Why Did So Many Riders Crash at the FWT Comp in Fieberbrunn?

Tricky, variable conditions challenged younger, less experienced athletes while tour veterans managed to podium..

The Freeride World Tour event in Fieberbrunn, Austria, just wrapped up, and surprisingly few skiers performed without bobbling or crashing. Roughly half the men’s field made mistakes, facing snow snakes, backslaps, and lost skis. While the women’s roster fared marginally better, several overall title contenders, like Addison Rafford and Molly Armanino, didn’t put down clean runs.

Will Tucker, who assisted organizers in the start gate at the Fieberbrunn event, pointed out that unpredictable snow conditions likely led to the lack of controlled skiing. “In some places, it was really, really good, and in other places, it was still very thin and therefore sharky or hard, choppy, and heavy,” said Tucker. During FWT events, you aren’t allowed to ski the venue before your run, meaning firm snow and hidden rocks can catch athletes off-guard.

FWT Fieberbrunn

Arianna Tricomi, the winner of the women’s category at the Fieberbrunn FWT stop, used inexperience to explain the many bobbles amongst younger riders. Two traits frequently appear together in the current FWT roster: lesser competition experience than freeride veterans and a penchant for sending huge tricks. When mixed with inconsistent snow, these attributes can lead to tactical errors and bails. Young rookies like Marcus Goguen, Max Hitzig, and Simon Perraudin encountered the snowpack’s limitations by crashing during risky freestyle maneuvers.

“Yesterday, I think it was the proof that you need experience for this sport,” said Tricomi, whose first FWT appearance was in 2016. “We got really stoked about the snow, but we also knew it was some new snow on top of bad conditions. So you’re not going to go full gas. It’s not going to work,” she continued, explaining the pre-comp mindset of riders with more FWT years under their belts.

Don’t Miss: See the Insane Trick That Just Won the Freeride World Tour in Kicking Horse

Tricomi’s assumption applies to the winner of the men’s category, Andrew Pollard. Pollard’s competed in freeride since high school and started his FWT tenure in 2019, meaning he has more comp experience than many of the other, younger male athletes. During his run, he prioritized smart skiing, taking fluid turns and creative line selection over enormous tricks.

Pollard’s approach accounted for a unique freeride characteristic that sets this form of competition apart from other, more manicured competitive skiing disciplines, like alpine racing. Success typically hinges on a rider’s ability to account for what the snowpack does and doesn’t permit. During the Fieberbrunn event, the mountains appeared more inclined to reward riders who dialed back the amplitude.

“ Yesterday was a crazy day,” wrote Pollard in an Instagram post after the competition. “Lots of crashes and bobbles. Been playing the consistency game for a long time, and it finally worked.”

FWT Fieberbrunn

Event organizers tried to begin the Fieberbrunn competition on Monday, March 13, but faced warm weather and low visibility, leading to a delay. Additionally, little snow has fallen in Austria this winter, exposing dangerous rock features on the competition venue. “The face was in really bad shape. Like I’ve never seen it such low tide,” said Tricomi.

A mid-week storm changed the seemingly dire circumstances, and the event went off on Thursday, March 16, without any apparent hitches. On the live stream, the conditions looked perfect, with athletes kicking up vast plumes of powder.

Yet, according to Tricomi, the blue sky and fresh snow were illusory. “[The new snowfall] was some kind of illusion because we had pictures of the face, the way it looked before, and it was pretty gnarly,” she said.

Below the fresh snow lurked two problems: refrozen hardpack from the warm weather earlier in the week and rocks. Due to the roughly 10 inches of powder, these hazards were hidden, masquerading as prime conditions.

Go Deeper: Why Mogul Skiers Keep Winning Freeride World Tour Competitions

Pre-competition weather and snowpack difficulties have impacted multiple FWT competitions this season. At the last event, in Kicking Horse, B.C., a persistent weak layer hid beneath recent snowfall on the venue, causing snowpack instability and avalanche risk.

Yet, that’s part of the deal with freeride competitions. Organizers typically can’t change pre-established FWT event weather windows (the weeklong, weather-dependent competition day period). Alongside this scheduling rigidity, freeriding occurs on natural mountain faces, meaning grooming machines and snow blowers aren’t viable when conditions don’t cooperate. Ultimately, a successful FWT stop is about working with what Mother Nature provides.

“I’m always for a completely open season, where everywhere you go can be at the right place and the right time,” said FWT organizer Tucker, “but that, unfortunately, isn’t the reality.”

[Freeride World Tour 2023] Fieberbrunn, Austria – Stop Four Recap

freeride world tour fieberbrunn 2023 stream

Cover Photo – Jeremy Bernard

After a 48 hour weather delay, the Austrian skies went blue and the fourth stop of the 2023 Freeride World Tour was a go on Thursday, March 16th! With a stupendous coat of fresh snow, the iconic Wildseeloder mountain could not have been more picturesque. With snow conditions varying around the face and both snowboarding groups having already dropped, there were challenging aspects to the day for our skiers. The remaining riders who made the cut following the previous FWT stop in Kicking Horse, BC were ready to rumble, and we were treated to one of the best performances of the season. The six women and eleven men who dropped in painted their way with a mix of big mountain charging and freestyle creativity; a perfect combination for all who tuned in. Below you’ll find results, highlights, photos and more from Fieberbrunn, Austria.

In the Ski Women’s field three of the six riders struggled to lay down their chosen line. Elisabeth Gerritzen (NS), Addison Rafford and Molly Armanino all encountered challenging conditions on their lines that happened to get the best of them. Molly had an incredible promising run as she charged her way across the entire course, but fell short just near the end as she couldn’t hold on to a large air in the final stretch. These three will undoubtably be hungry for more come time for the Xtreme Verbier. In third place was Megane Betend. The French phenom had an unbelievable recovery a third of the way through her line, as she rode out of what appeared to be an accidental 360 after getting hung up in an incredibly steep and rocky section of the course. While it was a maneuver that left everyone cheering for more, and the rest of her run was executed with style and strength, she was docked points in the Control category.

Justine Dufour-Lapointe took home second place, making her the current leader in the Ski Women’s field heading into the fifth and final stop. While Justine’s run was incredible, complete with multiple airs, shifty, and powerful turns, the day belonged to Arianna Tricomi . With six years on the tour and half as many FWT titles, Arianna is no stranger to performing under pressure. She needed to perform great to boost her odds going into the finale, and perform she did. The Italian Stallion took a creative line on the lookers left side of the course, as she hit multiple airs, dialed in a 360, and held pristine control through blazing speeds.

“I had a lot of fun with my run. In some parts, the snow was a bit crusty, and other sections were good, so I came out with a lot of speed at times. My goal was to do a 360, which I did, so I really enjoyed it. Being back on tour is magical for sure!” – Arianna Tricomi

In the Ski Men’s field , we saw three riders, (Marcus Goguen, Max Palm, Finn Bilous) all receive NS on account of tough crashes during their runs. The remaining eight riders struggled to clear over 80 points, with only the top four finishers doing so. Granted, the scoring is challenging in these final two stops, but these scores also point to challenging conditions throughout. When considering this, the top scorers performances are quite admirable. It was the French rookie Oscar Mandin who took third place, adding to his previous second place finish during this years first stop at Baquiera-Beret . Oscar’s line took him to the lookers right of the course, with several large airs and beautiful flat 3.

Second place belonged to the reigning FWT Ski Men’s champion Maxime Chabloz. Maxime has been relatively quiet on the tour when compared to his unbelievable performance last year, but the Swiss ripper has still had multiple podiums and is skiing lights out heading into the final stop, as he’s only 1500 behind the first place Valentin Rainer. He stomped one of the larger backflips we saw out there, and while he was nearly caught up on a landing and a few turns, his staple cork 7 and sturdy turns towards the end brought him the podium. The first place finisher was none other than Andrew Pollard. Alta’s prodigal son put on arguably his best performance of the year, as he demonstrated technical big mountain abilities with a mix of freeride prowess, (including a tasteful daffy). With two lofty 360s and several transfer airs, Andrew painted his was down the Wildseeloder in mesmerizing style.

“It was a long week waiting for the conditions to be right, but we proved that the weather window works and that sometimes delaying the start is the best thing to do. I was happy to put down my run, which is always harder on a long venue like this. I didn’t think I could win anymore with all the young kids on tour, so I am just grateful to be here in Austria and stoked to win.” – Andrew Pollard

FREERIDE-TALK

  • Freeride Talk

The FIS as a gamechanger for the sport of freeriding? That was the question to which an answer was sought at the second edition of the Freeride Talk at the start of the Freeride World Tour in Fieberbrunn. Stefan Steinacher welcomed an illustrious round of talkers at the official Riders Hotel TUI Blue with Valentin Rainer, Lukas Müllauer, Nadine Wallner and Roman Kuss.

Since this season, the Freeride World Tour is part of the international ski federation, which CEO and founder Nicolas Hale-Woods calls an absolute milestone for his sport in a video message during the Freeride Talk in Fieberbrunn: "We will get more attention or also be able to apply for subsidies for athletes," says Hale-Woods. Among the freeriders themselves, however, there was initially not only positive feedback on this development, as two-time freeride world champion Nadine Wallner also knows: "It takes a certain freedom and flexibility to be able to practice the sport. I do think that the FIS is an opportunity for the youth. But I know a different vibe and hope that it will be maintained by the riders." Which Tyrolean Valentin Rainer, currently the overall leader of the Freeride World Tour, has no doubt about: "So far, nothing has changed for the worse for us, we don't feel constrained. From the beginning, I was one of the few who said that this step is needed now if you want to become bigger. I hope for more training opportunities for us freeriders, for example in the Olympic centers."   Freeriding is still in its infancy as far as the federation structures in the Austrian Ski Federation are concerned, explains Roman Kuss, the division manager for federation development & sports coordination in the Austrian Ski Federation: "Of course there have been discussions. We have 15 sports and 392 athletes in the Ski Association, serving 75 Olympic decisions. At some point there has to be a stop. On the other hand, I believe that as a professional association it is necessary to always be on the lookout for new things. Society continues to develop, which is why we must not close our minds to innovations. Not even to a further development of skiing. We are in the fortunate position that the presidium also sees it that way. Now we look where the journey leads".    Stefan Häusl, who after his active career in the Freeride World Tour himself acts as a freeride instructor training manager and coaches his own team on the Arlberg, sees the takeover of the Tour by the FIS as basically positive. For the former Tour athlete, the merger with the FIS could also raise the sport of freeriding in Austria to a higher level in terms of promoting young talent: "If you look internationally, we are not yet at the forefront. Switzerland, Canada, the USA and a few others are far ahead of us. As a skiing nation, we need to catch up and get the appropriate support to get more teams to the top."    The question of whether freeriding could also become an Olympic discipline in the near future is not yet on the mind of Valentin Rainer, who currently leads the FWT: "At 24, I'm already one of the oldest on the tour. In 2030 I would already be 31 years old. There are a lot of strong riders coming up. So it's rather unlikely that I'll still be there."   It is more likely that the Tyrolean will take another step towards overall victory in Fieberbrunn. Austria's only World Cup stop for freeriders, however, is currently "On Hold" due to the weather. A contest window has been set up for the elite riders until March 17. Promising looks at the moment the coming Monday. Tomorrow, Saturday, the Freeride Juniors get their big appearance.

Pro Skier Megane Betend Makes Showstopping Freeride World Tour Recovery

T he Freeride World Tour is one the most exciting competitions in skiing. It pits top-tier freeskiers head-to-head in a thrilling battle as they attempt to successfully ski the world's most challenging runs. Predictably gnarly close calls ensue.

In this video, filmed earlier this season during the Fieberbrunn, Austria, stop of the Freeride World Tour, French athlete Megane Betend makes a show-stopping recovery after getting turned around in a no-fall zone.

View the original article to see embedded media.

Such a fantastic save!

I've seen this countless times, and Megane's recovery is so effortless that her slip-up almost looks intentional. All I know is if I accidentally ended up backward in a chute, I'd probably be headed to the hospital, not the Freeride World Tour podium. Megane nabbed third place at Fieberbrunn after her recovery.

And that, my friends, is why Megane competes in the Freeride World Tour, and I write about the Freeride World Tour.

For those out of the loop, the Freeride World Tour is the competition to watch if you're into big mountain skiing. This past season, which featured a cadre of talented rookies, was particularly exciting.

My personal favorite highlight from the Freeride World Tour 2023 season was this mind-blowing backflip from rookie Max Hitzig.

While the Tour's on ice until next winter in the Northern Hemisphere, their website has loads of killer skiing content, from full competition replays to shorter run recaps. Follow this link to check it out.
