Al Ahsa, the world’s largest oasis, and its major city, Hofuf, add significantly to Saudi tourism with numerous things to do and tourist places to visit. Hofuf is around 150km from Dammam and almost in the center of the Eastern Province.

Ibrahim Palace

While visiting Al Ahsa, tourists love to visit the 500 years old Ibrahim Palace and its related museum constructed by an Ottoman Governor. The center of this palace was built in 963 Hijri, which is Al Qubba Mosque.

King Abdulaziz al-Saud رحمة الله عليه entered the castle to announce the annexation of Al Ahsa in 1331 Hijri.

Judas Cave or Jabal Qarah

Jabal Qarah , also known as Judas Caves or Hofuf Caves, is the best tourist place to visit in Al Ahsa. This was originally an island, but over the centuries, the wind and water waves played with the clay, giving it a look you may see today.  

Outside Judas caves, the climate is very hot, but as you enter them, you will surely be cooled by the effect.

Jawatha Masjid

Jawatha Masjid was first built in 628 A.D. and is the first mosque of Islam in the Eastern province. It is said that the first Juma Prayer outside Madina was prayed here; therefore, people love visiting this place in Al Ahsa.

Khuzam Palace

Khuzam Palace was built in 1793 A.D. at the place where Bedouins previously came in the summer season to exchange goods available in Al-Ahsa with the goods they brought from the desert. As a result, the castle was built on the main road that acted as the gateway to Al-Ahsa from the western side.

Hofuf (الهفوف al-Hofuf ) is a city in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia . The city is located within the oasis of al-Ahsa (or al-Hasa ), and the names are often used interchangeably. In 2018 this oasis was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List .

Hofuf is around 3 h from Riyadh and 1.5h from Dammam by train. Saudi Railway Organisation [dead link] runs four trains per day in each direction.

Get around [ edit ]

Taxi service is available in downtown Hofuf, at SAPTCO bus station and at train station. Hard to find on road (Saudi Riyal 10 -20 per trip to get around in the city).

Many car rental services are also available. You need your ID and driving license (Saudi Riyals 70 to 200 per day per 200 km).

Southeast Asians provide an on-call cab service (this is usually through a personal contact that you can call later). These cabbies can take you within the city and to anywhere in the Gulf region.

• Al-Oqair Beach . One of the oldest beaches in eastern coasts of the country which opened India to Muslims in 712 AD and where a treaty was signed by Saudi King and British Government after First World War. The history goes back to 300 BC. ( updated Nov 2019 )

Only shawarma, snacks and beverages are available in small shops nearby the cave. Since moving around takes at least 4-5 hours to enjoy the location, you will derive more enjoyment if you can carry own food, especially if you are a vegetarian.

Check out Alsaid Coffee for some pricy but authentic coffee house atmosphere in the Souq. Great place to chat especially in late hours when people are going out again.

Ras Al Khaimah wants tourists to get around to its attractions in flying taxis

Located next to the Sultanate of Oman and Dubai, the small emirate of Ras Al Khaimah plans to offer an electric air taxi service from 2027 to take tourists to its main tourist attractions, such as Jebel Jais, the highest peak in the United Arab Emirates.

Wadi Bih, the largest canyon in the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Queen of Sheba's Palace, Dhayah Fort are some of the must-see sights in a small emirate that is increasingly making a name for itself, giving some competition to its more famous neighbors Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Ras Al Khaimah's investment in tourism is likely to get even more attention as the small emirate has unveiled a plan to transport visitors to tourist sites in electric flying taxis.

Ras Al Khaimah's tourism development and transport authorities have signed a partnership agreement with Skyports Infrastructure, a company that designs and operates vertiports for electric air taxis, in collaboration with manufacturers of electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOL). The aim is to provide "fast and convenient zero-emission transport" to the island of Al Marjan and Jebel Jais, the highest peak in the United Arab Emirates. Service is set to start in 2027. One big advantage, of course, is shorter travel times. Between the island of Al Marjan and Jebel Jais, the journey takes at least 1 hour 10 minutes by car, whereas with an electric air taxi, the journey will take just 20 minutes. But time saving is not the only reason for this project.

Still relatively under the radar as a tourist destination, Ras Al Khaimah is actively working to change that and become a key stopping point in the United Arab Emirates, with the goal of welcoming 3.5 million visitors by 2030. And to set itself apart from its more famous neighbors, as well as from the large-scaleprojectsSaudi Arabia has in the works, the small emirate wedged wants to demonstrate that building up more tourist activity is not incompatible with responsible environmental actions, provided that sustainable solutions are thought through.

“This partnership marks a pivotal moment in our efforts to revolutionize transportation in Ras Al Khaimah. By introducing electric air mobility, we're not just connecting tourists to our attractions, we're forging a sustainable path forward for our Emirate. This innovative project aligns perfectly with our commitment to enhancing accessibility while minimizing our environmental impact.... Together, we're shaping a brighter, greener future for Ras Al Khaimah,” explains Esmaeel Hasan Al Blooshi, Director General of the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority.
