Unlike its esteemed counterpart from Lucasfilm, Star Trek’s history with video games isn’t exactly stellar.
There are licensed Star Trek video games going back 50 years, but there’s never been a truly great Star Trek game, one whose appeal outstretches the limits of its existing fan base. Moreover, even the most celebrated Star Trek games, such as 2000’s Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force , 2002’s Star Trek: Bridge Commander , and the long-running MMORPG Star Trek Online , place an overwhelming emphasis on combat, which is only ever a last resort in Star Trek stories. Gene Roddenberry’s cosmic polemic often contains action, but it’s never about action; Star Trek is about compassion, curiosity, and camaraderie. To truly capture the essence of the spacefaring adventure series, a video game should be as much about talking as it is about flying and shooting, allowing players to explore new worlds, build relationships, and confront complicated moral dilemmas.
This seems to be the aim of Star Trek Resurgence , the debut release from Telltale offshoot Dramatic Labs, and the first Star Trek game in ages to be as character- and dialogue-focused as the television series. Set aboard a new ship and starring an almost entirely new cast, Resurgence is a branching narrative whose balance between interstellar intrigue, interpersonal conflict, and explosive space action hews closer to that of its source material than any Star Trek game in decades — maybe ever. As a game and as a piece of software, it leaves a lot to be desired. But as a Star Trek story, it definitely earns its pips.
Resurgence alternates between the perspectives of two player-controlled characters aboard the science vessel Resolute, incoming first officer Commander Jara Rydek (Krizia Bajos) and enlisted engineer Petty Officer Carter Diaz (Josh Keaton). The Resolute is recovering from a recent disaster that cost the lives of several of its crew and the reputation of its captain, Zachary Solano. Solano fears that he’s lost the confidence of his staff, and is counting on Academy protege Rydek to help restore his honor as the Resolute embarks on an important diplomatic mission. Over the course of the story, Rydek takes point on unraveling a mystery with galactic implications, earning the trust of the crew while also evaluating whether or not Solano is worthy of her own. Meanwhile, engineer Diaz deals with more of the nuts-and-bolts problems aboard the ship, as well as navigating a romance with a fellow officer.
As in a good peak-era Star Trek episode, the “problem of the week” is tackled from more than one angle, with some of the crew handling a social or interpersonal conflict while others investigate some related scientific or technological puzzle. Teamwork is an essential ingredient to Star Trek, and Resurgence highlights that it takes a variety of skill sets and perspectives to solve complex problems. There is a two-way relationship between the bridge crew handling the big picture and the specialists below troubleshooting the finer points. Alternating between these A- and B-plots also breaks up the story and the gameplay nicely, and introduces the player to a variety of likable, memorable characters with whom you interact differently depending on your protagonist.
The narrative moves along at a steady clip, with the stakes escalating organically from that of a typical Next Generation episode to something closer to a modern season-long arc of Discovery . Crucially, for a video game and for a Star Trek story, the player faces consequential, difficult, and timely choices.
In contrast to the (still far superior) Mass Effect games, which present players with clear-cut Paragon or Renegade paths to pursue, Resurgence ’s dialogue trees don’t always offer an obvious ethical binary. Will you risk a dozen lives to save one? Will you disobey a direct order to follow the advice of an impassioned subordinate? Which member of your crew do you trust more in a crisis, and will they trust you in a pinch? These decisions are all made on a short timer, forcing the player to think quickly and trust their instincts. This instantly makes Resurgence feel closer to the “real” Starfleet experience even than the expansive open world of Star Trek Online , which dictates most of your objectives for you; nearly every path ends with “fire all phasers.”
More than anything, it’s your relationships with the supporting cast that shape the variations in the narrative. It’s not simply a matter of passing each one’s individual loyalty check, allowing you to achieve some 100% “perfect” ending. You cannot please everyone and you cannot save everyone. (Or at least I haven’t yet in my two playthroughs.) Not only does this place the full weight of duty and command on the player and offer an incentive to replay the 12-to-15-hour game multiple times, but it also underlines one of the essential tenets of Star Trek: It is possible for two parties, in good faith and good conscience, to disagree. Sometimes a compromise can be reached, sometimes conflict can’t be avoided, but no one needs to stay enemies forever.
On the other hand, commitment to the Star Trek ethos does have its drawbacks. Starfleet’s strict code of conduct means that the players are somewhat railroaded. For instance, when enlisted engineer Diaz’s love interest is caught accessing files she’s not supposed to, you, as Diaz, can’t lie to cover for her. In a move typical of the franchise whose reputation for political radicalism is somewhat overblown, its core political conflict between a colonizing empire and their long-suffering protectorate sniffs of some unfortunate bothsidesism. Some of the sci-fi twists that complicate the plot do so at the price of nuance, introducing an overarching threat that forces all parties to work together without ever actually addressing what drove them apart in the first place. It’s a flaw found in a lot of past and present Star Trek, demonstrating the liberal-moderate belief that we can all just get along without committing to any meaningful change in the status quo.
It’s in the non-dialogue-driven gameplay elements that Resurgence truly stumbles. While the stealth and cover shooting portions are smooth and fun, a lot of the other mechanics are sluggish, tedious, or both. This particularly applies to PO Diaz’s engineering tasks, which feel less like puzzles or minigames and more like busywork. (Pull R2 to open this conduit, now LS+R2 to remove this isolinear chip, and then the next one, etc.) Fail conditions of certain minigames or stages can be disabled via a Story Mode option, but there is no way to avoid the game’s more mindless chores.
Star Trek Resurgence also suffers numerous technical glitches at the time of release, at least on PlayStation 4. It’s not uncommon for lines of dialogue to start late or cut off early, costing the scene important exposition or flavor. Keeping subtitles enabled can sometimes compensate for this issue, except on random occasions when the subtitles disappear altogether for a line or two at a time. Busier cutscenes, such as the game’s space battle finale, load sluggishly on PS4, creating seconds-long gaps between shots, killing the momentum of what should be a thrilling climax. These issues may be resolved in future updates, but at launch, they’re an undeniable drag.
Despite these glaring flaws, Star Trek Resurgence offers a space-worthy experience for Star Trek fans. Where other titles have offered a more complete picture of the Star Trek universe — letting players explore the breadth of the galaxy, walk the decks of their favorite starships, or build their own — only a rare few have looked beyond lore toward story . Fans don’t love Star Trek merely for the cool ships or deep mythology, we love it for the friendship between Kirk and Spock, and Picard’s growth from stiff loner to proud patriarch; for Sisko’s impossible moral dilemmas and Burnham’s quest for redemption.
Not even Resurgence ’s nearest spiritual ancestors, classic ’90s point-and-click adventures Star Trek 25th Anniversary or Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Final Unity , have captured that essential human element that makes for a great Star Trek story. Resurgence ties a worthwhile cast of characters to an interstellar adventure. Does Resurgence qualify as “great Star Trek”? Probably not, but it’s hard to argue that any video game has come closer.
Star Trek Resurgence was released on May 23 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. ‘Star Trek: Resurgence’ Game Sets May Release Date
| April 25, 2023 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 25 comments so far
Star Trek: Resurgence , an interactive narrative adventure game set in the Next Generation era, finally has a release date.
Star Trek: Resurgence
Dramatic Labs announced the game arrives May 23 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. Originally set for a Spring 2022 release, Dramatic Labs is confident now to set a specific date. This is the first game from the publisher formed by a team of industry veterans, including twenty former Telltale developers that have worked on critically acclaimed narrative games such as The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series , and The Wolf Among Us .
The USS Resolute
Resurgence is set shortly after the events of Star Trek Nemesis and it is set on board the USS Resolute. It tells an original story with players assuming the role of two principal characters, First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz. Here is the official game synopsis:
A worker uprising threatens the tenuous peace between two alien civilizations, and Starfleet is forced to intervene. Players experience the conflict and larger mystery from two key perspectives. The U.S.S. RESOLUTE’s First Officer Jara Rydek is part of the diplomatic envoy led by Ambassador Spock that’s tasked with finding a resolution – and uncovering the ultimate source of this tense situation. Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz highlights how the mission plays out from the lower decks, caught up in the events in his own unique way. Throughout the gripping story, players can interact with the Star Trek universe like never before, with moments of authentic action and critical decisions that shape the broader narrative in subtle and unexpected ways.

Throughout the game, players will immerse themselves in the Star Trek universe, interacting with new and returning characters through a variety of dialogue and action gameplay to determine the course of the story. One of the key features of the game is players making choices that have important consequences for how the story progresses.

One of the familiar characters included in Star Trek: Resurgence is Ambassador Spock. You can see 7 minutes of early gameplay below featuring Spock (via IGN).
Star Trek: Resurgence is launching on May 23, 2023 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 gaming consoles, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and exclusively on the Epic Games Store for PCs.
Here is the original announcement trailer (with the original release date).
No pricing has been set and the game is not yet available for pre-order. More details including an interactive FAQ can be found on the official website at startrek-resurgence.com .

Looking good.
Will definitely check this out with our teens. I’ve been looking for something new to play with them on our gaming PCs.
Looks like they redesigned the ship, as evidenced by the comic adaptation. She’s got a deflector dish, where before it looked like a horrible backwards kit bash Franken-ship. Alright, I appreciate the attention to detail. I question the lack of fanfare though, and dropping the game in May when the new Zelda is going to be sucking up all of the attention.
100% on the zelda competition – but Zelda will suck the air out of the room for months
Soooo…the mission is to put down a labor uprising?
I guess we’ll see but if it is, that’s a bad look there
I’m hoping that the ethical dilemmas will click in quickly.
As in “Surely, there is more than what’s on the surface…”
Let’s see. i want definitely to play this game. You know, in today you could use this medium to tell some stories, too. i am currently playing CP2077 and feels like some “Strange Days 2” (Strange Days 1995) from Kathryn Bigelow. I know that they do not have so many Budget. But it is possible
Looking forward to this. Can someone tell me, if it’s still that case, that Epic exclusive games usually arrive on Steam about a year later?
That would be disappointing. And pretty daft marketing.
It says PC release is coming in May, so I had assumed that would include Steam. We hesitate to install outside that platform.
As an aside, the gaming market is one of the key ways to drive teens to a franchise. It’s not just licensing for more revenue. It’s licensing to build demand for the original television and film content.
This is all the more so because GenZ were so physically isolated by COVID and are all the more socially engaged through their gaming and related chat groups. One of our teens got into SW this way.
Resurgence doesn’t look to be massively multiplayer, but it may still be able to match up with one player cooperatively. These kinds of things have a place in the dynamic.
Star Trek Online is at a point of maturity where it can be intimidating to get into and hard to find a group of younger players to team with.
Kurtzman and Paramount really need to think about finding a licensing partner that can create a popular massively multiplayer game for the younger crowd.
I tried to play STO, really couldn’t get into it. (Plus parts of the storylines made me mad, like the Dominion one.) I ended up settling for Star Trek Fleet Command but even then that player base skews older, I’m one of the youngest people in my alliance. So I absolutely agree with this, it would be nice to get another mmo.
I think Epic get it for a few months then it appears on Steam. I can’t see PC version selling as well while its on Epic
Does anyone know why there is no Nintendo Switch release? It’s the only console I own and wombat to play when it’s released!
Your wombat will need to get a PC or another console. The switch which I love is a woefully underpowered machine at this point and it takes a lot of work to port if you aren’t developing natively from the start
I’ll be on the lookout for reviews on this. There’s a boatload of great games out there competing for our dollars and time, and historically Trek games are pretty lame, imo. Depending on reviews, maybe I’ll grab it on digital sale at the PS store.
I’m excited for this. But it feels weird that they’ve shoe horned Spock into some relatively minor diplomatic dispute. Feel like he’s just there for name recognition and nothing else.
Now that liked a season of Picard I guess I got to say that I saw Spock and then couldn’t stop crying. Lol Kidding (not 6 watching the Big E go down over Genesis), nice thought to see what he is up to though pre destruction of Romulus. Sounds like had he had not gone missing he could have told Starfleet to not build robots programmed to act as slaves and saved Utopia Planetia. Would Picard under the influence of the Borg might have overruled him or noticed his illogic? Either way hope this game is good. Haven’t seen a good Trek game since Starfleet Command brought SFB to the comp, what happened to those?!?
Picard was not under the influence of the Borg. And Spock didn’t disappear until two years after the attack on Mars.
Well you’d think that Picard then would know better than to use robots programmed to act like slaves to build his evacuation fleet. Not a good idea. I’d attribute that to Borg actively communicating with his subconscious pushing AI research vs. unethical stupidity. Spock must have been too busy on Romulus? You’d think he would have been all “this is illogical”.
It was working fine until the Zhat Vash reprogrammed the Synths. I’m not sure how much Picard was in charge of running things on Utopia Planitia anyway.
Well given he seems to have ditched his friends to the point he doesn’t even know Crusher had a kid, you hope he’d be doing his job managing the fleet and not too lazy to have noticed the ethical dilemma. Or… Borg were manipulating his subconsciousness given they made him into a receiver..
Who do they have doing Spock’s voice?
Whoever they are wow, what a great job!! It sounds just like Leonard Nimoy!
SOME of the lines sound just like Leonard Nimoy to me, and some of them sound a bit off. I wondered in the beginning if they were using clips from when Mr. Nimoy was alive, but by the end, I didn’t think that.
Somewhere out there appearently are all the recorded lines for Star Trek: The Secret of Vulcan Fury by Nimoy and even Deforest Kelly. I don’t know it that is an interplay rumor but if it is not someone has to CGI that game finally and release it.

Star Trek: Resurgence Developers Hype an Epic Game With Galactic Consequences
Star Trek: Resurgence's developers tease what fans can expect from the newly announced decision-driven narrative video game coming in early 2022.
Among all the major surprises at 2021's The Game Awards , one of the biggest was the announcement of Star Trek: Resurgence . The upcoming video game will hit modern consoles exclusively through the Epic Games Store for PC. Developed by Dramatic Labs studio, Star Trek: Resurgence will be a choice-based video game. Many of Dramatic Labs' development team previously worked on beloved franchise-based and choice-based games with Telltale Games ( The Walking Dead , Batman: The Telltale Series , Tales From the Borderlands ) before launching the independent game studio. In Star Trek: Resurgence , the video game follows two Starfleet officers unraveling a sinister conspiracy pushing two civilizations to start a war.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, cinematic director Kent Mudle and lead writer Dan Martin teased what fans can expect from Resurgence. The creatives also explained how the Star Trek license works so well for choice-based, narrative gameplay and revealed where Resurgence fits in Star Trek's ever-expanding universe.
RELATED: The Game Awards 2021: Why God of War Ragnarök Deserves to Win Most Anticipated Game
How did the opportunity to play in the Star Trek Universe with Star Trek: Resurgence arrive?
Dan Martin: Our collective history of working together on licensed games gave us the credibility to take on a franchise of the stature of Star Trek . We've always prided ourselves on examining what makes an IP work, and leaning into delivering on those aspects. It also helped that we were all fans of Star Trek to begin with and brought our own passion to the project and this is a game I've always wanted to make. With almost 55 years of (real-world) history to the Star Trek franchise, there's a lot to live up to, and we want to do it justice in Star Trek: Resurgence .
What makes this particular time period in Star Trek history, after Star Trek: The Next Generation , the perfect era to set this game?
Martin: It was important to carve out some room to tell our original story in some uncharted space of our own -- where the outcomes aren't pre-determined by events we've already seen -- while still allowing us to connect to the larger Star Trek world. We found fertile ground in setting our game in the time following Star Trek: Nemesis -- as well as the TV shows of that era: The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , and Voyager -- and before the events leading up to the Romulan supernova, which is explored in Picard .
Players get to control First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineer Carter Diaz in making major decisions across the game. What can you share about these protagonists?
Kent Mudle: We'll be sharing more details about these characters closer to the release, but one of the important differences between our narrative adventure games and non-interactive storytelling is that the player gets to help shape these characters for themselves. What kind of leaders do they emulate? Kirk? Picard? Janeway? Burnham? When they are fighting for survival down in the trenches, what's more important to them: Duty or friendship?
RELATED: The Game Awards 2021: Why Returnal Deserves to Win Best Action Game
Dramatic Labs features plenty of narrative adventure game veterans from Telltale. What did you want to bring to this specific project?
Mudle: We put a lot of stock in the experience gained and lessons learned from our collective time at Telltale. But it's important to evolve. For us, that includes building the game in Epic's Unreal Engine, which has allowed us to bring a greater visual fidelity to the game.
Martin: We developed the story using our proprietary screenwriting and narrative design engine, Beanie™, which is a powerful tool for constructing interactive stories. We're bringing a variety of new gameplay styles to Star Trek: Resurgence that we're really excited to put in players' hands
Star Trek really does seem tailor made for the kind of games many of the development team have worked on to great success. How is it working with a license as iconic and enduring as Star Trek and what did you want to bring to the franchise?
Martin: As I mentioned, it's a lot to live up to. We all come to this game as fans of the franchise first. One of the things we strive for is to make a game that allows fans (and non-fans alike) to feel like they've stepped into their favorite feature film or TV show from this rich universe. That means delivering a broad Star Trek experience where you get to command the bridge of a starship, make tough decisions in the heat of the moment, engage in phaser fights, uncover mysteries, build friendships and spar with rivals.
What else can you tease about Star Trek: Resurgence to help whet fans' appetites?
Martin: First of all, I'm just thrilled that the world gets to see what we've been keeping under wraps while we've been working on the game.
Mudle: There will be more reveals to come as we get closer to release. Fans will see how it connects to some of the great Star Trek that has come before and how it charts a new course across the universe.
Developed by Dramatic Labs, Star Trek: Resurgence will be released in early 2022 for PlayStation 5 , PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S , Xbox One and exclusively through the Epic Games Store for PC.

Exclusive: William T. Riker Boards the Star Trek: Resurgence Game
Enter the all-new third-person narrative adventure arriving May 23!
StarTrek.com
It’s officially May, and with that, we see the launch of the interactive narrative video game Star Trek: Resurgence from developer Dramatic Labs later this month. The new third-person, choice-driven adventure game tells an original story set in the year 2380, in the era shortly after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation feature films.
In Star Trek: Resurgence , stationed aboard the U.S.S. Resolute , players will assume the role of two principal characters — First Officer Jara Rydek and engineering crewperson Carter Diaz — as they unravel a sinister mystery involving two alien civilizations on the brink of war. Throughout the game, players will immerse themselves in the Star Trek universe, interacting with new and returning characters through a variety of dialogue and action gameplay to determine the course of the story. We’re excited to exclusively reveal that William T. Riker will make an appearance in the game, with Star Trek legend Jonathan Frakes reprising the role.
StarTrek.com had the opportunity to connect with Resurgence writers Dan Martin and Andrew Grant on how Riker fits within the narrative.
“We took inspiration for our premise from an early The Next Generation episode ‘ The Last Outpost ’ that first introduced the Tkon Empire,” explains Grant. “Riker featured prominently in the episode. He has direct experience with Portal Six Three, guardian of the Tkon Empire, so including him in our narrative felt like an organic fit. And of course, we’re big fans of Jonathan Frakes!”
“We weren’t going to include Riker if we couldn’t have Jonathan Frakes return to the role,” adds Martin. “It was an absolute joy to work with him as he brought his classic Riker charm and command to our game.”
“From a story perspective, Riker also has a nice connection with Jara Rydek, the First Officer on the U.S.S. Resolute and one of our playable characters,” Martin continues. “After all, who knows more about being a First Officer than William T. Riker?”
In addition to Riker, Star Trek: Resurgence will also feature an appearance from the previously revealed Ambassador Spock , voiced by Piotr Michael. The Dramatic Labs team took great care in balancing beloved existing characters while giving their new characters like Jara Rydek and Carter Diaz the room to grow and establish their own place in Star Trek lore.
Speaking on the approach on finding that balance, Grant shares, “It’s always a thrill to be able to weave in iconic characters no matter what the franchise, but that was especially true with a character like Spock.”
“For the fans, it’s always fun to interact with and make an impression on a character you know so well, and as writers, Spock brings so much gravitas and sheer presence to every scene he’s in,” Grant notes. “That interaction and intersection with familiar characters is always nice, but at the same time, you want to introduce original characters whose fates are to be determined (more often than not, by the player!). Striking that balance is always essential.”
Star Trek: Resurgence launches on May 23, 2023, for worldwide release for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 gaming consoles, and exclusively on the Epic Games Store for PC.

Critic reviews for star trek: resurgence.
The story of Star Trek: Resurgence does an excellent job of capturing what makes Star Trek work by presenting strong characters and tough decisions. Some storylines lack closure and it doesn’t always run smoothly, but its heart is in the right place.
Resurgence is the perfect mash-up of dramatic Star Trek storytelling and Telltale-style decision making, but with too many QTEs.
Destructoid
Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.
If you're a Star Trek fan looking for a game that respects the series enough to get the details right, then as a Vulcan might say, Resurgence is the most logical choice. It has an intriguing narrative that takes the risk of having two protagonists and plenty of difficult choices for you to make. However, some of the overcomplicated mini-games and melodramatic cutscenes mar the last third of the game. While Resurgence isn’t a technical marvel by any means, you don't need a lot of bells and whistles to tell a decent story. And I'm willing to settle for that.
Still, as I said at the start of this review, Resurgence is the best Star Trek game since Elite Force. To expand on that, I’d say that Elite Force is the better video game based on Star Trek, because it’s a decent shooter (and there’s a handheld photon launcher, which is basically the most gleefully stupid thing ever conceived). But Resurgence is the best Star Trek Game. As an interactive adaptation of the popular television franchise, it succeeds. And though there are areas where it could do with more polish, where better decisions could have been made, and where I wish there was extra money to spend, all of that melts away when I consider that as someone who grew up watching The Next Generation, playing this game felt like returning home.
God is a Geek
Star Trek: Resurgence offers a genuine thrill for big fans of the series, and more of a curio to anyone else.
While there are some nuggets of gold within Star Trek: Resurgence's narrative, the game prioritizes tedious puzzles and clunky mechanics that break the sense of immersion that is crucial for this genre. The IP and some interesting characters are not enough to distract from the poor visuals, controls, and bugs that plague the majority of the experience.
GamingTrend
Filled to bursting with all the Trek-no-babble, easter eggs, in-jokes, and political intrigue you've come to know and love from the Next Generation era of Trek, Resurgence hits all the right notes, even if it does play it a bit safe. Now if we can just get the rest of the Tribbles out of Jeffries tubes…

Star Trek Prequel Movie In The Works With Star Wars Director
Toby Haynes, who directed episodes of Black Mirror, Doctor Who, and Andor, is lined up to make a Star Trek movie.
By Eddie Makuch on April 11, 2024 at 12:06PM PDT
A Star Trek prequel movie is in the works with Star Wars director Toby Haynes attached to direct, Paramount announced during CinemaCon. This has been rumored since January , and now it's confirmed. The movie is set for release sometime in 2025.
Haynes previously directed episodes of Doctor Who, Black Mirror, Sherlock, and the Star Wars series Andor. Collider reported on these details from CinemaCon.
Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote The Lego Batman Movie, is writing the untitled Star Trek film. Haynes has never directed or written a Star Trek movie, but he directed Black Mirror's Star Trek-inspired USS Callister episode.
The film is said to be an "origin story" that will take place prior to the events of 2009's Star Trek, which took place in 2255 and was itself an origin story. This likely means it will feature a different cast. The stars of the latest series, including Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, have been rumored to be coming back for a fourth film in their series, but it hasn't happened yet.
2016's Star Trek Beyond is the latest entry in the main Star Trek movie series, but the franchise has lived long and prospered on streaming with the TV shows Picard and Strange New Worlds.
The 2009 Star Trek reboot and its 2013 sequel Into Darkness were directed by JJ Abrams, before he handed off directing duties to Justin Lin for Star Trek Beyond. The three movies collectively earned around $1.2 billion at the global box office.
In addition to Pine, Saldana, and Quinto, the latest Star Trek movie series featured John Cho as Sulu and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. Yelchin tragically died in 2016 at the age of 27 after a motor vehicle accident in his driveway.

Will the bad batch's season 3 finale set up the next star wars animated tv show.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch will soon be coming to an end, so where does that leave Star Wars animation? Is another show already in the works?
- The Bad Batch's series finale may hide a major new development in the Star Wars universe.
- The show has become essential in Disney's new canon, revealing key details about Palpatine and more.
- The future of Star Wars animation remains a mystery, paving the way for new stories and revelations.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch 's season 3 finale airs next week, and there's still no word about the next animated Star Wars project – what if the series finale is hiding a major new development? Originally marketed as a direct continuation of Star Wars: The Clone Wars , The Bad Batch has become something more – it's not just a story about the aftermath of Order 66 and Clone Force 99 's life within the Empire. It has also set up countless narrative threads that lead through to the New Republic and the Star Wars sequel trilogy, too.
As such, it's arguably become Star Wars ' most important animated TV project in Disney's new canon, perhaps even more so than The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels . Without Star Wars: The Bad Batch , for instance, Palpatine's resurrection would still be a convoluted mystery. And yet, The Bad Batch is still, at heart, the story of Clone Force 99 and their "adopted" sister. Once that story ends, where will Star Wars animation head next? At this point, the only confirmed animated project on the horizon is Star Wars: Tales of the Empire , but The Bad Batch 's series finale could reveal something entirely new.
13 Essential Star Wars Animated TV Show Episodes Every Fan Should Watch
The bad batch season 3 is the end of a specific story.
The Bad Batch has been responsible for expanding the audience's understanding of Palpatine's cloning plans, explaining how the clone troopers were phased out in favor of stormtroopers, and reintroducing old favorite characters such as Cad Bane, Asajj Ventress, and more. But all those things happened to Clone Force 99. The story has never been solely about studying the aftermath of the Clone Wars. The audience learns everything about Palpatine, Tantiss, the stormtrooper program, and more because it is shown through the Bad Batch's eyes. Would Clone Force 99 have gotten so involved if it weren't for Omega? No. This is still, above all, their story.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch 's series finale premieres Wednesday, May 1, only on Disney+.
Since The Bad Batch 's season 3 finale is the series finale, too, it stands to reason that Clone Force 99's role in this era of Star Wars is coming to an end. Whether that be because of a tragic, untimely death or because they simply find a place to live out the rest of their lives in peace with one another remains to be seen. If, hypothetically, Hunter, Wrecker, Echo, and Crosshair manage to rescue Omega and burn down Tantiss, what will be left for them beyond a few minor appearances in something new? They'll have done their part. It will be someone else's turn.
So Many Bad Batch Spinoff Stories Have Been Left Untold
Throughout their travels, Clone Force 99 has encountered many new and compelling characters as well as familiar favorites, too. In three seasons, The Bad Batch has introduced plenty of plot threads that The Bad Batch itself doesn't necessarily need to resolve. An animated show focusing solely on the goings-on within the Empire might be tantalizing, especially with Star Wars: Tales of the Empire airing so soon after The Bad Batch ends. On the other hand, what if Captain Rex were to lead a clone uprising in the next animated series, or Star Wars decides to focus on bounty hunters, like Asajj Ventress, Fennec Shand, and Cad Bane?
Asajj Ventress' return is particularly interesting. They must have brought her back for a reason. Though the character had a major role in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, she later canonically died in the novel Star Wars: Dark Disciple by Christie Golden. So how and why has she returned in The Bad Batch ? With the Nightsisters now becoming major players once again in other Star Wars stories, particularly in Ahsoka , Tales of the Empire , and the Star Wars Jedi games, who's to say that Ventress can't be at the center of it all in an upcoming animated series?
The Future Of Star Wars Animation Is Still A Mystery - But Why?
For some reason, Star Wars has refused to share what the future of the franchise's animated slate looks like beyond Tales of the Empire . Why hold off on announcing something so important? Logically speaking, this could only mean one thing: The Bad Batch series finale sets up Star Wars ' next mainline animated series . Perhaps something happens while Clone Force 99, Omega, and the other child subjects try to escape Dr. Hemlock's base. Perhaps Rex and Echo's uprising begins right then and there. Maybe a new revelation about the unaltered clones and their genetic makeup changes everything that was known about the Force.
Even the Empire's young test subjects could be the focus of a new series – if they are Force-sensitive, their lives could be very difficult even after escaping Hemlock's clutches. Though it's a shame that The Bad Batch is coming to an end, there's a wealth of stories Star Wars can still explore in animated form. Hopefully, what that next story will be will soon become clear. Star Wars animation has historically been used to fill in the gaps between Star Wars' major stories and, as a result, elevate those stories to new heights, and Star Wars: The Bad Batch has fulfilled that purpose beautifully.
