Platinum Jubilee: Remembering the Queen's various visits to High Wycombe

High Wycombe - Ten interesting facts you might not know about the Buckinghamshire town

Including its role in the Cornetto trilogy, some of its famous faces and a bizarre ritual involving the mayor

  • 06:00, 8 MAY 2021

HIgh Wycombe has so many interesting facts

High Wycombe has some fascinating history making it a place that is overflowing with interesting facts.

The town was once represented in Parliament by one of Queen Victoria’s most-liked Prime Ministers and High Wycombe showcased its most famous industry when she visited.

However, more recently, it has been the home of celebrities, large companies and has even starred in major films and TV shows.

Read on for our ten interesting facts about the town.

The town was represented by one of Queen Victoria’s favourite Prime Ministers

Benjamin Disraeli, who was Prime Minister briefly in 1868 and then between 1874 and 1880, represented Wycombe for the Conservatives.

However, before this he stood a number of times unsuccessfully for the Radicals - a movement keen to see parliamentary reform and lower taxes.

During his leadership of the country, he was close friends with Queen Victoria and she made the Prime Minister the Earl of Beaconsfield in 1876.

The monarch was saddened when he was no longer Prime Minister after the Conservatives were beaten decisively by the Liberals in the 1880 election.

The town weighs its mayor to see whether they have been getting rich on the public pound

UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1932: The mayor of High Wycombe is weighed for his inauguration - according to the regional tradition , Photograph, November the 9th, 1932 (Photo by Imagno/Getty Images) [Der B?rgermeister von High Wycombe wird entsprechend der regionalen Tradition zur Amtseinf?hrung gewogen, Photographie, 9, 11, 1932]

The town has a tradition that dates back to Medieval times of weighing its mayor to make sure that they aren’t gaining weight on the taxpayer's money.

Now it’s just a bit of fun and the town’s councillors and the MP Steve Baker all get involved too.

The mayor is weighed at the start and the end of their term and the town crier will shout "And no more" if no weight has been gained but will bellow "And some more" if a few pounds have been gained.

Hundreds of years ago if a mayor had gained weight he could be expected to be pelted with tomatoes and rotten fruit.

High Wycombe’s train station played a role in the Cornetto Trilogy

The final film in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s hilarious Cornetto Trilogy, given that name because each film features Cornetto ice-creams, has scenes filmed in High Wycombe.

The World’s End sees five friends meet up for a pub crawl that they last did twenty years ago only to find themselves being the last hope to save the planet as we know it.

When the friends first meet and Simon Pegg's character picks them up they are at High Wycombe station.

The Mighty Boosh stars met in High Wycombe

The Mighty Boosh is a British comedy group that includes Julian Barratt, Dave Brown and Noel Fielding.

The TV series, of the same name, is a surreal comic fantasy that features extensive musical performances in various styles including electro, heavy metal, funk, and rap.

While attending Bucks New University in Wycombe Fielding met Brown and then Barratt joined after Fielding saw him perform at the Wycombe Swan theatre.

The town celebrated a visit by Queen Victoria with chairs

High Wycombe’s most famous industry is its chair manufacturing which really took off in the 19th century - it is thought that around 4,700 chairs were made every day in High Wycombe in 1875.

During a visit by Queen Victoria to the town in 1877 the council organised for chairs to be crafted into an arch over the High Street with “Long live the Queen” printed boldly on them.

The idea was for the monarch to pass under this during her trip.

The town has spawned a number of high-profile celebrities

queen visits wycombe high school

High Wycombe has been home to a number of high-profile celebrities over the years.

US TV host and actor James Corden grew up on the outskirts of High Wycombe in Hazlemere while Leigh-Anne Pinnock, who is a member of the girl band Little Mix is from the town.

Actress Sally Phillips, who has starred in Bridget Jones and I’m Alan Partidge, attended Wycombe Abbey Girls School while actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who played the lead in Kick Ass, was born in High Wycombe.

A former girls school became a US army base in WWII

During the Second World War, from May 1942 Wycombe Abbey, a former girls school in High Wycombe, was the Headquarters of Eighth Air Force Bomber Command.

The site was codenamed ‘Pinetree’ and there was a large underground bunker and a hutted encampment to the south and east of Daws Hill, which is near the Abbey.

The Abbey was returned to the school in 1946, however, the other land was sold to the Ministry of Defence and the US continued to use the site during the Cold War.

The town’s first public library was not a popular decision with the wealthy

High Wycombe’s first public library was opened in 1875 after the philanthropist James Olliff Griffits acquired the old school in Church Street and created a library - he even paid for most of it himself.

However, it was not popular with the wealthy men of the town as they wanted working class men to be drinking beer in their pubs rather than educating themselves.

Global bakery Hovis is based in the town

queen visits wycombe high school

While Hovis did not start its life in High Wycombe, it was actually founded in Staffordshire, its head office is now in the town.

The company was founded over 130 years ago and sells some of Britain’s most well-known products to families in Bucks and across the country.

It has even had famous faces behind its adverts - its ‘Boy on the Bike’ advert which was incredibly popular at the time was directed by Ridley Scott who also made the film Alien.

The town is twinned with Kelkheim in Germany

High Wycombe has been paired with German town Kelkheim for over 35 years after signing a twinning agreement in 1985.

The document said that the purpose of the twinning was “to maintain permanent bonds between our two municipalities, to promote exchanges of all kinds between their inhabitants with the aim of fostering through greater mutual understanding the true spirit of European brotherhood.”

You can join up as a member if you’re from the High Wycombe area and participate in trips to the German town.

History & Heritage

queen visits wycombe high school

With centuries of rich history behind the town, High Wycombe has cultivated a vibrant cultural past, filled with thriving industry, political grandeur and mayoral pageantry. The town’s existence can be dated as far back as the Iron Age, with evidence of Hill Forts in Desborough & Keep Hill, and later, the existence of a luxury Roman era villa.

The town’s name comes from its historical layout, a gathering of ‘Wics’ or ‘dwellings’, referring to the series of hamlets dotted along the town’s River Wye.

High Wycombe’s charter market has been in place for over 700 years – one of the oldest in the UK – and supported the town’s growth during the Medieval and Tudor eras when the town became known for its lace and linen cloth production. Tradesmen would make their way from London to Oxford, stopping along the way at various High Wycombe’s taverns, such as the Wheatsheaf Inn, which can still be seen on the High Street today.

With the first recorded inauguration in 1285, High Wycombe’s elected ‘Town Mayor’ has become an important figure in the town’s heritage. The annual ‘Mayor Weighing’ – a custom dating back to the 1600s – was originally introduced to assess whether the elected officials were getting ‘fat’ off the public’s taxes. Whilst the event is now purely ceremonial, High Wycombe is the UK’s only town to continue this tradition.

During the 17 th and 18 th Centuries, High Wycombe was noted for its mill-driven paper industry. The River Wye’s water, rich in chalk, was ideal for bleaching pulp. This was soon overtaken by the town’s famous furniture making industry (particularly Windsor chairs). By the late 1800s, around 150 furniture workshops and factories had been set up, taking advantage of High Wycombe’s thriving natural beech woods. By 1875 the town was producing around 4,700 chairs a day.

High Wycombe bodger

In 1877, High Wycombe became the first town to build a ‘Chair Arch’. Emblazoned with the words ‘Long Live the Queen’, the impressive display was created to celebrate a visit from Queen Victoria, a close friend of the then Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli, who resided at the town’s nearby country estate, Hughenden Manor.

From the 1870s to the First World War, furniture making was High Wycombe’s staple industry, and the town’s growth and prosperity can be directly attributed to the Windsor Chair. It is an icon of craftsmanship that remains much celebrated throughout the town to this day.

The house on King Road: A look at the Moscow home where four U of I students were killed

Idaho Statesman logo

Sally Krutzig and Kevin Fixler, Idaho Statesman

Back of Moscow house

( Idaho Statesman ) — At 1122 King Road in Moscow sits a gray six-bedroom, three-bathroom house that continues to be the source of significant national attention.

Known as a student rental, the home’s most recent tenants were a group of six University of Idaho undergraduates who signed a 12-month lease that began on June 5, according to the property management firm that oversees the home.

Three of the student renters would not live to see the end of their lease.

The tenants were Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen, as well as an unnamed sixth person on the lease.

RELATED | Who were the four students killed at the University of Idaho? A look into their lives

In the early morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 13, Mogen, Goncalves, Kernodle and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, were stabbed to death in the house. Police found two bodies on the second floor and two bodies on the third floor, but have not released which victims were discovered where.

Mortensen and Funke were on the first floor of the home and went unharmed. Police have said they were not involved in the killings.

Nearly six weeks have passed, and law enforcement still has not named a suspect in the quadruple homicide.

The Idaho Statesman used photos from rental listings and documents submitted by former owners to the city of Moscow to explore the layout of the King Road house. Depictions of the floors are approximations created by the Statesman based on that information.

Just north of the home is the university’s new Greek Row , where many fraternity and sorority activities take place. That proximity meant the area was particularly popular among those involved in U of I Greek life.

About 1,600 students are members of the school’s fraternities and sororities. That total represents 23% of the roughly 7,000 undergraduate students enrolled in fall 2022 at the Moscow campus, according to university spokespeople.

Goncalves was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority, while Mogen and Kernodle were members of Pi Beta Phi. Funke is a member of Pi Phi as well, and identified Mogen as her “big sister” in a letter she wrote that was read at a Dec. 2 memorial . Mortensen also appears in multiple photos reviewed by the Statesman, including with Funke, on the sorority’s Facebook page, wearing clothing with Pi Phi insignia.

Many renters in the area around King Road were overflow from the nearby fraternities and sororities, said Merida McClanahan, supervisor at Team Idaho Real Estate & Property Management.

“ we have a lot of university students as our tenants and we’ve got quite a few of the properties down there on King Road,” McClanahan told the Statesman in a phone interview. “It’s a tight-knit community. They’re on the back side of campus right across the street from Greek Row, and those kids cycle in and out.”

The listed owner of the King Road property didn’t return email and phone messages from the Statesman.

1205 07 Moscow House statesman

David Janssen, 32, a former U of I graduate student who said he’s a five-year tenant of an apartment complex adjacent to the rental home, confirmed that fraternity and sorority members appear to dominate the tightly packed neighborhood.

The surrounding Greek life environment contributed to what those familiar with the neighborhood, including Janssen, described in interviews with the Statesman as a loud party culture in the conjoined dead-end streets of King and Queen roads.

“This has always been a party place since I’ve lived here — always,” said Sean Hundley, 34, a nearly lifelong Moscow resident, and maintenance person for the adjacent apartment complex.

The tenants of the King Road house had received three noise complaints for loud music since August, according to a Statesman review of Moscow police reports. Two came on the same night in early September from separate neighbors in two single-family homes, each about a quarter-mile away, on the street located above the valley where the King Road house sits.

Goncalves received a warning from police for the first noise complaint in August. Mogen and Kernodle each received law enforcement warnings from the two complaints in September, according to the police reports.

In recently released Moscow police body-cam footage posted on YouTube , officers were shown trying to track down a resident of the home after the first of the September noise complaints.

“I guarantee you they’re associated with a sorority,” Moscow Police Sgt. Dustin Blaker said in the footage, to a male student who didn’t live at the home. “As many of them are living here, it’s an off-campus sorority house.”

Three floors of Moscow house

The King Road home’s six bedrooms had at one time been rented as separate apartments, according to McClanahan, with the property management firm.

“Primarily for the last 12 years, it has been rented as one unit as a single-family home,” McClanahan said.

The house originally had two floors, but an owner requested to add the lowest floor in 2000, according to Moscow city permits. Built into a hillside, the house has one exterior door on each floor.

The home is 3,120 square feet, according to Zillow . The Latah County Assessor’s Office assessed its value at $343,848 in August.

The first floor

first floor moscow house

All of the tenants except the sixth unnamed person on the lease, who police said had moved out before the start of the school year, were home at the time of the Nov. 13 attack. The five housemates, along with Chapin, were all back at the King Road house by 1:56 a.m., police said. Call records made by Mogen and Goncalves indicated the attack happened sometime after they placed a phone call at 2:52 a.m., according to The New York Times.

The roommates on the first floor, Mortensen and Funke, likely were asleep until later that morning, according to police.

Attempts by the Statesman to reach Funke and Mortensen have been unsuccessful.

At 11:58 a.m., a 911 call was made from inside the house on one of the surviving roommates’ cellphones, according to police. The roommates summoned friends to the house because they believed one of the victims on the second floor had passed out and was not waking up. Multiple people spoke with the 911 dispatcher before officers arrived, police said.

Authorities have declined to release the 911 recording, citing an ongoing investigation.

On social media, many have expressed disbelief that Mortensen and Funke would not have woken up during the killings. However, former first-floor tenant Ryan Augusta told Fox News that he typically “heard nothing” from the second and third floors when he lived there in 2019. Reached by the Statesman, Augusta said he stood by his prior statement.

City records and photos from online rental listings indicate the first floor has two bedrooms that open into a shared hallway. The hallway also leads to a bathroom and a stairway that goes to the second floor.

A door between the bedrooms opens to the property’s driveway.

The second floor

second floor moscow house

The second floor of the home includes a living room, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. This floor can be accessed from the outside through a sliding glass door between the porch and the kitchen.

This floor has two separate staircases, one that leads to the first floor and one to the third floor.

Kernodle lived on the second floor, her mother, Cara Northington, said in an interview this month with NewsNation . Chapin’s mother, Stacy Chapin, previously confirmed to the Statesman that her son spent the night at his girlfriend’s house.

The third floor

third floor moscow house

The third floor of the home includes a bathroom and two bedrooms — one of which has a balcony with a sliding glass door. This floor can be accessed only by the staircase from the second floor.

Goncalves’ father, Steve Goncalves, said his daughter and Mogen lived on the third floor, according to Fox News. He said he believes that the two women, close friends since childhood, both slept in Mogen’s room the night of the killings.

Two items — a pair of pink boots frequently worn by Mogen in social media photos and a decorative letter M— could be seen in the window of bedroom E following the homicides. Goncalves posted social media videos from bedroom F.

Goncalves had a dog named Murphy who was home at the time of the attack, police said. Officers found the dog in a room where the crimes were not committed, but do not know where he was at the time of the killings, according to a news release. Police found no evidence on the dog, they said.

After a drag queen show during prom, an Albuquerque high school principal is removed

The principal of a high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been replaced and multiple employees have been put on administrative leave as the district investigates a drag queen show that took place during prom.

Earlier this week, the chief of Albuquerque Public Schools, Channell Segura, sent a letter to parents confirming the performance occurred during April 20's prom and said an investigation would determine how it happened and how it may have affected students.

Segura was unavailable for comment Friday. She did not say in the letter whether the replacement of Atrisco Heritage Academy High School's principal was related to the drag performance.

In a video on TikTok, students can be seen gathering around the performer in thigh-high black boots and a matching body suit, as the performer is bending over, squatting and dancing provocatively.

Atrisco Heritage Academy High School.

NBC News affiliate KOB 4 in Albuquerque identified the performer as drag queen Mythica Sahreen.

Sahreen told the station that he previously worked with the Gay-Straight Alliance and was invited to perform at the prom. He did not say who invited him.

On the school’s official Facebook page , several people expressed disappointment and frustration over the performance.

“Every staff member who knew anything about that disgusting spectacle at prom should be fired," wrote a poster named Kristin Arnold Waide. "Immediately.”

Another poster, identified as Paul Miller, wrote, "How wicked and morally corrupt must people be to allow this? Whoever approved this should not be allowed anywhere near children.”

A poster named Robb Vann said the performance resembled grooming and predatory behavior.

“What do y’all teach the students there? Did not one person on staff stand up and say anything?" Vann wrote.

It was unclear whether the posters were parents of students at the school.

School district spokesperson Martin Salazar declined to say Friday whether the performance was approved by school officials or how many staff members were placed on leave.

“At this point, I do not have any other information to share,” he said.

The district this week named Anthony Lovato acting principal, he said. Former principal Irene Cisneros could not be reached for comment.
