The Helsinki Bike Tour Through the Nature of Finland’s Capital

Outer capital cities are usually a residential sprawl, but a Helsinki bike tour charts a route through a trove of vast green and conservation areas.
Helsinki is an attractive, contemporary and super stylish city; an easy-to-navigate collection of pretty architecture and fashionable outlets, broken up by parkland and a boat port which can transport you to the neighbouring islands, such as Seurasaari, in minutes.
Compact in size but not short on attractions, city wandering is a must, yet it’s easy to focus on the centre of a capital city and forget about the wider area surrounding it. In some capitals, the outer city is just a mash and sprawl of residential areas, but with 1000 kilometres of biking lanes that weave around nature-wrapped urban areas, the best way to understand the topography of Helsinki is to leave the centre and cover some ground on two wheels.
Finland’s National Heritage Services noted an unfamiliarity of urban residents with nature, especially in Helsinki, and tourists, too, gravitate towards the centre. Here’s how to see more on a Helsinki bike tour connecting forest to archipelago coastline.

How to Start Biking in Helsinki – Finding a Bike Tour
Helsinki cycle map, visiting halkolaituri and merihaka, cycling the kivinokka nature path, helsinki woodland in herttoniemi neighborhood, marjaniemi for helsinki beach , vuosaari paddling center, booking a helsinki bike tour, understanding finland’s relationship with nature, beyond helsinki , travelling to finland.
Luckily, just a few kilometres away is an outer green belt of the city, which visitors can easily access alongside the locals. Being able to cycle over 22km outside this much-loved Scandinavian capital meant embarking on a proper adventure.
It only takes a few kilometres and an active few hours to see an entirely new persona of a capital city. The trip I took with Happy Guide Helsinki, as part of my ‘Outdoors Finland’ adventure with Visit Finland, was a slight variation of the Green Trail Ride tour that they currently offer, except we finished at the Vuosaari Paddling Center to embark on some midnight kayaking, instead of returning to the city.

Helsinki Bike Tour Trail Stops
A bike tour in Helsinki covers a vast ground to places you wouldn’t, as a visitor, know about or think of. Points of interest outside larger parks and main city highlights and, instead, pristine corners, rocky coves and the most picturesque stretches of the archipelago coastline.
Our meeting point was Luotsikatu Street, near Kauppatori Market Square, where you’ll find the fish market and tourist boat docks. From here, we cycled around an area of Helsinki city centre that’s a little hidden and easily missed, stopping at Halkolaituri to see the longships and the ice breakers.

Helsinki’s Kauppatori Market Square.
We then continued to an area called Merihaka, which is well-known as the spot where people wash and dry their giant rugs. This area also attracts a young and hip crowd who can be found chilling on the small wooden decks, hosting small gatherings, some of which are known for their parties!
![bike tours helsinki A group of people bathing and rugs drying on a jetty in the waterside area of Merihaka in Helsinki.](https://www.bordersofadventure.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Merihaka-Helsinki-swimming-area.jpg)

Not many people outside local circles know about the Kivinokka nature trail, but this tree-lined environmental haven lined with cycle paths and walkways makes you feel like you are miles away from the city.
Hilly, narrow pathways with an air of untouched mystery lead to a viewing point of the Viikki nature reserve, overlooking fields of grain and a large expanse of water. This is a must-visit spot for wildlife and bird-watching enthusiasts.
![bike tours helsinki View from the Kivinokka Nature Path to a wide lake with islands of yellow vegetation, backed by forest.](https://www.bordersofadventure.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Kivinokka-nature-trail-Helsinki-Finland.jpg)

I don’t come from a country where you find a ski jumping ramp in the middle of wood swooping down into a field flanked by neighbourhoods and leisurely parkland. But this is Finland, and all outdoor activities are accessible and a normal part of the psyche.
We climbed this creaking wooden structure to test our bravery with the sheer height and peek at the adrenalin-fuelled journey down! The storm soon dashed our daredevil endeavours, and we had to get down quickly, which left us even more pumped with adrenalin! And to think I grew up thinking swings and roundabouts were outrageously fun!
![bike tours helsinki View from the top of a ski jump in summer season looking down towards the forest-set landing point and a group of biks.](https://www.bordersofadventure.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Ski-jumping-ramp-Helsinki-Woodland-Herttoniemi-Neighborhood.jpg)

Helsinki has a beach. Really – a small, sandy one with smooth rocks to climb all over. Marjaniemi Beach is one of the far corners of Eastern Helsinki and is a great resting spot with views across the Helsinki archipelago. Go and find this scenic residential hideout.
One of the most popular spots on Hailuoto, it was the perfect place to rest, with a view of the sea. If you have more time, you can stroll. Karri from Bike Tours Helsinki even gives you biscuits to fuel up.

The outdoors lifestyle is at the heart of the Finnish ethos, so if you think the day is done after cycling, you are not doing it right. The summertime is perfect for exploring the waterways of Helsinki, and with Natura Viva Vuosaari Paddling Center , we embarked on a night tour of the surrounding archipelago, leaving the mainland at around 10 pm.
This was a magical experience, kayaking in the moonlight, with no sounds except the pull of the paddles in the calm waters, our giggles of excitement, and whispers in the dark. With our head torches (and expert leader) guiding the way, we stopped on one of the islands to indulge in some Finnish snacks and treats, before returning to our starting point around 2 am the next morning.

Awesome shots of Helsinki! I was there 8 years ago and think I’m due for a return visit by the looks of it!

What’s the best way to take in a big city like Helsinki, Finland… and do so in the shortest amount of time possible?
One way to do it is by participating in a memorable guided bike tour!
During my recent trip to Finland, I spent a day in the country’s capital city, cruising around and seeing some of Helsinki’s most famous, historic and interesting sights with a company called “Bike Tours Helsinki.”
Bike Tours Helsinki is a small, but well-run bicycle touring operation that gives informative and entertaining guided bike tours around the city center of Helsinki, Finland.
The tours aren’t long or particularly challenging (anyone who knows how to ride a bicycle can participate), but the experience of cycling around downtown Helsinki while at the same time learning about the city, its people, and its history is something you will remember for the rest of your life.

Helsinki Highlights By Bike + Other Tour Options
There are four different bike tours currently on offer by Bike Tours Helsinki .
The most popular of the company’s bike tours (and the one I participated in myself) is the 3-4 hour Helsinki Highlights tour which will take you to the Cathedral of Helsinki and the Senate square, the Market Square and indoor market halls, Finlandia Hall, Kiasma contemporary art museum, Temppeliaukio (the city’s famous rock church), Töölönlahti (the Central Park district), the Olympic Stadium, and will introduce you to Finland’s sauna, design and coffee culture.
The company also offers a Sunset Sauna Cycle , which is a 3-4 hour tour where you will learn about the history behind public saunas, visit the Kallio, Tervasaari and Merihaka/Hakaniemi areas of Helsinki, and stop to bath in one of the city’s most famous public saunas!
![bike tours helsinki birds native to Helsinki, Finland](https://bicycletouringpro.com/btp-photos/uploads/2014/08/IMG_9342-660x430.jpg)
The Green Trail Ride bike tour is for those wishing to see Helsinki’s parks and nature districts. Throughout the tour you will visit the Viikki & Vanhankaupunginlahti nature reserves, enjoy the arboretum of University of Helsinki, and cycle through the famous Arabia design area. You’ll also be given a pair of binoculars to use so you can get a closer look at many of Finland’s most popular and rare bird species.
Finally, there is the West-Side Arts & Archipelago Cycle bike tour, which is a 4-5 hour bike tour which allows you to experience the Seurasaari open air museum, Sibelius monument/park, the Archipelago art houses, the headquarters of the wildly popular Angry Birds video game/movies, the home & studio of famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, and the Hietalahti cemetery.
More details on each of these bike tours can be found at: www.biketourshelsinki.com

How To Book A Tour
Booking a bike tour with Bike Tours Helsinki is easy. Just send an email with your name, the number of people in your party, and the preferred date of your bike tour of the following email address: [email protected] Or call the company directly at +35844 502 0066 . Once your tour has been scheduled, your only job is to show up for the start of the tour at your scheduled date and time.
The company’s bike tours operate every single day of the week – from 10 AM to 3 PM. Each tour lasts between 3 to 5 hours and should be booked at least a day in advance.
The cost for the tours (at the time of this review) is between 50 and 60 Euros (depending on which bike tour you choose to participate in). The price of the tour includes a bike for you to ride for the duration of the tour, a knowledgeable guide, a helmet, a snack, and (depending on which tour you choose) other extras (such as bird-watching binoculars or entrance to a local sauna).
![bike tours helsinki IMG_7647](https://bicycletouringpro.com/btp-photos/uploads/2014/07/IMG_7647-660x440.jpg)
Where To Go For The Start Of The Tour
Bike Tours Helsinki has two different locations that they use for the start and finish of their bike tours. They are conveniently located on the two opposing ends of Helsinki, making it easy for you to reach the destination closest to you – depending on where you are staying in the city.
Selkämerenkatu 6 is in the Ruoholahti district, just a block away from the Ruoholahti subway station. If you arrive in Helsinki on a cruise ship that docks at the West Harbour, this is the location you will use, which is only a 1.5 km walk away.
The company’s other location at Luotsikatu 2 i s in the Katajanokka district near the Uspenski Russian Cathedral. Trams number 4 & 4T stop just around the corner from the shop and this location is also just a short 1 km walk from Helsinki’s Esplanadi Boulevard or the Senate Square.
![bike tours helsinki three people on bicycles touring around Helsinki](https://bicycletouringpro.com/btp-photos/uploads/2014/08/IMG_9307-660x440.jpg)
How Skilled Of A Cyclist Do You Need To Be?
There are currently four different bike tours of the city on offer by Bike Tours Helsinki . The Helsinki Highlights bike tour is both the cheapest and most popular tour on offer by the company and anyone that knows how to ride a bicycle can participate. There are no major hills to speak of during the entire 3+ hours of the tour, but there are at least one or more short climbs. You don’t need to be a “cycling nut” in order to participate in any of the Helsinki bike tours, but you do need to know how to ride a bicycle, cross the street with confidence and stop on command.
Tour participants range in age from 8 to 80 and the group size is usually quite small – anywhere from 2 to 10 people per bike tour. Many of the people who choose to participate in a guided bike tour of Helsinki, Finland do so because they see it as a unique and pleasurable way to spend the day with a friend, significant other or the entire family.

Do You Need Your Own Bicycle?
When you arrive at one of the two Bike Tours Helsinki headquarters you will first be equipped with a bicycle and a helmet (everything you need to complete your bike tour of the city).
While you can bring your own bicycle on the tour if you like, most people don’t go through the hassle. Instead, the company has a small fleet of bicycles on hand, which they provide for use on any of their guided bicycle tours.
The bicycles are commuter-style bicycles with flat handlebars, a casual riding position and smooth city tires. The bikes have both back pedal foot brakes and one hand brakes so you feel free and comfortable to cruise around the city. They are the perfect cruiser bike for citywide sightseeing!
On the company’s bike and sauna tours they use single speed cruiser bikes with high handlebars and a rack at the back to carry any bathing gear you might with to bring with you. And on the company’s longer tours outside of the city center, they use 21-speed hybrid or mountain bikes – depending on the nature of the tour.

In Summary: Bicycle Touring In Helsinki, Finland
I thoroughly enjoyed my bike tour of Helsinki, Finland. My tour guide (Anssi – the blonde-haired young man in the photos on this page) was super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. He was able to pass on a great deal of information about both Helsinki and Finland in general. We covered a large percentage of the city center on the bike tour and hit most of the city’s major attractions.
My favorite part of the tour was the city’s indoor and open-air markets, where all manner of things were being sold (from fish to fudge, kitchen appliances and more).
To learn more about Bike Tours Helsinki and/or to sign up for a bike tour of your own on your upcoming visit to the beautiful country of Finland, be sure to check out the company’s website at www.biketourshelsinki.com

We have four different meeting points for our bike tours. Most of the tours, such as Helsinki Highlights by Bikes, Sunset Sauna Cycle, Arts & Archipelago Cycle, Berry Picking by Bike and White Night Ride have a meeting point in the very heart of the city on Narinkka Square in Kamppi , which is the modern center of Helsinki.
For private tours within a walking distance from the cruise ship and ferry ports of West Harbour, we use our meeting point in the street address of Santakatu 2E in the Ruoholahti neighborhood located close-by.
For Porvoo by Bike as well as the customized Lake Tuusula day trip and other longer tours outside Helsinki the meeting points is in the street address of Vyökatu 7 in Katajanokka neighborhood.
For Fat Bike Forest Ride our meeting point is at the Vuosaari Paddling Center in the street address of Harbonkatu 12, Helsinki. We also offer fat biking at Nuuksio national park with transfer from the center of Helsinki.
You will always get the information on your meeting point as well as your personal arrival instructions along with the confirmation email for your tour. Please read it carefully!
![Kamppi Meeting point in Kamppi](https://biketours.happyguidehelsinki.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2017/01/narinkka2.jpg)
Our meeting point on Narinkka Square in Kamppi is very easy to reach from anywhere, since it’s the modern center of the city. Kamppi is the biggest downtown shopping center and Narinkka square is the home of famous Kamppi Chapel of Silence .
We are based exactly on the other side of the square from the Chapel. When you find black containers with bicycle symbols you will find us. The Poni bikes are lined on the side of the container (look at the photo above!)
The exact street address is Narinkka 3, Helsinki .
Connections to Kamppi
Kamppi has excellent connections from all the cruise ship ports and we are also two blocks away from the Main Railway Station where the airport buses and trains arrive.
From West Harbour berths (LMA & LV7) it’s only a 250 meters walk to Terminal 2 (where Tallink Silja and Eckerö Line ferries leave). From Terminal 2 there’s a direct connection to Kamppi with tram number 9. Get off at Simonkatu stop. There you can already see the wooden structure of Kamppi Chapel. It is only a 15 minutes tram ride. In West Harbour you can buy tickets from the ticket machine located by the tram stop.
From Hernesaari berths (LHB, LHC & LHD) comes local bus number 14 to Kamppi. It is a 15 minutes bus ride. Get off at Kamppi (M) stop when you see McDonalds on your left. Walk 50 meters back on the same side walk as the bus stop and take first (walking) street left. Now you’re walking on the side of Kamppi shopping center. Proceed and soon down & right you will find the Narinkka square. Please note! Don’t get off at Kampintori stop, which is one stop before Kamppi (M).
From Katajanokka cruise ship berths and Viking Line terminal take tram 4 to the Lasipalatsi stop. From Olympiaterminaali and Linda Line terminal, tram 2 comes takes you to the Simonkenttä stop. It’s only around 15 minutes trip. Tram tickets can be bought from one of the sales points or parking ticket machines around the terminals (see link for exact locations below).
TRAMS AND LOCAL BUSES HAVE A DISPLAY TELLING YOU THE NAME OF THE STOP.
Bus tickets you can buy directly from the driver by cash. Tram tickets must be bought in advance from one of the ticket machines or sales points. View the locations >>

Vuosaari Paddling Center is located about 15 kilometres from the center of Helsinki but you can easily reach it by public transport cause it´s just off our city metro / subway line.
Take metro train from the city center to Vuosaari as the final destination and get off at Rastila stop. You can connect to metro for example in Kamppi or at the Central Railway Station.
Get out at the Rastila metro stop and exit from the doors in the end side of the train (when you come from city center). There is a bus stop for line 560 (final destination: Myyrmäki). The fourth stop on the route is called Harbonkatu, which is the street that starts just before the bus stop. Vuosaari Paddling Center is located in the end of this street.
Equally you can walk one kilometer on Meri-Rastilan Tie street, which starts when you take left after exiting the metro in Rastila. Then turn down and right on Harbonkatu street where you will see the Natura Viva sign.
The exact street address of Vuosaaren Melontakeskus / Vuosaari Paddling Center is: Harbonkatu 12, Helsinki.

You can choose from our packages or we can work with you to design the best trip to suit you.
For small group tours, you can choose between electric and unassisted mountain bikes. Larger groups will be carried mostly out by electric bikes.
