3. Open the application downloader. It will be called LastPass.dmg.

4. Drag LastPass into the Applications folder.

6. Open LastPass when the download is complete and sign in.

7. Open Safari, and in the topline menu bar in your Mac tap Safari (next to the Apple symbol), and then select "Preferences."

LastPass is a password manager for nearly all operating systems and browsers. It is a competitor to 1Password , Keeper , ZOHO , etc. The idea is nowadays, with many different accounts for banking, social networks, shopping, and more - it’s impossible to create and remember secure passwords for all the different sites that we use. Instead, you could remember one long, secure password, which you give to your password manager to then “unlock” all your other passwords. All of your other passwords are completely random, very secure, and stored by your password manager. This prevents you from having to remember multiple passwords - and eventually forgetting your passwords, as well as the dangerous tactic of password reuse !

I highly recommend looking into a password manager!

Not to spoil the beans or anything… but I just bought a 2020 M1 Mac Mini ! It should greatly enhance my video production capabilities (coming from a 2014 MacBook Pro which did not have H.265 encoding/decoding via hardware acceleration). Excited to see what this M1 chip is capable of and to help give me a better idea if I should get a 2021 16” MacBook Pro with a possible M2 chip in it… possibly being released in September 2021 🤞 ( spoiler alert !!)

My issues was that I attempted to install Lastpass via the Mac App Store (it has a 2.6/5 rating for a reason). After installing it, it did not prompt me to install the Safari extension. Uninstalling it and installing the direct download from LastPass worked for me.

How to set up two-factor authentication on Safari

Choose an authenticator.

There are many options when it comes to two-factor authentication. The most popular options include apps that can be downloaded to your smartphone from your app store, like LastPass Authenticator, Google Authenticator, or Authy. LastPass supports many two-step authentication apps.

Enable it for your accounts.

You can enable two-factor authentication for your iCloud or iTunes account via your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Windows PC, that is on the most current operating system. Go to Settings, then "Your Name", and "Password Security." Then turn on two-factor authentication.

Log in with extra protection.

After you hit "Continue," the next time you log in to the account, you will be asked to confirm your password and two-factor authentication, too. Enter the code from the app on your phone or tap the approval message sent to your smartphone.

Setting up your Safari and authentication to work with LastPass

You can use your iphone to authenticate any apple device where lastpass and safari are installed.

• Make sure you are signed into your LastPass account and your iCloud account in the browser on Macbook, iPad, or iMac desktop.
• Download the LastPass Authenticator app to your smartphone, or choose one of the other available multi-factor authentication options

• Set “Enabled” to yes and follow the steps to pair the app on your Android with your LastPass account

Password management app LastPass has announced it will be discontinuing its native macOS app on February 29th, directing users in an email to switch over to the new web-based version of the app that will replace it.

According to the email, LastPass is making the change to “provide the best experience for our customers,” citing changes made by Apple in Safari 12 in 2018 , which were designed to push developers toward offering browser extensions through native Mac App Store apps instead of the soon to be deprecated Safari Extension Gallery. While other apps, like 1Password , updated to implement the new system with their native apps, LastPass has decided to just remove support for the old native app entirely.

To replace it, LastPass will be offering a new Mac app that will support the new extension system. However, instead of being a fully native piece of Apple software, it’ll be more of a web app that’s “built with technologies shared with our other LastPass apps,” which the company says will make it easier to maintain its apps across multiple platforms.

The downside is that the new app is no longer built with native Mac technologies, which means that it looks worse (especially compared to the old app, which fit in much better alongside other native Mac apps). It also lacks deeper macOS features, like system-wide hot keys, which is also disappointing.

Customers who prefer the old Mac App Store version will theoretically be able to use it, but after February 29th, the app “will no longer be supported or receive security updates.”

The LastPass app on Mac and therefore also the Safari plugin do not work. When I try to log in, it shows me the animation of a safe unlocking and then goes back to the login form. LastPass on Chrome on the same computer works. 

I've deleted the app several times from my laptop using tools that remove all associated libraries as well. I've reinstalled from  https://lastpass.com/misc_download2.php  (using both the Safari and the Mac App links). 

LastPass on my iPhone and iPad work fine. 

I reached out to support and they said they would get back to me but now the support login is broken as well. (see ).

Make sure you ask the support person to check to see if any shared passwords are corrupted.  Somehow they have a way to see a corruption in shared passwords.  Once they told me which shared password was corrupted I just removed it from my lastpass and it started working again.

Safari and the Mac Lastpass app have been working fine since.

I am having the same problem.    I filed a ticket with LastPass and followed all the suggestions.  No resolution yet.  Are you using an M1 Mac?  I have to believe it is something unique about M1 Macs or something else since the issue doesn't seem to be happening to all Macs.

I just installed the latest update and it seems that the problem is resolved. I can now open the LastPass app and also use LastPass in Safari.

Not solved. I understand the theory of this solution, but how do we implement it if we cannot find the corrupt passwords? And if support is no longer working?

If they are no longer doing support, what does one do to even test this solution?

\I managed to contact them via  https://support.lastpass.com/s/contact-us?language=en_US  . I called them and they said they would get back to me and actually did. They emailed me with a link to the corrupt shared password. 

Oh man... I just installed another update and we're back to square one. It is broken again. I'm on LastPass 4.116.0 now. The previous version worked. This one does not. 

I have the same issue and I see that there are lots of people that do too (from searching).

I've had this for weeks. It's super annoying that I cannot use the Last Pass desktop as a paying customer.

I just see the spinning safe after I enter my username and password. 

I've uninstalled the app, restarted, reinstalled, etc. Just a waste of time.

According to Reddit, you know about this and you are fixing. Is that true? When will I have access to lastpass again?

I'm using a MacBook Pro on macOS Ventura 13.3.1 with an Apple M1 Pro chip. 

Did another full install after talking to support. No job. The bug is persistent.

Hey I may have found a  solution!

I opened up the LastPass app and entered in my login information  and the icon began spinning.  I then immediately went to the menu bar and went to File Menu and did "Clear Cache."

At first it just timed out.  I did it again and I am now logged in using my lastPass App.

I suppose the cache was too full or corrupted or something.. who knows?  It worked!

Don't forget to give me a thumbs up if this worked for you!

When attempting to log in to Lastpass login/password won't "stick." After entering the correct password, the login screen flashes (like the software accepts it), then within a second goes right back to asking for the password again. Safari extension and Lastpass app both react the same.

I had the same issue and opened a support case through  https://support.lastpass.com/s/createrecord/Create_Case  asking to specifically look for a corrupted shared password. They responded within a few hours saying I was right to request this and told me they had found one. But, after I deleted it, the issue was still there.

I then asked to check again and, lo and behold, there appeared to be another corrupted shared password. Deleting that one too, resolved the issue. Yay.

They also mentioned that they are working on a fix...

You are correct that this works. I have seen this for weeks to be a "work around", but it really is not.

First, you will have to do this every time you try to use the app. That is not a working app.

Second, this will remove any changes that you have made while offline! So if you made updates, say goodbye to those. Poof!

Third, while this "gets you in" the app still will not sync while you use this work around (a continuing part of the bug is that the desktop app won't sync anymore), so if you make changes with the app having connected this way, those will not sync and if you make changes elsewhere (say on a mobile app) those will not sync with the desktop app, so although this "gets you in" the desktop app thus accessed is not actually syncing or working.

It has been months now since the desktop app has last worked, because of this bug. Although I am a paying customer (and my company and employees too) and have been for years, I think I'm about ready to switch to another password manager. Does anyone have a recommendation for how to migrate to another app like 1password or a recommendation for another password manager in general? This has become too difficult to work around and lastpass does not seem to fixing it. What should I use instead and how do I migrate?

Bummer. I have a case going with their support and they cannot fix it either.

The suggested an app to be sure it's completely removed before I reinstalled. No joy. Didn't work.

What do you think about other options? I found 1password, but what else is there that lets you share passwords that it's easy to transfer the ones I have? Any advice?

Still doesn't work. I tried that link too, replies take a week or two. They found the corrupted passwords, but did not fix it. 

Yes, I use the LastPass Authenticator. It is triggered by my login request and I approve on my iPhone. 

Are you trying to login in the app directly or via the extension menu in Safari? If you tried in only one of the 2 options, can you try the other one?

I also had an issue where I had to login again and faced the same issue.  I did find another place in the community that said they were able to resolve the issue by finding and removing a corrupted "shared" password.  I reached out to LastPass and they identified a corrupted shared password.  I removed it and so far I am not facing the issue any more.  Crossing my fingers!

My main reason for using lastpass rather than the keychain is the ability to share passwords with my family.  I too have been very frustrated by this apparent bug.  Anyone know of another password keeper that allows you to share passwords?

Trying to login in the app directly, and via the extension and experience the same issue. Safari as the browser. After reading a couple other posts yesterday, I found that others were having this issue around June of '22 (possibly). I believe an update fixed the issues at that point. Since I'm unable to stay logged in for more than about 3 seconds, I can't tell if there is an update available.

How did you get last pass to find this corrupt password thing? Is that a check that I can do or do they have to do it? How would I even ask them?

This worked! 

I reached out to support. They just emailed me back with a corrupted shared password. I removed it and tried to log in again. At first, I saw the spinning safe but then I cleared the cache and it immediately logged me in.

Can you try to login via the app (not the extension), and then open the app menu (OSX menu bar top right) and tell me if it looks like that?

I'm looking to understand if you are logged in but somehow the app does not bring you to the vault. You would have the Log Out button, as opposed to Log In to LastPass

I quit the Lastpass app, restarted, logged in. I was kept logged in for about 15 seconds or so, then logged back out. My app menu looks like the example, but Quick Search and Vault are not active links. Where your screen shot says Log Out, mine says Log In to LastPass. Extension menu in Safari shows the login screen. Asks for the password because I can't stay logged in.

I tried the uninstall and then install.   No change.    I  can use Last pass with Chrome but not with Safari.   OS/X Lastpass menu also shows "Login to Lastpass" where your example says "Log Out".   Safari extension menu shows login window which when trying to login just blanks after 10 plus seconds of spinning.

One more thing… A feature no one talks about

It's great to have a feature like this in Safari — but it would be good to have this automated in iOS 18 . If Apple's web browser could automatically clear history after 24 hours it would be very useful, as you wouldn't leave a trail behind.

Apple’s AI plans for the iPhone just leaked. Here’s everything we know

Apple is the only major name in the world of Big Tech that hasn’t made its ambitious AI plans public yet. But that will change in a few weeks, with a focus on reimagining the iPhone experience. Bloomberg , citing internal sources, has detailed how Apple plans to integrate generative AI experiences with iOS 18, the next major build of its iPhone operating system.

The company plans to push new AI-powered capabilities not just in such in-house apps as Safari and Maps, but also in experiences like the notification system and a supercharged Spotlight search. Notably, Apple will push the bulk of AI processing to the iPhone’s silicon, and only a minor portion of it will be pushed to the cloud.

The likes of Google have been marketing processing as being on-device, allowing the Gemini Nano model to run natively on the Tensor silicon inside the Google Pixel 8 series phones for tasks like summarization, transcription, and smart reply. And it appears that Apple’s new AI tricks won’t stray too far off from what Google has showcased for Android phones.

Per the report, the AI push by Apple will open the doors for capabilities like transcription of voice memos, mirroring what Google has served up with its excellent Recorder app. Moreover, Apple will also leverage AI for media editing, a trick that is already available under banners like Magic Eraser and AI Unblur on Android phones via the Google Photos app.

The company is also said to be improving Spotlight’s capabilities while also enhancing the Safari web search experience. But the most notable upgrade will be to Siri, which is miles behind Google Assistant , especially in its new Gemini era.

“The Siri personal assistant will get an upgrade as well, with more natural-sounding interactions based on Apple’s own large language models,” says the Bloomberg report. Notably, Apple will lift the Siri experience not just on iPhones, but will also introduce a more powerful version for smartwatches.

On the fun side, Apple will leverage AI to let users create emojis on the fly, likely using the text-to-image pipeline. An automated version of this trick will also be available, one that dynamically reads the messages and suggests custom emojis tailored for the ongoing conversation.

Another notable upgrade that Apple has developed is related to notifications, something we haven’t seen so far. Using AI, the company aims to offer summarized recaps of notifications. This doesn’t just cover app notifications, call alerts, and messages, but will also include support for documents, news alerts, news articles, and webpages with different media formats.

A notable miss will be Apple’s own take on an AI chatbot, along the lines of Google’s Gemini or OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Instead, the company has reportedly partnered with OpenAI to create custom experiences built atop the GPT foundations. Interestingly, Apple is said to be still in talks with Google to offer Gemini tricks in a more meaningful way.

Apple is expected to announce its big AI plans at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 in just a couple of weeks.

Best Buy's Weekend Sale Has Steep Discounts on M2 and M3 MacBook Air

Best Buy has a huge collection of discounts on Apple's MacBook Air this weekend, including both the previous generation M2 models from 2022 and the brand new M3 computers that launched this year.

Best Buy today has every model of the 2022 13-inch MacBook Air available for $150 off , matching previous all-time low prices on the notebooks. These prices are available to all shoppers and do not require a My Best Buy Plus/Total membership.

The 256GB model is on sale for $849.00 and the 512GB model is available for $1,049.00 . These deals beat the previous prices we tracked earlier in the year by about $50.

You can get both models in all four colors: Starlight, Space Gray, Silver, and Midnight. Following the introduction of the M3 MacBook Air, Apple knocked the price of the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air down by $100, and it's still selling them alongside the M3 model.

You can find all-time low prices across the 15-inch M3 MacBook Air lineup at Best Buy, including up to $100 off these 2024 computers. Prices start at $1,199.00 for the 256GB model, and include both 512GB versions of the computer as well.
