Your Guide to the Cycling Grand Tours

January 10, 2024 5 min read

The Grand Tours are known for their infamously hard climbs, breathtaking battles to the top and impressive feats of athleticism. We’re taking a look at the 3 cycling Grand Tours which dominate our cycling calendars over the summer.

Table of Contents:

What are the 3 Cycling Grand Tours?

  • Tour de France

Giro D’Italia

  • Vuelta a España
  • Ride the Grand Tour Stages Virtually with Wattbike

The cycling Grand Tours are the three major European cycling races which take place between May and September each year. All three Grand Tours are three-week races with daily stages for professional cyclists to tackle. The three tours are famous for their gruelling climbs, tests of endurance, and feats of power.

The three Grand Tours are the:

Tour de France

The Tour de France is one of the Grand Tours which is held primarily in France, and takes place during July, annually.

The  Tour de France   was first held in 1903, making it the oldest of the 3 cycling Grand Tours. The race consists of 21 stages, each a day long, and the route of these stages primarily takes place in France. Around 20 teams take place with a number of riders each, and each rider is timed on each day.

Whilst this cycling Grand Tour is a men-only race, there have been many versions of the race for women over the years. The ' Tour de France Femmes '  was held for the first time in 2022, allowing female riders to compete in their own version of the iconic race.

Standout Stages

Iconic climbs of the Tour de France   include the infamous Alpe d’Huez climb. With its seemingly endless hairpin bends in an upwards gruelling challenge, this stage is usually vital in determining the winner of the cycling Grand Tour.

The rider with the lowest accumulative time during  the Tour   is the current leader and wears the famous yellow jersey.

  • There are 4 riders who have won this cycling Grand Tour the most times. Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain have each taken the title 5 times.
  • In 2012, Bradley Wiggins became the first Brit to win this prestigious cycling Grand Tour.
  • Kenyan-British cyclist Chris Froome has won the Tour four times (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017).
  • Welsh Geraint Thomas won the Tour in 2018.

The Giro D’Italia Grand Tour takes place in Italy primarily, and is usually held in May or early June.

The  Giro D’Italia   was first held in 1909 and welcomes cyclists from all over the world. This cycling Grand Tour primarily takes place in Italy, although the route often dips in and out of its neighbouring countries. As with the other cycling Grand Tours, the Giro consists of 21 stages with each stage taking place over a number of days.

There are a number of types of stages that are used in the Giro: the mass-start stages,  individual time trials ,  and team time trials. As with the Tour de France, there are  iconic climbs of the Giro D’Italia   which push the cyclists to their limits, including those through the Alps and Dolomites.

  • 3 riders have the most Giro wins: Eddy Merckx, Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi each have 5 Giro wins to their names.
  • British-Kenyan rider Chris Froome won in 2018 riding for Team Sky.
  • Tao Geoghegan Hart won in 2020, riding for the INEOS Grenadiers.

As with the Tour de France the cyclist with the shortest aggregate time is the leader, and begins the following stage wearing a pink jersey (or la maglia rosa). Within  the Giro ,  there are other competitions taking place - with the ability to win the mountain, points, young rider, or team classifications.

Vuelta a España

The Vuelta a España is the Grand Tour held primarily in Spain, which usually takes place over August and September annually.

La Vuelta a España   was first held in 1935. The Vuelta primarily takes place in Spain, but as with the other cycling Grand Tours, often visits other European countries. The Vuelta welcomes riders from all over the world to compete in two time trials, passage through the mountain chain of the Pyrenees, and cross the finish line in Madrid.

There are multiple mountain stages for each year of the  Spanish Grand Tour ,  which in the past have included:

  • Lagos de Covadonga
  • Les Praeres de Nava
  • La Cobertoria
  • Puerto de San Lorenzo

As with the other cycling Grand Tours, the rider with the lowest time at each stage of the ride will be the leader, donned in the red jersey. Whilst there are also winners of different classifications, which each wear different jerseys: points, mountains, combination, and team classifications.

  • Roberto Heras holds the record of most Vuelta victories, with four.
  • Alberto Contador, Tony Rominger and Primož Roglič have each won three times.
  • British-Kenyan Chris Froome won the general classification in 2011 after Juan José Cobo was found guilty of doping by the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale). Froome also won in 2017, taking the points and combination classification in the same year.
  • In 2018, British cyclist Simon Yates won the Vuelta, also taking the combination classification in the same year.

The Grand Tour: Sand Job — release date, trailer, destinations, interviews and everything we know

The Grand Tour: Sand Job on Prime Video sees Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May head to the Sahara to recreate the legendary Paris-Dakar rally.

The Grand Tour: Sand Job on Prime Video follows the route of the famous Paris/Dakar rally.

The Grand Tour: Sand Job is Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May’s penultimate Grand Tour adventure on Prime Video. In this feature-length special the trio drive 1,000 miles across the Sahara Desert in north west Africa.

They will attempt to recreate the last leg of the iconic Paris-Dakar rally, starting in the little-known former French colony of Mauritania in west Africa and ending in Dakar, on the coast of Senegal. It was known as the most dangerous rally in the world and, to make the challenge even harder, the trio will make the arduous trip in second-hand sports cars they have modified themselves. They face impenetrable mountain terrain, 48C heat, landmines and temperamental cars that look unlikely to make it to the finish line, but they make sure there’s plenty of fun to be had along the way.

“I think we all wondered if it was going to be a little bit too difficult for the cars that we’d chosen,” admits James May. “The Paris-Dakar race was a very gruelling thing. I've never been quite sure why people did it because it must have been really tough and quite risky. The people who did it have a sort of mad hero status.”

Here’s everything you need to know about the former Top Gear team's own version of the rally in Prime Video documentary The Grand Tour: Sand Job …

The Grand Tour: Sand Job.

The Grand Tour: Sand Job release date

The Grand Tour: Sand Job is a feature-length special that launched globally on Prime Video on Friday, February 16, 2024.

Is there a trailer for The Grand Tour: Sand Job?

Yes there's a trailer for The Grand Tour: Sand Job which shows the boys doing what they love best... playing about in cars, in a remote part of the world! Take a look below...

What happens in The Grand Tour: Sand Job

in The Grand Tour: Sand Job , Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are taking second-hand sports cars they have modified themselves on a grueling drive from Mauritania in western Africa to Dakar, Senegal to recreate the final 1,000 miles of the legendary Paris-Dakar rally. They will be driving through a Foreign Office classified danger "red-zone" and facing everything from vertical drops and unreachable borders to landmines and the threat of hideous diseases. They plan to do some camping along the way and try to cram in as much motoring fun as possible.

They'll be camping in dangerous territory.

Interview with Richard Hammond on The Grand Tour: Sand Job

Richard Hammond also presents shows such as Richard Hammond’s Workshop , Richard Hammond’s Crazy Contraptions and The Great Escapists . He presented Total Wipeout and Blast Lab and voiced Nigel in the cartoon Phineas and Ferb .

You like camping, so filming The Grand Tour: Sand Job must have been heaven for you?  Richard Hammond says: "I’m such a boy scout. I'm never happier than when I'm packing my bag and I'm wrapping up my best pen knife and a collapsible stove and a little bag to put things in to keep them dry. I like a sleeping bag and a torch. I love all things to do with camping. Obviously, there are a lot of us to be catered for and we can’t just be let loose into the wild. It’s organised. But there were evenings when it was quieter and things were smaller, and I was in my funny little tent on my car on my own and I'm very, very happy doing that."

Did you also look forward to the challenge of driving across the desert?  Richard says: "I mean, I love an Aston Martin, I love long travel suspension, and I love the way a car can adapt to and absorb terrain. Honestly, I can be moved close to tears if I get into a proper Dakar racer. To feel the way the car is, in almost an animal way, adjusting to the terrain underneath: I find that really powerful and really profound. I love the freedom that it gives you. To look across the landscape and say: I want to go over there really bloody quickly, and I’m going to, thanks to this machine. So yes, I was very excited by this project."

Your car was rather challenging on this journey, wasn’t it? Richard says: "There was the odd issue. It turns out an elderly V12 engine isn’t the best place to start when you want a rugged machine for crossing deserts. A Toyota Landcruiser is where people ordinarily go, not a hand-built, British-engineered luxury GT. I did ask quite a lot of my car. The problem with my car, as you see in the special, is that it came from an era just as the whole idea of computers running the show was taking hold. So, cars were becoming clever but mine hadn't become quite clever enough. It would have been better to have had something earlier or later. Mine was exactly the wrong period when it thought it was clever, but it wasn’t."

What was the issue?  Richard says: "So, the car had a brain, it had sensors all over, and those sensors would occasionally feedback to the brain to say, 'Oh no, there's a problem'. This might be with the exhaust, brakes, the steering, suspension, all manner of things. And the sensors all report back into the brain along these wires. Occasionally, there might be a legitimate problem and the sensors would tell the brain and say, 'You solve the problem', and then the brain would say, 'Okay, we're all fixed we can all go on together'. But my God, occasionally it was the sensors that were the problem. So, the car would be working fine but the sensor would be screaming 'My gearbox is broken!”'and the brain thinks it’s broken so it only gives me one gear to work with, but the gearbox is actually fine. So, it was a massive miscommunication: one big argument going on in the car between all the different parts. As far as the brain was concerned, everything that could go wrong with the car had gone wrong, even though it hadn’t."

What did you do to fix it?  Richard says: "Well I tried screaming at it and saying, 'There’s no problem, shut up', but unfortunately that didn’t work. So ultimately, after driving in one gear, I had to wait until we had Wi-Fi, get a laptop out, and then interrogate the brain. I had to essentially use the computer to say to the car, 'It’s okay. Calm down.' It became neurotic. I think it had too much sun. You set off and think everything’s fine and then the next thing you know it's in a panic about its gearbox again."

You had a problem with overheating too...   Richard says: "Yes. I had fitted underbody protection which was a good idea because we were going through rough terrain and the delicate parts of the car would need protecting from rocks and everything else. What I hadn’t foreseen is that this massive V12 engine, which is normally open underneath, was now covered by a big bash plate which kept hot air in. I was cooking my own engine, basically. It was a constant battle between leaving it open to damage or closing it in and making it overheat."

Did you quite enjoy the challenge, though?  Richard says: "Yeah, look, I’m a guy with some degree of mechanical sympathy, I run a garage and I’m interested in the way cars work. I’m scared of the computer side of things though. It’s like plastering: it’s a dark art. But to plug it into the diagnostics and fix it was quite satisfying. I love problem solving in a physical way. We love taking cars on journeys they weren’t built to do because that’s when they really develop personalities and, boy, did mine ever do that."

Did you mind being left behind by the others when your gears weren’t working?  Richard says: "Well, it wasn’t as bad as Madagascar. There’s always going to be one of us. You can’t possibly know which one it’s going to be, but that’s okay. If you’re doing anything with mates and you’re the one having the more 'exciting' time, shall we say, that’s alright."

Tell us about the visit to the Ambassador’s house...  Richard says: "It was fabulous! I want to go back. It’s one of my favourite places I’ve ever been. The Ambassador’s friends thought he was going to Mauritius when he got the job because they’d never heard of Mauritania – I mean, who has? But it was the most wonderful, characterful place full of lovely people. The Ambassador turned to me at one stage and said, 'In a minute, one of the chaps serving us is going to call me Excellency and if you laugh, I shall kick you.' I did laugh, of course I did."

You couldn’t drink alcohol in Mauritania. What was your first beer like when you got over the border? Richard says: "Well, I think it’s quite known that we like a beer. So, I’d say immense relief. It was almost needed on a cellular level. I was worried that my cells would forget how to connect if I didn't get a beer. I worried that because having a beer was all I could think of my atoms would forget to be bonded together in the right order and I might just turn into a cloud and vanish."

The film ends with you on the beach where the Paris-Dakar race finishes. What was that like? Richard says: "That was in Senegal but most of the film was spent in Mauritania — It’s a spectacular place. It’s four times the size of the UK but with hardly any people. It’s so big, so empty, and breath-taking. We never go anywhere that's not nice to look at, but this really was a bit special."

What did the history of the Paris-Dakar race mean to you in that moment?  Richard says: "A hell of a lot. I mean, it was legendary. If you’re into cars, you're going to be aware of the Paris-Dakar in its heyday, because the machinery, scenery, and what they did was incredible. So yeah, it meant a lot to drive in that same space. It was really exhilarating."

Is this a special that will appeal to the proper petrol heads amongst your fans?  Richard says: "I think this special treads that path that we've travelled very carefully which is that you don't have to be a car nerd to watch the show because we do that for you. That's been our motto, spoken and unspoken, for all of the years we’ve done it because it's in our blood, it’s in our hearts and you can see it. I think it does look beautiful. We’ve gone somewhere that people don't get to go to, and it’s fabulous to put that on screen for people. Cajoling an Aston Martin across a massive desert is a unique experience, so from my point of view this was a huge reminder of how lucky we are to get to go and have an adventure like that. I hope people enjoy it. I think it's a fine example of the nonsense that we enjoy getting up to."

Can you tease anything about the next special?  Richard says: "There are some familiar places, and it was a joy to be in Zimbabwe after so many years. We always have a great time in Africa. Zimbabwe was just unbelievable."

The Grand Tour: Sand Job on Prime Video follws the route of the famous Paris/Dakar rally.

Interview with James May on The Grand Tour: Sand Job

As well as Top Gear and The Grand Tour , James May is known for his travelogue James May: Our Man In… He’s also presented James May: Oh Cook! , James May: The Reassembler , James May’s Man Lab and Oz, and James’ Big Wine Adventure, with Oz Clarke. .

Tell us about the car you chose for The Grand Tour: Sand Job… James May says: "Well, I have much better taste and judgement than the other two so my car, the Maserati, was definitely the best looking. And it worked pretty well for the whole route, actually, proving that you don't need to spend £200,000 on a rally car. I think my budget was about £30,000."

Was it quite nice not being the one that was left behind, for a change?  James says: "I think it was long overdue, because I've been left behind in quite a few other things due to poor choices. Especially Eurocrash, that car was just so dreadful. So yes, it was quite gratifying and also slightly surprising because, of all those cars, you’d expect the Maserati to be the unreliable one; they do have a bit of a reputation for fragility. I mean, Aston Martins aren’t brilliant in that respect, but Hammond’s was just a disaster from the start. I knew it. I have a sixth sense about these things. When we buy those cars, I can stand near them, and I know if they're trouble."

What mistake do you think Hammond made in choosing his car?  James says: "I think it's just frank stupidity. There are sophisticated electronics in all modern cars which can go wrong, and small faults can be quite difficult to fix if you haven't got the right diagnostic equipment, which generally you don't have in the middle of a desert. So, the generous reply would be that it was just bad luck, but I prefer the response that it was due to uselessness."

Is this a special for petrol heads?  James says: "It’s certainly a bit more car-y than some other ones. We sort of alternate between car-y ones and more travel/sitcom ones. Eurocrash was not very car-y, but the French one was about car history, for example, and I’d say on that scale, this one leans towards being quite car-y. All three cars that we drove are interesting. They're all desirable cars, at least in their original form, and the idea of modelling a car and racing them across a desert is quite appealing to a lot of people."

You seemed to enjoy getting the cars off the train at the start of the journey… James says: "Yes, there were several things that I thought were exciting. One was that I was allowed to drive the shunter to manoeuvre the trucks, which I've always wanted to do, and that was great. Then we got my car off with planks, and I drove it very precariously and heroically, which is why they cut that bit out. Then we had to get the other two cars off with the telehandler which Jeremy is now an expert at because of his farming. He will always tell you he’s useless at anything practical, but he did that very well. It was great fun. I’m openly into that engineering nerdy stuff and I don't mind admitting it. Hammond is too: obviously he now runs a car repair centre and he’s done other shows in the past that have an engineering element. So, we do like it."

Did you enjoy being in the desert?  James says: "We actually all quite like being in a desert. We like the dust and the sand and the heat. It's exhausting, but it's all the things that T.E. Lawrence talked about, he said “the desert cleans you and it’s pure”, and I think that’s true. We all slightly get off on that and we feel like we're being really heroic and manly."

You did go for quite a T.E. Lawrence look with your headscarves…   James says: "Yeah, that was partly because it is incredibly hot. It's even hotter than I've experienced in India, and I thought that was the hottest I was ever going to be, so you actually do need to protect yourself. In that portion of the day, between one and four o'clock in the afternoon where supposedly only Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out, the locals generally hide inside. So, if you are outside, you have to cover up, or you'd be burned to a crisp, and you’d get sunstroke and go mad."

Did you get dehydrated?   James says: "We did go a few days without a proper wee, and I'm someone who likes to urinate freely. I mean, not in my trousers, but I don't like to hold it in. When we did wee it sort of came out as dust.

How did you feel about camping?   James says: "It’s awful. I mean, you don't really have much choice because it's a pretty empty country. All the bits we were in had no hotels or anything. Since the sixties I think there have only been fifty filming permits or so. So, we had to camp."

How did you cope with the heat and the dust?  James says: "I find it quite exciting when it gets very hot and very dusty. I've always been neurotic about dust in the home and actually I don't like dust in my own car, but somehow when you do those desert drives, it's nice that everything gets covered in dust and you get covered in dust and it sort of dries your hands and sticks in your hair."

Did you enjoy going to the British Ambassador’s house?  James says: "It was fantastic. He even had Ferrero Rocher: I didn’t actually think they were real. I thought there was one pyramid in existence, and they got moved around the world for photoshoots and filming, but he really did have them. Which is weird because they're not a British thing, are they? Aren’t they from Austria or Switzerland or something? I suppose an Ambassador is just expected to have them. But yes, it was wonderful and surreal. He’s got this rather lovely house with a nice garden."

What was your first beer like when you got over the border?  James says: "It was nice. Jeremy was pontificating about how you're supposed to admire the condensation and savour the moment which I think is just because he was trying to do a covert advert for his own beer. Whereas I just think oh, it's a beer and I've been waiting for it for several weeks, so I’ll drink it and look at the lovely view instead of the beer."

What was it like finishing the journey on the same beach as the Paris-Dakar race?  James says: "Driving on sand features in some of the greatest things we've done over the years. Back when we did the Namibia special in the beach buggies, I had a fantastic sunset drive across the dunes on my own because I'd been left behind as usual while I stopped to do something to my car, and that was fabulous as well. It’s the same reason anybody likes going to the beach: I suppose there's something quite primeval about it. You're at the edge of the land. It's unspoiled and there's nothing there apart from a few elements: water, sky and sand. It just appeals to something in humans and so yes, it was terrific."

What did the history of the Paris-Dakar race mean to you in that moment?  James says: "That was a massive thing when I first started working on car magazines back in the early nineties. It used to get a lot of coverage as it's a very gruelling thing."

How would you summarise Sand Job? James says: "We tend to be a bit optimistic and we tend to push complications to one side and hope that somebody will deal with them. So, I was quite pleased that it ended up being a good adventure. It's a very long special because there's a lot of material. We always tell ourselves we don't actually need to do 1200 miles or whatever, because we have enough adventure in 200 miles to make a special. But we still go back and do 1200 miles, because either we like it or we're a bit stupid."

Interview with Jeremy Clarkson on The Grand Tour: Sand Job

Jeremy Clarkson is best known for Top Gear , in which he starred alongside Richard Hammond and James May from 2002 to 2015. He also presented shows like Jeremy Clarkson’s Extreme Machines, Motorworld and Clarkson: Unleashed on Cars . More recently Jeremy has fronted Clarkson’s Farm , Who Wants to be a Millionaire and It’s Clarkson on TV .

How did you feel about doing this show in Mauritania?  Jeremy Clarkson says: "I love deserts so I've always wanted to do the Sahara, but it’s difficult to go there; you can't go to Mali or Libya or Algeria or Chad. You can't go to the top of Nigeria. And then it was really a question of finding the most inappropriate cars for trans-Sahara travel, and I think we did a pretty good job on that."

Tell us about your car... Jeremy says: "The Jaguar F-Type V6 Supercharged VS. Well put it like this: it was so impressive, I came home and bought one immediately. And I don’t think Hammond bought an Aston Martin afterwards. The other two made unwise choices, as usual. The Jaguar was so tough and so unbreakable. I discovered something interesting: Jaguar has a reputation for making flimsy cars, cars that fall to pieces, it has this reputation for unreliability, so I couldn't understand why my car was so capable. I did some checking, and it turns out that at the time this car was made, Jaguar Land Rover – which is one company – had one test that a car had to pass before it could go on sale which is all to do with mounting curbs at high speed and running over potholes and biffing into things. And the test was designed for the Range Rover, but the Jaguar had to pass the same test. So, they are extraordinarily strong. I cannot lavish enough praise on that car. I brought back the one I drove in Mauritania too, I have it at the farm.

You mentioned the other two making unwise choices. Can you expand on that?  Jeremy says: "Well, Hammond in particular had constant issues. It started off being funny and then it became annoying because it was relentlessly unreliable. His was as unreliable as mine was reliable."

This film put you to the test in all sorts of ways. You had to get your cars off a train, and then drive them across a body of water… Jeremy says: "Yes, and we attached snowmobiles to the front of the Jag to try and even out the road surface. It’s potty engineering, an idiotic idea but it worked. The funny thing with the cars on the train is that we thought it would be a bit like what happened in Bolivia when they arrived on a barge, and it took us ten days to get them off. We thought we'd have the same problems in Mauritania, but we found an old telehandler loader like the ones we use on farms and, now that I'm a farmer, I was able to get them off quite easily. For once I did something properly."

What was the heat like?  Jeremy says: "You know, the funny thing is you don't get filthy in a desert. It's a very strange thing but sand is incredibly clean. We’ve experienced this in the Atacama and the Gobi and the Nomad and all the places we've driven over the years. You don't get dirty. But it was bloody tough. We drank litres and litres of water, and we didn’t pee. I mean, I don't know where it was going. Hammond said after three or four days, “I’m going to have a pee” and I suddenly thought, “I haven't had a pee this whole time.” When people go to see the Northern Lights, for example, they boast that it was minus 30 and you think "No, it wasn’t, it was minus six” or they say it was 50 degrees somewhere hot and you go, “No, it was maybe 38 in the midday sun.” Well, this really was 50 degrees in the shade. You never see the locals during the day, ever. We hardly saw anybody at all but if we did occasionally encounter a small village, it would have maybe six or seven huts and everyone would be inside them all day. They venture out only after the sun has set because it's so hot. Camping is always ghastly but when you're in the middle of the Sahara Desert, you have no alternative. There are no hotels, there are no guest houses or even restaurants or shops. It's very much the opposite of, say, Luxembourg."

You did see civilisation when you went to the Ambassador’s house. Did he really have a tray of Ferrero Rocher? Jeremy says: "I don’t think they were put there for us. I certainly didn’t see anybody putting those Ferrero Rocher chocolates there. We were sitting on the sofa when he went off to make us a cup of tea and I went to take a look and somehow, I managed to break his decoration. That was really funny. That's probably my favourite scene in the entire show actually. I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a British Embassy anywhere, but they are amazing. I remember in the middle of the Iraq war in 2002 I went out to Baghdad to cover it for the Sunday Times. They pick you up from the airport in an armoured Land Rover with helicopter cover and so on, then we got to the British Embassy, and they had people in the gardens doing topiary. I mean, it was beautifully manicured lawns, fountains, Country Life magazines spread out on all the tables. It was astonishing. And it was the same in Mauritania: you drive through the desert where people are selling sand to one another and suddenly there is this swimming pool, manicured lawns, elegant surroundings, beautiful furniture. It’s fantastic. If ever you're absolutely desperate, in any country, head straight to the British Embassy."

They didn’t give you a beer, though. How was your first beer when you finally got over the border? Jeremy says: "Well, it wasn’t a Hawkstone [Jeremy’s own beer] so it was disgusting. I mean, as an alternative beer goes, it was very welcome. But I like to savour a beer before I drink it. Those two just plunged in, but I like to look at it and then see what the anticipation of a cold beer feels like after however many days in a dry country."

What was it like to drive on the famous beach from the Paris-Dakar race?  Jeremy says: "I love travelling on beaches. I've done it in New Zealand and Wales and now Western Africa. It's just a wonderful thing to do. It would have been fun anyway but the most important thing about that drive was that we were re-enacting what they used to do at the end of the Paris-Dakar rally, and we always used to see these amazing pieces of film of the camera helicopters chasing the cars down the beach as they came into Dakar for the finish of this epic rally from Paris. It was beautiful, it was a lovely day and I had Seven Seconds on the stereo as well which is that Senegalese song, which was nice."

You seemed to enjoy each other’s company very much, as usual.  Jeremy says: "It was honestly hilarious. Hammond’s Aston endlessly breaking down was very funny. Listen, when we do these things, it is a laugh from start to finish. We know what we're doing and we do enjoy one another's company. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been doing it for twenty-five years. It was tremendous. It was a big laugh. The fact it’s the longest special we've ever made testifies to how good it is because there’s very little you’d want to throw away. It’s all exciting, good stuff."

Can you tease us about the final one?  Jeremy says: "It’s my favourite one we’ve ever done. I've always thought we'd never go anywhere better than Botswana, and now we have."

The Grand Tour Season 2

Amazon Prime Video ’s automotive series “ The Grand Tour ” is not moving forward at the streamer — at least with its current hosts, former “Top Gear” trio Jeremy Clarkson , James May and Richard Hammond.

The presenter further confirmed the news in a post on his Instagram , writing: “Been a busy day. No more ‘Grand Tour’ after next year but a LOT more ‘Clarkson’s Farm.'”

Amazon Prime Video declined to comment on the matter.

“The Grand Tour” premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2016, following Clarkson, May and Hammond’s exit from the BBC series “Top Gear” after Clarkson was fired for punching a producer. The BBC revealed on Nov. 21 that “Top Gear” is also not returning “for the foreseeable future.” The announcement came after presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff was injured in an on-set accident in December, resulting in a pause in production on the show’s 34th season. Flintoff had been a presenter on the series since 2019, alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris.

“Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the U.K. show for the foreseeable future,” the BBC said in a statement. “The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy who have been at the heart of the show’s renaissance since 2019, and we’re excited about new projects being developed with each of them. We will have more to say in the near future on this. We know resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do.”

What people love about 3 Day Grand Canyon Tours

Tour guide a great humanist able to reach out to all, domestic and foreign, to first form individual friendships that then led collectively to group bonding to experience nature's wonders. All members of our group became friends sharing the influence of our guide who understands human nature the way God would have it.
Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.
Loved the tour guide and bus driver

The Three Grand Tours of Bicycle Racing

The Three Grand Tours of Bicycle Racing

They became the second and third riders to add their name to that list this season, with Alejandro Valverde also joining the pantheon of greats when he bagged a stage win at the Giro d’Italia.

Topped by Eddy Merckx, who boasts 64 stage wins across the three Grand Tours, 12 of the riders to have achieved a “Grand Tour triple” are still active in the modern peloton.

Boasting 161 Grand Tour stage wins between them – including six of the first ten stages of this year’s Tour de France – we’ve rounded up those 12 men below.

Mark Cavendish (GBR)

Only three men in cycling history have won more Grand Tour stages than Manxman Mark Cavendish, so it is little surprise to see him on the list.

3 grand tour

Victory on stage six of this year’s Tour de France, his third of the race so far, took him to 29 stage wins at the Tour – only Eddy Merckx (34) has more – and, with 15 victories at the Giro d’Italia and three at the Vuelta a Espana he is closing in on a career half-century.

A points classification winner at all three Grand Tours, Cavendish has also worn the leader’s jersey at all three – completing the set with victory on stage one of the Tour de France.

Grand Tour stage wins: 47 (Giro d’Italia – 15; Tour de France – 29; Vuelta a Espana – 3) Stand-out moment: Cavendish won four times in succession on the Champs-Elysees, but his 2011 victory sealed the green jersey for the first – and only – time, with HTC-HighRoad at the height of their sprinting domination.

Andre Greipel (GER)

Andre Greipel stepped out of the shadow of Mark Cavendish at HTC to prove himself as a superb sprinter in his own right.

3 grand tour

The German champion, nicknamed the Gorilla , has picked up eight of his 20 Grand Tour stage wins in the last two seasons and 14 in total since leaving the HTC team in 2011.

Greipel dominated the bunch sprints at the 2015 Tour de France, picking up four victories in all including the prestigious final stage on the Champs-Elysees.

Grand Tour stage wins: 20 (Giro d’Italia – 6; Tour de France – 10; Vuelta a Espana – 4) Stand-out moment: Having played second fiddle to Cavendish at HTC, Greipel beat the Manxman in a straight sprint showdown on stage ten of the 2011 Tour de France to win his first Tour stage – and complete his Grand Tour triple.

Marcel Kittel (GER)

Marcel Kittel has already won stages of the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France in 2016, recapturing the sprinting prowess which has made him one of the most feared sprinters in the bunch.

3 grand tour

His first Grand Tour stage win came at the 2011 Vuelta a Espana, before the German announced himself as a serious contender with four stage wins at the 2013 Tour de France.

Victory in Belfast, at the Giro d’Italia, the following year completed his Grand Tour triple and kick-started a remarkable run of form on British shores as he also won in Harrogate, London (twice) and Liverpool at the Tour de France and Tour of Britain that year.

Grand Tour stage wins: 14 (Giro d’Italia – 4; Tour de France – 9; Vuelta a Espana –1) Stand-out moment: Kittel had already proved himself with three victories at the 2013 Tour de France, but de-throned Mark Cavendish on the final stage on the Champs-Elysees to end the Manxman’s four-year winning streak in Paris.

Alejandro Valverde (ESP)

Alejandro Valverde was the first of, to date, three riders to complete a Grand Tour triple in 2016 – winning stage 16 of his first ever Giro d’Italia.

3 grand tour

Third place in that race was his seventh Grand Tour podium finish, and allowed him to add stage victory in Andolo to his four Tour stage wins and nine at the Vuelta.

Valverde has also won the Vuelta a Espana in 2009 and three times pulled on the green points classification jersey, in 2012, 2013 and 2015, thanks to his consistently high stage finishes across flatter, hilly and mountainous stages in his home race.

Grand Tour stage wins: 14 (Giro d’Italia – 1; Tour de France – 4; Vuelta a Espana – 9) Stand-out moment: Making his Giro d’Italia debut, aged 36, Valverde attacked on the final climb of the hilly stage to Andolo to complete his Grand Tour triple – by going on to finish third overall, he is one of only 16 men to finish on the podium of all three Grand Tours.

Joaquim Rodriguez (ESP)

Diminutive Spanish climber Joaquim Rodriguez has been one of the foremost riders at Grand Tours, but – having announced his intention to retire at the end of the season – is likely to end his career having never won one.

3 grand tour

He has, however, clocked 14 stage wins in all, including nine in his ‘home’ Tour – the Vuelta a Espana.

His annus mirabilis was undoubtedly the 2012 season when he led both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana into the final week but ultimately had to settle for podium finishes.

Grand Tour stage wins: 14 (Giro d’Italia – 2; Tour de France – 3; Vuelta a Espana – 9) Stand-out moment: Though Contador would ultimately claim overall victory, Purito outfoxed his fellow Spaniard twice at the 2012 Vuelta a Espana – his win on stage 12 was classic Rodriguez, accelerating away on one of the steepest sections of the Mirador de Ezaro.

Vincenzo Nibali (ITA)

Giro d’Italia champion Vincenzo Nibali is the only current cyclist to have both won all three Grand Tours and won stages at all of them – Alberto Contador was stripped of his two 2011 Giro stage wins.

3 grand tour

Nibali’s tally includes five wins at the Tour de France, four of which arrived in 2014 as he dominated the Tour – taking the yellow jersey with victory in Sheffield and only surrendering it for one day between then and Paris.

The Shark of Messinah has 12 Grand Tour stage wins in total, but two of his six victories at the Giro d’Italia were awarded retrospectively – Alberto Contador (2011) and Mauro Santambrogio (2013) being stripped of their wins after beating him.

Grand Tour stage wins: 12 (Giro d’Italia – 6; Tour de France – 5; Vuelta a Espana – 1) Stand-out moment: Vincenzo Nibali was untouchable at the 2014 Tour de France, and was already well clear overall when he launched a stinging attack on the Hautacam climb to win stage 18 – his fourth stage victory of the race – and prove his domination.

Daniele Bennati (ITA)

Though 35-year-old Italian Daniele Bennati’s star has faded in recent years – his last Grand Tour stage win came at the 2012 Vuelta a Espana – Benna proved himself as a canny sprinter between 2007 and 2008 in particular.

3 grand tour

During that period, Bennati did not only win stages at all three Grand Tours but also topped the points classification at both the 2007 Vuelta a Espana and 2008 Giro d’Italia.

Formerly a lead-out man for Mario Cipollini, Bennati’s success at the 2008 Giro – which completed his Grand Tour triple – saw him clock three stage wins in all, with a young Mark Cavendish his chief rival.

Grand Tour stage wins: 11 (Giro d’Italia – 3; Tour de France – 2; Vuelta a Espana – 6)

Stand-out moment: Having won the points classification at that year’s Giro d’Italia, Bennati led the Vuelta a Espana after stage two, and promptly out-sprinted Tom Boonen to claim victory in the red jersey the following day.

Philippe Gilbert (BEL)

There wasn’t much Philippe Gilbert could do wrong in 2011, and – in the Belgian champion’s jersey – he completed his Grand Tour triple by winning the opening stage of the Tour de France.

3 grand tour

Already a stage winner at both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana by that point, victories have dried up slightly since he became world champion in 2012, however.

Nevertheless, in the rainbow jersey, the Belgian won stage 12 of the 2013 Vuelta – his only victory during his 12 months as world champion.

Grand Tour stage wins: 9 (Giro d’Italia – 3; Tour de France – 1; Vuelta a Espana – 5)

Stand-out moment: A clean sweep of the Ardennes Classics and victory in the Belgian national road race meant Philippe Gilbert arrived at the 2011 Tour de France in supreme form – and he proved it, winning the first stage to swap his national colours for the yellow jersey.

Tyler Farrar (USA)

Another rider to have completed a Grand Tour triple before seeing his star fade – Tyler Farrar’s most recent Grand Tour stage win was at the 2011 Tour de France.

3 grand tour

The American, has suffered much misfortune since – crashing four times at the Tour the following year, and earning a reputation for being involved in many crashes through the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

A move to MTN-Qhubeka in 2015 saw him become part of the team’s lead-out train instead – though he was overlooked for Mark Cavendish’s lead-out at the 2016 Tour de France.

Grand Tour stage wins: 6 (Giro d’Italia – 2; Tour de France – 1; Vuelta a Espana – 3)

Stand-out moment: Victory on stage three of the 2011 Tour de France was significant for many reasons for Tyler Farrar – not only did it arrive just months after his training partner, Wouter Weylandt, died at the Giro d’Italia, the American’s victory, which completed his Grand Tour triple, also arrived on Independence Day; no other American has won a Tour stage on July 4.

Michael Matthews (AUS)

Victory on stage ten of this year’s Tour de France made Michael Matthews the 89 th rider to complete a Grand Tour triple – and the third to do so in the 2016 season.

3 grand tour

Australian Matthews has also led both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana and the 25-year-old’s ability on the tougher uphill finishes looks set to stand him in good stead for more Grand Tour success in future.

Matthews’ victory in Revel was also the Orica-BikeExchange’s first win at the Tour de France for three years – a year after a disastrous Tour which saw three riders abandon injured in the first week and Bling complete the Tour despite breaking his ribs in the stage three crash.

Stand-out moment: After taking over the pink jersey, courtesy of the team’s time trial win in Belfast and a high placing in the bunch sprint the following day, Matthews openly targeted the uphill finish into Montecassino on stage six – and, still in the pink jersey, the Australian delivered exactly as promised, winning from a late four-man attack.

Simon Gerrans (AUS)

Simon Gerrans wore the yellow jersey after stage success, and team time trial victory, at the 2013 Tour de France but it was four years earlier that he completed his Grand Tour triple.

3 grand tour

Riding for the Cervelo Test Team, Gerrans won stages at both the 2009 Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, to add to victory at the Tour the previous year.

Despite several one-day wins, and four overall triumphs at the Tour Down Under, the former Team Sky man still has just the four Grand Tour stage wins to his name, however.

Grand Tour stage wins: 4 (Giro d’Italia – 1; Tour de France – 2; Vuelta a Espana – 1) Stand-out moment: After a hilly third and final stage on Corsica at the 100 th Tour de France in 2013, Gerrans outsprinted Peter Sagan to claim Orica-GreenEDGE’s first Tour de France stage win. Their second arrived the following day, in the team time trial, giving Gerrans the yellow jersey.

Tom Dumoulin (NED)

Already established as a solid time triallist, Tom Dumoulin proved his potential as a Grand Tour rider at the 2015 Vuelta a Espana with two stage wins, holding the red jersey up until the penultimate stage, when Fabio Aru distanced him in the mountains.

3 grand tour

Dumoulin won the opening stage of the 2016 Giro d’Italia, however, to briefly wear the pink jersey before completing his Grand Tour triple with a stunning solo stage win in Andorra on stage nine of the 2016 Tour de France.

With four stage wins to his name in less than 12 months, big things are expected of the 25-year-old Dutchman in future. Grand Tour stage wins: 4 (Giro d’Italia – 1; Tour de France – 1; Vuelta a Espana – 2) Stand-out moment: Tom Dumoulin completed his Grand Tour triple with a dogged ride on the 2016 Tour de France’s Queen Stage. Tackling the fierce gradients of the Andorran mountains, Dumoulin soloed to victory to complete a remarkable 12 months at the Grand Tours.

What is next for The Grand Tour trio?

Will jeremy clarkson, richard hammond and james may work together again.

Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May 's final episode on The Grand Tour is coming this September, so what are they planning to do next?

Off screen the trio have been friends for 20 years. Recently, Hammond told Yahoo of their friendship : "We've worked together a very long time and been lucky to share some simply incredible experiences that none of us ever thought would come our way. And not just share them with our mates but share them with a global audience which, again, we never thought we'd have the opportunity to do."

They become global stars when they started as presenters on BBC's Top Gear in 2003. When Clarkson got fired for punching Top Gear's producer, May and Hammond stuck with him and quit the show saying: "We come as a package."

Then they launched rival car show The Grand Tour with Prime Video in 2015. After many successful seasons, the three friends decided it was time to part ways with the show. Their last episode has been filmed and will air in September.

We take a look at what the trio are getting up to...

Read more: What to expect from the final episode of The Grand Tour

Jeremy Clarkson

Clarkson has had great success with his record-breaking Prime Video series Clarkson's Farm, that documents life on Diddly Squat Farm including all the trials and tribulations. Filming for a fourth series is underway and they have no plans on slowing down the series any time soon.

His girlfriend Lisa Hogan said: "As long as it's educating people, and showing people how difficult farming is, and it's helping people appreciate food in a way that they may not have before. Maybe people will pop their bread in the freezer instead of throwing it out when they see how much work goes into making a loaf of bread."

In his personal life, Clarkson's Farm fans would love to see Clarkson ask Hogan to marry him .

Richard Hammond

Meanwhile, Hammond has teamed up with his daughter Izzy again for the second season of their podcast Who We Are Now. The podcast was born out of a conversation with his daughter about men's mental health. It's something they are incredibly passionate about, especially as Hammond suffered a brain injury in 2006 after a crash.

The first episode of the new season will be available for fans to listen to on Tuesday. May appeared on the first season of their podcast and we can't wait to see when Clarkson signs up!

The presenter teased details of the new series on his Instagram. He wrote: "We’ve been chatting to some amazing guests and cannot wait for you to hear their stories, challenges, advice and more. And keep your eyes peeled for a special extra episode this Friday.

"Thank you again for all your support, we really appreciate it. Talking about mental health is so important, and I hope by listening to us ramble away you might feel a tiny bit less alone."

Alongside The Grand Tour, May had launched his own solo series Our Man with Prime Video. It's a travel series that sees him travel to the country and throw himself into the culture. His latest series was released this year, Our Man in India. Before India, May had enjoyed exploring to Japan and Italy.

Of course, it begs the question, will the three of them work together again? And what for?

But last week, May admitted it was "unlikely" they would ever make a car show together again. He told the Today podcast: "We're not going to make another series together about cars."

He added: "We have to accept we've done it for nearly 22 years. When I started doing it in 2003, I thought this was a bit of a laugh and maybe it would last a few years."

What Was the Grand Tour and Where Did People Go?

Freelance Travel and Music Writer

Nowadays, it’s so easy to pack a bag and hop on a flight or interrail across Europe’s railway at your own leisure. But what if it was known as a right of passage, made no easier by the fact that there was no such modern luxury? Welcome to the Grand Tour – and we’re not talking about Jeremy Clarkson’s TV series …

What was the grand tour all about.

The Grand Tour was a trip of Europe, typically undertaken by young men, which begun in the 17th century and went through to the mid-19th. Women over the age of 21 would occasionally partake, providing they were accompanied by a chaperone from their family. The Grand Tour was seen as an educational trip across Europe, usually starting in Dover, and would see young, wealthy travellers search for arts and culture. Though travelling was not as easy back then, mostly thanks to no rail routes like today, those on The Grand Tour would often have a healthy supply of funds in order to enjoy themselves freely.

European pinpoints

What did travellers get up to?

Just like us today, explorers travelled to discover and experience all kinds of different cultures. With their near-unlimited funds, travellers would often head off for months – or even years – in search of Western civilisation, perfecting their language skills and even commissioning paintings in the process.

Of course, in the 17th century, there was no such thing as the internet, making discovering things while sat on the other side of the world near impossible. Cultural integration was not yet fully-fledged and nothing like we experience today, so the only way to understand different ways of life was to experience them yourself. Hence why so many people set off for the Grand Tour – the ultimate trip across Europe!

Typical routes taken on the Grand Tour

Travellers (occompanied by a tutor) would often start around the South East region and head in to France, where a coach would often be rented should the party be wealthy enough. Occasionally, the coaches would need to be disassembled in order to cross difficult terrain such as the Alps.

Once passing through Calais and Paris, a typical journey would include a stop-off in Switzerland before crossing the Alps in to Northern Italy. Here’s where the wealth really comes in to play – as luggage and methods of transport would need to be dismantled and carried manually – as really rich travellers would often employ servants to carry everything for them.

Of course, Italy is a highly cultural country and famous for its art and historic buildings, so travellers would spend longer here. Turin, Florence, Rome, Pompeii and Venice would be amongst the cities visited, generally enticing those in to extended stays.

On the return leg, travellers would visit Germany and occasionally Austria, including study time at universities such as Munich, before heading to Holland and Flanders, ahead of crossing the Channel back to Dover.

Has anyone won all three Grand Tours?

Pro Cycling Bets

Pro Cycling Bets

The short answer is no. The longer answer is sorta. And the longer answer is sorta and probably never again.

What is a Grand Tour?

As a reminder a Grand Tour is one of the three major three week cycling events that span the calendar year. These are, in order of start date, the Giro, the Tour de France, and La Vuelta.

Why is the short answer no?

Generally the question is framed around if a rider has ever won all three Grand Tours in the same calendar year . In that regard there has never been a rider to do so.

Why is the long answer sorta?

There have been riders who have won all three in succession, hence holding all at once, but having spanned this feat across calendar years. So for example they won the Tour de France in 2022, La Vuelta in 2022, and the Giro in 2023. There are three of these riders: Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Chris Froome.

Why is the longer answer never again?

In the era of modern cycling each race is raced incredibly hard. Riders can no longer use early season races as training, altitude camps are a must, and riders must "peak" their performance for each of the events they want to perform well at. The pointy end is now so high, and high across the board (as in there's no longer just one team, eg. a Team Sky that has all the best knowledge or talent) that domination by one rider or one team for all three events seems increasingly out or reach.

If a rider wanted to attempt to achieve the feat they'd miss out on altitude camps, rest and recovery, or more productive training (Grand Tour "racing" days aren't that productive for top GC contenders). This would limit their ability to peak and win against their comptetition who had been planning and peaking for the event. And boy is their competition these days.

Don't get us wrong! We'd love to see it happen. We just don't think it will. Despite how good a Pogačar or Evenepoel is.

The character starting an activity is the Host and chooses a barony for the activity, with the cost depending on the barony. The map will pin the best 5 baronies for the activity but any valid barony can be selected. All characters who attend an activity must travel to the designated barony unless it's their realm capital. Traveling has two important factors to keep track of:

Each character will travel with an Entourage made up of characters relevant to the activity. Characters who have Court Physician or Bodyguard court positions will always join and additional characters can be added via travel options. Schemes progress is paused if either character is traveling, unless both characters are part of the same Entourage. If a ruler travel destination lies outside their realm, a regent will assume power until the ruler returns.

Travel options [ edit | edit source ]

Each character who travels may select up to two travel options to improve traveling:

Regular activities [ edit | edit source ]

Grand activities [ edit | edit source ], grand tournament [ edit | edit source ].

The Grand Tournament is a highly interactive activity that can be held every 10 years in a Domain barony. It is only available for adult characters. Grand Tournaments have two Activity Options:

Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond in 'The Grand Tour' on Prime Video

When does the final episode of ‘The Grand Tour’ season 5 come out?

Mateusz Miter

Fans of The Grand Tour are highly anticipating the release of the show’s fourth and final episode of season 5, which takes place in Zimbabwe. Emotions will be at an all-time high since it’s the end of the show.

For over 20 years, the unforgettable trio of Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have entertained millions of fans around the world with shows revolving around cars. It was first known as Top Gear and aired on BBC before the trio was acquired by Amazon in 2016. Now, after eight wonderful years with the studio, the trio is set to finish the series once and for all, and it will all come to a head in episode 4 of season 5.

A few details about the upcoming episode are known. For starters, we’re certain it’s taking Clarkson , May, and Hammond back to Africa. This time they will be exploring Zimbabwe, for which the filming took place in September last year. A fair amount of time has passed since then, so we’re bound to know the release date of the episode, right?

When will ‘The Grand Tour’s season 5, episode 4 be released?

Unfortunately, as of June, we’re yet to know the exact release date of the latest episode of The Grand Tour . Amazon did reveal that the final outing will premiere in 2024, though the studio hasn’t shed any further details.

The previous, penultimate episode named The Grand Tour: Sand Job took place in Mauritania and saw the three hosts take a trip through the Sahara desert. It released in February, and only increased fans’ appetite for one last ride together.

Unluckily, all we can do for now is wait patiently. If you’re like us and don’t like sitting and just waiting, we’d advise you to rewatch all the previous episodes of The Grand Tour . We are certainly doing that before we have to say one final goodbye to Clarkson, May, and Hammond.

The Grand Tour Is Ending – The End Of An Era As Top Gear Finishes Too

The iconic motoring shows, ‘The Grand Tour’ and ‘Top Gear,’ are reaching their final laps, marking the end of a significant era in automotive television. As Jeremy Clarkson , James May , and Richard Hammond conclude their journey with ‘The Grand Tour,’ the BBC has also decided to put ‘Top Gear’ on hold.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Grand Tour Finale: Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have wrapped up filming their last episode of ‘The Grand Tour’ after seven years on Amazon Prime. The final special, filmed in Zimbabwe, is set to air next year.
  • Top Gear on Hiatus: Following an accident involving presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff, the BBC has announced that ‘Top Gear’ will not be returning “for the foreseeable future.” The network is considering options for a new version of the show.
  • Evolution and Controversy: The trio started with ‘Top Gear’ in 2003, making it a global success despite controversies. After leaving the BBC in 2015, they joined Amazon Prime, where ‘The Grand Tour’ became a hit. Other projects by the hosts, including Clarkson’s Farm and May’s Our Man In… , continue on Amazon.

The automotive world is witnessing the end of an era with the conclusion of two of its most iconic shows: The Grand Tour and Top Gear. After a thrilling seven-year journey on Amazon Prime, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have filmed their final episode of The Grand Tour. The trio, known for their dynamic chemistry and adventurous spirits, recently returned from Zimbabwe, where they shot the last special, scheduled to be released next year.

3 grand tour

The end of The Grand Tour aligns with the news of ‘Top Gear’ taking an indefinite break. The BBC’s decision comes in the wake of presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff’s accident during filming last year. The network is exploring options for a new incarnation of the show, acknowledging the need for a refreshed approach in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Clarkson, May, and Hammond have been synonymous with Top Gear since 2003, steering the show to immense popularity globally. Despite its success, the show wasn’t without its controversies, most notably leading to Clarkson’s departure from the BBC in 2015 following a dispute. Hammond and May followed suit, paving the way for their next venture with Amazon Prime and the birth of The Grand Tour.

The Grand Tour has enjoyed five successful series, becoming one of Amazon’s best-performing original series. Its format, coupled with the hosts’ unique blend of humour, insight, and adventure, captivated a vast audience, making it a staple in automotive entertainment.

Beyond The Grand Tour, Clarkson, May, and Hammond have not slowed down. Their individual projects, such as Clarkson’s Farm and Our Man In… by May, continue to entertain and inform on Amazon Prime.

As fans prepare to bid farewell to these groundbreaking shows, the impact and legacy of The Grand Tour and Top Gear remain indelible in the world of motoring entertainment. Their departure signals not just the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter in automotive broadcasting.

How much prize money will be on offer at the 2024 Tour de France?

There is around €2.3 million up for grabs in the 2024 race

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

Overall winner Jonas Vingegaard on the podium after the final stage of the 2023 Tour de France

The Tour de France 2024 starts next Saturday, the 29 June, in Florence. With just days until the biggest race of the year, it's time to take a look at just how much money is on offer for those who do well. Despite inflation, none of this has changed for this year.

The overall victor will earn €500,000 (£423,000) for winning the Tour - that's around 20 per cent of the €2,301,200 (£1.95 million) prize purse. Vingegaard earned the same prize money last year and the year before, as did Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) in 2020 and 2021.

Second place earns €200,000 (£169,000), with GC money extending all the way down to €1,000 (£845) for 20th-160th overall

Stage wins are worth €11,000 (£9,518), with prize money offered to riders who finish in the top 20 on each day.

You also get money for leading the classifications each day, with €500 per stage given to the man in yellow, and €300 to the other distinctive riders.

Intermediate sprints each day are worth €1,500 for the first rider across the line, while second gets €1,000 and third €500.

The green jersey winner - the rider with the most sprint points at the end of the race - secures €25,000. Jasper Philipsen's (Alpecin-Decueninck) four stage wins, one intermediate sprint victory, 18 days in the green jersey (€300 a day) and points classification victory, therefore, saw him earn €70,500 (£61,000) last year.

As with the points classification, the mountains winner receives €25,000, with €200-€800 available on categorised climbs throughout the duration of the 21 stages. The harder the climb, the more money is available for each rider who passes the summit first.

€20,000 also goes to the rider who finishes as the best placed rider under the age of 25, the person in the white jersey.

The overall combativity award gifts an extra €20,000 for the overall prize and €2,000 per day with the gold numbers.

Jumbo-Visma, the winners of the team classification last year, netted €50,000, calculated by the cumulative time of each team's three fastest finishers. The same rule is applied on each stage, with €2,800 prize money awarded to the fastest team each day, too.

Traditionally, prize money is shared around a team rather than going to the sole winner, so domestiques might end up winning as much as their leader who wins overall.

This is the worst travel agency ever, I should check the previous reviews before joining their tour. They are not professional in the travel industry and rude to customers. 1. They don't have own bus or tour guide as advertised, they have NONE. They just "Sell" you to the local tour guide and partner with them to SCAM you. 2. The local tour guide is lack of professionalism either. He had full of dirty words in his mouth and didn't respect tourists from US! He didn't bring tour guide license with him for the entire trip (suspect if he has one). He didn't do his tour guide job at all. Do NOT expect him will escort you around a site, give information about the history, purpose and architecture of a site. Do NOT expect he will accompany you on day tours to a number of places of interest and answer questions and suggest other places to visit. He let you explore the sites all by yourself, didn't care if you are new to the area. There were lots of tour members got lost in the city, he threatened none of them could mention the incident instead of making an apology. His main job was to SCAM you!! Be prepared to pay triple priced or even higher attraction tickets and group meals he arranged. The information he gave you was to show off how rich he was, how much money he earned from stupid tourists from China mainland before pandemic. He requested you to call him "Boss" not tour guide and kept washing your mind to spend money and join his group meals and add on activities. The tour leader from travel agency will HELP to persuade you to join. For the $230 tips per person, this tour guide is totally ridiculous and unacceptable!! 3. More and more tourists were getting Covid-19 during the trip. Both the travel leader from the agency and the local guide didn't take any actions to protect rest tour members. Instead, they were hiding the truth and requested infected tourists not to tell others. In the end, almost entire group got Covid-19 from this trip. 4. Before we paid for the trip, the staff in the office told the tour time for the museum will be 3 hours. In fact, we only had 1 hour inside the museum for paying 40 euros ticket per person. They shortened the museum time so that the tour guide was able to add on pricy group meal and activities again which were originally not on the itinerary. 5. Don't believe the optional activities are "optional". You were FORCED to join their pricy activities, otherwise you are violating their rules. 6. They partnered with low end cruise company and "customized" the services for you. The experience was far below the standard, better you book directly with the cruise company. Stay away from this company unless you want to be scammed, get Covid-19 and ruin your vacation. This company is not a trustworthy business in the travel industry.

Photo of S K.

Complete and total lack of professionalism! Maggie from their marketing department is the worst at communicating. She hardly ever responds to messages, literally had to send multiple emails just to get a response. Forget booking with them if your Chinese isn't perfect. They will judge you and look down on you.

Photo of Tian Jiang W.

I don't recommend this travel agency- Grand Century Cruises, they were lacking experience to make trip to Europe. 1, They took advantage for the Europe traveling because they knew the most of travelers has been trapped in the US and Canada for a long time due to the pandemic. 2, The agency booked the cheapest airfare to France, the 10 hours fly hours with low grade meal or no meal, such as "Westjet" and "Franchbee". (Only 2 stars on the customers review). 3, The agency charged $3300 and covered the air ticket + hotel + tour bus only per person, the rest museums tickets all need to pay extra. 4, The local tour guiders were lacking professional knowledge to deal with US tourists. The group has 3 tour buses with 120 tourists. The local guiders were lacking enthusiasm. 5, The entire trips with 3 buses were looking for the Chinese restaurant everyday for the group meals and disregard the pandemic stage cautious. Sure the group meals restaurant always attaches with agent commission. 6, The hotels 15 nights except one night stayed in the Crown Plaza, the rest nights stayed in 2 stars hotel. The tourist deserved better services. $3300 plus tip $180 per person. The tourist needs to pay all the ticket individually with agency marks up. you paid 28 Euro, the tour guider gave you only one hour in the museum, but he can spend hours bus time to find a Chinese restaurant. 7, During the trips, some tourists get infected the Covid-19, the tour leader from agency and local guider have no measures or procedure for the sanitization to protect the rest travelers, not at all. Overall, I do not recommend to travel with this agency, or the travelers need to be aware buying your own air ticket at least. The company name is cruises, they are lacking knowledge to handle the land tour. That was all I can share with you.

The 2026 Tour de France will roll out of Barcelona, Spain, officials confirmed.

ASO chief Christian Prudhomme and Barcelona’s mayor Jaume Collboni sealed the deal Tuesday on the historic Catalan city hosting the opening three stages of the 2026 Tour, from July 4 through 6.

Stages 1 and 2 will play out entirely inside Catalunya before stage 3 starts in Spain and heads northward for a finish in France.

Details of race-courses are to be confirmed, but the third stage won’t be able to avoid a passage of the Pyrénées.

“We like big, prestigious cities, whether French or foreign. But only on condition that we continue to visit the smaller location, the villages in France,” Prudhomme told L’Équipe. “This is essential.”

The Barcelona 2026 grand départ  will be the Tour’s first start over the Pyréneées since last year’s big Basque start.

Florence, Italy, hosts the Tour de France’s opening phase later this month. Le Tour will return to a French entrée in 2025 with three stages centered around Lille .

Barcelona is becoming a favorite for race organizers.

The Tour de France already visited there on three occasions, most recently in 2009, and the city took center stage when it hosted the wet and wild opening of the Vuelta a España last year.

The city staged the 1973 and 1984 road world championships and the 1992 Olympic Games, and its iconic Montjuïc climb has been the centerpiece of the final stage of the Volta a Catalunya for several years.

“For Barcelona, there was political will but also sporting interest with the Montjuïc climb,” Prudhomme said Tuesday, referring to the site where Felice Gimondi won rainbows in 1973.

Stay tuned for further details of the stage routes and profiles.
