Spirits were high on the final day of the inaugural, three-day Power Trip fest in Indio on Sunday, Oct. 8.

“How’s everybody doing,” Metallica vocalist James Hetfield asked the crowd, which seemed to swell to maximum capacity on Sunday as there was a sea of fans in black shirts — mostly Metallica shirts — as far as the eye could see.

Hetfield noted that it had been a hot three days — temperatures were over 100 degrees each day, barely dipping into the high 80s well after sunset  — and he saw people partying hard to the other acts, which included Iron Maiden and Guns N’ Roses on Friday, Oct. 6 , Judas Priest and AC/DC on Saturday, Oct. 7 and Los Angeles rock band Tool  kicked off the final evening with a heavy, moody set on Sunday.

“We, Metallica, have been here since Friday celebrating with our heroes,” he continued. And that wasn’t just a line. Metallica’s official Instagram feed is filled with photos of the various members of the band hanging out backstage with the other artists and rocking out in the pit along to AC/DC.

Much like they’ve been doing out on their M72 World Tour, which had just sold out two evenings at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood back in August, Metallica delivered a diverse setlist, specially curated by its anchor Lars Ulrich for the evening, according to bassist Rob Trujillo during our interview ahead of Power Trip .

They wasted no time getting the crowd going with back-to-back high-energy tracks, blasting through “Whiplash” followed swiftly by “Creeping Death.” It was so loud and powerful that it shook the Earth beneath our feet, and at times Ulrich’s rapid-fire drumming felt strong enough to make our hearts flutter with the rhythm. “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Enter Sandman” came next with equal urgency and fire.

Speaking of fire, it was lovely for Hetfield to acknowledge these fans had been sweating it up for three days in the desert, but then the band’s pyro was mighty enough to roast everyone in the sprawling pit area and back into the first few dozen so rows of seating. It was quite the display of firepower and we’d expect nothing less from genre giants like Metallica.

The band slipped in two new songs, “Lux Æterna” and “Too Far Gone?” before Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett joined forces to debut an instrumental jam they had just worked out for this occasion. The two-minute song was dubbed “Funk in the Desert.”

“Think of this as street musicians playing for you,” Trujillo told the crowd before the duo ripped into the funky little tune.

“Fade to Black” was up next. It’s the band’s first power ballad, and the group continues to highlight the song as it’s about suicide and mental health.

“If you’re feeling the darkness, talk to your friends, please,” Hetfield encouraged mid-song.

They brought the energy back up with “Fuel” and more pyro, before the psychedelic-sounding instrumental “Orion,” which they dedicated to their late bassist Cliff Burton.

Though Hammett flubbed the intro to “Nothing Else Matters,” he owned up to his mistake, saying, “It’s really hot in this (expletive) desert,” he laughed and was seen on screen sweating profusely. As he continued his solo intro, Ulrich grabbed a towel and started fanning him. The rest of the song went swimmingly.

The guys powered through a crushing “Sad But True,” “The Day That Never Comes” and “Hardwired” before a three-song encore that included “Seek & Destroy,” “One” and the closer, “Master of Puppets.”

Hetfield said that the band had been around 42 years and they didn’t take moments like this one, with an entire field of fans screaming, singing and dancing all night long, for granted. He also noted that the other bands on the Power Trip lineup had “helped Metallica become Metallica.”

Though they’re both heavy rockers, Metallica and Tool are two totally different vibes. Where Metallica is very much lit up and in-your-face, Tool is shrouded in darkness and a slower, moodier build. Tool, led by vocalist Maynard James Keenan , went on just after sunset and utilized the massive screens not to showcase themselves, but their creepy-psychedelic visuals that go along with each multi-layered song.

The band vibrated the entire venue coming out with “Jambi,” before slipping into “The Pot” and jamming through one of its latest songs, the 10-minute “Fear Inoculum.” For that song, we sat down on the grass in the pit. My friend described it as like being in a sound bath, which was spot on: a transcendental moment in the desert, under a blanket of stars.

A man of few words in between songs, Keenan did tell the audience, “You all look great and smell delicious.” I have to disagree with that. By day three, folks were getting pretty ripe at Power Trip.

The players in Tool are masters of their craft. Guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor, much like the members of Metallica, showcased why they’d earned a spot on this lineup of genre legends during “Pushit,” “Pneuma,” “Swamp Song,” as well as the fan-favorite hit “Stinkfist” and show closer, “Ænema.”

Metallica

“This is a celebration!” proclaimed Metallica’s James Hetfield midway through the band’s set at the first-ever all-metal “Power Trip” festival . His comment was actually an understatement: While major metal festivals have been staged for decades, this one placed six of the world’s most legendary heavy metal and hard rock bands in history on one stage at the Polo Grounds in Indio, Calif. — home of Coachella festival and, of course, “Desert Trip,” the similarly billed 2016 classic-rock super-festival that featured Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Roger Waters, Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

Popular on Variety

If you’re thinking the crowd consisted largely of aging Beavis’ and Buttheads, you’re not wrong: One very awesome official tee shirt featured that duo headbanging on site, and the “newest” group in the lineup, Tool, released their first EP 31 years ago. And though many metalheads’ dreams of collaborations and reunions with past band members didn’t come to fruition, the fest was a testament to what nearly all of these long-running acts do best: hard-rocking classics and stage shows filled with various forms of over-the-toppedness, and with two acts playing per day to allow for proper headlining sets.

Worse, Guns N’ Roses, who have essentially been on one long tour since three key members reunited in 2016, played an over-long three-hour set that would have been much stronger if it was tighter. And while lead guitarist Slash has never sounded better, the same can’t be said for singer Axl Rose, whose vocals were inconsistent, perhaps due to the dry desert air.

Thankfully, rock valhalla arrived on day 2: Judas Priest and AC/DC were undeniable highlights of the weekend, with the former relentlessly blasting through hits like “A Touch Of Evil” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” with full confidence and a sound-mix that showed off 72-year old singer Rob Halford’s near-operatic range, which he somehow delivered in a series of leather outfits despite the 90-degree-plus heat. Founding guitarist Glenn Tipton, who is suffering from Parkinsons’ Disease, joined the band for their encore, a family-minded move that was clearly relished by the band and their fans.

The nearly sold-out crowd was swelling with flashing red devil horns by the time AC/DC took the stage for their first show since 2016, reuniting with singer Brian Johnson (who took a leave of absence that year for hearing related problems) and slammed the field with a 24-song set that included nearly every song a fan could hope for: “Back in Black,” “Dirty Deeds,” “Hell’s Bells,” “For Those About To Rock,” “You Shook Me All Night Long,” “High Voltage,” “Highway to Hell,” and many more, delivering a great reminder that they’re among the most influential rock bands of all time.

The final day was an ode to two different brands of intensity, with Tool — an outlier in the lineup, as they’re more associated with the ‘90s alt-rock movement than classic metal — playing a preposterously loud, overly ambitious set of their proggy, moody ear-blasts amid surreal psychedelic videos depicting skeletons, body parts, and shape-shifting aliens. Sadly, they do a disservice to fans further back by not allowing close-ups of them playing to appear on the video screens, leaving the audience to wonder whether all of those drum sounds come from superhuman skin-pounder Danny Carey (spoiler from the front: they do).

Power Trip was billed as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see all these high-level heavy bands at once, and though there were some squandered opportunities to make the sets themselves stand out from what each of these bands does night after night on tour, devil horns were raised, countless beers were consumed, and ears were blown: a success by any suitable metric.

Metallica and Tool at Power Trip Festival: Watch Footage of Their Epic Sets

Yellow image of the metal band Metallica

Watch footage of Metallica and Tool closing out Power Trip Festival

Call it the heavy metal version of Coachella. The inaugural Power Trip Festival rolled into the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, last weekend, serving up heavy sounds to tens of thousands of music fans. The show, which took place in the same spot as the annual Coachella, featured a handful of big-named acts to the event, including AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica and Tool. The latter two bands wrapped up the evening on Sunday (Oct. 8) with pummeling sets.

The show kicked off Friday (Oct. 6) with headlining sets from Iron Maiden and Guns N’ Roses . The following night, on Saturday (Oct. 7), the guys of AC/DC performed their first show in seven years, and Judas Priest announced their new album and rocked a full set.

Then, it was time for Metallica and Tool. What’s interesting is that this festival was heavy on classic metal names. It was even originally supposed to feature Ozzy Osbourne, but he had to drop off due to health concerns. So, Tool was, by far, the “youngest” band on the bill. Are Tool classic yet? We’re not sure, but they’re getting there, at least when you look at the history of progressive metal.

Tool were up first on Sunday at Empire Polo Club. They weren’t a stranger to the venue, as they had performed there at the inaugural Coachella festival in 1999 and Coachella again in 2006. The band launched into their 2006 hit “Jambi,” off their album “10,000 Days,” which arrived that same year. From there, Maynard James Keenan and company went on to perform 12 songs spanning their entire career, including tracks from their debut album, “Undertow,” up through their most recent release, 2019’s “Fear Inoculum.” The set was heavy on favorites, which is just how fans like it.

Then, it was time for the kings of metal, Metallica. The band closed out the event with a lengthy set, consisting of 16 songs from nine of their 11 albums. Fans didn’t have to worry about only hearing new songs off Metallica’s latest album, “72 Seasons,” either. The band gave fans a treat, performing all the hits into a compact evening of heavy metal and thrash. A few highlights included “Creeping Death,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Enter Sandman,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “Seek & Destroy.”

One funny moment came with Hammett seemed to mess up the intro to “Nothing Else Matters,” which has happened before on the band’s latest “M72 World Tour.” He may have been embarrassed, but it’s nice to see the human element of a rock star once in a while. At Power Trip, he exclaimed, “Sorry, guys. I did it again. I screwed it up again. I’m gonna play it again for you… You know, it’s really hot in this fucking desert.”

Metallica closed out the night with a medley consisting of “Seek & Destroy,” “One” and “Master of Puppets.” Really, Metallica were a fitting final act for this event. They’re arguably the biggest heavy metal band in the world, and the goal of Power Trip seemed to be highlighting the biggest and best heavy music on the planet. Not word yet on if Power Trip will return in 2024, but considering the festival sold out in a jiffy, our bet is yet. Watch video of both Metallica and Tool below.

Following their Power Trip performance, Metallica will continue on their “M72 World Tour” in November, and that tour will take them into 2024. Likewise, Tool recently embarked on their fall 2023 North American tour, which will keep them on the road through the end of this year.

Power Trip: Coachella Valley locals say Goldenvoice's metal festival is 'too expensive'

power trip festival sold out

When the Power Trip music festival was announced in April, metal fans around the world were excited for the three-day festival featuring the heaviest and most legendary names of the genre.

To advertise Power Trip, Goldenvoice put up several billboards around the Los Angeles area — including one near the Sunset Strip's legendary Rainbow Bar & Grill — and released a 30-second TV commercial featuring '90s MTV cartoon characters Beavis and Butthead.

But the excitement surrounding the Oct. 6-8 event waned when festival passes went on sale. In recent weeks, it appeared the premium seating in front of the stage and in the grandstands at $799 to $3,899 was selling, but more seats were recently added. GA passes are also still available at $599.

So why didn’t this event featuring Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica and Tool sell out instantly?

More: Judas Priest to replace Ozzy Osbourne at PowerTrip metal festival in Indio

Sean Cox, the owner of Finders Keepers Records in La Quinta and a former Live Nation ticketing representative for venues in Irvine and San Diego, said it's "too expensive."

"I’m hearing from my sources in the ticketing industry that this show is not doing well at all. I think what Goldenvoice is going to have to do to make its money back is reduce the ticket prices or sell single-day tickets," Cox said. “It’s priced as such that only baby boomers and Gen-Xers with money can afford to buy these tickets for themselves or their kids. The audience that will keep this music alive for the next 20 years can’t go see Ozzy Osbourne for the last time."

"That’s what upsets me about this industry," he added. "It’s always been greedy, but now it’s stupidly cutting off the majority of the audience because they can’t afford the ticket price.”

Dale Myers, owner of Dale’s Records in Palm Desert, said many of his customers are “stoked” about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a local festival featuring prominent metal bands, but added that they also feel priced-out.

“They don’t like the fact it costs $600 to stand in the back and watch it on a huge monitor when they can watch it on YouTube and pay $10 for a six-pack instead of $10 for a (single) beer. It is an older crowd, they have money, but they want to have fun too, and don’t want to be in the back.”

Myers has a point. Large international metal festivals such as Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany; the Graspop Metal Meeting in Dessel, Belgium; and the Download Festival held at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England don’t have seating in front of the stage.

“If I had $600, wanted to see Ozzy Osbourne and this was one of the last times to see him, I wouldn’t want to sit back and watch him. I think it’s a little unfair and greedy,” Myers said.

Festivals are on the decline

As we head into a post-pandemic era, music festivals are on the decline. This year, for example, was the first time the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival's Weekend 2 wasn't sold out since Goldenvoice added a second weekend in 2012. A 2022 Wall Street Journal article examined many issues facing promoters of festivals such as the rising ticket costs, an “oversaturation of events" and featuring many of the same artists on lineups.

In recent years, festivals have offered more upscale experiences for affluent demographics. Coachella offers a $15,000 package featuring on-site furnished studio accommodations, premium passes, golf cart transportation, concierge services and more.

“These experiences at Coachella where you can pay $10,000 for a private dinner with a chef and these other things, it’s going to be more unhinged because less people have more money, and those people that have money, it’s ‘f*ck you money’ and they’re willing to spend it. That’s where the industry is going now and who they’re catering to," Cox said.

Another reason could be two of the bands also have scheduled performances in the Southern California region ahead of Power Trip. Metallica is performing on Aug. 25 and 27 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles as part of the band's "M72 World Tour," and Guns N' Roses is performing on Oct. 1 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

Power Trip is also happening during the same weekend as the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, which also features headliners Tool and Guns N' Roses. According to Loudwire, the four-day festival at Discovery Park set attendance records last year, attracting 160,000 metal fans and bringing $30 million to the region .

But some locals did express excitement to The Desert Sun in April upon news of Goldenvoice's official foray into metal.

Indio Councilmember Glenn Miller said he grew up listening to some of the bands on the Power Trip lineup and called the festival a "great attraction to our valley," adding that the local area is becoming a "music mecca" with the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals, the entertainment offerings at the local casinos and the addition of the Acrisure Arena.

Local metal fanatic Xan Abyss, who was also in the defunct local band Rogue Ogre, said he's "excited" with the idea of a Goldenvoice-produced festival featuring metal bands after the 2016 fall festival Desert Trip at the Empire Polo Club featuring Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, The Who and Roger Waters.

"For a long time, I've ranted and raved about what a glorious opportunity it would be, not just culturally but commercially, to have something like this here," Xan Abyss said. "Desert Trip was a big deal and a game changer when it came around. People were arguing for a couple of years about who would be on the lineup of the next Desert Trip and after two or three bands, you start to answer into the territory of metal and those legacy acts, because that's where a lot of the legacies are."

More: ‘There’s a need for it’: Is Power Trip a sign of hope for a struggling desert metal scene?

Eagles of Death Metal frontman Jesse Hughes, who grew up in Palm Desert, said in an April interview that the Power Trip lineup is "awesome" and hoped there would be an event such as this in the local area, but added "In terms of metal, I thought every gravestone in Indian Wells would roll over before that would happen."

"The fact this is happening is a true testament to the reality that attitudes change between generations," Hughes said.

At Power Trip, Guns N’ Roses ditches spectacle as it polishes the messy past

Axl Rose has history at the Empire Polo Club.

In 2016, the Guns N’ Roses frontman reunited with the core members of his menacing and flamboyant hard rock band to headline Coachella, the annual desert mega-festival that goes down on this grassy expanse two hours east of Los Angeles.

He returned last year for a surprise drop-in with Carrie Underwood , of all people, at Coachella’s country-music counterpart, Stagecoach.

Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses performs onstage.

Late Friday, Guns N’ Roses was back in Indio for the first night of Power Trip, a three-day heavy-metal(-ish) blowout that also features Metallica, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Tool, and to mark the occasion, Rose, 61, relayed the heartwarming fact that the incident described in GNR’s song “Double Talkin’ Jive” really happened.

“True story,” he told the crowd after guitarist Slash took a long, snarling solo. “Found a head and an arm in a trash can behind the studio.”

Guns N' Roses performs on stage with vibrant lights.

Guns N’ Roses’ Coachella comeback was notoriously hamstrung by Rose’s injury; he broke his foot just days before the fest during a warm-up gig at the Troubadour, forcing the most kinetic of rock singers to perform while seated in a throne he borrowed from Foo Fighters ’ Dave Grohl (who’d used it himself after breaking his leg).

Seven years and dozens of stadium concerts later, the band — with OG bassist Duff McKagan along with keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese, guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Frank Ferrer — has become a well-oiled machine. Its three-hour Power Trip set moved efficiently through nearly 30 songs, including such genre-defining hits as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” “You Could Be Mine,” “Patience,” “Paradise City” and the crowning achievement of hard rock’s greatest ballad singer, “ November Rain .”

Metallica, a stadium warhorse, freshens its onslaught at SoFi

At the second of two sold-out shows, heavy metal stalwarts Metallica challenged themselves and their audience, with thunderous results.

Aug. 28, 2023

For that one, Rose, who spent most of the evening crisscrossing Power Trip’s enormous stage in a succession of black T-shirts, slipped on a sparkly silver jacket and sat down behind a grand piano on a bench designed to resemble a motorcycle.

But if the polish and athleticism of GNR’s performance here was impressive — for what it’s worth, Rose looked quite a bit trimmer than he did even 18 months ago at Stagecoach — the show also felt a bit standard-issue: just another gig for a hard-working rock band rather than the one-off spectacle its setting might’ve led some to hope for. The same largely went for Iron Maiden, which preceded Guns N’ Roses on Friday with a very solid version of its current arena production. (Goldenvoice, the promoter that puts on these Indio festivals, refused to disclose the size of the crowds at Power Trip, though the number is well into the tens of thousands.)

A shirtless fan with his tongue out looks at the camera at Power Trip.

Any sense of disappointment wasn’t merely tied to the specific expectations raised by Power Trip, which serves as a sequel of sorts to Desert Trip, the 2016 boomer-palooza that brought together the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney , Bob Dylan and other legends of 1960s rock. The challenge GNR faces as a newly stable legacy act is how to tap into the mayhem and the bad attitudes that once defined the band — and made it such a thrill — without letting them derail the whole thing as often happened in the old days.

Thus Rose’s recollection of the grisly events of “Double Talkin’ Jive.”

Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden performs on stage in glasses that resemble goggles.

The tradeoff for all this professionalization was the not-unwelcome opportunity to remember how peculiar GNR’s music is: the knotty structure of a psychotic blues like “Coma,” the overwhelming forward drive of “You Could Be Mine,” the disarming tenderness of “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” with its image of a lover’s reassuring hair. “Paradise City” and “Welcome to the Jungle” made a case for Slash as the most melodically gifted soloist in hard rock, while “Mr. Brownstone” made you wonder who Rose thought he was fooling when he wrote a lyric about waking up around 7 a.m.

Along with the hits, the band played a couple of unremarkable new tunes as well as some from “Chinese Democracy,” the better-than-you-recall 2008 LP that Rose spent more than a decade working on before he invited Slash and McKagan back into the fold. As he sang the title track — Rose’s vocals were strong Friday, if less flexible than they used to be — the singer’s blue-green eyes glinted with a little of his signature indignation, as though what could still get him riled up was the prospect of being underrated.

Axl Rose and Slash of Guns N' Roses perform onstage.

GNR also peppered the show with covers: not just its hit renditions of Wings’ “Live and Let Die,” which Rose dedicated to McCartney as the song turned 50, and Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” which got a funky white-reggae breakdown, but punk oldies by U.K. Subs and the Stooges and a deeply earnest take on Jimmy Webb’s “Wichita Lineman.”

That late-’60s easy-listening classic might not have seemed to share much with the rest of Guns N’ Roses’ presentation on Friday. Then again, it’s about a guy just doing his job.

It may be the biggest North American rock festival ever

Power Trip Festival 2023 Goldenvoice

UPDATED: July 11, 2023

The stacked lineup for the all-new festival Power Trip is here. Earlier this week, headliners Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC,  Tool , and  Guns N’ Roses all teased the festival on their official social media. Now, the full lineup is officially confirmed for what may very well be the biggest hard rock festival ever in North America.

On Monday, July 10, Ozzy Osbourne revealed that he would no longer be performing at Power Trip. On Tuesday, July 11, it was announced that British metal icons Judas Priest would be stepping in for Ozzy. Priest will now play opposite AC/DC on Saturday, October 7.

Check out the full lineup artwork below.

Goldenvoice, the company behind Coachella, Stagecoach, Cruel World, and more will be putting on Power Trip. The festival will take place in Indio, California at the Empire Polo Grounds (home of Coachella) on October 6 through October 8, 2023.

After announcing his  retirement from touring  back in February, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ozzy Osbourne has recently expressed his desire to still perform at some capacity in the future. Commercially, Ozzy is enjoying the fruits of his widely successful album  Patient No. 9 . He won two GRAMMY® Awards at the 65th annual event in Los Angeles last month. He took home the hardware for Best Metal Performance and Best Rock Album. It marked the metal legend’s first solo GRAMMY® win since 1994 when he won Best Metal Performance for “I Don’t Wanna Change the World ( Live & Loud ).

“I’m one lucky motherfucker to have won the Best Rock Album Grammy,” the now a five-time GRAMMY® Award winner exclaimed. “I was blessed to work with some of the greatest musicians in the world and Andrew Watt as my producer on this album. Winning the Best Metal Performance was equally gratifying being that the song featured my longtime friend and Black Sabbath bandmate, Tony Iommi.”

Metallica’s upcoming eleventh studio LP  72 Seasons  arrives on April 14 via the band’s own Blackened Recordings. Produced by Greg Fidelman with frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and clocking in at over 77 minutes, the 12-track  72 Seasons  is Metallica’s first full length collection of new material since 2016’s  Hardwired…To Self-Destruct . The album will be released in formats including 2LP 140-gram black vinyl and limited edition variants, CD and digital download.

Additionally, Metallica are  returning to the road  this summer. The band previously announced their M72 Word Tour which will see the band perform back-to-back nights at each stop with no repeat performances. In each city, special guests on Night One will be Pantera and Mammoth WVH. Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills will serve as support on Night 2. Tickets are on sale now  HERE .

Iron Maiden brought their Legacy of the Beast Tour back to North American last year for another massive run. The band’s latest album  Senjutsu  arrived in 2021. The album peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.

In 2020, AC/DC released their seventeenth studio album  Power Up . The record peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world. Once again, Angus and Malcolm Young’s nephew Stevie Young, who took over rhythm guitar duties for Malcolm after his passing in 2017. AC/DC have not toured since their Rock or Bust trek wrapped up in 2016.

Tool have a number of festival appearances slated for 2022, including a headlining slot at Aftershock. Last summer, they released their GRAMMY®-Award winning fifth album  Fear Inoculum  as a new black vinyl set via RCA Records. The 3-disc 180 gram set on black vinyl features new artwork by guitarist Adam Jones. It comes in a triple gatefold jacket and an exclusive 12″ x 36″ double-sided poster. Last March, Tool released a re-imagined version of “Opiate,” the title track from their first EP. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their first commercially-available release, the band re-worked and extended the song –  “Opiate 2 “  – with an accompanying short film.

Guns N’ Roses are embarking on a massive world tour this summer. The North American leg runs through October 16m making stops in Boston, Chicago, Nashville, Charlotte, Vancouver, and more. The band is also returning to Hersheypark Stadium in Pennsylvania for the first U.S. show of the tour. They previously kicked off their We’re F’N Back! Tour there back in 2021. Revisit our review and live photos from the show  HERE .

Last year, Guns N’ Roses came out with a a new EP  Hard Skool . The record was released nearly a year ago on February 25, 2022. It was the first time in 28 years that vocalist Axl Rose, guitarist Slash, and bassist Duff McKagan collaborated together on new material together.

The trio was accompanied on the new studio effort by the current members of the GNR lineup, which is completed by guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Frank Ferrer, as well as keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese. The EP featured live recordings of the band’s ‘91 power ballad “Don’t Cry” and “You’re Crazy” from their seminal debut LP  Appetite For Destruction .

Released back in August of 2021, the single “Absurd “ was the first new Guns N’ Roses song in 13 years.

Fresh off their  50th anniversary celebrations , Judas Priest are reportedly working on music for the follow-up to their acclaimed 2018 album  Firepower . The record is the band’s biggest commercial success, charting at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart and Billboard 200 as well as hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart. After delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Judas Priest toured relentlessly to celebrate the success of Firepower and the band’s five decades of heavy metal.

Happy Thursday!

This week’s edition of Festival Pass is going to be short and sweet. I’ll be honest, I’m tired!

Goldenvoice’s three-day  Power Trip fest out at the Empire Polo Club in Indio on Oct. 6-8 kicked my butt. My ears are still ringing after taking in sets by  Iron Maiden , Guns N’ Roses , AC/DC , Judas Priest , Tool and Metallica.

It was just two bands playing extended sets each day on a single, yet massive, stage. So, it wasn’t nearly the grind of other multi-stage festivals at that venue, including Coachella and Stagecoach . But if you were there or live in the Coachella Valley, you know we were blessed — or cursed — with temperatures in the 100s all weekend long and we weren’t lucky enough to experience the typical nighttime desert cool down. So the heat mixed with the long walking trek into and out of the venue each day finally got to me, after managing to survive a total of four three-day festivals out there in 2023.

However, Power Trip was awesome.

Each day had a slightly different vibe, but that back-to-back Saturday lineup with Judas Priest and AC/DC felt so incredibly special. Just witnessing these giants of metal and rock and roll crushing it with hits and fan favorites felt historical. Overall, it was a celebration of these often overlooked genres with acts in peak form. Also the fans, who were from all over the world, were incredible. They were so nice and this particular festival seemed to lack all the social media influencers that typically flock to the Empire Polo Club for other events — these were true fans through and through.

It was spectacular fun and left diehard metal heads wondering if there will be a Power Trip II. We shall see.

Here’s a look back at our coverage:

Day 1: Power Trip: Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden kick things off in the desert

Day 2:  Power Trip: AC/DC and Judas Priest do it right in Indio

Day 3:  Power Trip: Metallica and Tool close out the festival with fiery performances

Here’s what else is going on in the Southern California music scene.

👩🏼‍🎤 Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” movie hits theaters on Friday

Movie theaters across the country are preparing for the Swiftie takeover as Taylor Swift ‘s “The Eras Tour” concert film hits screens on Friday, Oct. 13. Filmed during her first three out of a total of six sold-out evenings at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood back in August, Swift’s tour — which is still ongoing — is a record-setting pop cultural phenomenon that has broken Ticketmaster twice now with initial on sales.

The demand was so overwhelming that going to see the action in a theater is probably the best and most affordable way to get in on the fun, or to relive the event if you’re already missing having experienced Taylormania live.

Coachella '24: A first timer's guide to merch, packing, set times and other festival info

D onning a coveted Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival wristband for the first time this year? Exciting! But there are some things you should know about attending — and getting the most out of — the famed festival.

From navigating the grounds to making purchases, we have you covered on what you need to know to have an unforgettable weekend.

Here are five things to know about attending Coachella for the first time.

1. Know where you're going at the Empire Polo Club, and prepare to walk far

Even though the Empire Polo Fields is a beautiful setting, it’s very large, so it can be strenuous and taxing to navigate during the festival. Plan accordingly for a long day with plenty of walking from the parking areas to the gates, and back and forth between stages.

The official Coachella app features a map of the festival site, schedule, list of food vendors and more. It'll also notify you when a set is about to start, if there are any weather advisories in the area, etc. However, as capacity increases, it’s difficult to receive text messages or access specific information on the app because the signal weakens, so taking some screenshots on the app ahead of time is a good idea.

Passholders with disabilities can access the festival’s ADA department for services such as transportation to and from the parking areas, and viewing platforms at each stage.

For those who need to bring medical-related items such as prescribed insulin for diabetes, identify yourself to security at the gate and medical staff will provide an area to secure all items. You may need to provide medical documentation detailing use and necessity.

2. When packing your Coachella bag, prepare for the desert weather

This year, the forecast for Weekend 1 calls for a high temperature of around 90 degrees on Friday, but conditions are expected to cool into the 80s on Saturday and down to the mid-70s by Sunday, as a weather system moves into the west coast, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Casey Oswant.

While rain is not in the forecast, the main impact from the storm system will be gusty winds, as high as 30 miles per hour. "We are expecting the winds to really pick up on Friday," Oswant said. "The peak of the winds will be Friday evening into early Saturday."

For those with seasonal allergies, there’s natural irritants in the air such as sand, pollens and bales of hay positioned around the site (both at Coachella and at Stagecoach, but the hay is more Stagecoach specific). A good face covering can go a long way during a windstorm or that walk out to the car as the dirt kicks up into the air.

It’s best to prepare for anything when it comes to the climate, so to stay comfortable, wear a hat for sun protection during the day and tie a jacket around your waist to keep from shivering once the sun goes down.

If you forgot something important like shades, a bandana or sunscreen, you can always purchase it on the grounds at one of the various General Stores marked on the map.

3. Build a schedule so you can maximize your time at Coachella

Performances at a music festival are exciting, and there’s many going on at once. One of the unfortunate realities of attending Coachella, however, is scheduling conflicts and limited capacity at some of the stages, which means there’s no guarantee of catching everyone on your list.

Each stage has a schedule and is required to run on time. Even though it’s tempting to cram as many sets into your daily schedule as possible moving between stages, you might only see 5-15 minutes of each performance.

Speaking from personal experience, it’s best to focus on the sets you want to see in entirety and make the difficult decisions in a conflict. By the time you leave one performance for another, you might have missed a special guest or the song you wanted to hear might have already been performed.

The food vendors are busiest during the evening hours from 6 to 9 p.m., and if you don’t want to spend a lot of time in line away from performances, plan meals accordingly.

4. Want to buy Coachella merch? Prepare to stand in line — or go super early

If you’re hoping to score that Lana Del Rey T-shirt or Coachella hoodie, prepare to stand in line. The last couple years, the traditional merch booth was packed an hour after the festival grounds opened (same for Stagecoach and Power Trip). There is no guarantee the item you want, or the size, will be in stock when you reach the front, so browse the options displayed on the wall while standing in line.

One tip, if you're OK with some items being sold out by the time you get there, is to wait until the last day of your weekend to get your merch. In 2022, the lines were busiest during the first two days of each weekend, and because many people had their merch by day 3, when gates opened on Sunday, the lines were much shorter (but the later in the day it is, the less luck you'll have, so do it first thing that afternoon).

More: Coachella ticket sales are sluggish. Are changing music industry, festival trends to blame?

5. Don't forget to bring your debit/credit card, phone charger and empty water bottle with you to the Coachella festival grounds

There’s something to know before you buy that slice of pizza or strawberry lemonade: Coachella is a cashless event, so you’ll need to bring a debit and/or credit card to make purchases, or use Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Wallet or other contactless cards.

If you're looking for somewhere to charge your phone so you can keep in touch with friends, follow along on the Coachella app or simply Instagram to your heart's content, look for the blue pyramid-like structures with several people standing around them scattered throughout the grounds. (And be patient, because you're one of literally thousands of people with a dying phone battery.)

Also, please don't forget to bring a refillable water bottle — but NOT a metal one, you will be forced to throw it away. There are water stations scattered throughout the grounds that are clearly marked with large signs and also marked on the official Coachella map, which you can see on the app or grab a print version of upon entering the festival and seeking out an information tent.

35 thousand tickets sold, Wanderson's return and Ari's advice: how Krasnodar prepares for the Champions League debut

2019-08-06T21:15:55.580Z

power trip festival sold out

Less than a day is left before the debut of Krasnodar in the Champions League. The press service of the team said that the match of the third qualifying round with Porto will be held in full stands. Head coach Sergei Matveev said that the Russian team expects to impose its game and will not focus on the opponent, and striker Ari admitted that he was glad to return to the main European tournament.

Less than a day remains until the meeting of the third qualifying round of the Champions League, in which Krasnodar will host Porto at home. The whole city is actively preparing for the debut of the team at such a high level, and many fans expressed a desire to personally observe the historical confrontation. According to the press service of the bulls, all the seats in the stands of the stadium of the same name (and there are more than 35 thousand) were sold out, and 15 thousand tickets were sold on the first day of sales.

However, the flip side is also present with such a great stir: some speculators offer tickets for an amount seven times higher than the initial cost. Employees of the stadium and the police were involved in the fight against them.

At the same time, a big football festival, accompanied by recreational activities in public places, will not interfere with the normal life of the city. It is reported that 333 law enforcement officers will follow the order on the day of the meeting.

Football players of the Portuguese team arrived in Krasnodar on the eve and have already managed to explore the city. In particular, they walked along the main street of Krasnaya, famous for its museums, theaters and architectural monuments.

💪Bom dia, Krasnodar # FCPorto # UCL # FCKFCPpic.twitter.com / Vrd66ivsx6

“We will proceed from our strengths”

In anticipation of the debut in the Champions League, the head coach of Krasnodar Sergey Matveev answered questions from journalists. He talked about the team’s readiness for a meeting with Porto, and also drew a parallel with the match of the fourth round of the RPL, in which it tied with the St. Petersburg Zenit.

- In what condition is Krasnodar coming to a meeting with Porto?

- Everything is in order with the team. We were satisfied with the result of the match with Zenit. We understand that the city is waiting for the upcoming game, all tickets are sold out. We are ready for it.

- Midfielder Vanderson missed the meeting of the fourth round of the championship of Russia. Will he take to the field tomorrow?

- Yes, the Brazilian had a slight temperature, but he is already training with us and is likely to take part in tomorrow's match.

- Probably, Porto will actively press Krasnodar across the entire width of the field. What do you intend to counter this?

- In the game with Zenit, there were some nuances that did not suit us. We are trying to eliminate them. We are aware that Porto is a difficult team, so we will try to use our strengths. Of course, they will do the same. Therefore, let’s see who better to cope with their task.

- Will it be an advantage for you that for Porto tomorrow's match will be the first of the season?

- Yes, we have already held several meetings in the championship of Russia, and perhaps this will really be of help to us. But I would not dare to talk about it with complete confidence.

- “Krasnodar” practices attacking football, although sometimes the second game brought a positive result. Is it worth it to move away from familiar tactics?

- No, I do not think so. We will proceed from our strengths and try to impose our game. We do not plan to focus on Porto.

- Many called the match with Zenit a rehearsal for Porto. What is the similarity between the two teams?

- Indeed, in the game Porto resembles Zenit. They quickly go on the attack, using medium and long gears. It was a good rehearsal because the meeting turned out to be tense. The team suffered in those moments when something did not work out. It will help us tomorrow too.

“Happy to play the Champions League again”

Forward “Krasnodar” Ari also shared his expectations from the upcoming match and told what parting words he gives to his teammates.

- What can you say about Porto?

- I know that this is a strong team, so the result of the meeting will depend entirely on us. Krasnodar has the opportunity to hold the first match at home, where our fans will support us. Therefore, it is important to achieve a positive result.

- How will the experience of the Portuguese help them in tomorrow's game?

- Porto regularly plays in the Champions League. But we will adhere to the tactics that the head coach will tell us.

- You are one of the leaders of Krasnodar. What role will you play tomorrow?

- For me, the most important thing is to be on the field and help my team. I don’t know what composition will be playing for Porto, but I am always at the disposal of the head coach, no matter what decision he makes. Without exception, all football players are ready to demonstrate what they are capable of.

- You have more experience in the Champions League than your teammates. What would you advise them on the eve of tomorrow's meeting?

- I am very happy that I will play in this tournament once again, and I am glad that I am part of Krasnodar. I’m trying to convey to partners that this is a very important competition in which everyone wants to speak. Therefore, you need to show good football in order to achieve something more. We are all ready and extremely concentrated.

While the articles above take a familiar approach in stressing that black-market opportunities result from the failure of state enterprises to produce and sell desired consumer goods, the following article implies a reverse cause-and-effect relationship: The author suggests that the absence of such basic consumer goods as toiletries and cosmetics in state stores in the city of Krasnodar (population-more than 500,000) actually results from the widespread theft of goods to stock a black market that flourishes unimpeded in broad daylight.

Original Source: Literaturnaia gazeta, 25 March 1981, p. 12.

This winter I agreed to undertake an experiment proposed by the editors: I took a plane from Moscow to the resort-area capital of Krasnodar and deliberately left behind all toilet articles-soap, razor, cologne, toothbrush, shaving cream, etc.–and took along no extra underwear or socks or even laundry powder for washing out clothes in my hotel room. The aim of my trip was to investigate reports that such articles were unavailable in Krasnodar stores.

I spent my entire first day in Krasnodar systematically visiting every small, large and medium-sized store in the city in an unsuccessful attempt to buy the articles I had left behind. I did manage to get the last package of razor blades in one department store and I found a child’s toothbrush in another. But that was all. I found no shaving cream soap, shampoo, or any of the other things I needed. When I tried to use the child’s toothbrush the next morning, it broke.

A salesclerk in one Krasnodar store told me that laundry detergent had been available in Novorossiisk two weeks previously, so the next day I went there. I couldn’t find anything I needed in Novorossiisk either, but my neighbor at the hotel there did tell me I could get anything I wanted at the flea market in Krasnodar.

Back in Krasnodar, I went along with a local resident to one of the city’s several unofficial flea markets, which was located on a muddy patch of ground on Yablonovskaya Street. It was an ordinary workday, but the place was thronged with customers. I was struck by the abundance and variety of scarce goods that were being offeredeverything that was unavailable in Krasnodar and Novorossiisk stores. One old crone had enough toilet soap and other scarce goods for sale to fulfill a medium-sized store’s daily sales plan. Another seller broke open a fresh factory carton filled with cellophane- wrapped toothbrushes in assorted colors. Everything cost at least twice as much as it would have cost in the stores, but there was no use haggling. When I protested paying a ruble and 50 kopeks for a bar of toilet soap, the crone told me: “Everything costs what it costs. If you don’t like it, don’t wash.”

The only things I couldn’t find at the flea market were laundry soap and shampoo. One seller explained to me that this was because these were “locally produced goods”-to get them I would have to go to the “black hole.” My companion knew where this was and took me there. The site of the “black hole” turned out to be an ancient brick wall surrounding the Krasnodar Fat and Oil Combine, one of the country’s largest, which produces the excellent-even exported-Turist laundry soap. The wall was pocked with patches of fresh brick and mortar and riddled with new, unpatched holes. A shift had just ended, and employees were pouring through one large hole. My companion approached the first man who came by and said we needed soap. The man immediately said he would get us a box for five rubles-he wouldn’t deal in smaller quantities-and disappeared back through the hole in the wall. Twenty minutes later he returned lugging a heavy box full of soap. My companion suggested we carry our experiment with theft a bit further, so he stuffed his pockets full of soap bars wrapped in newspaper. We dragged the nearly full soapbox back to the plant’s railroad siding where some cars were waiting to be loaded, and then we proceeded to cross the plant grounds and walk out the main gate. Although my companion’s pockets were conspicuously bulging and we were obviously strangers, no one bothered us, including the watchman at the wide-open main gate.

I later visited the office of Iu. L. Belozerov, Deputy Director of the Krasnodar Territory Trade Administration, to discuss the reasons for the shortages in Krasnodar stores. He said it was all the fault of the manufacturers, who, in a desire to fulfill their plans at any cost, overproduced some goods and underproduced others. Yet officials at the Russian Republic Ministry of Trade informed me that the production of soap and detergents had actually been increasing. I also learned that the planned production of consumer goods for a given region such as Krasnodar Territory is based on careful estimates of demand, and that plans for the delivery of personal accessories, toiletries and cosmetics to Krasnodar Territory were not only fulfilled but substantially overfulfilled last year. As it happened, while I was in Belozerov’s office he actually received a telegram saying that, in accordance with statements of requirement, the territory had received 2.7 million toothbrushes in September 1980 alone.

Why, then, are there shortages such as the one I encountered in Krasnodar stores? Another common explanation offered by trade officials is that these shortages are due to hoarding by housewives. I might be inclined to believe this explanation if I didn’t recall what I had witnessed in Krasnodar: the open theft of soap from a factory, and flea-market merchants who were well stocked with goods that obviously had never found their way to store shelves. How do consumer goods bypass stores and get to flea markets without anyone’s noticing? Why do officials from the appropriate services persistently fail to see the “black holes” through which these goods disappear? It’s these unanswered questions that keep me from sympathizing with trade officials’ complaints about the failures of production and the habits of hoarding housewives.

Just before this article went to press, I made another trip to Krasnodar. Unfortunately, the situation had not changed: Virtually the same items were unavailable in the same stores. The “black hole” through which my companion and I had obtained soap from the oil and fat combine had been patched up, and a new one had appeared. And merchants at the flea market still had plenty of detergent, high-quality toilet soap and other scarce goods for sale at three to five times the official price.
