I can hear my better half, Steve, now: “Do you really need a dedicated travel tea mug? Can’t you brew a cup of tea and then use any ol’ travel mug to take it on the go?”

Yeah, babe, you could. (And he probably knows what’s coming next.) But I like to have the right tool for the job, and there is good reason to be particular when it comes to a travel tea mug.

Sure, I could place loose tea leaves in a single-use paper steeper or basket steeper and use my favorite travel coffee mug for the job , but travel tea mugs are made with built-in tea steepers (ones that allow you to tightly close the lid while your tea steeps), which means no waste and a hotter finished brew. Plus, coffee mugs tend to take on coffee flavor over time. A dedicated travel tea mug helps keeps a serious tea drinker’s tea tasting pure and clean.

In my quest for the best travel mug to take my cuppa on the road, I sought out a leak-proof model that ranked high in the heat retention department . I also wanted a mug that was easy to grip and to drink from. And because it’s nice to have stylish gear, one that looked good, too. Here are my winning picks and how I tested:

The Very Best Tea Infuser Travel Mug: The Tea Spot Everest Tea Tumbler

The Everest’s double-walled, vacuum-sealed stainless steel insulation kept 22 ounces of tea hot and fresh tasting, and its screw down BPA-free top was terrifically leak-proof. I fell hard for its rugged adventure-meets-urban-chic look, and had a hard time deciding which of its four stylish colors I liked best.

The Everest also won my vote for smart design and functionality with an innovative screw-top and sipping mechanism that stay connected to the mug while you drink (which means when you remove the part of the lid that allows you to drink your tea, it won’t go tumbling down a cliff, through a subway grate, or down between that impossibly narrow space between the seat of your car and your cup-holding console).

The stainless steel steeper basket on this model provided ample room for water and tea leaves to mingle as my tea steeped, and its small holes kept fine leaves from passing into my tea, making a clean and full-tasting brew. The easy to grip exterior is much like that of the popular Hydro Flask water bottle so, if you’re a Hydro Flask fan , you’ll likely love The Tea Spot Everest, too.

The Everest fit well in a tote bag and was also comfortable to carry on the outside of a backpack, using a carabiner clip . And, like all of the travel tea mugs I tested, it can be used for iced tea as well as plain or infused fruit (aka spa) water.

The Next Best (aka Runner Up) Travel Tea Infuser Mug: The Tea Spot Voyager Tea Tumbler

The Voyager, also by The Tea Spot, won my runner-up vote. At 16-ounces, it’s a smaller mug than the Everest but that’s where most of the differences end. This mug kept my tea hot and fresh for 6 hours, and is fitted with the same type of high quality stainless steel steeper basket as the Everest. Its smartly designed leak-proof lid has a comfortable, easy to drink from sip-cup style and doesn’t require removing to use—simply press down on a pop top to drink, then press it again to lock the top into spill-free mode. With its sleek metallic, glossy finish and no loop handle (for carabiner or finger hold), this model is stylistically more ‘urban’ than ‘adventure’, but also, according to highly-rated reviews for both products, a bit more vulnerable to scratches than the Everest. It’s easy to grip and carries well in a tote bag or pocket of a backpack or gym bag.

Other Brands I Tried:

Zojirushi travel mug with tea filter shocked me and my editor when this mug didn’t win over my other contenders. Though this darling brand of the product review world took the gold in our best travel coffee mug test and kept my tea even hotter than its competitors at 6 hours, it is designed with a problematic steeping mechanism. To use this mug, you place loose tea leaves inside and add hot water. A filter fitted at the top of the mug blocks the leaves from flowing out while you drink your tea, but, as any true tea drinker knows, for however long you travel with your tea, the tea continues steeping. So, whether we’re talking a few minutes post-ideal steep time or several hours, you’ll be drinking an over-steeped brew (not tasty!). (One reviewer on Amazon noted that tea leaves can be put into the strainer basket, steeped with the mug turned upside down, and then removed. But the basket is so small that, though this works with some tea leaf types, it allows neither ample space for leaves to mingle with water while steeping, nor enough room for large loose tea leaf varieties to steep.) The top, which is made up of multiple and functionally unclear parts (a pain to both wash and keep track of), must be entirely removed to drink the tea, which makes it awkward if not impossible to safely drink from on the go. Used as a canteen-style tea-steeping vessel (to pour tea from as soon as it’s steeped) or to keep tea that’s brewed in a bag or independently from and then transferred to the mug incredibly hot for over 6 hours, this is a great product, but as an on-the-go tea mug, it doesn’t cut the mustard.

The four remaining models I tested, the Uendure Glass Infuser Travel Mug , the Lotus Glass Tea Tumbler , the Pure Zen Tea Tumbler , and the Sacred Lotus Love Sacred Glass Tea Infuser Tumbler were constructed of glass and sell in the $25 to $28 range. None of them (even with easy-to-grip insulating neoprene sleeves complete with nifty loops for carrying) had heat retention capability that came anywhere close to that of my winning contenders, and, though they were sexy looking, they were too fragile for true on-the-go usage. (A note that came with one of the models warned that the glass “may break if you drop it, knock it, or bang it with a metal spoon”.) Their open top lids made for challenging drinking on the go. So, while these might be stylish for drinking at a desk (though you’ll have to watch your keyboard if the mug gets knocked over), they’re too fragile and not practical for real on the go use.

How I Tested

I brewed loose black tea in seven leading travel tea mugs. After brewing the tea, I removed the tea basket and took the temperature of each mug’s tea using a digital thermometer . I closed the lids tightly, then measured the temperature of each tea again after 1 hour, 4 hours, and 6 hours, recording the change in temperature at each interval.

In the breaks between temperature takes, I rolled my tightly closed filled travel tea mugs on the floor; turned them upside down, and gave them all a good shaking around to test for leaks. I took a look at how many parts came with each model and how easy they were to clean. I also considered sipping mechanism design, steeper basket quality (did the basket allow ample room for proper steeping), overall durability, and style.

The Takeaway:

The company Tea Spot makes the best tea infuser travel mugs—models that brew a great cup of tea and are easy to take on the go. Buy the Everest Tumbler for slightly larger capacity and a more rugged, outdoor-adventure-ready design. Buy the Voyager for a smaller travel tea mug that's perfect for urban commuters.

The Best Tea Infusers That Come Recommended by a Tea Expert

From mesh baskets to travel-friendly tumblers, our favorites will help you brew the perfect cup.

  • Our Top Picks

Our Favorite Tea Infuser

Factors to consider, our expertise.

Food & Wine / Kevin Liang

An excellent cup of tea begins with impeccable brewing. Whether you’re using an electric kettle or a traditional teapot , preparing tea requires using specific methods to turn it into the best possible version, which is why tea enthusiasts can tell the difference between a well-brewed cup and one done hastily.

In order for tea to be at its best, containing the most lovely flavors and aromas, it should be infused into hot water using a vessel that gives the tea leaves space to expand. "An infuser is a great way to make loose-leaf teas," says Lisa Boalt Richardson , director of the World Tea Academy and author of Modern Tea: A Fresh Look at an Ancient Beverage . But with multiple types of infusers available, it can be hard to know which one to choose. So, with help from a tea expert, we’ve highlighted our favorite mesh, ball, and glass infusers. That way, you don't have to keep guessing.

Best Overall

Finum stainless steel mesh brewing basket.

The fine mesh keeps particles from entering your cup, and its lid helps retain heat while doubling as a drip tray.

Its design may not appeal to everyone.

Those intimidated by the heat of metal tea balls will breathe a sigh of relief using this mesh alternative, which is easier to handle while hot due to the BPA-free plastic frame that doesn’t conduct heat. It’s ideal for larger tea leaves because they’ll have plenty of space to infuse the water, but it also works well for smaller leaves thanks to the fine stainless steel mesh that prevents even the smallest particles from entering your beverage.

Suitable for both mugs and kettles, you can use it for brewing a single cup or an entire pot of your favorite loose-leaf tea. And once it's done brewing, the lid will act like a saucer for the basket to prevent any last drops from trickling onto your surface. The look of its practical design may not appeal to everyone. But when it makes tea this good, who really cares? You may even find it quickly becoming one of your tea-making essentials .

Material: Stainless steel, plastic | Includes: Brewing basket and lid | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes

Best Overall, Runner Up

Oxo brew tea infuser basket.

It has a modern design with extra small holes so no loose leaves slip into the mug.

The arms are not adjustable, so it might take up too much space or clog your kitchen drawers.

The OXO Brew Tea Infuser is a thoughtfully designed basket and lid combo, with a durable stainless steel basket that will last for years to come. Its extra-small holes prevent loose leaves from drifting into the mug, and its spacious basket can fit a suitable amount of leaves. The winged arms are wide enough to easily stay put on a variety of mug sizes, so you'll reach for it no matter which of your mugs are clean that day.

Similar to the Finum, its lid helps retain heat, and the extended handles stay cool to the touch while the interior basket heats up (and stays warm). In addition, the bottom of the handles have silicone touches, reducing the potential of scratching your favorite mug. Due to its size, we wouldn't recommend using a particularly small cup.

Material: Stainless steel, silicone | Includes: Brewing basket and lid | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes

Best Ball Infuser

Oxt 3pcs tea infuser upgraded tea strainer.

You can brew multiple cups of tea at once with this rustproof set.

The mesh has larger holes than some other models.

Featuring a chain that hooks the ball to a mug or kettle, this set of three tea balls makes tea infusing quick and simple. They’re functional for any type of tea and close tightly to prevent any bits from landing in your cup. Once your tea is brewed and you’re ready to remove the infuser, you’ll unlatch the mesh ball and dispose of the contents.

To make a fully-flavored cup, you’ll only want to fill the ball halfway, giving the leaves space to expand as they soak in the water. Because the mesh has larger holes than some other options, these balls are best suited for tea with larger leaves, as they can allow some fine particles to sift through.

Material: Stainless steel | Includes: 3 (2.2-inch) tea balls | Dishwasher-Safe: No

Best for Travel

Pure zen tea glass bottle with infuser.

You can use it for hot and cold-brew teas, and its double-walled glass will keep it from sweating, leaking, or holding on to odors or flavors.

It won't keep your tea insulated as long as some stainless steel models.

For those of us who love to take our tea on the go, you can't go wrong with Pure Zen's tea infuser tumbler. Unlike most travel containers on the market, this one is made of double-walled borosilicate glass, which makes it ideal for enjoying the purest flavor of all your favorite teas and helps maintain an ideal temperature for longer.

Its innovative design, with removable lids on both sides, allows you to use the infuser either at the top or bottom of the bottle. This makes it useful for both short brews (with the infuser at the top) and longer, cold brews (with the infuser at the bottom) — or you can remove it altogether for a bottle of fruit-infused water. And its glass walls take the guesswork out of how much water you can add, preventing any unintentional spills. Although it won't keep your tea warm (or cold) as long as some stainless steel models, its versatility and functionality more than make up for it.

Material: Borosilicate glass, stainless steel | Includes: Gift box, glass bottle, 2 lids, removable tea basket, and neoprene travel sleeve | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes

Best Handle

Oxo brew twisting tea ball infuser.

The extra-long handle makes it great for any size mug, and its twisting feature allows you to scoop and empty it with ease.

It doesn't include a stand to catch the drips when you're done brewing.

This OXO infuser is another take on the tea ball, but this time with a few extra features. Rather than a chain that hooks to the mug, this one has a long neck with a plastic handle that allows you to rest it against the side of your cup or even stir your tea while it brews. And, instead of having to open your tea ball manually to fill it, this one only takes a twist and a scoop, and then you're ready to steep all your favorite loose-leaf teas.

Its twisting feature also makes it pretty easy to empty and clean without anything getting stuck in the holes while making it less likely that any stray leaves escape as you brew. Its one drawback is that it doesn't come with anything to rest it on for catching drips after you're done.

Material: Stainless steel, plastic | Includes: Twisting ball infuser | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes

Teabloom Glass Tea Infuser

It’s suitable for most teapots and mugs and is safe for microwaves and dishwashers.

Small leaves may get into the water through the slits in the glass.

Suitable for various vessels, from a large kettle to a single mug , this versatile infuser is an excellent choice for individuals and households with multiple tea drinkers. It’s made from a durable type of glass that can withstand and retain heat well (so you can use it on the stove, in the microwave, and even throw it in the dishwasher), plus the lid doubles as a drip tray to keep your countertop clean after you remove the infuser.

Unlike some metals, glass won’t add any unwanted flavors to your tea, making this model one of the best options for lighter teas with more delicate flavor notes. And Its slits are laser-cut, so they're extra-fine; however, they may still let a few more small leaves or particles through than some metal infusers.

Material: Borosilicate glass | Includes: Infuser and lid | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes

Best Kettle

Breville smart tea infuser compact tea maker.

Numerous presets take the guesswork out of brewing, and it doubles as a basic water kettle.

The instructions aren’t very thorough, meaning it might take some trial and error.

It's never been easier to customize your perfect cup, thanks to the presets of this Breville tea maker. Simply add water to the kettle and tea leaves to the infuser, and then tell the machine how hot you want the water to get and how long you want it to steep. Your tea will come out as mild or strong as you prefer, and the temperature presets denote which type of tea they’re ideal for, taking the guesswork out of brewing. That way, you can have the perfect flavor profile to enhance any new tea-based drinks you might want to try out.

The kettle can make up to four cups of tea at once, and, with its compact size and attractive design, you can easily store it in a cabinet or on your countertop. Figuring out how all its flashing lights and buttons work may be a bit difficult at first, but with a little bit of trial and error, you'll be brewing a flawless cup in no time.

Material: Glass, brushed stainless steel | Includes: Electric kettle and base, removable tea basket | Dishwasher-Safe: Yes (the infuser)

The Finum Reusable Stainless Steel Brewing Basket is our top pick because it’s great for all types of tea and is easy to use and store. The plastic will keep you from burning your hands, and the lid doubles as a drip tray to prevent spillage. For similar reasons, we also like the OXO Brew Tea Infuser Basket .

Infuser Type

Tea infusers come in an assortment of types, with the major ones in basket and ball form. Basket infusers sit on top of a mug filled with loose-leaf teas and often come with a lid to trap heat. The baskets' size and shape allow the leaves to unfurl and release their potent potential fully — and some lids double as a coaster or drip tray. Infusers are available as balls that open in half and lock. They're much smaller in size and can easily go with you while traveling, though they typically don't allow as many leaves to fully unfurl inside as baskets do. Other infusers sit directly inside a kettle or travel container.

In addition, an infuser can come in a range of materials, with the most common being steel. Stainless steel models are durable and can normally be cleaned easily in the dishwasher. There are also glass models, which some people prefer to preserve the delicate flavors of their tea. Depending on what type of mug or brewing vessel you use, some options may work better than others.

Ease of Use and Care

You’ll want to choose a tea infuser compatible with your needs and lifestyle. If you have a hard time working around hot metals, choose one with plastic or other heat-resistant materials around its edges so you don’t have to worry about hurting yourself. Some models also have additional features that make them easier to use, such as a long handle or a design that makes it easier to remove or pour. Most of our recommended infusers are dishwasher-safe, so cleanup typically requires minimal effort. However, you may have to put in some extra work to extract any stuck tea leaves.

Serving Size and Design

Depending on how much tea you like to drink in one sitting, you may want to pay attention to the size of your infuser. Some infusers — like tea balls — are better for infusing a single cup of tea, while larger infusers can serve up to four cups ( tea party , anyone?). Another thing to consider when it comes to size is how big the openings are on your infuser. Infusers with very small openings, like those made of metal mesh, are less likely to allow any tea leaves or fine particles to escape into your finished cup. However, those with larger holes may let a few pieces slip past and are better suited for bigger tea leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

A tea infuser is a tool designed to steep loose-leaf tea while preventing small particles from getting into your drink. Many tea infusers are made from mesh stainless steel to do just that.

“Loose-leaf teas are whole tea leaves or broken whole tea leaves," says Richardson. "They can offer a greater depth of flavor, but since they are not in a teabag or sachet, there isn’t anything to allow the tea leaves to be removed from the teapot or teacup.” That's where a tea infuser comes in handy.

Using a tea infuser involves combining tea leaves and hot (or cold) water. “The tea leaves are placed in the infuser and then set in a cup or teapot,” Richardson says. “Hot water (sometimes boiling but not always — green teas need lower water temperature) is poured over the tea leaves, and then the tea leaves are steeped in the water for anywhere from two to five minutes depending on the tea.” You can also steep some teas over a longer period in cold water to make a cold brew or iced tea.

On average, a teaspoon of tea leaves per cup of water is a good starting point, according to Richardson, but she says you can always adjust depending on how strong you want your tea to be.

“As a rule of thumb, adjust the amount of tea in the infusion instead of adding more time to steep the tea,” Richardson says. “If tea leaves are left in the water for too long, your tea will become too bitter.”

Contributor Ariane Resnick is a special diet chef, certified nutritionist, and bestselling author who typically finds herself craving tea when the weather turns cold. She was excited to speak with Lisa Boalt Richardson , director of the World Tea Academy and author of Modern Tea: A Fresh Look at an Ancient Beverage , to learn everything possible about tea infusing and help her determine the best tea infusers on the market.

5 Excellent Tea Tumblers for Travelling with Loose Leaf

Tea tumblers are the perfect item to have if you’re travelling or just want to prepare tea in a bottle. You can still use tea bags, but most tea tumblers make taking loose leaf tea on the go more convenient. They are great whether you prepare your tea to go hot, iced or even cold brew . I have tried my fair share of tea tumblers over the years, and this is a small collection of the ones I find to be excellent based on their quality, durability, usability, and affordability. If you need to take your loose leaf tea on the go, I think a reliable tea infuser bottle is important.

5 of the Best Tea Tumblers

In someway, these five I recommend are different from one another. It ultimately comes down to what you find is the most important feature. These tea tumblers are either made from glass or stainless steel, so the actual bottle should not affect the taste of your tea. Most of the brands below also market their tumblers as a great bottle to make fruit infused water.

tea tumblers

This tea tumbler from Libre Tea (Canadian brand!) has been my go-to for the longest. I’ve had mine for over 5 years with no issues. It’s different than most tea tumblers you’ll find because it encourages you to let tea leaves loose as it doesn’t have an infuser basket, but a fine mesh strainer at the drinking top instead. Letting your tea leaves steep loose give you the opportunity for the best flavour since they are not expanding in a tight space and therefore don’t have enough room for flavour extraction. This also is a great way to encourage multiple steeps from leaves as you can just refill on the go.

However, Libre Tea also gives you the option to steep teas that can’t handle longer or multiple steeps. Check out their website here to see how to use their glass infusers.

What I also love about this tea tumbler is that the interior glass is protected by a strong BPA free poly exterior. I do have some entirely glass tea tumblers (as you’ll see below) but sometimes that extra protection is necessary so I don’t shatter my beloved tea infuser bottle!

Capacity: 9 ounces or 14 ounces Price: $21.95 or $26.95

The Lotus Glass Tea Tumbler by Sacred Lotus Love

With this tea tumbler you have the option of steeping your tea with the infuser basket or steeping tea loose in the bottle with the strainer. Both the infuser basket and strainer fit inside the bottle at the top, lightly clicking into place. You unscrew them to use together, septerately or none at all.

tea tumblers

What I really love about the company behind this tumbler is the small details added to their packaging. Included in the packaging were a beautiful poem and Rumi card inspired by the design. Also, I can’t help but love the message “listen to your soul” . I like that the company decided on a beautiful statement to live by rather than canvasing the tumbler with branding.

Even though this tea tumbler is entirely double-walled borosilicate glass (aside from the bamboo lid), it does come with soft sleeve for additional protection when on the go. If you’re looking for a tea tumbler with minimal amount of plastic used, this may be the one for you! Makes a great gift for a tea lover, too since it comes gift ready!

Capacity: 15 ounces Price: $30.97

UEndure Glass Tea Infuser Travel Mug

Like the tea tumbler above, this one from UEndure also appears to now come with a soft travel sleeve for additional protection when on the go. It didn’t come with one when I first got it, so it might be a newer feature! Like some other tumblers, you can use this one similar to an hourglass. How? When using the infuser basket on the bottom, you flip it over to steep. Then you remove, seal and flip back over to drink from the top. However, the infuser basket can actually attach to the top lid too if you prefer it there instead. Of course, you can also choose to just let the leaves steep and drink as you go.

tea tumblers

This glass bottle is BPA and lead free, the top and bottom lids are stainless steel. This is another great tea tumbler if you’re looking for one with little to no plastic involved.

Capacity: 14 ounces Price: $24.99

Full Circle Tea Time Glass Bottle

tea tumblers

I initially loved this tea tumbler because of the sleek and smart design. However, to be honest, this one did take some time for me to learn how to properly use. Simply because what makes this tea tumbler different from others is that you don’t remove the top to drink. Instead the top portion of this bottle locks and unlocks to drink right from it. The special twist-to-lock lid was created to minimize spills. Of course, you can decide to remove and drink from the bottle, not the lid, if you want.

This tea tumbler is BPA free. The removable infuser at the bottom is made with plastic and the bottle is made with borosilicate glass. I also appreciate the insulating cork sleeve that protects hands from heat.

Capacity: 19 ounces Price: $24.99

David’s Tea Travel Mug

tea tumblers

If you’re looking for a tea tumbler and your top priority is the tea to stay hot for as long as possible, then I highly recommend this one from David’s Tea. I have made tea to go for a 6 hour ride and arrived at my destination with piping hot tea still! It is double-walled, so you don’t have to worry about it being too hot to hold. I think that’s the best feature from this tea tumbler. However, I do also love the hidden compartment for you to store some loose leaf tea you’ll want to steep at a later time. It’s located right under the lid (shhhh!).

This tea tumbler is not made with glass. It does have a removable fine mesh infuser, and also a strainer if you wanted to just steep your leaves directly in the tea tumbler and drink.

Capacity: 16 ounces Price: $34.00

Thanks for sharing these great options. I may be in the market for an upgrade so these are all great options. Thanks for a great post with some great options!!!

You’re welcome, Beth! I hope you find one you’ll love for those on the go tea moments 😊

I have mentionned TeaseTea in the past and I love my TeaseTea portable for my favorite tea – hot or cold.

Hi there I am the owner of UEndure Tea Company and would love to send you a free travel sleeve. Just reach out and let me know where I can send it. Thanks for adding our bottle to your article!

I am looking for a glass bottle with zero plastic and I wasn’t clear which of these was made like that. I wonder if you could reply and let me know. I can always taste plastic or metal in my tea. I did finally find an electric kettle that was all metal inside: Precise Heat Electric Water Kettle, 1.5 L. Although checking on Amazon that one is no longer available now. Oh dear.

Hi Annette, the lotus glass tea tumbler by Sacred Lotus Love is probably the best option on this list for that. The bottle is entirely glass – no plastic inside with the tea – however the lid does have a plastic seal so that it is leak proof.

Lu Ann, I’d love for you to try out a Mosi Tea Infuser 🙂 Please email me and I’ll send you one!

Hello, I was wondering if you would recommend which tumbler has the securest top that will not leak if you throw it into your bag? Thank you!

Tea to go. Enjoy great tea anywhere, whether you're an overnighter, away for the week, at work for the day, or on a picnic. Here are some of the best ways to travel with tea.

tea outside. teapot and tea cups in wooden tray outdoors

Do you dread not having your favorite loose-leaf tea when you're away from home? There's nothing more comforting than a cup of tea, especially when it's your favorite.

Tea drinkers who want to take their tea with them can easily do so with a few insights and the right gear. You can take your tea to the park with friends or use a portable tea infuser for taking a cold-brewed oolong on a hike or bike ride.

I will show you some of the best ways to travel with tea by taking your teaware and tea to go. There are many creative ways to take your favorite tea with you!

Here's what you'll need for tea in the park, at the beach, on a hike, or any place you may picnic.

  • A thermos of hot water
  • A sturdy teapot or gaiwan
  • A padded carrier to prevent breakage
  • Select a nice quiet spot and enjoy

If you need some travel teaware items, check these out:

Best Tea Infuser Mugs

tea to Go Tea Forte floral infuser mug

I've used this tea infuser mug I bought from Tea Forte for years. It has a stainless steel infusing basket that sits inside and a lid that keeps the tea warm. The inverted top can then set the basket on to catch any drippings after the tea is finished steeping.

You can bring your favorite tea leaves to work and keep them stored in an airtight tin and use the hot water from the office coffee machine for steeping.

Another tea infuser travel mug I love is this steeping mug and infuser from The Tea Spot simply because of the beautiful design and generous size. It even has a steeping guide printed on the back. The mug is double-walled ceramic allowing for excellent insulation. I bought this tea travel mug set for my daughter, who takes it everywhere!

Best Electric Tea Kettle

best travel mug for loose leaf tea

The other option is to bring an electric kettle if you're going to be in one place for a while, such as an office. I like the Bonavita  or the Cuisinart model because they have variable temperatures and elegant designs. Bonavita does make less expensive models that you wouldn't mind leaving at work.

Best Travel Tea Tumbler

A quality traveler tea infuser tumbler is a must-have when you're taking tea to go. Most are well-insulated, making them perfect for hot or iced tea.

What to look for in a good tea infuser tumbler:

  • Double-walled stainless steel to keep hot or cold for hours.
  • A good seal that does not leak.
  • A screw-on lid to survive accidental dropping or tossing in backpacks.
  • A large stainless steel removable infuser.
  • Easy to take apart and clean.

My daughter bought me a travel tea tumbler from Teavana, which has a built-in stainless steel infuser…it is the best thing ever. I bring this whenever I travel. I can even store tea inside the tumbler in a sealed bag while it's not being used. I highly recommend investing in a quality tea tumbler if you don't have one already. This tea thermos keeps my tea piping hot for hours.

The Tea Spot Mountain Tea Tumbler

Best Travel with Tea Tumbler

Now that Teavana is no longer, I looked for a replacement tea tumbler to recommend to my readers. As you know, I love The Tea Spot , and I came across their Mountain Tea Tumbler from their Steepware collection, which I love. It checks off all of my must-haves for a great tea tumbler.

This tumbler won the 2018 World Tea Award for the best tea brewing device - (non-electric).

The stainless steel basket infuser is larger than the Teavana one, so it's perfect for infusing larger whole-leaf teas. Another plus to the infusing basket is that it's large enough to add fruit pieces to flavor your tea or simply flavor water for a cold refreshing drink.

Free Shipping on Orders over $60

I much prefer the stainless steel-lined tumblers and the stainless steel infuser baskets. They're more durable and easier to keep clean. I'm not a fan of the plastic infuser baskets. They're harder to clean and stain too easily.

Food-grade stainless steel, glass, and porcelain are my first choices for any food or beverage because they are chemically inert. There's no need to worry about harmful chemicals leaching into your drink.

Best Glass Tea Tumbler

best travel mug for loose leaf tea

The urban glass tumbler from The Tea Spot is another of my favorites. I tend to use this for my cold-brew tea. I like the glass so I can see the cold tea infusions. The generous-sized stainless steel basket effortlessly infuses my favorite oolongs.

You can also use it for steeping hot tea since it's constructed of borosilicate glass. The stainless steel lids come off at both ends for easy cleaning. The cork sleeve and strap make this tumbler easy to hold and carry. The design is stylish and fits my car cup holders or bike beverage holders.

Best Travel Tea Set for Gong Fu Brewing

Taking a teapot, cups, and leaves can be a hassle when you're on the go, especially if you like to brew your tea gong fu style.

Generally, gong fu brewing uses more tea leaves than water, with considerably short brewing times. The process is repeated to extract the varying flavors released from the same tea leaves.

This is a style of brewing that uses a small teapot of some sort. It could be a Gaiwan (guy wan), Yixing (ee shing) teapot, or small porcelain teapot.

A Gaiwan is usually made from porcelain, while a Yixing is unglazed and made from red or purple clay. This is purposeful. The clay absorbs the tea flavor over time and continues adding to the brewed tea's complexity. This is why dedicating Yixing to one type of tea is recommended.

OhMy Travel Gongfu tea set

OMyTea sells this delightful portable porcelain gong fu style tea brewing set all wrapped together in a convenient travel pouch. I highly recommend this tea set if you must have your tea gong fu style while traveling. How cute is this set??

Best Tea Filter Bags

I don't mind the hassle of bringing my tea, but I want to keep things simple. Bringing bagged tea is the simplest solution; if you choose that route, you have a few options.

  • Buy a good quality bagged tea. I recommend several online retailers that carry quality bagged tea.
  • Buying quality loose-leaf tea packed in sachets and placing them in a travel tin is the easiest way to make tea on the road.
  • Usually, I will bring a good quality full-leaf tea in a pyramid bag from Adagio or The Tea Spot and brew my tea with whatever hot water is available from the hotel or café.
  • You can also make your own bagged tea from your favorite loose-leaf tea.

best travel mug for loose leaf tea

If you want to make your tea sachets, the best ones I've found are made by Bstean tea filter bags. I like these because they are large and easily hold a healthy teaspoon of loose-leaf tea with room for the leaves to expand.

They come in two sizes and are made of unbleached natural paper, so there's no funny taste in your tea. The drawstring design is better than the fold-over flap style. I recommend buying the larger size for loose-leaf teas.

Best Travel Tea Sets

Zens Lifestyle makes clean, straightforward design teaware. Many of their products have won design awards. Their portable teaware is excellent to use on short trips. They have two different sizes. The smaller one is for individuals, and the larger set is for two people.

best travel mug for loose leaf tea

The Mobile Moon Tea Set is designed for traveling with a companion tea drinker. It makes an excellent little carrier for picnics. The teapot is made of borosilicate glass with two double-walled glass cups and a traveling case.

Zens's other product is a portable borosilicate glass travel tea set and tea infuser all in one. It comes with a 7.7-ounce teapot, a stainless steel infuser, and a double-walled cup packaged in a trendy little tote bag.

Zens Lifestyle makes beautiful products if you're looking for a stylish product for tea on the go. It's so easy to use the Zens Lifestyle portable travel tea set. The travel set allows you to infuse your tea in the upper chamber and, with a button, release the brewed tea through a stainless steel screen into the lower chamber glass cup.

Best Hot Water Thermos

best travel mug for loose leaf tea

Don't forget the hot water! THERMOS makes a large-capacity tumbler stainless steel vacuum insulated to keep liquids hot for 24 hours. The stainless steel exterior remains cool to the touch with hot drinks. The king-size holds 68 ounces - enough to keep you brewing tea all day!

Best Practices When Traveling with Loose Leaf Tea

  • Only pack easygoing and simple-to-steep teas, like black teas or robust oolongs that can take boiling water.
  • Choose pre-packaged or pre-fill your sachets with premium loose tea.
  • Pack teas that use boiling point water since the hottest water available in hotels and cafés are boiling point temperature.
  • Think twice before bringing teas requiring lower temperatures or pack a thermometer.
  • Or leave the more delicate teas at home.
  • Learn to live with premade teas on the go. (I know, know).

Can You Bring Tea on a Plane?

  • In general, yes, don't worry.
  • I've never had any problems with tea sachets in bags placed in my carry-on.
  • You shouldn't have problems with dried food products as long as they are in sealed packaging.
  • Customs officials don't care unless the declared goods' stated value is exceptionally high or it's an agricultural product. Dried and processed tea is an agricultural product. However, it's not a live agricultural product.
  • To be safe, I would perhaps store the tea in a tea canister or bag instead of loosely in a ziplock sandwich bag, making it look like something else entirely. Until you smell it, of course!
  • International travelers are permitted to bring without restriction any quantity of products composed solely of   tea leaves ( Camellia sinensis:  includes black tea, green tea, oolong, dark tea, white tea, and yellow tea). As with all agricultural products, you must declare the product at entry. Source

Forgo Tea to Go

Maybe you couldn't be bothered and have decided to just take your chances and not travel with tea. Truthfully, if you're traveling to a tea-drinking country, chances are you may find some excellent teas to try. Explore and drink whatever tea is available where you're going.

I have a friend who travels from England to the United States and always brings her tea. It's in the form of tea bags, which most Brits drink. But it is still so much better than the majority of black-bagged grocery store tea available here in the states.

On the flip side, when we traveled to Italy, I knew the chances of getting good tea were pretty slim. I was very excited when we came upon a specialty tea café in the Piazza Navona in Rome, but unfortunately, it was closed for renovations. As was the Trevi Fountain, an omen telling me I must return.

Instead, I discovered some excellent espresso, cappuccino, and red wine. My point is that a short time without your favorite tea won't hurt and may open a world of new beverage discoveries.

“Best Tea Tumbler”

Saw the ad for Firebelly and took a chance and I’m glad I switched to this tea tumbler over the metal basket versions. Great design, great product, and I’m drinking more tea.

“Had My Doubts But...”

I am really enjoying my travel tea maker. I’ve made tea and transferred to a thermos or various drink containers and always burn or spill my tea. The container lip and splash guard actually works.. Plunger works beautifully... I love the feel and it hasn’t leaked. Try it – I love it!

“Outstanding”

Absolutely outstanding in every way. Holds heat for 12 hours, easy to open and easy to clean. Wholly recommend.

“Great Tea Travel Mug”

I have tried many travel mugs, most of which have been disappointing for tea even if they work for coffee. I was skeptical of this mug but decided to give it a try – and I’m so glad I did. It is well built, feels great in the hand and to drink from, and seals perfectly. I have been enjoying using it every day.

ASK US ANYTHING

WHAT MATERIALS IS THE TRAVEL MUG MADE WITH?

It's critical that we use the very best materials, and that's what we did. The mug itself is made of medical-grade stainless steel, and the colors are powder coated to feel great in the hand, look fantastic, and last a long time. The press is made of a material called Eastman Tritan. This material is rigorously tested for safety and durability, even in contact with boiling water. It does not contain BPA.

HOW DOES THE TRAVEL MUG STOP TEA INFUSION?

The press inside our mug works very similarly to a French press, with some innovative upgrades.

When you push the press firmly all the way down, the leaves are trapped at the bottom of the mug. The tiny perforations on the bottom of the press prevent particles from escaping, and the flexible seal further prevents continued infusion.

HOW DOES THE SPLASH-PROOF FLOW CONTROL WORK?

This is a special feature, and just one of the ways we went above and beyond to make your experience better.

When designing the press, we included valves along the top. These valves are carefully sized and placed to limit the flow of liquid when the mug is tilted. That means that even drinking from the mug while in motion or tilting it for those last few sips, you get a smooth, controled flow. No water on your nose, no splashes down your shirt.

IS THIS TRAVEL MUG ACTUALLY LEAKPROOF?

Short answer: YES. Now only did we test this rigorously during development, but our customers have, too. We can confidently say that as long as you screw the lid on fully, your travel mug Will. Not. Leak. Throw it in your tote bag. Toss it in your backpack. Your laptop, passport, or anything else you're carrying will be safe and dry.

HOW LONG WILL TEA STAY HOT OR COLD?

You can expect your tea to stay hot or cold for over 12 hours. We constructed the Firebelly travel mug with double-wall vacuum insulation to make sure of it, and a quick scroll through the reviews will tell you it worked. We've even tested it against a leading competitor known for temperature maintenance, and the Firebelly travel mug maintained a higher temperature for longer every time.

HOW DO I MAKE LOOSE LEAF TEA?

First, add your tea leaves to the mug. We normally recommend about 1 tbsp. Next, add your warm water to the appropriate fill line – that's the top line for hot tea or the bottom line for iced tea. When the press is in an "up" position, the leaves can freely open and infuse in the warm water. When you push the press firmly all the way down, the leaves are trapped at the bottom of the mug, and infusion stops. There's no need to remove the leaves before you enjoy your tea, so no reason to make a mess while you're out. You can even put the lid on without fully pressing down the press so that you can steep on the go, and stop the infusion wherever, whenever.

HOW DO I MAKE ICED TEA?

It's a snap (that's a cold pun – we couldn't resist). First, add your tea leaves to the mug. We recommend using around double the normal amount of leaves you would use for hot tea. Use about 2 tbsp, or to your taste. Next, add your warm water to the bottom fill line inside the mug. Now, unscrew the lid on the press and add ice to the chamber. Put the lid back on. When you're ready to stop steeping, push the press firmly all the way down, trapping the leaves at the bottom of the mug and stopping infusion.

WHAT'S YOUR RETURN POLICY?

You'll enjoy a 30-day free returns period, so you can place your order with confidence. Just get in touch with our support team via email to start a return.

When evaluating the best mugs to buy, we consulted our analysts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, who regularly test all types of coffee and tea gear and have compiled comprehensive guides to heated mugs , travel mugs and coffee thermoses , to name a few.

We considered how comfortable they were to hold, how much coffee they could hold (and keep hot), durability, dishwasher safety and nitty-gritty details like the lip shape, handle design and weight. Here, we're recommending mugs that our editors and analysts use daily, plus a few extra picks that stood out for specific features, like stackability or a value price.

The heavy feel and slim handle of this luxurious mug make it equal parts sturdy and sleek, and it's our absolute go-to for afternoon coffee (with a splash of steamed 2% milk) in the Test Kitchen.

It's also a favorite of Nicole Papantoniou , director of the Good Housekeeping Institute 's Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab. The 14-ounce stoneware mug with thick walls comes in a rainbow of colors, many of which feature a stunning ombré effect, so you can pick one that suits your personality.

Le Creuset is a brand known for its stellar quality and excellent heat retention and distribution. (The brand also makes our favorite Dutch oven .) At $20 per mug (at the time of publication), you can enjoy a piece of serious craftsmanship with your everyday cup of coffee or tea. The brand claims to be break-resistant and dishwasher-safe.

We love that this set of four, 16-ounce mugs is stackable, which is great for storing a whole set in a smaller space. The small indent at the bottom allows them to be stored on top of one another. The set of four is a great value for porcelain mugs.

If you consider your coffee or teatime to be your moment of zen, then you'll love the muted, natural colorway — though some reviewers wished they came in more than three colors. The extra-wide handle should be easy to hold too. According to the brand, these mugs are dishwasher and microwave-safe.

They have hundreds of five-star reviews, with users noting that they are sturdy, good quality and look great.

Papantoniou loves that the lid on this stainless steel, travel-friendly mug is easy to use and clean, and it helps keep stains invisible .

"I like the soft grippy handle and material of the outside. It's not entirely spill-proof, but it helps prevent splatter and leaks when you’re on the go," she says. The insulated mug (which keeps coffee hot for up to six hours, per the brand) comes in 6-, 12- and 24-ounce capacities and unique colors like "snapper" and "bark." One reviewer noted that it's perfect for enjoying your beverage outside, as the lid helps keep bugs and dirt away.

Insulated mugs work particularly well for iced drinks — Papantoniou uses this one at home for iced espressos — as they help prevent the ice from melting. And with minimal melting, your first sip will be just as strong and smooth as your last. It doesn't fit in a car cupholder, so Papantoniou purchased this genius cup holder adaptor to pair with her Hydro Flask. "Best investment I ever made," she said.

These beautifully designed, 15-ounce earthenware mugs come in a set of two, which can be tricky to find. Handmade from locally sourced clay in Mexico, they make a luxurious gift that you can feel good about: T h ey're hand-cast, fired and glazed by a group of artisans with a process guaranteed by the World Fair Trade Organization .

Short, wide mugs will cool liquids down more quickly, as there is more room for steam to escape, which is why we like that these are tall and slim. They're ideal for keeping liquids hot, and they're easy to slip into a cabinet. We also love the unique, curved handle. They are microwave-safe, but hand washing is recommended.

While certain materials, like stoneware, can help keep your beverage hot for longer, they won't work quite as well as an electronically heated mug. Ember products have sensors throughout the mug that monitor the temperature of the liquid inside, and then turn on built-in heaters if the temperature drops.

In her Ember mug review , GH Institute deputy editor Sarah Wharton found this mug easy to use with a useful app that was simple to set up. In her Lab tests, she found that this mug held the set temperature for nearly its entire battery life (80 minutes) and it was comfortable to hold. While impressed overall, she did note that the mug is not dishwasher safe and will change the flavor of your coffee the longer it sits.

Choose from 10 muted or bright colors to find your new everyday cup. The solid colorways can hold up to 16 ounces, while the striped mugs hold 12 ounces. The simple design and value price make these a winning choice for upgrading your current everyday set.

The brand claims that the handle doesn't get hot, even when you microwave it, and it features a curved bottom that sits nicely in your hands. Enthusiastic reviewers say it can hold plenty of coffee (with room for milk) and that it brings joy to their morning. One reviewer even wished for clear cabinets to better display their Leeway mugs. Just note that the mugs only come in a set of four, so if you break one you can't replace it with a single mug.

But they're made of stoneware, which is one of the most durable types of ceramic, and we love that they're safe to put in the dishwasher — as any good everyday mug should be.

One of our editors uses this mug every morning at home. Its relatively p etite in size at 9 ounces which is perfect for a typical 6-ounce cup of coffee, especially if your coffee tends to get cold before you can finish it.

We love the way you can watch your cream swirl into the coffee through the clear glass mug, and it makes it easier to monitor the color to gauge how much cream is needed. The handle is small, but our editor says it comfortably fits her index finger, which is all she needs to hold this lightweight mug, though may not be suitable for people with larger hands.

According to the brand, it's microwave- and dishwasher-safe, but hand washing is recommended to preserve the label.

While this 10-ounce, stoneware mug made in England isn't cheap, reviewers rave about the quality. Its design is inspired by Arabesque, a 1960s bold folk style pattern that gives it a charming, vintage feel .

The glaze is designed to prevent chipping and enhance durability. "This mug fits really nicely in my hands with the finger rests at the top and bottom of the handle," says Associate Food Editor Becca Miller . "It's really beautiful and delicate, but also sturdy. I've had a set for almost a decade and none of them have ever chipped." They're dishwasher-, microwave-, oven- and freezer-safe, according to the brand.

Looking for a great gift for coffee lovers ? Let a friend or family member show off their school pride: "I bought my parents these college spirit mugs. They stack (huge storage win) and have a bunch of cute decals that are unique to each school," says Deputy Food Editor Trish Clasen Marsanico .

According to the brand, these ceramic mugs are safe to clean in the top rack of the dishwasher and hold 12 ounces of liquid. Reviewers also noted that they had a nice weight to them and could hold a lot of coffee. They are available in eight different school motifs, but we wish they had more.

Rae Dunn is popular for a reason: Its dishware offers cute sayings and phrases that can perk up your mood in the morning and look great on open shelves or in clear cabinets.

"When I had roommates in college, I'd race to get up in the morning to snag this sturdy cup that holds two full cups of coffee," says Miller. This line of dishwasher- and microwave-safe ceramic mugs is inspired by Disney characters, which is great for kids and nostalgic adults alike, but the brand comes in dozens of different collections.

At 16 ounces, this mug is definitely on the larger side, which is perfect if you enjoy a supersized cup. While the uneven lip gives it a handmade look, it might not be the most comfortable lip to drink from.

Alaya The Morning Mug

The Morning Mug

Made in a pottery studio based in south India, this mug holds two cups of coffee (or 16-ounces) , has a nice weight and warms your hands as you hold it, according to reviewers.

According to the brand, the pottery studio where the mug is made works to bring jobs to rural communities in India, training 100 potters and craftspeople. Alaya also uses repurposed shipping containers and batch kilns to reduce fuel consumption, and the brand plants thousands of trees to help regenerate the soil and the local ecosystem.

The brand notes that there will be natural imperfections from cup to cup, as they are handmade. They are made of stoneware and are hand-wash only.

Starbucks Been There Mug

Been There Mug

GH Institute Nutrition Lab Director Stefani Sassos loves these c ollectible mugs from Starbucks that feature charming sketches of cities and states : "Whenever I travel, I get one for my parents. We now have a collection of them from around the world and we reminisce on the travels! It’s a great gift and become a tradition in our family," she says.

The high-quality, sturdy ceramic mugs hold 14 ounces of liquid and weigh in at just over a pound, which some reviewers found too heavy. They are wider than they are tall, so they'd be great for eating soups or ice cream, too. They are microwave- and dishwasher-safe, according to the brand.

Yeti 24-Ounce Rambler

24-Ounce Rambler

If you like to drink a lot of coffee or tea at once and don't want to invest in a heated mug, this stainless steel, large-format insulated mug is your best bet.

The double-walled, vacuum-insulated cup can hold 24 ounces of liquid (it also comes in 10-ounce and 14-ounce sizes) and will keep your hot drinks hot and your cold drinks cold. Perfect for taking on the go, it has a wide handle that's easy to grip, and the brand says it's puncture and rust-resistant with a splash-resistant lid. Every part of the mug is dishwasher-safe.

GH Food Producer Tina Martinez prefers sipping from the smaller size at home: "It keeps my coffee hot for hours . Perfect for enjoying a slow, leisurely cup on the weekends," she says.

Ozeri Moderna Artisan Series Double Wall Barista Coffee Glass

Moderna Artisan Series Double Wall Barista Coffee Glass

These double-walled, 15-ounce glass mugs were a winner in GH's annual Kitchen Gear Awards , standing out for great heat retention (and for keeping drinks cold too). We also love the built-in recipes on the side of the glass . Whip up cappuccinos, lattes and an assortment of other drinks without having to memorize ratios or rely on your phone.

Plus, the double-walled design will prevent beverages inside from affecting the outside temperature of the glass, making these comfortable to hold. In our Lab, testers found that the measurements on the side of the cup were easy to read and the cup was easy to clean.

Available as a single cup or in a set of two, these make an excellent gift for espresso aficionados or beginners looking to improve their at-home barista game. It's microwave- and freezer-safe, but hand washing is recommended.

MacKenzie-Childs Coco Davez Artist Mug

Coco Davez Artist Mug

MacKenzie-Childs is known for its whimsical decor and ceramics, and the brand recently released a collection of 16-ounce, ceramic mugs celebrating various artists.

"I’ve been using the Coco Davez Artist Mug just about every morning, and it’s been such a treat," says GH's Senior Home Editor Monique Valeris . "It washes up well — there’s not one stain on the mug’s interior yet — it's safe to use in the dishwasher and microwave and the lively print is the perfect pick-me-up. "

While it’s one of the priciest picks on this list, a portion of the sales from every mug is directed to a charity the artist supports as well as the MacKenzie-Childs Hands on Scholarship for Design.

How we picked the best coffee mugs

line break

In addition to collecting recommendations from our staff and surveying cooking and product experts, we evaluated each mug based on our previous testing experience with food and beverage-related products, like dinnerware , outdoor dinnerware , glassware , travel mugs , heated mugs and more.

From that experience, we know which brands are reliable, what materials to look for, and what features make one mug stand out from another. We regularly attend industry trade shows to learn about new trends and work closely with brands to stay up-to-date on the best technology.

What to look for in a coffee mug

line break

There are a few key specifications to consider when finding the best mug for your mornings:

✔️ Size: Do you drink a few sips of coffee in the morning, or do you prefer to savor a supersized cup? Mugs typically range in size from 8 ounces (1 cup of liquid) to 16 ounces (2 cups of liquid), so choose something that fits your capacity preference. While there is no "standard" size, a common just-right size is 12 ounces. Your coffee may get cold before you finish drinking it in larger sizes, and smaller sizes may not hold a satisfying amount of liquid. Consider getting a few different mugs for different drinks; you may want a larger mug for hot cocoa than you would for coffee, for example.

✔️ Handle: A handle that is barely big enough to hook your finger around makes it difficult to hold the mug steady, which can be a problem if there is a piping hot liquid inside. Large handles that start near the top of the mug and end near the bottom are great if you like to hold the mug with the palm of your hand, but often indicate a heavier mug overall. Lighter, smaller mugs will have smaller handles that are great if you prefer holding the mug with just your thumb and index finger. You can also look out for finger rests on the top and/or bottom of the handle.

✔️ Material:

  • Porcelain is a type of ceramic with a glazed, nonporous surface that is generally dishwasher- and microwave-safe. It is often pricier than stoneware but less expensive than bone china, making it great for both daily use and more formal occasions.
  • Stoneware is another type of ceramic and tends to be less expensive, but heavier and thicker, compared to porcelain. It's durable and great for daily use.
  • Earthenware , the third main type of ceramic, is one of the oldest forms of pottery. It is a rustic, porous material that must be glazed to help prevent the absorption of liquid. Earthenware pieces often have a one-of-a-kind, handmade look, though they are more delicate than porcelain and stoneware.
  • Ceramic : Some brands don't specify what type of ceramic they use for their mugs, but know that all ceramic is designed to be hard, heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant for everyday use.
  • Stainless steel is the most break- and chip-resistant material. It also excels at heat retention and often comes with a lid, which is great for travel.
  • Glass offers a nice aesthetic and can be useful if you like to see the color of your coffee. It is not as good at heat retention as ceramic or stainless steel and the outside of the glass will get hot when a hot liquid is poured in. If you like the look of glass but want something with more heat retention, consider double-walled glass, which stays cool to the touch and keeps the liquid inside warmer for longer.

What is the best mug to keep liquids hot?

line break

If heat retention is your number one priority, then an electronically heated mug is your best bet . For a more cost-effective option, consider stainless steel, followed by thick and durable stoneware or double-walled glass.

I’m a Registered Dietitian, and These Are the 8 Best Green Teas You Can Buy

' src=

For centuries, green tea has been revered for both its delicate flavor and its profound impact on health and wellness. Originating in China thousands of years ago, green tea has since spread its influence across the globe, becoming a beloved staple in countless cultures. Today, its popularity continues to soar as more people discover the multitude of benefits packed into each soothing sip, spanning everything from heart health and digestion to immunity and even mood support.

But with all the green teas available, it can be overwhelming to make a purchasing decision. As a registered dietitian and outspoken tea lover, I’m here to help! Be it bagged or loose, classic leaves or ground matcha, decaf or ultra-caffeinated, I've done my homework. Below are my eight favorite green teas guaranteed to *steep* up your game.

  • Christina Manian, RDN , registered dietitian and freelance writer

Health benefits of green tea

Green tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant . This shrub’s leaves eventually grow to become not only green tea, but black, white, oolong, red, pu-erh, and yellow teas, depending on how they’re harvested and processed.

All camellia teas are rich in plant compounds , otherwise known as phytonutrients, that offer antioxidant benefits—and green tea is no exception. The drink is known to contain bioactive compounds, such as kaempferol, quercetin, catechins, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), as well as the amino acid l-theanine—all of which work to reduce inflammation throughout the body and ward off disease-causing free radical molecules.

Research suggests that regularly drinking green tea may help lower cholesterol levels and decrease the risk of heart disease, thanks to its heart-healthy compounds like flavonoids and polyphenols. It's also beloved for its brain-boosting benefits, thanks to its modest dose of caffeine (somewhere between 30 and 50 milligrams per eight ounces, which is about half the amount in a cup of coffee.) Green tea’s caffeine content promotes alertness, focus, and stamina without the dreaded crash associated with coffee.

How to choose the best green tea

Before getting into specific brands, there are a few things to look for when perusing the tea aisle—namely certification seals. Certifications show that the tea brand has voluntarily undergone third-party verification for specific standards, illustrating their dedication to purity, quality, and other initiatives. Here are the top certification seals I look for on tea packaging:

Fair Trade: The Fair Trade Certified seal shows that the brand is committed to improved worker conditions, fair compensation, and environmental protections through rigorous standards.

Organic: USDA Certified Organic is always a bonus when shopping for tea as it guarantees that the product was made without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals. Regenerative Organic Certified is even better as it incorporates all the benefits of organic farming with added requirements for animal welfare and labor standards.

B Corporation: A final certification that’s great to see on packaging is the B Corp seal, signaling that the brand is committed to sustainability through social and environmental initiatives.

Outside of these certifications, I also like to check the origin of the tea leaves. With green tea (that isn’t part of a blend), you want to see that the leaves have been harvested from a single region. This typically indicates that the tea is of higher quality,  though there are always exceptions, of course.

8 best green teas, according to an RD

In my opinion, Numi’s Gunpowder Green Tea is the perfect all around green tea. This is because it can be readily found in many grocery stores, is not overly expensive, sports USDA Organic and Fair Trade certification, is bagged for convenient use, and offers true green tea flavor. As a green tea fan, I appreciate a smooth, full-bodied, nutty flavor and Numi certainly offers that with this variety. Plus, it still contains all the health benefits and caffeine you want in a green tea.

  • Organic and Fair Trade certified
  • Bagged for convenience
  • Easy to find in most mainstream retailers
  • Flavor may be too robust for some

Loose-leaf teas are ideal for a cozy day at home with nowhere to be. Because you , the drinker, measure out how much you want in a serving, they can be brewed as strong or as weak as you’d like in both flavor and caffeine content.

Many of the highest-quality teas tend to be loose-leaf, and Full Leaf Tea Company’s Organic Sencha is no exception. Sencha is a variety of traditional Chinese green tea where the leaves are steamed before packaging resulting in a more delicate, yet vibrant floral flavor. This 2-ounce bag contains thirty servings, giving you a month’s worth of tea (if you drink it every day), tastes great, and won’t break the bank—it’s $13 a bag.

  • No tea bags or overwraps yield less waste and a customizable cup
  • Tastes great
  • Requires a tea ball or disposable tea bag to brew
  • Not readily available in most grocery stores

The Republic of Tea is well-known for offering a variety of tea blends that are readily accessible, thanks to placement in grocery stores across the nation. At an affordable price point, its green tea bags are perfect for everyday drinking with a mild, approachable flavor. This forgiving tea is perfect for the new green tea drinker as it can be steeped with boiling water without turning bitter (the most delicate green teas should be steeped with water that hasn’t yet boiled).

  • Conveniently bagged for on-the-go drinking
  • Smooth, light flavor that won’t turn bitter
  • Not organic or Fair Trade certified

No green tea roundup would be complete without a matcha option (or two), and Naoki’s Ceremonial Grade Matcha is more than worth the recognition thanks to its high quality and delicious taste. This is a great beginner’s matcha as it upholds its tasty, vegetal flavor without turning bitter—perfect for lattes, baked goods, and smoothies.

  • Great price for the quality
  • Intentionally sourced from a handful of regions in Japan

With the popularity of matcha has come a handful of creative matcha blends, including MUD/WTR’s Matcha. This matcha is a little more reminiscent of chai in flavor than matcha thanks to the black pepper, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom it contains. It also features adaptogenic mushrooms, like reishi, lion’s mane, chaga, and cordyceps. These nutrient-dense additions pack a serious antioxidant punch, increasing the healthfulness of your matcha while offering longer-lasting energy.

  • USDA organic
  • Blended with superfoods for additional benefits
  • Unique flavor that’s perfect for switching up your routine

Odds are that you’ve seen (or already have) a variety or two of Bigelow’s teas. This is thanks to its wide availability nationwide, trusted quality, and affordable price point. Its green tea meets all these criteria and offers a delicate, earthy taste. And while Bigelow doesn’t sport organic or Fair Trade seals, it is a certified B corporation—a great bonus.

  • Certified B Corp

If you’re a tea connoisseur like myself, then you might know about tea pearls. These hand-rolled pearls unfurl into a beautiful floral display in your mug as they steep, sure to impress company when you have a high tea. But this tea is not only for display—it imparts the most lovely subtle jasmine flavor and aroma, too!

  • Organic and Fair Trade-certified

best travel mug for loose leaf tea

While many drink green tea for a crash-free energy boost, others want all the health benefits without the caffeine (and can even be drank for sleep ). This is where a tasty decaf variety, like Stash’s Premium Green Decaf Tea, can fit perfectly. This mild, nutty tea brews to a beautiful golden color and offers all the impressive benefits of green tea. Best part is, each bag contains less than 2 mg of caffeine per cup (yes, even decaffeinated drinks still contain traces of caffeine—just a lot less than their caffeinated counterparts.)

  • Decaffeinated
  • Bagged with an overwrap that produces more waste than loose leaf tea or other bagged versions

How do you brew green tea?

Brewing green tea is pretty easy, but it depends on a few factors, especially whether or not you're brewing loose leaf or bagged tea. You can read exactly how to brew the perfect batch here .

Can you drink green tea every day?

Sure can, but just do it in moderation. While green tea is generally safe for most people, consuming excessive amounts can lead to potential side effects due to its caffeine content and other compounds. It's generally recommended to limit green tea intake to around 2-3 cups per day for most adults. However, individual tolerance may vary, so it's essential to listen to your body (and your doctors!) and adjust accordingly.
