number of extensions for, say, Chrome), it’s a pretty safe bet that there will be lots more to come over the next few months.

Amplosion ($2.99)

AMP, which is short for “Accelerated Mobile Pages,” is a web format created by Google to optimize search results for mobile browsers. However, if you’d rather not have Google tweaking the webpages you upload, you can use Amplosion to redirect the AMP links that show up in search results into normal mobile links.

Noir ($2.99)

When you’re browsing at night and you’ve set your iPhone or iPad to dark mode, you will often hit a website that is bright enough to make your eyes water. Noir allows you to set a dark mode for all the websites you visit.

1Password (subscription needed)

1Password is a well-known and respected password manager . If you’re a 1Password user, there’s no question that you’re going to want to add this one to your mobile Safari app.

Super Agent for Safari (free)

This handy extension automatically fills out a website’s cookie consent forms based on your preferences, which can save you a lot of time and irritation.

Web Inspector (free)

Something for developers: an app that lets you inspect the HTML coding of a website, modify it, debug it, and perform other essential tasks.

Although browsers have evolved to become more fast, secure, and effective, they have not adapted well to meet the challenge of managing a large amount of information. The users of web browsers today swim in a sea of mess of unorganized tabs and bookmarks.

Browser extensions or add-ons improve the browsing experience by letting you group related tabs, save reference links with proper metadata, and selectively curate your topics of interest. We’ll explore some Safari extensions to manage bookmarks or if you work with many tabs at once.

G App Launcher is the extension to access Google sites and services. At first thought, you might think, why would anyone need this add-on when many Google apps are a click or press away. It gives you access to some rare Google services you might not have heard of, but might come helpful in many situations.

For example, you can create a shortcut of Google Trends, Scholar, Jobs on Google, Opinion Rewards, Play Academy, Flights, Advanced Search, Google Design, Research, and much more. In addition, you can create custom shortcuts for any websites.

Click the Settings button to see the list of available shortcuts on the left, and to the right is the panel for your shortcuts. Now drag-and-drop the bookmarks from left panel to the right. You can even sort your selection via the Sort button.

3. GoodLinks

GoodLinks is a read-it later and bookmarking app. While it offers functionality similar to Raindrop.io, the app uses Cloudkit to sync articles across your Apple devices. It extracts the article text and offers you different customization options to provide a wonderful reading experience.

To get started, click the extension icon, add a tag or summary, then click Add . When you open the app, you’ll see an organized view of your saved pages. You can categorize pages into Unread, Starred, Untagged, and Read. GoodLinks has extensive support of Siri Shortcuts, URL scheme, and beautiful widgets to quickly access your article list.

Tackle Too Many Tabs

While tabs have become an integral part of how people navigate the web, they continue to represent as simple, ordered lists of pages with limited contextual cues and understanding of high-level tasks. If you're looking for a Safari tab manager, these extensions can help you organize tabs, prevent tab clutter, and cut distractions.

1. Safari Tab Groups

Most of us switch between several tabs during an average browsing session, and keeping them organized is not easy. The Safari Tab Groups feature lets you bundle relevant tabs together and switch between them whenever necessary. You can label Tab Groups with custom names to identify them, and use them in various ways.

Grammarly doesn’t work on Google Drive or Google Docs, but it helps many users write mistake-free on Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and almost everywhere else that requires you to write on the web.

Privacy and security extensions

DuckDuckGo is the search engine for users who’ve grown to distrust the business practices of Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engine firms. Safari users can install the DuckDuckGo extension and bring the search engine directly into the browser’s default search field. DuckDuckGo doesn’t track, collect or share users’ personal information or search history and doesn’t follow its users around the web with ads.

Safari users might find that DuckDuckGo is a search engine they can trust and still rely on for relevant results.

LastPass makes password memory recall and tedious password resets a thing of the past. The password manager safely stores user data with AES-256 bit encryption and automatically fills login info on sites around the web. LastPass is available for free and charges $2 per month for premium features like one-to-many sharing, advanced multi-factor options and priority tech support. LastPass can also generate passwords for sites, giving users the freedom and flexibility to maintain a master password for the LastPass service without having to create unique passwords for every site they use.

LastPass can safely encrypt and store all of your logins and passwords.

1Password is another popular password vault that can automatically log users into sites, fill out personal information and generate strong passwords. 1Password costs $3 per month for individuals and $5 per month for families with up to five people. The service is more polished and has more features than LastPass, but isn’t currently supported on Windows or Chrome devices. 1Password also allows users to bypass the cloud and store their information locally, and it can generate one-time tokens for sites that require two-step verification.

1Password is a more feature packed password vault, but it’s not as widely supported as LastPass and others.

Adblock Plus

Adblock Plus has a legion of fans and users who herald its ability to block annoying ads from showing up in your browser. The Adblock Plus extension for Safari can also be customized to allow unobtrusive ads, blocking only those that get in the way when surfing. According to the makers of Adblock Plus, the open-source extension is currently active on more than 100 million devices, blocking banner ads, video ads, pop-ups and other junk advertising.

Adblock Plus removes annoying ads of all types and is actively used on more than 100 million devices today.

Shut Up is the kind of tool that would be nice not to need, but the web can be a cruel and hateful place. Shut Up is a free Safari extension that simply blocks all comments from appearing in your browser. Users can toggle the feature off any time they want to step into the darkness and remember how quickly online conversations can devolve. The maker of Shut Up says the extension won’t track or spy on browsing activity, so that comment-free browsing experience won’t come at the expense of user privacy.

Comments can turn an enjoyable browsing session into a deeply painful and discouraging experience. Shut Up puts an end to that by hiding all comments by default.

Coda notes: a safari extension, june 7th, 2010.

So, just a few moments ago, Apple introduced Safari 5, the next major version of our favorite web browser. And with Safari 5? Safari Extensions, a new way for developers to add new functionality to Safari.

And, also a few moments ago, we have our very first crack at a Safari extension! What is it?

Well, the pitch goes something like this: we do a pretty good job making life easier for people who hand-code websites using Coda , our all-in-one web development environment. But is there anything we can do to make life better for the client? The person who’s paying the bills, or the marketing person, or the guy or girl who’s likely to call you and say, “Hey, can you make that one thing bigger, move that one thing and do that thing? By tomorrow?” Nobody knows what that means. And that’s something we thought we could improve.

Introducing Coda Notes , our Safari Extension for website annotation, and a fun little project.

When you install Coda Notes, you’ll get a new button in your toolbar. Click it to see all our annotation tools, built right into Safari. Draw some notes on your favorite website. Communicate changes, ideas, concepts, or problems. Then, when you’re done, hit the Send Notes button and the whole page flips over as a postcard .

Enter your comments, e-mail addresses, hit the nice looking “Send Notes” button, and that’s it! The developer gets an e-mail with your screenshot and notes, instantly. In short, with Coda Notes, you can communicate in seconds what would have been much harder to communicate before, all without ever leaving Safari.

And let’s not forget cool thing #2: we literally added a new feature to Safari. In a standards-based, clean way. This, my friends, is awesome.

( Tech Note: The Coda Notes extension is built entirely in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS; the extension bar is basically an HTML file, and the page-flip effect is accomplished using a CSS transform. We draw on a transparent canvas element injected over the target page. Live text editing is done by setting the contentEditable attribute on the body of the page, thus turning Safari into an editor, similar to how Apple Mail works!)

We’re feeling it out. It’s certainly “quick and dirty” in its current form, and Coda Notes was a bit of an experiment for us — made in only 4 days! But when Safari Extensions are more available to the public, it’s likely you’ll see Coda Notes too. Keep an eye on this blog and/or follow us on Twitter!

Meh… Oh, wait, strike that. Awesome. I mean, seriously, this is such a cool idea. Just out of curiosity, what gets sent to the recipient? Just an overlay (or the HTML/JS to recreate it), or is it a screenshot? At any rate, I’m really impressed with the cleverness of the feature, as well as the turnaround to create something like this. This really looks great! I think one reason the markup is captured as a screenshot is because depending on plugins, zoom level, location, etc. it may appear differently on the client’s computer. That’s the way I see it at least. So when can we download it? :)

Wow, this looks awesome. Now the challenge that remains is getting those at work who review our website updates to use Safari 5, rather than IE (we’re a Windows company) and stop wasting paper! :-) Shame we have to wait ’til end of summer for the Extensions Site to be available.

How about a way for the web developer to give a default email? That would make it a lot more streamlined.

Here’s an idea, save the notes in local storage to keep for ourselves and have the ability to sync when there’s an internet connection. For local development, allow relative paths to remap to other domains or other development machines. :)

I have no technical competence at all — pure user. Will CodaNotes work with Safari reproductions of pdf pages — like, say, US Supreme Court opinions? With newspaper webpages? Etc. If so, your extension may be hugely useful for people like me, who aren’t interested in web page design but are interested in routinely marking up pages and sending notes to each other about what we read.

This is an awesome tool for developers, and one for an audience that you most likely haven’t thought of…My mom. (Really ALL our moms) Understanding that everyone reading this is a standards compliant, fully optimized, and HTML5-enabled über-whiz…I see another really useful tool here for helping my 60+ mom or sister find EXACTLY what I want her to click on, and look at on a given web site. There’s a whole world of people out there who are less comfortable surfing or clicking (or even finding their way around an over-designed site) b/c of the “scary story they saw on 60 minutes about phishing scams.” This would offer them comfort, and me less time explaining which “Small icon in the top right corner” they should look at. FWIW

It’s possible to permanently fix the Coda Notes bar?

Is it possible in the Safari Extensions API to mess with the cursor icon? (Heh.) Kind of hard to draw with a mouse when the cursor icon is an I-beam.

A crosshairs icon would be awesome when in draw mode. It would also give another context indicator (besides the active Coda Notes toolbar) that this isn’t Kansas anymore.

Perhaps throw an RFE at Apple for such an API addition?

There seems to be some incompatibility with SEO QUAKE which kills Coda Notes.

Also, it appears that there is a vertical limit to the edit feature. I can’t edit beyond a certain number of pixels down a Web page.

this is great! love it! with the prevalence of laptops and trackpads.. and the apple magic trackpad, it would be great to be able to “write/draw” without having to click. then i could just use my finger on the trackpad to scribble. MUCH easier with a trackpad than having to click and scribble.. and, as you may know, writing/drawing with a mouse isn’t much easier..

this could easily be implemented by a toggle button in the coda notes menu that appears, or by using a modifier key on the keyboard.

Found it to be a good tool. Is it possible to write extensions for it? I think it would be a nice to have integration with something like google wave in a box ( http://www.waveprotocol.org/ ), or other social media for that matter.

OK. Correction to prior post. It works, but if you are using Single Processor pages, it does not. You must use a Multiple Processor page. (This is for those folks using the Debug menu and are using the Single Processor page to avoid Safari’s bizarre “sudden tab reload” bug)

I use Safari 6 and when I click send button nothing happen. And I cannot use all types of notes (pen, hightlight, text and notes) on the same page. If I use pen, text doens’t work, if I use hightlight first, pen after that doesn’t work. Maybe I do something wrong? I like your plugin very much. And look forward update :)

Get extensions to customize Safari on Mac

You can install Safari extensions to customize the way your browser works. For example, extensions can help you display social media and news buttons, block content on websites, give you access to features from other apps, and more.

Tip: The Mac App Store is the safest and easiest way to discover and install extensions. The extensions are reviewed by Apple, and they update automatically when Automatic Updates is selected in App Store settings.

When you find one you want, click the button that shows Get or the price, then click the button again to install or buy the extension.

Manage your extensions

Do any of the following:

Turn an extension on or off: Select or deselect the extension’s checkbox.

Note: You get a warning if you turn on an extension that slows down browsing.

Use extensions on your other Apple devices: Select “Share across devices.”

Extensions you install on another Mac are available on your current Mac, where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID , have iCloud set up for Safari , have two-factor authentication turned on, and have “Share across devices” selected in Extensions settings on the other Mac.

Extensions you install on an iPhone or iPad, that are supported on Mac, are also available on your Mac where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID, have Safari turned on in iCloud settings, and have two-factor authentication turned on.

Change an extension’s settings: Select the extension, then select or deselect settings.

Remove an extension: Select the extension, then click Uninstall. Or, delete the app that contains the extension.

Restrict an extension

Choose how much access the extension has.

Extensions may access the content of the webpages you visit. Check which extensions you’ve installed and make sure you’re familiar with what they do. See Change Extensions settings .

Installing or uninstalling extensions, and turning them on or off, may take effect immediately or after you go to a new webpage or refresh the current webpage.

Important: The first time you open Safari, you get warnings about extensions that slow down browsing or are no longer supported:

Extensions that slow down browsing: The extensions are turned off. You can turn on the extensions in Safari settings.

Developer-signed .safariextz-style (legacy) extensions: The extensions don’t load and no longer appear in Safari settings. You can’t turn them on.

The extension portfolio of Safari is still in its nascent stage when compared to  Chrome or Firefox’s extension catalog. After the move to Safari 12, when Apple desecrated the old Safari extensions, developers have been catching up and releasing new extensions for Safari. With the introduction of Safari extension support for iOS and iPadOS, I assume more developers will get on this train. I use Safari for most of my browsing needs, and there are a couple of extensions that help enhance my experience. If you are primarily a Safari user, here are the best Safari extensions you should use in 2022.

Before we see our list of Safari extensions, let's first learn how to uninstall and install Safari extensions. If you already know this, you can use the table of content below to move to the relevant section.

Before the Safari 12 update, you could easily download the installation file, double click on it and the extension would start running on Safari. Now, the steps have become different. You have to specifically enable the extensions even after you have installed them. So follow the steps and learn how you can install and enable Safari extensions:

• All the Safari extensions are now available in the App Store. So, you can either search from them in the App Store or click on the links provided in this article to open the App Store page.
• Once the extension is open in the App Store, install it like you install any other software from the App Store.
• Once installed, open Safari Preferences (⌘,) and click on the "Extensions" tab . Here, enable the extension by clicking on the checkbox. Your extension will now show up in Safari.

Note that since Safari extensions are mini Mac apps, you will have to launch them if they are not set to launch at login. Just click on the extension's icon in Safari and click on the "Run" button.

If you don't want to do this every time you restart your Mac, you have to enable all the extensions as login items. You can do that by either going to each extensions preferences and finding and turning on the "Launch "extension name" for Safari at Login" or going to System Preferences → Users & Groups → Login Items and adding all the extensions one by one by clicking on the "+" button and selecting them.

If you are on the latest macOS Ventura operating system, go to Apple Menu → System Settings → General → Login Items and add the extensions.

To uninstall a Safari extension, launch Safari and open preferences (⌘,). Click on the extension tab and then on the extension you want to uninstall. Here, click on the "Uninstall" button to remove it from Safari.

Let’s start with the first extension that everybody installs on every browser that they use. By the way, if you are not using one right now, you definitely should. The internet is full of knowledge but that knowledge comes with a lot of ads. In some part, we consumers are to blame as it’s in our nature to want to get everything for free. But nothing is free and we all know it. Websites earn money by showing ads on them and while I don’t mind ads as they support the creators, some of them just become greedy and put up too many intrusive ads.

AdGuard AdBlocker can help you block ads from all those mischievous websites. It also blocks the tracking pixels hosted on various websites which are good for your privacy. Don't forget to whitelist the websites which show normal ads to earn money to support their existence. To whitelist a website, open it on your Safari and then click on the AdGuard extension icon. Now, disable it by unchecking the "Enabled on this Website" option.

2. Read it later service extensions

While Safari comes with a built-in “Reading List” feature, Apple has turned a blind eye to it. The feature is half-baked and although it lets you save articles for offline reading (to turn on offline reading go to Preferences → Advanced → Reading List), there’s no way to categorize the articles. There is no search or sorting of articles by websites. If you want all these features and more then you should use a read it later service. And there’s none better than Instapaper and Pocket. Over the years, I have switched between the two apps and like them both.

They both come with an exceptional offline feature that quickly saves your article offline. They both offer iOS apps so you can sync articles across devices. And they both let you search and organize your articles so its easier to find them. All these basic features are available in the free plan. If you want more advanced features like text-to-speech, speed reading, full contextual search, unlimited notes, and more, you can subscribe to their paid plans. Instapaper costs $2.99/month or $29.99/year while Pocket costs more at $4.99/month or $49.99/year.

3. DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials

DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials tool is a great Safari extension for people who want to be safe online. Not only it blocks hidden third-party trackers on the websites you visit but it also gives you a privacy dashboard showing you how enhanced security a website brings. It provides each website with a privacy score that comes in handy when you are deep into your internet research. If a website’s score is too low you will know better than to download files off it or purchase a product. I also love that the extensions also improves the privacy of websites you are visiting wherever possible.

The tracking blocker saves you from being tracked by third-party trackers so you don’t see the same ads everywhere based on your purchase or browsing history. Overall, this is an essential tool you should keep in your bag. Note that this only works with macOS Catalina. As you can see, my download button is greyed out as I have not upgraded my work laptop to macOS Catalina yet. If you have also not upgraded your Mac, you should use the Ghostery Lite extension mentioned below.

4. Honey for Safari

If you want to save money while shopping online then this is the extension that you should install. Honey is a coupon aggregator Safari extension that finds and applies the best coupons at checkout so you can get the best discounts. Honey supports thousands of popular websites including e-commerce websites such as Amazon, Best Buy, and eBay, travel websites like Expedia, food ordering websites like Pizza Hut, and independent brands like Adidas, Macy’s, and more. This is saving done right. The extension sits quietly in the corner and comes to life when you are ordering something saving you tens of dollars every single time.

Another such extension that promises the same features is Rakuten. Rakuten offers both discounts and cashback options. It also searches for the products that you are buying online in other stores to get you the best possible deal. That being said, I have just discovered this extension and am not sure how good it works. You can install it to see which of the two offers you a better deal.

5. Popcorn for Safari

If you are a Netflix subscriber, this is a must-have extension for you. Netflix has a massive catalog of shows and movies, and it’s hard to choose the next show you are going to binge-watch. Popcorn extension for Safari solves this issue by adding IMDb and Metascore ratings on Netflix. All you need to do is install the extension and click on a Netflix title to see it in the expanded view. You will see the IMDb and Metascore ratings of the title, which act as a good indicator of whether the movie or TV show is worth watching or not.

6. Dark Mode for Safari

If you are like me and prefer to browse the web in dark mode at night, you must have this extension. While many websites have incorporated a dark mode view (including ours), there are thousands of websites that do not support dark mode. The Dark Mode extension for Safari forces the content to appear in dark mode. It is useful when browsing the web at night as it makes the reading experience more pleasing to the eyes. You can start the extension manually or schedule it or turn it on automatically when macOS dark mode becomes active. I use the automatic function as it triggers as soon as macOS shifts to dark mode in the evening.

7. Speed Player for Safari

I love the Speed Player extension for Safari as it lets me choose the playback speed for any media on the web. There are several kinds of videos like podcasts, interviews, etc., which can be played at a higher speed while still retaining the legibility of the content. For such videos, you can use the Speed Player extension. It will save a lot of time and help you consume more media than you thought possible.

8. Liner - Web and PDF Highlighter

Liner is a very helpful tool for someone who likes to read and share content on the internet. There are times when we come across articles that are worth sharing, however, we know that nobody is going to read the whole article. What if there was a way to share articles with the most important parts already highlighted. If you have ever used Medium, you will know what I am talking about. Well, Liner brings that functionality to the whole of the internet.

Whenever you are reading an article, click on the Liner extension icon. A dialogue box will open instantly telling you that the “Highlight Mode” is on. Now you can drag and drop any part of the article to highlight the text. The dialogue box will also create a custom link for that article which you can share in any way as you like. Once someone clicks on the link, it will open the article you were reading with all the highlighted lines in place. It’s cool to have if you want to share articles with already highlighted important parts.

Liner also saves all the highlights in your account so you can get back to articles when you want. I have found this handy when doing research for an article or for my work. Not only I collect important articles but all the good parts are already highlighted so I don’t have to re-read the entire article. The extension is free to use with limitations. If you want more features and no limits you can upgrade to the paid plan that costs $95.99/year. That said, the free plan will suffice the needs of most users.

9. Evernote Web Clipper

One of the extensions that I missed most when Safari 12 deprecated the old extension system was the Evernote web clipper. So much of my research depends on collecting articles and links from the web, and Evernote is my go-to choice for saving them. Thankfully, the Evernote web clipper for Safari is finally here. It lets you save web pages, PDFs, and articles from the web into your Evernote account with just a single click. There are many note-taking apps that offer web-clippers, so install the one that corresponds to your note-taking app.

10. Grammarly

Now that we have gotten the reading experience covered, let’s make our writing experience a little better on the web. Grammarly is a popular Safari extension that detects your grammatical mistakes on the fly. Whether you are typing a new email or writing a blog post or bickering on social media, Grammarly will make sure that there are no grammatical mistakes in your write-up. That said, advanced grammatical mistake detection is a paid option, still, the free version is enough to remove the most horrendous mistakes.

The best part about using Grammarly is that once the extension is installed, you don’t need to do anything as it will automatically detect all the fields where you are typing and show you your mistakes and correction. However, once installed, you do need to sign up for the service. Apart from its Safari extension, Grammarly also offers its own macOS , Android , and iOS apps.

11. 1Blocker for Safari

1Blocker is a popular iOS app that gives you an ad-free and tracking-free internet experience on mobile devices. A few months back, the service switched to a subscription model and introduced a Mac app along with a Safari extension. The best thing about 1Blocker is that it gives you a comprehensive list of elements that its blocking and lets you decide the level of blocking. You also get to see a list of everything that it’s blocking.

1Blocker can block ads, tracking pixels, cookie notices, cryptocurrency mining, annoying website widgets, and even comments, if you don’t want to see them. For few bucks a month, you can essentially safeguard yourself from getting tracked across devices and you have full control over it. 12. Turn Off the Lights

Turn Off the Lights is a great little Safari extension which allows you to watch videos on Safari without any distraction. On video streaming websites like YouTube, Vimeo, and more, if you are not using the full-screen mode, there's a ton of distracting elements around that video. Turn off the Light helps you hide those distractive elements by creating a fade over the entire page (see the picture below for reference).

Using the extension is pretty straight forward. Just click on the extension icon when you are watching a video and it will fade the entire background. You can also adjust the color and intensity of the fade among other things. To customize the effect double click on the icon and it will bring the menu. This is a helpful Safari extension and you should check it out.

13. Hover for Safari

Hover is a nifty little extension which allows users to hover over any image, video, or link and see a preview of the content. I use this extension a lot when I am on YouTube as it helps me preview a video before I play it. It saves me a ton of time because I don’t have to go back and forth to see if a video is worth my time or not. The types of content supported by Hover include thumbnail images, links to image galleries, links to videos services, links to images & videos, and links to any website. I won’t say it’s a must-have extension, but it is a useful one.

14. Raindrop.io for Safari

Safari's bookmarking ability is adequate but it's not enough for pro users. If you are someone who creates tons of bookmarks and needs an easy way to store and organize them, you should use Raindrop.io for Safari. It's an excellent bookmark manager which helps you collect article, photos, and videos from the web and organize them into folders and sub-folders. The folders are called "Collections" and you can assign a custom icon to each collection. You can also add tags to individual bookmarks to organize bookmarks which are in different collections. You can also add notes to bookmarks.

Finally, if you like to share your bookmarks with your colleagues or your family, you can do that by sharing your collections. Since Raindrop.io also has mobile ( iOS / Android ) and web ( visit ) apps, you can access your bookmarks from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection. Note that while Raindrop.io offers a premium version, all the essential features like creating unlimited bookmarks and collections, sharing, supported for unlimited devices, and more are part of the free version.

If there is one service that every internet user should be using, it is password management. Password managers allow you to keep long and secure passwords for all your accounts while ensuring that you never forget any of them and can use them with just one click. No matter which password management service you are using, the point is that you should be using one. Most of these password managers provide their Safari extensions. In a world where we are bombarded with fake news, it's not easy to figure out what we are reading is true or not. Now some of that is our fault as we don't want spends a few seconds to verify the news before reacting to them. That being said, there is a service out there which lets us verify the news that we are reading. NewsGuard is a free Safari extension which adds red and green ratings and labels to websites to show us if they are trustworthy or not. NewsGuard has its team of journalists and analysts who do thorough research and give trust score to all the news websites. It's a tool that you should keep in your arsenal if you don't want to succumb to the onslaught of fake news.

17. SmileAllDay

This extension is for your conscience. Smile Foundation is a charitable organization which works to enhance the condition of children all over the world. We all have donated to some charity from time to time but it's not a regular occurrence and not all of us can afford it. SmileAllDay is a simple extension for Safari which automatically converts Amazon shopping links to Smile's affiliate links. This way, for each purchase that you make, the organization earns something. This enables you to support a good cause without having to donate a dime. Every small bit helps and installing this one Safari extension will make a big difference. It's for a good cause.

18. URL Linker for Safari

URL Linker for Safari is an extension for a super-niche audience who prefer to write their text in markdown. What is does is it allows you to copy a website link in the format of your choice. You can copy the link in markdown format for pasting in   writing apps like Ulysses , Twitter format for sharing on Twitter, and Wiki format. I mostly use this to copy the markdown links for pasting in Logseq (my note-taking app of choice)  or in Ulysess.

19. RSS Button for Safari

This is one of the handiest Safari extensions for RSS readers. This extension allows you to discover RSS feeds of websites when you visit them. From there, you can click on the + button to add that RSS feed to a reader of your choice. It identifies all the feeds a website is offering and lets you select the feed that you want to save. It also detects the RSS reader installed on your Mac and saves the feed in the same. If you have multiple RSS-readers installed, you can select a default option and change it when you want to switch Readers. This is a handy tool to find RSS feeds for websites.

20. about:blank

about:blank is a productivity extension for Safari that lets you block websites. You can select websites to block by URL or use RegEx for creating fine-tuned rules. The best part is that your rules are synced across devices. So, the chances of you cheating are low. You can’t just pick up your iPhone or iPad to access the websites that you blocked on your Mac. Now, I don’t know how helpful these kinds of extensions are, as you can always use a new browser, but if you want to give it a try, go ahead.
