Biografie - Leony

Leony fan-report: bewertungen und rezensionen, 128 bewertungen (ø 4,8), toll und "hautnah".

Kleinere Location, gute Sicht. Tolle Stimmung. Leony stand mitten im Publikum.

Internationaler Sound, tolle Stimme, ganz viel Herz

One Day in Dresden: The Perfect Dresden Itinerary

' data-src=

Sharing is caring!

One day in Dresden

Dresden is one of those cities that’s a little more of a hidden gem. Known for its classic architecture, beautiful buildings, and epic Christmas markets, It’s definitely worth spending at least one day in Dresden if you’re exploring Saxony.

The beautiful city of Dresden

We actually drove up from the little village of Hrensko in Czechia. We explored many beautiful sites in Saxon Switzerland National Park including Bastei Bridge and Pravcicka Brana and decided to take a day to explore the city.

Drsden city centre

Some of the architecture here is amazing, and there are some wonderful palaces here and I was almost reminded of Vienna ! It’s well worth a visit if you love exploring culturally rich destinations.

✅ Don’t have time to read the whole article? Here’s the best tour in Dresden , and one of the best hotels in the city !

Where to Stay in Dresden

Dresden has a great selection of accommodation options from beautiful guest houses to comfortable hotels and apartments. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Dresden, here are my top 3 recommendations:

  • £££ – Hotel Suites – A wonderful 5* hotel, this suite is excellent if you fancy a luxurious stay in the city. With beautiful views from the spacious rooms, a spa, a fitness suite, and a restaurant serving delicious food, you’ll be completely spoiled.
  • ££ – Hotel Indigo Dresden Wettiner Platz – This gorgeous hotel is located in the centre of the city. You’ll find comfortable, modern rooms, a very nice lobby area, and a delicious breakfast.
  • £ – prizeotel Dresden-Mitte – A great budget option, this hotel is simple yet comfortable. The rooms are reasonably large but the beds are very comfortable. There is also a par and onsite parking, perfect if you’re driving in Germany like we were.

How to Spend One Day in Dresden

So, if you’re planning on spending some time in Saxony, here is the perfect itinerary for spending one day in Dresden.

9:00 – Go For A Walk Along Bruhls Terrace

Cost : Free

Start your day in Dresden at Bruhl’s Terrace. Also called the ‘Balcony of Europe’, this is a beautiful spot in the city and walking along the banks of the Elbe River is a great way to begin your exploration of the city.

The views across Bruhl's Terrace

Brühl’s Terrace was once the defensive ramparts of the city. These days, it’s mainly a stunning promenade offering panoramic views of the Elbe River.

Lined with historic statues and overlooked by awe-inspiring buildings such as the Academy of Fine Arts, it’s a great place to relax, go for a short walk, or sit and eat lunch on one of the many benches overlooking the river.

✅ Book a river sightseeing cruise of Dresden

10:30 – Explore the Dresden Cathedral

Continue along Bruhl’s Terrace and along the riverfront and eventually, you’ll reach Schlossplatz, a historic plaza lined with the most beautiful buildings. This is also where you’ll find the impressive cathedral.

Dresden's Impressive cathedral

Dresden Cathedral is a wonderful example of the city’s Rococo and Baroque architecture. It’s also the final resting place of many Saxon rulers and you can find intriguing tombs and headstones inside. You’ll also find beautiful altars, stained glass windows, and a huge Silbermann organ.

11:30 – Visit the Semperoper

Cost : Free to view. Ticket prices vary.

Next, head literally a 2-minute walk around the corner to the impressive Semperoper. Located in a large plaza, the Semper Opera House is one of the city’s most iconic buildings. Built in the 19th century by Gottfried Semper, it has an intricate Italian High Renaissance design and is one of Europe’s most beautiful theatres.

You should definitely visit the Semperoper during one day in Dresden

Inside is just as beautiful as the outside with intricately carved sculptures, elaborate red and gold furnishings, and a dramatic chandelier that dominates the auditorium. You can watch world-class performances, including operas, theatre, and ballets here in the evenings, and it’s also well worth going on a guided tour to admire the beauty inside.

✅ Book a guided tour of the Semperoper

12:30 – Visit the Zwinger Palace

Cost : Free to view.

Almost right next to the Semperoper, you’ll find the Zwinger Palace. This is one of the must-see places during one day in Dresden and is one of the top attractions in the city.

The magnificent Zwinger Palace is a top thing to do during one day in Dresden

The Zwinger Palace is a stunning palace complex that perfectly highlights Dresden’s unique architectural styles. Like the cathedral, it was built in the Rococo style and is notoriously grand.

The beautiful Zwinger Palace

Originally the setting for a range of festivities, the Zwinger now houses a multitude of museums, including the renowned Old Masters Picture Gallery , which contains Raphael’s famous “Sistine Madonna.”

The fountain at the Zwinger Palace

Its meticulously maintained gardens are famous in the city and are utterly beautiful. Decorated with fountains and statues, they offer a peaceful place to relax within the city.

Views from the Zwinger Palace

Unfortunately, when we visited, they were under restoration which was pretty disappointing. However, they usually look stunning. It was also still well worth exploring the grounds as the architecture is utterly gorgeous.

✅ Book tickets to a Gala Concert in the Zwinger Palace

13:30 – Head Back to Dresden Market Square for Lunch

Cost : Depends what you have for lunch!

After you’ve wandered around the magnificent Zwinger Palace, head over to the Market Square for a spot of lunch. Nestled in Dresden’s old town under the imposing Frauenkirche, this square is where the famous Christmas markets are held every December.

Some of the cool market stalls

Although it was far from Christmas when we visited (we were here in May ), the market stalls were still in full swing, selling a range of delicious foods, arts and crafts, and decorations. We grabbed ourselves a bratwurst and a crepe for lunch which were both delicious.

However, if market food isn’t your thing, you can always head to one of the nearby restaurants for a spot of lunch. Here are a few great spots:

  • Alte Meister for a mix of Saxon and Mediterranean cuisine near Zwinger Palace.
  • Coselpalais Grand Café & Restaurant offers an elegant setting with classic regional fare.

14:30 – Climb the Frauenkirche Dresden

Cost : Free to enter. €7.50 per adult to climb the tower.

There’s a reason I suggested heading back to this square for lunch. Because the next thing on this itinerary is to visit the wonderful Frauenkirche.

Also known as the ‘Church of Our Lady’, this was reconstructed in 2005 and is an iconic symbol of the city’s rebirth after WWII. it’s also just a very impressive building.

Dresden's iconic Frauenkirche

Inside, you’ll find more beauty with pastel frescoes and gold accents. There is also a large organ which, when played, echoes through the entire building.

While there, I highly recommend you climb to the top of the dome for a panoramic view of the city. It’s a great place to admire the cityscape and a must-do during one day in Dresden.

15:30 – Admire the Furstenzug

Despite all of the grand architecture and beautiful buildings, this was actually one of my favourite things to see in Dresden. It’s so effortlessly elegant and a really beautiful piece of work in the city.

The beautiful Furstenzug mural

Located just off the market square where you’ll find the beautiful Frauenkirche, this is a stunningly beautiful mural. Stretching over 101 meters along the outside wall of the former Royal Palace and Castle, it is the largest porcelain mural in the world.

Me against the Furstenzug, one of my favourite things to see during one day in Dresden

Created with about 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, the large mural portrays many dukes, electors, and kings on horseback, along with scientists, artisans, and farmers, showcasing the cultural and historical wealth of the German city.

It’s a really cool spot that shows the long history of Dresden in a beautiful piece of art.

✅ Book a guided walking tour of Dresden

16:00 – Explore Dresden’s Royal Palace (Residenzschloss)

Cost : €14 per adult to enter the museum.

Also known as the Residenzschloss, Dresden’s Royal Palace is another essential spot to visit, even if you only have one day in Dresden.

It’s the former residence of the electors and kings of Saxony. As such, it’s another pretty impressive building in the city and it’s steeped in royal history.

The inside of Dresden's Residenzschloss

Its Renaissance architecture is amazing and inside, you’ll find plenty of treasures. This includes the magnificent Green Vault , containing an exquisite collection of treasures from ornate swords to jewelerry, to one of the most impressive diamonds in the world.

You can also visit the Turkish Chamber, full of lavish Ottoman art and armour.

The Palace in Dresden

You can literally spend hours exploring this place, wandering around reconstructions, original artefacts, and the palace’s numerous exhibitions. It’s a great palace to explore the story of Saxony’s past and a must-visit for those with an interest in historical places.

Impressive jewels in the Residenzschloss

When you visit, there are several ticket options that you can choose from. You can visit just the historic Green Vault, or just the Palace itself or even buy a guided tour if you like. So, the amount of time you can spend here really depends on your interests.

18:00 – Dinner

Cost : Depends what you eat!

After spending a good few hours exploring the Royal Palace of Dresden, you’ll have almost definitely worked up an appetite. Luckily, this is a great city for food lovers and there are a lot of options on where to find dinner. Here are a few top choices:

  • Sophienkeller : Nestled in the historic Taschenbergpalais, this restaurant offers an authentic Saxon dining experience complete with costumed servers and local specialities like Sauerbraten and Radeberger beer.
  • Pulverturm an der Frauenkirche : Savor the flavours of classic German cuisine in an atmospheric setting that transports you back to medieval times, ideal for a memorable meal after a day in Dresden.
  • Schillergarten : Located by the beautiful Elbe River, Schillergarten provides a scenic view along with its menu of regional dishes, perfect for dining al fresco during the warmer months.
  • L’Osteria Dresden: A delicious pizzeria, ideal if you want a simple and affordable meal. This was where we ate and the pizzas were both huge and delicious. Plus, you could half them and have two different topping combinations.

And, after a delicious meal, you’ve come to the end of your 1 day in Dresden!

✅ Book an evening river cruise in Dresden with dinner

Is One Day Enough in Dresden?

Personally, I thought one day was enough to see enough of Dresden’s major highlights. Nonetheless, there were certainly a few museums that we missed and we might’ve spent more time at the Zwinger Palace had there not been restorations.

So, while we saw everything we wanted within a day trip, you may want to stay in the city for two days if you want to dig a little deeper and visit places like the Transport Museum (pictured below).

The Transport Museum is one of the best things to see if you have more than one day in Dresden.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Dresden?

Personally, I think the best times to visit Dresden are in the spring , autumn or winter . You can definitely expect the best weather in the summer months, but the bustling city is much busier then.

Impressive architecture in Dresden

We visited in early May and, while a little rainy, it wasn’t too crowded and was a great time to explore this gorgeous part of East Germany. This is also a popular spot to visit in the winter months, thanks to the elaborate Christmas market that takes place in the city.

Is Dresden worth visiting?

Yes, Dresden is worth visiting. It’s a great way to explore much of the beautiful architecture culture, and beauty of Saxony. Plus, if you like royal history, the city is an absolute must-visit in Germany.

Final Thoughts on Spending One Day in Dresden

Overall, we had a fantastic day in Dresden. The beautiful European city is the perfect place to explore some of the architectural gems of Germany, all while diving into the delightful culture of the region too.

In terms of architecture, it’s on par with the sights in cities like Frankfurt , Baden-Baden , Heidelberg, and Cologne , so for those interested in rich history and architecture, you’ll love it here. Plus, if you visit in the winter months, you’ll also be treated to some of the best Christmas markets in Germany!

Perfect 2 Days In Dresden Itinerary

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Feb 25, 2023 | Europe , Germany , Travel Tips

If you’re wondering how to spend 2 days in Dresden keep reading for the perfect itinerary!

Located on either side of the Elbe River, the city of Dresden is both unique and fascinating.

Once the seat of Saxon rulers, it boasts some spectacular architecture and museums filled with art, antiques, and royal clothing. Yet everything is not as it seems at first sight.

This is a city that has risen from the ashes, with much of its original architecture destroyed by bombing in World War 2.

A period of Communist rule followed, reflected in some of Dresden’s austere, Soviet-style buildings. During this time, nothing was done to restore the original city to its former glory.

But that changed with the German reunification in 1990 when reconstruction of the medieval Old Town began.

And the results are quite spectacular, with Dresden’s historic heart now offering its visitors everything from palaces and gardens to perfectly restored churches.

2 days in Dresden is just the right amount of time to see the best that this intriguing city has to offer.

It is easy to walk between the different attractions, especially if you follow this itinerary and spent one day in the Old Town, and the other in the New.

The bus and tram services are efficient should you choose not to walk and there are ferries crossing the Elbe to help you see things from a different perspective.

Read on to discover the best way to spend a weekend in Dresden, with our recommendations for what to do each morning and afternoon of your stay.

We’ll also share some of our favorite places to eat and the best accommodation options available in Dresden to suit every budget.

Dresden

The first of your two days in Dresden will be spent entirely in the Old Town on the south side of the river.

When you view some of the intricate detail on the restored buildings here, you’ll find it hard to believe that they are younger than the New Town buildings!

To start your day, head to Neumarkt, Dresden’s beautiful main square. Here you’ll find one of the city’s main attractions, the Frauenkirche, often considered one of Germany’s most outstanding reconstruction projects.

The original building was completed in 1793, and its ruins were then stored after its WWII destruction. The building you see now finally opened in 2005, containing almost 4,000 of its original stones.

It is breathtakingly beautiful inside, with gorgeous galleries and a Baroque altar. Entry is free, or you can pay to go up inside the dome for a fantastic view of the city.

Next, visit Brühl’s Terrace. Once a city wall, it extends along the Elbe for around 1,640 feet (500 meters) and is a great place to take a stroll.

You will find the Albertinum here, an art museum containing works by masters such as Goya, Degas, and Max Liebermann.

From here take the 10-minute walk to the spectacular Semperoper, home to the Dresden Orchestra, Saxon State Opera, and Semperoper Ballet.

You can book a guided tour of the beautifully decorated interior – or even buy tickets to attend a performance!

Your next stop is the nearby Zwinger building, a museum housing the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments and the Porcelain Collection.

Take the time to walk around the outside and admire the fabulous Baroque architecture, considered among the finest in Germany.

Before lunch, go to see the Fürstenzug, or ‘Procession of Princes’, this is a 335 feet (102-meter-long) mural depicting the Dukes, Electors, and Kings of the house of Wettin, along with other important cultural figures.

Composed of 25,000 Meissen Porcelain tiles, it thankfully survived the bombing in 1945.

After stopping for lunch at the popular Ladencafé aha, it’s time to head towards the Grosser Garten, a 20-minute walk away.

Open to the public since 1814, this beautiful garden was originally designed in the French Baroque style.

It is home to the Sommerpalais – one of Germany’s earliest Baroque palaces – along with the Dresden Zoo and Botanical Garden.

Stroll just outside the Garden to find the German Hygiene Museum. Founded in 1912, it is far more fascinating than it sounds and contains exhibits related to health and medicine.

Here you can see the popular Glass Woman and a children’s museum devoted to the senses, containing lots of interactive activities.

To end your afternoon, stroll towards Altstadt for a visit to the Residenzschloss, another of the city’s main attractions. This former Royal Palace is one of the oldest public museums in Europe and contains some fabulous exhibitions.

You can see everything from a medieval armory here to a  fascinating Turkish Chamber, where an authentic tent is erected.

The museum also houses the  Historical Green Vault and the New Green Vault, both filled with collections of jewelry, and the Dresden State Art Collection.

Here you can see treasures, including beautiful needlework, wonderful masterpieces, and original court clothing.

As the day draws to a close, why not enjoy a Sunset Paddle Steamer Cruise on the Elbe River ?

This 3.5-hour experience helps you enjoy Dresden from an entirely new perspective, passing by 4 bridges and taking in the city’s stately castles.

Although not included as part of the tour, food and drink are available to purchase on board, so you can relax, dine, and watch the world go by.

The second of your two days in Dresden will be spent in the city’s New Town and then the nearby town of Meissen, with its fabulous Porcelain Museum and Castle.

After a morning cappuccino and a taste of local life at the Neustadter Markthalle, your first stop today is Garnison Kirche Saint Martin.

This beautiful church is definitely worth a quick look, with its pretty stained glass windows and interesting architectural features.

From here, take a short walk to the Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr – Dresden’s Military Museum.

Imposing on the outside and modern on the inside, this impressive building offers 4 floors of exhibits, with an unrivaled view of the city from the 5th floor.

You won’t need to be a lover of military history to find this vast museum captivating, as there is also a very strong – and sobering – emphasis on the human side of war.

You may choose to spend your entire morning here (there’s certainly enough to see!), or you could head instead to the Albrechtsberg Castle a 10-minute drive away.

You can’t go into the Castle unless you are part of a group, but you are allowed to stroll through the park. This provides lovely elevated views of the Elbe.

Seeing the best of Dresden in 2 days gives you time to pay a visit to the town of Meissen, just 16.8 mi (30 km) to the west.

It can be reached via the S-Bahn from Neustadt station in around 1.25 hours. Get off at the Meissen-Triebischtal stop so you can visit the town’s main attraction – its world-famous Porcelain Museum.

Meissen is Europe’s oldest and largest porcelain manufacturer, and the museum is totally fascinating! With vast windows providing plenty of light, its collection is a pleasure to behold and contains many exquisite pieces.

There are interesting workshops to enjoy, where you can see educational videos and watch craftsmen demonstrate parts of the production process. An audio tour is available in English if required.

After visiting the museum, take a walk along to Meissen Altstadt, where you’ll discover cobblestone streets, an old market square, and Albrechtsburg Castle.

If you have the time, it’s well worth buying tickets to enter, as the Castle is now a museum containing exhibits about its history and that of the town.

Meissen

A fitting end to your 2 days in Dresden is to experience typical Saxon food as it would have been prepared in the 18th century.

The best place to do this is at Sophienkeller im Taschenbergpalais, one of the city’s most beautiful vault restaurants.

Here you can enjoy traditional delicacies such as spit-roasted suckling pig, duck, and Saxon potato soup.

As you dine you can listen to music played on a lute and hear historic stories from staff dressed in period costumes.

Are 2 Days In Dresden Enough?

As you can see, it is very easy to see the best of Dresden in 2 days, mainly because all the main attractions are so close together.

Do remember, though, that this itinerary is based on two full days in the city. If you arrive in Dresden late on your first day or need to leave early on departure day, then we would recommend adding an extra night to your stay.

How Many Days In Dresden?

While we recommend a minimum of two days, it might depend on your arrival and departure time too.

We suggest you make a list of all the things you want to do in Dresden, look at your time of arrival and departure to decide how realistic it is.

Then, you should be able to know exactly how many days you’ll need in Dresden.

If you’d rather visit Dresden at a slower pace, we recommend staying 3-4 days.

Where To Stay In Dresden

Thanks to Dresden’s relatively compact size and good transport links, you have quite a bit of freedom over where in the city you choose to stay.

Most first-time visitors choose to stay in the Old Town, although accommodation costs here can be a bit higher than in the newer part of the city.

Here are some of our favorite places to stay.

Best Budget Accommodation

Hostel Lollis Homestay is located in the Neustadt district, surrounded by plenty of lively cafes and pubs. The rooms are brightly furnished and individually decorated, with free wifi available throughout.

There is a fully equipped communal kitchen with free tea and coffee, laundry facilities, plus linen to rent.

Available rooms include singles, doubles, dormitory rooms, and apartments. There are several free events on offer including a BBQ night, and Neustadt Train Station is just a 15-minute walk away.

Best Mid-Range Accommodation

In a super location just steps from Frauenkirche, INNSiDE by Meliá Dresden is within easy reach of all the other Old Town’s attractions.

The contemporary-style rooms are elegantly decorated, featuring air-conditioning, a rain shower, and toiletries.

There is an excellent wellness area with 2 saunas, a steam bath, and a fitness studio, plus the VEN restaurant serving German and international cuisine.

Cocktails are on offer at the TWIST bar, or you can head to the 6th-floor Sky Bar for fabulous views of the Frauenkirche Church.

Best Luxury Accommodation

Why not spoil yourself during your 2 days in Dresden with a stay at the beautiful Hotel Suitess in the center of the Old Town?

The hotel has an original Baroque façade and is located right beside the Frauenkirche Church. The soundproofed rooms are decorated in 19th-century style and feature flat-screen TVs and Italian marble bathrooms.

Breakfast is available in the hotel’s restaurant and there is a lovely conservatory for dining in the warmer months.
